Wastebusters might have lost its bid to take over Ashburton’s resource recovery park but its managers say they won’t be giving up the fight to gain back a contract it lost in 2010. With the Ashburton District Council changing its kerbside rubbish and recyclables collection to wheelie bins in 2017 and the EnviroWaste contract

expiring in June, it intended to roll over the current contract for two years. At the 11th hour, at the council’s service delivery meeting last week, community recycler Wastebusters made a bid to pick up the contract for the intervening two years. Councillors stalled on making a decision until yesterday and then found themselves evenly split on an outcome with Ash-

burton Mayor Angus McKay’s vote leaving the contract with EnviroWaste for two more years. In its presentation last week, Wastebusters said it could carve $250,000 off the contract price over the two years and that it would give the council 30 per cent of the income it earned through selling recycled materials. It also said it would create

job opportunities for both ablebodied and disabled people. Yesterday two members of the EnviroWaste team made a pitch for their contract to be rolled over for two years. The best outcome was the one that worked in with the planned switch to wheelie bins in 2017, councillor Stuart Wilson said. Ideally the council needed two years to scope the wheelie bin project fully and to work

through all the options available, tender and let the contract, waste officer Craig Goodwin said. If the council opted not to roll the current contract over, it couldn’t simply hand that contract over to another organisation.

For many young fans the news of Zayn Malik’s departure will be heartbreaking. Young people’s attachments to their idols are often so strong that they feel something close to friendship with them, or even that they are family. Counselling and advisory groups say that during such times of grief young people need support rather than judgment. Sue Minto, head of ChildLine, said it would be unhelpful for adults and other youngsters to “pooh pooh” the feelings of those struggling to cope with Malik leaving the band. “There are young people who are going to feel seriously distressed at the news and people are going to have to get their head around the fact that for some this will be very distressing and not to undermine it, even if they don’t quite understand it,” she said.

Teeth of massive predator found The fossilised teeth and jaw of a giant marine predator have been found in a Hawke’s Bay stream. A Department of Conservation (DOC) ranger and forest manager were searching for whio (blue duck) when they instead found the jaw fragment and teeth of a mosasaur – a marine reptile that lived 80 million years ago. The mosasaur was the dominant predator in the last 20 million years of the Cretaceous period. The fossil was found in the Maungataniwha Native Forest in inland Hawke’s Bay – the same area where famed palaeontologist Joan Wiffen found the first evidence of land-based dinosaurs in New Zealand. Forest manager Pete Shaw and DOC biodiversity ranger Helen Jonas were searching in a small stream when they saw a rock with bone in it. When Mr Shaw jumped into the stream to fetch a branch to lever the rock loose, he felt something rough and lifted out another rock containing the jaw fragment. Scientists at Wellington’s GNS Science have confirmed the fossil as a mosasaur, but don’t know which species yet.

The BBC has announced it is dropping one of its most popular presenters, Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, after he verbally and physically attacked a producer. “It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract,” BBC Director-General Tony Hall said yesterday, two weeks after the presenter was suspended from the hit motoring show. Clarkson’s contract expires at the end of this month.

A leading New Zealand military historian has written a Gallipoli book for children that he hopes sensitively conveys the horrors and heroism of war. Roly the Anzac Donkey tells the story of the doomed World War One campaign for readers aged 4 to 8 through the eyes of a donkey. Glyn Harper, professor of war studies at Massey University, said he had to use his imagination to “think like a donkey” in order to portray the realities of the Gallipoli campaign in a way that children could relate to. It is based on the real donkey men, or medical corps soldiers, who used donkeys to carry the injured and dead from the battlefields. Prof Harper’s donkey man is inspired by the life of New Zealand soldier Richard “Dick” Henderson, immortalised in a Horace Moore-Jones painting that fetched $257,950 at auction on Wednesday.

Mid-air birth A Boeing 777 bound from Miami to Doha has been forced to make an emergency landing after a pregnant passenger gave birth mid-air to a baby boy. The birth took place just hours after the Qatar Airways flight took off from Florida on Monday and before the pilot was able to make the emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland, eastern Canada. With the help of two doctors travelling on the plane the woman gave birth to a healthy boy, Brian Hicks, safety manager at Gander International Airport, said. “Thirty minutes before the plane was preparing to land, she gave birth to a baby boy,” said Hicks. “There were two doctors on board, they assisted with the birth. “That’s the youngest passenger we’ve ever had at Gander.” The plane was on the ground for some two hours while the mother and newborn were taken to a local hospital, before it then flew on to the Gulf.

Mid Canterbury is a land of milk and honey – as a delegation from Shanghai have discovered. Representing Shanghai Liang Ya International Trade, a company which markets high end imported food predominately through television shopping channels throughout China, the group is here to make a commercial to promote honey produced by Midlands Apiaries. Midlands Apiaries global sales and marketing manager James Annabell said the company exports hundreds of tonnes of honey into China annually. “It is one of our biggest growth markets,” he said. “This is a relatively new venture. They used to use another company’s honey.” The company began importing Midlands honey after representatives visited in May last year. Mr Annabell said Chinese

consumers trusted New Zealand produce, in terms of food safety and purity.

He said consumers worldwide increasingly wanted to know where their food came from and

how it was produced. The film crew worked from a helicopter on Wednesday, cap-

turing the district’s sights and some of the honey producing areas from the air. Yesterday morning the visitors met Ashburton mayor Angus McKay, and visited Midlands Apiaries processing factory. Then it was off to the bush, to meet veteran apiarist John Syme in the beech forest at Staveley. Mr Syme talked about honeydew – produced by bees from the secretions of an aphid which lives in the bark of the beech trees. He said honeydew has yet to hit its stride in export markets. “This forest is unique in the world,” he said. “Beech honey has been on these trees for millions of years – it is highly under-rated. I believe it is better than manuka in terms of its nutritional properties, but it has never been properly tested or researched.” Midlands Apiaries took over Mr Syme’s hives and business when he retired several years ago.

