Presbyterian church-goers have been stunned and shocked by the failure of St Paul’s Church on Oxford Street to meet new building standards.

A final service is planned there on Sunday with the congregation then to begin a discussion about its future.

A recent seismic assessment that gave the church a D grade was unexpected, said the church’s interim moderator, the Reverend Brent Richardson, of Timaru.

An initial evaluation in 2013 assessed the building at 44 per cent of New Build-

ing Standards so it was a surprise the actual strength was as low as 31 per cent (a D grade), he said.

Church guidelines dictate it can no longer be used and there will be further consultation and assessment to see what is needed to bring the building back up to an acceptable seismic code.

Reverend Richardson said the news was communicated to parishioners at St James’ Church in Tinwald on Sunday.

Devon Tavern ram-raider sentenced An 18-year-old man who took part in a ram raid on the Devon Hotel was sentenced to nine months’ supervision when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week and ordered to pay $2500 to cover half the cost of the hotel’s insurance excess.

Matiu Morunga was also sentenced to 100 hours community work and disqualified from driving for six months.

He had pleaded guilty to charges of burglary at the Devon on March 3, driving with excess breath alcohol (662mcg) and breaching bail.

Morunga was the front seat passenger in a ute that was driven into the front doors of the Devon.

He and his co-offender targeted the ATM machine inside but could not open it; they then attached strops to the ATM and tried to drag it out of the hotel.

They eventually climbed over the bar and took beer worth $40 and left.

A forensic examination of the

burglary scene led to Morunga’s arrest.

Morunga’s lawyer Roz Burnside said her client was not happy about paying the full $5000 insurance excess.

The hotel had made an insurance claim to repair the front doors but was out of pocket $5000 because of the excess it had to pay.

She said Morunga had no previous convictions and was easily led.

Judge Maze said it was clear Morunga had been influenced by a more experienced offender but pre-sentence reports still concluded he was at a higher risk of reoffending.

He should take part in cultural opportunities and interventions as well as drug and alcohol treatment, she said.

A warrant for the arrest of the other man charged in relation to burglaries of the Devon and Hotel Ashburton, Alizter Koyla Watson, was issued earlier this year.

He is said to be in Australia.

Reducing trauma on our roads

Getting behind the wheel of a car as a young driver or passenger can be among the most dangerous things a person does in their entire life.

But senior students at Ashburton College have brushed up on potentially lifesaving knowledge and skills this month through the Rotary Youth Driving Awareness (RYDA) programme.

Run by Road Safety Education Limited, a not-for-profit organisation, RYDA is committed to reducing trauma on our roads.

According to statistics the most dangerous time for any young road user is in the first six to 12 months of being a solo driver.

“Young people continue to be

over represented in deaths and injuries on our roads. It is a national tragedy that over 80 young people aged 15-24 died on our roads last year,” Road Safety Education Programme manager Maria Lovelock said.

“For each one of these fatalities approximately 20 more suffer life changing situations such as brain and spinal injuries.”

She said there are a number of reasons, some outside a young driver’s control, why they are at such high risk. Their brains are still developing, they exhibit sensation-seeking behaviour, they are greatly influenced by peer pressure, often drive less roadworthy cars and often drive at night or for fun.

“It’s up to us as a community to bridge that gap of inexperience and underdevelopment with as many tools as we can for better planning and decision making. That’s what the RYDA programme is all about,” Lovelock said.

The RYDA programme is coordinated through local Rotary clubs to help make our roads safer, with support from sponsors including BOC, NZ Steel, Bridgestone, BOSCH and the Alexander Group, and the Ashburton District Council.

To date, more than 50,000 students have completed the RYDA programme in New Zealand.

Reverend Richardson said the church was also awaiting results of a detailed seismic assessment on St James. The results would give a clearer picture of the assets and liabilities of both parishes and inform the path forward, he said.

“It is very difficult at this early stage to nail down a time frame but the parish and community will be kept informed of progress and key decisions needed as they arise.”

The church expects it would be very expensive to bring St Paul’s up to 67 per cent of the building code it requires.

Reverend Richardson said the cost would fall mostly on the parish. An Alpine Presbytery fund could provide limited funding, but it favoured new initiatives rather than restoring building stocks. The parish is currently seeking a permanent minister and is under the temporary care of retired minister Reverend Helen Wallis.

The building revelation added to the challenge of finding a minister, but there is no rush to fill the vacancy.

St Paul’s was built in the late 1960s and dedicated on September 27, 1970. Services were held in the church hall from 1946 until the church was built.

Sunday’s final service in St Paul’s will have a theme of “past, present and facing the future journey with God”. It will start at 10am.

Ashburton’s Jean Kingan is getting much attention as she turns 100 today, but is not sure what all the fuss is about.

“You don’t feel any different actually to what you normally do, except that you get more cards,” she said.

Kingan is also not sure her life so far is all that remarkable, and does not think she has done anything out of the ordinary to live healthily to such an old age.

“It’s been very uninteresting really. I have had my sad times and my very happy times.”

Sad times included losing her husband Russell as the couple were expecting their fourth child.

Russell had served overseas in World War Two as a pilot. He was away for more than three years as Kingan cared for their first-born, only to be killed upon his return some years later in a recreational light airplane crash.

Kingan remained on his parents’ farm at Overdale to bring up the children, and considers herself fortunate in that she had so much support.

“His parents were wonderful, I just lived in their cottage on the farm. The same with my parents (at Mt Somers), I was very lucky.”

“But mums are doing it today under different circumstances. I think I used to get lots of sympathy.”

The children attended Rakaia School, and thrived on homegrown vegetables and meat from the farm.

Today Kingan continues to live independently, and has eight

She has always been a homebody, enjoying knitting, baking, cooking, gardening and caring for family.

This is how she mostly gets her exercise, and exercise is something she believes in, albeit in moderation.

“Running 50 miles or something silly like that, I don’t really

think your body is built for that,” she said.

So her secret to a long life is really no secret at all.

“I think it’s in your genes, because all my dad’s family lived well into their 90s,” she said.

She is grateful for the many cards she has received from family and friends, and it was lovely to get a card from the Queen.

She recalled well singing God

Save the Queen as the national anthem throughout her younger years at so many events, even before movies screened in picture theatres.

Kingan is looking forward to celebrating her birthday with family at the weekend, where many are to attend from throughout New Zealand.

“I’m going to wear pearls at my party like the Queen,” she said.

