Search continues for missing Methven man The search for a missing Methven man will resume today after searchers were unable to locate him over the weekend.

George Agnew, 66, hasn’t been heard from since he made contact with his family as lunchtime last Tuesday.

He was reported missing by his family on Saturday morning after they were unable to locate or contact him.

Agnew’s 25-foot yacht, Solar Heat, was found abandoned on Lake Benmore on Saturday morning – but there was no sign of its owner.

It is believed that Agnew had been camping at the Haldon Arm Reserve, on the edge of Lake Benmore near Twizel.

ily had joined the search and, along with search and rescue teams and volunteers, they had been searching the entire Lake Benmore area all day without a result.

Coastguard boats and a helicopter will return and join the search for Agnew today.

Police will also continue making inquiries and will assess any new information that comes to hand.

“Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen Mr Agnew, or of any sightings of his boat,” police said in a statement.

On Saturday initial searches failed to find Agnew and the search intensified yesterday.

More than a dozen boats, made up police and search and rescue teams, the Mackenzie Lakes Coastguard and a group of volunteers spent the day scouring the shorelines between the Haldon camping ground and the Ohau B hydro station.

The day-long search, which began early yesterday morning, failed to locate Agnew and late last night police issued a statement saying that they would continue their search this morning.

Gearing up for 17th annual food drive Briscoes Ashburton’s hugely successful food drive, Toot 4 Tucker, will take to the streets tonight.

From 6pm volunteers will be making their way around town gathering non-perishable food items which are then passed on to locals in need.

Led by the County Lions and sponsored

by Property Brokers, this year will be the 17th edition of Toot 4 Tucker.

Food is distributed to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support.

The challenge has been set this year too.

Last year 320 banana boxes of food were collected.

The best items are non-perishable, unopened and before their use by dates.

Popular options in previous years have included cereal, tea and coffee, jellies and instant pudding, canned tomatoes, tinned fish and risotto.

Donating is easy, just keep an ear out tonight after 6pm for the horns out on the street.

Special Toot 4 Tucker donation bags have been sent out in the mail, but food items can also be donated inside plastic supermarket bags.

Residents who know they will not be home on Monday night can also leave their donations out the front of their house.

make bid for loading zone Unloading trucks at Briscoes’ Cass Street store has became a tricky exercise since a fence was built between its service lane and a neighbouring property.

Initially the company wanted to solve the problem by having parking spaces on Cass Street designated as loading zones but the hours allocated for this purpose were too restrictive, two of the company’s representatives told Ashburton District councillors last week.

The parking spaces were only able to be used for unloading vehicles between 6am and 9am but that did not work with the schedules of some transport companies, the company’s representatives said.

While the early morning hours worked for smaller deliveries, the larger companies where Ashburton was just one delivery point across the South Island, did not run to such tight schedules, they said.

Briscoes wanted one parking space north of its service lane designated a loading zone with parking allowed for periods of no more than 10 or 15 minutes.

This would allow vehicles to park and for the footpath to be closed while unloading was in progress.

If the loading zone was approved, it might be able to revert to a clear parking space in the future, the representatives said.

Long-term, Briscoes was looking at other options within Ashburton for its base.

“We’re committed to staying in town, it’s just how we get by shortterm.”

Councillors will debate the loading zone at the next service delivery meeting.

Minecraft as a learning tool Computer games and healthy eating might not seem like a natural combination, but the two go hand in hand for Year 5 students at Methven Primary School.

Using Minecraft’s education edition, the pupils are building a virtual village, complete with a free range chicken farm, crop fields and shops to sell the produce.

Teacher Adele Warburton says Minecraft is more than just a fun computer game. She says using Minecraft as a learning tool encourages 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity and problem solv-

ing. It also teaches the children about being good digital citizens.

“We talk about how you wouldn’t rip someone’s book up, therefore you wouldn’t tear down their house in Minecraft.”

Director of Minecraft Education Neal Manegold said his goal is to make Minecraft: Education Edition accessible to all teachers, not just the techie types.

“We’ve baked a tutorial world into the game that is designed not only for teachers who have never played Minecraft, but teachers who have never played a computer game.”

necraft: Education Edition just over a year ago and the tech giant has been working hard ever since to keep up with teachers’ growing demand for the game as they begin to recognise its value as a teaching tool.

At the Bett Asia 2017 education technology summit held last week in Kuala Lumpur, teachers from all over the world got handson with the game in Minecraft Teacher Academy sessions.

Manegold says Minecraft can be used in and across all subjects.

“It’s not a case of teachers saying ‘ok, now it’s Minecraft time’; it’s about seamless cur-

riculum integration.” He points to a growing bank of Minecraft lesson plans shared by teachers, for teachers. Most of the plans are multidisciplinary. One lesson plan tasks students with building a sustainable community on an island with limited resources, touching on literacy, geography and environmental sciences.

Manegold also says there needs to be clear evidence of learning.

“It’s not enough for teachers to say, ‘I’m cool, I’m using Minecraft’. Students need to be able to show the benefits of what they’re doing and what they’ve learned.”

Councillors tackle climate change

When it plans for the future, climate change needs to be one of the items on the Ashburton District Council’s agenda.

Four Canterbury local authorities – Christchurch City, Selwyn, Waimakariri and Kaikoura –have already signed a Local Government New Zealand climate change declaration. Ashburton has not.

In August mayor Donna Favel was keen to add her name to the declaration but several of her councillors were not, saying signing came with significant financial

implications. Those costs needed to be discussed first, they said.

Councillors last week took part in a climate change workshop where they looked at the fine print around that declaration.

While the overarching principles were straightforward, actions of commitment were more complex if put into practice, community relations manager Vincie Billante said.

Councils were being asked to develop and implement ambitious action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support resilience within their own communities.

Doing that would mean the council would have to resource a climate action plan, keep track of vehicle emissions in its vehicle fleet, develop a walking/cycling and transportation strategy, work to improve the resource efficiency and health of homes, businesses and infrastructure in the district and support the use of renewable energy and the uptake of electric vehicles.

All of those came with costs and a need for extra resources, Billante said.

While planning for climate change might not be high on the agenda for some councillors, the

council did need to show it was planning for future impact and that it was preparing the community.

This planning was a top priority for both central government and LGNZ, she said.

The likely effects council needed to consider were the impact of warmer temperatures and changing rainfall patterns on its infrastructure, planning and building regulations as well as the way it currently did its business.

This could see greater use of air conditioners, higher water demand in summer, stormwater systems overwhelmed in winter

months, increased coastal erosion, threats to biodiversity, work disruptions because of higher temperatures, increased road damage from hotter temperatures and changing land use to suit a different climate.

While the council already had plans in place to mitigate coastal erosion and rising sea levels and was ahead of many councils when it came to planning for increased pressure on its infrastructure, significant work would be needed once a commitment to the climate change declaration was made, Billante said.

