One of Ashburton’s oldest family businesses is about to have a new owner, but for its customers nothing will change.

Tony and Christine Todd have sold their fashion store to long-time friends, the Preen family of Timaru, but when handover day comes on February 24 it will be business as usual – same staff, same high-quality fashion clothing, same store name.

“For 96 years our store has dominated the northern landscape of Ashburton’s main street, but after three generations

of family ownership we’re handing the reins over to another family,” Mr Todd said.

It was tempting to retain ownership to mark 100 years of the family business, but commonsense said when the perfect buyer came along, it was foolish to turn them down, he said.

“It’s a good fit for them to add Ashburton to their trading arm and from a customer’s perspective you won’t notice any difference. We’ve had a strong working relationship with the Preen family over many years which extends to a personal level.”

Christine and Tony will stay on as managers and both Todds and TCR will continue to trade under those names.

The intention of the new owners is to continue selling fashion clothing for men and women along with shoes and accessories.

The only change will be in the phase out of the lingerie department, Mr Todd said.

Another family to take on Todd’s

Predator control has been given a boost with a Government funding injection.

Making New Zealand predator free by 2050 is a big goal, but it’s a goal that’s been applauded around the Ashburton District.

The Government plans to make a $28 million funding injection into a predator eradication programme that would see New Zealand free of rats, stoats and possums. And the deal comes with a huge incentive for local authorities, conservation groups and individuals – a $1 government subsidy for every $2 they raise.

The Ashburton District Council regularly gives out money to biodiversity projects and predator eradication programmes are among these, but the extra funding would be a huge incentive all round says Ashburton District councillor Alan Totty.

He heads the council’s biodiversity group and said the new

fund was a hugely positive move.

“I know we’re doing it now on a small scale and its very positive that we’re moving to do this on a large scale, but how it actually works, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Mr Totty has first-hand experience of the benefits of predator eradication. On his farm over a three year period he has been trapping predators and while the uptake of bait was significant in the early stages of the project, very little is now being eaten.

“Now we’re noticing there is a significant increase in bird life,” he said.

Forest and Bird Ashburton branch chairperson Edith Smith has applauded the new fund and believes the predator free goal is likely to be achieved well before 2050.

Over the 54 years he’s been in retail, Mr Todd has watched the number of stores selling menswear in Ashburton dwindle – he recalls a day when there were five in just his block.

“As my dad used to say – nothing is for ever,” he said.

The Preen family owns Miss Timaru, a similar store in Oamaru and an online fashion business.

They are also a third generation fashion retailer, with the fourth generation of their family, daughter Sophie now working in their businesses.

Christine and Tony Todd might be trading the title owners for managers, but with new owner Tony Preen, there’ll still be a Tony at the top.

From P1 He joined the family business as a 16-year-old, taking over the reins when dad Les retired. Back then, while he wanted to build a career as a chef, the expectation was that he would take over the family business.

Neither of their children, however, wanted to carry on the family retailing dynasty and that’s fine by their parents. They’re happy for them to have a choice and to follow their own dreams.

Retail has changed dramatically and it’s a tough place to make a living today, Mrs Todd said.

“Speaking to our reps they talk about there being fewer and fewer independent retail stores around New Zealand; we’re delighted that Todds will continue.”

The sale has been 18 months in the making and Mr Todd said the new buyer’s investment was a vote of confidence in the strength of the Ashburton economy.

“We’ve got groups like the Lake Heron conservation group doing a great job and individuals like Alan Sinclair who’ve trapped 400 predators this year.”

The new crown entity Predator Free New Zealand Ltd that has been set up to administer the fund, would pull all the individual projects together, Mrs Smith said.

Looking good and feeling much better

Eight cancer patients and survivors spent time yesterday learning how to feel confident going through treatment.

The Look Good Feel Better classes aim to give women who are going through, or have survived cancer, the opportunity to feel good about how they look during a tough time.

Over two hours trained beauty volunteers take women through a series of routines to look after their skin, as well as makeup tutorials and a session on nail care and wigs.

At the end of the class each woman is given a pack containing makeup, moisturisers, toners and other cosmetic items.

They also get a booklet that outlines everything they were taught so they can do everything themselves at home.

Colleen Wederell, who survived a breast cancer diagnosis, attended her first class yesterday.

“I’m feeling absolutely wonderful, it’s an absolutely wonderful experience.

“To be able to come to something like this is incredible, it just makes your

whole life different,” she said.

Mrs Wederell was diagnosed in 1995 and had a mastectomy and 13 lymph nodes removed, she said she was lucky they caught it early.

“It was just unfortunate, I went to the doctor one day and they found a lump, I was devastated to find out,” she said.

Another survivor, Tracey Stock was there attending her second Look Good Feel Better class.

Mrs Stock was diagnosed with breast cancer in February after she found a lump in December last year.

She had double mastectomy surgery on March 30 and had immediate reconstruction done.

Yesterday was her second time at a class and she said it was a good experience.

“It’s good to hear their experiences and good to share my own stories as well,” she said.

Mrs Stock said she did not have to have a double mastectomy but she chose to anyway, she is not receiving more treatment.

“I was one of the lucky ones who didn’t need treatment,” she said.

Innovation needed to lift retail

Growing Ashburton’s retail heart will require a major investment of energy and innovation an inner town retailers says.

Arcade retailer Bob McDonald is convinced Ashburton could become a retail destination, but achieving that would require a collaborative effort involving landlords, the Ashburton District Council and the business community, he said.

“It’s a major investment to encourage new people into town

and we have to do that without penalising those who are already here. There needs to be an initiative between the council and the landlords to come up with something that’s really easy and user friendly.”

The ideal would be to target businesses that were boutique in nature, that were unique and that would attract custom from around Canterbury, he said.

Part of the encouragement package could be an innovation fund and perhaps rent incentives, Mr McDonald said.

“And we need to be after new businesses, different businesses.

There’s no point in duplication, we want complementary businesses in town. If we bring in too much competition then we run the risk of losing the businesses we already have.”

While landlords of post earthquake rebuilds had to cover their costs through rentals, if these were too high they ran the risk of empty buildings, he said.

“Rents have always been linked to bank interest rates so they should be coming down, not go-

ing up. It’s better to get 10 per cent less than to have an empty building.”

Mr McDonald suggests the CBD should contract with retail foccused along East Street and then down the centre block sides of Burnett and Tancred streets only.

That would open up the opposite sides of those two streets to the more ‘experience’ types of businesses that were needed, such as boutique food shops such as a cheese outlet, an organic bakery or a boutique brewery.

“If we do this right, it’s a win all

round. There’s a heap of empty spaces around now with demolitions so there’s the perfect canvas where you’re not going to try and shoehorn something into somewhere it won’t fit.”

A story in the Guardian yesterday and a debate on Hokonui Radio indicates residents want more opportunities to shop locally.

Consent ‘an election issue’

It’s commitment and passion rather than big numbers that can be a vehicle for change, says Ashburton woman Jen Branje.

