Wanted: Male preschool teachers

Lobbying organisations want the number of male early childhood teachers to increase and Ashburton’s two male preschool teachers are on board with that message.

Childforum and the Men in Early Childhood Network NZ (EC Menz) want the Government to help boost the number of males in early childhood teaching roles from 2 per cent of the workforce to 5 per cent by 2022.

New Zealand is at the bottom of the world in terms of its early childhood teaching gender diversity, and the organisations are pushing for policies and strategies to be implemented to change this.

Vincent Brierly at the Ashburton Baptist Preschool and Simon Christensen at Childs Play Preschool are understood to be the only males teaching at early childhood centres in Ashburton.

“There’s a big need for more gender equality (in the industry) and that need is important to be known,” Brierly said.

“It adds to the ability to collaborate and contribute more to the children overall.”

He said that his experience of being a male preschool teacher had been a positive one and that any bias he felt against male early childhood teachers had mostly been his subconscious speaking.

PM visiting Ashburton

Ashburton will be the focus of national media attention tomorrow when Prime Minister Bill English visits.

The National Party leader will be hosted by his party’s candidate for Rangitata, Andrew Falloon, and will tour Carrfields and a number of other Ashburton businesses following a visit to Timaru.

Falloon said one of the things English would be sure to hear about while he was here was the challenge Mid Canterbury was having in attracting skilled and semi-skilled staff.

The New Zealand economy was thriving under his leadership, and producing 11,500 additional jobs each month.

Falloon said English was widely regarded as having been one of best finance ministers in the world in the past 20 years.

Bill English “He’s made a fantastic start as Prime Minister, proving himself to be a stable and sensible leader, in contrast with the chaos that seems to accompany the opposition Labour and Green coalition,” Falloon said.

“I worked with him a lot when he was finance minister, so I’m really pleased he’s making some time in his busy schedule to spend a day down here in my home patch.”

Vincent said being male or female did not necessarily make people any more or less capable within early childhood education.

Christensen joined Vincent as the second male preschool teacher in Ashburton after his daughter and her sister attended Ashburton Baptist Preschool. Christensen said he saw the work Vincent was doing and wanted to join the fun.

“I thought ‘wow, I could do that’,” he said.

“And so far it’s been rewarding, and fun, and active.”

He said he hadn’t felt any bias ei-

ther, and felt like more men in the early childhood education workforce would be beneficial in many ways.

“Most families have a mother and a father, but those without fathers could have a role model (preschool teacher) to look up on, to do active things with like rugby,” For him, he said the job created good work stories.

“When I’m at the pub and my friends ask what I did at work today, I get to tell them I played with playdough.”

Brierly and Christensen both said they encouraged any men interested in early childhood teaching to come forward and chat to people like themselves, and learn that there is “nothing to be afraid of”.

Here it comes again A cold southerly front moves across the South Island today, bringing heavy rain across eastern regions, with snow down to 300 or 400 metres.

That puts Methven, at 300 metres above sea level, in the firing line.

The MetService is forecasting 20 to 40 millimetres of rain today, especially in Canterbury, but there is a possibility rainfall amounts may exceed 50 millimetres in a few places.

Yesterday the MetService issued a weather watch, which could be upgraded to a weather

warning, for the possibility that rainfall accumulations may exceed 50 millimetres in Canterbury from mid-morning until early tomorrow morning.

And while significant snowfalls are expected above 500 metres, affecting higher roads and livestock, the watch is for the possibility that snow accumulations may reach warning criteria above 400 metres in inland Canterbury sometime from this afternoon to tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, at Mt Hutt the skifield already has so much snow

it is clearing some from around the base lodge and dumping it over the edge of the carpark.

It also gave truckloads away for a rail jam in Christchurch last night.

“It seems a bit of a waste but you can just end up having too much,” said manager James McKenzie.

He was expecting the over two-metre base would get another approximate 30 centimetres from the predicted storm, and it would help improve offtrail conditions as it was likely to be dry powder.

Scammers selling non-existent goods online People are losing thousands of dollars when they fall victim to Facebook scammers selling non-existent goods online.

Police are seeing more people offering to sell items on Facebook without ever intending to supply the goods.

The sellers use an alias, either a false name or an unregistered company, to advertise the goods.

Often sellers communicate only through Facebook with the buyer, who will then deposit cash or funds into an account without actually speaking to, or confirming the identity of, the person they are giving the money to.

“Using sites that are not reputable to purchase goods can be risky, especially if you don’t first

verify the seller’s identity,” said Senior Constable Darryn Buist.

“We recommend buying off reputable businesses such as Trade Me as they offer a greater level of protection.

“If you suspect a seller may not be legitimate, do not complete the purchase and report the matter to your local police station.”

Boil water notice not getting to all

When a precautionary boil water notice went out to Methven on Friday night, the Ashburton District Council launched into action and directly phoned more than 50 premises.

However, some were not notified and want the council to be even more thorough next time.

The action from the council is in stark contrast to last month when it came under fire for not notifying the town’s resthome and food outlets.

This time round, staff directly rang 57 Methven businesses, listed on the council’s health licences database, including four health-care facilities and providers, 26 accommodation establishments, 16 hospitality and food outlets, 11 clubs, conference centres and other businesses.

“Three food establishments were not notified as they were not open and there was no call answering service. Many businesses had already seen the precautionary boil water notice on Facebook, or friends had contacted them about it,” a council spokesperson said.

Staff also called businesses in Mt Somers as a notice was also issued for the village.

Buying in water is a necessity for Methven premises, including Crossroads Bar and Restaurant, represented by Paul O’Connell.

Crossroads Bar and Restaurant general manager Pip Dixon said she initially heard about the notice from customers on Friday night who were at the bar on Facebook

using their smart phones.

There were at least 50 people in the restaurant at the time, and the precautionary notice meant action had to be taken immediately,

including stopping using the post mix gun, using bottled water for the espresso machine, replacing all the water on tables, washing salads in boiled or bottled water, and informing guests in the attached accommodation premises.

She was not aware of the council later phoning, however the council said it definitely had phoned, and a fellow Crossroads manager confirmed the call may have been taken by a staff member later in the evening once management already knew about the notice.

Another manager of a busy food premises which operates in daytime hours said they had not been phoned, and she believed this was “poor” of the council. She and fellow managers were not active internet users and were just fortunate a staff member had seen the notice on Facebook. Another food outlet manager operating in daytime hours had found out the same way, but was not too worried as she did not think the water had been contaminated.

Methven House manager Elisabeth Heybrook said yesterday she was pleased this time round that the council had contacted the resthome.

“I think they are learning fast,” Heybrook said.

Precautionary notices remain Ashburton District Council is advising that all precautionary boil water notices issued on July 21 for Methven, Methven-Springfield, Montalto, and Mt Somers water schemes remain in place until further notice.

All schemes have been closely monitored with repeated daily testing for issues around contamination and water quality. No contamination has been detected in any of the supplies.

event at the weekend.

Assets manager Andrew Guthrie said the water treatment plants were working correctly, however the turbidity, otherwise described as cloudiness, of the source water from all schemes was still too high.

“This high turbidity makes the treatment equipment less effective. We will continue monitoring the source water, and in the meantime, residents should continue boiling their water,” Guthrie said.

The council would continue sending out daily updates for the

remainder of the time the precautionary notices were in place.

Communities on these water schemes were advised to boil their water for three minutes before any consumption, including for food preparation, and for hygiene use such as brushing teeth.

Medical advice should be sought if any symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, cramps, vomiting or fever appear after consuming any water.

New ECan environment rules will hurt farmers By linda Clarke

Pain caused by planned new environmental rules is inevitable for Mid Canterbury farmers, members of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee were told on Tuesday.

Committee members were getting their head around Plan Change 5, which sets out nitrogen loss limits and good management practices for farmers.

Environment Canterbury principle planning advisor Olivia Cook said Plan Change 5 to the Land and Water Regional Plan was in response to community feedback that water quality was degrading and something had to be done to halt it.

The rules are not yet operative because of appeals by seven farming industry groups.

Ashburton District councillor Stuart Wilson said the change could have drastic effects on the

economy of the district.

Dairy farmers have already said it will reduce the number of cows they farm, which will have economic spinoffs in urban areas.

Cook said decision-makers had taken the economic impact into account but the reality was that drastic reductions in nitrogen

leaching were needed and there would be pain, now or in the years to come.

Plan Change 5 was about farming with good management practices (GMP) and setting minimum levels for nitrogen loss, she said.

But those measures may still not be enough to achieve water quality

outcomes in some areas.

In Mid Canterbury Plan Change 5, if made operative, will apply to the area north of the Ashburton River. The area south of the Ashburton is already under specific nutrient management provisions that are part of Plan Change 2.