Two climbers rescued Two climbers have been rescued by helicopter from close to the summit of Mt Cook.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre said two helicopters were sent to rescue the climbers after they were caught in a rock fall and activated an emergency beacon at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Department of Conservation (DOC) Aoraki/Mt Cook operations manager Brent Swanson said a rescuer lowered from one of the choppers rescued the pair at 3200 metres, about 500m below the 3724m summit.

“One had leg and head injuries,” he said.

“The climbers did the right thing by having a beacon and having registered it,

and when they set it off it gave their location.”

The helicopter brought the climbers, who were both New Zealanders, back to the DOC base where the injured man was picked up by Westpac rescue helicopter and taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries.

“The weather conditions were not perfect, there was a little bit of cloud, but the rescue went really well,” Swanson said.

He said it was the third rescue on Mt Cook so far in this climbing season, which runs from late October to mid-January.

Typically there were about 30 rescues each climbing season.

With more than 80 stalls up for perusal there was something

on hand for everyone who made their way through the doors.

Ashburton Trust Event Centre’s Casey Rose said the day was a great success. “We are all pretty happy with how things have gone, I think. It was a bit of a jigsaw puzzle this year getting everyone in and we used more space than we’ve used before.”

The event will return again in 2018, but Rose threw out a little teaser that it would be shifting to a different date and to watch this space.

Business success relies on loyal locals

When you’re in the fiercely competitive food retailing world, then loyal customer support is everything, says Tinwald Supermarket owner Gaylene Thompson.

Gaylene, husband Paul and parents Philip and Robyn Young have owned the business for 13-and-a-half years and say they know about 90 per cent of their customers. And that demonstrates a hugely loyal customer base, one that means success or failure for a small business, Gaylene said.

“It’s the loyal locals that have kept us growing and thriving,” she said.

Paul and Gaylene were living in Ashburton before they bought Tinwald Supervalue but the grocery trade was in their blood – on both sides of the family.

Over the past 13 years they’ve expanded their shop space and continue to finetune the grocery lines they sell.

Often that change comes through customer request or is based on customer preference. It’s all about knowing the people who walk through your door

and what it is they like to buy, Gaylene said.

And that ability to individualise what’s on the shelves is important, she said, and it’s something that creates a point of difference. Items can often be ordered in if requested.

“We’re big enough to stock everything but small enough to give personal service and we’re flexible, we can do orders on requests. It’s all about personal service and we’re often told by our customers how much they appreciate the great service our staff give.”

They buy produce locally when they can and try to use local suppliers if possible.

Like most local business owners, Gaylene and Paul and Philip and Robyn do their own business locally too.

It’s about making sure local money goes around the district, not out of the district, Gaylene said.

And like other local business owners she knows that without loyal local support those businesses would struggle to survive.

“We’re lucky, we have some fiercely loyal customers.”

Motorcyclist dies

If you think being a company director is about turning up to meetings, enjoying a free lunch and collecting a pay cheque, then think again, says Gary Leech.

He has a history of directorship that stretches back more than 35 years and recently added chairmanship of Christchurch’s City Care group to the list.

The company, formed in 1999 through the acquisition of the works operation of the Christchurch City Council, employs 1439 staff and has an annual turnover of $320 million.

The Canterbury-based company operates across 17 New Zealand locations.

Leech has been a member of the company’s board since 2014 and stepped into the chairman’s role this year as the company re-energised and re-structured its business to better reflect customer procurement trends with the aim of becoming more agile and more relevant to the markets it operates in.

This appointment sees Leech currently holding the chairman ship of five boards including ISelect Group of companies, New Zealand Sock Company Ltd, Electricity Ashburton Ltd and South Pacific Seeds’ Sales NZ Ltd (vegetable seed sales). He is a director of a number of other companies including an Australasian group.

The retired accountant’s directorships are spread across a diverse range of companies, and Leech says he is careful about the appointments he accepts, taking on only those where he feels he can become a solid contributor.

His first board appointment came in 1986 to Ashburton’s Mitre 10. He still sits around the board table today.

“The pleasure of that directorship is seeing how much the group has grown since then,” he said.

The world of directors has changed dramatically since Leech first joined their ranks and boards increasingly need members with diverse interests, he said.

“The last thing you want today around the table is lots of accountants and lawyers. In today’s

Gary Leech world you need people who think outside the square. You might have financial skills but today you need something else. Boards can buy consultants with financial and legal skills.”

Directors needed to have an inquiring mind, they needed to understand what a business was doing, to ask why they were doing it and to ask whether they should be doing things in a certain way.

In addition there needed to be a strong digital element around the board table, Leech said.

The need for a digital approach to board thinking could be demonstrated with the New Zealand Sock Company which he chairs.

“We recently did a sky gazing session and realised that what we’re really selling is not socks, it’s the best sock technology in the world. With most boards, a significant proportion of discussion around board tables now is on changing technologies, the so-called disrupters.”

He’s keen to see new people consider becoming members of

boards and says you don’t need to be a lawyer, accountant or high powered business person to be a successful director.

“It’s what you do in your business and community life. We’re all professional people but not necessarily in the professions.

Boards need a range of skill sets.

One of the first things to understand is that it’s not about being a director, it’s all about governance, you need to understand governance first,” he said.

The institute of directors runs a series of courses for people at the beginning of their directorship careers and companies are starting to offer internship options for new directors.

While there were not enough women on boards, rather than focusing on gender balance, it was more important for a board to have the right mix of skills, Leech said.

“I see the important thing as diversity of contribution because it’s a new era around board tables where things like digital market-

ing skills are becoming very important.”

When people think about boards, they generally thing about public companies, but many charities and non-profit organisations are also governed by boards, and these boards are a great place for the less experienced to learn the ropes, Leech said.

For people who are appointed to multiple boards, the work becomes something of a vocation rather than a job, he said, but it’s a vocation with serious commitment.

“You have to believe you can contribute and add value to a company but then you have to actually do it. It’s very important to me and it should be to anyone considering going on a board that they realise and understand fully the type of industry they’re working with and that they believe they can empower that company to grow.”

Board membership should be enjoyable and it should have an element of excitement, he said, but the responsibilities and liabilities shouldn’t be under estimated.

Some of the boards on which Leech sits are governed by eight or nine pieces of legislation that if breached could see directors fined or imprisoned. And you cannot insure against those.

“There is a very serious side to directorship, but it can be rewarding and enjoyable.”

Fully commercial corporates pay directors’ fees but pay rates vary widely.

Travel costs are always covered, but board service should be about more than the money, it should be about a belief that you can make a difference to the company or organisation, he said.

“I’d say to anyone thinking about doing it, don’t just think, take that first step. Don’t leave it until you have more experience. Yes, there’s an element of life experience needed, but some board members are quite young.”