Building a resilient, vibrant community Inclusivity was a key message delivered by visiting guest Aleem Ali to a room of community leaders supporting the Welcoming Communities initiative.

Ali, national manager of Welcoming Cities Australia spent the day in the Ashburton District sharing with key groups and leaders’ key messages about the importance of attraction and retention of newcomers to support the success of a resilient and sustainable district.

Attracting newcomers, by challenging the negative discourse through positive messaging, was encouraged by Ali. However more important was the retention of newcomers once here through tangible and real inclusive actions driven by the community.

Like many regional towns across Australia, the Ashburton District faces demographic and economic challenges, including increasing labour demand and an ageing population.

These challenges will give rise to continued sustained growth and prosperity over the long term. Fostering connections be-

tween newcomers and locals through inclusive practice has proven to be a key stepping stone toward revitalisation, sustained growth and harmony across many regional towns in Australia.

Ali commended the community on the existing work of business and community groups to promote and drive welcoming and inclusive best practice. He further commended the newly adopted Welcoming Plan, Whakatau mai ke te rohe o Hakatere under the Welcoming Communities initiative, recognising it as an important driver of supporting even more welcoming practices, with the plan’s success resting with the community.

“Communities that connect and actively include people from different cultural backgrounds offer a greater quality of life for its residents and help people reach their full potential,” mayor Donna Favel said.

“We want to continue fostering the Ashburton District as a place of acceptance and inclusion and further build a resilient and vibrant community where everyone can be part of our economic,

cultural social and civic life.

“The Ashburton District Welcoming Plan aims to encourage local communities to take a greater leadership role through inclusive activities and initiatives. Our Welcoming Plan affirms our council and the district’s commitment to work as one”.

While in the district Ali, along with a delegation from Immigration NZ leading the Welcoming Communities initiative, participated in a number of activities.

This included a powhiri at Hakatere Marae involving youth from the Ashburton College kapa haka group, presentations to the mayor, councillors and local Member of Parliament, Jo Luxton, guests of the local Muslim Association at the new mosque in Tinwald, a tour of the EA Networks Centre – a key facility driving inclusive and welcoming activities and discussions with local Sports Canterbury branch manager, Jan Cochrane about the importance of sport as an equaliser and activity to reduce barriers, remove isolation and generate inclusive practice.

Over $10,000 raised by living on sardines and beans

It took teamwork, grit and tough stomachs, but a little group of Methvenites have raised enough money to feed 40 Syrian refugees for a year.

By taking on the “ration challenge” and living on dried chickpeas, sardines and beans throughout last week, 14 Our Lady of the Snows school staff, parents and supporters raised over $10,100 for Oxfam.

The group finished their challenge on Sunday and were named the top fundraising team in New Zealand.

It had been a hard, but amazing experience for all involved, deputy board chairwoman Cara Smart said. “They were a pretty awesome team. Everyone stayed in constant contact.

“Someone would send a message saying ‘ooh I really feel like ice-cream’ and others would say ‘no, you’re doing great, hang in there’,” she said.

Coffee proved the toughest thing to give up for some members of the team, who suffered withdrawal headaches, she said.

“But it all went amazingly well and we’re still talking to each other, so that’s a bonus!”

It was the first time the team had taken on the ration challenge.

The money raised will be used to provide ration packs to Syrian refugees in Jordan and also help Oxfam deliver hygiene, medicinal products and education to people in poverty around the globe.

The distribution of the funds will be transparent to donors.

Fourteen Methven locals have earned the title of top Oxfam fundraisers in the country.

“We anticipated donations would stop after it was over, but they’ve just kept flowing in,” Smart said.

“Perhaps people were just waiting to see if we would make it.”

And Smart said she was confident they had indeed made it without anyone cheating.

“Once you start getting a few sponsors you feel like you have to go through with it.”

The Our Lady of the Snows team has done a massive amount of fundraising over the years, but it was good to do something outside their little bubble, Smart said.

SAR group boosted by hunters

Hunters from all over the South Island brought their best game to the Hotel Ashburton carpark on Sunday.

More than 220 animals were weighed at the annual Mid Canterbury Hunting Competition, following a sunny weekend in the wilderness.

Organiser Richard Clucas said the number of entries was on par with previous years.

By the weigh-in at 2.30pm, slightly fewer boars were made up for by a higher number of red and fallow deer.

The haul also included tahr, chamois, wallabies, rabbits and hares, and a kids’ section invited entries of mallard ducks, rabbits, hares, possums and wallabies.

A total of $7000 in cash prizes was divvied up between different categories, Clucas said, along with spot prizes like clothing and sleeping bags.

Prizes were also on offer for the annual carrying race, during which children and adults hauled animals around a racetrack.

The event was also held as a fundraiser, benefiting Methven Search and Rescue to the tune of $1000.

It was the 11th time the competition has been held.

driving charge A Mid Canterbury man who pleaded guilty to his fifth charge of drink driving was sentenced to six months community detention when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Dean Allan John Breading, 49, was also disqualified from driving for six months.

Breading was caught over the legal breath alcohol limit driving on Elizabeth Avenue in Rakaia in March. He blew 470mcg.

His lawyer Paul Bradford said although it was Breading’s fifth drink drive conviction, the most recent was nine years ago,

and at a low level compared to previous occasions.

Judge Joanna Maze said Breading’s previous convictions were in 1988, 2008 and two in 2009 and all had been close to or more than 1000mcg. But he had become a responsible and contributing citizen.

She said community detention was still a significant penalty but would allow him to keep his job.

“However if you drink and drive again, imprisonment is the inevitable starting point and it may well be the finishing point as well.”

Hoping to initiate natural revegetation of forest The Presbyterian Church has been given $18,200 for a massive weed control project at its Staveley Campsite.

The camp sits on 9ha of black beech forest, a rare slice of native forest that was once logged and is now infested with noxious weeds including ivy.

The church put its plan for a three-year weed control project to the Ashburton Water Zone Committee this week and the committee allocated $18,200 from its Immediate Steps biodiversity fund.

The church will seek similar amounts next year and in 2020.

The natural character of the forest was being overtaken by weeds like ivy, cotoneaster, blackberry and sycamore seedlings, biodiversity officer Sarah Heddell said.

Popular deputy principal Andrea Griffin is wrapping up seven years at Ashburton College and stepping into a role at one of the largest schools in New Zealand.

