Eight HNZ houses tested for meth

Housing New Zealand has requested methamphetamine testing on eight properties in Ashburton during the past 12 months.

Three of those tests produced positive results with one further test yet to be completed.

Tenants are now living in one of those three decontaminated properties and another tenant is soon to be placed in another house, a Housing New Zealand (HNZ) spokesman said.

The third property required major decontamination and was not available for

re-letting at this stage.

In the year to June 30, 2015, HNZ requested testing on five properties in Ashburton.

One of those tests produced a positive result and the property has been decontaminated but not yet been re-let because of the scale of the remedial work involved.

HNZ owns 186 properties in the Ashburton District.

The spokesman said HNZ took the health and safety of its tenants seriously and after meth houses had been decontaminated, they were re-tested before being made available for re-letting.

HNZ has a zero tolerance to drug use and abuse in its homes because the social, health and environmental impacts of meth use were extensive.

Staff are trained to pick up signs of drug use when visiting properties.

HNZ is a member of a new committee improving standards around meth management. The new standards will provide clearer guidelines to those involved in the meth decontamination process, including contractors.

McClay to seek trade meetings

Trade Minister Todd McClay is seeking meetings about Brexit with his counterparts from the European Union and Britain at a G20 trade ministers meeting in China to which New Zealand has been invited.

He said he wanted to discuss New Zealand’s best way forward in light of Britain’s vote to leave the EU. “In the meantime, it is important for exporters to be assured that our economic relationship with the UK and Europe will remain the same for the foreseeable future.

“Even before Friday’s referendum, we had sought assurances from UK and EU officials that the rules around New Zealand access would not change until they have negotiated new ones with us,” he said.

“We have received those assurances.”

Britain has yet to give legal notice to the EU to quit under Article 50 of the 2009 Lisbon Treaty.

Once it does, it has up to two years to negotiation an exit deal, which will effectively involve its own trade deal with the EU. Mr McClay said he expected to meet with many European counterparts at the meeting in Shanghai on July 9 and 10.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom and Britain’s Minister of State for Trade and Investment will be among those at the meeting.

Mr McClay is in regular contact with Ms Malmstrom because New Zealand is in the midst of preparations to launch free trade agree-

“While it is still very early days in the joint scoping exercise, we are working towards a possible launch of negotiations during 2017 with a potential two-year negotiation,” he said.

He said New Zealand had a significant number of supporters in the EU and retained a strong relationship with Britain.

“The work we have done over the past few years will be important as we, over the coming months, discuss an orderly way forward for our trading relationship.”

Mr McClay said he had already begun talks with New Zealand exporters and would continue to engage with the sectors most affected including the meat, dairy and horticulture industries.

“It is important that they are fully informed and fully engaged in the process as it develops.”

Ashburton farms are going greener with huge numbers signing onto Wastebusters’ On Farm Recycling programme.

As of Friday morning 82 farms have joined the programme since it started this time last year.

On Farm Recycling manager Brooke Stevenson said numbers started climbing over the past few months.

“It would have been around April when it really started to take off,” she said.

“Farmers are starting to realise they’ve got to be a bit more responsible for their farm waste,” she said.

She said as well as farmers becoming more eco-minded, an increase in visibility for the programme also helped to get more farms on board.

Ms Stevenson said she was pleased with how the programme was coming along and she hoped it would keep growing.

“It’s fantastic, it’s really good, it’s cool to see a small country thing taking off,” she said.

The programme aims to provide farms with ways to recycle farming waste, including cans, polypro sacks, paper, plastics, bulk bags, silage covers and baling wrap and twine.

Wastebusters has also signed up with Rural Co NZ, meaning members can use their Rural Co cards.

Speed limit fight continues

Mid Canterbury schools will continue to fight for lower speed limits as a way of keeping their students safe.

The Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association (MCPA) has been working with the Ashburton District Council to come up with a plan to ensure the safety of students on roads outside the district’s schools.

This followed a request by the principals’ association to council to lower the speed limit to 40km/h outside all Mid Canterbury schools earlier this year.

Two weeks ago the New Zealand Transport Agency assessed speeds outside five schools in the district, the results of which will be used by council to determine the best course of action.

Council roading manager Brian Fauth said he had not received re-

sults from the NZTA assessment yet but once he had the data he would continue to search for a workable solution.

“We will try to assess the most appropriate way forward.”

He had previously said that lower speed limits outside rural schools might not make much of a difference because of the difficulty in policing them.

the issue was discussed again at the MCPA’s monthly meeting on Thursday with all principals adamant they wanted to continue to fight for a lower speed limit rather than another solution.

“We’re convinced that some form of better signage would make a difference.”

The principals felt the NZTA assessment had been a success and interestingly the consultant had data and research showing

that flashing 40km/h school zone signs outside schools around the country had helped ensure the safety of students, Ms Boyce said.

“It has made a huge difference in lowering the speed.

“We’re very interested in pursuing flashing school zone signs.”

The MCPA will now go back to council to try to get these signs installed at outside all schools in the district.

They learnt rafting, navigation,

mountain bike maintenance and gear choice in the Adventure Girls’ Day Out session.

EA Networks Centre gym supervisor Anna Johnson said most of the group were taking part in the Torpedo7 Spring Challenge Women’s Adventure Race in Sep-

tember and wanted to be a bit better prepared.

“It was awesome.”

This was the first time the centre had held an event like this but they hoped to hold more to help give people the confidence to try adventure racing, she said.

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark says the next United Nations Secretary General probably won’t be decided before October.

She is one of 11 candidates seeking the job, each of whom has held a public job interview with the UN General Assembly.

The UN Security Council takes over the process next month.

Its 15 members will conduct ballots late next month to whittle the candidates down to a shortlist.

“They will keep talking about that short list,” she said, taking part in a Facebook live chat yesterday with social media aficionado Sree Sreenivasan in the grounds of the UN in New York.

A lot of people would be on holiday in August, and September would be busy with many world leaders visiting the UN. “The general view is that it probably wouldn’t be determined before October.”

Ban Ki-moon’s second five-year term finishes on December 31.

The UN rules require the Security Council to recommend a person to the General Assembly for appointment.

Helen Clark was an early bookmaker’s favourite from among the first nine candidates but two strong contenders have since entered the contest, Miroslav Lajcak from Slovakia and Susana Malcorra from Argentina.

Helen Clark said she had been approached about putting herself forward for the vacancy in 2006 but as Prime Minister of New Zealand at the time, she had a job to do at home.

“As it happens, now I am available.”

As well as her nine years as Prime Minister, the past seven years as head of the United Nations Development Programme had given her experience in handling very difficult situations, including in Africa.

“With UNDP you have incredible exposure to the needs and interests of developing countries.

“I don’t think any other candidate would have had the contact with Africa and its issues which I have had, which is where the big concentration of poverty in our world remains.”