Anyone who is considering taking up a specific directorship, however, must do their due diligence to ensure the company would be a good fit for them, and as you thought it was, Leech said.

Christmas shoppers urged to keep receipts With one month to go until Christmas, consumer group Retail NZ is urging Kiwi shoppers to keep their heads as the festive shopping frenzy breaks out around them.

This includes remembering their consumer rights, shopping care-

fully and keeping receipts from any purchases made in case anything goes wrong.

There are a number of protections granted to shoppers buying from stores or websites as covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act,

Retail NZ general manager for public affairs Greg Harford said.

“This means that if the product is faulty, then you can take it back to the retailer and have the problem sorted out,” he said.

Retailers, on the other hand, are not legally obliged to ex-

change a product simply because a shopper has changed their mind and no longer wants it.

“It’s a great idea to choose wisely before making a purchase and, if you’re buying a gift, ask whether the store offers an exchange card programme.”

A man has died after crashing his motorbike in east Auckland.

Police were called to Apirana Avenue in Glen Innes at about 1.30am yesterday. The rider died at the scene with police now investigating the cause of the crash.

Swimmer missing A swimmer is missing after being caught in the powerful current of a West Coast river. The man in his 50s was reported missing at about 6.15pm on Saturday while swimming at the junction of the Buller and Ohikanui Rivers, near Westport. He was reportedly caught in the current while swimming and could not be found, police say. Search teams looked for the man until 11pm on Saturday night, with a fresh search of both rivers and their banks being carried out by a jet boat and kayaks yesterday.

Body found Search and rescue teams have found a body believed to be that of Marlborough man Bert Kuiti, who was reported missing earlier this week. A homegrown Ashburton production that dazzled local audiences could soon be going on tour.

Rock opera Tomorrow’s Too Late took over the Ashburton Trust Event Centre earlier this month, and delivered a dystopian storyline melded with hit rock songs.

A cast of 20 Playspace Theatre Company performers had been rehearsing since early August, and director Georgie Sivier said everything “really came into alignment” by the final dress rehearsal.

Despite the odd hairy moment along the way – including the lead guitarist nearly cutting off his fingers – she said the three final performances “couldn’t have gone better” and even earned standing ovations from small but enthusiastic crowds.

“We had to rehearse an encore song because there was just so much demand for more,” she said. “It was pretty amazing.”

Sivier said following the performances on November 17-19, she has been approached by theatre producers interested in taking it on tour around the country – and is “definitely” interested in taking up the offer.

While she would keep the storyline mostly the same, Sivier is open to tweaking parts of the production to give it a little more oomph.

“We might change a few bits and pieces … maybe make the choreography a bit more intense.”

She said she is also inviting audience members to provide their suggestions for improvements, and is best reached via Facebook.

“People can let me know what they enjoyed most – or perhaps, what they didn’t enjoy,” she said.

nett, who worked with Sivier to write the production after crossing paths with her at a Methven Theatre Company production three years ago.

Tomorrow’s Too Late combined their passions for theatre and contemporary rock, and included songs like Welcome to the

Jungle, Bohemian Rhapsody and Wake Up. Sivier said there had been a sense of sadness among the performers reaching the end of their journey.

“It was all this hard work and then just three shows … but it’s been a great experience.”

Mosque attack leaves 305 dead They arrived in five SUVs, took positions across from the mosque’s door and windows, and just as the imam was about to deliver his sermon from atop the pulpit, they opened fire and tossed grenades at the estimated 500 worshippers inside.

When the violence finally stopped, more than 300 people, including 27 children, had been killed and 128 injured.

As the gunfire rang out and the blasts shook the mosque, worshippers screamed and cried out in pain.

A stampede broke out in the rush towards a door leading to the washrooms.

Others tried desperately to force their way out of the windows.

Those who survived spoke of children screaming as they saw parents and older brothers mowed down by gunfire or shredded by the blasts. Some families lost all or most male members in the massacre.

So composed were the militants that they methodically checked their victims for any sign of life after the initial round of blazing gunfire. Those still moving or breathing received a bullet to the head or the chest, the witnesses said.

When the ambulances arrived they shot at them, repelling them as got back into their vehicles and fled.

The weekend assault was Egypt’s deadliest attack by Islamic extremists in the country’s modern history.

A statement by the country’s chief prosecutor, Nabil Sadeq, said the attackers, some masked, numbered between 25 and 30. Clad in military-style camouflage pants and black T-shirts, one of them carried a black banner with the declaration of the Muslim faith – there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet. The banner matched those carried by IS. They also torched seven cars parked outside the mosque that belonged to worshippers, the statement added.

“We knew that the mosque was under attack by (militants),” said witness Ebid Salem Mansour recalling the intense gunfire. Mansour, a 38-year-old worker in a nearby salt factory, suffered two gunshot wounds to his legs.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi vowed that the attack “will not go unpunished”.

Yesterday, he ordered that a mausoleum be built in memory of the victims the attack.

Rance Howard dies Director Ron Howard says his actor father Rance Howard has died. He was 89. Howard announced his father’s death yesterday on Twitter. He praised his father for his ability to balance ambition with great personal integrity. The elder Howard also was the father of actor Clint Howard and grandfather of actresses Bryce Dallas Howard and Paige Howard.

He appeared in several of Ron Howard’s films, including Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Parenthood and Grand Theft Auto.

Bali flights resuming after eruption Flights between Bali and Australia are returning to normal, after the second eruption of the Mount Agung volcano within a week forced some major airlines to cancel, delay or divert flights on Saturday night.

The eruption, beginning at about 5.30pm local time and continuing for several hours, spewed a plume of ash and steam at least 1500 metres into the sky.

Jetstar, which cancelled nine flights between Bali and Australia or Singapore on Saturday, says its senior pilots have assessed the volcanic ash conditions on Sunday and found them improved and safe to fly in.

The eruption was Mt Agung’s second in a week after a more modest event on Tuesday created a plume about 700 metres high.

About 25,000 locals were evacuated from the volcano’s surrounds in September when it showed signs of activity for the first time in more than half a century, and are yet to return home.

Two questioned over London station panic Two men sought by authorities after an altercation at a central London underground station led to panic at the heart of the Oxford Street shopping district have turned themselves in to police for questioning.

Two men aged 21 and 40 went to a police station voluntarily after a public appeal was launched, British Transport Police said yesterday.

Both were interviewed by police. They haven’t been identified or charged with any crime.

Authorities believe the two men had some type of confrontation on the Oxford Circus tube platform on Friday afternoon, sparking panicky, false reports that guns had been fired.

Several people were injured and nine were taken to hospital, including one with leg injuries, after chaos erupted in the packed station.

Panic spread quickly near the Oxford Circus subway station on Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. But police said after evacuating two subway stations that there were no indications that any shots had been fired.

The public response to the altercation, fuelled by unfounded social media posts about gunfire, indicated that Londoners remain on edge after a year marred by numerous extremist attacks.

