Baring Sq church may yet be saved

Ashburton’s new civic centre and library could be built in Baring Square East, without demolishing the historic Methodist Church.

The site is the first choice of Opus Architecture for the rebuild of the council’s administration building and the district’s library, but it could mean the demolition of both the church and the old county building.

In a workshop yesterday on the rebuild options, Ashburton District councillors were told the church site was in three ti-

tles and it might be possible to buy two of these only, leaving the church untouched.

Proceeds from the sale of the two blocks of land could fund the church’s earthquake repair work.

When Opus identified Baring Square east as its number one choice for the new buildings, there was an outcry from people opposed to the church’s demolition.

Lights, cameras, no action

New traffic lights on the intersection of State Highway One and South Street will not be operational until later next week, NZ Transport Agency says.

NZTA had planned to flick the switch at 11am yesterday and workmen were at the site to do the job, however the lights flashed briefly and that was that.

Those who had gathered in the vicinity hoping to see the new lights go live met with disappointment. Bewildered, the onlookers eventually wandered off.

Later in the day NZTA issued a statement saying the tactile pavers “were not in place”. The yellow pavers provide tactile and visual information to assist blind and visually impaired pedestrians to negotiate crossings.

The new lights were funded

by Progressive Enterprises at a cost of about $1 million, to

facilitate access to the company’s new Countdown Supermarket.

Christchurch-based City Care workers been working on the intersection and signals since the end of last year.

The pavement alongside the intersection has been completely rebuilt and the intersection’s lanes reconfigured.

A traffic camera installed at the intersection will be monitored from the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre.

When the plan for the lights was first tabled, a number of Ashburton residents voiced their concerns about the logistics of having another set of lights in such close proximity to a controlled railway crossing and the lights on the intersection of Moore and West Streets.

West Street is subject to frequent traffic backlogs, in particular ahead of public holidays and there are fears the new lights will compound the problem.

A day out for old-timers Gretchen Hart and John Thompson, will be hitting the road in their Triumph 2500 TC saloon tomorrow to take part in the Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s 48th annual rally.

Commencing from the clubrooms, two routes are on offer, including a long course over 72 miles and a shorter route over 45 miles.

Club captain David Oakley said members who have registered will be taking part in a variety of interesting vehicles.

Baring Square church may yet be saved From P1 When Opus principal architect Colin Corsbie presented his final report on the project, out of three site options and in spite of public opposition, he still ticked the church and county building sites as choice number one.

After two rounds of consultation, the community did not agree, putting Eastfield on Cass Street as its number one choice but the late option of a split land deal could change that.

The library and administration centre will be rebuilt because both need significant work to bring them up to the required post earthquakes building code. Reports indicate it will be more cost effective to rebuild rather than refurbish.

The final site options were agreed by the previous council with the intention that the final choice to be voted on by the new council team.

Options in the mix in order according to Opus ranking chart are Baring Square East, Eastfield, the current administration site on Bar-

ing Square West and the Balmoral Hall site. The proposal is to co-locate an administration centre and library on the same site to reduce build and operating costs.

While the previous council had already cut options to build the two complexes over two sites, during yesterday’s workshop attempts were made by councillor Selwyn Price to bring two sites back into play.

“I just don’t get that we’re bound by public consultation when we didn’t ask people if they wanted it on one site or two,” Price said.

He was supported by councillors Diane Rawlinson and Lynette Lovett who said they were not aware two sites had been in the original site option mix.

They said the numbers responding during the two rounds of consultation were not high enough to be a good indication of public opinion. Mayor Donna Favel agreed.

“The election changed a lot of faces around the table. If this council wants to overturn this decision

then surely we should have the right,” she said.

Councillor Russell Ellis was quick to challenge the mayor, saying overturning a council decision was not as simple as simply saying you wanted it changed.

‘I don’t want to be swayed by the silent majority. We’ve done that before and it’s cost us millions of dollars,” he said.

Council business support manager Paul Brake said that while feedback was important, the decision making process was not a “popularity vote”.

He reminded councillors that the workshop was about clarification, information gathering and understanding the issues involved. It was not about making decisions.

“When you vote you’re making a long-term decision, a decision for future generations and you need to make your decisions with an open mind after this workshop when you have all the facts and all the information,” he said.

They will vote on February 23.

Retirement beckons for busy business couple

After 25 years of engraving, cutting keys and locksmithing, Ian and Jenny Knight are putting down their tools.