At the end of this term, Griffin will make the big move to Burnside High School in Christchurch, where she has been appointed assistant principal.

She said she would treasure her time at Ashburton College, including the continual lasting friendships that she had made.

“They really are an amazing group of people,” she said.

Since entering the education industry in 1991, Griffin has taught at a number of schools in the UK and worked as a senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth.

She has also taught at Mt Hutt College and Timaru Boys’ High before joining Ashburton College in 2011.

She spent a year working as head of science before becoming deputy principal, including a spell as acting principal in 2017.

With 2500 students, Burnside High is roughly twice the size of Ashburton College, and zoned.

Heddell said the church had a plan for the Staveley campsite to become a biodiversity learning centre where schoolchildren could learn about the environment.

The Staveley Camp forest was ideal for teaching about the need for environmental weed control as it had an impressive range of weeds, a forest that was big enough to understand the problem, but not too big to be overwhelming.

“Restoration of the Staveley Forest will undoubtedly benefit the local indigenous biodiversity and can play an important role in the health of the wider eco-system, especially with its impact on hearts and minds.”

Facing up after anthem hatchet job Y

ou mess with New Zealand and our traditions and you should expect to be publicly criticised for it.

At the weekend, New Zealand made international headlines when an American jazz singer made a complete hatchet job of our national anthem in the lead up to the New Zealand and England Rugby League match in Denver.

Her performance, in which she appeared to get off cue and struggle with her timing, left thousands taking to social media and the airwaves to voice their disgust at the performance – in which it was actually quite clear to see that the singer, Crystal Collins wasn’t at all to blame for what was transpiring.

The Maori verse of the anthem can be hard for even the most ardent of New Zealanders – and if you’ve ever been to a sporting match where the anthem is sung, you’ll have noted how much louder and clearer the crowd becomes when the English verse begins.

But for an American, who had been practising singing the anthem acapella only to be told in the lead up that there would

be a backup track playing before not being able to to hear that backup track – it must have been extremely difficult.

But, the question is, did Collins deserve the grilling she received from New Zealanders?

And is it a turning of your back to the patriotic nature of our country if, at the end of the day, you weren’t that offended?

I slide into the latter category, I felt more sorry for Collins than I did aggrieved at her performance. But I also felt humoured watching the New Zealand team sing away to their own tune while the person who is supposed to lead the song struggled.

We have this habit here in New Zealand of getting up in arms about things like our anthem,

and also the haka. Those from other countries who don’t understand the cultural significance of the traditional war dance tend to make a bit of a mockery of it which puts them in the firing line.

Often, those same people, gain a new-found respect when they are told of the importance of the haka underlining that it’s more about education than it is anything else.

But do we need to be so precious?

Yesterday morning on Radio Sport, Crystal Collins was given her shot at redemption.

She was given a time slot on the popular radio show and spent most of the time apologising for what unfolded – her voice

at times showing the strains of emotion and embarrassment – I thought her conversation alone was enough to let things go.

But then Collins was offered the chance to right the wrong through singing the Maori verse of our anthem and she delivered a really polished and strong performance – one that had she been able to produce on the weekend, would have made any Kiwi feel proud.

Just facing up to the music on a New Zealand radio station would have been tough enough – but to then go a step further and deliver a live performance over telephone took some real strength.

Hopefully that should be the end of it and we can all move on with our lives, Collins included.

A passionate advocate for our district’s youth T

hey say it takes a village to raise a child – and our district has a series of villages and a lot of children.

As a passionate advocate for the youth of our district, I wanted to highlight some of the excellent achievements and opportunities that some of our young Maori people are involved with and the wonderful organisations supporting them.

The youth programme – “Whakapiri te oranga o nga uri whakatipu – embracing the Maori way of life on the marae with and for our rangatahi” led by the Hakatere Maori Wardens, has nurtured young Maori youth in our district over the past 12 months.

The initiative is all about encouraging and empowering at risk youth to reconnect with their culture and community.

Students have participated in activities such as learning Maori carving techniques, collection of kai (through fishing), Kapa Haka and Mau Rakau (traditional martial arts).

It’s been heart-warming watching the change that has occurred in the 30 youth that undertook the 12-month programme.

The programme, a first (and potential template) for New Zealand, couldn’t have happened without the $30,000 of funding from Te Puni Kokiri (the Ministry of Maori Development), and the support of Latoya Leef-Graham, Alex McLeod,

It’s important, particularly for young Maori, to have strong role models. People like Erana Te Moananui. Erana is the former head girl of Mount Hutt College and is currently studying criminal justice and sociology at the University of Canterbury.

I have been fortunate to build a strong relationship with Erana through the Tuia mentorship programme.

The Tuia Programme is an initiative led by Local Government New Zealand and the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs to encourage and nurture leadership skills in Maori youth across the country.

The programme lets Erana explore local government and civic leadership, build strong networks within the district, and participate in community services projects.

It’s also an opportunity for us to learn from one another, an experience that I have found

especially beneficial.

From 6-9 July, Erana will be in Rotorua at a hui with the other Tuia Programme participants from around the country, who she has made great connections with.

Erana says being involved with the programme has been a life changing experience for her and has helped her learn more about her cultural identity. I am honoured to watch her leadership skills grow.

Ashburton College graduate Alyce Lysaght is a local Maori woman stamping her mark on the world.

As the inaugural recipient of the prestigious NBS Alumni scholarship, as well as a host of other awards, she is now studying for a degree in engineering at the University of Canterbury.

With a keen interest in helping to fight climate change, she is aiming to specialise in Natural Resource Engineering.

Alyce is also immersing herself within the wider academic community, as the first-year representative on the executive of the Women in Technology Society (WITSOC), a representative for the Student Volunteer Army, and an InSchools volunteer for Engineering without Borders.

I’ll be following Alyce very closely as she continues her studies.

ronica Wall is another incredible young Maori woman putting Ashburton on the map.

The 18-year old is a rowing superstar, having just set a world record on her way to winning three gold medals at the New Zealand rowing championships at Lake Karapiro earlier this year.

In August she will be competing for New Zealand at the Junior World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic.

While it’s her third time competing at the junior championships, it is her first time competing in the singles competition.

Fellow Ashburton rower Mollie Gibson will also be competing for New Zealand at the regatta in August. The whole district will be cheering Veronica and Mollie as they go for gold!

Erana Te Moananui, who will talk about her experience in the Tuia Programme, and some representatives of the Rangatahi Wananga programme, will be at council on Thursday, June 28.