The founder and front person for action group Bung the Bore says her group remains committed to forcing the Ashburton District Council to have a water consent removed from a site in its business estate.

While a deal to sell that site to a company that planned to bottle water might have been canned, the water consent and its possible future use remained an issue for the community, Ms Branje said.

The group held a commu-

nity meeting on Monday night and while numbers attending weren’t large, new members signed on and the commitment to see the consent on Lot 9 in the business estate cancelled remained strong, she said.

“Eventually we’ll take our cause wider, but our first task is to challenge the Lot 9 consent.

Our solicitor has sent a letter to the council about the consent.

This issue hasn’t gone away.”

It was clear the council was planning to delay making decisions around the consent’s future until after the election, but Bung the Bore saw the issue as an election issue, Ms Branje said.

“We need people around our

council table who understand and care about water issues.”

Membership of Bung the Bore was growing and while it was still not large it was a “small, perfectly formed” group that was highly motivated, she said.

Lot 9 is on the agenda for discussion at Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting.

Councillors will discuss a report prepared by staff taking into account a presentation by Bung the Bore at last month’s council meeting, the presentation of a 40,000 signature petition and community feedback.

Recommendations from staff are that the council retains the water consent for future use on Lot 9 but that it will develop

A judge has delayed sentencing for a drink driver who mowed down two Christchurch pedestrians, breaking both legs of one man, calling for more information on what he called a serious case.

Sarah Jane Arrow, 45 was charged with driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury. Judge Alastair Garland was “disturbed” to discover that no submissions had been filed by either Arrow’s defence counsel Allister Davis or police prosecutions ahead of yesterday’s scheduled sentencing.

She will now be sentenced on September 28.

School locked down

Preparations for craft bazaar in full swing By emma moody

Armed police locked down a Queenstown Primary School yesterday afternoon, as police hunted for a man they believed was armed. The incident is over and things have returned to normal at the school, said a spokeswoman for Remarkables Primary School.

The school was locked down at 12.25pm yesterday for five minutes as instructed by the Queenstown police. Police said they were called to a domestic incident about midday where a 20-year-old male left a Frankton address believed to be in possession of a weapon.

The man was found near his home shortly after and arrested without incident.

For the past five days, members of Altrusa Ashburton have been sorting through mountains of yarn and fabric to prepare for this year’s fabric and craft bazaar.

This is the second year Altrusa has independently run the bazaar, two years ago they helped the Arthritis Foundation run the bazaar.

The convener of the bazaar, Helen Hooper, said there has been a steady stream of donations for the past three weeks.

“We have knitting, embroidery, tapestry, anything for needlework you can think of really,” she said.

Also for sale will be a wheeling loom, different types of fabric and a wide variety of sewing patterns and magazines.

“Right now, it’s a matter of finding somewhere to put it all until we can move it to the hall,” Mrs Hooper said.

Diabetes is New Zealand’s fastest-growing health crisis. The number of New Zealanders living with diabetes has doubled from 125,000 to 250,000 in the past 10

years, with 40 new diabetes diagnoses every day.

It is estimated a further one in four New Zealanders has prediabetes and a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Approximately 90 per cent of New Zealanders with diabetes have type 2, and it is often more lifestyle related.

Ashburton’s annual general meeting will be on August 25, at the Ashburton Seniors Centre, starting at 7.30pm.

Drivers in the Bay region got more tickets than anywhere else in the North Island for travelling too slow last year and it’s not just elderly people being pinged for the offence. Police issued 48 tickets to Bay of Plenty drivers for slow or inconsiderate driving in 2015 – the third most for any district in the country. And at $150 a pop, it’s nothing to be sneezed at. Automobile Association Bay of Plenty said most tickets were likely given to drivers holding up long tails of traffic without pulling over.

District chairman Terry Molloy said no one demographic was responsible.

Man holds up planes One Jetstar flight had to be evacuated and up to three may have been delayed after a man running late triggered an alarm at Auckland Airport’s domestic terminal yesterday. The Aviation Security Service (Avsec) reported that at around 2.10pm, a man forced his way back through the airport’s “shark’s teeth gate” into terminal pier. “Once the sterile area is beached an alarm is triggered and it is standard safety and security procedure to re-screen passengers in the area,” Avsec spokesperson Mike Richards said. Passengers had been sent back for re-screening.

White water facility planned

Mid Canterbury could be home to an artificial white water recreational facility if consent for the Klondyke Storage proposal is granted.

Resource consents were lodged to build a new irrigation water storage pond earlier this month.

Rangitata Diversion Race Management Limited (RDRML) CEO Ben Curry updated the Ashbur-

ton Water Management Zone Committee on the progress of the Klondyke Storage proposal yesterday.

The pond could potentially cover 200 hectares with the capacity to hold 53 million cubic metres of water, stored when the Rangitata River flows exceed a predetermined level.

Mr Curry said RDRML had been talking to White Water New Zealand about the feasibility of

building a white water facility on the scale of the Hawea Standing Wave on the outflow of the pond.

The consent to build the storage pond will be publicly notified, after which supporters and opponents of the project will have 20 working days to make submissions. An Environment Canterbury hearing has been pencilled in for November.

Mr Curry said RDRML had been liaising with stakeholders,

interest groups, recreational river users and environmentalists for several months.

The plans include provisions to realign Shepherds Bush Road, relocate lizard populations, develop wetlands and plant out large tracts of land in native species.

Ashburton Fire Station has a new fire appliance after their new Type Two vehicle arrived last Thursday.

The new Type Two will replace an older one as the first out appliance and will handle any fire in the town district.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the new appliance is mostly the same as older units however, it features modern external LED lights as well as some changes to lockers.

He said the body is deemed to be mostly the same as the older model but with some minor tweaks.

The old truck will stay in the South Island for a few weeks to compete in the National Drivers’ Challenge before moving to the training centre in Rotorua.

The New Zealand Fire Service hope to modernise their training fleet so trainees are more familiar with the types of appliances they will work with at their brigades.

With an estimated price tag of $260 million, Mr Curry said the design was not set yet and as the pond could be developed in incremental stages, it could initially be built on a smaller scale.

Tongan PM makes first visit to NZ Tongan Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva arrives in Auckland today for his first official visit as Prime Minister.

He will be given a formal welcome at Government House in Auckland on Thursday before talks with Prime Minister John Key. First elected to Parliament in 1987, Pohiva has been a leader of Tonga’s democracy movement which until 2010 was ruled by the monarch.

Key said that as one of New Zealand’s closest neighbours, working together to advance Tonga’s development objectives with support from the aid programme were a key priority.

The first democratic elections were held in 2010 and Pohiva was elected Prime Minister in 2014.

Total New Zealand aid for Tonga in 2015-16 was $22.1 million, mostly spent on energy systems, law and justice, education and tourism.

Pohiva will take part in a wreath laying ceremony at Auckland War Memorial Museum and visit Tongan workers in Nelson who are in New Zealand as part of the Recognised Seasonal Employers scheme.

