Police investigate speed in fatal crash

Ashburton Police are considering speed as a factor in the road crash death of an Ashburton man on Friday night, and are also awaiting forensic tests to see whether alcohol may have been involved.

The man, aged in his 60s, was killed after failing to negotiate a moderate bend. His vehicle left the road, clipping some trees.

The Guardian understands he was discovered immediately but was already deceased.

The driver has been identified and police plan to release his name today,

allowing time for immediate family members to inform extended family and friends.

The crash, at about 11pm, was attended by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John, which sent an ambulance to the scene.

Senior sergeant Scott Banfield said the man had paid the “ultimate price” in the accident, which had marred a run of over 12 months with no fatal crashes in Mid Canterbury.

He said it had been a shock to have so many people lose their lives on the district’s roads in the first seven months of last year.

He would like to think the improved

statistics since were representative of motorists learning from the mistakes of others. Additionally a lower police tolerance for traffic offences could have helped.

As well as fatal crashes having lowered, there had been fewer serious injury crashes.

It was good to see motorists in the district taking a more commonsense approach, and even just one fatality on the roads was too many.

No lift for Labour Labour’s controversial stance on foreign buyers has failed to earn the party a significant lift in the polls. The latest TV3 Reid Research poll showed Labour’s popularity was almost unmoved, rising by 0.7 percentage points to 31.1 per cent.

The poll was taken after Labour reignited the debate on foreign ownership by releasing data that showed nearly 40 per cent of house sales in Auckland went to people with Chinese surnames. National also moved only slightly in the survey, rising by 0.6 points to 47 per cent.

The Greens remained nearly unchanged on 11.4 per cent, as did New Zealand First on 8.4 per cent.

Parks staff seek hosing exemption

It might make the rules, but when it comes to abiding by some of those rules, the Ashburton District Council believes it should have some exemptions.

A recommendation was made to last week’s service delivery committee that would give the council a partial exemption from complying with water restrictions during the summer.

The council’s water restriction policy is up for review and

council assets manager Andrew Guthrie wanted the council to change restrictions that would stop it watering its gardens during normal working hours when time limit hosing is imposed and an exemption from hand held hosing limits if those were imposed.

Councillor Peter Reveley wasn’t having a bar of that. If the community was on hosing restrictions then the council should be too, he said.

“It’s okay if people have wells and it’s okay if we use our own

wells. We should have one set of rules only,” he said.

Councillor Neil Brown agreed. The council’s parks department was a business like any other business in town and if it was given a dispensation there was nothing to stop other businesses seeking the same dispensation to water their lawns and gardens during normal working hours too, he said.

There might, however, be room to move around the timing of restrictions, particularly if day time watering was when

useage was low, Mr Brown said.

The suggestion for change is part of the council’s plan to review the rules around hosing before this summer.

In looking for exemptions, particularly around time restrictions that usually allowed hosing from 6pm, Mr Guthrie said staying within the rules meant the council was paying staff to work outside normal working hours.

Hospital chapel marks 40 years About 50 people attended a service to commemorate 40 years of the Ashburton Hospital Chapel at the chapel yesterday.

The service was led by St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church minister David Brown, while ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan delivered a sermon.

A candle lighting was undertaken by past, present and future hospital staff members, represented by Maureen Ford, Margaret Anderson and Kirsty Joseph respectively.

Miss Moylan said the chapel had been a special place at the hospital since it was established, being a quiet place to reflect, both for those admitted to the hospital and those visiting.

Mr Brown had dedicated a plaque for the opening and dedication of the chapel, as it had not had such a service initially, as well as to commemorate its first 40 years.

John Paul Nelson, 30, from Northern Ireland was killed on July 28 when the ute he was driving collided head on with a truck on State Highway One south of Tinwald. George Robert Ellis, 22, was killed on July 7 when the truck he was driving collided with a train at the Northpark Road rail crossing.

On May 31 Sally Summerfield and her 12-year-old daughter and daughter’s friend died when a Dutch tourist crashed into them at the intersection of Somerton Road and Thompsons Track. On April 25, Janet MacFarlane, 79, of Redwoodtown, Marlborough, died in Christchurch Hospital a week after a head-on crash on Ashburton’s Smallbone Drive on Good Friday.

On April 18 Alan Hammond, 80, died when he was hit by a car while walking down State Highway One south of Hinds. On April 6, Danny Hendriks, 18, was hit by a car and killed while walking down Acton Road, near Rakaia. Ashburton man Barry Whitcombe died on the Mt Hutt access road on March 6.

I know I’ve been given a second chance at life, and I’m so grateful.”

She added: “I’ve taken to giving complete strangers hugs because they gasp and are happy to see I’m alright.” There are still gaps in her memory for a six-week period around the accident and she has artificial hair on one side of her head to cover a scar. The magazine revealed a neurosurgeon had removed a chunk - 10cm by 10cm - from her skull to release the pressure.

Lucky escape

Conjuring up Kansas prairies for show

Two people had a lucky escape when a car they were in plunged into a river yesterday. The incident happened near Edgecumbe. A Bay of Plenty police spokeswoman understood ambulance staff treated two people who escaped from the car. “So there was no rescue needed. They got out of their own accord.” A Northern Fire Communications spokesman confirmed the two people in the car were able to escape the sinking vehicle before coming to harm.

The ever-popular Wizard of Oz will hit the Ashburton stage later this year courtesy of Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre.

About 50 cast members, aged seven to 15, have started rehearsals at the Ashburton College auditorium under director Kylie Maddren and musical di-

rector Matt van den Yssel.

Production secretary Elizabeth Hill said at rehearsals yesterday that it had been good to see high numbers at the recent auditions, and everyone who attended had been cast.

The variety of singing, dancing and acting talent was superb.

“The director has such a great vision for this produc-

tion,” Miss Hill said.

This included having Toto, the protagonist Dorothy’s dog, played by a person.

“That’s a unique way of doing it, but a cool way that’s different and exciting,” she said.

The personified version of Toto would have its own personality, and would “ruff ” lines.

Ashburton is joining a Canterburybased online party register.

In just a few days, Ashburton will have joined up to the Good One party – a website encouraging people to register their private parties.

The register was developed in Christchurch as a means of gaining information on hosting safe parties and reducing high risk drinking and the problems it creates – violence, property damage, injuries and car crashes.