This will give the community an opportunity to hear more about the great opportunities for youth in the district, I hope to see you there.

Girl’s mother shoots Kiwi A New Zealand man who travelled to the US home of a 14-year-old girl he had communicated with online was shot by the girl’s mother, a sheriff said yesterday.

Troy George Skinner, 25, was shot after he allegedly smashed a glass door and tried to enter the home in Goochland, Virginia, said sheriff James Agnew.

New Zealand Police said in a statement it is aware of the incident and will assist US authorities when necessary.

The Goochland County sheriff said Skinner was found with duct tape, pepper spray and a camouflage folding clip knife with a 7cm blade.

The duct tape and the knife had been purchased from a Walmart on the day of the attack.

Agnew said the girl’s mother saw a man trying to enter her home, warned him several times she had a gun, then fired after he broke the glass on the second door he tried to open.

Skinner, 25, was struck in the neck and remains in the intensive care unit at VCU Medical Center, according to authorities.

A spokeswoman for the hospital told the Herald she had “no information to give about that patient at this time”.

Troy George Skinner The sheriff said Skinner first encountered the 14-year-old girl using the Discord chat service that allows video-gamers to communicate via their PC or smartphone.

After three or four months of conversation, the girl attempted to end their communication.

“He was not invited here, he was not expected here, he had been told in the past that the daughter no longer wished to communicate with him,” Agnew said.

“All I can say is the manner in which he attempted to enter that home – in the face of a firearm pointed at him and

the implements we recovered from him – the only inference is that he had very bad intent.”

Agnew said Skinner will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit a serious crime.

He has asked federal authorities to assist in the investigation. It is believed the FBI will pursue federal charges against Skinner.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told the Herald the ministry was in contact with Skinner’s family and has offered consular assistance, however, for privacy reasons would not comment further or provide more information.

A Herald source also confirmed Skinner was not facing any criminal charges in New Zealand and had no historical New Zealand court matters.

Skinner had entered the US last Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport.

He had flown from Auckland to Australia, Australia to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles to Washington DC. From DC, he took a Greyhound bus to Richmond.

“This was not random, not spontaneous, this was something very planned,” Agnew said.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin sues children Legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin is suing two of his children and a former business manager, accusing them of misusing his credit cards, transferring money from an account and slandering him by saying he has dementia.

Aldrin’s lawsuit filed earlier this month in a Florida state

court came a week after his children, Andrew and Janice, filed a petition claiming their father was suffering from memory loss, delusions, paranoia and confusion.

They asked for the court to name them his legal guardians, saying Aldrin was associating with new friends who

were trying to alienate Aldrin from his family and that he had been spending his assets at “an alarming rate”.

Court-appointed mental health experts planned to evaluate Aldrin in Florida today.

In April, the 88-year-old Aldrin underwent his own evaluation conducted by a

geriatric psychiatrist at UCLA, who said Aldrin scored “superior to normal” for his age on tests.

The astronaut says his son has swiped nearly half a million dollars from his personal bank account in the past two years, reports The New York Post.

Aussies spend $6.9 billion on drones Australia’s government says it has bought the first of six US-manufactured long-range drones that will cost 6.9 billion Australian dollars and significantly increase the nation’s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

Defense Industry Minister Christopher Pyne told Parliament on Tuesday that the first MQ4C Triton had been bought from Northrop Grumman for $1.4 billion.

Pyne said the drone would give Australia high-altitude reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities across 10 per cent of the world’s surface.

He said Australia would ramp up its defence spending to 2 per cent of gross domestic product by 2020, a year earlier than had initially been promised.

President Donald Trump has been critical of US allies that he accuses of not spending enough on their own defence.

Boss unapologetic over 70hr weeks

An investigation by the police commercial vehicle safety team found the accident was caused by the brakes on the trailer not working correctly because of a mechanical fault.

Lowe said the Pine Hill accident was “a lesson for us”, and the company had changed its service schedule as a result.

“We were doing drum brakes on

a 10,000km cycle so we pulled that forward to 5000km, which actually means for us that in many cases the trailers are serviced every four days.”

Reserve Bank to spend more

By Tina Morrison The Reserve Bank of New Zealand, which has the task of maintaining a sound and efficient financial system for the country, keeping prices stable and supplying the currency, expects to spend more than its agreed funding allows for next year as it takes advantage of earlier underspending.

The RBNZ’s budget shows it expects to spend $69 million in the year ending June 30, 2019, which is $7.7 million above the $61.3 million set out in a funding agreement between the finance minister and the Reserve Bank governor specifying how much of the bank’s income it can use to meet operating expenses each year.

The bank, headed by Governor Adrian Orr, intends to cover the

shortfall from under-spending in earlier years, it said in its Statement of Intent 2018-2021 released yesterday.

The bank’s five-year funding agreement through to 2020 was inked under the previous Governor Graeme Wheeler, and last year’s budget showed he expected to undershoot the funding agreement for the first three years, with spending in the current 2018 year expected to come in $7 million under budget at $59.3 million.

The bank’s latest statement published yesterday notes that for the first two years of the funding agreement, aggregate under-expenditure was $22.6 million.

“The accumulated underspending in the early years of the funding agreement was due to the capitalisation of staff time on

major projects, higher than budgeted profits for (settlement system) NZClear, and the slower than forecast rate of the replacement of Series 6 bank notes with the more expensive Series 7 bank notes,” the bank said.

“The bank is planning to stay within the aggregate funding levels agreed for the full five years of the funding agreement, with expenditure in the latter half of the period exceeding the annual levels specified in that agreement.”

The bank, which has more than $27 billion in assets, expects net investment income of $275.9 million in the 2019 year and projects an operating surplus of $206.9 million. Its budget last year forecast a surplus of $195.7 million for the current year ending June 30, 2018.

HRV pleads guilty to 11 charges HRV Clean Water Limited (HCW) has pleaded guilty to 11 charges of unsubstantiated or misleading claims about the benefits of its water filters.

The charges were laid by the Commerce Commission in the Auckland District Court under the Fair Trading Act. The charges relate to claims made by HRV between July 2, 2014, and October 12, 2017, on its website, in promotional materials and to customers and the public at presentations.

The commission alleges HRV made unsubstantiated claims

with careless and drugged driving, while the driver involved in a crash, near Ashburton, was charged with careless driving.