Coral eggs and sperm were collected from Heron Island’s reef to produce more than a million larvae which were returned to the wild with 100 surviving and growing successfully. “The success of this new research not only applies to the Great Barrier Reef, but has potential global significance,” lead project researcher and Southern Cross University professor Peter Harrison said.

UK mum held in Iran thanks campaigners

A British mother jailed in Iran has spoken from prison in Tehran to thank those campaigning for her release.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe addressed those attending a rally and march, including actress Emma Thompson, through a phone and loudspeaker to thank everyone for their support.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been imprisoned in Tehran since April 2016, when she was arrested at the city’s airport after a holiday with her then 22-month-old daughter Gabriella.

She told the rally near her home in north London: “I’m so grateful for everybody’s support and love ... I am so overwhelmed and moved.

“All that is on my mind is to be back home and to be back with my family.”

Zaghari-Ratcliffe was sentenced to five years in jail on charges of spying and seeking to overthrow the Tehran regime, and has been held in solitary confinement.

Her family has led a long-running campaign for her release, saying she is innocent and raising fears for her physical and mental health.

At the protest at the weekend day, a tearful Thompson hit out at the “bunch of angry molecules bumping around in Westminster” and urged the government to do more to bring her home.

The Love Actually actress, who was suffering from pneumonia, called on Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to “get on a plane”, after his suggestion earlier this

month that Zaghari-Ratcliffe was training journalists in Iran which exposed her to the threat of her five-year sentence being doubled.

The Oscar-winning actress said: “We are a net of compassion and love for Nazanin and her family. This is what we human beings do best, in stark contrast to the bunch of angry molecules bumping around in Westminster.

“If I can get out of bed with pneumonia to support a horribly abused member of our community then our Foreign Secretary can get on a plane and go to Iran and deal with the problem he’s so seriously exacerbated.”

Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn Tulip Siddiq spoke to Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and later said: “We discussed how we would take both our daughters to Peppa Pig World when she’s released.”

Zaghari-Racliffe’s husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said: “It is profoundly moving to see so many people here.

“I can really feel the love, and Nazanin can feel the love, and in the end that’s the most important thing, that’s what keeps us going.”

The rally took place before a march to the Shia Islamic Centre of England in Maida Vale, northwest London, to hand in a “Mothers’ Open Letter” asking for Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release from the Tehran prison.

An online petition calling for her to be returned to Britain has had more than 1.3 million signatures.

The US Navy says two sailors from Florida and another from Louisiana died in an aircraft crash in the Philippine Sea off the coast of Japan. In a news release, the Navy’s 7th Fleet said the families of Lieutenant Steven Combs and Airman apprentice Bryan Grosso of Florida and airman Matthew Chialastri of Louisiana were notified of their deaths following the crash last week. The C-2A “Greyhound” transport aircraft was travelling to the USS Ronald Reagan when it crashed. Eight people were rescued. US and Japanese ships searched for the three missing sailors.

Killed in hit-and-run A man who survived the October 1 mass shooting that killed 58 concertgoers and injured hundreds in Las Vegas has been killed in a hit-and-run in southern Nevada. Roy McClellan of Las Vegas was killed on November 17 while hitchhiking on State Route 160 in Pahrump, about 80km west of Las Vegas. His widow, Denise McClellan, said she can’t understand why her 52-year-old husband survived the shooting, only to die in a hit-and-run.

Threat to attack The Islamic State has issued chilling threat to attack Christmas markets in the Britain, France and Germany in pictures circulated among supporters. The jihadis have circulated images on messaging apps including one in which a black-clad hooded figure is seen standing over a kneeling Santa Claus with an image of Regent Street in the background, reports The Daily Mail. A message in English, French, and German says ‘Soon on your holidays’ with the clear implication that London can expect a terrorist attack over the holiday season.

Struck by lightning A woman in her 20s has died after being struck by lightning in Melbourne on Friday night. The woman and another man in his 20s were injured outside a home on Sunset Drive, in Chirnside Park, in Melbourne’s north east around 8.40pm, reports news.com.au. The woman was taken to hospital but died overnight, a Victoria Police spokesman told news.com.au. The man also sustained injuries but emergency services believe they’re not life threatening at this stage.

Are good roads too much to ask for?

he state of Mid Canterbury roads is still the major bugbear of local ratepayers and members of the district.

It’s like the slow-burner of the district in the fact it’s a subject that can sit idly in the background, simmer away for months, without a comment.

Then, bang. It’s the hottest topic of the moment and everyone has an opinion or a view on what is actually going on.

The latest round of results of the It’s Our Place survey, which is conducted by the Ashburton District Council, the state of our district’s roads is still the highest prioritised issue for the council, currently – more popular than the contentious i-SITE issues which wasn’t listed, but was able to be added in the additional comments section.

The term ‘key-finding’ has been bandied about it with the results of the first two rounds of the survey and if the roading issue isn’t treated as a key-issue from here forth then the entire process of the It’s Our Place survey has been a waste of time.

Adding more credence to the fact that roads need to be right at the top of the list for the council is that in a current poll on www. guardianonline.co.nz, which asks voters what they think should be the main focus of the council, roading is a resounding leader with twice as many votes as the i-SITE. So, people care about it. Dearly.

The major issue is that it seems to be quite the process just to get a repair job done on a road.

In fact, it’s quite complex because you first have to work your way through the blame game.

The New Zealand Transport Authority like to say it’s the Ashburton District Council’s responsibility and then the Ashburton District Council likes to point the finger towards the New Zealand Transport Authority.

Despite the games, no one actually cares who is responsible.

They just want their roads safe enough to drive on comfortably and to minimise the chance of damage to their vehicles through potholes and bad spots on the road.

It’s not too much to ask really, is it?

YOUR VIEWS Parking And here I was thinking that Ashburton was a no-nonsense, practical and common sense type of town.

Alas, sadly this was not the case ... when I discovered (unwittingly), that I had become a “crim” in your community.

And my offence one might ask ... well according to Ashburton District Council’s ever-diligent Parking Officer ‘008’ ...

I had broken the law(?) by parking my wife’s car in an “INCONSIDERATE PARKING” spot while we enjoyed lunch.

And that “naughty” site ... well that most heinous of places ... under a convenient tree in a West Street carpark.

Yes, it was an impromptu choice, largely dictated by having a family member, aka our dog, and a very warm midday.

But, as there were no yellow lines or any specific signs saying “don’t park under this tree” it seemed a sensible choice.

Now I realise that Parking Officer 008 (if it had been “Officer 007” perhaps one could see a glimpse of “action man” here) no doubt thought to him/herself “this must be the offence of the day” and get down to business and issue that ticket.

Of course, using a bit of common sense(?) logic and see if there was a valid reason, I guess was not part of the crime scene investigation. And before issuing us with Notice No. 152575, was the primary party involved (the tree) consulted?