Texts convince phone thief to have change of heart By MorgaN TaiT By contacting their stolen mobile phone, a group of Auckland students have sweet-talked their possessions back from a remorseful robber. A sequence of texts show the savvy University of Otago students communicating with the man who stole their handbags from a Christchurch carpark this month. Screenshots of the exchange show the alleged thief at first

mocking the women, before succumbing to guilt for stealing from “poor as” students and finally agreeing to return what he took. In Christchurch for a friend’s 21st birthday party, Aucklanders Kate McDonald, Kate Randhawa, Julia Kerr, Briar Middleton and Olivia Van Diepen, all 20, left their possessions in a locked car while they visited the New Brighton Pier on their way back to Dunedin on Sunday, March 15.

Arts and law student Ms McDonald said the group returned from the pier to find the locks of her Toyota Corolla picked. And while the bulk of their luggage was still there, four handbags containing their wallets, passports, IDs, bank cards and Ms Kerr’s mobile phone had been taken. “So we started driving back to Dunedin and thought, ‘They have Julia’s phone, why don’t we try and contact them and see if

anything comes out of it’.” Ms McDonald sent a message to Ms Kerr’s phone making light of the situation: “Sorry we didn’t have much cash we are povo students [sic].” The person with the phone replied, joking about the bags’ contents and admitted to spending the small amount of cash in them on lunch. Encouraged by the response, Ms McDonald called the phone and a young-sounding man answered.

“I was just like, ‘What’s up? How’s it going?’ and ended up having a big convo with them – and he said he felt really bad and they were really sorry.” Ms McDonald managed to wrangle a deal with him to drop the gear at Spencer Beach Holiday Park – about 16km north of where it was taken from – for the women to collect. But he also offered a warning: “Nexts tym take ya bags with ya [sic],” he advised. - NZME

12 companies to pick from now The choice of electricity supplier for people in the Ashburton District is about to get a whole lot wider. From seven, the number of retailers offering to supply electricity has grown to 12. Energy Online, Glo-Bug, Pulse Energy, Simply Energy and Opunake Hydro have signed up their first customers.

Most of the new retailers are now actively chasing customers. Ashburton’s largest retail brands are Meridian Energy and Trustpower, who between them have about 6300 connections. Last year there was a significant expansion of retailer brands in New Zealand and that means better deals for consumers, says Electricity Authority

chief executive Carl Hansen. “Generally these new brands are being set up to target niche markets or consumer segments so this is a good indication of intense competition in the market and that retailers are seeking ways to differentiate themselves,” he said. New Zealand’s electricity market was one of the most competitive in the world with

two-thirds of Kiwis being approached by rival retailers at least once in the previous two years with offers to switch, Mr Hansen said. Maternity audits Cases where a woman becomes seriously unwell during maternity care will now be audited by a panel of experts. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman announced the news yesterday, saying it is important that new mothers and babies receive high quality care across New Zealand. The Severe Acute Maternal Morbidity Audit looks into cases where pregnant women, or those who have recently had a baby had been admitted to ICU and looked for factors that may have been avoidable. The ministry will invest $2 million over the next four years into the audit programme.

Closing in on suspect Staff at Invercargill’s Splash Palace aquatic centre are narrowing their list of possible suspects responsible for defecating in the pools. Manager Peter Thompson said staff were “confident” children were to blame and they also knew when the contamination was occurring. There have been 12 incidents of faecal matter found in one or more of the complex’s three pools, termed “code brown”, on the past six consecutive Friday evenings. “We are incredibly frustrated. It has gotten to the point where it cannot be an accident,” Mr Thompson said. He estimated each incident had cost thousands of dollars to rectify, and in lost revenue. - NZME

New car gifted to hospital’s community services By Caitlin Porter

Advance Ashburton Community Foundation has come to the rescue of Ashburton Hospital’s Community Services. The foundation purchased a new vehicle, a $20,000 Ford Fiesta, for the department. The official handover of the vehicle took place yesterday. Charge nurse manager Jane Hartnett said the addition of the car was very much appreciated.

“There is an increasing demand for health services in the community and an increasing unavailability of pool cars to deliver the services,” she said. At times, staff were having to use their own cars when no pool cars were available. The new car will not be a part of the Canterbury District Health Board fleet at the hospital, it is solely for community services to use for short-notice visits within Mid Canterbury, Mrs Hartnett said.

Community services treats patients in the comfort and security of their own homes and the team – which consists of seven clinical nurse specialists, three dieticians and four need assessors/service co-ordinators – will all have access to the new vehicle. Mrs Hartnett said it will be used every day and will make a real difference in the way community services staff are able to see patients in need, she said.

Advance Ashburton deputy chairwoman, Elizabeth Ashford, said the purchase of the car came from the foundation’s health fund. “Donors to the fund, like the late Lynda Frampton, are passionate about preserving and enhancing health services in our community and particularly at our hospital,” she said. Through the fund, Advance Ashburton is also supporting the rebuild of the hospital and the purchase of equipment.