Lowe said the drivers involved in both crashes, who were Summerland employees rather than relief drivers, had fallen asleep at the wheel.

A source who knew several Summerland truck drivers alleged they were “pushed to the limit” by management.

The NZ Transport Agency limits drivers to 13 hours’ work per day before they must take a 10-hour break, while 30-minute breaks are also required every five-and-ahalf hours.

Drivers are allowed to accumulate 70 hours of work before they must take a 24-hour break.

Asked if drivers could work 70 hours per week and still remain safe and healthy, Lowe said they could.

“I work probably close to 70 hours a week ... I think I’ve got a good balance.

“A lot of drivers love what they do.

“They’re happiest when they’re on the road.”

The head of beleaguered trucking firm Summerland has rejected claims his employees are pushed to the limit and says there is nothing wrong with drivers working up to 70 hours per week.

Summerland Express Freight general manager Grant Lowe was speaking this week in his first interview regarding the transport company’s recent spate of crashes.

Police have investigated three crashes involving Summerland vehicles on southern roads since late last year and are now investigating a fourth near Gore earlier this month.

A Summerland truck driver, allegedly travelling on the wrong side of State Highway 1, on the Kilmog, north of Dunedin, was stopped and the driver warned by police last week.

The first crash happened on December 22 last year, when a Summerland truck-and-trailer unit went out of control in Pine Hill Rd as it travelled downhill, before rolling on to its side and coming to a halt near the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

“Most of our trucks and trailers are double-shifted, which means our truck and trailer will be used by another driver [after a shift].

“We’re pretty well known by our suppliers for working our gear hard.”

Lowe said the driver involved in the Pine Hill crash was a “relief driver”, provided by a recruitment agency.

Prior to the crash, Summerland had been assessing the competence of drivers it employed directly, but were “relying on the service providers that the [relief] drivers were competent”.

Following the crash, Summerland now performed its own assessment of relief drivers, Lowe said.

“We put them in a truck, we have a checklist, make sure they can connect, disconnect.

“We go and check ... how they drive.”

Two Summerland crashes at the beginning of this year were found by police to have been caused by impaired or careless drivers rather than mechanical issues.

Soup’s up W

hen the temperature drops thoughts usually turn to soup.

And soup can mean just about anything – vegetable, meat, chicken or lentils. It doesn’t really matter as long as it’s tasty, piping hot and good to look at in the bowl.

Soup, while good on the day it’s made, is often better a day or two down the track. If it’s hearty it can be a complete meal with the addition of a thick slice of bread, or if it’s a consommé it would be a perfect appetite teaser to start a meal.

Hearty bacon soup 2T olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2 bay leaves 2 stalks of celery, chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 1 bacon hock 1.2L stock 400g can whole peeled tomatoes, drained 1t dried thyme 300g pumpkin, peeled and diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 420g can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 4 silverbeet leaves, centre rib removed, roughly chopped Freshly ground black pepper to taste ■ Heat oil in a large, thick-bottomed saucepan on medium heat ■ Add onion and bay leaves and

cook until just softened ■ Add celery and cook for 3 minutes, stirring often ■ Add garlic and cook for a further minute.

■ Add bacon hock, water, tomatoes and thyme.

■ Increase heat to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, uncovered for 1 hour ■ Add pumpkin and carrots and cook for a further 30 minutes.

■ Remove hock from the soup pot to a plate until cool enough to handle ■ Add beans to soup pot and cook for 30 seconds.

■ Add silverbeet and simmer until just wilted.

■ Strip the meat from the hock, chop it, and return meat to the pot.

■ If needed, add 1 cup of water to the soup to thin it to your preference and ensure it is not too salty.

■ Remove bay leaves before serving and season with freshly ground black pepper.

Cauliflower and leek soup 1T butter 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets 1 leek, rinsed and sliced finely 6C stock 6t chicken flavoured stock powder 3 potatoes, peeled and diced ■ In a saucepan fry the leek gently in the butter for 4 minutes with a lid on. Stir frequently.

■ Add the stock, cauliflower, potatoes and stock powder.

■ Bring to the boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes until all vegetables are soft.

■ Liquify with a stick mixer or blender.

■ If the soup is too thick add a little water to thin it out.

Vegetable and chicken soup 2t sunflower oil 1 skinless chicken breast fillet 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 pkt chicken stockpot 1 large carrot, sliced 1 stick celery, sliced 1C broccoli florets, sliced 1/2 C frozen peas 2T chopped parsley ■ Heat oil in a large saucepan and lightly brown the chicken and onion. Mix 2C hot water with stockpot mix.

■ Add to the saucepan along with carrot, celery, broccoli and peas.

■ Bring to the boil stirring and simmer gently for 5 minutes.

■ Sprinkle with parsley and serve with crusty bread.

■ Snow peas and sugar snaps can also be used in this recipe

Pumpkin and ginger soup 1T olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 1kg butternut pumpkin, peeled and cut into cubes 2 cloves garlic, crushed 3C vegetable stock

1T fresh ginger, grated ■ In a saucepan, heat the oil and fry the onion until translucent.

■ Add the pumpkin and garlic.

■ Cook for a few minutes being careful not to burn the garlic.

■ Add the stock and ginger to the saucepan.

■ Bring to the boil and cover.

■ Simmer for 25 minutes.

■ Puree using a stick blender until smooth.

Chickpea and lentil soup 2T oil 1 onion, diced 1/2 t ground ginger 1/2 t turmeric 1/2 t cinnamon 400g can diced tomatoes 1t sugar 90g red lentils, soaked as per packet instructions 1L vegetable stock 420g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2T chopped coriander, plus extra for garnishing 2T chopped parsley, plus extra for garnishing Salt and pepper, to taste 3/4 C unsweetened yoghurt 1C chopped cucumber 1 small clove garlic, crushed 1T chopped mint 4 pita bread Olive oil for drizzling ■ Heat oil on a low heat in a large saucepan and add onion.

■ Cook slowly for 10 minutes or until softened and translucent.

■ Add ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, tomatoes, sugar and combine.

■ Stir in the lentils and pour in the stock.

■ Bring to the boil then reduce heat to simmer for 20 minutes or until the lentils are soft.

■ Stir in the chickpeas and fresh herbs and season to taste.

■ Cook for a further 3 minutes.

■ Place yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and chopped mint into a bowl.

Mix until combined.

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Cut each pita bread in half and then each half in triangles.