Barnett pulls woman from wreckage Radio host Simon Barnett pulled an injured woman from the wreckage of a car which crashed in front of him and his family, cutting his hands on shattered glass as he did so.

Former Ashburtonian Barnett witnessed the two-car collision while travelling with his two eldest daughters and their boyfriends on State Highway 5. He didn’t say when the crash happened.

They were on their way to Taupo to meet Barnett’s wife Jodi whose sister had died, aged 37, so were already feeling “morose”, he said on his More FM show, Si & Gary.

About 20 minutes north of the town, while driving behind a Hyundai iMax, a silver car in front of both vehicles pulled to the left of the road and for “no apparent reason” did a U-turn, Barnett said.

“I see it, but I’m not registering it. Well, I’m registering it now because I had to tell the police.

“I just look at it and it’s a moment of sheer, blind, unadulterated panic because I go ‘there is no way [the Hyundai] can avoid the silver car. There’s just no way.’

“And sure enough, it just hits the vehicle, full on, straight into the side of it. And the sound is ghastly.

“Anybody who has been in an accident will know that sound. It’s horrific.

“I just screamed. My kids told me I just went ‘Oh no, oh no, oh

Simon Barnett turned hero when he dived into a burning car that had just been hit by another and pulled a woman from the wreckage recently.

Barnett said he was convinced someone would have been killed.

“I pull the car over and my heart is in my mouth,” he said.

He heard the “piercing sound” of the iMax van’s horn, which was stuck on, he said.

Shattered glass was everywhere, the cars were steaming and airbags had been deployed.

“I’m in panic mode, thinking ‘What the heck do I do?’ And then I hear screaming. And I’m like ‘Oh no’. And the first thing I see is two children’s car seats in the back of

the vehicle that’s been hit. I race to the car and there’s kids crying.

The driver that did the U-turn is a female and screaming ‘I’m stuck, I’m stuck’.”

Barnett said he immediately jumped into her vehicle, fearing it would burst into flames, and tried

to pull off her seatbelt. “I jump into the car, and I cut my fingers on the glass. With all the strength I can muster – it’s amazing what you think you can do that you can’t – I pull the seatbelt.”

But there was “no way this thing is coming off”.

Traffic was starting to build and Barnett managed to get a knife from another driver in a campervan that had pulled over.

“I ran back to the vehicle, jump in the car and cut through the seatbelt, released the woman from her vehicle.

“Her kids are beside themselves.

They will be about 5 and 2 if that.

The poor woman kept saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry’.”

Barnett described the smell of burning coming from the car was “palpable”.

“She was screaming, I just thought ‘I’ve got to get her out’.”

Police told him it was a miracle no-one was killed. Barnett didn’t say what injuries the victims suffered.

He advised drivers to keep a knife in the glovebox of the car in case of emergencies.

Barnett said his wife’s sister had died a couple of days ago but did not say why. He said it was “dreadfully sad, just a ghastly situation.

Thirty-seven years old, three beautiful children but I won’t go there.”

Barnett is married with four daughters.

A woman who drove her child to school while six times over the drink-driving limit has been sentenced to supervision and community work.

Wanaka mother Ursula Ann O’Reilly, 42, had an “extraordinarily high’’ breath-alcohol level when tested by police, Judge Bernadette Farnan said.

Sentencing the woman in the Queenstown District Court on Monday, Judge Farnan said O’Reilly had been observed by a following motorist to be having difficulty staying within the correct lane while driving along Mt Iron Drive, Wanaka, at 9am on May 26.

At one point the witness saw the car pull over and O’Reilly get out, vomit then get back in the car and continue driving.

Police visited her home a short time later and carried out a breath test, which returned a reading of 1540mcg.

The legal limit for adult drivers is 250mcg.

“That is an extraordinarily high level and it is certainly isn’t surprising you had difficulty driving on this occasion,’’ Judge Farnan said.

Any driver with more than 250mcg in their system gets ticketed.

Those over the criminal limit of 400mcg are required to go to court.

O’Reilly told police she was taking her

child to school. She said she had not consumed any alcohol that day but had “two or three’’ bottles of wine the previous evening and had not eaten any food.

Judge Farnan said the pre-sentence report made it clear she was remorseful.

She was struggling to cope with a recent separation and also had a health issue.

She accepted responsibility and said it was stupid to drive on that occasion. But it was concerning she did not fully accept she had an issue with alcohol, Judge Farnan said.

“You clearly need all the assistance you can get.’’

Judge Farnan said it was necessary to denounce the offending and deter others.

O’Reilly was sentenced to nine months’ supervision, with conditions she attend and complete any alcohol and drug programmes, treatment and counselling to the satisfaction of a probation officer.

She was also sentenced to 150 hours’ community work and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Child, Youth and Family was notified when she was convicted in June.

O’Reilly had been granted interim name suppression but did not apply for permanent name suppression.

Retail rebirth council’s number one focus Sue Newman

T

he call for a revitalisation of Ashburton’s business heart is gaining momentum.

Facebook posters have been posting in large numbers and the business community itself is talking. Everyone, it seems, wants to see Ashburton become a more vibrant place to shop, everyone it seems wants a greater range of shops, but it’s the getting there that’s the problem.

It’s all very well to want, but we have to bridge the gap between wanting and actually making things happen.

Business Mid Canterbury is keen to get on board the project by holding a think tank to come up with weird, wonderful and wacky ideas that could attract new businesses and the organisation has the backing of the tourism team.

They’re prepared to start the ball rolling and there appears to be plenty of fire in plenty of bellies around town, but what’s needed now is the real grunt that would come from the Ashburton District Council picking up this project. And the timing for it to do this could never be better.

The council has fired Grow Mid Canterbury as its provider of economic services and that’s created a real opportunity for it to do things differently. The money is already tagged in this year’s budget, all $247,000 of it.

All that’s needed is a change in thinking by the council and a bold change of direction.

The council is already planning to develop a new economic strategy so the timing is right for the focus of that strategy for the coming year to be on boosting the district’s retail heart.

What better way to spend that money than on a hard-out promotion of what we’ve got to the people we want, wherever they are around New Zealand. We need to give them every reason to relocate their businesses to Ashburton.

Getting life back into Ashburton’s retail heart won’t happen overnight and it won’t happen without a huge effort by multiple players. We can’t afford to sit back and just hope; do that and we’ll watch retail Ashburton die.

Make an effort, plan, spend some money, pour in some energy, sell ourselves to the right businesspeople with the right ideas and our business community will flourish.

Outrage over child torture

BY PAUL OSBORNE The Northern Territory corrections minister has been sacked after the prime minister promised a royal commission into the abuse of children by guards in youth detention in the territory.

The pledge from a “deeply shocked” Malcolm Turnbull came in the wake of footage aired by the ABC Four Corners programme showing teens being stripped naked, teargassed and held in solitary confinement for weeks at a time in the Don Dale centre in 2014 and 2015.

In one video, a 17-year-old is hooded, shackled to a “mechanical device” chair and left alone for two hours.