Ashburton pharmacists Rachel Eaton and Jane Kelly will have a new outlook come Monday.

The business pair are moving their Unichem and Life Pharmacy a few doors along East Street and are looking forward to a retail store, dispensary and consulting space almost twice the size.

They have spent the weekend moving and setting up in the new area, which runs from East Street to the Arcade and was previously occupied by Redmonds Furniture and Furnishings.

The pharmacy’s hi-tech robotic dispenser was moved last week and the whole upstairs/downstairs space given a tick of approval from the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

Mrs Eaton said the extra room would allow them to provide more pharmacy services. They are already qualified to give flu jabs and other medication, health checks and diagnostics.

She said they were committed to staying in the town’s central busi-

ness district and wanted to keep people coming back to East Street.

Shoppers will still be able to pass through the pharmacy as an alternative access to the Arcade and the new Eastfield precinct, when it is built over the next few years.

The pharmacists have been in business together for nine years; they employ two other pharmacists, an intern, three pharmacy technicians and four others in the retail and admin areas.

Mrs Eaton said retail manager Candace Kingsbury was in charge of the new layout and staff began moving stock down the street last week, using shopping trolleys kindly loaned by New World.

Customers would enjoy the new layout, she said.

Ashburton Joinery installed the new dispensary, which would allow three pharmacy teams to operate at the same time, streamlining prescriptions.

The pharmacy will also provide medication for residents of Ashburton’s newest resthome, Radius Millstream.

The 49th annual show, which was held at the Tinwald Memorial Hall on Saturday and Sunday, had 480 birds from all over the South Island on display.

Show manager Debbie Phipps said the weekend was a complete success with people coming all the way from Invercargill and Nelson for the show.

Hundreds of people from Ashburton also came along to check out the wide variety of birds including finches, canaries and parrots.

“There was really, really good attendance. A lot more people came than last year.”

Birds were judged on different features including their shape and the colour of their plume and eyes. Organisers are now gearing up for the show’s 50th celebration next year.

Long-awaited snowfall for Mt Hutt skifield

Fire brigade call-outs The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended two fires yesterday afternoon. The first was a small gorse fence fire on Boundary Road in Huntingdon at 2.41pm which only took 20 minutes to put out and the second was a small fire in the Ashburton Borough School grounds at 4.02pm.

The Mt Hutt Ski Area received its first sprinkling of snow since June 12 on Saturday night with more expected during the day yesterday.

Missing man found A 59-year-old Wellington man who went missing last Monday has been found. Richard Barber was last seen in the capital and was reported missing after family and friends lost contact with him.

Police said yesterday that he was located safe and well in Wellington on Saturday. “Police would like to thank the public for their concern and help in finding Mr Barber.”

Crashed, fled on foot A driver who sped away after failing to stop for police in Lower Hutt yesterday crashed into a power pole and fled on foot.

The driver, who sped away from police on Oxford Terrace about 12.24am yesterday was in a Nissan Pulsar. Shortly after, police came across the car which had crashed into a power pole on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Epuni St. The power pole was down and the driver and occupants had left on foot, police said.

Code club closes doors

Mid Canterbury’s first ever coding club for children is about to close its doors, but the skills will continue to be taught by some schools.

The Mid Canterbury Code Club, which was set up by Business Mid Canterbury, the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association and Code Club Aotearoa, has been running once a week at Ashburton College for students aged between eight and 12 since October last year.

Business Mid Canterbury business development manager René Artz said the club will finish next week with students having com-

pleted all course modules including Scratch, HTML and Python.

It will not be run again as one of the aims of the club was to encourage schools to start up their own, he said.

The idea was to run a full course for interested students from a mixture of schools to teach them programming skills and show schools how to go about setting up a similar club of their own.

“We had a measure of success there, especially with the students. The kids have really enjoyed it.”

Allenton and Mayfield schools have already started up code clubs through the help of Code Club Aotearoa and St Joseph’s

School plans to start next term.

Mid Canterbury Code Club technical tutor Matt Harris said the course had been a success but he hoped that more schools would have used it as a base to start up their own.

“We had a great response initially, the students themselves have all learnt a lot but it’s a little bit disappointing that more schools haven’t taken up the opportunity.”

Code Club Aotearoa can set willing schools up with volunteers who have the skills to be able to teach coding as well as offering different projects and programmes that schools can use.

Students of the Mid Canterbury Code Club have gained a variety of skills on top of coding including creativity, troubleshooting, perseverance, problem solving and collaboration.

They have also learnt that coding is a big part of their everyday life, Mr Harris said.

“That smartphone in their pocket is a powerful computer that can be programmed by them, not just by people in Silicon Valley.”

A police patrol car stolen during a traffic stop in Whangamata on Saturday night has been recovered.

The firearms the vehicle carried were not accessed. The car was taken about 11.30pm after an officer stopped a driver for speeding. A passenger of the vehicle which was stopped took the officer’s car and fled as far as Opoutere, where it was found about 3am.

New arts fund announced

Two Ashburton art organisations joined forces on Tuesday night to celebrate an anniversary and a new fund.

The Ashburton Art Gallery held a function to celebrate its first anniversary and Advance Ashburton Community Foundation announced the launch of a new charitable fund for the arts.

The night was a celebration of art in Ashburton and was a fitting place for the launch of the ‘Ashburton Arts Fund.’

The fund aims to make a significant contribution to the arts in Mid Canterbury for many years to come.

The first donation came from the Ashburton District Council, who donated $1000.

Chairman of Advance Ashburton, Trevor Croy, announced the fund and said he was delighted to be part of the initiative that “recognises the value to our community, of the people and organisations that support the arts.

“We are now ready to receive donations and we look forward to being of service to the arts community in the future.”

Truck show for worthy cause Ashburton truckies are set to celebrate spring and help a worthy cause when a lineup of big rigs roll into town.

Truck driver Rick Harkness is organising the show to raise money for Leukemia New Zealand and the Blood Centre New Zealand, in memory of his late father Andrew.

“Dad had a lot of blood transfers and those organisations are fantastic and I want to give something back,” Mr Harkness said. The show will feature new and classic truck and trailer units, along with food stalls and entertainment for the kids.

Mr Harkness has had expressions of interest from truckies as far afield as the North Island and is hoping up to 80 vehicles will show up.

The event will be held at the Ashburton A&P showground’s on September 3.

Five off-duty lifeguards have been honoured for their rescue of an unconscious woman in rough seas at Piha on Auckland’s west coast.

Jackson Smith, of the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club, in northern Auckland, led the rescue of the 19-year-old from 50m off the beach, north of Lion Rock last November.

He won the Surf Life Saving Northern Region’s rescue-of-the-year award at the organisation’s annual awards on Saturday night. The award was made jointly to Jack and co-rescuers Nick Tomkins, Simone Hollier and Leilani Fuemana, of the beach education team from Red Beach, and Duncan Clarke of the Piha club.