Moral of this story? Well, to restore my faith in Ashburton as a no-nonsense, common sense type of town, could some responsible member of the Ashburton District Council take “ownership” of this patently silly “tantrum” and make a few inquiries about this matter?

Otherwise, I’ll have to reluctantly assume that Ashburton is just another PC rules-obsessed place ... like so much of this nation that seems to have lost any sight of “the real world” but way too much moral outrage!

Families deserve choice W

hile it is more than a few years ago now, I still remember what it was like to be a new parent. It is a wonderful but exhausting time getting to know your baby and taking care of his or her needs.

In most families, mums are the primary caregivers in those first few months but even when the birth is without complications, it is vital to have good support.

I know that many new fathers would like to take more time off work in those early weeks to bond with their baby and help support their partner but feel that they can’t due to financial constraints or because they don’t have enough leave available.

This is why I proposed in Parliament that the Government make changes to its Paid Parental Leave Bill to give parents of a newborn baby the option to both take paid parental leave at the same time.

where families would prefer both parents to be able to take parental leave at the same time because of their particular circumstances.

For example, if they have had twins or a premature baby, if the mother is recovering from a Caesarean section or is it risk of post-natal depression, or if they have other young children to care for.

I am disappointed that the Coalition Government has refused to consider making this change that would recognise the role of both parents and give families the flexibility to choose what works best for them.

I believe that my proposal would be good for parents and for their babies as it would allow parents to spend more time at home supporting each other and bonding with their babies in those important early months.

My proposed amendment would not extend the cost of the policy and would not change the total amount of paid parental leave that parents are able to take, which will be 22 weeks from July 1 next year.

Despite several members of the Government agreeing that this change is a good idea, the Government has refused to make this change and is instead committed to rushing this Bill through Parliament under urgency.

This doesn’t make any sense as the Bill doesn’t take effect until 1 July next year so there is no need to rush it through in this manner.

should have followed the proper process of referring the Bill back to Select Committee to consider my proposal and any other ideas for improvement and give the public the opportunity to make submissions.

Despite painting itself as “family friendly”, the Government has shown that when it comes to the crunch it would rather rush through legislation than listen to what actually matters to families.

I feel strongly about this issue and this is why I have decided to promote a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to give the coalition Government a second chance to do the right thing by new parents.

The square is flanked by some other masterpiece structures – my favourite being the Aldred Building, which was Montreal’s first skyscraper. It uncannily resembles the Empire State Building and was completed about the same time.

I took to the water on AML’s sightseeing cruise, which provides superb skyline views as you drift along the storied St. Lawrence River. You’ll pass by St. Helen’s Island which was the site of Expo 67, and where many expo landmarks still linger. The USA’s expo pavilion was a geodesic dome, like Florida’s Epcot.

It’s now home to the Biosphere Museum.

You’ll also pass La Ronde, the staggering amusement park built for Expo 67 and still beloved by Montrealers. There’s a swag of bone-shaking thrill rides include Le Monstre, the world’s highest wooden roller coaster. No thanks.

If you’re visiting in July, La Ronde also hosts an annual International Fireworks competition, lighting up the skies with pyrotechnic panache, all month long.

In honour of Montreal’s 375th birthday this year, the iconic Jacques Cartier Bridge, crossing the St. Lawrence, has been given a dazzling touch-up, with thousands of cutting-edge lighting connections wrapped around its ironwork.

The innovative digital light show follows the seasons and has become a new nocturnal riverside draw.

Further down the river, you’ll get a fantastic view of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, one of the most expensive stadiums ever built in the world. Marred with constant design failures, the multi-billion dollar stadium, specifically commissioned for the Montreal Games, wasn’t actually completed until 1987, 11 years behind schedule.

Mont-Royal (Royal Mountain) backdrops downtown Montreal and this 230 metre hill literally gave rise to the city’s name.

Draping much of this lofty mound is Parc du Mont-Royal, a sprawling green space clad in oak, maple and poplar trees. This beloved urban oasis, which offers great respite from the concrete jungle and summer humidity,

The Museum of Archaeology and History (Pointe-à-Callière Museum). was designed in the 1840s by Frederick Olmsted, the same fella responsible for New York’s Central Park.

Two cemeteries sit along the northern slope, one of which is traditionally English Protestant while the other is French Catholic, emblematic of the city’s dual strands.

Also worth a look is the sacred dome of St. Joseph’s, perched at the summit of Mont-Royal.

Pilgrims believe their prayers will be answered by climbing the 99 steps to the basilica, on their knees.

Alternatively, there’s a shuttle that can zip you up to the summit. Divine intervention, not included.

In a city brimming with ostentatious churches, one of my favourites is Cathédrale MarieReine-du-Monde. (Mary Queen of the World Cathedral).

Adjacent to the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, if the exterior looks familiar, it could well be because this glorious church is a quarter-scale replica of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican – complete with a faithful reproduction of Bernini’s ornate altar canopy.

QUICK MEAL Beef 500g Quality Mark beef mince 1 small red onion, finely grated 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger 1½ T sambal oelek (see tips) or your favourite chilli sauce 2 tablespoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves 1 C fresh breadcrumbs 2 T milk 1 egg, lightly beaten To assemble 2 sheets frozen pre-rolled butter puff pastry, defrosted 1 egg, lightly beaten with a little milk, for brushing sesame seeds, for sprinkling Satay sauce ½ C crunchy peanut butter ½ C coconut cream ¼ C water 2 t light soy sauce 1 t sesame oil

sized rolls Preheat the oven to 200°C. Lightly grease a large shallow baking tray.

Beef: Place all beef ingredients in a large bowl and mix together.

Season.

To assemble: Lightly flour the benchtop and cut each pastry sheet in half. Divide the mince mixture into 4 sausage shapes as long as your pastry. Working with 1 piece of pastry at a time, place 1 portion of the mince mixture slightly off-centre on 1 piece of pastry. Press together and use a fork to seal the edges.

Brush with egg wash, then cut into desired size.

Make a small slit in the top of each sausage roll to vent steam.

Place the rolls on the baking tray and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Cook for 30-35 minutes, until the pastry is well browned and the mince cooked.

Ref’s call incenses Tonga Debate continues to rage as to whether Tongan forward Andrew Fifita was robbed of a matchwinning try in the last seconds of Saturday’s thrilling 20-18 World Cup semi-final loss to England.

Opinion is divided over whether Fifita lost the ball or had it stripped by England defender Elliott Whitehead, with referee Matt Cecchin ruling the ball was lost forward through a loose carry before blowing fulltime.

Cecchin was adamant and stuck to his guns despite howls of protests and pleas from the Tongan players for him to check the decision with the video referee.

“I just can’t believe we don’t have a look at that – the game’s on the line, it’s the last play of the game,” said Tonga coach Kristian Woolf.

