INSIDE
An undisclosed amount of drugs and firearms were seized at a rural Ashburton address during a police raid yesterday morning. Canterbury police, the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) and a specialist search group executed a drug-related search warrant at the address, south of Ashburton, at 7am. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner, who is in charge of the investigation, said a 45-year-old Mid Canterbury man was arrested on a number of firearms and drugs charges. He is due to appear in the Ashburton District Court on December 1.
Fifteen police officers, nine specialist search staff and members of the AOS seized drugs and firearms, but no more details were available, Detective Senior Sergeant Worner said. He could say the drugs were not methamphetamine, but not what type they were or how much was found. Police teams were at the address for most of the morning while the property was searched and enquiries completed. Such a large number of police staff were needed because of the size of the property, he said. They left the scene at about mid-afternoon yesterday. Other people were located at the address, but were not charged.
The search, like all other drugs-related warrants, was undertaken in an effort to curb the supply of drugs into the area, Detective Senior Sergeant Worner said. “The prevention of access to drugs and firearms in our community is always in the forefront of our actions.” Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said the offender had been a person of interest for a period of time and more charges were likely to be laid. “[Yesterday’s] warrant is another step forward in disrupting the methamphetamine supply and is part of continuing enquiries within Mid Canterbury. “Police are committed to preventing the social harm that this illegal activity supports.”