Canterbury Land and Water Re-

gional Plan rules already require farmers to apply for a resource consent if their nitrogen losses are greater than 20kg/ha/year.

Cook said Plan Change 5 provided the framework to move to good management practices, which include irrigation and fertiliser use. It is aimed at farms bigger than 10ha.

Farming within an irrigation scheme is permitted if scheme has a resource consent with a nitrogen loss limit. In Mid Canterbury, about 400 farmers fall into this category and they are being contacted

by ECan to make sure they know about the changes.

Under Plan Change 5, nitrogen limits that reflect good management practices will come into play on July 1, 2020. But farmers are being asked to register their farming details on a council portal by January 1 next year (for those in an orange zone) or July 1 next year (red zone).

Seven appeals against ECan plan

Seven appeals against Environment Canterbury’s Plan Change 5 were lodged in the High Court in Christchurch.

Appeals against the plan change, which relates to the Land and Water Regional Plan and has been prepared to manage the loss of nutrients from farming activities, closed last Friday after being notified on June 24. They could only be made on points of law.

Those who appealed were Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation, Rangitata Diversion Race Management, Irrigation New Zealand, Dairy Holdings, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers and Ravensdown.

Irrigation New Zealand’s challenge related to the interpretation of what good irrigation management practice means regarding the amount and timing of water application under the plan change.

Andrew Curtis said the plan change interpreted that to mean there should be no leaching or run-off from each irrigation application.

“In technical terms we refer to this as 100 per cent application efficiency,” Curtis said, adding that it was “inconsistent with the accepted industry interpretation of good management practice,

which is that there is 80 per cent application efficiency of water used for irrigation”.

“The 80 per cent efficiency requirement has been adopted by ECan in the operative Land and Water Regional Plan, so the new changes are not consistent with existing rules and are confusing for farmers.”

Curtis said that trying to achieve compliance with the new rules could require farmers to invest in expensive new irrigation equipment, which may be unaffordable and, even if newer equipment was installed, the targets would still be unachievable for many farms.

“There are very few businesses who can say they are 100 per cent efficient, 100 per cent of the time, and farms are no different.

“It’s very disheartening for farmers who have invested in more modern irrigation equipment and training with the goal of meeting the 80 per cent efficiency requirements of the recently

adopted Land and Water Regional Plan to find they are operating in an environment where regulations are continually changing and unrealistic targets are set that they can’t hope to achieve,” he said.

The Barrhill Chertsey, Dairy Holdings and Rangitata Diversion Race Management appeals all pointed out that the plan change failed to make ongoing provision for irrigation schemes that hold existing resource consents, while the DairyNZ’s appeal noted that ECan “failed to have adequate regard to the provisions of the Canterbury Regional Policy Statement 2013, which seeks to enable people and communities to provide for their social and economic wellbeing by enabling rural activities, including primary production”.

Federated Farmers focused part of its appeal against the farm portal on the ECan website, which the council describes as a web-based

tool for estimating nitrogen losses from farming activities operated at good management practice.

However, the federation said that there were circumstances where the portal was unable to generate a baseline good management practice loss rate, a good management practice loss rate, or that it produced a loss rate that could be shown to be wrong.

Ravensdown also focused on the portal, in particular what it described as technical flaws in the plan’s fertiliser modelling proxy.

Andrew Parrish, ECan regional planning manager, said each appeal would be considered on its merits and a process would be followed to resolve them.

“If there are aspects of the Nutrient Management and Waitaki Plan Change that may not align with good management practice, we will work with our partners and stakeholders to make sure that is the case.”

Quality act from Methven theatre If a bit of quality and slightly risqué humour is your usual dose for the wintry blues then the Methven Theatre Company’s latest double production of Bonking James Bond and Snip are exactly what the doctor ordered.

Best known for its big, expansive stage productions the 2017 edition from the Theatre Company is somewhat of a step back into the realms of relaxed and simple – yet done effectively, both plays are done so well.

Scott Campbell, who was given the task of director has his eight-strong group of projects polished to near perfection for their individual roles and while there are always standouts in any performance, it’s the quality of professional delivery and performance from each that makes these two plays even more impressive.

Campbell and his production manager, Patrice Hammond along with an extremely talented and experienced production crew have everything from lighting and sound through to set design well planned and well executed.

The night starts with Bonking James Bond – a play in which Betty (Linda Young) has discovered her husband Jeffery (Ian Morrison) is having an affair with Penelope (Gemma Bell) and she sets off an attempt to save her marriage, fabricating her own affair with James Bond (John Peneycad).

Young’s performance is one of the absolute professional and her handling of a huge amount of dialogue and her constant presence on stage only adds further credence to her efforts.

Morrison, who is in his first stage performance for 11 years is all class, and his awkward character gives him perfect foil to play right up to the role of the bumbling, comedic unfaithful husband. Peneycad is another new face to the Methven Theatre Company scene and his portrayal of 007 is as slick and sophisticated as one would

hope for and expect.

Bell’s performance as the sultry and demanding mistress is faultless and her natural stage presence exudes confidence and underlines her experience on the stage.

While it jumps about from real life to reality, the play is easy to follow and the storyline does leave you wondering throughout.

What it does is play the role of the perfect precursor to the second play of the night, Snip.

Because if Bonking James Bond is good, then Snip is sensational.

The humour levels are through the roof for this tale of an unwanted vasectomy for Frank (Liam Woods) through pressure from his wife Jenny (Brooke Sandys).

There’s a somewhat unexpected appearance from The Godfather’s Don Vito Corleone (Dayle Stoliker) who guides Frank through the journey to going under the knife with a brilliant injection of sidesplitting humour from crazy doctor Sam (Tammy Dickson).

Woods is the star of the night. His performance is outstanding in a role that could be very easy to overplay, but he gives it just the right amount of everything which along with Sandys’ calming nature, and experience, on stage makes for the perfect combination.

Stoliker shines in his role as an Italian mobster with crisp and clear delivery and a perfect understatement of the subtle humour that comes with the role and Dickson’s hilarious performance will leave the audience wiping away the tears of laughter as they make their way home.

With an R16 rating, it’s not a night you can take the kids to – but it’s a night you definitely don’t want to miss.

Bonking James Bond And Snip runs through until Saturday night at the Methven Heritage Centre.

A planting project on Bowyers Stream and a trapping project at Staveley were given a combined total of $9394 by the Ashburton Water Zone committee this week.

The two projects are being funded by a $100,000 biodiversity purse for the Ashburton District and are among at least 50 sites between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers to receive financial assistance. The Immediate Steps Fund is aimed at preserving the few remnants of native bush on the plans as well as encouraging biodiversity on working farms.

The Green Acres Bowyers Stream planting was given $6630 to help plant and fence a strip of Bowyers Stream.

Biodiversity officer Donna Field said planting already carried out in the area could have been swept away by floodwaters in the stream recently but it was important the project be supported.

It was on a high profile piece of land

near the Mt Somers Walkway and involved riparian planting that would create a better habitat for invertebrates, birds and fish.

The Staveley trapping project involved $2764 to help buy traps to create a predator-free haven for birds on a piece of bush that had been fenced off from deer 12 years ago and allowed to regenerate.

The family that owns the land plan to set up more than 100 traps to catch rats, possums, wild cats and stoats to allow the bird life to flourish.

Field also got permission from the zone committee to hire a summer student to survey the Ashburton River, looking for natural springs and other spots of ecological interest.

The Immediate Steps Fund had concentrated on foothills and coastal projects, but it was time to include spots on the Ashburton River, she said. A perfect outcome would be to create a mini Groynes, where people could learn about biodiversity through walks and activities like fishing.

Firewood in short supply in Mid Canty

Fireplaces around Ashburton are staying cold this winter due to a dwindling supply of firewood.

Almost all firewood sellers around the region have reported being low on stock or completely sold out for the season. They are blaming high demand for the shortage.

John Wilson of J & K Firewood said it was rare to be left with “basically nothing” this early in the year.

Though he normally has firewood all winter, this firewood season had kicked off earlier than usual.

“People started buying firewood about April, May,” he said, “Now you have to go further afield to get anything.”

RK Firewood had also sold out, and director Rini Koopmans said a smaller number of sellers had put pressure on bigger companies.

“I had the same supply as last year, but the demand was more.”

People are used to getting their own stuff or buying off smaller sell-

ers, but all the little guys have given up.”

He assured that his company is already taking measures to ensure a more plentiful supply for next year.

In the meantime, people are “doing what they can” to get by without wood.

“They’re buying coal or Warehouse bags of kindling – or turning to electrical heating,” Koopmans said.