Health authorities have declared Canterbury measles free, after two children were supposedly diagnosed with the disease earlier this month. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said although initial lab tests in both cases were positive for measles, further lab testing had left health authorities confident the cases were not measles. “Further lab testing, combined with no identified source nor spread makes health authorities confident the cases were not measles,” Dr Humphrey said. - NZME

Peters still in front A second poll has NZ First leader Winston Peters with a commanding lead in the Northland by-election just a day out from polling day. The One News Colmar Brunton poll has Mr Peters on 54 per cent support while National’s Mark Osborne was back on 36 per cent - similar results to the 3News Reid Research poll on Wednesday. The Colmar Brunton results also showed Mr Peters’ high results were courtesy largely of Labour voters - 69 per cent of Labour supporters polled said they would vote for Mr Peters in the byelection. In brief Roadshow donation A roadshow with a difference hits Ashburton today when the latest in the Ford Motor Company stable is lined up at the Ashburton Showgrounds. For every test drive on Saturday, Ashburton’s Ford dealer Gluyas Ford will donate $50 to charity, up to $3000. The nominated charity is the Cancer Society. The roadshow will offer car buyers an opportunity to get up close and personal with a new range of vehicles from the Ford stable. Postie delivers his farewell By Sue NewmaN

Rain, hail, wind or snow for more than 30 years, David Aberhart and his bike have ensured the mail has (almost) always been delivered to Ashburton mailboxes. But come Monday, David won’t be donning his red and yellow uniform, mounting his bike and heading off to work at NZPost. He’s called time on what started off as just a job and became a career he loved. “To be honest, it was just a job at the start. I was 22, I’d lost my job as a cycle mechanic, had been unemployed for a few months. “When I took it on I didn’t know it would become a fairly good career.” He admits he’s loved virtually every moment of the job. He’s moved from street postie to head of the postal service,

biking some days and walking the town beat. He’s lost count of the kilometres he’s cycled and walked, but knows he’ll miss the daily exercise routine when he and wife Joanne move to Motueka. Over the years the nature of the job has changed as mail volumes have dwindled. He recalls the early days when people waited at the gate for the postie to come and people for whom the arrival of a letter from their family was a regular occurrence and the highlight of their day. “Back then a lot of older people didn’t like to use their phones, they preferred talking by letters.” The weather is sometimes the postie’s friend, often his enemy, David said. “Snow has always been the most difficult and there are times when you wonder, where do you draw the line. I remem-

ber days when we’ve had to walk the postal runs for several weeks because of snow and ice. It was just too slippery for bikes. “There’ve been all kinds of challenges but we’ve made them fun, working in pairs.” While the mail is technically always supposed to be delivered, NZ Post has a rule that a postie can call it quits if they believe the conditions compromise their health. “I’ve been caught in the wind, the snow and the rain and there were days after the earthquakes when the mail didn’t get out. Wind is probably the worst thing because there are things flying all over the place. You can be outside for four or five hours on a stinking wet, windy day or when its 30 degrees plus and that’s tough.” He’s never been knocked off his bike, but has fallen off more times than he cares to remem-

ber, once breaking his wrist. And there’ve been the dogs. “I’ve been bitten on the bum by a little dog and chased by quite a few but dogs are not so much of a problem now, you flick off a text and the council’s dog control people take care of it. I can still bike pretty fast if I have to.” If the job’s changed in 30 years, so have the bikes. David started out on a single-speed bike, progressed to a threespeed and now has a top of the line five-speed. He’s stopped short of moving to the battery powered E bike. He admits he’s going to miss the job – and the community. “It will be sad leaving, you can’t walk away from 30 years in a business and not be sad but I’m looking forward to the next challenge but I’m going to have to get out and do a lot more biking and walking or I’ll end up a blob.”

And he sounded a warning that failing to tender the contract correctly could open the council to legal challenges. “If you’re looking for a legal

challenge, the resource recovery industry is where you’ll get it from. “If you only tendered between two companies you’d get a challenge. “I recommend you do a full tender if you are going to the market,” he said. The resource recovery industry was a cut-throat one and the council had to be sure it had

all its ducks in a row, Mr Dalziel said. “You have to treat a community group the same as you’d treat a commercial group. You’re still trying to get the best deal for ratepayers and remember you’re locked into wheelie bins in 2017.” It made sense to roll the contract over for two years as it would be tendered around May

next year for the new wheelie bin service. That would give the successful tenderer about a year to plan for the change, Mr Wilson said. Councillors Wilson, McLeod, Nelson, Nordqvist, Brown, Totty and the mayor voted for the two year roll-over, while councillors Beavan, Reveley, Favel, Urquhart, Ellis and Cutforth did not.

Two teacher aides caught passing drugs at an Auckland primary school have resigned. The staff, at Rowandale Primary in Manurewa, were reported to the principal by a teacher who saw them exchanging “foils” in the staff room after hours. An internal investigation found the drugs were marijuana, and the school suspended the two aides without pay following a board hearing. They were allowed to return to work if drugs tests came back negative. A statement said the staff had decided to resign yesterday following media attention. “They are truly sorry for the pain and trouble they have put Rowandale school and its community through,” the school said. - NZME

Cannabis operation The annual police cannabis recovery operation on the West Coast netted 2361 plants. About 30 search warrants were executed up and down the West Coast during the six-day operation in early March, using an Air Force Iroquois helicopter. Greymouth CIB detective senior sergeant Dan Keno said the quantity and quality of the cannabis recovered this year was better than last year. “If we hadn’t come along it would be fair to say growers would have had a good season,” Mr Keno said. Five people were charged with a range of drug-related offences. - NZME

Forestry death An elderly forestry worker has died after being struck by a falling log in a remote forestry site yesterday morning. The man, aged in his 70s, was struck by a log during a logging operation in the Te Wera Forest, east of Stratford, Taranaki, police said. It was believed the log fell off a truck, WorkSafe New Zealand said earlier. - NZME

Chance encounter A driver’s chance encounter with police at the Greymouth BP service station late on Wednesday night led to his arrest for drink-driving. Police were making inquiries at the service station about another matter, and smelled alcohol on the driver as they walked past him on the forecourt. The 25-year-old man got into his vehicle to drive away but was met by a police officer and was subsequently accompanied to the Greymouth Police Station for an evidential breath-test. The man’s reading was 515mg; the legal limit is 250mg. - NZME