“You look at other tries 10, 12 times.

“We don’t have a look at that?

“I really don’t understand that.”

An emotional Fifita was disappointed with the decision but remained philosophical, saying: “To be honest, it’s a game of footy, it was very hurtful at the end, but it’s done now.

“I have to move on now.

“I’ve been on the other end of that opportunity in a grand final and got it on the day.

“This one hurts, but we’ve had our opportunities and we had to capitalise.”

In typically dry fashion, NRLbased supercoach Wayne Bennett told reporters on Saturday that his side’s display in their 20-18 semi-final win over Tonga wouldn’t be enough for the all-conquering Kangaroos next weekend in Brisbane.

Seemingly coasting at 20-0 with seven minutes left, England somehow gave up three late tries to a fast-finishing Mate Ma’a.

Australia obliterated Fiji 54-6 in Friday night’s first semi-final,

seeking to win a fourth World Cup crown in five attempts.

“Probably not,” Bennett said when asked if England could lift the trophy.

“But we’ll be there next week – we’ll still go to the game.”

Speaking with his tongue less firmly in cheek, Tonga counterpart Kristian Woolf felt England had every chance of World Cup glory, but had to be perfect.

Australia’s defence – with only three tries conceded all tournament – would certainly be miserly, meaning England would have to follow suit.

“They’re going to defend well, going to be very hard to score points against, and England were

“I’ve had good looks at England and New Zealand (but) I really haven’t had a good look at Aus-

tralia, except for what we’ve seen against Fiji last night – they were outstanding; they’re going to be very hard to beat and always are.

Bennett, keeping his cards close to his chest, also said he hadn’t spent much time watching Australia’s performances.

In brief Paddon too powerful Hayden Paddon has finished off a horrible year in style as he cruised to victory at Rally New Zealand yesterday. The WRC star won every stage of the event in the Hyundai New Zealand i20 AP4+ to win by over seven minutes from Subaru driver Matt Summerfield.

Andrew Hawkeswood was third in his Mazda, which was enough to claim his maiden New Zealand Rally Championship, narrowly edging Summerfield for overall honours.

Hampstead tops the ladder

The first round of the Mid Canterbury open grade tennis competition has wrapped up, with Hampstead finishing top of the pile after the five games.

On Saturday they faced off against fellow undefeated side Methven to see who would take bragging rights in to the next round of competition.

The teams took home one doubles match each, with Methven’s Sam Bubb and Jarrad Hill defeating Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Pete Kirwan 10-5 in a tiebreaker.

and Jade Brosnahan proved to be too strong in their game, winning 6-3, 6-3.

In the singles, Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell, Pete Kirwan and Mathieu Lucas all picked up wins, giving Hampstead the overall win 4-2.

Fairton and Tinwald played out a thrilling match, with Tinwald taking the victory seven matches to six.

Fairton looked to be in control after the doubles, with Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard comfortably winning 6-3, 6-2, while Erin Connelly-White and Phil Crozier needed a 10-5 tiebreaker win to take their game.

In the singles, Cromie ensured the clash would come down to the wire with his win against Eddie Dargue, but then Tinwald turned on the class.

Peter Leonard, Henrik Tawatao and Josh Jones all won their singles matches in two sets, securing the victory for Tinwald.

The matchup between Allenton and Southern was the final game of the day, with Allenton securing the win 4-2.

Allenton’s Andre van Rooyen and Connor Brosnahan dominated their doubles match, winning 6-1, 6-2, before van Rooyen, Brosnahan and Mary Anne Martin won their singles matches.

Lee Gilbert was the only Southern player to offer any resistance in the singles, defeating Aaron Reid 6-2, 6-3.

Heading in to the next round, Hampstead sit with a perfect five wins, while Methven have four.

Tinwald and Allenton both have two, while Fairton and Southern only have one win their names.

In the A reserve grade, Allenton defeated Southern/Wakanui, the Hampstead Aces won a nailbiter against Methven Gold, with only one game separating the sides.

The Methven Diamonds got one back however, beating the Hampstead Hillbillies 4-2.

Ferrer returns for Auckland Classic David Ferrer (right) will hunt a fifth Auckland Classic tennis title when the ATP tournament begins in Auckland early next year.

The 35-year-old Spaniard, contesting his 18th season on the tour, collected three consecutive Auckland titles between 2011 and 2013, after winning his first title in 2007.

In addition to his four titles, Ferrer has made three semifinal and three quarter-final

appearances in his 12 previous visits.

“It’s always nice for me to come back to Auckland,” he said.

“It has been such a big part of my career, somewhere almost like home for me. I have played some of my best tennis there and it will always be very special for me.”

Ferrer, currently ranked 37th in the world, has won 27 titles in his 17 years on tour, reach-

ing a career-high ranking of No.3 in the world.

The men’s field is taking shape, with four former champions returning in Ferrer, world No.8 Jack Sock and fellow American John Isner (17th), and Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut (20th).

The ASB Classic begins with the women’s event on January 1-6, before the men are on court from January 8-13.

Albert Adomah scored two crucial goals for Aston Villa but Australian eyes will be on Mile Jedinak after the Socceroos captain was again injured in the win over Ipswich. The 2-0 win kept Villa in the top four of the Championship but it may have come at a cost with Jedinak forced to limp out of the game midway through the first half. Jedinak went down off the ball after 20 minutes but returned to the field before being removed by manager Steve Bruce. Bristol City fought back from 2-0 down to beat lowly Hull City 3-2 to keep themselves in the play-off places. Sheffield United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City. - PA

Big win for Bologna Bologna have impressively applied the brakes to Sampdoria’s surge up the Serie A table with a 3-0 win at home. Sampdoria were on the fringes of the European places after winning five of their six previous matches but Simone Verdi’s early goal from a tap-in meant they had work to do if they were to keep on climbing. Ibrahima M’Baye headed home in the 23rd minute to further wound the visitors, although Vassilis Torosidis’ subsequent dismissal for the home side offered Sampdoria some hope. It was not to be, though, as Orji Okwonkwo rubber-stamped Bologna’s victory in the 73rd minute.

Lengthy ban likely An apologetic Avraam Papadopoulos is facing at least six weeks on the sidelines for spitting at Matt Simon in a huge A-League controversy exacerbated by yet another video assistant referee blunder.

Sydney FC, meanwhile, will not rule out appealing Simon’s red card, baffled as to how their striker could be dealt the same punishment as Papadopoulos during Saturday night’s 3-1 win. After a near fourminute VAR review, referee Alex King dismissed both players for the ugly second-half incident, when Papadopoulos spat in the direction of Simon.