NT Chief Minister Adam Giles yesterday took over the corrections portfolio from the minister and retiring MP John Elferink and admitted to a systemic “culture of cover-up” which had led to most of the footage being kept secret from cabinet and police.

Nineteen killed, 20 wounded in mass knifing At least 19 people were killed and about 20 wounded in a knife attack yesterday at a facility for the handicapped in a city just outside Tokyo in the worst mass killing in generations in Japan.

Police said they responded to a call at about 2.30am from an employee saying something horrible was happening at the facility in the city of Sagamihara, 50 kilometres west of Tokyo.

A man turned himself in at a police station about two hours later, police in Sagamihara said. He left the knife in his car when he entered the station.

He has been arrested on suspi-

cion of attempted murder and trespassing.

Officials in Kanagawa prefecture, which borders Tokyo, identified the suspect as Satoshi Uematsu, and said he had worked at the facility until February. Japanese media reports said he was 26 years old.

He entered the building about 2.10am by breaking a glass window on the first floor of a residential building at the facility, Shinya Sakuma, head of prefectural health and welfare division, said at a news conference.

Kanagawa Gov. Yuji Kuroiwa expressed his condolences to the victims.

The Sagamihara City fire department says that 19 people were confirmed dead in the attack. The fire department said doctors at the scene confirmed the deaths.

The death toll could make this the worst mass killing in Japan in the post-World War Two era.

A woman who lives across from the facility told Japanese broadcaster NHK that she saw police cars enter the facility around 3.30am.

“I was told by a policeman to stay inside my house, as it could be dangerous,” she said.

“Then ambulances began arriving, and blood-covered

people were taken away.”

Japanese broadcaster NTV reported that Uematsu was upset because he had been fired, but that could not be independently confirmed.

The facility, called the Tsukui Yamayuri-en, is home to about 150 adult residents who have mental disabilities, Japan’s Kyodo News service said.

Television footage showed a number of ambulances parked outside, with medical and other rescue workers running in and out.

Mass killings are relatively rare in Japan, which has extremely strict gun-control laws.

A music promoter says he’s working on bringing two of the world’s hottest acts - Guns N’ Roses and Adele - to New Zealand. In an interview with Fairfax, promoter Paul Dainty said he was attempting to bring both acts here before the end of next year. He wants Guns N’ Roses to perform at Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium, and Adele to be hosted at Eden Park. If successful, both stadium-sized shows are likely to be huge drawcards. Guns N’ Roses were last here in 2007. British singer Adele is one of the world’s most popular artists, but only performs infrequently live and has never performed in New Zealand.

Gunman shot by Pokemon Go player he tries to rob Authorities say a gunman tried to rob a group of people playing the Pokemon Go game at a Las Vegas park, so a player pulled a firearm and the two sides exchanged fire.

Police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said two men in the case now have non-life threatening injuries.

Police said an armed man and a juvenile drove up to the group in an SUV and demanded their possessions at gunpoint. One of the Pokemon players who has a concealed weapons permit drew his own gun and the two sides exchanged fire.

One person in the Pokemon group was shot once in the stomach and taken to the hospital. Meltzer said it’s unclear if that person shot is also

the player who had his own gun but that the group of local players knew each other.

The man believed to be the suspect also appeared at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back. A matching SUV was also found at the hospital.

Charges are expected against both the suspect and the juvenile who was driving the SUV, Meltzer said.

This isn’t the first report of suspects trying to rob people engrossed in the hugely-popular Pokemon Go game. Four

teens in St. Louis robbed victims earlier this month after luring them to a specific location using the Pokemon Go, a GPS-powered “augmented reality” game.

Since it launched earlier this month, the game’s booming popularity has created unintended consequences in everyday life, from annoyed property owners dealing with hordes of monster hunters to store owners using the game to attract customers.

Anika Moa says she’s gunning for Paul Henry and Mike Hosking after getting funding approved for her very own talk show. The Kiwi musician has been granted $641,549 of NZ On Air funding to make 10 half-hour episodes of All Talk With Anika Moa, to screen on Maori Television. The funding body described the show as “an edgy, entertaining new talk show” that will include featured guests and “take on the week’s trending topics”. Moa has experience hosting her own show, after a hugely popular chat show on the Herald, where she hilariously interviewed celebrities like Stan Walker and Art Green. Moa quickly took to Twitter to celebrate, joking All Talk would be “like a horror train wreck but with Maori words”.

New Zealand fruit exports on a high New Zealand fruit exports have been the shining star of commodities over the past year, countering a weak period for exports of dairy products.

The country’s merchandise exports advanced 2 per cent to $49.34 billion in the 12 months ended June 30, Statistics New Zealand said.

Fruit, the country’s fourth-largest export commodity, jumped 31 per cent to $2.63 billion, while dairy exports, the largest group, declined 7.3 per cent to $11.16 billion, the agency said.

Fruit exports are going through a purple patch as previous investment in developing markets and varieties starts to pay off.

The $617 million gain in annual fruit exports eclipsed a $250 million rise in forestry product ex-

ports and a $237 million increase in meat exports. The increase in annual fruit exports was led by kiwifruit, which set a new record, up 41 per cent to $1.7 billion, while apple exports increased 23 per cent.

ANZ rural economist Con Williams said the apple industry has developed new trademarked varieties that are favoured by the higher returning Asian market, and the kiwifruit industry is more weighted towards the golden varieties which face less competitive pressure and are preferred in Asian countries for the sweeter taste, helping lift price premiums.

That contrasts with the country’s dairy and meat industries, which have tended to position themselves as lower-cost producers, he said.

The introduction of compulsory drug testing is being cited as one of the reasons for a drop in enrolments on trades courses at all four Waiariki Institute of Technology campuses.

But the polytech says the positives of the policy far outweigh the negatives.

Figures released to the Rotorua Daily Post show enrolments at Waiariki for semester one 2016 were down for trade qualifications in Rotorua, Whakatane, Taupo and Tokoroa, compared with enrolments for semester one 2015.

Whakatane’s Level 3 Carpentry qualification saw the biggest drop in enrolments with a 45 per cent decrease, from 20 last year to 11.

This was followed by Rotorua’s Level 3 Carpentry with a drop of 36.8 per cent, going from 19 enrolments to 12.

Waiariki – before its formal merger with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic – rolled out compulsory drug testing in its trade qualifications at the beginning of this year.

The testing is carried out by The Drug Detection Agency.

It is one of the only tertiary providers in the country to conduct compulsory drug testing of its students and has disclaimers about the testing on all the advertisements for trades courses.

Waiariki engineering technologies and construction head of department, John Kelly, said while the compulsory drug testing undoubtedly had impacted on enrolments, it was not the only cause.

“If we stopped doing the drug testing, absolutely our enrolments would change, but by how much? It’s hard to say. Things like the merger and a declining unemployment rate are also contributing to this year’s low enrolment numbers.”

He said enrolments for semester two this year were also looking “flat”.

“We have been sending the message out that we are doing compulsory drug testing and we try to make sure that is under-

Of those students who did submit to the testing, 16 (across all four campuses) produced ‘nonnegative’ (positive for drugs) results.