Sexton’s house to be demolished For close to a century a large wooden house has been standing guard over those who have their final resting place in the Ashburton Cemetery. Little is known about the origins of the villa, but over many years it has been home to a succession of cemetery sextons and their families. The sexton’s role was both grave digger and superintendent and for many years that role was filled by Ron Chapman, but when he retired, the house was rented for many years. It later served a role as a tea room and office for cemetery staff but in recent years has been used for storage. Today it is considered uninhabitable and it is on the council’s demolition schedule. No date, however, has been set for its date with the bulldozer, said council open spaces manager David Askin. Racist rant put online By ReBecca Quilliam A video of a racist rant on a Wellington bus against two young men who appeared to be Muslim has been published online. The incident happened on a NZ Bus in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae on Wednesday morning. The footage, shot by an Iraqi Muslim woman sitting behind the man, shows the man calling out to the pair and accusing them of being “Islam c***s” and “shooting innocent people”. “Go back to your own country,” he said. The woman who filmed the episode, said she was terrified that the man would turn around. “I think if he saw me filming him he would have come and punched me in the face.” The footage caught just a small amount of the rant, she said. Innovation is in the spotlight at the South Island Agricultural Field Days under way on a bigger site in Kirwee for the first time this year. The biennial event opened on Wednesday and attracted up to 9000 people keen to view the latest agricultural developments at work and on static display. Numbers were expected to swell yesterday and today. SIAFD has been held at a site near Lincoln University for the past 32 years, and both exhibitors and members of the public were enjoying the space the new 40 hectare site has to offer. This year more than 550 companies have set up shop, up from 350 in previous years. Organising committee member Daniel Schat said the event was off to a great start. “We have had a lot of positive comments about the layout of the site, the traffic flow in and out was good,” he said. Machinery demonstrations were popular attractions, including the Tractor Shoot Out where operators performed a series of tests and tasks, judged on performance, cab comfort and layout. A new fencing demonstration – the Bat-

In brief Suppressed until trial A prominent New Zealander charged with indecent assault has been granted interim name suppression until the beginning of his trial. Heavy suppression orders mean the man cannot be identified, nor can his alleged victims or their ages. Name suppression lapsed on February 19 but the man had his identity protected for one month to allow him the chance to appeal. The appeal was lodged on March 19 and heard yesterday in the High Court at Auckland before Justice Raynor Asher. Several media organisations lodged a joint request for the appeal to be heard with urgency. The man denies 12 charges of indecent assault against two people, including two representative charges. After battling cancer and coming through a “horrible” treatment regime, Ashburton’s Mark Cherry is looking forward to walking alongside fellow survivors this weekend. At the start of the Relay for Life there will be a Heroes for Hope walk involving about 200 cancer survivors and supporters. “I think it will be an amazing experience,” Mr Cherry said. The 46-year-old was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2013, after visiting his GP having suffered severe pain in his lower right abdomen for about three weeks. He could feel a lump in the area which was getting bigger, and suspected appendicitis. The pain he was suffering

intensified after a biopsy and putting his back out while in hospital, so when doctors told him what the problem was it hardly even registered. “I never thought it would be cancer, it never even crossed my mind,” Mr Cherry said. Mr Cherry is a keen Variety Theatre of Ashburton actor, singer and dancer and also runs his own gardening business. He lives in Ashburton with his partner Tania Cochrane. Eighteen weeks of chemotherapy followed the diagnosis, and while it was horrible, he had actually expected worse. He was not worried about his hair falling out, and even organised a hair-shaving party at Braided Rivers, which was packed with family, friends and clients. Other side-effects such as

nausea and strange taste sensations, numb and burning feet and fingers were more troublesome, but Mr Cherry’s way of dealing with it was to be as involved in life as possible. He remained a part of the day-to-day work of the business, although bowed out of the physical side of it for a while. He still attended family events and weddings and continued to perform. Today his cancer is in remission and he is optimistic it will stay that way. Manager Relay for Life Canterbury/West Coast Kate Shearer said the Heroes for Hope walk was a celebration of life. “We see the survivors who come along as our VIPs,” she said.

RELAY UPDATE The Relay for Life committee have been busy this week, making team packs, finalising the track and team sites and collecting gear. Relay for Life senior staff partner Kate Shearer said compared to the relay in 2012, there has been a real jump in the number of participants in each team. So far 67 teams have entered with a total of 900 participants. If it fits … “We remind all taking part in the event that we relay to represent the journey a cancer patient takes every day, by walking/running laps of the track. It’s not meant to be easy, cancer treatment isn’t, but with help from your friends you’ll be able to walk through the night and feel the hope a new day brings,” Mrs Shearer said.

Positive comments; visitor numbers double In just over one month in its new West Street home, Ashburton’s museum has doubled its visitor numbers. More than 2000 people have visited the museum in its first month of business; during the same period last year the number was under 1000. That growth in visitor num-

bers has been excellent, particularly when it is backed up by the positive comments in the visitor book, museum manager Michael Hanrahan said. “While there’s no doubt some people are visiting just because the facility is new, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of visitors from out

of town, especially from overseas,” he said. Many visitors have said they would be returning for another visit. In its first weeks of operation, nine schools have either visited the museum or have visits booked, Mr Hanrahan said. A number of other groups,

such as rest home residents, have also visited and quite a few have been making use of the museum’s research facilities. “It all adds up to the museum doing what it is here to do – telling a wide range of people the story of Ashburton in an attractive manner,” he said.