Motorcycle crash One motorcyclist died and another is in a critical condition after they collided with oncoming cars near Puhoi. Police believe the men were patched Black Power members travelling in convoy to a Northland tangi on Friday. The crash occurred when the two motorcycles – which were travelling on the wrong side of the road – collided with two oncoming cars near Schollum Access Rd. - NZME

Artillery shell found An artillery shell, thought to be more than 100 years old, has been found in Otago Harbour. The shell was discovered a few days ago by a worker connected to the dredging of the shipping canal, police said.

The person contacted police, who drafted in the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to assess the bomb. A controlled explosion was carried out by the NZDF yesterday, police said.

“The head of the shell is thought to be more than 100 years old, and may have been used in coastal defences,” police said.

A slice of heaven is in store for Mid Canterbury people at this year’s Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park, with a big name in the music industry confirmed as a performer.

Ashburton will be hosting Dave Dobbyn for the event on December 10, event organiser Lisa Anderson said.

The Kiwi music icon will be headlining this year’s event, along with a selection of 10 of the best entertainers from Mid Canterbury.

Dobbyn has enjoyed success as a solo artist and as a member of the bands The Dudes and DD Smash. A New Zealand national treasure, he has won more awards for songwriting than any other New Zealander.

Dobbyn has written the soundtrack to Kiwi lives, with a string of hits including Beside You, Be Mine Tonight, Outlook for Thursday, Loyal, Whaling, Kingdom Come and Welcome Home.

He will be taking a break from touring with his recent album – Harmony House – to perform at

Mrs Anderson said Dobbyn is a fan of New Zealand’s small, rural communities and has offered to perform with local talent.

Three choirs have been selected to perform on stage with him; a primary and secondary school choir plus an adult choir who will provide backing for three of his

most popular songs.

“We are so happy to have Dave here for a whole weekend and are looking forward to showing him some good old fashioned southern hospitality” she said.

“He will be travelling around the town on the Friday practising with the choirs and getting to know our town, which is a massive thing for Ashburton, and we are excited to get to know him.”

Concert promotor Carmen Lye said the format of the evening would be similar to the last three years; a family picnic atmosphere with food and coffee available at the venue, ending with the mega fireworks display at the end of the night while the Christmas story is told.

“Last year about 8500 people enjoyed the event, this year we are expecting the number to grow once again, as having Dave Dobbyn as a headline act will attract people from out of our region to enjoy what Ashburton has to offer,” she said.

The event is supported by many local businesses and individuals who donate time, money and services to keep the concert free for all to enjoy.

Overhaul for toxic classrooms

BY SUSAN STRONGMAN The Government says it will spend more than $14 million rebuilding a Manurewa primary school riddled with toxic mould and asbestos.

Clayton Park School closed four classrooms because of mould last year, and said at the time that others were damp and leaky, with fungi growing in ceilings and walls.

Yesterday, Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye said “around $14.5 million” had been approved for the decile-two Auckland primary school’s redevelopment.

“This announcement is the result of several years of work and completes an important phase in what is one of our most complex school redevelopments,” Ms Kaye said.

She said the school was a key part of the southwest Manurewa community and the next phase would be to get its input on the design process. She said construction was due to start “later this year” and the redevelopment would take about two years to complete.

Time to accept Brexit and move forward Ruby Harfield

T

he people of the United Kingdom have spoken and the majority, albeit a close one, have decided the best option for the future of the country is to leave the European Union.

This decision, however, seems to have come at a huge cost to the nation which is now completely divided.

The referendum was a democratic process and regardless of whether or not it went the way people wanted, the majority did vote to leave and now the country needs to work out how to best do that.

Instead it has caused a rift in the UK with people verbally abusing each other and calling for another referendum. The abuse can be witnessed firsthand on Facebook with those that voted to leave being referred to as racist, bigots or just plain wrong.

There would have been problems for the UK if they stayed in the EU and there will be problems now it is leaving, but the path was chosen by the 71.8 per cent of people who voted and needs to be accepted.

The results were tight with 52 per cent wanting to leave and 48 per cent wanting to stay, but fighting over the decision and calling for another referendum won’t help.

People have been saying that those who voted leave are the “unwashed” of the country and not worthy of making such a difficult decision.

But this is democracy and everyone has the right to an opinion whether or not it is the same as their mother, neighbour, colleague or friend.

Those who have said that people were wrong for choosing out and wanting another referendum are coming dangerously close to seeming like they would rather reject democracy and live in a society more along the lines of an oligarchy or dictatorship where the decisions are left to a few or just one.

What these people are essentially saying is that it’s fine to have an opinion as long as it is the same as theirs and if it’s not then you are wrong.

Was there this much opposition when a referendum was called?

Because that should have been the time for people to say that the decision shouldn’t be left to the people, not after the referendum when it hasn’t gone their way.

Being a member of the commonwealth, New Zealand will also feel the impact of Brexit, but I hope that we can be better than those who have spat the dummy in the motherland and accept the decision.

What needs to happen now is for the country to work out why so many people wanted to leave and try to find the best way forward.

Our primary industry export sector is worth around $37 billion, with export revenue expected to reach $36.7 billion in the year to June 2016.

While the dairy sector has been affected by some global volatility, this is being offset by the strong performance of other primary industries, especially horticulture, wine, kiwifruit, and beef.

The outlook for our primary sector is very positive. More wealthy consumers are demanding our high-quality produce.

Once the TPP comes into effect, it will save our primary exporters hundreds of millions of dollars in tariffs each year.

A successful primary sector is a key part of the Government’s plan to create more jobs, raise incomes, and build a more productive and competitive economy.

This is why the Government invests in areas such as biosecurity which will help protect the health of our primary sector.

ecurity has now reached a record $223 million. Over the past 12 months we have delivered 90 new frontline staff, 24 dogs and six new x-ray machines.

The Government recognises that we need skilled people to take our primary sector into the future, so we set up two primary industry training academies.

We also invested more in Budget 2016 to lift tuition subsidies at degree level for agriculture by 16 per cent.

We’re piloting a new competitive funding process to allocate up to $35 million in annual tuition subsidies for levels 3

and 4 tertiary education study in agriculture, horticulture, and viticulture qualifications.

As well as a source of national economic growth, primary industry is a livelihood for farmers in New Zealand.

Families are the heart of our rural communities, which is why this Government is committed to ensuring they get the services and support they need.

We recognised the pressure many South Island farmers have been under over a prolonged period, which is why we extended the medium-scale adverse event (drought) declaration.

We also announced an extra $600,000 to support rural communities as the second phase of the Rural Mental Wellness initiative. This builds on last year’s investment of $500,000.

The second phase of funding will go towards a number of initiatives.

This includes 10 more suicide prevention workshops in rural areas not yet covered, as well as the development of a new workshop programme focused on manag-

ing suicidal patients in a rural setting.