Masterguard Fire & Security Ltd have purchased the locksmithing and engraving section of the Knights’ business.

The Knights are still operating their framing business from their Creek Road premises, but have said the draw of retirement is strong and will be soon looking to move on from that side of the business as well.

Ian said he started the business from scratch after Smith’s DIY, who Ian was an employee of, shut down. Ian acquired their key cutting machine and never looked back.

The business was based on Tancred Street for a long period until earthquake damage in 2011 forced a move to Creek Road.

At one point, Ian said he had acquired eight key cutting machines as he believed it was important to provide the best service to his customers.

Retirement is something Ian and Jenny are both looking forward to.

“We have a list of activities planned as long as your arm,” said Jenny. “We have short, medium and long-term plans for the future.”

Walking all the walking tracks and cycling all the cycling tracks are on the agenda as well as getting away in the caravan.

The couple say they will have more time for hobbies such as gold prospecting, blacksmithing and sewing, a skill Jenny has used to make ballerina tutus for 25 years.

Jenny and Ian Knight are slowly winding down Knights Locksmiths after 25 years in business.

Liquor outlet ‘would create jobs’

A new Super Liquor store in Methven would provide three jobs and support its surrounding community, says franchisee Harjit Singh.

Singh and his wife Shereen are directors of Nekita Enterprises Limited, which already owns 12 bottle stores and one hotel in Canterbury, nine of which are Super Liquor stores, two of which are in Ashburton.

He is applying to Super Liquor to open a store in Methven, which would be located on Main Street in a building currently occupied by Red Cross.

Singh said yesterday the store would provide two full-time jobs and one part-time job for locals. It was also a tradition with the company for its bottle stores to support their surrounding communities, by sponsoring groups such as sports clubs.

Singh believed a Super Liquor in Methven would also benefit consumers by bringing a full range of products at competitive prices to the town.

Super Liquor yesterday confirmed it is in discussions with Nekita Enterprises about an application to establish a bottle shop in Methven.

Super Liquor Holdings Limited national operations manager Greg Hoar said he also believed

residents and tourists would appreciate a Super Liquor store that offered a full range of liquor products. Current legislation prohibited supermarkets from selling alcohol, other than beer, cider and wine. A summer afternoon in the park turned to terror after an elderly man was attacked – suffering a cut to the neck – while playing with his grandchildren. The man, aged 72, was struck by a weapon described by witnesses as “similar to a knife” in an unprovoked incident at Little Rangitoto Reserve in Remuera about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Clark steps down from UN role Helen Clark may not have fulfilled all her ambitions in her eight years at the United Nations Development Programme.

But when she leaves her post in April it will be with the satisfaction of knowing she made a difference and that she leaves it a better place than when she started.

It was not unexpected. She will have completed two four-year terms in April by the time she goes.

She dragged the UNDP into the 21st century.

She introduced greater efficiencies and transparency into the development agency that spends $US billion a year of donor governments’ money – a move that was naturally met with some resistance from within.

And she embraced the digital age and social media with the vigour of a 26-year-old rather than a 66-year-old to let the world know about its work.

She has 68,000 followers on Twitter and is active on Facebook and Instagram.

It was a great source of pride

for her that the UNDP organisation was ranked No 1 for the past two years in the Aid Transparency Index.

It was one of her strong suits in her bid to become Secretary General of the United Nations, but not strong enough.

The failure to get the top UN job was undoubtedly one of the greatest disappointments in her political career – the others being missing out on Cabinet in 1984 (she had to wait three years); missing out on leading Labour to power in 1996 (she had to wait another three years) and being voted out in 2008, after leading Labour in Government for nine years.

She was in the right place at the right time and in many ways was the right person. But her no-nonsense style of leadership was no match for the personal charms of the former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, to whom she has given her notice.

Gang boss blames ‘racism’ for P drug plague A senior gang leader has lodged a claim with the Waitangi Tribunal arguing “racist” government policy is the reason so many Maori are addicted to P. Rex Timu is the president of the Hastings chapter of the Mongrel Mob and banned P among his members. He claims the numbers of those using the drug has fallen from 80 to 10 per cent.

No government department, agency or programme has achieved the same success, according to the 50-year-old, who said the nationwide strategy to combat the “P epidemic plaguing Maori communities” was failing.