The registrations are then forwarded onto Police, who work with the people hosting the party to ensure a positive outcome for everyone involved.

Ashburton Community Drug and Alcohol Service (ACADS) have decided it is time for Ashburton to join.

General manager Chris Clark said ACADS was looking to inform young people and parents about safe partying

and happened to stumble across Good One. “We were looking at providing information to young people and parents about safe partying and we looked around the country to see what other people had done and we found the Good One website,” Ms Clark said. “We just felt that was the best project we saw.”

While Ms Clark does not think Ashburton has a problem with private parties getting out of control she said the more information people have about safe partying, the better.

“We do know from being involved with the after balls that if you have parents involved and parties are supervised safely and they have the information, that it reduces the harm.”

There is a party on Thursday to celebration Ashburton joining up to the website. People will be able to register their parties from Friday onwards at www.goodone.org.nz.

Mid Canterbury firefighters attended two vegetation fires over the weekend.

The Hinds brigade was called to a fire in old pine trees at Carew about 3.20pm on Saturday.

Deputy chief Roger Sparks said it was a mystery as to how the fire started. It was about 80 metres away from a previous controlled burn, but wind in the area had been blowing in the opposite direction. Firefighters were at the scene for about half an hour.

Alford Forest firefighters extinguished a fire in a roadside treeline by the time Methven firefighters arrived on the scene about 8.40am yesterday.

Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade spokesperson Gary Blackwell said he suspected a controlled burn following logging in the area had sparked up in strong winds overnight on Saturday.

The strong winds were more of a problem on the north side of the Rakaia River, where they are believed to have contributed to a large scrub fire in the Canterbury high country near Lake Coleridge.

The Rakaia brigade attended a medical callout about 5.40pm yesterday.

Wet and windy weather is expected this week as a high pressure system heads eastward taking the warmer weather with it.

Forecasters expect turbulent northwesterlies to dominate central New Zealand through to Wednesday. “This means western areas are likely to be peppered by showers, while the east should remain mostly dry with temperatures reaching the late teens in some spots,” MetService said. By mid-week, some snow was even possible for alpine passes as a cold southerly flow made its presence felt across the country.

MetService said the latter part of the working week would be an “unsettled” time for many parts of the country.

Kids’ preschool health checks popular

Ashburton children are continuing to get their B4 School Checks in their hundreds.

The checks are part of a nationwide health programme designed to pick up on behavioural and development problems in four-year-olds.

In total there have been 365 B4 School Checks completed in Ashburton in the 12 months to June 2015, an uptake of 94 per

cent – four per cent ahead of the national target.

Allenton Medical Centre practice nurse manager Andrea Kinley said the numbers of children getting checked at the medical centre had remained steady throughout the year.

Five health practitioners were trained to complete the checks at the centre and they saw around 15 children each month.

The children go through normal health checks including

height, weight, hearing and vision during the 45-minute appointment, but also do things such as draw pictures and build blocks.

Co-ordination and diet and sleep patterns are also checked.

The checks are completed in the first few months of a child turning four, so if problems are picked up on they can be attended to before the child starts school.

Board Project Manager Alison Young has congratulated local health services for exceeding the 90 per cent target set nationally.

“Public health nurses and well child teams are doing a great job,” she said.

Powder snow as good as you get anywhere in the world is attracting heliskiers to Mid Canterbury this winter.

Methven Heliski director Kevin Boekholt said yesterday the conditions in the district this July had surpassed those he had experienced in the Northern Hemisphere earlier in the year.

“I work Canada, Japan and Greenland, out of all those places in the last 12 months the skiing in July has been better,” Mr Boekholt said.

“It’s been exceptional powder this year.”

There was no heliskiing yesterday as nor’westers battered the plains, but the winds would prove fortuitous for Mid Canterbury’s high mountain ranges.

The Arrowsmith Range in the headwaters of the Ashburton and Rakaia Rivers has benefited from both northerly and southerly weather patterns, and the cold July had helped create the exceptional powder conditions.

Client numbers were a little ahead of last year, and the main increase had been in New Zealand skiers.

“People are starting to realise the good skiing is in Canterbury rather than Wanaka and Queenstown,” he said.

And even though heliskiing conditions remained good in dry winters such as last year, the perception of a poor winter could affect numbers.

A 12-year-old girl suffered serious injuries when she fell from a trailer after being attacked by a cow in rural Te Awamutu yesterday - the latest in more than 4000 incidents where people were hurt by cattle in the last year.

A St John spokeswoman said crews attended the incident about 11am and the girl was flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

A spokesperson for the Waikato Westpac Rescue helicopter said the girl and her mother were moving stock, when one of the cows reacted adversely causing the girl to fall onto the tow-bar of a trailer that was attached to the farm-quad being ride by her mother.

She suffered neck and back injuries and the helicopter was dispatched due to the possibility of spinal injury, and the need for urgent transport.

No further information has been released.

Statistics released by ACC show there were 4279 live cattle accidents in the 2014/15 financial year, costing about $10 million in payouts. The most expensive cattle accident claim clocked up $93,300. - NZME

Keep alert for spiders hitching a lift on firewood

Just because it is winter does not mean pests disappear.

Cluster flies, ants and whitetailed spiders are still proving to be a problem in Mid Canterbury, even in the colder months.

Te Papa based entomologist Dr Phil Sirvid said white-tail spiders are common around

homes – having been in New Zealand since the 1880s.

“The thing about white-tails is their preferred food is another Australian spider called the grey house spider which as you can guess from the name, is most commonly found on buildings,” Dr Sirvid said.

“They are where their food is.”

Mike Ward said his business was fielding two to three calls a week from people concerned about the sudden appearance of white-tails.

“People bring a load of wood in for the night and that is when the spiders walk out.

“The issue is that the spiders will find it’s nice and warm inside the house and then they will

take up residence.”

Mr Ward said while it’s not a huge problem, awareness is important.

He recommended giving the wood a bang before taking it indoors.

Ants are another pesky issue.

“Because it’s been cold the ants tend to be forced inside the house,” he said.

Cluster flies, which were prevalent in the district over the summer months, are also still hanging around.

People are finding empty rooms and roof spaces still have cluster flies in them, Mr Ward said.

“It’s just really a good time to check rooms that aren’t used,” he said.