A train driver narrowly missed hitting an “idiotic” driver playing ‘chicken’ on the Totara Flat rail level crossing on Wednesday morning. Police said they were still tracking down the driver of an older black Toyota saloon which was seen crossing in front of the train on the Stillwater-Westport railway line at the controlled Raupo crossing at 10.40am. Several other similar incidents have been reported at the same crossing recently. Police described the latest incident as “idiotic driving”. Wheels were reportedly heard “screeching” as the locomotive engineer applied the brakes as a result of the car driving in front of the train. - NZME

Succession changes Royal daughters will have the same claim to the throne as sons under new rules of succession, which came into force yesterday. The new legislation applies in New Zealand and the 16 realms that share the Queen as head of state. The new gender neutral rules of succession apply to any baby born after October 28, 2011. Justice Minister Amy Adams said the three main changes under the law were that order of succession would no longer be based on gender, a person married to a Roman Catholic could accede to the throne, and only the first six in line to the throne must seek the Sovereign’s permission to marry. Previously all members of the royal family were required to seek permission. - NZME

Brown walks out Auckland Mayor Len Brown yesterday walked out of a council meeting following a stoush with councillor Cathy Casey over port expansion. After pushing for a debate on the issue as an item of extraordinary business, Ms Casey responded to Mr Brown’s refusal to the request by accusing the mayor of not listening to the people of Auckland. When Mr Brown asked Ms Casey to withdraw her comment because he regarded it as a personal insult, and she didn’t, he asked her to leave the chamber at the Orewa service centre. Mr Brown then walked out. The meeting resumed about 20 minutes later when Ms Casey agreed to apologise and withdrew her comment. - NZME

Pilot ‘locked out of cockpit’ An official with knowledge of the audio recordings from the Germanwings flight that crashed in the Alps says one of the pilots apparently was locked out of the cockpit when the plane went down. The official, who was not authorised to speak publicly about the investigation, told The Associated Press yesterday that the details emerged from recordings recovered from the black box found among the debris of the aircraft. The New York Times earlier quoted an unidentified investigator as saying someone can be heard knocking on the cockpit door. The Times quoted the source as saying: “And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer.” The Airbus A320, on a flight from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, inexplicably began to descend from cruising altitude and slammed into a remote mountainside in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.

Since the September 11 terrorist attacks, airlines in the US don’t leave one pilot alone in the cockpit. The standard operating procedure is that if one of the pilots leaves – for example to use the toilet – a flight attendant takes their spot in the cockpit. It was not immediately clear if European airlines have adopted the same practice. Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr described the pilots as “experienced and trained” in a press conference in Barcelona. Lufthansa has refused to identify the pilots, or give details of ages and nationality, but it said the co-pilot joined Germanwings in September 2013, directly after training, and had flown 630 hours. The captain had more than 6000 hours of flying time and been a Germanwings pilot since May 2014, having previously flown for Lufthansa and Condor, Lufthansa said. - AP

The BBC decided yesterday not to renew the contract of Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson after a fracas with his producer, ending his connection to the immensely popular programme built around macho banter, off-colour jokes and cars. BBC Director-General Jeremy Clarkson Tony Hall concluded that Clarkson struck and launched a 30-minute verbal attack on a producer, Oisin Tymon, while they were filming on location, leaving him with a swelling and bloody lip. The producer went to a hospital for treatment. Hall acknowledged that lifting the presenter of the programme “will divide opinion”. But he said a line had been crossed in Clarkson’s often controversial behaviour – even if he is a big star. “There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations,” Hall said. Fans have clamoured for Clarkson’s return, signing a petition which was delivered to the BBC in a tank. Prime Minister David Cameron called Clarkson a friend and a “huge talent”. Will Wyatt, a former director of BBC television, said Top Gear without Clarkson would be “a bit like the Musketeers without D’Artagnan”. Clarkson has often found himself in trouble for remarks lacking in political correctness and behaviour deemed offensive. He was given a “final warning” last year following a racism row. He has been repeatedly saved by the programme’s huge popularity, a valuable whollyowned property of the BBC. The current series was launched simultaneously in more than 50 countries and created versions in the United States, China, Australia, Russia and South Korea. The show will go on — the BBC said it would renew Top Gear for 2016. But it did not say whether co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond would be asked to return. - AP

Iran’s foreign ministry says airstrikes in Yemen are a “dangerous step” that will worsen the crisis in the country. The statement from Tehran comes after Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes targeting military installations in Yemen held by Shiite rebels who are storming south in a bid to secure their hold on the country. Some of the strikes are hitting positions in the capital, Sanaa. The statement from Iran Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham did not name Saudi Arabia but called the airstrikes an “invasion.” - AP

President ‘too busy’ Indonesian President Joko Widodo has been too busy during the past three weeks to accept a phone call from the Australian prime minister to plead for the lives of two death row prisoners, an Indonesian envoy said. Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Nadjib Riphat Kesoema yesterday brushed off suggestions of a diplomatic snub. “The president was so busy,” Kesoema told reporters in Canberra. Australia’s efforts to save the lives of the Australians has strained diplomatic relations between the close neighbours. - AP

uddenly, Northland does not seem too far from Mid Canterbury. The Northland by-election looks set to do more than fill a vacant seat – for good or ill, it looks likely to change the way the current Government does business. If Winston Peters wins this weekend’s vote, and the polls suggest he will, then the balance of power will shift ever-soslightly to the smaller parties that support the National Party. Pre-by-election, National needed just one support vote to pass laws. Post-election, it may need two – which means keeping at least two people happy for as long as possible. United Future’s Peter Dunne and Act’s David Seymour – each just one vote but the embodiment of an entire political party – will have new power to insist on new concessions. The Maori Party’s two MPs will be in the same waka. Suddenly, parties with influence that is far from proportional to their electoral support will have even more power. If it comes, Mr Peters’ win would also alter the proportionality of Parliament because New Zealand First would have the 11 list MPs to which it was entitled from the 2014 election, plus Mr Peters as an electorate MP. All this is not lost on the National Party, which knows it needs the numbers to continue the policy programme on which it campaigned during the general election. It knows it needs the numbers to continue what it started and it knows it will be judged next election on what it has achieved – and on what the small parties stopped it from doing. Over the past few weeks, it has promised roads, bridges and jobs and yesterday, Prime Minister John Key made Northland his first stop after arriving from Japan. Mr Key says Northland will lose its voice in Government if Mr Peters wins the seat. He might easily have said the Government could be shushed by its emboldened supporters. Mr Peters will not be in Government come Monday, but his influence will be felt there until the next general election.