“This claim is about the racism (which is rife in New Zealand) including institutional and in-

Rex Timu terpersonal racism, that actively prevents the Hastings Mob and Maori from receiving the resources and funding that they need to achieve the type of results that Rex Timu has achieved, on a national scale,” the Waitangi

Tribunal claim says. Timu points to the Waka Moemoea Trust, of which he is a member, established with the idea that “gangs are the best people to get gangs off P”.

The charitable trust offers health, education, employment and housing services to help “hard-to-reach families”.

“Unfortunately, any funding to the trust has had to be kept low key because the idea of the trust receiving public money to address the issue of P within gangs was not politically palatable,” Timu wrote in his submissions.

Public records show Waka Moemoea received $812,000 in government grants or contracts in 2014/2015 financial year, and

posted a $129,000 deficit.

Timu pointed to comments posted on blogs as evidence the Mob was “prejudiced by institutional and interpersonal racism on a daily basis”.

“They are viewed as ‘thugs on drugs’, criminals etc and have found it extremely difficult to access services for those members affected by P, including their children and mokopuna,” Timu wrote.

“They are turned away because of who they are and how they look, yet just like all other people, they too have dreams, ambitions and hopes for themselves including their wives, children and mokopuna but the racism and bigotry they encounter every day

prevents them from living full, rich and healthy lives.”

Timu said the Crown had a duty to address the methamphetamine epidemic among Maori, including the Mongrel Mob. “If the Crown cannot adequately address the P epidemic, then the Crown must ensure that there are adequate services available to help those affected by P that do not turn people such as the Mob away, simply because of who they are.”

The claim asks the Waitangi Tribunal for a number of recommendations, including a finding that the New Zealand health system is “inherently racist” and seeks a review of the policy decision-making process.

Great white encounter chilling A 10-year-old surfer has had an amazing brush with death after gliding his board over a massive great white shark.

Eden Hasson was catching the last of the light while surfing at Samurai Beach in NSW on Tuesday evening when he got the fright of his life, the Daily Mail reported.

The young surfer said he didn’t realise the dark shape he saw in the sea was a great white shark as he enjoyed the last of the day’s waves.

“When I took off I thought I saw something and when I went to do the first snap off the top I hit something and I thought it was seaweed,” he said.

“Then when [Dad] called me in I thought it must be a shark because there was a big school of fish we saw.”

His father, lifetime surfer Chris Hasson, was standing on the rocks taking photographs of his son when he saw a dark shadow in the water.

“Check it’s mouth,” Mr Hasson told his friends via Facebook. “It’s rolled over having a good look at his yummy yellow new wetsuit.”

Hasson said the extraordinary photograph came about as Eden rode the wave to the beach.

He quickly zoomed in and was shocked at the image he saw.

“Eden was half way out and I called everyone in. I showed them the photo and everyone was in awe laughing,” Hasson said, “One of the surfers said just before the wave a large school of mullet arrived.”

English backs billionaire’s New Zealand citizenship Prime Minister Bill English yesterday backed the granting of citizenship to Trump-backing billionaire Peter Thiel in 2011 as a former cabinet minister revealed he’d known about it for years.

Wayne Mapp, a minister during the first term of John Key’s government, commented in June 2013 on The Standard blog defending the then-PM’s relationship with tech magnates.

He noted Key would have met many of them during previous career as an investment banker at Merril Lynch.

“He is certainly going to know those who come to New Zealand especially if they are from the US where the PM did a lot of his work. In Peter Thiel’s case he has actually become a citizen,” Mapp wrote.

Mapp yesterday said he had first heard of Thiel’s citizenship following his departure from Parliament in 2011.

“I remember being told – I won’t name the person – ‘You know he became a citizen?’

“I didn’t think there was anything exceptional about it. I’d only become aware of it after I left politics. Certainly, the way it was spoken to me, it wasn’t said to be an unusual thing,” he said.

Mapp said he was aware of one citizenship approval where living-in-New Zealand requirements were waived.

“That was where a person wanted accelerated citizenship to represent New Zealand in sports,” he said.

Mapp said Thiel was a welcome addition to New Zealand, and recounted a meeting with him in 2010, in his capacity as Minister of Research Science, and Technology.

“He seemed really engaging and really interested in New Zealand.”

This support for Thiel was matched by the Prime Minister, who said during a

“I don’t think there’s anything suspicious here at all. New Zealand is a better place with Mr Thiel as a citizen,” he said.