■ Place on an oven tray in a single layer.

■ Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 10 minutes.

■ Serve soup hot, garnished with parsley and coriander with pita bread and yoghurt sauce.

Onion soup 6 onions 100g butter 2t brown sugar 6C beef stock 1/4 C sherry 2T flour 3T dark soy sauce ■ Melt the butter, add very finely chopped onions and sugar.

■ Cook slowly for 20 to 30 minutes ■ Add flour, stirring the whole time. Add stock.

■ Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.

■ Add sherry, soy sauce and black pepper to taste.

■ Serve with toasted french bread with melted cheese on it.

Corned silverside 1 onion, sliced in half 1 carrot, cut into 4 1 stalk celery 5 peppercorns 1t mustard seeds 2 bay leaves 1T brown sugar 3T butter 2T plain flour 300g pumpkin, skin removed and diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 1C frozen peas, boiled until tender

duce heat to a simmer for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Alternatively you can use a slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.

■ Place a medium saucepan on a medium heat and add the pumpkin and remaining 2 carrots. Top with water and season with salt. Bring to the boil, then simmer until soft. Drain and add a tablespoon of butter and mash. Season to taste.

■ Remove the meat from pot and allow to rest. Strain the cooking broth reserving the vegetables and 2C of the liquid for the vegetable rue. Discard any peppercorns.

■ To make the vegetable roux heat a small pot on a medium heat and add the remaining 2T of butter. When it froths, add the flour and combine. When the flour begins to bubble slightly and froth, begin to add the liquid, a ladle at a time. It will take 4-5 ladles depending on how thick you want your sauce. When you have a nice sauce-like consistency, add the reserved vegetables and combine. Serve over corned beef with the pumpkin and carrot mash and peas.

■ Smart tip: Slice corned beef across the grain.

No red for Ronaldo Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was lucky to escape a red card against Iran, as Portugal survived a major scare to take their place in the knockout phase of the World Cup. Controversy raged in group B, with both of the final matches dramatically influenced by VAR, the video replay system.

Ronaldo suffered his sixth penalty miss out of 17 attempts for Portugal during the match, leaving his side teetering on the brink and having to survive a late winning chance which fell to Iran.

He had a bit of a shocker, struggling to get into the game at all.

It could have been far worse, after Ronaldo elbowed Morteza Pouraliganji in the face and had to survive a video review of the incident, after which he received yellow card.

Had he been sent off, Portugal may have tumbled out of the tournament, or had to face powerful Uruguay without their best player.

The 33-year-old Ronaldo,

who plays for Champions League champions Real Madrid, looked nervous as the referee Enrique Caceres of Paraguay looked at replays by the side of the pitch in Saransk.

But Ronaldo then laughed as the yellow card was brandished.

Angry Iranian players appeared to think a red card was in order and some fans believe Ronaldo’s superstar image saved him.

It was an ugly incident in a sometimes bitter but also spectacular contest, the drama rising as Spain battled to draw with Morocco in the other group match.

The British Telegraph reported: “Cristiano Ronaldo flirted with expulsion here.

“Frankly, he was lucky to survive ... (he) was lucky to stay on the pitch after the VAR noticed that he had thrust an elbow into an opponent’s face.

“The referee ruled that Ronaldo had elbowed Morteza Pouraliganji in the face.

“But, extraordinarily, much

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson, the former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool star, was among those who felt a yellow card was the correct call.

The video replay system is sinking into players’ thinking – Ronaldo had demanded a check when his early free kick hit the Iran wall, and possibly a defender’s arm.

Lawrenson bagged the earlier penalty decision in Ronaldo’s favour, after another review.

“This is where it’s all a bit of a mess.

“Time had gone on quite a bit. I don’t think it’s a penalty,” Lawrenson said.

The BBC announced that the clash, which saw England book their spot in the World Cup knockout stage, reached a peak television audience of 14.1 million people and 2.8m live stream requests. No shortage of desire and promise

L

osing isn’t much fun.

Just ask the Mid Canterbury Combined first XV rugby team.

It’s something they’ve done a lot of this season in the Crusaders region secondary school rugby’s UC Championship.

But each week, they took to the field with their heads held high and gave it their absolute best, knowing that more than likely they were going to be up against it once again.

They had a never give up attitude which shone through on the field.

While they are yet to win a game this season, they have been there or thereabouts at the halfway point in a lot of their matches.

It was only late in the games that a lot of schools were managing to get the edge.

O’Donnell said, was down to depth.

Those big powerhouse rugby schools like Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College had huge numbers to pick and choose from and there was competition for spots in the team, meaning they had real talent on both the field and the bench.

But in Mid Canterbury it was a different story.

They had just a fraction of the players to choose from and nowhere near the resources of those big schools.

When a player with potential emerged they were often snapped up by one of those bigger schools.

On Saturday, two players in the St Andrew’s College side which beat Mid Canterbury Combined, were former Mid Canterbury players.

This year’s Mid Canterbury side was up against it from the start this season.

Not only had they lost players to clubs and to Christchurch schools, they also struggled to find a coach to lead them into their 2018 campaign.

Not wanting to see Mid Canterbury without a first XV, O’Donnell and Brent Middleton came to the rescue.

But, it was late in the piece – most of the big Christchurch schools would have been training for weeks before Mid Canter-

bury Combined started.

Despite the results they’d had this season, O’Donnell was far from disappointed.

He was positive at the start, and that hadn’t changed.

He knew his side had the potential to rattle a few teams if they could just put the pressure on for another few minutes each game, and he knew what needed to be done to ensure next season was better.

There was still plenty of this season to go, but O’Donnell was already thinking ahead to next season.

He had grand plans of starting fitness training well before the season started to ensure his side hit the ground running.

And with 12 players from this year’s side still at school next year and still eligible to play, hopefully 2019 would play out a lot better than 2018 has so far.

Woods now a Shark Aaron Woods is set to play for Cronulla this Friday night after completing a mid-season switch from Canterbury. The long-mooted move appeared to be dead after weeks of Sharks overtures and an impasse over fees to snare the prop before the June 30 deadline.

But the Bulldogs yesterday released Woods just months into his four-year deal. For the Bulldogs it will further ease pressure on a salary cap laden with heavily backended contracts.

