Students reeling at after-ball ruling BY MATT MARKHAM

Repertory’s first show? P15

Ashburton College students were left reeling yesterday after they were told that the after-ball function following their annual school ball on Friday night would be a ‘dry’ event. They now have until today to make a decision on whether they still wish to attend the event or forgo their tickets and receive a full refund, opening up some concerns within the community in regards to potential unsupervised parties. After meetings between the organising committee, made up of parents and the school leaders yesterday morning,

the students were told of the news at a special assembly during final period in the afternoon. One student spoken to, who the Guardian has chosen not to name, said the announcement came as a big shock and there was a lot of unhappy students following the news. “It got pretty loud in there,” they said. “They pretty much told us that it wasn’t a decision by the parents, the school or the Ashburton Police, but a decision that was made for them up in Wellington. “We aren’t very happy about it, especially because it’s been so well organised

and with so much parent supervision.” The letter that was given to students by Ashburton College, who are not directly involved with the after-ball, stated that the organising committee’s decision came following communication from the New Zealand Police who said their position was clear. They said that organised after-ball parties involving the consumption of alcohol and a charge of any sort are illegal irrespective of the age of the attendees.