Thiel’s citizenship was approved under an “exceptional circumstances” clause of the Citizenships Act by the then-Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy in 2011.

His sole statement on the issue said: “I don’t recall this specific application”.

T

oday marks the annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in connection with the anniversary of the liberation of AuschwitzBirkenau.

The events of that horrific passage in time are forever etched in our minds, but as time goes on, it’s easy to feel removed and distant from those black and white images we see on our screens.

This is especially relevant for younger people who will learn about it in schools, but as we continue to lose holocaust survivors, we also lose any tangible evidence and first-hand testimony of these horrors.

This year’s theme is Restoring Their Identities: The Fate of the Individual During the Holocaust and Yad Vashem – The World Holocaust Remembrance Center – does wonders at acknowledging, cataloguing and profiling the memories of those who became victims and the causes, effects and impacts of war.

As atrocities continue to go on around the world, we must remember these tragic events and the lives of millions killed in the pursuit of The Final Solution.

It’s only been in the past few weeks that the horrifying, and utterly disrespectful, social media trend of Holocaust Memorial selfies began filling the web, with people smiling, posing and contorting their bodies into yoga moves and handstands, beside symbols of remembrance.

May we stop this trend and behaviour right away and replace it with education, somber reflection and realisation of what has happened in our very recent past.

With the current global rise in anti-Semitism, extremism and misunderstandings of other cultures, it is vital we remember these events, not only today, but every day.

The way in which it is taught and remembered also must be done sensitively, but matter-offactly, as it has long been discussed the most appropriate way for these stories to be told.

Anyone who has had the opportunity to visit a concentration camp, or memorial in Europe, will know nothing prepares you for the shock, horror and lasting images that stay in your mind long after you’ve left. For those with a more direct personal connection, it cuts even deeper.

On this day of remembrance, may we preach tolerance and respect for our neighbours, and continue to learn and educate ourselves in the lessons the past can teach us.

And may we never, ever forget.

Who’d be a black-billed gull?

It lives a precarious life ...

riving home Tuesday over a dirty and rapidly-flowing Ashburton River, I wondered how the black-billed gulls were getting on. I sadly figured that the poor little buggers would be surfing their way out to the mouth at Hakatere.

Not a great start to life for them I pondered, dodging stones thrown by three little grippers and then hit by a flood.

I couldn’t help but grin when I read in the Guardian the next morning a gull expert was saying they would be fine and the ones unable to fly would be washed downstream to another island.

Probably a great result all round, let’s hope the afore-mentioned grippers leave them alone now.

I know the teenage years are an interesting time and I know I turned into a dumb-arse when I hit those years, but throwing stones at an endangered species, is taking things to a whole new level of dumbarseness!

So what do we do about serious cases of dumbarseness like this?

here, to connect these two, but did you know in Pakistan only around 5 per cent of people pay tax?

One of the ways the government over there gets businesses to pay their tax is to send around a small group of transgender people to perform show tunes in their workplace until they are shamed into coughing up.

In Australia they were having problems with groups of youths congregating in carparks committing acts of dumbarseness.

They fixed the problem by playing Barry Manilow songs over loud speakers in the carparks.

Boom, instant dispersal.

thing happened with boy racers in Christchurch, show tunes over loud speakers were used to disperse them.

So there is the answer, local people who commit acts of dumbarseness, like the three youths throwing stones at the gulls, should be rounded up and placed on the chess board (similar to the gulls on an island) and a group of transgender people can perform Barry Manilow tunes until they submit and swear to never commit similar acts ever again. Or worse still their parents could do the singing, how embarrassing for them!

litical correctness, will ask the youths nicely to do their very best and try hard not to do it again, then blame everyone but them for their actions and go and buy them something. Poor little misunderstood loves.

Extremists storm hotel At least 11 were killed and 50 injured yesterday as Somali security forces ended a siege by extremist fighters who stormed a hotel in the capital, police said.

Four al-Shabab attackers were also killed in the attack on Dayah hotel, which is often frequented by government officials, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein, a senior police officer. The death toll may rise, he said.

Survivors described chaotic scenes in which hotel residents hid under beds and others jumped out of windows of the four-storey building to escape the attackers.

“They kicked down room doors and at some point posed themselves as rescue teams by telling those inside to come out (only) to kill them,” said Hassan Nur, a traditional Somali elder.