He said the secret to plentiful supply is to stock up on good, dry wood earlier in summer. Many companies in the region sell all year round.

“There seems to be an increase in demand every 3-to-4 years, it’s cyclical,” he said.

It is understood the shortage extends right across Canterbury, including sellers in Christchurch.

Current forecasts point towards a need for heating towards the end of this week, with temperatures expected to plummet back under zero.

Mayfield preschoolers learn how to garden

Children at Mayfield Playcentre tested their green fingers yesterday when Bunnings representatives dropped by and directed a lesson on seedling planting.

The young botanists will be growing their seedlings and selling them at the Homegrown Garden Tour on November 4.

The biennial event is held to fundraise for the Mayfield Playcentre.

Children spent the morning industriously weeding, blending compost with the soil, planting, watering and sprinkling worm juice on to the seedlings, which they had collected from the playcentre’s worm farm.

The Homegrown Garden Tour will give locals the opportunity to see four Mayfield gardens, each carefully prepped for spring and each slightly different in style.

A fete will also be set up, with stalls selling items including the seedlings.

Rebecca Taylor, who works at the playcentre, said they were looking forward to the day.

“It’s a really nice community event,” she said.

Event information and ticketing details will be announced on the playcentre’s Facebook page closer to November.

Online exams to be trialled Fifteen subjects will now be available to do trial exams online as NZQA continues with its plan to have all exams online by 2020 .

While the trials don’t count towards a student’s NCEA result, it provided good practice for schools and students as it nears the introduction of all exams being done digitally in three years’ time.

The trials are available over a five-week period, broken up into two blocks.

The first will be open from September 11-29 and again from October 16-27.

The pilot is a digital version of an exam a student would sit instead of the equivalent NCEA paper examination.

The only Level 1 pilot exams available this year are for Classical Studies, English and Media Studies.

Level 2 pilots have been offered to schools who participated in the Level 1 Pilots in 2016, with the same examinations.

Double fatal shooting Two women and a man had gone to a home to carry out a property inspection when they were shot, police have revealed.

Northland District Commander Superintendent Russell Le Prou has addressed media after the incident at a rural address on Mt Tiger Road about 10km from Whangarei.

They were called to the incident about 10.50am yesterday and found the women – who are believed to be related – shot dead.

The male property inspector has also been shot but was in a stable condition in Whangarei Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police tried to negotiate with the alleged shooter – who they said was known to them – during the afternoon but got no response.

They used tear gas and the shooter fired several shots at staff, Le Prou said.

Police fired a number of shots in return and the house caught fire soon after, becoming “fully engulfed”.

Le Prou said police believed the man is still at the house and it was “very unlikely” that he has survived.

“While police and the fire service are at the property, they will not enter the house until it is safe to do so.”

The bodies of the women are yet to be recovered, while there are residents still trapped inside the cordon, Le Prou said.

He said the incident was not gang related.

The Independent Police Complaints Authority has been notified.

Neighbour Michael Jordan said he didn’t know the man who lived in the home that well, but said the man had been living there for several years.

“We still have a number of enquiries to

make to begin to understand the tragedy that has unfolded today,” Le Prou said.

“Police will do everything we can to support the victim’s families.

“Our community will be understandably shocked by today’s events but Northland is a tight-knit community and will stand together to support one another.”

Earlier, NZME reported that after a cordon was set up, a man in a red Suzuki with a bullet hole through the windscreen drove towards it. He got out and was taken by police to the back of a waiting ambulance.

Metiria Turei to pay back what she owes Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei will meet with Work and Income’s investigative unit next week to calculate how much money she will pay back.

“I have been contacted and we are in the process of arranging a meeting for me to go and speak with them some time next week.

“That will be the first proper conversation and they will talk to me about what it is that they need. It may go on for some time, in terms of more appointments.”

Turei said she didn’t have a rough idea of how much she could owe.

She had not taken legal advice before or after her admission, and had not considered how any possible investigation or charges would affect her Parliamentary career.

“Whatever the overpayment is, I’ve committed to paying it.”

Labour leader Andrew Little would not rule out a Cabinet place for Turei if the two parties formed the next Government, but said he did not condone breaking the law.

Asked if it was helpful to have the focus on Turei so close to an election, Little said voters still cared about the same issues, including housing affordability, health and education.

“All sorts of MPs do all sorts of weird things. In the end, we are all separate parties, we have our own campaigns.”

In her speech at the Green Party’s annual conference earlier this month Turei

Metiria Turei revealed that while at law school as a solo mother she deliberately didn’t tell Work and Income how many flatmates were living with her because her benefit would be cut.

That situation occurred in three different flats, she said, and came after she realised she wouldn’t otherwise have enough money to “live, study and keep my baby well”.

On Tuesday Turei said her admission had opened up a necessary conversation, and she had since heard from people in a similar position, or from people who knew others who had acted in a similar way out of desperation.

Although she wasn’t provided with details, Turei said she would never abuse the

trust of those who disclosed information to her. “I will never condemn a beneficiary for working as hard as they can to put food on the table and a roof over their head.”

Prime Minister Bill English yesterday said it was wrong for Turei or any other politician to “essentially advocate breaking the law”.

“I disagree with politicians essentially advocating breaking the law,” English told reporters at Parliament yesterday.

“If you come into Parliament you have the opportunity to change the law, to actually make sure you can change it you need to be in a Government.

“Of course people make mistakes – they inadvertently break the law, they do it under pressure,” he said.

“It is the job of the police and then the justice system to take account of those circumstances, because life is a bit messy, it’s not always black and white.

“But Ms Turei just seems to be getting a bit disconnected from the normal assumptions we make that people should keep the law and if they don’t like the law they set out to change it.”

In an interview with RNZ National yesterday, Turei talked about her circumstances when she claimed the benefit, including the fact she hadn’t had a part-time job but stood for Parliament while studying for her law degree in 1993 for McGillicuddy Serious Party and for the Aotearoa Cannabis Party in 1996.

Daughter forgives father’s killers The daughter of the late Chris Crean says she forgives his killers after a TVNZ film on the murder screened over the weekend.

TVNZ’s Resolve chronicled the story of the 27-year-old father who agreed to testify against three Black Power members who attacked Mongrel Mob members outside his home in New Plymouth.

Stephanie Crean was 2-years-old the night her father died, in March 1996. His killers initially backed away when he answered the door holding Stephanie, but were ordered to return to the house and kill him.

He was shot through his front door and died in hospital.

Posting on Facebook, Stephanie Crean shared a poster of Resolve and wrote that she forgave the men who shot her father.

“To all four men and the Black Power gang that were involved in the murder of my father Christopher Crean, my name is Stephanie Crean and I forgive you for murdering my father.

“For many years I have not spoken to the media about how I feel about this heartbreaking tragedy. I forgive you, not because what you did in murdering my father was right, because that was not right.

“I forgive you even though there was mention of shooting me only at the age of two. I forgive you so that you may have peace and I too. So that our families may have peace, and so that the community may have peace also. So that the nation may have peace, because that is what is right.

“I believe that with justice comes peace. Whether or not you are changed men, I forgive you.”

Crean’s family last week told Maori Television they were unhappy with the TVNZ film.

“To us, the film is like reliving his whole funeral,” his brother Robert said.

Where’s the justice in it all?

I

’m officially a frustrated citizen of the Ashburton District.

Frustrated with the current state of our justice system, especially in relation to youth offenders and frustrated for our local police who are hamstrung by rules and regulations that actually seem to stop them from doing their job efficiently.

Having been the victim of a slice of grand theft auto over the weekend I’ve discovered the inner workings of just how restricted things have become.

My vehicle was uplifted from a public carpark via a smashed window and taken for a joyride around the district before being turfed when it ran out of fuel.

Other than the broken window, a little bit of water damage and a couple of personal items of value taken there was no damage.

This was purely an enjoyment theft. Just for the sake of it.

Luckily the car was picked up from its final resting place by Kieran Breakwell of KB Panel and Paint, who stumbled across it on his way to work and moved it to his yard to ensure the safety of those using the road it was parked in the middle of.

Police investigations began and I was pleased when they rang yesterday to advise that they knew who the culprit was.

But the shock and frustration kicked in when I was told that they didn’t think there was going to be too much they could do about it.

They knew the person, quite well might I add. And also had somewhat of an admission of guilt from one of the party who he took for the joyride.

But as a co-offender this person would not be able to give evidence against their mate. And so, the chances of an outcome rested firmly on an admission of guilt by the initial perpetrator.

And there wasn’t much chance of that.

So, they knew who had stolen my car – but also knew they were unlikely to get a favourable outcome for me from having that knowledge.

How is that fair?