Clearing up confusion

There has been much confusion around the district’s three separate palliative and hospice care trusts.

Palliative care is intended for people who have an advanced or life-limiting disease. It aims to ensure people feel mentally, physically, socially and spiritually supported.

Palliative care clinical nurse specialist Olwyn Ballantine explained that in Ashburton, palliative care is provided in the community and in the hospital.

Within the hospital, patients can be admitted for respite care, symptom assessment and control or end of life care.

A multi-disciplinary team works in the hospital, consisting of social workers, occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians as well as medical and nursing staff.

Within the community, care is provided by district nurses and GPs. Other service providers in Ashburton include the Cancer Society and Presbyterian Support.

Ms Ballantine said there is understandable confusion about the various trusts and funds that exist to support palliative care, and that’s something she wants to set straight.

Firstly, there’s the Ashburton Hospital Palliative Care Fund.

This is made up of donations to the palliative care service and is used for purchasing

Police are hunting for two missing Canadian tourists who have gone missing in the South Island. Family members reported the trampers were overdue on Saturday, police said. The French-speaking men are Louis-Vincent Lessard and Etienne Lemieux, both 23, of Canada. The men travelled on an Intercity bus to Te Anau from Queenstown on July 7, arriving about 9.45am.

Their intention was to walk the Kepler Track in Fiordland National park, police said.

Palliative care clinical nurse specialist Olwyn Ballantine is hoping Mid Cantabrians can now better understand palliative care and the trusts that support it.

equipment and other resources to improve patient experience - both in the hospital and at home.

Applications for funding can be made to the multi-disciplinary team and are approved by members of the senior leadership team at the hospital.

Then there’s the Ashburton Palliative Care Trust which was set up 20 years ago to provide education and support for palliative care within the community. Finally, there’s the newest addition to the palliative care family – the Hospice Mid Canterbury Trust.

This trust’s objective is to enhance the quality of life for all Mid Cantabrians dealing with life-limiting illnesses and bereavement, Ms Ballantine said.

The relatively new group will provide things such as biography writing, mobile massage, companionship bereavement support and counselling.

This service is seen as complementing existing services.

Another source of considerable confusion is due to two people sharing the same name.

Jane Wright on the Ashburton Palliative Care Trust is the oncology and breast-care

nurse at the hospital.

She has worked in Ashburton for over 30 years and provides education, support and nursing care to patients diagnosed with cancer.

The other Jane Wright, on the Hospice Mid Canterbury Trust, has a professional background in teaching and farming.

Anyone who has an advanced or life-limiting disease can be referred to the district’s palliative care service.

Referrals are made by a hospital doctor or GP.

Prisoner seeks damages against Serco A prisoner in the Serco-run Mt Eden prison was so badly beaten he was left with serious brain injuries and had to learn to walk again.

The man is now taking Serco to court in a private prosecution - the first of its kind in New Zealand.

It is a new revelation after a week of complaints about Serco that resulted in the Government taking back control of the prison.

Fresh allegations yesterday that prisoners had been also raped and extorted have been referred to police.

In this case, Jimmy Akuhata - who was jailed for life for the murder of his partner in May this year - spent six months on remand at the prison after being arrested in 2012.

Missing tourists

Medical reports obtained by the Herald on Sunday reveal Akuhata was assaulted in his cell about 3.30pm on November 25.

Prison staff failed to notice he had been assaulted until the next day when they took him to hospital.

The report states Akuhata was “found to be semi-conscious this morning” and once taken to Auckland City Hospital was lying in bed unable to open his eyes or talk.

Akuhata was examined by doctors about 9pm on November 26, almost 30 hours after the attack, and was bruised on his face and body and “comatose”.

His lawyer, Richard Francois, said Akuhata was treated at a rehabilitation centre before he

was returned to the prison.

He is now at Auckland Prison, Paremoremo. Francois said his client was seeking punitive damages against Serco as a claim of criminal negligence could not be successful because of New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Act. “We are bringing a Bill of Rights claim - every prisoner has the right to be treated in a humane manner and not be subjected to cruel, disproportionately severe treatment or torture,” he said.

“We are also alleging gross negligence on the part of Serco.”

The Department of Corrections said questions over Akuhata would be forwarded to the Chief Inspector who was carrying out “a comprehensive re-

view of incidents, the adequacy of the monitoring and systems that are in place to prevent it happening again”.

Serco would not comment on the incident but said it would co-operate with all investigations into alleged incidents at Mt Eden Correctional Facility.

They include claims inmates had been injured after being “dropped” off balconies in the prison, fight clubs, drug taking and the use of banned cellphones by inmates.

On Friday, Corrections Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga announced Corrections would take over the running of the prison.

The Corrections investigations will be completed by the end of August and phase two by the end of September.

A health board staffer working as a psychiatrist has been fired and arrested for possible identity fraud, sparking concerns for dozens of vulnerable patients he saw.

Waikato District Health Board (DHB) said it had identified “serious issues of potential identity fraud” and a man who’d been working as a consultant psychiatrist appeared in court on Saturday on a fraud charge. The man’s patients included people with mental health and addiction issues. The man was under the supervision of a senior psychiatrist while working at the DHB but he saw some patients without supervision. The man was given name suppression and remanded in custody.

Immigration points Prospective immigrants to New Zealand will be given greater incentive to go to provincial New Zealand under a series of immigration measures outlined by Prime Minister John Key yesterday to the National Party conference in Auckland. The points that skilled migrants get for a job offer outside Auckland will be increased from 10 points to 30 points from November 1 – of the 100 points they require. They will have to stay in the regions for at least 12 months instead of three months. The points for immigrants on an entrepreneur work visa will double from 20 points to 40 points of the 120 points they require if they set up a business outside Auckland.

Hip treatment abroad Some Kiwis are going to India for hip operations, citing long waiting lists at home. Among those jetting off for treatment was Peter Tremain. The Great Barrier Island carpenter told Indian media he went abroad and saved money at a hospital with treatment comparable to top international standards. His sister Sally said her brother was now happy and much better off than he’d otherwise have been. Ms Tremain said her brother’s friend also went to India recently to get a similar operation. She said Mr Tremain would have been unable to work here for months as he waited for an operation, missing out on thousands of dollars in income.