He said two well-known clan elders were among those killed.

The assault on the hotel started when a suicide car bomb exploded at its gates.

A second explosion soon followed.

Dozens of people, including lawmakers, were thought to have been staying at the hotel at the time of the attack, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein.

Wax figure ‘creepy’ A new wax figure of Ryan Gosling hasn’t quite lived up to fans’ expectations after its unveiling was roundly mocked on Twitter. Avalanche survivors never gave up hope First there was a loud roar.

Then darkness – hours and hours of darkness.

A couple among the nine survivors of an Italian avalanche that devastated a mountain hotel say they survived nearly 58 hours buried beneath feet of snow by sucking on glass- and mud-filled ice, comforting each other and those nearby, and praying.

The initial shock was so loud and the force so strong that the couple – 22-year-old Giorgia Galassi and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Vincenzo Forti – said they were convinced it was another earthquake rocking the luxury Hotel Rigopiano.

They never considered the threat of an avalanche at the snow-bound resort.

“I don’t think anyone imagined it. We didn’t know until the firefighters told us. We thought the whole time it was a very strong earthquake,” Galassi said in her parents’ living room in the town of Giulianova, sitting next to Forti.

She wore a necklace of an angel that a friend had just given her, celebrating their survival.

They said they were scared but never gave up hope that they would survive.

They had arrived at the luxury hotel the evening before the deadly avalanche, undeterred by the accumulating heavy snow.

When it hit the next afternoon, they were gathered with the other guests ready to leave, sitting in a tea room or standing in the adjacent entry hall, waiting for a snowplough to clear the 9-kilometre road through Gran Sasso park so

they could go home.

Galassi said she was particularly fearful of the temblors that had started that morning, and had waited outside for a while. But she went back into the hotel due to the cold and after the hotel management’s assurances that it had resisted previous quakes.

It wasn’t long before a loud roar announced the tragedy.

After the shock of finding themselves beneath a wicker chair that protected them from a beam, Galassi and Forti said the first relief was realizing they were not alone.

“When we fell, when eve-

rything fell on top of us, we yelled, ‘Is anyone alive? We are alive!’” Galassi said. “Then we heard another voice, and we were relieved.”

When they looked up, they had just 50 centimetres between their heads and the ceiling. But behind them, they could see ice through a hole in the glass panel that they could reach if they stretched out. That ice was their lifeline, something to suck on and quench their thirst.

“At times there was even glass and mud (in the ice). But it was survival,” Galassi said.

For a while, their cellphones gave them some light. Then dark came. The young couple huddled together in the tiny space, sitting at first and then lying down to sleep, using Galassi’s fur coat and a blanket they found nearby for warmth.

Forti said heat from the fireplace near where they had been sitting kept the temperatures comfortable for many hours.

Galassi said she passed the time in prayer.

Galassi said they first heard rescuers around 11am Friday.

“They said to stay calm, that they would pull us out.”

Within a short time, they were free.

Restraining order denied Jennifer Lopez no longer has a restraining order against a man who’s allegedly been stalking her for years, and her own security team is reportedly to blame. Lopez, 47, obtained a temporary restraining order against Tim McLanahan in early January after he’d been arrested for visiting her LA mansion without permission, forbidding him from going within 100 metres of the Jenny From the Block singer and her family. A judge dismissed a request for a permanent restraining order against McLanahan, who Lopez’s security detail claims has been following her from her Las Vegas residency to her home in Los Angeles, sending her unwanted gifts and trespassing on her property.

Trump moves to build wall President Donald Trump moved aggressively to tighten the nation’s immigration controls yesterday, signing executive actions to jumpstart construction of his promised US-Mexico border wall and cut federal grants for immigrantprotecting “sanctuary cities.”

As early as today, he is expected to pause the flow of all refugees to the US and indefinitely bar those fleeing war-torn Syria.

“Beginning today the United States of America gets back control of its borders,” Trump declared during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security. “We are going to save lives on both sides of the border.”

The actions, less than a week into Trump’s presidency, fulfilled pledges that animated his candidacy and represented a dramatic redirection of US immigration policy. They were cheered by Republicans allies in Congress, condemned by immigration advocates and triggered immediate new tension with the Mexican government.

Trump is expected to wield his executive power again later this week with the directive to dam the refugee flow into the US for at least four months, in addition to the open-ended pause on Syrian arrivals.