Farah a Tiger again Wests Tigers veteran Robbie Farah insists he has put the fallout over his bitter exit from the NRL club behind him as he prepares to make an emotional return to Leichhardt Oval on Sunday. It was almost two years ago when the Tigers board backed then-coach Jason Taylor’s call to drop Farah to reserve grade, forcing the long-time captain to link with South Sydney last year. Memorabilia up for grabs A rare piece of Mid Canterbury rugby history will go home with the highest bidder at tomorrow night’s JAB rugby fundraising dinner.

A Mid Canterbury centurions rugby jersey signed by every player who has played 100 games for Mid Canterbury will go under the hammer in one of two big auctions which will be a feature of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union’s big annual fundraising night.

All Blacks legend Sir Michael Jones will be the guest speaker at the event at the Hotel Ashburton and the other auction will be of a specially made art work featuring the 55-cap All Black.

Ashburton artist Rhonye McIlroy has produced a one-off painting – A Tribute to Sir Michael Jones – depicting the player who had the nickname of the Iceman during his playing days.

The man himself will autograph the painting before it goes home with the highest bidder.

Bidding is now open in the auction for the painting and it will conclude at the function tomorrow night.

The centurions jersey auction will also conclude tomorrow night.

It is one of two jerseys of its kind but only one will be put up for public auction, with the other to remain a part of the Mid Canterbury

Rugby Union’s memorabilia collection.

The jerseys were personally signed by all 22 of Mid Canterbury’s centurions at a special capping ceremony in 2017.

All profits from the evening will go to junior rugby in Mid Canterbury.

The fundraiser is a threecourse buffet at the Hotel Ashburton, with individual tickets costing $95 and tables of eight or 10 available.

The fundraiser will kick off at 6pm at the Hotel Ashburton.

New Zealand test players will arrive home just one day before the start of round 16 after their flight home from Denver was delayed by storms. Kiwi players were originally due to leave Denver on Monday (NZ time), however their flight to San Francisco was cancelled when an electrical storm knocked out the control tower at the airport. With no other flights available, players spent the night at a hotel. The delays haven’t affected members of the English team, who flew home immediately after defeating the Kiwis.

Apology for anthem The singer of what some have called the worst version of the New Zealand national anthem ever has apologised wholeheartedly before nailing the Māori version live on air. On Saturday, American singer Crystal Collins stumbled her way through the New Zealand national anthem ahead of the Kiwis’ clash against England. Collins was lost throughout the New Zealand anthem. Speaking to Radio Sport Collins said she felt “horrible” about the performance. “I would like to apologise to the citizens of New Zealand. I was waiting for the introduction, but there was none.”

The Radio Sport hosts then asked her if she would like to redeem herself. She accepted, and belted out the version in Māori.

Waratahs expect to lose Hooper for season

By Vince RugaRi Michael Hooper’s Super Rugby season is in doubt with the NSW Waratahs resigned to losing him for at least a month due to a hamstring injury.

The Wallabies and Waratahs captain suffered the injury during Saturday’s third test against Ireland in Sydney.

Assistant coach Simon Cron

confirmed the minimum fourweek timeframe yesterday, meaning Hooper’s only chance of playing again for the Waratahs would be if the side make the finals.

“I know our physios are working with the Wallaby physios ... but it’s very early, so they’ll keep working through it,” Cron told reporters.

NSW is currently top of the Australian conference on 35 points –

only one ahead of the Melbourne Rebels, who they face in a seasondefining clash on Friday night.

The Waratahs then face the Brumbies (home) and Highlanders (away) to complete their regular season.

What to do in Hooper’s absence is a question the Tahs have very rarely had to consider, given the 26-year-old’s blessed run with injuries throughout his career.

Cron said they were yet to decide who will take over as skipper but suggested Will Miller was the leading contender to fill in at openside flanker. Miller played at No.6 in their last outing before the June test window but the return to fitness of Ned Hanigan means he can be moved from there.

Is the Hayne Plane about to be grounded for good? That’s the concern of former NSW hooker Michael Ennis, who has serious concerns about Jarryd Hayne’s rugby league future after watching him put in a mediocre display for Fiji in its 26-14 loss to Papua New Guinea on the weekend. With his time playing for NSW and Australia over, Hayne’s representative commitments now lie with the Bati. But the Eels star failed to have any impact in a game he had every right to dominate. Ennis said he’s worried this season might be the last time footy fans see the Dally M medallist strut his stuff on the field.

Massive contract looms Lewis Hamilton’s long-running contract saga could be concluded before next week’s British Grand Prix.

Hamilton, 33, is in the final year of his Mercedes deal, but after months of negotiations the Briton’s extension – which will rubber-stamp his future with Mercedes for at least another two seasons – is on the brink of being announced.

In what could be his last contract in Formula One, Hamilton is poised to earn £40 million-a-year ($77m) to cement his status as the United Kingdom’s biggest sporting earner.

It is understood Mercedes do not have a formal timeline in place to announce Hamilton’s new deal.

But team boss Toto Wolff hinted after the French Grand Prix – a race which was attended by Mercedes chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche – that a conclusion may finally be on the horizon.

“We don’t want to drag it out much longer,” Wolff said. “I expect it to be done very, very soon.”

The Austrian cryptically added: “Maybe it is about choosing the right moment.”

Mercedes wanted Hamilton’s future to be resolved before March’s opening race in Australia, but they will head to-

wards the midway stage of the season with two vacant seats for 2019.

Hamilton, however, is seemingly certain to stay, and it is likely he will be partnered by Valtteri Bottas for a third year with Mercedes content that the inoffensive Finn is doing enough to retain his seat.

Bottas is fourth in the standings, 53 points adrift of Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo, a two-time winner this season, is out of contract with Red Bull, but Mercedes do not appear interested in the Australian.

Hamilton, meanwhile, is back in charge of the championship after his impressive victory on Sunday.

The Englishman led all but one lap at the Paul Ricard Circuit to move 14 points clear of Sebastian Vettel, who finished only fifth after his collision with Bottas.

The championship pendulum has swung back and forth between Mercedes and Ferrari, but it is Hamilton who now holds the momentum with four races to come in five weeks.

“It can swing so quickly,” Wolff added.

“I don’t expect this result will change much.

“That is going to be the story of the season.”