In brief Smith proves invaluable David Warner has vowed to take his ego out of the equation as Australia attempt to lighten the immense run-scoring burden on Steve Smith’s shoulders. The class, composure and concentration Smith displayed in his 21st test ton, scored when the Ashes opener was in the balance, has earned widespread praise. It was a reminder of why Smith is widely considered the best batsman in world cricket. But it was also the latest example of how much Australia rely on their captain to prevent the sort of chaotic collapses that Smith has lamented so often this year.

Firebirds still leading The Central Stags beat the Wellington Firebirds comfortably by seven wickets after opener Greg Hay contributed 85 yesterday. Seamer Blair Tickner was the early destroyer for the Stags, taking New Zealand’s 41st first-class hat-trick in his first innings haul of 4-45. The Plunket Shield resumes in March with the white ball competitions now taking centre stage.

Allenton finding form

Allenton are once again starting to look like the side that won nearly every piece of silverware on offer last year, putting in a dominant performance in their victory against Lauriston in the Pritchard Shield.

Allenton won the toss and elected to field, with the bowlers showing just why captain Jeff Naish swung that way.

Sean Strange and Ryan Bell were on red-hot form, with Bell taking five wickets for 30 runs while Strange put up incredibly economical figures, taking four wickets from 6.4 overs, only conceding four runs.

Lauriston managed to avoid picking up too many ducks, but double figures were hard for the home side to come by, with only Scott Maher (11), Bevan Richan (14) and Alex Hooper (17) trou-

bling the scorers on Lauriston’s way to 86 runs.

Allenton took their time with the chase, with Naish a rock at the top of the order with 42 runs not out from 103 balls.

Lauriston’s Dan O’Brien and Alex Hooper did their best to halt Allenton with two wickets each, but an expensive extras column proved somewhat costly as Allenton chased down the total in 26.5 overs.

In the other match of the day, Coldstream played host to Tech, and were able to convert the home ground advantage in to a win.

Tech opened the batting and set Coldstream 102 to chase, with Jackson and Richard Print both picking up four wickets.

Richard once again showed his all-round skills, knocking a rapid-fire 40 not out on the way to victory.

Cook emerges as major England concern

By Laine cLarK England arrived in Australia with question marks over their inexperienced top order.

But veteran opener Alastair Cook has emerged as the biggest concern after his double failure in the first Ashes test in Brisbane.

Former captain Cook’s rotten run continued when he was caught hooking Josh Hazlewood for just seven before England limped to 2-33 in their second dig at stumps on day three with an overall lead of seven.

Unheralded top order batsmen Mark Stoneman, James Vince and Dawid Malan – boast-

ing a total of 15 tests’ experience – were supposed to be England’s weak link this series.

All three registered half centuries in England’s first-innings total of 302.

In contrast, Cook’s first test grand total is nine runs.

He has one half-century in six innings on the Ashes tour.

Dig a bit deeper and it makes for even uglier reading for Cook, England’s highest test runscorer.

He has three centuries in his last 54 test innings and just six tons in 105 digs – although it does include 243 against West Indies in August.

England quick Stuart Broad

Alastair Cook wasn’t concerned by yet another cheap Cook dismissal.

“Not at all. We know what he can do in Australia,” he said of Cook, who famously stroked 766 runs at 127.66 in the 2010-11 Ashes.

“We know he is such a strong character mentally.

“Off the field, he has been brilliant, so calm and really enjoying his cricket.

“The stresses of the captaincy are completely away from him.

“He’s very relaxed and loving it.

His time will come on this tour.”

Former Australian opener Chris Rogers wondered if Cook was struggling for motivation in his seventh Ashes series.

“You can never write off a champion,” Rogers said. “(But) you have to question where he is mentally. It’s hard if you’ve been around forever to dig deep every series and fight.”

Lockie Ferguson’s bowling performance proved a bright spot for New Zealand A on a day otherwise dominated by West Indies batsmen in their warm-up match at Lincoln. All Ferguson’s victims were top seven batsmen as he secured five wickets for 67 runs from 18 overs. Those figures suggest he will be a candidate on stand-by for Neil Wagner in an aggressive third seamer role if there are any injuries ahead of the first test starting next Friday in Wellington.

Kiwi umpire under fire England are reeling after allrounder Moeen Ali was contentiously given out stumped by Kiwi third umpire Chris Gaffaney in the first Ashes test in Brisbane. Ioane ‘phenomenal’

By Liam Napier For all the injuries in the back three this season, the combined efforts of the lethal All Blacks wings in Cardiff speaks to New Zealand’s riches in this area.

No Israel Dagg, Ben Smith or Nehe Milner-Skudder, all of whom have featured regularly on the right wing.

And yet the All Blacks can turn to Waisake Naholo, who scores four tries in four matches on this northern tour and sets up others along the way.

On the other edge what a year it has been for Rieko Ioane, this 20-year-old wunderkind.

From pushing Julian Savea, a bloke with 46 tries in 54 tests now waiting on the periphery for another chance, out of the squad to being nominated for two World Rugby awards, Ioane’s talent seems endless.

The patchy nature of his temporary moustache highlights his youth, and what more there is to come.

On this tour alone he’s bounced

back from the mumps, and recovered inside a week from what was first thought to be a serious shoulder injury.

“I couldn’t lift it up after the game,” Ioane said after scoring two tries and having a hand in two more as the All Blacks put Wales away 33-18.

“Doc did a special treatment on it and a couple of days rest did it wonders.

“It was a bit touch and go even towards the latter end of the week but it came through alright and now it feels pretty good.

“It’s been a pretty disruptive tour with everything that’s been going on.

“I’m happy the medical team and coaches kept faith in me and put me out on the field both times.

“I was pretty pleased with how everything went.”

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen sure was pleased with his star wing’s healing powers.

“Thank goodness his shoulder came right that’s all I can say.

“He’s phenomenal,” Hansen

said. “If we can keep his feet on the floor he could go anywhere that kid.

“He’s got something a lot of other people don’t have, namely myself, and that’s pace.

“Every time he gets the ball you think ‘wow, what’s going to happen?’ He only needs half a yard because he is so quick and he’s strong with it.”

While not quite as spectacular, Naholo’s tour has been just as successful.

“He has just got better and better with the confidence of playing. He’s pretty special too.

“Both of them tonight were big contributors to the team right around the park.

“They score tries and we all see that but there’s other stuff they did as well which was good.”

Naholo doesn’t possess the same strength under the high ball as Dagg and Smith but he has finally established his presence at this level after his first genuine sustained run in the No 14 jersey.

His finishing ability was on

show with two clutch tries – nailing both chances in minimal space to double his tour tally.

Naholo is more than a finisher, too.

Against the Barbarians at Twickenham he created two tries with offloads, and he’s also superb over the ball.

The forwards can’t accuse him of being a pretty boy who stands on the wing waiting for the glory.

“We get told that by the props so getting turnovers in the wide channels is pretty good it gets other teams thinking about wide breakdowns as well.

“I always love getting turnovers.