their proposal. This man is very experienced in the field of recycling and working with people with disabilities. I am pleased to see Wastebusters are using his skills and experience to assist them. I also am involved with IHC/ Idea Services in Ashburton as a committee member and mentor. I know they have clients that would be well capable of working in similar positions and give them some purpose in life and raise their self-esteem. As a community we should get behind Wastebusters and give them our support in their proposal and if it’s half as good as the Southland organisation it will be a great asset to the community. The lesson here is ‘boys, if you have enough money, you don’t really have to worry about the consequences of your actions even if they were really dumb’!” Is that what the parents of the two St Bede’s rowers are saying to their lads? Everybody makes mistakes and even a clean-living young man like myself has made plenty, especially when I was 16 and 17. If I was in their shoes with a group of my peers egging me on, there’s a pretty good chance I would have ridden the baggage carousel through the “flapped” opening into the authorised personnel-only area. The difference is that in my day I would have been sent straight back to school, had a few stripes added to my butt from the cane and then got further punishment when I arrived home. And I wouldn’t have done it again! Also in the years to follow when others are egged on to do something equally stupid or worse, they may just stop and think, ‘wait, remember what happened to those two fellas who rode on the carousel’ and behave themselves. I’m not having a lash at the boys here, they did a dumb thing, but as Nigel Latta has told us many times, teenagers aren’t right in the head. They still need to learn from their mistakes and realise there are consequences for their actions. I am having a go at the parents and the judge, who probably had her hands tied by “the system”. Why doesn’t principal Justin Boyle have the backing of the parents? Did they not agree with the school’s code of conduct? I understand the parents didn’t want their boys to miss out on New Zealand team selection, which they would have

done if they didn’t row in this event. Tough! It’s all part of the consequences. If they are driven enough in the sport they will make their New Zealand dreams happen in years to come. I feel like in this day and age, when our kids get in trouble at school, the parents question the school first and back the kids instead of the other way around. Surely if you don’t have enough faith in the systems and actions of the school you are sending your kids to, you are doing your kids a huge injustice by sending them there, so move them to another school. I feel for Mr Boyle, the parents’ actions must be a huge kick in the guts for him. In fact I feel for all teachers, especially secondary school teachers. Some of the kids have very little respect for them and it appears some parents are in the same boat (see what I did there?). I guess these boys have been taught the value of securing themselves a well-paying job, as money it seems can buy your way out of trouble. What happens when their boss tells them off in the future or even gives them a warning?

Airlines boost tourism Tourism has returned to strong international growth for the first time since the global financial crisis, boosted by an increase in airline capacity. Figures show tourism generates $65 million a day across New Zealand - $37 million in domestic expenditure and $28 million in international spending. The tourism industry was now in a strong position to take advantage of growth opportunities, according to a report released by the Tourism Industry Association and Lincoln University. - NZME

BY BRENDAN MANNING Deloitte’s latest bribery and corruption survey has uncovered “a significant level of corruption” in businesses on both sides of the Tasman. The 2015 Deloitte Bribery and Corruption Survey canvassed the views of 269 public and private sector organisations across New Zealand and Australia and found 23 per cent of respondents reported experiencing one or more known instances of domestic corruption in the past five years - more than half occurring in the past 12 months. Deloitte lead forensics partner Barry Jordan said the survey was the second of its type but the first that asked about bribery and corruption from a domestic perspective. “Almost one in four organisations reporting an incident is a significant level of corruption,”

Merger approval likely The Commerce Commission is likely to allow Cavalier Wool Holdings and New Zealand Wool Services International to merge their two wool scouring operations, which would ultimately make a monopoly of wool scouring services in New Zealand. The antitrust regulator found in its draft determination that while the merger would see NZX-listed Cavalier Corp have an essential monopoly on wool scouring, the public benefits outweighs any loss of competition, as rationalisation of the industry would lead to lower costs, free up industrial sites and reduce ongoing capital expenditure requirements. - NZME

Commodity prices having big effect

ith only a few days trading left in March and with plenty of action from the first quarter of the year, it is a good time to have a quarterly recap. The NZX50 is backing up a sterling run for the eleventh consecutive quarter. Although March has shown some weakness for the NZ market as investors took profits from high yielding stocks that have run hard this year, it has ended up reasonably flat for the month and up more than 5 per cent for the quarter. Our Central Bank has changed to a very neutral stance and in its last monetary policy statement intimated that rates were likely to remain steady for the foreseeable future. The New Zealand economy has also had to contend with falling commodity prices, particularly from the dairy industry. As our number one export, changes to the dairy industry have a large effect on the country’s economy. Dairy prices appeared to have turned a corner rising for six auctions in row, however, this trend was reversed in the most recent auction with prices falling 9.9 per cent and dashing hopes of a potential rise in the forecast payout. Fonterra announced its half year result this week and reaffirmed its forecast payout of $4.70 per kilo of milk solids.