Curiosity or envy?

he preoccupation with how the Prime Minister’s son spends his spare time has more to do with tapping the rich vein of envy that sells newspapers and television shows, than with simple curiosity.

It used to be that the children of politicians were off limits to the prying eyes that fuel our media and smoko conversations.

They didn’t choose their parents and they don’t pass laws.

But that was before social media opened the door on their once closeted lives and allowed ordinary people to see the sometimes extraordinary things the children of publicity-savvy politicians do.

These days, the children of politicians are in the public eye as much as they choose to be, just like anyone else who posts to Facebook or YouTube or AskFM. Just like anyone else, but with much more distinctive last names.

It was in this context that one of Max Key’s most recent online posts, of a family holiday in Hawaii, squeezed past the likes of the Serco prison scandal and the dairy slump to become headline news.

Some of the coverage suggested people were curious about what New Zealand’s “first family” got up to when taking time out.

Some of it questioned whether posts of a well-heeled family on a tropical holiday were a good look.

Whether it was a good look depended on the degree to which people expect the Prime Minister’s family to live the sort of lives most taxpayers do, to set aside who they are and what they have accomplished, to satisfy expectations.

As it turned out, most of the media discourse suggested many people did not like being reminded of a lifestyle the Prime Minister does not keep secret, because it was not fair that they missed out.

For some of us, a story about a wealthy young man doing what his background enabled him was not a story.

The real story was in the public reaction.

etting the best start in life for our children is so important. Supporting our kids before and right through school, ensuring they are healthy and well-fed, helps to lead them to achieve strong academic results in their teens.

The number of children enrolling in Early Childhood Education (ECE) is growing with 98.1 per cent of children in Rangitata participating in ECE, an increase of 0.4 per cent last year over 2013.

We know the earlier our children get started in education, the better off they will be.

The early childhood years are vital to a child’s development and to their future ability to learn, so it’s great to see that the vast majority of Kiwi kids are getting the best possible start in life.

Latest figures show a record number of eligible four-yearolds are receiving a free B4 School Check, meaning most children are getting their hearing, eyesight, height, weight, and oral health assessments, as well as comprehensive health and development checks.

These checks help to give children the best start at school by identifying and addressing any potential health or developmental problems at an early stage.

This year, 92 per cent of four-year-olds received this free comprehensive health and development check.

That’s up from 91 per cent last year, and means over 58,600 children and their families have benefited from this free service in the last year.

The check helps families to connect with any additional support services they might need before their child starts school.

KickStart has now served five million breakfasts across the country since the Government expanded the programme in 2013.

Ensuring children are healthy and focused is important to help them achieve at school.

That’s why we’ve also invested $9.5 million in the KickStart Breakfast programme.

This investment expanded the programme from two to five mornings per week and to include all primary and secondary schools that want or need it, regardless of decile.

KickStart has now served five million breakfasts across the country since the Government expanded the programme in 2013.

Schools say through KickStart they are seeing improvements in the health and

Public Achievement Information released for 2014 shows primary school achievement in writing and mathematics has increased in 15 of New Zealand’s 16 local body regions since 2011.

The proportion of 18-yearolds with NCEA Level 2 has also risen in every region.

The breakdown shows that between 2011 and 2014 the percentage of 18-year-olds

with NCEA Level 2 rose by between 3.8 per cent and 18.4 per cent on a regional basis.

In Rangitata 81.4 per cent of students are passing NCEA Level 2, an increase of 0.8 per cent and 78.4 per cent of students leaving school have NCEA Level 2, an increase of 2 per cent.

This is setting our kids up to go on to achieve in tertiary education and the workplace.

Shooter had mental illness John Russell Houser was deeply troubled long before he shot 11 people in a movie theater in Louisiana, but decades of mental problems didn’t keep him from buying the handgun he used.

Despite public signs of mental illness — most importantly, a Georgia judge’s order committing him to mental health treatment against his will as a danger to himself and others in 2008 — Houser was able to walk into an Alabama shop six years later and buy a .40-caliber handgun.

It was the same weapon Houser used to kill two people and wound nine others before killing himself at a Thursday showing of Trainwreck. Three people remained hospitalised Saturday.

Court records reviewed by The Associated Press strongly suggest Houser should have been reported to the state and federal databases used to keep people with serious mental illnesses from buying firearms, legal experts said.

“It sure does seem like something failed,” said Judge Susan Tate, who presides over a probate court in Georgia and has studied issues relating to weapons and the mentally ill. “I have no idea how he was able to get a firearm.”

Houser never should have been able to buy a gun, said Sheriff Heath Taylor in Russell County, Alabama, whose office denied him a concealed weapons permit in 2006 based on arson and domestic violence allegations, even though the victims declined to pursue charges.

No evidence has surfaced of any criminal conviction that would have kept Houser from passing the background check required for many gun purchases. Federal law does generally

The Special Olympic World Games kicked off Saturday in Los Angeles as 6500 athletes from 165 countries streamed in to cheers and roars. The athletes will participate in 25 sports over nine days, ranging from weightlifting to the triathlon. Applause greeted the athletes, including a tiny contingent from Afghanistan.

It was the largest gathering of athletes in Los Angeles since the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Suicide bomber A suicide bomber attacked a popular night spot in northern Cameroon on Saturday evening, killing at least 10 people only days after Islamic militants were blamed for another attack on the town that left at least 20 dead, the governor said. Midjiyawa Bakari, governor of the far northern region of Cameroon, told The Associated Press that the attacker detonated the explosives in the popular Pont Vert neighborhood in Maroua.

“We are still counting the dead and wounded,” Bakari said. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Islamic militants from the Boko Haram group have been blamed for scores of attacks in the region this year.

prohibit the purchase or possession of a firearm by anyone who has ever been involuntarily committed for mental health treatment.

That’s what happened to Houser in 2008 after his family accused him of threatening behavior, warning authorities that he had a history of bipolar disorder and was making ominous statements. His wife removed his guns and the family persuaded a judge to issue a protective order keeping him away once he left the hospital.

At that point, court officials should have reported Houser’s involuntary mental commit-

ment to the Georgia database that feeds the FBI’s background check system, which provides for a delay of up to three days when records suggest a buyer may be ineligible.

When Houser tried to buy his gun on February 26, 2014, the system only briefly delayed his purchase, according to a federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. The seller was advised the following day that the sale could proceed.