I’m not disappointed with our local police, they have been great.

But where’s the justice in it all?

Working with a mental health condition W

orld Health Organisation (WHO) statistics show that one in four people will experience a mental health condition at some stage in their lives.

New Zealanders have selfidentified that one in six of us already have.

Clearly this is a big number of people and the good news is that most can be effectively treated (especially if addressed quickly). Unfortunately the stigma that is attached to “mental illness” is such that people delay getting help (often for years).

The stigma therefore becomes worse than the illness itself.

You see, part of the problem is that when referring to having a “mental illness” people are afraid that others will see them as abnormal or think extreme bipolar or schizophrenia; while the majority are no more than depressed.

as Ashburton, experience this problem even more significantly because it can be more difficult to access support and treatment and small communities know each other so much more that the stigma is stronger.

The solution to this challenge is therefore also to be found in the local community. Some of that is provided through collections of services that can be accessed through places like Community House. But some of it can be provided by the community’s employers.

It is really in the interests of a good employer to care for their staff. If an employee has a men-

tal health condition they don‘t acknowledge and get treatment for, the likelihood is that they will end up with an employment relationship problem because of their behaviour or absenteeism.

Believe me, I have seen it a number of times. But where the employer shows they care, that they understand the illness and that they will provide a working environment where addressing the illness is as normal as recovering from the flu – in these situations the employee is able to start healing and to achieve a level of work productivity that pleases both them and their boss. I’ve seen employers be open enough with their employees, that the employees give them authority to talk directly to their medical adviser if it looks like intervention is needed.

I’ve seen employees prepared to open up to their employer and obtain access to healthcare at appropriate times.

Pell denies sex charges Cardinal George Pell plans to plead not guilty to multiple charges of historical sex offences.

The 76-year-old did not speak during a six-minutelong filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

But his lawyer Robert Richter QC told the court the 76-year-old denies all charges.

“For the avoidance of doubt and because of the interest, might I indicate that Cardinal Pell will plead not guilty to all the charges and will maintain his presumed innocence that he has,” the barrister told the court.

A deadline of September 8 has been given for police and prosecutors to provide their brief of evidence to Pell and his legal team.

“I can indicate that it is my expectation the brief will be delivered well before, possibly late next week,” prosecutor Andrew Tinney SC said.

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds has set October 6 as the date for the next mention of the matter.

Pell’s defence team did not ask the magistrate to excuse the cardinal from appearing when the case returns to court.

The third most powerful person in the Catholic Church was confronted with a massive contingent of Australian and international media on his arrival at court yesterday morning.

“Not unsurprisingly, there’s been a great deal of media and other interest in these matters,” Tinney said.

Pell was charged on June 29 and as he was charged on summons, he was not required to appear at yesterday’s filing hearing but indicated he would attend.

The matter will now proceed to a committal mention on October 6.

During the mention, counsel will have the opportunity to canvass legal issues before

a committal hearing date is fixed.

Pell will not have to enter a plea unless a magistrate decides there is enough evidence to stand trial in the County Court.

“It’s only if the accused is committed to trial that he will be called upon to enter a formal plea,” Reynolds said.

Hawking’s chilling warnings to the world Stephen Hawking has issued a chilling warning to the world, saying humanity should be wary of seeking contact with alien civilisation.

The astrophysicist has warned that intelligent aliens may one day roam between fertile planets and conquer and colonise at will.

In his documentary called Stephen Hawking’s Favourite Places, he stresses humans need to tread carefully, or face extinction.

“One day, we might receive a signal from a planet like this,” Hawking says in the documentary, referring to a potentially habitable alien world known as Gliese 832c.

“But we should be wary of answering back. Meeting an ad-

In 2010 Hawking warned that if intelligent alien life forms

spaceships after consuming the natural resources of their own planets, which could threaten our own existence on Earth.

Sperm counts have halved in the past 40 years The quality of sperm from men in North America, Europe and Australia has declined dramatically over the past 40 years, with a 52.4 per cent drop in sperm concentration, according to a study published yesterday.

The research – the largest and most comprehensive look at the topic, involving data from 185 studies and 42,000 men around the world between 1973 and 2011 – appears to confirm fears that male reproductive health

may be declining.

The state of male fertility has been one of the most hotly debated subjects in medical science in recent years.

While a number of previous studies found that sperm counts and quality have been

falling, some dismissed or criticised the studies over factors such as the age of the men included, the size of the study, bias in counting systems or other aspects of the methodologies.

Emoji Movie slammed The Emoji Movie has come under fire for parodying the hit drama series The Handmaid’s Tale. The Emoji Movie’s Twitter account shared an image on Friday that modified The Handmaid’s Tale poster to feature an emoji, along with the text: “A Smartphone Original: The Emoji’s Tale.”

The tweet was captioned: “Blessed be the Emoji”. The tweet was deleted three days later after it sparked outrage among Twitter users, who believed parodying The Handmaid’s Tale was insensitive. “Don’t think the team from @EmojiMovie have ever read @MargaretAtwood,” wrote Luke Robert Mason.

Julia Sloane, the star of Real Housewives of Auckland caught up in a racism scandal, is plotting a return to the screen, The Spinoff has learned. The project is a feature-length documentary, featuring Sloane taking a “wise and sometimes sardonic view of the subject matter,” according to John Davies, the project’s producer. The Spinoff understands it is an exploration of sexuality in New Zealand.

“The milk powder, butter, and cheese group continues to be a key export commodity, and accounts for over a quarter of our total exports,” international statistics senior manager Daria Kwon said.

Exports of meat and edible offal, the country’s second-largest commodity export, rose 4.9 per cent to $616 million.

The exports of logs, wood and wood articles, the third-largest group, rose 7.1 per cent to $388 million.

Fruit exports, meanwhile, slipped 11.8 per cent to $419 million. The fall was mainly driven by kiwifruit, Stats NZ said.

Overall exports to China were

up 25.6 per cent for the month of June against June last year to $1.0 billion while exports to Australia rose 0.9 per cent to $672 million.

Imports from all sources rose 7.7 per cent to $4.5 billion in June versus the same month a year ago.

Car imports led the rise, jumping 31 per cent to $505 million.

New motor cars led this increase, up $86 million in value.

This was 2,566 more new cars than in June 2016, Stats NZ said.

Imports from China rose 5.8 per cent to $860 million in June versus the same month a year ago while imports from Australia fell 0.3 per cent to $533 million.

The biggest increase came from imports from Japan, up 35.2 per cent on the year to $376 million.

Amazon to come to New Zealand?

Top brokerage firm Forsyth Barr is warning Amazon may expand into New Zealand shortly after its arrival in Australia next year.

In a research report to its clients, the firm said Amazon’s arrival in Australia will likely have major implications for New Zealand’s retail landscape.

“Amazon is expected to physically enter the Australian market in late 2018,” Forsyth Barr said.

“Consequently, the likelihood of Amazon entering the New Zealand market has increased.”

Forsyth Barr said the arrival of the e-commerce giant would put increasing pressure on the retail landscape through its low-pricing model, adding that retailers such as The Warehouse Group and Briscoe Group were most at risk.

Companies selling products

such as media, toys and electronics were also at greater risk from Amazon’s arrival.

“Offshore data indicates the impact is more pronounced for smaller retailers, with large retailers typically outperforming, helped by market consolidation.”

Despite the grim prediction, the report also noted bricks and mortar still had a place.

“The offline retail channel still [represents] the majority of retail sales under our scenarios and globally,” the report said.

markets has accelerated growth of e-commerce markets and is likely to do the same in Australia.

Forsyth Barr said there were several possibilities for how Amazon may do business in New Zealand in the coming years, either through establishing a presence in the country, or setting up a fulfilment centre.

It may also choose to simply ship products from Australia to New Zealand customers.

The impact on New Zealand business would vary based on which option it chose, Forsyth Barr said.

Amazon confirmed earlier this year that it would be launching its full suite of services into Australia, and is reported to have settled on its first warehouse in Melbourne this week.

New Zealand reported a higherthan-expected monthly trade surplus of $242 million in June as exports were boosted by dairy sales, especially to China.

The annual deficit in the year to June was $3.7 billion versus $3.8 billion in the 12 months to May. Economists had expected a monthly surplus of $100 million and an annual deficit of $3.7 billion, according to the median in a Bloomberg poll. The June surplus was the fourth monthly surplus in a row.

Exports rose 11 per cent on the year to $4.7 billion.

Milk powder, butter, and cheese led the rise, up 45 per cent to $1.2 billion and on an 11 per cent increase in volume.

Tower chairman Michael Stiassny says it will consider the impact on its business and whether a capital raising will be needed after the Commerce Commission rejected a bid by Vero Insurance to merge the two businesses.