This accompanied a disappointing result, which saw margins decrease and profit fall causing a 10 cent cut to the expected dividend. Over in Australia, the ASX200 has had an amazing run up around 9 per cent for the quarter. March has been a slightly more difficult month with the index falling back slightly, however, this is slightly misleading given that many stocks have paid a dividend during the month, and subsequently share prices have dropped. The Australian economy continues to face headwinds as the slow down in the mining sector is creating slack in the labour market and seeing capital investment rates wane. The Reserve Bank of Australia cut rates during the quarter by 0.25 per cent however surprised markets by not cutting rates further. It is widely anticipated that there will be another rate cut in the near future employing a loosening monetary policy in order to drive economic growth. In the US, the S&P500 has had a challenging week

as currency headwinds have hampered share price gains and investors start to look towards the next reporting season on top of processing data that has missed expectations. So far the S&P500 is up for the year but has erased a lot of its gains this week and is now quite flat for the year to date. This quarter saw a change in stance from the US Federal Reserve which is adding to falls in share prices, as it moved closer towards a rate rise. Last year the Fed completed its quantitative easing programme as the economic recovery became more robust. In its latest monetary policy statement the Fed removed the word ‘patient” from its commentary, indicating that a rate rise was on the cards before the end of the year. By its own volition, by removing the word patience from its commentary a rate rise could occur after another two months. However the Fed also stressed that rate rises would be determined on the data presented at that particular meeting and that it would act accordingly. Lockheed broadens horizons The head of one of the world’s most innovative fish farms sports a scruffy beard and talks about saving the planet by moving “toward a culture of nurture”. His office is a trailer near the beach, where the views are of dolphins, the mission is progressive and the dress code is loose. All of which makes Neil Sims’ partnership with Lockheed Martin a most unusual corporate alliance. The world’s largest defence contractor is best known for making the weapons that unleash cataclysmic fury on America’s enemies, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. But lately, it has set its sights on a different threat to national security: climate change. In the past few years, Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed has launched a series of new initiatives - harnessing energy from tides, purifying water, nuclear fusion, and, yes, a new, environmentally friendly way to farm fish in a cage that drifts off the Hawaiian shore. Chief executive Marillyn Hewson touts the ventures as growth opportunities, a calculated effort to go green at a time when defence spending is shrinking after more than 14 years of sustained warfare. The move comes as the Pentagon has classified climate change as a significant threat, saying natural disasters and scarcity of food and water could create widespread instability requiring military intervention. That’s why Lockheed, employer to thousands of scientists and engineers, is marshalling its forces in what many consider the unlikely new fields of energy and the environment.

But Lockheed’s efforts have been met with scepticism from some analysts who say the company is moving too far from the fighter planes, combat ships and guided missiles that have made it a powerful force in the defence industry and a safe investment. It’s an effort that is unlikely to benefit shareholders, they say, because any returns are likely to be a long time in coming, if at all. Other defence contractors have tried to break into energy fields, but some quickly admitted defeat, saying they should stick to what they know best. Among the reasons critics have been quick to doubt Lockheed’s forays into alternative energy are that the early results have been spotty, and some of the science sounds more like science fiction. One of Lockheed’s most ambitious efforts has been years in the making, a headline-grabbing attempt to build a nuclear fusion reactor small enough to fit in the back of a truck. The technology holds out the

hope of solving global problems of energy supply, with almost no harm to the environment. Late last year, Lockheed announced a breakthrough - a design for a compact fusion reactor that the company said it could produce in 10 years. But being able to create a reactor so small within a decade is still more ambition than reality, several sceptical scientists said. Although the fate of its fusion project may still be years away, another attempt to unlock a clean source of energy - the power of ocean waves sank quickly. After Lockheed partnered Ocean Power Technologies to build what it called “the world’s largest energy wave project” off the Australian coast, the project failed within six months. Corporate filings declared the venture “no longer commercially viable,” and Lockheed’s partner dismissed its chief executive and got mired in legal battles with investors. Several other defence con-

Crusaders face the Bulls Three South African teams, led by the conference-leading Stormers, provide the opposition for New Zealand and Australian sides as Super Rugby reaches the one-third point of its season this weekend. The Stormers, who lead the South Africa conference by a point over the Sharks, play the Highlanders in Dunedin on Saturday just after the Cheetahs take on the Chiefs at Hamilton. The Bulls play the Crusaders in Pretoria. They go into the match with 14 points each from three wins and two losses. The third-place Bulls are just two points behind the Stormers in the South Africa conference while the Crusaders are in fourth place in New Zealand, eight points adrift of the Hurricanes. - NZME

Hampstead are the only Mid Canterbury side starting the Combined Country Cup rugby competition at home tomorrow. The new season kicks off with all five local sides hoping to get off to a winning start, but only the one having home field advantage. In section two of the 20-team competition Hampstead host Ashley in a repeat of last year’s opening fixture - one which Ashley claimed convincingly 41-8 at home. The opening round loss started Hampstead’s run of seven straight defeats before

picking their first of only two wins in 2014, which both came at home. Southern had to wait until the sixth round last year to register a win, and finished the round robin with back-to-back victories which included a 2917 win over tomorrow’s opponents Ohoka. Last year’s semi-finalists Methven are in Rangiora to start their campaign against Saracens – a trip they have made once in 2013 collecting an 18-15 victory. Elsewhere in section two newcomers Rolleston get their first taste of the top level hosting 2014 runners-up Waihora,

while Darfield played BurnhamDunsandel-Irwell last night to kick things off. Over in Section one, Celtic are away to Oxford - a side they haven’t played in the round robin since 2011 - while Rakaia crosses the river to meet Southbridge, with both sides ousted in the playoffs by eventual champions Lincoln last year, while Rakaia had taken the round robin matchup 26-12. Lincoln open their title defence away to Kaiapoi while Glenmark host Hornby, who return to the top level for the first time since 2010. After the nine week round robin the top four teams from

each section move into the playoffs, culminating with the final on June 13. The North Canterbury, Ellesmere and Mid Canterbury sides then break off to complete their respective local competitions. Mid Canterbury sides have a full round robin before the Watters Cup final on August 1. Due to the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Hawkes Bay, likely to be on July 23, there will be no semi-finals with the top two teams from the round robin advancing straight to the final. # Take an in-depth look at each team in tomorrow’s Guardian.