It was not clear Saturday whether the judge who authorised authorities to detain Houser in 2008 filed a report

with the Georgia Crime Information Centre, which keeps about 5000 records on people who cannot buy guns because they have been judged insane, involuntarily hospitalised or legally depend on someone else to manage their affairs.

Like many states, Georgia has a highly decentralised court system, spread over 159 counties. Experts have long worried that probate judges are not reporting every mental health commitment.

This March, Kellie Houser filed for divorce, saying their relationship was irretrievably broken.

Daughter watches as shark mauls father A woman watched her father being mauled to death by a large shark on Saturday while the pair were diving off the Australian island state of Tasmania, police said.

The adult woman had returned to their boat with scallops that the pair had collected then became concerned that her father, in his late 40s, had not surfaced after her, Inspector David Wiss told reporters in the state capital of Hobart.

“His daughter became worried and went down and checked

on her father,” Wiss said. “She saw a very large shark. She saw her father being attacked by the shark.”

The attack happened off the east coast near where a 4 1/2-metre-long great white shark was seen on Friday, government ranger Peter Lingard told The Examiner newspaper.

The last fatal shark attack off the Australian coast occurred in February, when Japanese tourist Tadashi Nakahara, 41, lost both his legs to a great white shark 3 to 4 metres long while surfing

at Ballina, 1600km north of the scene of Saturday’s attack.

Saturday’s attack occurred as Australian professional surfer Mick Fanning made his first return to the water since he fought off a large shark during a World Surf League competition in South Africa last weekend.

The three-time world champion went surfing alone at his hometown of Tweed Heads, 700km north of Sydney. He had contemplated giving up the sport after he was knocked off

his board by a large shark at Jeffreys Bay. That attack was televised live around the world. He survived unscathed.

“First surf back. Feels so good,” Fanning wrote under a silhouetted photo of himself looking out to the ocean, which he posted on Instagram.

Sharks are common off Australia’s beaches, but fatal attacks are rare. The country has averaged fewer than two deadly attacks per year in recent decades.

Saudi-led coalition airstrikes hit a residential area in a quiet Red Sea town in Yemen, killing at least 120 people in the deadliest strike against civilians since the March offensive began, security and medical officials said. Hours later, the coalition unexpectedly announced that it would start a five-day humanitarian pause on yesterday, just before midnight.

The airstrikes late Friday hit workers’ housing for a power plant in Mokha, flattening some of the buildings to the ground, the officials said. A fire erupted in the area, charring many of the corpses, including children, women and elderly people. Wahib Mohammed, an eyewitness and area resident, said some of the bodies were torn apart by the force of the blast and buried in a mass grave.

Fire at Strip A fire at a high-rise hotel swimming pool sent large plumes of black smoke high above the Las Vegas Strip but left most guests unscathed yesterday. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to gain control of the blaze that broke out on the 14th floor of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas hotel, Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said.

Nurse arrested Melbourne nurse Adam Brookman has been charged with terrorismrelated offences after returning home from Syria. Brookman, 39, was charged yesterday with one count of knowingly providing support to Islamic State and one count of performing services with the intention of supporting a person to engage in a hostile activity in a foreign state. The father-of-five flew into Sydney under police escort on Friday night after turning himself in to Turkish authorities last week. He is expected to appear in a Melbourne court today.

Three days in Shanghai starts now

I

t is 8am on a Friday in Jing’An – the central district of Shanghai, packed with gleaming hotels and shopping malls – and already the pace on the streets is frenetic.

I am trying to cross a busy main road but even super-sized traffic lights, a green man and a zebra crossing hold no sway against drivers who seem to see pedestrians as an annoyance best ignored.

I make it across unscathed and head for the Jing’An Park, a leafy haven where pensioners are huddled around mahjong boards and a group of teens are attempting to get a drone camera into the air.

It is 20 years since I have been to China and, boy, is it clear things have changed.

The number of foreigners visiting the world’s largest city (now home to 24 million) has grown significantly since short-term visa restrictions were relaxed in 2013, allowing residents of certain countries to now stay in China for up to 72 hours without a visa.

So how do you maximise a three-day stay in this vast metropolis?

While I could happily gawp at the stunning view from my 17th floor room at the Puli Hotel all day, I am keen to explore old-school Shanghai.

So after my stroll, I make a beeline for Tian Zi Fang, where the narrow criss-crossing streets are lined with low rise “Lane” houses built in the 1930s.

The area now has a market feel, with former residential houses mostly transformed into shops selling silk clothing, loose leaf tea, cartoonish trinkets and other tourist-friendly goods.

With the help of my iPhone calculator, I manage to haggle down the price of some silver jewellery and a traditional silk Cheongsam dress.

Ready for a breather, I make my way over to the picturesque Yu Garden to watch koi carp and turtles paddling in jade green ponds, as I walk across the Zigzag Bridge to reach Huxinting Teahouse and a refreshing jasmine brew.

Later that night, I head out in search of the one sight I am most excited about.

Shanghai’s space-age skyscrapers were used to represent futuristic Los Angeles in the Spike Jonze film Her, I have been dying to experience the vertiginous views myself.

The best place to do so? It has got to be the Bund, the wide riverside boulevard opposite the Pudong skyline that is to Shanghai what the Southbank is to London.

I stroll happily along the riverfront as the sun is setting, and by the time I have finished my first mojito at the seventh floor POP terrace bar at the top of Three On The Bund, Pudong is lit up in all its neon glory.

After dinner downstairs at Mercato – home to the best Italian food I have found east of Italy – I take a taxi (they are cheap as long as you make sure the driver puts the meter on) to glitzy club Myst for more cocktails.

And dancing. And more cocktails.

Head pounding, I drag myself out of bed the next morn-

ing and remember I am booked on a street food tour. Described accurately by American guide Jamie as “four hours of eating”, it is just what the doctor ordered.

We wander through the avenues of the historic French Concession, stopping to sample all kinds of delicious hangoverbusting dumplings, my favourite being the soft white steamed buns filled with sweet, sticky black sesame paste.

I spend the afternoon walking off my enormous lunch and perusing the works of local artists in the cool M50 art district.

This was before heading back to the Bund for dinner and one last glimpse of that irresistible vista.