A total of 239 students were enrolled in trade qualifications for semester one, 2016.

“We think the initiative is still in a ‘bedding-in’ phase. We want students to know there are strict conditions and the drug testing is not going away, but there is still a misunderstanding there,” Mr Kelly said.

“The reality is, drug testing will

be a part of their world with trade businesses doing workplace testing so those put off by our drug testing were likely not going to be students studying for the right reasons.”

Mr Kelly said about 95 per cent of the positive results were for THC (cannabis).

Those who test positive for drugs are stood down immediately for a week before they can submit, at their own expense, to another test.

If that test comes up positive, they cannot continue with that semester’s course, but are not prevented from re-applying further down the track, once drugfree.

Feedback from industry leaders and parents had been overwhelmingly positive, Mr Kelly said.

“Employers and the parents of other students are over the moon we’re doing this. Yes, enrolments are down but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Other polytechnics are very interested in what we are doing as well – all eyes are on us as this rolls out.

“At the end of the day, if we can give students a reason to stop doing drugs, they just might.”

The Drug Detection Agency Rotorua branch general manager, Errol Brain, said the percentage of positive test results at Waiariki was “just a fraction” above national averages in workplaces for 2015.

“We are going into workplaces in the trades industry already and have heard really positive responses about Waiariki’s decision to drug test students.

“For those in these industries, drug testing is the norm and students need to be prepared for that. Waiariki has done a good job in making sure it’s been an informed process and made it clear it’s not about catching people out, it’s about health and safety.”

He said there were a few other tertiary providers who did submit students to compulsory drug testing, but could not reveal which ones for privacy reasons. – NZME

Winter or not, cook under the stars S

o far the winter has been mild enough to keep the barbecue cranking, but even on a brisk chilly evening rugging up and cooking under the southern stars is a great way to create a tasty dinner.

Barbecued butterflied leg of lamb 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 2 lemons zested and juiced 1/4 C raw cider vinegar A handful of chopped mint leaves 1/4 C olive oil 2T tomato paste 1t coarse black pepper 1/2 t mustard powder Salt, to taste Butterflied leg of lamb ■ Combine all ingredients (except the lamb) in a blender, adding a little water if required to make a smooth marinade.

■ Rub marinade into lamb leg and place in an oven bag, turning frequently. Stand for an hour or so at room temperature or longer in fridge. Remember to return chilled meat to room temperature before barbecuing it.

■ Heat oiled barbecue grill until medium hot.

■ Depending on size cook lamb for 10 to 15 minutes on each side for medium rare meat, or longer for well done.

■ Place on serving platter and allow meat to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

Glazed kumara wedges

1/4 C soy sauce 2T brown sugar 1/2 C maple syrup ■ Brush the sweet potato and kumara wedges on all sides with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

■ Place skin down on medium heat barbecue, placing them skinside down in the indirect cooking zone. Cook with the hood closed, for about 30 minutes before checking for tenderness.

■ While vegetables are cooking simmer glaze ingredients gently

in a heavy saucepan for about 10 minutes or until thickened.

■ Allow to cool and thicken.

■ Place vegetables on a serving dish and drizzle with glaze.

Serves 6.

Salmon parcels

■ Season salmon to taste.

■ Tear off foil in large enough pieces to double wrap each piece of salmon.

■ Place two or three slices of lemon and some sprigs of fennel on the foil, place salmon on top, add the rest of the lemon and more fennel.

■ Wrap parcel tightly.

■ Barbecue over a medium heat for two or three minutes on each side.

■ Remove from heat and allow to rest before serving.

Carrot and apple slaw 2 granny smith apples, cored and grated 2 large carrots, peeled and grated 1/2 C dried cranberries 1/4 C toasted almonds, chopped 1/2 C Greek yogurt 2T cider vinegar 2T chopped coriander

■ Whisk the yoghurt with the vinegar and seasonings in a large bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and toss well to combine.

In brief Top squash on show The focus for Mid Canterbury squash this week is on Rakaia, as that club hosts a world class game with NZ No. 1 Paul Coll up against Chris van der Salm on Thursday night. The exhibition match is part of the Brownlee Trophy challenge, and the two professionals are certain to put on a superb display of top level squash. The match is scheduled for 6.30pm and all are welcome.

Faulkner wants recall Overlooked for the Sri Lanka Test series, allrounder James Faulkner is back home in Tasmania preparing for a red-ball season that he hopes will act as a stepping stone to again playing the long-form game for Australia.

The 26-year-old, who has just one Test appearance to his name and is best known as a one-day performer, wants to spark interest from selectors which he admits has been tough in recent years as he meets national commitments and struggles to get a run of Sheffield Shield appearances.

Trophy round heating up

The business end of the premier grade season is upon us as the teams return for the penultimate night of trophy round netball at the EA Networks Centre Stadium tomorrow.

Hampstead will meet Ashburton College, while Methven face United before Celtic and Southern round off the action.

Methven remain the premier grade’s pacesetters having been beaten just once this season.

Greta Currie’s ladies began the trophy round in clinical form,

dispatching of their closest rivals Celtic 37-27 followed by a 34-30 win over a plucky College a week later.

In their last outing before the fortnight’s break, Methven produced another determined display to see off Hampstead 26-21.

In contrast, United have failed to record a win in the season’s most crucial round.

An unlucky 27-24 loss to College was followed by a 25-18 defeat against Southern, before Celtic showed their class for a 3021 win over United three weeks ago.

In the opposite 6.30pm fixture, Hampstead’s clash with College has all the makings of a thriller.

Cindy Meadow’s side downed Southern (23-15) before solid back-to-back performances in defeat against this season’s two most consistent sides, Celtic and Methven.

Meanwhile, College will hope to continue on from where they left off; the school girls blew Southern away 43-19 in a dominant performance in their last premier match.

Celtic and Southern will bring

the curtain down on the evening’s action.

Ange Leadley’s greens dusted themselves off after their heavy loss to Methven on June 23 to register two consecutive wins, while Southern will be out to steady the ship and record their second victory of the round.

Magic unable to find a happy ending By dana Johannsen New Zealand’s involvement in the ANZ Championship has come to an end.

The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic were bundled out of the semi-finals by a ruthless NSW Swifts side, leaving the Sydney outfit and the Queensland Firebirds to contest what will be the last trans-Tasman league grand final next weekend.

The Firebirds, who are bidding to become the first – and only – side to win back-to-back titles, will host the decider after overcoming a spirited Southern

Steel side 67-64 in Sunday’s other semi-final.

It will be a re-match of last year’s grand final.

The Magic were out of Monday night’s contest by half-time.

It was a disappointing end to the Magic’s ANZ Championship story.

They have been New Zealand’s most successful franchise over the nine seasons of the competition, and the only side across the entire competition to feature in every play-offs series.

Many of those memorable play-off matches have featured the Swifts.

The two sides have contested the first ANZ Championship final, and have met in the semifinal stage of the competition five times.