Another initiative is the upskilling of 0800 operators so they are better equipped to respond to distressed farmers and their families.

The extra funding will also support the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand’s 15 regional Clinical Champions and Medical Director to continue their work to strengthen linkages and support local initiatives.

It will also assist in the development of a longer-term approach to improving rural mental health outcomes.

The Government recognises that rural life goes in cycles, with ups and downs. The new funding will help to strengthen local networks for farmers, workers, and families in rural communities.

It will provide more suicide prevention workshops and employ co-ordinators to work with Rural Support Trusts.

‘Don’t rush exit’ German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sought to temper pressure from Paris, Brussels and her own government to force Britain into negotiating a quick divorce from the EU, despite warnings that hesitation will let populism take hold.

Eurosceptics in other member states have applauded Britons’ decision to leave the European Union in a referendum that sent shockwaves around the world, with far-right demands for a similar vote in Slovakia underlining the risk of a domino effect.

With the referendum decision finally made last week and Prime Minister David Cameron having announced his resignation, European politicians and institutions felt free to shower demands on Britain over its future outside the world’s largest trading bloc.

The European Central Bank said Britain’s financial industry, which employs 2.2 million people, would lose the right to serve clients in the EU unless the country signed up to its single market – anathema to “leave” campaigners who are set to lead the next government in London.

Almost alone in continental Europe, Merkel tried to slow the rush to get Britain out of the EU door. Europe’s most powerful leader made clear she would not press Cameron after he indicated Britain would not seek formal exit negotiations until October at least.

“Quite honestly, it should not take ages, that is true, but I would not fight now for a short time frame,” Merkel said.

“The negotiations must take place in a businesslike, good climate,” she said.

“Britain will remain a close partner, with which we are linked economically.”

Britain’s decision to leave the EU is the biggest blow since World War Two to the European project of forging greater unity.

But Merkel appeared more conciliatory than others within her coalition government and elsewhere in Europe.

The chief executive of Britain’s “Vote Leave” campaign called for informal talks before London notifies the EU it wants to leave under the Lisbon Treaty, which provides for two years of divorce proceedings.

But German Foreign Minister FrankWalter Steinmeier, a member of Merkel’s Social Democrat coalition partners, showed a greater sense of urgency on getting talks going.

In Britain itself, divisions widened after the relatively close vote.

Tens of thousands are also set to pack into Trafalgar Square in the British capital this week to show “London stands with Europe”, the Evening Standard newspaper reported.

Cameron announced on Friday he would resign after the referendum that sent global stock markets plunging, and inflicted the biggest one day drop on sterling in history.

He promised to stay on as a caretaker until October while the Conservative Party chooses a new leader.

Even before the British vote, anti-establishment parties were on the rise across the EU, not least in France where far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen is expected to perform strongly in a presidential election next year.

Raising mainstream fears that other member states might be tempted to follow the British example, Slovakia’s far right People’s Party on Saturday launched a petition for a referendum on the country’s future in the EU. “Citizens of Great Britain have decided to refuse the diktat from Brussels. It is high time for Slovakia to leave the sinking European ‘Titanic’ as well,” the party said.

The British pound fell as much as 10 per cent against the US dollar on Friday to levels last seen in 1985 on fears the decision could hit investment, threaten London’s role as a global financial capital, and cause months of political uncertainty.

Ratings agency Moody’s downgraded its outlook for Britain, saying its creditworthiness was now at greater risk.

The uncertainty risks damaging economies far beyond Britain’s shores, and European Central Bank policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau joined the clamour for haste.

Heritage Auctions says the top bid in the auction was $US20,000 for a pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers given to Houston by NBA great Michael Jordan. A Dolce & Gabbana fur coat worn by Houston on stage sold for more than $US16,000.

400g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Breast Fillets A dash of oil 1t minced garlic 1t minced ginger 3-4 C fresh vegetables (sliced to stir fry size) 1C plum sauce 1/4 C water Cashew nuts to garnish ■ Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan or wok. Add the garlic, ginger and vegetables, stir-frying over med/high heat for 2-3 mintues.

Set aside.

Groote Eylandt taps tourism potential

Pristine bays like this one are sure to attract tourists from all around the world.

A

spectacular, mineral-rich island perched in the pristine waters of Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria has a simmering battle on its hands.

Traditional custodians of Groote Eylandt are grappling with a formidable challenge: reaching for a future in sustainable, community-driven tourism, while continuing to reap phenomenal royalties from a thriving manganese mine.

The battle to wean off royalties, which have delivered untold wealth for more than 50 years, is laid bare by Groote Eylandt’s waters.

A steady stream of bulk carriers bobbing in and out of the harbour shift up to five tonnes of high-grade ore produced at the island’s open-cut mine every year, with production to continue until at least 2027.

The metal is a critical alloying agent in the production of aluminium, copper and steel, with the island contributing more than 15 per cent of the world’s total manganese production.

Tied up alongside the behemoth ships sits a fishing vessel adorned with indigenous motifs - one of two such boats in a locally-owned fleet.

Heavily reliant on its mining royalties, manganese rich Groote Eylandt is focusing on its other attributes, as Daniel McCulloch found out.

Johnny, a tradesman at the manganese mine, who moved to the island about 10 years ago.

Dropping the throttle and leaving the big ships in our wake, Johnny neatly captures the predicament facing Groote Eylandt – which was named by explorer Abel Tasman in 1644 and means “large island” in old Dutch.

“The fishing tours are a lifestyle job ... but the mining gig pays the bills,” Johnny says of his own situation.

“Let’s go and see Australia, and find you some silver ones,” he says, with a thick layer of zinc smeared across his face, and a grin from ear-to-ear.

These tours are a key plank of Groote Eylandt’s fairly recent foray into the tourism market.

The fishing in these waters, we’re told, is among the best in the world, and you can go three to four days without spotting another boat.

With a plethora of lures tied to our rods, we spend the day trolling through mangrove-lined rivers around Arnhem Land.

enough barramundi hooks on, and after a bit of a tussle, climbs aboard.

Other fish show lukewarm interest at random intervals during the day, though none of them are worth eating, and ultimately the gory croc yarns are much more common than prize catches.

Late in the day, the winds and tides conspire against us, and we make a choppy return to land.

We’re staying at Groote Eylandt Lodge, not far from the main town of Alyangula, which has 60 waterfront bungalows and rooms with magic archipelago views.

A consistent turnover of mining contractors and workers ensures a daily buzz around the place come dusk.

Among lush, tropical gardens alongside the swimming pool, some top-notch cocktails work their wonders to knock the green gills away, while chefs at the lodge’s Seagrass restaurant whip up our lonely fish into a hearty group meal.

Connecting AirNorth services from the mainland are fairly infrequent and many seats snaffled by the FIFO set, which threatens to push prices to a prohibitive point.