“I enjoy going into the breakdown and trying to compete for the ball. I work with Sam Cane and the loosies at training sometimes and they really help me a lot. I’m trying to get in there and make a difference.

“I’ve really enjoyed taking the opportunity without Dagg and those senior guys there.

“I’m not really worrying about selection every week.” - NZME

Gatland in awe of All Blacks’ finishing The cliche that rugby is won up front was ignored by Wales coach Warren Gatland following their fighting loss to the All Blacks in Cardiff.

“We were a good chance of winning if we were able to contain the size, power and pace of their wingers,” Gatland said.

Trailing 13-12 at halftime, Gatland says they felt “comfortable” but, crucially, their accuracy was awry after the break.

“Against the best team in the world, they probably nailed two or three moments and we didn’t,” he said. “I thought it was a great test match and we contributed a heck of a lot to it.”

Morrison repays faith Malcolm Shinn’s show of faith to entrust one of the best horses he’s ever trained to the hands of a young up-and-coming driver came up trumps on Saturday when Seaswift Joy claimed the $25,000 Geraldine Cup. Shinn has never been afraid to try something a little different with his horses, so his decision to enlist junior driver, Ashburtonian John Morrison, into the sulky of the brilliant mare should have come as no surprise.

It was not a quickly thought out choice, either. Shinn’s been watching Morrison for a while now.

“He actually lives next door to me,” he said.

“He trains his team of horses on my track, so I’ve been watching him driving and he’s got a very calm and patient style to him so there was no hesitation in giving him the chance to drive her.

“He listens too, which is always a big bonus.”

Morrison actually drove Seaswift Joy to win on debut at Ashburton, before she was sent South to the stable of Colin and Gordon Lee, where she fashioned an impressive record in the three-year-old filly ranks.

“I’ve had a lot of good fillies

and mares over the years, but she’s right up there with them.”

Second up after an eye-catching effort for seventh behind Bonnie Joan on Show Day, both Shinn and Morrison exuded plenty of confidence ahead of Saturday’s feature, despite the depth and talent the field possessed.

“You never want to sound too confident or anything like that, but I was pretty sure she would go close.”

Morrison managed to ping the mare away from behind the tapes and find the lead early before handing up to favourite James Dean.

With that sort of run she was always going to be dangerous and when the gap appeared she blasted through.

“She was actually flat coming off the back, but when I asked her to sprint she just went.”

James Dean fought back inside the final 50 metres to narrow the margin, but was unable to haul in the winner.

Mongolian Hero was best of the rest in third.

Shinn will now send Seaswift Joy to chase the riches on offer in Auckland for the Queen of Hearts where she will most likely join the stable of James Stormont.

A conservative approach to what looms as a career defining campaign looks set to pay dividends for progressive mare Love Affair.

The highly regarded Savabeel fouryear-old stepped out for the first time this season at Pukekohe on Saturday and put up one of the performances of the day as she raced to victory against some tough opposition in a rating 85 1400m contest. Unsighted since completing a three-year-old campaign that yielded three wins from just four starts, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsmantrained mare had been idling around their Cambridge yard waiting for the improved tracks to take hold.

McLaughlin misses title Kiwi Scott McLaughlin has endured a nightmare final Supercars race which has seen him finish 11th but given a post-race penalty and cruelly miss out on winning the championship.

Title rival Jamie Whincup won the race after Kiwi team-mate Shane van Gisbergen moved over to let him through – that move proved the difference in the twohorse race to the title.

Whincup claimed an unprecedented seventh championship.

McLaughlin needed to finish 11th or better to win a maiden championship but was given three penalties by race control for separate mistakes – the last the most controversial.

The 24-year-old made a superb start from pole and led the field through the opening lap.

He held off van Gisbergen and looked like he would claim the championship in a canter but drama struck when he was the third driver to be handed a pit lane pen-

alty for speeding during his first stop.

Replays showed he had engaged the pit lane speed settings that keep the car under the 40km/hr limit but was still judged to have gone too fast as he crossed the pit entry line.

The Shell V-Power driver fought his way back to a position where he had done enough to take the title but made an error on lap 47 in trying to pass Simona de Silvestro and turned her Nissan around.

A safety car helped bunch the field up but Red Bull reacted by getting van Gisbergen to pull over and let Whincup go past for the lead of the race on lap 60.

On lap 90, with an ailing car, he took a major dive at Garth Tander and somehow managed to make the move stick.

He then forced his way by his great friend James Moffat but Craig Lowndes made a move a moment later. McLaughlin moved over on him and they touched, sending the

veteran off and into the wall.

Race control had the call to decide the title and they ruled against the Kiwi.

“I just gave it my all,” a shattered McLaughlin said.

“I lost my left hand mirror so early. I just defended my lines at two and then we got interlocked and got caught up and I genuinely didn’t mean to push him into the wall. And then to pinged like that – anyway mate – whatever.

“It is hard. I just feel sorry for the guys – we shouldn’t have been in that position.

“I’m so sorry.”

Vukona out of qualifier Tall Blacks skipper Mika Vukona will miss New Zealand’s Basketball World Cup qualifier against Hong Kong this morning as coach Paul Henare continues to build depth in his squad.

Henare has brought in Finn Delany as the only change to the 12 that lost 86-80 to South Korea three days ago, Vukona reluctantly stepping aside to give the young forward his chance.

“The decision to leave Mika at home was planned out some time ago,” Henare said. “It’s important that we continue to build depth and expose players to this sort of experience.”

Scoreless stalemate The Football Ferns have dominated possession and territory in the first game of their two-match Thailand tour, but an inability to finish has left them with a frustrating scoreless stalemate. The 11th running of the Longbeach Coastal Challenge has left organisers pleased with what they have described as another fantastic event.

“Everything went extremely well,” committee member Anna Jemmett said.

“We had really good weather and a really good turnout on the day.”

Around 1300 people turned out for the event, participating

in events ranging from the 5km fun walk to the 35k mountain bike challenge.

“We had a lot of comments from ones who had entered previously saying that was the toughest bike course they had done,” she said.

“There have been a lot of changes with the rain we have had and a lot of dry periods.

“There are a fair few participants who will be pretty knackered tonight.”

Anton Cooper took out the male open 35km mountain bike challenge with a time of one hour 19 minutes and 45 seconds.

Nina McVicar did best in the female open 35km challenge, coming home in one hour, 34 minutes and 20 seconds.

Ashburton College student Matthew Clough took out the open off-road half marathon, finishing over a minute quicker than second placed Ben Wreford.

open competition with a time of one hour, 31 minutes and 15 seconds.

Team Big Al’s took out the 35km mountain bike challenge, with the team comprising Glen Currie, Jamie Roberson and Michael Kennish finishing with a combined time of five hours, one minute and 23 seconds.

The next team in was BNZ, with Chris Wylie, Cameron Blain and Nathan Tew coming in 19 minutes for second place.