The president’s upcoming order is also expected to suspend

issuing visas for people from several predominantly Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – for at least 30 days.

Trump is unveiling his immigration plans at a time when detentions at the nation’s southern border are down significantly from levels seen in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The arrest tally last year was the

fifth-lowest since 1972.

Deportations of people living in the US illegally also increased under President Barack Obama, though Republicans criticised him for setting prosecution guidelines that spared some groups from the threat of deportation, including those brought to the US illegally as children.

Immigration advocates and others assailed the new president’s actions. Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said the president’s desire to construct a border wall was “driven by racial and ethnic bias that disgraces America’s proud tradition of protecting vulnerable migrants.”

How Trump plans to pay for the wall project is murky.

Pena Nieto said yesterday, “I have said time and again, Mexico will not pay for any wall”. He has been expected to meet with Trump at the White House next week, although a senior official said Trump’s announcement had led him to reconsider the visit.

Pioneer TV actress Mary Tyler Moore dies at 80 Mary Tyler Moore, the star of TV’s beloved The Mary Tyler Moore Show whose comic realism helped revolutionise the depiction of women on the small screen, died yesterday. She was 80.

Moore gained fame in the 1960s as the frazzled wife Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. In the 1970s, she created one of TV’s first career-woman sitcom heroines in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

“She was an impressive person and a talented person and a beautiful person. A force of nature,” producer, creator and director Carl Reiner, who created the The Dick Van Dyke Show, told The Associated Press. “She’ll last forever, as long as there’s television. Year after year, we’ll see her face in front of us.”

Moore won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent

Tributes came pouring in.

“Mary’s energy, spirit and talent created a new bright spot in the television landscape and she will be very much missed,” Robert Redford, director of Ordinary People, said in a statement.

TV wife from their show.

“There are no words. She was THE BEST! We always said that we changed each other’s lives for the better,” he said.

Ellen DeGeneres echoed the sentiment of others on Twitter: “Mary Tyler Moore changed the world for all women.”

Moore’s first major TV role was on the classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, in which she played the young homemaker wife of Van Dyke’s character, comedy writer Rob Petrie, from 1961-66.

As Laura, she traded in the housedress of countless sitcom wives for Capri pants that were as fashionable as they were suited to a modern American woman.

Laura was a dream wife and mother, but not perfect. Viewers identified with her flustered moments and her protracted, plaintive cry to her husband: “Ohhhh, Robbbb!”

Moore’s chemistry with Van

Dyke was unmistakable. Decades later, he spoke warmly of the chaste but palpable off-screen crush they shared during the show’s run.

They also appeared together in several TV specials over the years and in 2003, co-starred in a PBS production of the play The Gin Game.

But it was as Mary Richards, the plucky Minneapolis TV news producer on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77), that Moore truly made her mark.

At a time when women’s liberation was catching on worldwide, her character brought to TV audiences an independent, 1970s career woman.

“Everything I did was by the seat of the pants. I reacted to every written situation the way I would have in real life,” Moore told The Associated Press in 1995.

“My life is inextricably intertwined with Mary Richards’, and probably always will be.”

In brief Closer to catastrophe?

A Doomsday Clock symbolising the threat of apocalypse could be about to move closer to midnight.

Leading scientists who are the clock’s keepers will announce the new “time” in an event to be streamed live. With the state of the world as it is, they may well decide that global catastrophe is only a minute or two away. Corruption suspicions A judge questioned Haiti’s president-elect yesterday about a confidential report leaked during campaigning that suggests he might have laundered money and received special treatment to get loans in years before the businessman ran for the country’s highest political office. Jovenel Moise, who is scheduled to be inaugurated as Haiti’s next leader on February 7, met with a Haitian judge in a closed-door session that lasted four hours. Moise said he decided to go to the court voluntarily without an attorney because he has nothing to hide and respects the law.

Cashier stole $9.5m A cashier at a Pittsburgh monuments and engraving firm stole at least $9.5 million from the company during the 16 years she worked there, federal prosecutors said yesterday. Prosecutors say Cynthia Mills, 55, stole the money while working for Matthews International Corp. from 1999 to 2015. They say she cashed cheques made out to Matthews or had them routed to a bank account of a bogus company she controlled.

Mills was charged yesterday with mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.