This is a shame, because the island home of the Anindilyakwa people is truly special.

A morning scenic flight with pilot Vaughan drives home its scenic beauty.

The vivid greens, reds, golds and browns of the coastline, ancient rock formations and dunes are impossible to capture with my smart phone camera. So I put the gadget away, sit back and soak in the views.

An on-land introduction to Anindilyakwa culture illuminates some of Groote Eylandt’s key tourism strengths – its rich history, traditions and connection to country.

An art centre alongside the lodge showcases an array of pieces crafted by local artists, with nearby rock caves offering a journey back in time.

Motifs of fishing, hunting, water and water creatures adorn their walls.

The journey to the caves, however, highlights another serious challenge facing the Groote Eylandt community: lack of infrastructure.

Properties in the township dominated by South32’s GEMCO mine sport manicured lawns, with a golf club, community pool and shopping hub nearby.

But in the communities outside this zone, facilities are much more stark.

Abandoned cars and electrical equipment gather rust in back lots, while local media reports highlight overcrowding in houses and efforts to eliminate scabies.

The Anindilyakwa Land Council, the peak representative body for traditional owners of the Groote archipelago, has pledged a renewed focus on investing royalties into community-based infrastructure as they work through new mining lease deals.

A cornerstone of this vision is harnessing the island’s tourism credentials.

While this plan is still in its relative infancy, it is plain to see the enormous potential Groote Eylandt has to offer travellers.

United fail to break Spirit

Mid Canterbury United’s top of the table battle against Coastal Spirit ended in a 1-1 draw at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

United’s ranks were bolstered by two new midfielders in Martais Bussey and Radu Gligor, and the latter got his chance to impress early on when Stan Pokipoki pulled up with a hamstring complaint.

Gligor made an immediate impact, playing a key role in the build-up of United’s opening goal as Adam George fired the home side ahead with 20 minutes played.

United continued to pile on the pressure, but Spirit’s backline stood firm for a 1-0 score line at the interval.

Mid Canterbury coach Martin Fitzgerald called for a more polished passing display in the second period, with United just one half away from victory over their championship rivals – but it was Spirit that got the better of the early exchanges.

United managed to force their way back into the tie after the hour mark and created plenty of chances, but failed to capitalise.

As time ebbed away, Spirit continued to come forward and were rewarded with a late equaliser.

Mid Canterbury United Masters came from behind to down FC Twenty RSA 2-1 at Christchurch’s English Park on Saturday.

Both sides failed to take their chances in a goalless first half, but FC Twenty drew first blood early in the second stanza for a 1-0 lead.

Cristiano Ronaldo helped create a rare chance and substitute Ricardo Quaresma finished it off, helping Portugal to beat Croatia 1-0 yesterday and advance to the European Championship quarter-finals. Portugal settled a poor game in the 117th minute with its only serious attack, when Ronaldo’s one shot all match was parried by goalkeeper Danijel Subasic across the goalmouth in the second half of extra time.

Quaresma stooped to head the ball into an unguarded net from close range.

Penalties help Poland Poland spent time preparing for a penalty shootout - and it showed.

The team qualified for the quarterfinals of the European Championship for the first time after it converted all its penalties to beat Switzerland 5-4 in a shootout.

Twenty had the lion’s share of possession, but United came close to levelling the score against the run of play.

A fast-paced one-touch buildup found its way to Matt Galbraith, who provided a wellweighted cross for Maikel Vallejo who put his effort just over the crossbar from close range.

The missed opportunity was

quickly forgotten, though.

Rob Breen latched on to a floating cross and headed into the top left-hand corner to level the score at 1-1.

Mid Canterbury added their second goal to seal the result 10 minutes later.

Vallejo beat his marker and played a pacey cross into the box which Paul Bradford smashed

Celts turn on afterburners

Round two of the Watters Cup saw Celtic down Methven 78-14 and Rakaia account for Hampstead 50-22, while Southern had the bye.

After convincingly dispatching Hampstead last week, Shane Enright’s greens were favourites on paper to claim their second win in as many weeks against Methven on Saturday.

A depleted Methven bench consisted of senior B and Colts players due to absence of some key senior personnel, but that did not stop Andy Pearce’s men from getting off to a flying start.

Irish prop Michael Lynch crossed the white line in the opening minute to put Methven ahead.

The lead was short-lived,

though, as Celtic heaped on the pressure for an eventual halftime lead of 30-14.

After a trying 40 minutes of keeping the home side at bay, and a lack of replacements and experience, Methven struggled to contain Celtic and conceded 11 tries in all.

Enright said the introduction of number 8 Danny Hurley, who had been rested in the first half due to illness, and halfback Ta Lisala, had a major impact, but credited Methven for a gutsy display.

“I think Methven played really well.

“They got a try in the first minute and that put us on the back foot,” he said.

“I think we made quite a few mistakes in the first half, but we made some changes in the sec-

ond half and then pulled away a bit.”

Methven coach Andy Pearce believes prolonged spells of defending burnt his players out, but was pleased with the improved performance following last week’s heavy loss to Southern.

“We defended for long periods and I think defending is three or four more times as tiring,” he said.

“We performed a lot better than last week, but Celtic are a very good side.”

Meanwhile Rakaia kicked off their defence of the Watters Cup in the afternoon’s other senior clash.

It wasn’t the best of starts for the reigning champions, who had a try disallowed for a forward pass early on, before find-

ing themselves 10-0 behind after 20 minutes.

But as good teams do, Rakaia battled their way back into the contest and two quickfire tries gave them a 24-16 lead at halftime.

Hampstead looked threatening in patches but failed to capitalise on the home side’s errors in the second stanza.

In contrast, Rakaia punished Regan Broker’s players’ mistakes and two more tries in the closing moments of the encounter pushed the score out to 50-22.

Next weekend’s Watters Cup fixtures will pit this season’s two most consistent sides against each other with Celtic hosting Rakaia, while Southern entertain Hampstead and Methven have the bye.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika insists hard work will enable his hurting players to prove themselves to the sceptics who have written off their Bledisloe Cup prospects in the wake of their series whitewash by England.

The 44-40 loss to England at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Saturday sent the Wallabies tumbling to a 3-0 series defeat.

Including last year’s World Cup final, it was a fourth straight loss for Australia, who start their Rugby Championship campaign and quest for a first Bledisloe Cup series win in 14 years, on August 20 in Sydney.

“I don’t think anyone is expecting anything to happen there for us now after this,” Cheika said.

“All we need to is to get in and work hard and prove people wrong.”

He could boost his squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship with several overseas-based stars, including backs Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Will Genia.

Cheika blooded five players in the England series, including Western Force lock Adam Coleman, who played the entire second half after Rob Simmons was forced off with a high grade AC joint injury.

“I genuinely don’t want that as an excuse for not winning because we’ve had opportunities to win the games with the new players,” Cheika said.