Shares in Tower took a pounding at the opening of trading on the NZX yesterday morning, falling 29 per cent to 90c after the commission’s decision to knockback the $1.40 a share offer.

The shares bounced back to 96c but are at the lowest they have been since February before Tower received a bid by Fairfax Financial Holdings to buy the company for $1.17 per share.

Vero, which is owned by Australia’s Suncorp, fought off Fairfax, with its higher bid but needed approval from the commission for the deal because it is already a key player in the New Zealand insurance market.

But commission chairman Mark Berry said the merger would remove Tower as the only independent competitor to Vero and IAG with the scale and brand strength to compete across the

Currie: Cow disease is of grave concern

The discovery of cattle disease mycoplasma bovis in a South Canterbury dairy herd is of grave concern, Federated Farmers says.

The federation’s Mid Canterbury dairy spokesman, Nathan Currie, said although the disease does not spread easily, the worry is that, as far as he is aware, it does not respond to antibiotics.

Farmers whose stock show unusual levels of mastitis, abortions or present with arthritis or pneumonia, should contact their vet immediately. Currie said farmers also need to keep an eye out for calves coughing, drooling or with ear infections.

It’s the first time the bacterial disease has been detected in New Zealand and Currie said no-one was sure how it arrived. It is commonly found in cattle globally, including Australia.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) director of response, Geoff Gwyn, said Mmycoplasma bovis does not infect humans and presents no food safety risk. There is no concern about consuming milk and milk prod-

“Right now we’re working with the farmer to contain the disease to the affected farm and treat the animals showing symptoms. We are very appreciative of his support in this work.”

The disease is spread from animal to animal through close contact in bodily fluids, Gwyn said.

“However, it is not a fast moving disease – it is not spread on the wind and there is little chance of it being spread to neighbouring farms.

“The most likely way it could spread between farms would be through the movement of animals that are infected but not showing symptoms. It can also be spread on contaminated equipment and through feeding untreated milk to calves.”

Gwyn said MPI has put legal restrictions in place to stop any movement of stock from the property while the scale of infection is determined.

MPI was advised of sick cattle at the property last Monday and mycoplasma bovis was confirmed by the Ministry’s Animal Health Laboratory late on Saturday.

Fourteen cows have tested positive for mycoplasma bovis and approximately 150 cows on the property have clinical signs that indicate they may be affected, Gwyn said. MPI is now tracing movements of animals on and off the property to ascertain if other properties are at risk.

Mycoplasma bovis only affects cattle and has no effect on other animals.

Farming defines us It’s often said Kiwis are sports-mad, but a new survey shows our regard for agriculture and farming out-ranks rugby, netball and other sports as a hallmark of New Zealand.

In the Well-being Statistics 2016 survey, in which nearly 9000 people gave their views, agriculture and farming scored a mean rating of 8.2 out of 10 for “important characteristics when defining New Zealand”.

Topping the ratings were ‘freedom, rights and peace’ and ‘environment’, both 9.1, and just in front of farming, ‘people in New Zealand’ at 8.5. ‘History’ had a mean rating of 8, and sports 7.8, the Statistics NZ annual survey said.

Federated Farmers president Katie Milne said she wasn’t surprised by the survey results.

“Kiwis can relate to people who have a No.8 wire, getstuck-in, resilient sort of attitude – all common with farming folk.

“And as much as tourism is a big earner, most New Zealanders also appreciate that it is primary producers who deliver the goods that win the lion’s share of our export earnings.”

The survey found that regard for farming as a key national characteristic increased with age.

Those over 65 were more likely to rate agriculture and farming as extremely important when defining New Zealand – 40 per cent rated it 10/10. This compares with only 27.5 per cent of young people.

That might indicate agriculture has more work to do to show our best and brightest young people that the sector has much to offer career and lifestyle-wise, Katie said.

Agriculture and farming featured in the top four mosthighly rated characteristics for European (30.6 per cent rated it 10/10) and Asian people (34.4). But Maori and Pasifika people tended to rate sport more highly as a defining characteristic.

Conference looks at govt trade agenda

A workshop looking at the Government’s trade agenda 2030 is a feature of this year’s Red Meat Sector Conference, which begins in Dunedin on Sunday.

The speakers at the Monday morning workshop will discuss what the government agencies they work for are doing to tackle non-tariff barriers and support the trade agenda.

Clare Kelly from the Ministry of Affairs and Trade will speak on the trade agenda through to 2030, including free-trade agreements, barriers to trade and maximising the benefits of existing agreements.

Kelly will be followed by Tony Zohrab and Steve Ainsworth, who work for the Ministry for Primary Industries as chief market access officer and manager market access respectively, who will speak on resolving SPS non-tariff barriers to improve market access opportunities for meat exporters.

SPS refers to sanitary and phytosanitary, in particular measures designed to protect humans, animals and plants from diseases, pests or contaminants.

Also taking part is Customs officer Chris Paton, who will look at the Customs Secure Exports Scheme and its trade facilitation benefits for exporters.

Later that morning there will be a panel discussion on the topic New Zealand’s role in a disrupted trade environment to deliver opportunities for the meat sector, which will again feature Kelly, along with New Zealand special agricultural trade envoy Mike Petersen and Roger Smith from MPI. Other speakers at the conference include Australian scientist Nicholas Archer, who will look at global consumer food trends and genetic preferences, RaboResearch Food and Agribusiness analyst Blake Holgate, whose topic is maximising the value of the New Zealand red meat sector, and Craig Rispin from Future Trends Group, who will look at creating demand for authentic meat.

The conference kicks off on Sunday with a political party forum, where Richard Prosser (New Zealand First), Damien O’Connor (Labour), Eugenie Sage (Greens), David Seymour (Act), Ian McKelvie (National) and a Maori Party representative will discuss their vision for the meat industry.

The annual conference is jointly hosted by the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand and Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Its goal is to promote and foster the red meat sector by providing a framework for engagement between farmers, industry and services providers, as well as showcasing expertise and best practice.

Anzco takes on cadets Anzco has taken on its first livestock cadet to help address an industry-wide issue.

Daniel Fenemor, 23, originally from a sheep and beef farm at Mataroa, northwest of Taihape, has joined the company on a year-long cadetship.

Currently working across the lamb processing area of Anzco Foods Canterbury, he will spend the first eight months of his cadetship working throughout the business before he starts procuring stock.

“During the eight months I’ll spend time working in marketing, processing, Food and Solutions (the value-add part of the business), in livestock admin and Anzco’s feedlot,” he said.

“This will give me a good understanding of the wider business, including the important customer relationship, which is a strong part of Anzco’s business model, before I start this livestock role.”

Grant Bunting, Anzco’s general manager, Agriculture and Livestock, said the aim of the cadet scheme was to attract more

young people into the industry.

“The wider agricultural industry is struggling to attract young people and the traditional ways of recruiting livestock reps don’t work today,” he said.

“The primary industry has a goal of doubling exports by 2025 and to achieve this it needs 50,000 new roles, but this has been slow to develop. The livestock procurement role is an important one in the industry and introducing young people is a significant part of Anzco’s strategy.”

Bunting said the company’s goal was to have cadets better versed in its wider business, not just stock procurement.

“If Daniel finds he enjoys another part of the business more than livestock – that’s fine. It’s part of Anzco’s bigger goal of attracting younger people into the industry.”

He said Anzco is keen to develop its programme.

A second cadet is about to start and further cadets will begin in May, 2018, which is a quieter time in the meat industry.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club The traditional July meeting took on a new format changing from members only meeting to the usual style where all wives and partners are invited to join with members for the evening.

President Lion Joe Butchard welcomed all to his first Presidential meeting. A smaller than usual attendance which was probably due to the colder weather conditions. A prospective new member was welcomed as a guest. An in-house informal but productive meeting was held with each sub-committee presenting their plans and suggested programmes for the coming year.

Opportunity was available for further discussion and input from members present.

President Joe, deputising for Lion Ron Paterson gave the list of planned Projects which included the usual fundraising activities such as the Christmas Raffle and the Annual Charity Sale.

It was decided to return to a presence at Boulevard Day. The storage container will be controlled by Lion Arthur Pawsey.

Lions Noel Lowe and David Horrell outlined the Programme and Social plans for the year which included lists of possible speakers and entertainment with the introduction of movie nights arranged for those who wish to participate.

Lion Sam Winterbourn presented the Street Appeals, Youth and Community Affairs report.

Regular activities remained, Drivers for the Day Care, Street collections, Meals on Wheels and Special Needs outing.

Treasurer Lion Graeme Mably presented the Annual Financial Statement for approval.