Not long before midnight, I watch the lights of Pudong go out one by one, but that does not mean this city is going to sleep.

Far from it. I have got 12 hours until my plane leaves and I intend to make the most of them.

In brief Sharks beat Dogs Cronulla have cemented their place in the NRL top eight after shaking off their off-field woes to record a 18-16 win over Canterbury yesterday. The 19,005-strong crowd at Belmore Sports Ground made their feelings known when the Sharks were awarded a contentious penalty goal in front with six minutes on the clock after Valentine Holmes was hit late as he took a shot at field goal by Josh Reynolds. Holmes converted the penalty which pushed the scores out to 18-10. Ultimately, for the second time in as many weeks, young gun Holmes proved the match-winner, scoring what was the decisive try in the 60th minute before sealing it with his penalty conversion.

Black holds top-of-table spot Mid Canterbury’s senior men’s hockey sides experienced a narrow win, and a crushing defeat, on Saturday.

And with just two games left before the semi-finals, both of the Wakanui sides will be looking to finish the round-robin strongly before what is shaping up to be an all-Wakanui semifinal on August 15.

Wakanui Black remains at the

top of the table after squeezing past one of the competition’s bottom teams – Timaru Boys’ High School’s first XI – 2-1 in Timaru on Saturday, while back in Ashburton clubmates Wakanui Blue suffered a heavy 8-0 loss at the hands of Cambridge.

At the moment, Cambridge is lying third and Wakanui Blue is fourth on the competition leader-board, with Tainui

taking the second spot.

TBHS are in fifth spot, but well back, meaning it’s all about the top four with the finals looming.

It’s a similar story in the women’s draw, with the two Mid Canterbury teams currently sitting in first and fourth, with a big gap back to the fifth placed team. That means an all Mid-Canterbury semi-final is

looming in the women’s competition too.

Hampstead are unbeaten this season and have a big lead on the points table, and on Saturday they recorded their second draw in a row, this time 1-all to second placed Timaru Girls’ High School.

Meanwhile, fourth placed Hampstead/Collegians lost 1-0 to third placed Cambridge.

Warriors look to cope without Johnson

Star playmaker Shaun Johnson will miss the rest of the season after suffering an an-

kle injury in the 32-12 loss to Manly in Auckland on Saturday night.

The mercurial half-back’s wretched luck occurred in the act of scoring a 25th-minute try that brought the Warriors back into the match.

Johnson got his left leg trapped in the tackle as he

forced the ball down. Tuimoala Lolohea’s conversion made the score 6-6 and it remained that way until halftime.

But the Sea Eagles ran away with it in the second spell, overcoming their own injury woes that left them with no reserves for the final quarter.

The Warriors will finish the

round inside the top eight, and Friend believes they can stay there even without Johnson’s magic.

“For sure - we’ve trained all season with people in different positions so we all know the game plan,” he said.

There was nobody more relieved to get out of Penrith with two competition points than Canberra coach Ricky Stuart who broke his long run of outs against the Panthers yesterday. The Raiders scored a thrilling 34-24 victory over Penrith at Pepper Stadium to keep in touch with the top eight with six rounds of the NRL season remaining. For Stuart, it was his first win over the Panthers in six years, ending a losing run that stretched back to when he was in charge of Cronulla in 2009.

“Playing at Penrith Park is always tough ... it’s a really important two points when you come away from here,” Stuart said. “There’s not many times I’ve come away from here with two points.”

Eels under pressure Parramatta coach Brad Arthur believes his side has dealt admirably with the off-field distractions that have plagued them throughout the NRL season. The Eels’ finals hopes go on the line against North Queensland tonight in the concluding match of round 20, with the club under siege again over allegations of irregular payments to players outside the salary cap. The NRL has launched an investigation into claims aired last week that undisclosed third party payments have been made to Parramatta players including Will Hopoate and Jarryd Hayne. Japan looking shaky Japan may not turn out not to be the great bet World Rugby and Sanzar say it is. It’s looking a bit shaky at the moment — a bit of a loose cannon no one thought it possibly could be given the size of the economy. No one in authority is going to admit their faith has been shaken by events in recent weeks, but it has. From being a trump card, Japan is shaping now as a joker but not one is generating many laughs. Everyone was blindsided by the announcement that the National Stadium is not going to be built in time to host any games at the 2019 World Cup. Just like that, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the forecast costs of the proposed build had gotten out of hand and the project was to be scrapped. Perhaps that shouldn’t have been a surprise, as other projects designed by architect Zaha Hadid have run into similar problems. World Rugby might be wondering if there are other nasty surprises to come.

Methven sets up double act Breaking through the Celtic defence out wide during the senior B rugby semi-finals on Saturday was Methven’s Thomas Cochrane.

Methven will feature in both Mid Canterbury rugby finals this weekend after the club’s B side won their semi-final. Methven travelled to Celtic for one semi-final and came away with a 23-10 win, while in the other semi-final Southern defeated Tinwald 247. Methven and Southern will now play off for the Centennial Cup on Saturday, followed by the Methven senior side taking on Rakaia for senior rugby’s prestigious Watters Cup. ABs win ‘brutal’ contest

By Patrick Mckendry This brutal test against the Springboks at Ellis Park was going the same way as last year’s defeat for the All Blacks until their courage and determination in defending their line with 14 men was rewarded with an extraordinary piece of luck.

With Sam Whitelock sinbinned due to a ruck offence deemed cynical by referee Jerome Garces, the All Blacks had to survive two scrums on their line with a numerical disadvantage against a South African team determined to increase their 20-17 lead.

The All Blacks did it, just, before Vincent Koch joined Jannie du Plessis on the sideline through injury, meaning the Boks didn’t have a specialist tighthead prop, although loosehead Trevor Nyakane has started at tighthead this season.

According to World Rugby regulations, teams must name their loosehead and tighthead props before kick-off and if both players in a position are injured, scrums are no longer contested.

For an All Black team on their last legs on the highveld, it was manna from heaven, but, after a sequence of events which severely disadvantaged his team, Boks coach Heyneke Meyer agreed with Garces’ decision.

“I support his call as both our tightheads were injured and the law has to be followed, as it is there to protect the players,” said Meyer.

With the All Blacks guaranteed their ball and able to clear their line, the pressure was eased.