“Samu Kerevi and Dane Haylett-Petty have both shown themselves to be up to it.

“Rory Arnold has come in and played good footy and even Coleman tonight.

“A couple of players that we’ve liked in the background that haven’t played games that we think will play in the Rugby Championship as well, we add those to the guys we get back from injury and Europe, and our squad will grow.”

Cheika wasn’t happy with the standard of refereeing in the England series.

“It’s cost us lots of points hasn’t it, you can’t deny it,” Cheika said.

He was bemused by Welshman Nigel Owens’ ruling to play on after a kick from England inside centre and man-of-the-match Owen Farrell hit the wire of the overhead Spidercam.

The ball landed in the hands of another visiting player and England went on to score a crucial try minutes later.

First defeat for Southern

Southern B’s unbeaten run came to an end in round four of the Centennial Mug competition on Saturday.

The Michael Duff Memorial Trophy holders had swept aside all before them over both competitions before Mt Somers recorded a razor-thin 26-24 win.

Southern had a chance to snatch victory in the dying moments after being awarded a penalty, but fullback James Smith’s kick was off target, to the relief of the Collegiate support.

Across town, Celtic made it two wins in as many weeks in a 29-24 victory over Allenton.

It was another close affair for the greens, who just snuck by Mt Somers 13-12 a week earlier.

Meanwhile Methven are still in search of their first win after falling 48-21 to Collegiate, while Hampstead were convincing for a 38-17 victory against Rakaia.

The All Blacks engine would now appear to be purring, not full noise but making the sort of noises that bode well, enough to put Wales away 46-6. There’s certainly no issue with their overall skill level.

Pass, catch and run - they nailed that bit pretty well. When they opened the game up on Saturday night, which was frequently, they had that mix of menace and adventure. Some of the space they found was down to Wales falling apart.

They were a rabble by the end, dead on their feet and counting the seconds down.

Sir Clive Woodward has led the praise for the England rugby team, describing their whitewash of Australia as “one of the all-time high points”. And he says England have finally adopted a formula to beat the All Blacks by having playmakers – George Ford and Owen Farrell – at first and second five-eighths. The 2003 World Cup winner heaped praise on coach Eddie Jones, telling Daily Mail readers that “England now have the coach they deserve to drive them on.”

After a series which mostly confirmed rather than confounded selections and strategies, the All Blacks have only minor headaches to battle before firming on their Rugby Championship plans.

The biggest of those will be the make-up of their midfield and the right balance to strike in their back three.

The former remains a relatively complicated picture with the impending return of Sonny Bill Williams and Charlie Ngatai to be factored in, creating a scenario where tough decisions are going to have to be made.

There are certainties, probabilities and a couple of hard-totells when it comes to predicting what the selectors might do.

In the former camp is the value of Williams and his muscularity, creativity and experience will be utilised as soon as the selectors feel he is ready.

Williams brings a linebreaking and offloading portfolio that will give the All Blacks greater threat closer to the set-piece and ruck as well as enabling them to continue with their wide game.

For that reason, he’ll most likely be returned to the starting XV as early as the second Bledisloe Cup test in Wellington – if he’s deemed to be in good enough physical and mental shape after Rio. That doesn’t prevent Ryan Crotty from being considered one of the other certainties, as he delivered precisely what he was asked to in three tests and provides a stability and accuracy

what is a moderately troubling arm injury.

“His elbow is pretty sore, what he’s done is stretch the ligaments around the joint so he could be [out for] three or four weeks,”confirmed All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

“He certainly got our interest last night.

“Sonny is going to come back after the Olympics and Charlie has to come back and we have some other people who have done a good job for us so we will have to make some decisions.”

The most likely solution to the overcrowding is that Moala,

should he recover, will be retained and out will drop both Seta Tamanivalu and Damian McKenzie.

The ability of Beauden Barrett to cover fullback allows that scenario to play out without being unduly concerned at the lack of options in the back three.

The revival of Israel Dagg and continued excellence of Ben Smith are two of the bigger positives to come out of the series and for much of the Championship, the decision each test could simply be whether to start Julian Savea or Waisake Naholo on the left wing.

The respective contributions of the two throughout the series would lead many to see Naholo as the favourite but Savea probably still has the inside running with the selectors.

“I just want to see him enjoy himself and enjoy his rugby and get his confidence back,” said Hansen on what he wants from Savea in the next phase of Super Rugby.

“Slowly it is coming back and he is not too far away.

“He got away to an horrific start last night thanks to Izzy [Israel Dagg] getting in his way, but he bounced back and he didn’t get much come his way and he certainly didn’t get a lot of room to run.

“Once he starts scoring tries again I think we will see the smile on his face.

“I think he is in good shape to go back to Super Rugby: his weight is the best it’s been, he’s quick so physically he’s in good shape he just has to get his confidence.”

New Zealand have finished with the flourish they so desperately desired to seal fifth position at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Manchester. The 55-24 victory over Australia looks convincing enough, but they had to work hard to subdue a physical team that drove well, spread the ball, and posed serious questions in the scrums. So competitive were Australia that they actually led 2421 early in the second half. But New Zealand were irrepressible from turnover and counter-attack ball and showed their full range of passing skills and support play.

Racing take French final Racing Metro, reduced to 14 men after the early sending-off of Maxime Machenaud, have produced a remarkable performance to beat Toulon 29-21 and win the French Top 14 final for the first time in 26 years. After trailing 14-12 at the break Racing produced a magnificent display to regain control of the game and secure a famous victory in front of over 90,000 fans in Barcelona’s Nou Camp. Dan Carter slotted a late penalty to secure the win.

Irish just miss out South Africa ground out a 19-13 win over Ireland in the third and deciding rugby test yesterday, holding off a desperate Irish attack in the dying minutes to come from behind for a 2-1 series win.

Underlining how tight the contest was over the three games, Ireland was camped on the Springboks’ tryline at the very end and only a frantic tackle on Ireland wing Keith Earls by South Africa scrumhalf Faf de Klerk prevented a last-minute try and a kick at goal for Ireland to win its first ever series in South Africa. Instead, the Springboks came back from 10-3 down at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and clung on with that last-gasp defense to win two tests on the bounce after a surprise loss in the opening game.

Coach’s call under fire

By DaviD Skipwith Warriors coach Andrew McFadden has defended his decision to start wing Jonathan Wright ahead of Tui Lolohea and says there are areas of the young rookie’s game that need improvement.

McFadden make the shock change before kickoff in Saturday night’s 19-18 golden point NRL loss to Cronulla at Southern Cross Group Stadium, with Lolohea demoted to the bench to see David Fusitu’a take over the fullback role, and Wright promoted from reserve grade to start on the right wing.

Despite scoring the Warriors second try, Wright had a forgettable outing in which he also fumbled a loose ball in the lead-up to Sharks wing Ricky Leutele’s try before halftime, and dropped a pass to blow a certain four-pointer early in the second-half.