Lion Ray Harraway sought support for “Smiles 4 Miles” community activity on August 19.

Ashburton Photographic Society The weather has certainly given us plenty of options for our hobby in the last two weeks. Ten of us headed off to Lakes Heron, Camp and Clearwater following a heavy snow dump and subsequent frost. I find the best thing about the field trips is the interaction with other Club Members, be it comparing camera setting or the impressive picnic from the back of Brenda’s 4 wheel drive.

This month we also looked at moving objects during our Evening Meeting.

With several different objects set up around the room it was one of our Practical Learning Evenings Our Competition this month was Photojournalism. The image has to tell a story, like you would see in a Newspaper or Magazine. This was judged by Irene Callaghan.

Fiona is a truly amazing ceramic artist who has an awesome talent and ability to relay instruction to all participants at her workshops.

Some of our members, have been potting for many years and have been to many workshops, others are very new to working with clay, but one thing everyone had in common is that we all enjoyed the weekend, and all finished with huge smiles on faces.

Bringing these pictures to life was more complicated than we first thought. First you need to study your animal and notice the way their limbs work, scale the picture in your mind and start constructing (this is the point where reality sinks in).

You start with your limbs then build up the body as the clay dries enough to support each part.

Fiona guided us to keep us moving in the right direction. Several local events featured including the Colour Run, the Mud Plug, Ploughing Competitions, Mountain Thunder, Wheels Week are all included. It is good to see members out recording these events in our community.

Coronation/Phoenix Target Shooting Clubs Wow, what a week. Over 60 cards completed by around 40 shooters on the 2 club nights. Morgan Smith with a 97.5 on a SSS card was one of many highlights.

Our monthly Tuesday meeting opened with a welcome to two visitors by President Roger Lake. Members were also reminded that the club is now open to ladies who are welcome to join. Ken Paterson then gave us a mini talk. Ken was born in Oamaru where he attended Primary school followed by Waitaki Boys High. The family later moved to Temuka where his father ran a tearooms and bakery. After finishing High School at Temuka Ken worked at his father’s bakery for some time before selling up and moving to Ashburton where he took over the Mobil Service Station for the next 22 years. In 1985 he shifted to Christchurch where he purchased a dairy. After 16 years there he retired and returned to Ashburton 2 years ago. Ken has also been involved with Kiwanis, brass bands, Operatic Societies and the St Marks Church choir.

Carl Ruddenklau introduced our main speaker, Ron Smith, who gave us an entertaining talk, illustrated by photos and videos, of his recent tramp along the Great Wall of China. After meeting up in Beijing with a group of fellow trampers from Australia and UK, they spent the next 6 days making a 100km walk along the wall. They had to negotiate steep climbs and at times pick through rubble where the wall had collapsed. Along the way they stayed overnight in nearby homes.

Ron also toured Beijing and viewed the Terracotta Warriors. Meredith Lowe thanked our speaker and presented him with a bottle of wine and the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Vera welcomed everyone and called for special birthdays and Anniversaries. There were 14 apologies. The treasurer reminded us that payment was due for our 25th Birthday celebration on 28th August.

Forms to be signed for the trip to Christchurch on 21st September; the area luncheon at Myobi Japanese restaurant on August 24 and a trip up Mt Hutt on August 9. The Movie for August 2 at 11am was Hampstead.

A plea was given for someone to consider the position of Vice President.

Our mini speakers were Jeanette Crutch and Deb Ellery who shared with us their love of embroidery. Deb said she had always been interested in craft, having started knitting as a child with dolls’ clothes and jerseys. When married she had been given Plunket gowns with embroidered yokes which she loved and gradually she began to do cross stitch, then she went to an open day for beginners and become hooked.

Jeanette came from a long line of tailors and dressmakers. She went to a meeting in Christchurch and saw a French knot picture and was inspired by that. Together they have attended courses in gold work, silk shading, tassel making hardanger and wool embellishing. They have thoroughly enjoyed going away on embroidery camps especially the one at Wanaka.

They invited everyone to attend the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild exhibition at the Art Gallery in August.

After morning tea Nancy Winter gave a very humorous account of her life as a big sister of the famous Johnson Quadruplets that were born in Dunedin in 1935. The first quads ever born in New Zealand. Her parents did not even know what quads were and although her mother was Dux at primary school she was too shy to ask.

She thought her husband would know but he didn’t either. Nancy and her sister were sent to stay with grandparents when her mother went into hospital and were told that they would be getting a brother or a sister.

What a surprise when they got one brother and three sisters all at once!

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Mid Canterbury Executive Greetings to all: First of all, a big thank you to all those Women’s Institute members who attended, and participated in the Rugby Cup Day on Friday June 23 at the Seniors Centre, and all those who took part in the Quizco.

Thanks must go also to all who helped with the running of these events.

Although it was a wet, miserable day outside, inside there was a great number of interesting and colourful table entries including floral arrangements in a soap dish, best blooms from the garden, arrangements in an old boot, vegetable animals, greeting cards, knitted beanies and Peggy Squares, crocheted coasters, photographs, quilted table runners, even coloured in pictures of a lion’s head.

Cooking exhibits included a large display of jam, and baking, including lemon cake, gingerbread loaves, custard squares and date scones.

The stage entries followed a different format this year and these included impromptu reading, “make and model,” miming a motto, recycling of Junk to Funk, and the limericks which had to be composed in readiness for reading on stage after lunch.

Thanks go to Lowcliffe and Temuka WI’s for providing the lovely food.

Presentation of trophies was as follows: Joan Aitken Trophy for Most Points in Table entries – Wakanui WI. Low Trophy for Institutes with less than fifteen members- Lowcliffe.

The Rugby Cup for Most Points overall went to Wakanui WI with 59 points while the Hefford Tray for second place over-all, went to Lowcliffe with 55 points.

Congratulations to the winners and also to all who gained placings in their individual entries.

Fourteen teams, many dressed in the theme: The Lion’s Roar took part in the Quizco. Stray Cats from North Canterbury Federation took away a prize for the best name, while Netherby with the name Leaky Lions won the best dressed award.

The questions proved to be popular and a good time was had by all.

The new style Half Yearly Meeting combined with the Mid Canterbury WI round of Indoor Bowls will be taking place at the McNally Street Bowls Stadium on TUESDAY, AUGUST 29 starting at 10.30, after a cup of tea.

As in other years, games will be twobowl triples, with the proviso that one of the team will have not held membership in an Indoor Bowls club.

And all those not playing but wish to be part of the day are welcome to cheer on their team, and join in with others with card or board games, or bring along the knitting.

Bring your own lunch, although a cuppa will be available on site. It is hoped that the afternoon programme will mean less time spent on meeting business and more on guest speakers which are being arranged.

The Date again: Tuesday August 29.

Fairton President Val Farr welcomed eight members to our June meeting held at her home. The previous month’s minutes were read and confirmed as was the bank balance. Entries and items for rugby Cup day were finalised.

All members who attended the AGM in Christchurch gave a report on their day.

The Motto was read: “Elephants and children never forget,” and the Roll Call was display of baby photos of members.

The “Guess who” that followed caused much amusement.

Hinds The June meeting of the Hinds Women’s Institute was held at the Hinds Community Centre.

A mark of respect for our late friend and member, Kathryn Lilley, was addressed by a minute’s silence.

Members were welcomed and apologies were accepted after the recitation of the Ode and Aspirations.

The usual business was dealt with then our President Betty Wilson was presented with her Fifty-year membership badge, and thanked for her lovely tribute to the late Kathryn Lilley, delivered at the funeral service.

With a delicious afternoon tea being served by our hostesses Annette and

Val, we gathered around and shared memories of places and countries we had been to.

What an amazing number of countries we have visited.

These have included: New Zealand centres, the Melbourne Restaurant Tram experience, Adelaide and Melbourne for their many tourist attractions, the Sydney to Perth Indian Pacific train journey. Barossa and Yarra Valley Wine tours, lounging in the warm tropical waters at Rarotonga; Scotland for a Clan gathering, Aryan knitting and the Edinburgh Tattoo, USA for the Model T Ford Centenary in 2008, Singapore to London to Paris to Ireland – and so many more!

Val outlined her coming trip of a lifetime to Canada, and England, visiting friends in Hampshire before returning to New Zealand via Singapore.

Travelling to see the world seems to be a Kiwi thing.

A very enjoyable afternoon of fellowship.

President Pauline welcomed twentytwo members and a visitor to our June meeting held in the Seniors Centre.

Pauline and Denise gave a report on the AGM held very successfully in Christchurch, there, our member Rosie O’Brien had gained second prize for her painting of a lovely dog.

The speakers were also very good.