Job done, win secured, three brilliant tries scored, one victory from another Rugby Championship title.

It might looked cut and dried on paper, but the All Blacks had to go to a new level against the Boks yesterday in order to

avenge last year’s thrilling defeat.

In reflecting on a test which saw a successful debut for No10 Lima Sopoaga and injuries to key players Ma’a Nonu and Brodie Retallick, Steve Hansen praised his team’s mental fortitude to fight back from a below-par first half and scoreboard disadvantage late in the game in a test his skipper

McCaw called “pretty brutal”.

In particular, Hansen paid credit to the determination to keep the Boks out as they went in for the kill.

As he said, the All Blacks defended as if their lives depended on it.

“We missed a tackle on the South African line and ended up back on ours and we defended our hearts out,” he said.

“We showed a lot of courage.

If they had scored then I think it would have been very difficult to come back from that.

“But we showed the mental fortitude and physical ability to keep getting up after making tackles, forced a turnover, and unfortunately one of their guys was injured.”

Hansen added of the referee’s decision to go to uncontestable scrums: “No one in the world has three tighthead props in their side so they had to go to golden oldie scrums.

“We were down to seven versus eight and that would have been a tough spot to get out of so I think that was a massive turning point.”

Sopoaga, who missed two kicks at goal but kicked the important conversion for McCaw’s try to push the margin out to four points and then nailed a penalty on fulltime, was expecting a baptism of fire and he got it.

However, after a frantic start he found his feet nicely and should be happy with his lot.

His run for Ben Smith’s try was superb and he tackled his heart out too.

He called his experience “unbelievable”, with backs coach Ian Foster saying: “To stay on for 80 minutes and to kick some important goals near the end - he’ll learn a lot about how to control our game from - NZME today.”

Wallabies eye championship

By Melissa Woods Australia have set up a winner-takes-all Rugby Championship showdown with New Zealand after thrashing Argentina 34-9 in Mendoza.

The Wallabies moved to the top of the ladder, ahead of the All Blacks on points differential with both teams unbeaten in the opening two rounds.

The title will be decided at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on August 8, with the home side looking for their first trophy since 2011.

Skipper Stephen Moore said his team watched the All Blacks fight back to overcome South Africa before their own game and knew it would be massive challenge.

“They were fantastic and they showed why they’re the best team in the world at the moment so it’s a huge challenge for us,” Moore said.

“There’s plenty to work on so that game’s going to be a big test for us.”

Despite the impressive final scoreline, the Wallabies only led 8-6 at halftime.

A 60th-minute try scored by reserve lock Dean Mumm, who shrugged off three defenders to touch down, proved decisive. Kurtley Beale also came off the bench to light up the attack, with the Wallabies snatching the vital bonus point after Tevita Kuridrani and Adam AshleyCooper crossed in the dying minutes.

Sopoaga justifies selection One piece of unruffled thinking from Lima Sopoaga explained the All Black selectors decision to promote the young five eighths.

He took an inside pass from Ma’a Nonu and put his foot down in an arching 40m run before high-balling a pass to Ben Smith for the try which kept the visitors in this absorbing test.

You often hear players and coaches talk about the best players being ice-cool in a test inferno, making the right decisions as the squeeze goes on.

Sopoaga earned plenty of ticks as much of what he did on debut at Ellis Park continued the strong form the national panel liked throughout the Super 15.

He took a heavy hit early but bounced back with such a strong showing he will have created further World Cup headaches for the selectors.

He varied his game, organised strongly, kicked well for position and goal to keep the heat on rivals Daniel Carter, Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade.

In the end it took another piece of calm thinking to deliver an All Black victory which looked to be slipping away as the Boks racheted up the third quarter heat.

Captain Richie McCaw called for a lineout rather than a kick at goal eight minutes from time and scored from a planned move which was a variation on Tony Woodcock’s try in the 2011 World Cup. The All Blacks were often knocked off their stride by a fiery Bok team but their ability to think and produce under pressure shows how logic usually beats emotion.

Bowlers miss target Ashburton’s mixed four team fell short of what would have been the district’s second national mixed fours title at the weekend.

The tournament was played at Wanganui, and it was taken out by North Taranaki. It was close though, with four of the eight teams finishing with eight points after the round robin. The Ashburton team of Grant Wilson (skip), Michael Lawson, Chris Talbot and Hazel Mitchell wasn’t one of them, eventually coming seventh.

World Cup draw

Final lives up to top billing Seedings went to plan in the top grade at the Celtic Squash Club’s annual Ray McBeth Memorial tournament over the weekend, but not without some serious speed bumps on the way.

Top seeded Corey Hastie from the Ashburton club had his hands full from his very first game against Celtic’s Billy Nolan, before eventually getting past Rakaia’s Matt Speedy to make the A grade final.

Lee Butcher, a B2 graded player from Mosgiel, was second seed, and had to repel a spirited five-set challenge from the host club’s John McDonnell in their semi-final before facing Hastie in the final.

That match-up didn’t disappoint, and a full gallery watched a superb display of attacking and counter-attacking

squash, as both players lifted their games for the occasion.

Hastie looked to be bothered by a cramp issue late in the match, but kept it under control and produced some superb winners to deny the visiting southerner victory, in a contest that went the distance with Hastie finally getting home 16-14 in the fifth set.

McDonnell beat Speedy in four high-powered sets to take third spot, while Ash Flannery was too good for Ashburton clubmate Garry Mayne in the plate, and Celtic’s Rob Beale beat Nolan in the special plate.

It was a host club’s final in the B grade, and with Mick Hooper and Paul Cousins knowing each other’s game well, it was no surprise that a five-set match ensued.

Cousins eventually took the

honours, but had to endure some marathon rallies to get there.

Sam Harrison and Chris O’Reilly battled it out for third, with Harrison winning in four, and Jock O’Connor defeated Pete Blacklow for the plate.

Collegiate’s Todd Cameron proved the burglar in the C grade, getting past Mitch Sim (Methven) in a marathon semifinal to set up a final with Logan Ford.

Cameron proved too good on the day for his clubmate, having Ford covered all over the court.

Sim took third place from John Woolf, while Gary Casey was the plate winner in straight sets over Nathan Forbes.

Youth took centre stage in the D grade, with Jarod Hopwood and Devon Flannery making the final at the expense

of top seeds Donna Brown and Nieman.