McFadden is aware his decision has left people scratching their heads but says there remain facets of Lolohea’s defensive game that require attention, while he had confidence the versatile Fusitu’a would provide more value at fullback.

“There’s been things that I’ve been seeing in Tui’s game in the last three weeks that we haven’t liked and Tui’s well aware of that,” McFadden said yesterday.

“The other reason is David Fusitu’a, in his two showings at fullback previous to this game, has done a really good job and we just felt that we probably looked a touch better particularly defensively with David at fullback and Tui hasn’t had a lot of practice on the wing.

“We know how good Tui is and it won’t be long before he’s back in the side that’s for sure but it’s a decision we felt we needed to make for the team and Tui.”

Tui Lolohea: Coach sees some defensive frailties.

Lolohea has been one of the Warriors best this season, playing wing and five-eighth before taking over the No1 jersey to cover the absence of the injured Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The 21-year-old is one of the most potent attackers in the NRL with a brilliant running and

passing game but at times in his 39 first grade appearances has lacked urgency in defensive situations close the line.

Wright last appeared in the Warriors round 11 defeat to Canberra in New Plymouth after which the side enjoyed a threematch winning run with Manu

Vatuvei, Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo all preferred wing options ahead of the 29-year-old.

McFadden is aware that Wright is perceived as having limited attacking ability but felt some of the criticism directed towards him was off the mark.

The former Eels, Bulldogs and Sharks finisher is viewed as a stable contributor, with mistakes often overshadowing his role in the side.

Rather than blame Wright for bombing a try that would have reclaimed the lead for the Warriors, he believed centre Blake Ayshford had contributed to the mistake.

“It’s a little unfair,” he said.

“I’ve heard a bit of the criticism around some of the errors he made, particularly the one where we really butchered a try, but to be fair to Jonathan, the ball was behind and high on him.

“And when you’re running flatstick trying to go for the corner, that’s the last place you want the ball delivered.

“So I put that down to Blake Ayshford more than Jonathan there but he probably had an unhappy night.

“But he does provide a really solid performance for us generally and he’s not the flashiest player but he does do a lot of good stuff for the team and the team does recognise that as well.”

The loss saw the Warriors drop to currently occupy 11th spot on the NRL ladder, and now look ahead to next Saturday’s home match against the Gold Coast.

Intrigue will surround the make-up of the Warriors outside backs when the team to face the Titans is announced tomorrow, with Vatuvei a chance of returning from a hamstring strain that has kept him sidelined over the last two weeks.

Ko’s birdie blitz matches course record By kurt voigt World No.1 Lydia Ko eagled the par-5 18th to tie the course record at nine-under-par 62 and take a share of the second-round lead yesterday in the LPGA Tour’s NW Arkansas Championship.

New Zealander Ko matched American Morgan Pressel at 14-under 128 at Pinnacle Country Club, also tying the tournament 36-hole record set by Veronica Felibert in 2012.

Pressel, winless since 2008, had a 63.

China’s Jing Yan (65), Taiwan’s Candie Kung (66) and Canada’s Alena Sharp (65) were 12 under.

Ko played the final eight holes in seven-under, making five birdies and the eagle as she matched the course record of Uehara and Jane Park and

Angela Park (both 2008).

The 19-year-old has two LPGA Tour victories this year, including the major ANA Inspiration, to push her career total to 12.

The reigning LPGA Tour Player of the Year has finished no lower than 23rd this year and had finished in the top 10 in eight of her 12 tournaments.

Pressel, meanwhile, hasn’t won since the 2008 Kapalua Classic. The major winner at the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship however, has finished second five times since her last victory – including last month in Alabama.

Ko said she was enjoying revisiting the Pinnacle Country Club, and had felt confident going into the three-round tournament.

“I’ve played a lot here in the past few years, and I got the opportu-

nity to play here as an amateur, so there’s a lot of good memories.”

Ko’s putter ran hot and she said she’d be looking to maintain that accuracy.

“At the end of the day the winner is definitely going to be holing a lot of good putts.”

Ko said the low numbers from the tournament to date showed that someone could “shoot a magical number” and come back from five or six shots down to be right in contention.

“I don’t think you can take anyone out of it.

“It’s a field with a lot of big names, so even though I’m currently leading and tied with Morgan, you just can’t take anyone out of it within that five, four-shot lead range.

“I’m just going to try and focus on what I’m going to do and give myself opportunities.” - NZME

Raiders hold off Titans Canberra have moved back inside the NRL top eight with a 30-22 victory over Gold Coast at Robina.

The Raiders picked up their fourth win from their past five matches in a game marred by a serious leg injury to Nathan Davis. Davis’s injury overshadowed a tight first half where Raiders captain Jarrod Croker continued his love affair with Gold Coast. Croker’s double helped the Raiders to an 18-10 halftime lead and means he now has seven tries in eight matches at CBUS Super Stadium.

Dynamic duo in demand Manly coach Trent Barrett remains hopeful star duo Daly CherryEvans and Jamie Lyon will play in tonight’s NRL clash with North Queensland. The pair trained with the Sea Eagles in Townsville yesterday and will have their fitness assessed before a final decision on their availability is made. Morris ‘NSW’s best’ Hat-trick hero Brett Morris has thrust himself straight into the frame for State of Origin III, says NSW great Brad Fittler. The question is whether it would be the right thing to pick veteran Morris for an Origin match when the series is already lost and he’s only just returned from a knee injury that forced him to miss the first 15 NRL rounds. “There’s no doubt in three weeks he is our best winger,” Fittler said. “But I would have a conversation with him to see where he is at.”

Tyler eyes cup double Kelvin Tyler collected both the Amberley Cup and the Winter Cup with Timy Tyler last year and he’s on target to defend the stable’s titles.

The Riverton trainer has the progressive Lochan Ora in outstanding form with the fouryear-old having suffered just one defeat in seven starts on his current campaign.

The four-year-old completed a hat-trick on Saturday with a resounding win in the Greenwood Amberley Cup at Riccarton ahead of the Gr.3 eStar Winter Cup, for which Timy Tyler is also nominated, on August 6.

“I’m getting excited about this horse, he just keeps stepping up,” Tyler said.

“He’s really grown another leg in the last two or three months – maturity has done wonders for him and he’s getting better and better.”

Lochan Ora settled behind the pace and one off the fence before regular rider Kevin Kalychurun’s move across the top had Tyler a touch nervous.

Lochan Ora was widest into the straight and the Towkay gelding held a strong gallop to win for the sixth time in his 16-start career.

“Terri’s done a great job with her and she’s a classy little filly,” she said.

Wize Act trailed in third spot to the turn before she came through on the inner to take control and comfortably repelled the challenge of the debutante Little Miss to score by a length and a half.