Pauline thanked the members who had baked biscuits to put into the motel

President Jenette Storrier welcomed all present then opened the meeting in her home on May 24.

She also welcomed two guests.

The Motto was read: “Making your house a home takes many things money can’t buy,” and the Roll Call was well supported with Biscuits for 206 Club.

With the closing of the meeting members adjourned to Muckles Colour-plus Shop.

Jo Skilling talked about interior decorating and showed members wall paper, tiles, blinds, shutters and discussed ideas, material, products and prices.

There was a lovely big selection to browse through.

Members then went to Charming Thai Restaurant for a meal.

All agreed it was a lovely end to a meeting.

Café in Allenton and enjoyed a lovely lunch together.

A highlight of the day was Gwenda Hansen nominating her granddaughter Wilhelmina Hansen to become a member of Winchmore Branch, many members have watched Wilhelmina grow up over the years coming to branch meetings with her grandmother from a young age, we were all delighted to welcome her as a member of the branch.

The branch has decided to purchase a number of copies of the book “Safe with Dogs” and give them to Primary and Pre Schools in our district, these books come in two age groups and

have lovely colourful pictures and good advice regarding keeping safe with dogs.

RURAL WOMEN’S REPORTS Provincial president’s message The cooler weather is with us so please keep warm, cosy and safe.

Our Rural Women members endorsed to support the “How to Keep Kids Safe with Dogs” Campaign being run this year within our region.

Author Pauline Blomfield and Buddy the dog have several books for different age groups. Rural Women members are currently distributing a “How to Keep Kids Safe with Dogs” book to all primary schools in Mid Canterbury.

Preschool educators will receive “Keep Me Safe” book together with pamphlets they can utilise within their centres.

Plans are well in hand for the Rural Women Regional Conference to be hosted in Ashburton on Friday 28 July at the Senior Centre, 10am-3pm. A great day for all with members from North Canterbury to South Canterbury attending to learn more about our organisation, learn what others are undertaking and renew or make new friends.

National Board Chair Penny Mudford will be attendance and she is looking forward to meeting Members. A varied programme is being offered.

Lynnford Healthy fit bodies, was the theme for June, the first meeting for the winter which was enjoyed by 16 members of the Lynnford Rural Women to a meeting at the home of Marilyn Gellatly,

Glassworks Road.

After the business part of the meeting was dealt with, Adeline Brown introduced Janice Brown from Enhance Massage a business started up last year, which Janice runs from home.

Massage is a great pick me up to release tension, stress, pain and gain some relaxation and energy in life.

Physical workers benefit from deep tissue massage on shoulders, back and neck.

Janice practises Raynor deep tissue massage and Reiki Hands on healing massage.

Work place massage demonstrates to employers the benefit of health and wellbeing making staff feel appreciated and can be arranged.

Janice then demonstrated hand massage on Marilyn Gellatly and Jill Harris, with both enjoying the experience.

The annual Ploughing Match is to be held at Ian Lowe’s farm at Winslow Road, Hinds, the catering for lunch was finalised with Judith Cameron and Bev Bagrie having things well organised.

On June 16 there was a forum on banking at the Sinclair Centre.

June 30 was the next Link meeting, with all members welcome to attend.

The annual meeting is to be held at the home of Janice Peck, Hollands Road, Tinwald on July 6 at 1.30pm.

Members to bring a small plate for afternoon tea. President, Bev Bagrie will be overseas for the meeting. Members wish her well on her trip.

At the end of the meeting, Jill Geddes read the poem “Awfully well for the

shape I’m in”.

A poem which has appeared in a few variations and is well suited for any era, having a number of claimants for having written it.

Seafield Since it was Seafield’s 86th Birthday we decided to meet at Stables Restaurant for our meeting and lunch. Eight of our nine members were present plus one of Kerry’s daughters Harriette.

One member is having a birthday later this month.

We did any business that was important like sorting up some finances to tidy things up for the year before the AGM and reminded about some meetings that are coming up in the next couple of months.

We had a project that we wanted to wind up for our birthday month so they could be given out to a local school and when everyone brought out their bags the counted total was 27 beanies and 27 scarves. Well done ladies knitting needles have been busy in the last couple of months.

We enjoyed a lovely meal and most of all a good catch up before heading back home again.

Hopefully we will be meeting again for another birthday in 12 months’ time.

In brief Leicester out for now Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie has played a straight bat to reports of interest from UK Premiership club Leicester Tigers post-2018.

The 22-year-old livewire is off contract at the end of 2018 and may be heading to England, having been overlooked for the British and Irish Lions Test series in favour of Hurricanes ace Jordie Barrett. However with Ben Smith taking a sabbatical later this year, McKenzie feels he has plenty to play for, including Rugby Championship Test caps.

Golf’s got to be in the genes

For Ashburton born golfer Catherine Bell, winning and the golf course were always going to go hand-in-hand.

For the daughter of accomplished golfers Robbie and Pauline Bell, who have both been club champions at Ashburton Golf Club, giving the sport a go was always going to happen.

“I first started playing when I was 12 and that was just because of my parents,” said Bell.

“At first it was just something to do but in Year 9 I started to play more seriously.” Entering as many tournaments as she could, Bell gave up on playing netball and tennis to focus on her golf.

“I was just juggling between too many sports so I had to give up netball and tennis,” she said.

“Giving up netball was probably the toughest thing.”

Bell said one of the advantages of golf compared to netball is that it is an individual sport, but can also be played as a team sport.

The turning point was when Bell decided to take golf more seriously at around age 14, when she found herself winning plenty of local tournaments.

She won the Ashburton Golf Club Champs at the age of 15, beating her mother in the final,

Bell first represented her region flying the Aorangi flag at the Women’s Interprovincial Tournament, before switching allegiance to Canterbury. Should she make the Canterbury squad this year, it will be her fifth time wearing the red shirt.

Bell said her biggest moment representing Canterbury came at the 2015 Interprovincial, which was hosted at the Ashburton Golf Club, where Canterbury won the tournament for the first time since 1988.

“Winning it there was awesome because family and friends were able to come and watch,” she said.

“It was an advantage (playing at Ashburton) because I knew the course like the back of my hand and all the girls had played there in the past.”

Not only did Bell pick up the team title, but she also collected

the award for player of the tournament. Bell said that while it was her proudest team achievement, her best personal achievement was probably making it in to the Junior New Zealand Team that travelled to Australia.

This year, due to work commitments, Bell said she is not able to play as much golf as she would like, with work on Saturdays preventing her from entering weekly Saturday tournaments. However, she still attempts to get out to hit balls three times a week, and play at least one round.

Having a crack at making a career out of golf was something Bell attempted, but was not quite able to make it work.

“There was six months were I just focused on golf and playing as many tournaments as possible with a bit of part-time work on the side but it didn’t work out,” she said.

“Looking back on it there are things I would do differently. It was always going to be difficult

to make it work and it would always be easier with more money behind you.”

Currently a member at the Christchurch Golf Club and playing off a +1 handicap, the 23-yearold said it is not something she worries about.

“I just go out and play now and don’t really think about my handicap anymore,” she said.

With golf being as much a mental game as it is a skill game, anxiety is one thing Bell said she has struggled with over the years.

“Anxiety is probably the biggest thing. I’ve been able to control it more as I have gotten older but it is easy to get more nervous if you are losing and go out thinking you have to win,” she said.

Bell said her focus for the rest of the year will be on the inter-club competitions where the Canterbury squad is selected from, before the interprovincial competitions begin, wrapping up with the national Interprovincial in December.

Huge comeback by Tall Ferns The Tall Ferns, powered by double doubles from Kalani Purcell (22 points and 13 rebounds) and Jillian Harmon (15 points, 15 rebounds), recovered from a 17 points first half deficit to beat Chinese Taipei 59-53 in the FIBA Asia Cup in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The win means that the Tall Ferns will finish second in Pool A with a 2-1 record, and avoid a quarter-final match up with defending champions Japan or Australia.

Tall Ferns head coach Kennedy Kereama credited the Tall Ferns defensive effort as the key to the victory. “We showed real mental toughness today – to hold them to 18 points in the second half is where we want to be. Overall we did a really good job.”

New Zealand only regained the lead (led briefly 5-4 in opening minutes) early in the fourth quarter and although they relinquished it briefly midway through the fourth stanza Purcell and Harmon continued to dominate proceedings.

Chevannah Paalvast became just the third New Zealand scorer in in the fourth quarter to keep her team ahead 48-46 with 3 minutes to play. Toni Edmondson (2 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks) only managed two points on the night but a defensive block and two critical offensive rebounds allowed Natalie Taylor to push the Tall Ferns ahead 52-48 with 1:30 to play.