Interestingly, the home side has now lost on each of those occasions.

By half-time the Swifts were well in charge of the contest, leading 33-24.

Needing to find something special to dig themselves out of a hole, the Magic made a couple of strong defensive plays earlier in the third spell, but continued to waste it away on attack.

Fitzgerald had no option but

to make radical changes to her attack end, and they don’t come more radical than shifting wing attack Grace Rasmussen into the goal attack bib.

While Rasmussen added some much needed speed and movement into the Magic attack line, she couldn’t help curb the turnover count as the Swifts raced out to a 49-31 lead.

With their season over, the Magic fought hard over the final period to try and finish off their ANZ Championship era on a slightly more positive note, BUT the clinical Swifts allowed them few openings.

Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson says he will most likely sign with the Perth Scorchers in the T20 Big Bash League.

Johnson, who played in the Indian Premier League after retiring from international cricket last year, with both Perth and the Brisbane Heat interested in signing the 34-yearold. “I haven’t played in the Big Bash in my whole career, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and maybe having a crack,” Johnson said.

Ecclestone targeted The mother-in-law of Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly been kidnapped in Brazil.

According to Brazilian magazine Veja, Aparecida Schunck, 67, was taken in the neighbourhood of Interlagos, Sao Paulo with her kidnappers said to be demanding a ransom of 120 million Brazilian reals ($NZ52 million). Ecclestone and his family are estimated to be worth over 3 billion dollars by Forbes magazine.

Lolohea to start Another week, another intriguing Warriors selection. This round Tuimoala Lolohea returns to the starting line-up at fullback with David Fusitu’a moving to the centres for the Warriors’ encounter with the Penrith Panthers at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Taking on the big guns

By Linda CLarke The under 15 Canterbury Country girls’ basketball team returned home from the national tournament in Wellington with a creditable eight place.

Coach Mark Douglas said they were the only provincial team to make the top eight and more than tested some of the major association sides.

Co-captain Ashlee Strawbridge was named in the tournament team, despite playing with heavily bandaged hands from a burn injury.

Douglas said the under 16 national representative managed to play all but one game at the tour-

nament, despite painful blisters that had to be syringed.

Strawbridge and Dani McArthur led the team, but Douglas said it was an all-player effort that took them to the tournament top eight, which had been one of their goals.

He said they hit the ground running in pool play with wins over Hutt Valley 73-47, Central Country 72-54 (thanks to a big third quarter with 25 points) and then Porirua 72-54.

The game against Porirua was a must-win event and Strawbridge stepped up, despite her painful blisters.

Douglas said they all battled hard, despite being down 10-7 in

the early stages and still behind at half-time.

After the break, they flicked a switch, ignored their nervous managers, and got down to business, running out easy winners eventually.

Their last round-robin game was against eventual winners Harbour and while Canterbury Country played competitively against a well-drilled outfit, they lost by 20 points, finishing second in their pool and booking a game with Taranaki.

With two players over 180cm tall and two others close to it, Taranaki proved just too big and too good, running out winners 88-55, but Douglas said his

girls battled to the end.

They then took on Auckland, losing 86-74.

“It was a great game that we got back to level in the second half with intense defence, but just couldn’t get them.”

The last game for seventh place against Palmerston North was a ding-dong battle, Douglas said.

“We were pretty battle-weary and bruised, but we didn’t give up and went down swinging 7554.”

He said they all deserved recognition, but Strawbridge showed her class – despite her injuries – by being named in the tournament team.

Breakers and Bullets on a pre-season tour The Breakers are once again taking their pre-season on the road, confirming yesterday that the club will host the star-studded Brisbane Bullets in a three-city tour of New Zealand in September.

Last season’s beaten grand finalists welcome a host of familiar faces in a tour that visits Tauranga (September 13), Napier (September 15) and Invercargill (September 17).

The Bullets have assembled a championship contending roster under the coaching of former Breakers mentor Andrej Lema-

nis, as he returns to club coaching post his Australian national team commitments at the Rio Olympic Games.

Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher says the series will give fans plenty to enjoy, as well as meet the needs of both teams in the lead up to what promises to be one of the best seasons yet.

“We are delighted to be taking our show on the road and to be visiting Tauranga, Napier and Invercargill.

“All three regions have shown a real commitment to show-

case the game of basketball and I know they will put on great shows for the fans in those cities.

“Brisbane might be newly returned to the competition, but they are already being talked about as being among the favourites with the roster they have assembled.

Concussion concerns Collingwood are concerned about defender Ben Sinclair’s health after his fourth concussion this AFL season. Sinclair was taken to hospital as a precaution after he was knocked out in a collision with Jed Anderson during Friday night’s loss to North Melbourne. Hunt lashed out at Lesner and UFC in an interview claiming corruption and calling for harder penalties on drug cheaters. “Before the fight I was assuming he was cheating,” Hunt said. “Look at him. There’s no way that guy makes 265 pounds. That guy is a gimp, he’s sticking needles in his a** like the rest of these cheaters. And the thing about that is, he’s sitting here saying ‘this is a fair place.’ Well, it’s not fair. These guys are cheating and they should be in court for it.”

Parker’s biggest challenge

England seamers destroy Pakistan

As far as big challenges go, they don’t come much bigger for Joseph Parker than Alexander Dimitrenko.

The Ukrainian was yesterday confirmed as Parker’s next opponent, with the two due to meet on October 1 in a 12-round bout at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, the same venue where Parker beat Carlos Takam to secure the IBF No 1 mandatory position in May. Dimitrenko, at 2.01m, will have a 9cm height advantage and an 18cm reach advantage when they step into the ring.

The 34-year-old has a 38-2 record, with 24 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

He’s on a six-fight winning streak and is literally a step up for Parker and has been signed specifically to prepare the New Zealander to fight the 1.98m Anthony Joshua.

Parker, as IBF No 1 mandatory, is due to take on Joshua next year for the IBF title if he can safely navigate his way past Dimitrenko, who is a former European heavyweight champion.

“Dimitrenko is a guy who former world champion Shannon Briggs went out of his way to avoid earlier this year because of the risk,” said Duco Events promoter Dean Lonergan.

“Even casual boxing fans know that all Eastern Europeans in the heavyweight division know how to fight”.

Dimitrenko’s career has closely mirrored that of fellow Ukrainians, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko.

He’s spent most of his career fighting out of Germany and has also trained with the late Fritz Sdunek, who turned both Klitschkos into world champions.

At 2.01m, he is as big as Vitali and, among his victories, is one against Ron Purrity, who knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in 1998.

It is more than four years ago since Dimitrenko’s last loss, against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev, who is ranked two places higher than Parker on boxrec.com.

Manhunt going on for live streamers The fight against live-streaming pay-per-view events is ramping up as private investigators hunt down and doorknock suspected online miscreants.

A media law expert says the new tactics are legitimate as evidence is needed should streamers get hauled before the courts for allowing others to watch online for free.

Sky Television has also revealed it has cut subscriptions to people live-streaming the recent payper-view Joseph Parker boxing bout.