Chiefs welcome the return of Sonny Bill The Chiefs have been boosted by the availability of Sonny Bill Williams (right) for Saturday afternoon’s clash with the Cheetahs at Waikato Stadium. Williams missed last weekend’s loss against the Sharks but was always expected to quickly shake off the concussion he suffered a week earlier. The second-five’s return to the starting XV is one of five changes from the disappointing defeat to the Sharks, with the only other switch to the backline seeing Tom Marshall replace James Lowe on the left wing.

An entire new front row is the feature of the forward pack, with Hika Elliot’s one-week suspension handing Quinton MacDonald his first start for the Chiefs. John Kirwan has decided not to rest some of his All Blacks for Saturday’s match against the Waratahs after all, but there has been no hesitation in putting Dan Bowden into first-five now that, finally, he is fit again. A new signing for the Blues this year, he travelled to South Africa with the rest of the team after the opening loss to the Chiefs, only to return after the Stormers match because there was no improvement in a ligament problem which has tested his patience to the limit. Premier League clubs posted a pre-tax profit last season for the first time in 15 years, according to a report released by business advisory firm Deloitte yesterday. The 20 teams in the English top flight in 2013-14 generated a combined profit of STG190 million - the first profit since 1999 and almost four times greater than the previous record of STG49 million set in 1997-98. Triathlon is supposed to be a noncontact sport but Ryan Sissons has the physical evidence to prove otherwise. The New Zealand triathlete was kicked and punched in the face in his last race, the World Cup event in New Plymouth last weekend, and emerged with a black eye. “With the amount of competitors on the start line and the rough conditions and everyone fighting on a short first leg of the swim, it became difficult as everyone converged,” he said. “I got swum over and pulled back. I was mauled, kicked and punched in the face. From then it was difficult to rectify.” From that point, his race was essentially over, but he has a strong desire to put together a strong race in Sunday’s ITU World Series triathlon in Auckland. - NZME

Mid Canterbury secondary schools will send a 36-strong contingent to the South Island Secondary Schools’ athletics championships in Nelson this weekend. Both Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College will send 18 athletes after the two colleges combined for two new records and 37 individual titles at the Aoraki championships earlier this month in Timaru. Among the Ashburton College entries is Felicity Dalzell who took the Aoraki honours in the girls’ under 16 100m and 200m, and will also run in the 400m, while Gareth Hunt had

wins in the under 16 boys’ high and triple jump, and will run the 100m. Keegan Gentle won the under 15 boys’ 100m and long jump in Timaru and will also run the 200m and the under 16 relay. Leading the Mt Hutt contingent will be Aimee Elliott, who took over 30 seconds off the under 15 girls’ 3000m Aoraki record when she stopped the clock at 11:18.51 as she finished almost two minutes clear of her nearest rival. Mid Canterbury Stockcar and C Grades Championships as well as an expected big turnout from 10 support grades. Speedway president Lance Maher was excited by the size and variety of fields including the “rare full field of TQs” that will take to the track and eight

quad bikes also set to race. Drought conditions forced Maher to postpone the Memorial Meet to avoid creating a dustbowl and avoid potential fire risks, but after some rain finally falling the track is ready to race. The two commemorative trophies will be up for grabs

where the Philip Duffield Memorial Trophy will create a fierce contest in the adult ministock and the A grade saloons will race for the Jo Giles Memorial, the TV and speedway personality who lost her life in the February 2011 earthquake.

Living World Cup dream BY BEN MCKAY Most of New Zealand can hardly believe they’ve finally made a Cricket World Cup final, and Matt Henry is no exception. Except Henry is set to play in it, swapping a spot on the couch for the middle of a sold-out MCG on Sunday. Paceman Henry was only called up to the New Zealand squad for their astonishing semi-final victory over South Africa on Tuesday, replacing injured speedster Adam Milne. The 23-year-old was plucked from the Plunket Shield straight into one of the greatest moments in Black Caps history - and responded brilliantly with a five-over, nine-run first-change spell. Now, within eyesight of the World Cup final venue, Henry is preparing to play on the biggest stage of all. “It’s pretty hard to believe, you’ve got to pinch yourself,” he said yesterday. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity to have ... it’s unfortunate for Adam, it’s not the situation you want to be in but it’s the nature of the beast.” Henry said he discovered he would be joining the squad at a cousin’s engagement party last week, and he’s barely stopped smiling since. He’s vowed not to be overawed by the challenge despite what lies ahead as New Zealand move from the com-

fort zone of their home grounds to an MCG packed with 90,000 fans. “To go from a Plunket Shield game with not too many people being about, to everyone screaming your name at Eden Park was a bit of a contrast,” said Henry, who has never played at the MCG. “It felt like 90,000 at Eden Park. We’ve got plenty of Kiwis here, I’m sure it won’t be an issue. “It’s about focusing on your processes. You’re playing cricket. Nothing changes.” Henry said the mood of the Kiwi players as they awaited the opponents in Sunday’s final was excitement. Milne completed his 10 overs only twice in six matches which was down to Southee and Boult doing the early damage. Best outing was 2-56 against Sri Lanka but his pace was very handy, before being ruled out of the tournament with injury. To celebrate 10 years of the event, organisers of the Mt Somers Bike race are doing things backwards. This year competitors in the annual mountain bike race will ride the wrong way around the course on Sunday. “It is just a little something differ-

ent to celebrate the milestone of 10 years,” Mayfield and Districts Lions race organiser Aubrey Aitken said. The race, which winds its way through the historic Mt Somers Station, again offers three events - the 35km Challenge 30km Foothills and the 20km lowlands - but each will be raced in the opposite direction. The other key difference is the date,

with the race date being brought forward four weeks. For the past two years bad weather in April has caused the postponement of the popular race. “Bringing the race forward we are confident the temperature won’t be as cold. “We may get some showers again this year but it won’t be as terrible as

we have had the last two years.” The entries were tracking towards 500 with a large number of walkup entries, who wait to see what the weather is like, expected on the day.