“I was just nursing her at the finish – it’s pretty tough going out there and she’s going to improve again with the run,” Wynne said.

T-birds too good for the Tactix Adelaide Thunderbirds gave two retiring stalwarts a stylish home farewell with a three-goal victory against Mainland Tactix in the trans-Tasman netball championship yesterday.

Adelaide prevailed 58-55 in a hard-fought encounter to give Emily Beaton and Carla Borrego a win in their last home match after the pair announced their retirements midweek.

Borrego, who cited a knee injury as the reason for her retirement, was left on the bench against the Tactix and won’t play in Adelaide’s last match of the year, an away fixture in New Zealand next weekend.

Beaton, who will play next weekend, played 21 minutes against the Tactix as the Thunderbirds logged just their second win of the season.

Adelaide were propelled to victory by influential shooters Kristina Brice and captain Erin Bell – both scored 29 goals from 34 attempts.

“It meant a lot. We have had such a hard season and things just haven’t been going our way,” Bell said.

“To finish our last home game here, and Carla’s last game for the club, we really did have a lot to play for ... it was great to get that win.”

The shooting accuracy of Bell and Brice was telling against a Tactix side which was overly reliant on star goalshooter Mwai Kumwenda, who converted 33 of her 36 attempts.

In contrast, Tactix goal attack Bailey Mes struggled with 22 goals from 31 shots.

The Thunderbirds finish their season against Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic next Sunday in Hamilton, while the Tactix, also just winners twice this season, meet the Northern Mystics in Auckland next Saturday.

Smith best halfback, ever My man of the series between the All Blacks and Wales was Beauden Barrett, without a doubt.

He grabbed his unexpected chance with every limb, to a degree you can now strongly argue he is the best test first five-eighths option.

Aaron Cruden isn’t putting attacking performances on the board to match what Barrett did against Wales.

Barrett’s fast feet are lethal and he surely deserves to be freed from his super-sub constraints.

In that regard, the Welsh series may prove to be a crucial turning point in the building of the next World Cup team.

The Welsh wing Liam Williams was so impressive in all regards in a team which was completely overpowered that he might be my runner-up.

It is difficult for any player to shine when their side is getting hammered, and wings are often at the mercy of what is going on around them.

Williams was excellent, and turned his talents to defensive brilliance in Dunedin.

But the eye was drawn somewhere else watching a replay of the third test.

Hand on heart, Aaron Smith might be the best halfback I’ve seen, from any country.

Yes, it’s a pointless exercise judging players from different ages, and sometimes even those from the same age.

But Smith deserves recognition, as already belonging in the pantheon.

There have been many great halfbacks, but Edwards was something else by every account.

His timing and burst of energy to finish THAT try for the Barbarians against the All Blacks at Cardiff Arms Park in 1973 said it all.

Watching replays still sends shivers down the spine.

There is another iconic image of Edwards, from the triumphant Lions tour of New Zealand in 1971, when the timing and power of a fend on Bob Burgess seems to lift the first five-eighths off the ground.

From a New Zealand perspective, no halfback has had an aura to match that of Sid Going.

Super Sid was by no means immaculate, but when at his best, his teams could indulge in nine man rugby and due to his passing frailties, often did.

Dave Loveridge was immaculate.

There have been many other fine halfbacks, from South Africa and Australia in particular.

But none like Aaron Smith.

The speed of his passes and relentless accuracy of everything he does is

so metronome-like that you get to a point of taking it for granted.

Smith is a machine with flair and to use a wholly appropriate sports cliche, has re-defined the standards of a position.

His kicking and passing is based on pure techniques which never falter, from a perfect anchoring of the feet to the sweeping follow through from his passes and the head remaining aimed at the point of contact after punts.

Throw in those darting runs, the linking, picking out opportunities with off-the-cuff long passes, the energy and enthusiasm ... he’s the best we’ve ever had by a long chalk.

It means the All Blacks’ first receivers are at a huge advantage, and Smith’s prowess will also provide vital space as Steve Hansen and friends build a new backline, a job that is not going entirely to plan.

When the Chiefs’ Tawera KerrBarlow emerged, it looked as though the All Blacks had uncovered an outstanding attacking halfback.

For one reason or another, he hasn’t quite kicked on.

The main reason he won’t kick on is Aaron Smith – no one is close to challenging for his jersey.

The little halfback does have an annoying trait, the over clapping and celebrating of battles within the battle, like big scrum wins.

Mr Clappy must drive the opposition quietly mad but when it comes to dealing with Smith, psychological warfare is the least of their problems.

There has been a lot written about him, and his excellence is hardly a secret.

Black Sticks disappoint New Zealand have missed a chance to play for a medal after a disappointing 1-1 with the United States in their final round robin match at the Champions Trophy in London yesterday. The women’s Black Sticks needed to win to go into the playoff for bronze against Australia. Despite dominating patches of the game, and getting 23 shots on the US goal compared to the Americans’ 11, they weren’t able to convert their chances to goals. World No 4 New Zealand will now play off for fifth and six against Britain.

Second duathlon attracts top turnout Logan Currie was the quickest of the short course participants, while Jake Marryatt took top honours over the long course in race two of the NBS Ashburton Duathlon Series yesterday.

Currie (31.24secs) was followed but the teams of Mark Kennedy and Dru de Lautour (33.19secs) and Natasha Waddell and Isabella Roulston (33.36secs) in third.

Meanwhile, Marryatt (55.04secs) was more than fourand-a-half minutes quicker than second placed Sam Letham (59.43secs), while Mark Sissons (01.03.18secs) rounded out the

top three in the long course.

Event organiser Carol Moore said it was a pleasing turnout and the race was enjoyed by all.

Race three of the series will take place on Sunday, July 24.

Michael Venus has hit a career high and this week will walk out on court at Wimbledon as a seeded doubles player, the first time that has happened for a New Zealander since Brett Steven in 1988. BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Anthony Joshua’s predictable first title defence victory has kept him on course for a showdown with Kiwi Joseph Parker, and, following Tyson Fury’s ankle injury, that could come sooner rather than later.

Joshua extended his professional record to 17 knockout victories from 17 fights after his seventh-round stoppage of a game but limited American Dominic Breazeale, a former football quarterback.

The powerful Englishman won every round against Breazeale at London’s O2 Arena, and told the large crowd and international television audience that he was first looking forward to a break and then a possible fight with Parker, the mandatory challenger to his IBF title.

The time-frame for Parker’s challenge was initially between November 20 and January 20, but a possible unification fight against current WBA and WBO holder Fury would have potentially delayed that.

However, now that Fury’s re-match against Wladimir Kiltschko has been postponed due to his recent ankle injury, it appears that blockbuster fight between the two compatriots is off the table for the moment.

“I was initially looking at Fury, but his ankle has postponed things, so now I will look at other opponents, like Parker,” Joshua said in the ring.

He added: “I’m ready to face all of them.”