Earlier a Cocks three opened the New Zealand scoring but the Tall Ferns were then outscored 17-2 and trailed 21-7 at quarter time – 8 turnovers not helping the cause.

Edmondson and Cocks scored consecutive baskets but the Taipei lead grew to 30-13 with 4 minutes left in the half.

Georgia Agnew came off the bench and provided a spark to initiate a 9-0 New Zealand run. Josie Stockill scored from a baseline jump shot and Cocks converted a reverse layup but the Kiwis trailed 35-24 at the break.

Harmon became the first player into double figures with a pair of baskets and Cocks add-

ed a jump shot – 35-30 and the momentum had shifted dramatically.

Amazingly Taipei were kept to just three points in the period as the Kiwis locked in on defence – 38-34 at three-quarter time.

Two baseline jumpers from Purcell tied the scores before a left handed hook shot from Harmon took the Tall Ferns ahead 40-38 and after that they would not be denied.

Yesterday was a rest day ahead of quarter-finals action today. The time of the game and opposition are yet to be confirmed.

Smith’s agent confirms details of sabbatical Ben Smith’s agent has confirmed the All Blacks fullback is likely to sit out eight tests this year as part of a long-term plan to ensure he is in peak condition for the next World Cup. The Herald revealed last week Smith, the All Blacks vice-captain, intended to take his sabbatical after the first two Bledisloe Cup tests in Sydney and Dunedin.

Smith did not want to discuss the topic until after the Highlanders season.

His agent, CSM’s Warren Alcock, confirmed details of the sabbatical to the Herald today.

Alcock said the original plan had been revised after Smith missed chunks of the Super Rugby season and the final two British and Irish Lions tests due to injury.

Because of this lighter-thanexpected workload this year, it is understood Smith hasn’t entirely ruled out continuing beyond the two Bledisloe Cup tests, but the plan at this stage is to take his break from August 27 and return for the Highlanders next season.

That would give Smith at least four months off and see him miss four further Rugby Championship tests; the final Bledisloe in

Brisbane and end of year tour, which is expected to feature five games; three tests.

“Contractually he’s on sabbatical now,” Alcock said.

“As soon as Super Rugby finished he was entitled to take it.

He has decided to make himself available for the two Bledisloe games because he has missed some rugby this year.

“The expectation is he will start his sabbatical after those two games.

“We built in quite a significant sabbatical for him because to get him through to 2019 we felt that’s

what he was going to need physically and mentally.

“What has changed is he was injured and had a reasonable break out of Super Rugby and missed a couple of Lions games so he’s reassessed things and decided he was keen to be available for the next two games and then he’ll take his sabbatical.”

Alcock charted similar breaks for Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

McCaw opted to take time out to travel away from rugby for six months, while Carter spent one of his two breaks playing for French club Perpignan.

Charlie Ngatai is back on deck for the Chiefs but how much influence the classy second five-eighth has on Saturday’s semi-final will depend on his forward pack’s ability to match the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Ngatai has endured a frustrating season with concussion. He then missed the Chiefs quarter-final victory in Cape Town last week due to an ankle injury, with Stephen Donald stepping up at No.12 before he copped a knock to the face.

After arriving back from South Africa, Chiefs coach Dave Rennie declared both men fit for the Crusaders. Ngatai will be expected to start, given he should be fresh having not made last week’s trip.

“It’s the least amount of injuries we’ve had leading into playoffs for the past six years so it’s a nice problem,” Rennie said.

Recovery has, naturally, been a major focus from the moment the Chiefs stepped off Newlands to the point players have been sleeping at specified times, and advised to stay off their feet where possible, in efforts to best combat jetlag.

In his six seasons, Rennie said the Chiefs had come back from Africa six times for seven wins – their only loss coming in last year’s semi-final to the Hurricanes in Wellington.

“The one we didn’t get right we played against a pretty good side.

No doubt we think we can do that better so we’ve looked at everything. I certainly feel we’re in a much better place than we were this time last year.”

History can be twisted to suit your preference. The Chiefs have a strong record against the Crusaders, having won their last two playoff games and the last three in Christchurch. But of the 18 teams to fly back from South Africa for a semi-final – only two have won, and those sides had their opponent on the same flight.

“History counts for nothing. I’m sure they won’t be looking at the stats thinking they’re under pressure. They get to play at home.

Our last two playoff games against them were up here [Hamilton].

“But we won’t be scared to go down there.

“We know we’re playing the form side in the competition but we’ll back ourselves to play well.”

The dominant performance from the Crusaders pack in dire conditions last week strangled the Highlanders.

While it is expected to clear by kickoff, more rain is forecast to fall this week and the surface will again be heavy underfoot, favouring the locals.

“It’s a bit unfortunate for a game at this level but both sides are going to have to deal with it.

“I think they’ve got 10 All Blacks who will strip this weekend in the forwards. That’s amazing depth.

“I thought we fronted pretty well against them in Fiji up-front. We’re going to need to do that again.

Sport Curry finalises contract Stephen Curry has delivered his share of success already to a franchise that desperately needed it. Now, he’s being paid for all he has done – and certainly will do. Curry finalised his contract yesterday, signing a $US201 million, five-year deal with the champion Golden State Warriors that initially was the richest ever, until James Harden topped it with a $US228 million extension from the Houston Rockets. Cobwebs a big concern

After two weeks off the court, Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition frontrunners will be hoping they can dust off the cobwebs early and pick up the full four points tonight.

In what is the big match of the night, Celtic will be facing Ashburton College.

Celtic, who have won two from two in this round of the compe-

tition, have picked up 14 and 13 point victories in both matches, but should find things a bit more challenging against a hurting Ash Coll side.

After thrashing Southern in the first round, they slipped up against Hampstead before the break, throwing away the lead and two points by drawing 27-27.

Methven, who were on an impressive run of form before the break, will hope they do not trip

up against Hampstead like Ash Coll.

United will face Southern in what is a must-win game for both sides.

The four points would be essential for United if they want to finish fourth and make it to the semi-finals, while Southern will be looking for as many points as they can in the hope of not finishing at the bottom of the table.

The table is just as tight in the

grade below, with Ashburton College B and Rakaia currently ruling the roost on six points each.

Rakaia will face a tough test this week against third-placed Celtic B, who sit one point behind them on the table.

Ash Coll B will have their hands full when they face Celtic C who are two points behind, while last placed and point-less Southern B take on Hampstead B.

Hanging out with Floyd Kiwi world heavyweight boxing champion Joseph Parker has paid a flying visit behind the scenes of next month’s cross-code showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Conor McGregor. NRL judiciary slaps Soliola with a five-week ban Billy Slater was so concussed from Canberra forward Sia Soliola’s high shot that he couldn’t remember playing in State of Origin III, according to a Melbourne medical report.

Soliola was on Tuesday night suspended for five games for the dangerous contact that knocked Slater out.

Evidence from Melbourne’s head medical official, Dr Jason Chan, claimed the Maroons fullback was “unconscious before he hit the ground”.

“He had no recollection of the previous two weeks. Not aware he had played State of Origin, or that he had injured his ankle that week.”

During a 100-minute hearing, the NRL’s counsel, Anthony Lo Surdo, demanded a message be sent by the way of a lengthy suspension for the foul play.

Lo Surdo also claimed Slater “had no opportunity to protect himself”, as he called for a sixgame ban that would’ve ruled Soliola out for the season.

“He was in an extremely vulnerable position,” Lo Surdo said.

“He was not expecting to get hit the way he was hit.”

But Soliola’s defence lawyer Nick Ghabar accused Dr Chan of speculating as to when Slater was knocked out, and claimed the fact Slater slipped had much to do with the high nature of the hit.

“Within fractions of a second he has dropped markedly ... at least 20cm,” Ghabar said.

“Contact would’ve been hip or shoulder height.”

He also argued Slater’s slip

had prevented himself protecting himself as he fell to the ground, while Soliola claimed it “would’ve been very hard” to pull out of the tackle.

However the three-man panel of Bob Lindner, Shaun Garlick and Mal Cochrane took just five minutes to agree on the five-game ban. The suspension marks Soliola’s first in either the NRL or English Super League since his debut in 2005.

He will be available for the last round of the NRL season when the Raiders take on Melbourne.

Breakers new point guard The Breakers yesterday unveiled their first overseas import – and in a rare move for the ANBL, he is not strictly American. Dominican Republic international Edgar Sosa will be running the point for the Breakers in the new campaign, filling a spot that proved somewhat troublesome last season. The Breakers started the season with Ben Woodside at point guard but, after he suffered a longterm injury, recruited David Stockton and then Kevin Dillard as they missed out on a playoff berth.