In some cases, subscribers dobbed the streamers in.

Boxing promoter Duco Events is coming down hard on livestreamers and has called in private investigators to help.

James Bryant, 27, told the Herald of his plan to stream Joseph Parker’s clash with Solomon Haumono on July 21.

That night, a private investigator from Thompson & Toresen came to his parents’ house in Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast looking for him.

Bryant said he was emailed by another investigator who claimed to want his computer repaired.

He was unhappy with the private investigators’ tactics.

His father Ian contacted the Herald to express his anger at being approached by investigators.

“Please tell them not to knock on my door again at night,” he said.

“If they are taking someone to court they are going to need proper evidence.”

But Bryant was “not too worried”.

“They’ve got no proof apart from the admission.

“I’m 100 per cent sure that there’s nothing.”

England have dismissed Pakistan for 234 to win the second Test by 330 runs at Old Trafford with a day to spare and level the fourmatch series 1-1.

Pakistan’s batting crumbled against England’s impeccable seam attack with the second innings ending after tea as the tourists chased an unlikely record target of 565.

Chris Woakes grabbed 3-41 to stretch his wicket tally to 18 in two Test matches while James Anderson and off-spinner Moeen Ali also picked up three wickets each.

Opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez top-scored with 42 but Pakistan always looked vulnerable against England’s all-time leading wicket-taker Anderson, who missed his team’s 75-run defeat at Lord’s in the first Test due to injury.

“We were really good, there wasn’t too much that could’ve gone better,” England captain Alastair Cook said.

“Really pleased about the character, the manner in which everyone batted, we had a better tempo.”

Earlier, Cook (76) and Joe Root (71) smashed rapid unbeaten half centuries before England declared its second innings at 1-173 for an overall lead of 564.

With more than five sessions to survive, Pakistan’s batting woes continued when Anderson dismissed left-hander Shan Masood in only his third over.

Azhar Ali also struggled at No. 3 before he was trapped leg before wicket as Pakistan slumped to 25-2 before lunch.

Hafeez was caught close to the wicket off Ali before Younis Khan had an uncharacteristic swipe at the off-spinner and holed out at mid-off as Pakistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq (35), who scored a half century in Pakistan’s first innings of 198, tried to resist before he dragged Woakes back onto the stumps before tea.

And when Sarfraz Ahmed fell soon after the break to Woakes, England had little problems in polishing off the long Pakistan tail.

“It’s the good and bad thing about our team, we can have a result like this after a good game but we can also bounce back from it,” Misbah said.

Pakistan was always catching up once Joe Root’s double century spurred England to declare at a massive 8-589 in the first innings.

England’s only worry ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston is the fitness of Ben Stokes.

Classic battle expected

By Steve HepBurn It is shaping as the best attack against the best defence when the Highlanders take on the Lions in their semi-final Johannesburg on Sunday (NZ time).

The Highlanders arrived in Johannesburg yesterday and were scheduled to have a light run overnight to get the cobwebs out of the system.

Defence got the side home against the Brumbies in the quarter-final, when they didn’t concede a try and limited the home side to just nine points through three penalties.

The Highlanders have conceded the fewest points of any of the teams in the competition, just 282 points in 16 games.

The Sharks had previously been ranked the best side in defence but that statistic was blown out of the water on Saturday when the Hurricanes rattled 41 points on them in Wellington.

On average, the Highlanders are conceding just under 18 points a game.

At the other side of the spectrum, the Lions have scored the most points in the competition, notching up 577 points in 16 games so far, an average of 36 points.

So obviously something is going to have to give when the two sides meet.

It is somewhat surprising the Highlanders have such a stingy defence – not due to the fact of

There is disgust and disappointment over more allegations of racism in Canterbury rugby. A Fijian boy playing in an under-14 competition for St Thomas was allegedly harassed during a game against Christ’s College last month. No formal complaint has been made, but Christ’s College is investigating.

Earlier this month Bronson Munro from Waihora was banned from all rugby for 46 weeks, after being found guilty of making racial taunts at Southbridge player Peni Manumanuniliwa during the club rugby final last month.

Top filly targets Guineas Fortaleza is back in work to begin her quest for a major southern prize.

The Michael Moroney and Pam Gerardprepared rising three-year-old made only two appearances this season, but she showed enough for her trainers to set a Group One target in the new term.

“We’ve always had a very high opinion of her,” Ballymore Stables racing manager Nick Fairweather said.

“We will be looking at a New Zealand 1000 Guineas programme for her and first she will go to the Te Teko trials on August 2.

“She could then head to the Gold Trail Stakes or she could go straight to the South Island, a lot of her owners are down there, for a lead-up race like the Canterbury Belle.”

Fortaleza was unbeaten in both her trials before she finished third on debut last spring behind Tennessee in the Listed Wellesley Stakes at Trentham.

The daughter of Darci Brahma then had no luck when unplaced at Tauranga where she lost a front plate in running.

Also back in the stable following a spell is Ali Baba, who measured up well against the better three-year-olds earlier in the season.

“He had an extended break and he’ll be taken along quietly and be aimed at some feature races in the late spring and early summer,” Fairweather said.

Bunker in the spotlight

By Sam Hewat How many great tries have we seen disappear in the NRL this year?

Full-field runs, beautiful set plays, scintillating skill, a plethora of breathtaking moments, all stripped away because of the NRL’s new bunker system.

Worth more than $2 million, the bunker was brought in to try and speed up the video refereeing process and provide clearer and more consistent decisions.

However, it’s been met with nothing but controversy.

Rules and interpretations, especially the obstruction rule, have come back to bite the NRL with the letter of the law trumping common sense.

If anything, the bunker has sometimes slowed the game down, provided inconsistent decisions and infuriated fans, players and coaches.

So what has this multi-million dollar system given us?

We take a look at five of the worst bunker calls this season.

5. Warriors - Round 5 (No Penalty Try) Ryan Hoffman was fuming.

Not only on April 3 when he was denied a penalty try against the Roosters, but also on June 25 when the Sharks were awarded one for almost the same offence.

4. Panthers - Round 9 (Field Goal Attempt) The round nine clash between the Panthers and Raiders was an absolute nail-biter.

A last minute field goal sealed the win for the Panthers, but it wasn’t without some bunker controversy.

After the kick had gone over, the referee went upstairs to check a potential obstruction in the build up. Replays showed a clear obstruction of Paul Vaughan by Trent Merrin. While Vaughn sold the act, Merrin is shown wrapping his arms around the Raider which would impede him from charging down the kick.

The call is contentious and leaves a lot to be interpreted.

3. Cowboys - Round 4 (Michael Morgan No Try)

Boyd backs GI call for Rooster Mitchell

By Laine CLark Comparisons with Greg Inglis are nothing new for Sydney Roosters flyer Latrell Mitchell.

But when they come from Inglis’ best mate Darius Boyd, that is something else.

The “next Greg Inglis” hype began from the outset for Mitchell after he burst onto the NRL scene this season.