Richmond host Sydney in an AFL finals dress rehearsal on Thursday night, but neither club is thrilled with the choice of venue. The top-two showdown, which pits the reigning premiers against the team widely expected to be their biggest challengers in September, is at Etihad Stadium rather than the MCG. Hampson misses ton A chronic back injury has forced Richmond ruckman Shaun Hampson to retire from the AFL, effective immediately. The 30-year-old played 98 AFL games for Carlton and Richmond in a career which began in 2007 at the Blues. But he has been managing a chronic back condition for the past two seasons, with his last appearance at senior level coming in 2016. Hampson also made headlines off the field due to his long-term relationship with supermodel Megan Gale.

Federer back for Hopman Roger Federer has committed to return to Perth for the Hopman Cup at New Year, his fifth time representing Switzerland at the mixed teams tennis tournament.

The 20-time grand slam singles champion will pair up with countrywoman Belinda Bencic to defend the Hopman Cup title they won in January. Federer’s presence has been credited as a major factor in the record attendance at this year’s event at Perth Arena. - AAP

■ ON THE MOVE

Quality over quantity Change is in the wind at one of the country’s biggest stables with Tony Barron moving on from his two-year training partnership with brother Ken. Tony has shifted next door, to the property owned by Ray Jenkins, and will train his team from there in the future.

“My wife and I are just going to do a small team; we’re aiming for about eight to ten in work.

“We’ve rented half of Ray’s barn and will be focusing on quality rather than quantity.”

Barron and wife Cheryl sold their farm in Makarewa and moved north in 2016, Barron joining up with Ken and Blair Orange to form a super stable, one which had as many as 60 horses on the books at times.

Across last season and this one to date, they trained 90 winners.

Barron unashamedly admits that he is looking forward to a much smaller workload.

“It’s going to be bloody good, actually; a lot less hassles. We’ve still got some good owners to train for and there are nine weanlings to come through and sell.”

Barron has been breeding professionally for a while now and has mares based all over the country from Woodands Stud at Auckland down to Bryleigh Stud in Gore.

“We’re probably going to scale back a few of those as well and focus on the best few mares.

“There will still be plenty to keep us going, there’s no doubt about that.”

Barron says he leaves his brother’s with “no animosity or anything”, he just says it’s time to get “back to basics”.

Tony Barron “We were always coming up to Christchurch, we didn’t make the move just to join with Ken. “It just timed in nicely and the opportunity came up at the right time.”

The move left Ken with approximately 30 horses in work and plenty of quality stock to go

on with, Tony reckoned.

He says the horse getting him most excited is a rising threeyear-old Bettor’s Delight colt named Global Domination.

“Without being too clever about it, I’m hoping he will be our best one; he qualified at the cup trials and is showing us a lot.”

Those familiar trips to Auckland will be back on the radar, too.

“Definitely, when that extra money comes on stream in March we will be looking to take advantage of that.

“We’re lucky in that we have a number of close relationships up there and I will definitely be looking to bring them up myself or send them to the likes of Josh Dickie to capitalize on the good stakes.”

FORMER ASHBURTON GUARDIAN COLLATOR

Marsh trio on target Stephen Marsh’s Cambridge barn will have three representatives at today’s Rotorua meeting, on what will be a Heavy 11 surface.

The trio of three-year-olds include firststarters Goldilicious and So Wicked, while last-start winner Sweet Nineteen is the stable’s biggest hope, according to stable foreman Rhys Mildon.

The Keeper filly has improved with every run in her four start career and will carry 59kg in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1400m).

“As a last-start winner she probably deserves to carry that,” Mildon said.

“She got through it well at Te Teko (on the Heavy 10 surface).

“It will probably be a bit heavier tomorrow, but Rotorua is better than most places when it is heavy like that.

“She’s still maturing, but she’s in good form and doing well.

“Both mentally and physically she’s slowly getting stronger and every time she has a race she switches on even more.”

Earlier in the day, Goldilicious will carry the Rosemont Stud colours in another NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race on the card over 1230m, while Street Cry filly So Wicked will line-up in the Arawa Park Lounges For Your Function (1230m).

“Goldilicious has been given plenty of time to mature,” Mildon said.

“It might be a bit too testing for her, but she is a filly with ability and her trial (at Taupo where she finished fourth) was a pretty easy trial, but Stephen does rate her quite a lot.

“So Wicked is a filly of David Paykel’s and she is having her first start as well, she has won two trials in a row, so will head in to tomorrow in good form.”

While John McDonnell’s name is no stranger to the honours board at the Celtic Squash Club, there was a brand new name in the ladies column after the club’s annual championships finished up at the weekend.

Julie Smith is playing a lot of squash after a comeback to the sport, and it showed as she impressively went through the women’s A grade round robin unbeaten, only dropping single games to both Melissa Wilson and Kirsty Clay.

Wilson finished runner-up after beating Clay 3-1 in their match.

McDonnell added his name to the list for the ninth time; after first winning the title way back in 1995, when he interrupt-

ed Gary Stratford’s incredible run of Celtic championship victories.

Top seed McDonnell dropped a game to Ben Kruger, but then beat Billy Nolan in straight sets to meet second seeded Kevin Milne in the final.

Milne beat Paul Cousins and Nick Marshall to get a berth in the final, and at 2-1 up in the final match-up, was looking good for a championship title after producing some stunning B-grade squash to have McDonnell on the back foot.

But whether Milne blew out, or McDonnell dug deep to find something extra, the last two games went the way of the champion in convincing fashion.

beat Brendon Adam to take the plate.

Adam Clement was top seed in the men’s B grade, and met Jimmy Hunn in the final, where his greater experience showed to get his name etched on that cup, taking out the final in three sets.

Ed Harrison took the classic plate from Harry Stanway and Pete Blacklow won the plate over Eelke Dijkstra.

Unseeded Chris Thompson was the dark horse in the C grade, and so it proved, as he upset Phil Andrew and then beat Rob Giles to make the final against top seed Nathan Forbes.

While Forbes made it through without dropping a set, unfortunately he had to default the final due to injury, robbing the gallery of a much-anticipated contest.

Rob Giles beat Jordan Hooper for third, while Ian Dolden took the plate.

In the men’s D grade top seed Shane Muckle made it to the final without too much difficulty, but on the other side of the draw the in-form Blair Horrell was lurking, and it was winter league team-mate Horrell who came out best in an entertaining final match.

The result was much closer than the 3-0 scoreline indicated.

Brendan Clark and Tim Kuipers took the minor spoils in that grade.

The women’s B grade went to seedings, with Rebecca McCloy going through without a loss, only dropping the one game to Jan Lee. Kyla Clement was a clear second behind McCloy.