Hopwood was too strong for his rival and Ashburton clubmate Flannery, but the younger player will certainly be making his mark on the squash court in future years.

Brown and Nieman, as they invariably seem to do, met again on court, this time to decide third spot, and it went Nieman’s way, while Celtic’s Di Ness and Marie Kennedy were plate finalists, Ness winning in three.

The tournament was the last of the series in this area this year, with only the Mid Canterbury Championships, which will be held at the Collegiate courts, on August 7-8, remaining on the schedule, with the interclub competition finals night a week later.

Ill Froome ‘died a thousand deaths’

By BarnaBy Chesterman Chris Froome says he felt like he was “dying a thousand deaths” on the final climb to Alpe d’Huez while all but securing a second Tour de France victory.

The 30-year-old Briton revealed after the penultimate stage that he’d been struggling with illness for days having held off a stirring fightback by Nairo Quintana.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal hailed his new-look strikeforce on Saturday after the Premier League giants scored a morale-boosting 3-1 friendly victory over Barcelona. Wayne Rooney scored the opening goal before second half strikes from Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj settled an entertaining game in front of 68,416 at the Levi’s Stadium, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. A satisfied van Gaal hailed the burgeoning attacking partnership between Rooney and new signing Memphis Depay following the win.

“I won’t be lying if I say that there were a few moments when I thought: ‘this will be tough here’,” said the Team Sky leader.

“But we were getting time checks every few minutes and it was comforting to see the gap wasn’t suddenly jumping up by 30 seconds; it was moving up by five or 10 seconds at a time so it was manageable.

“I was on my limits, it felt like

I was dying a thousand deaths today but being with my teammates makes it a little bit more manageable and I had a little left to do that last kilometre and limit those losses.”

Quintana had launched a last gasp attack on the 13.8km hors category and iconic climb to

the finish of the 110.5km 20th stage from Modane.

And as he eked out an increasing gap to Froome, eating into the 2min 38sec deficit with which he’d started the day, the Briton admitted he was worried the Tour was getting away from him.

“It really was tough today but at the finish it was incredible, an incredible feeling and emotion,” said Froome.

Riccarton trip confirmed Cambridge trainer Ben Foote received the best possible result to end of his mid-winter holiday in Bali when his honest mare Illuminati scored an impressive win at Ruakaka on Saturday.

Foote had to settle with listening to a commentary of the open handicap 1400 metre contest but admitted he got fairly excited as the mare charged home from midfield to account for some handy opposition and book her spot in this weekend’s Gr. 3 Star 118th Winter Cup at Riccarton.

“We could only listen to the race and it sounded as though she may have got too far off them during the run as there was a stack of speed on early,” he said.

“When the commentator said she was starting to come into it I got a bit excited although when you can’t see the race you can’t really tell how they are travelling.

“It was a great feeling when we heard she had won and I did manage to see a replay of the race about an hour later.

“As it turned out that early speed probably was in her favour as she settled nicely and we know she can finish hard off that sort of speed.”

Flying Fox in line for first title Ryan Fox is in pole position for his first title on the Challenge Tour after a quality third round yesterday.

Fox was leading the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge by three shots after a third round 68, a round which saw him mix four birdies with three bogies and an eagle.

After the first two rounds of the French tournament saw players shoot low scores, yesterday’s conditions were tougher for low scoring, with Fox’s three-under round being the third best of the day, and increasing his lead on top from one shot to three.

After an up-and-down opening seven holes had Fox at even par, the in-form Kiwi eagled the eighth, before having a solid back nine to boost his advantage to three over Frenchman Thomas Linard.

American Connor Arendell and Swede Steven Jeppesen are tied in third place a further two shots back.

In Scotland, Lydia Ko slipped back into a share of third at the Scottish Open.

After leading the tournament after an opening round four-under 68, Ko hit a 73 - struggling on the back nine with four bogies.

Norway’s Suzann Pettersen was leading at six-under par, while England’s Holly Clyburn sits in second at fourunder.

On the PGA Tour, Tim Wilkinson has leapt up 24 spots after a third round 69 at the RBC Canadian Open.

The three-under round has moved the Kiwi left-hander into a share of 48th, while fellow Kiwi Steven Alker slumped 43 spots after a five-over 77.

DEATHS MCCARTHY, Edith Margaret (Fay)(nee Goodman) – Peacefully in the loyal care of Margaret Wilson Rest Home, Timaru. On July 26, 2015 in her 87th year. Dearly loved wife of the late Bill. Very much loved mother and motherin-law of Wayne and Glenda (Ashburton), Graham and Diane (Blenheim), Craig and Kaye (Timaru) and motherin-law of Adrienne McCarthy (Wellington). Adored nana of Brad and Laura, Lacey, Alicia and Campbell, Kelsi and Brent and great grandmother of Liam and Jack. Loved sister of the late Bill Goodman, Joyce and the late Frank Hawke (Timaru), Clare and the late Barney Gray (Timaru) Ron and Beth Goodman (Napier), Ray and the late Dot Goodman (Ashburton), and loved sister-in-law of Joy and Merv Mein (Christchurch) and loved aunty Fay of all her nieces and nephews. Ferns struggle to put away SA South Africa have provided Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu with a better guide of the relative strengths of her different combinations ahead of the World Cup, and she probably didn’t get the answers she would have liked.

The visitors gave the Ferns an almighty hurry-up in the first half of last night’s test in Hamilton, in what was New Zealand’s penultimate hit-out before they head to the World Cup in Sydney.

The Ferns made just one change to their starting line-up from their 91-31 win over Fiji in Porirua last week, with Jodi Brown given the nod at goal attack ahead of Maria Tutaia, who was rested from the match after suffering an ankle tweak in training over the weekend.

Brown would have likely started last night regardless of Tutaia’s fitness, having impressed with her delivery of ball into the circle against Fiji. The veteran shooter further pushed her case last night, finishing with a

handy 32/39 return, while Mes netted 36/43 but was expensive in other areas, picking up three offensive penalties.

Meanwhile, down the other end of the court, Lenize Potgieter put on a shooting clinic, netting 39/43 to pick up the player of the match award.

With less than two weeks before their World Cup opener, last night was all about meeting their own targets - both individual and collective - whilst continuing to test out new strategies on both attack and defence.