However, Mitchell has perhaps received the ultimate compliment from Test and Brisbane fullback Boyd ahead of tomorrow night’s NRL clash with the Roosters in Sydney.

Boyd admits he can see Mitchell’s similarities with his Queensland team-mate and close friend Inglis, putting the battling Broncos on high alert.

“He’s a superstar of the future,” Boyd said.

“He’s already done some crazy things that 18-year-olds probably shouldn’t be able to do.

“In the years to come he will play a lot of rep footy.

“He’s got that GI look about him. He’s got special skills for a big guy.”

Which begs all sorts of questions. What constitutes a penalty try? Why was it a penalty and not a penalty try? Why didn’t the player get sent off for 10?

Contrast that to June 25 when Jayson Bukuya was impeded by Simon Mannering and the bunker awarded a penalty try, in a game which the Warriors lost in golden point.

Boyd said that would be easier said than done against the second-last Roosters, despite their lowly ladder position.

He was concerned the Roosters had shown glimpses of their best before being rolled 26-10 by front runners Melbourne last round.

“They have had an up and down season but they have played a lot better the last few weeks - they’ve got some dangerous players,” Boyd said.

Brisbane captain Corey Parker also believed the Roosters’ ladder position was deceiving.

“I think they are still a very good football side although their win-loss record may not say that,” he said.

Parker was more worried about Brisbane’s fortunes, especially after losing Test forwards Sam Thaiday and Josh McGuire to suspension this week.

“Spirit has never been an issue here,” Parker said. “We do have the belief to turn it around. Now we have to provide the actions.

“We can talk about it all we want but we need to go out there and do it.”

The bunker ruled that Joe Burgess lost control of the ball while scoring a try on Monday night.

Not many people agreed.

It was a rematch of the 2015 NRL Grand Final.

The Broncos and Cowboys met in just the fourth round and, like their title battle, this one also went to golden point.

However, when the Cowboys were down 14-12 in the 65th minute, they dotted over the line courtesy of Michael Morgan.

The decision went upstairs and the bunker ruled Ethan Lowe had impeded his corresponding defender.

1. Rabbitohs - Round 20 (Joe Burgess No Try) It was easily the biggest bunker blunder of the season.

The decision not to award Joe Burgess a crucial try effectively ended the Rabbitohs season as they went down to the Sea Eagles 20-12.

The bunker ruled that Joe Burgess lost control of the football as he went to plant the ball down over the line.

However, replays suggest that the Burgess had a clear hand on the ball as he placed it down.

The decision sent the rugby league world into melt down with former players and commentators calling it an absolute howler.

What many are most frustrated about is the fact video referee Ashley Klein ignored the onfield call from referee Henry Perenara.

Perenara had given the try, meaning the bunker would need significant evidence to overturn the decision.

It caps a turbulent year for the bunker which will come under rigorous review from players and coaches at the end of the season.

Shock retirement call Michael Ennis has dropped a bombshell on the Cronulla Sharks, announcing his retirement at the end of the 2016 season. In the best form of his career, the 32-year-old Sharks hooker broke the news to his team-mates yesterday. Ennis, who made his NRL debut with the Knights in 2003, was expected to take up a one-year contract extension with Cronulla before retiring at the end of 2017. It ends a wonderful career spanning 13 years and 263 first grade games.

A point to prove Canterbury star Josh Reynolds admits his side got a “smack in the face” in their embarrassing NRL loss to North Queensland but are desperate to make amends. The fifthplaced Bulldogs had their four-game winning streak snapped by a rampant Cowboys outfit 36-0 in Townsville, bringing into question their premiership hopes. “We were very confident and to get a smack in the face like that wasn’t what we wanted.

But it sure shows us where we need to get to be a top four side,” Reynolds said yesterday.

Raiders’ best to come Canberra’s best footy is yet to come, warns star playmaker Blake Austin, as they attempt to lock down a spot in the top four. The Raiders are just one point behind North Queensland on the ladder after their 26-22 golden point win over the Warriors at home on Saturday. If they beat an out-ofform South Sydney on Sunday, they could leapfrog the Cowboys into third place - depending on other results.

Road closure proposal.

Some plumbing fittings have the potential for minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that has been in the fitting for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you run a mugful of water through your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissovled from plumbing fittings.

Ashburton District Council gives public notice of a proposal to temporarily close roads to ordinary vehicle traffic to allow Ashburton A&P Association to hold the Ashburton A&P Show.

Ashburton District Council is reviewing its current bylaws and now has three draft bylaws available for feedback from the community. The bylaws open for submission are Brothel Location, Open Spaces, and Dog Control.

The draft Dog Control Policy is also being consulted on in conjunction with the draft Dog Control Bylaw.

Council wants to hear what you think of these proposals and invites you to provide feedback through a written submission.

Sport Muralitharan under fire Bowling great Muttiah Muralitharan has been attacked by Sri Lanka’s cricket board chief for helping to coach the visiting Australian team.

The Sri Lankan is a bowling consultant to Australia, ahead of the first test in Pallekele. Thilanga Sumathipala said Muralitharan, who retired with a record 800 test wickets, had let down his fans by agreeing to help a country that he said had accused the bowler of cheating. Muralitharan was called for throwing the ball illegally during his first tour to Australia in 1995 and later in 1999.

Drugs ‘will be in Rio’ New Zealand 10,000m runner Zane Robertson is the latest Kiwi Olympian to lash out at the International Olympic Committee over its decision not to ban Russia from the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Robertson, who in the past had said clean athletes needed to speak up and be heard, criticised the IOC for its handling of the situation and declared “drugs will be in Rio”.

The IOC made a decision early Monday morning not to give a blanket ban on Russian athletes despite a damning report that revealed state-sponsored doping systems for a number of years.

Instead, the IOC handed the responsibility over to the individual sporting federations to enforce their own decision.

The International Asssociation of Athletics Foundations (IAAF) has already decided to ban Russian athletes from competing in track and field events, a decision backed up by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a Russian appeal.

However, Robertson also said in his tweet that the IAAF wasn’t much better, saying “they ban Russia as scapegoats to look like they are cleaning up.”

He bases himself in Africa and has always been a vocal advocate for drug-free sport.

Robertson’s comments follow similar Kiwi athletes around the world voicing their frustration including London gold medallist rower Eric Murray.

Former Olympic swimmer Moss Burmester also expressed his frustration yesterday saying drug cheats in sport can be “soul destroying” for those who are clean.

He also believed he should have gained a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, claiming some of the swimmers ahead of him were doping.

Rowing New Zealand chief executive Simon Peterson said the men’s four continue to train at Lake Karapiro.

Ioane a Crusader?

Former Wallabies winger Digby Ioane could be seen in Crusaders colours next year. The Australian newspaper is reporting Ioane has been lured to the Crusaders by incoming coach Scott Robertson. The Crusaders need outside backs, with Nemani Nadolo and Johnny McNicholl both heading overseas. Ioane, 31, played the last of his 35 tests for Australia in 2013 and has since played in France and Japan.