No charges laid No criminal charges will be filed against a police officer who fatally shot a man inside a home last year, despite a witness’ statements that the man was not holding a rifle or pointing it at an officer during a confrontation. In a statement released yesterday, Shelby County district attorney Amy Weirich said the officer was acting in self-defence when he shot Alexio Allen on March 23 in the Memphis, Tennessee, neighbourhood of Raleigh. Weirich does not name the officer, but police records show it was Officer Leon Dickson who shot Allen, 30. Both men are black.

Argentine goldsmith Juan Carlos Pallarols is creating beautiful roses and other pieces of art from bullets, pistols and even parts of airplanes from the Falkland Islands war as a way of promoting peace between his country and Britain.

The nations fought a brief but bloody 1982 war after Argentina invaded the South Atlantic archipelago.

The self-proclaimed pacifist is also known for crafting the presidential batons of Argentine presidents and the chalice of Pope Francis.

His latest project fuses weapons donated by families of the Argentine and British war dead

and is called “two roses for peace”.

“The idea is to transform the material of war into objects of art and peace,” Pallarols said.

Bullets, shells of FAL rifles, 9mm pistols, anti-aircraft ammunitions, and parts of C-130 Hercules and Mirage III airplanes have been melted in an oven at Pallarols’ workshop, where the 74-year-old artist

turns them into stems and petals of roses paying homage to the war dead.

“The airplane bullets are an excuse,” he said. “What I want is to fuse the hearts and love of the people. I want love to fuse. That will be the real success of all of this.”

In all, the war claimed the lives of 649 Argentines and 255 British soldiers.

Another boy has been arrested after the mass breakout at a detention centre in Victoria that has left the government promising sweeping changes to the youth justice system. The youth, 17, was arrested at a property in the Ballarat suburb of Redan about noon yesterday, police say. Two more remain at large, after 15 youths escaped from Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Wednesday afternoon. Eight were captured before nightfall on Wednesday. Four were captured at a property in Ashburton about 8am yesterday.

NZ dollar hits 2 1/2-month high

By Paul McBeth The New Zealand dollar rose to a two-and-a-half-month high after inflation climbed back into the Reserve Bank’s target band, effectively putting the kybosh on the prospect of further rate cuts.

Government figures yesterday showed the consumers price index rose 0.4 per cent in the December quarter for an annual increase of 1.3 per cent as the recovery in global oil prices pushed up local petrol costs and as the rampant housing market continues to drive rapid house price gains.

The local currency climbed as high as 73.12 US cents, the highest since November 9, and recently traded at 73.07 cents from 72.70 cents immediately before the release, while two-year swaps rose 4 basis points to 2.42 per cent.

Economists polled by BusinessDesk had been picking a quarterly pace of 0.2 per cent for an annual increase of 1.2 per cent, while the RBNZ’s own forecast was for consumer prices to rise 0.2 per cent in the December quarter for an annual increase of 1.1 per cent.

Governor Graeme Wheeler cut the official cash rate a quarter-

point to a record-low 1.75 per cent in November, and projected the benchmark rate to stay unchanged through the bank’s forecast horizon until the end of 2019.

Stuart Ive, senior dealer foreign exchange at OMF in Wellington, said the data shows inflationary pressures heading into 2017 could prompt the Reserve Bank to raise the OCR earlier than expected.

“It clearly does seem unthinkable now that we could possibly be in an easing cycle,” Ive said.

“That’s one of the things it’s going to be very difficult for the RBNZ to portray at its next meeting, because that could cause the kiwi to spike up.”

ASB Bank chief economist Nick Tuffley said yesterday’s data showed tradable inflation, which covers goods and services that compete internationally, was less of a drag than expected, and took any further cuts to the OCR “well off the table, barring some major development”. Still, Tuffley was less convinced higher rates were on the cards this year.

Rates markets indicating an early hike to the OCR were “premature”, he said.

“The RBNZ will be relieved to see a reasonably broadbased lift in inflation over Q4,” Tuffley said.

“However, with annual inflation only just back within the target band for the first time in over two years and more downside risks on the horizon in terms of the NZD, we expect the RBNZ to leave the OCR on hold for the foreseeable future.”

The market week in review A

fter a cautious week last week when investors worried about two major political events, markets have turned optimistic, with plenty of economic data to process as well as positive results from the global reporting season helping to move markets.

Although we have seen positivity this week, it had a shaky start.

Caution came following on from the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Trump’s inauguration speech echoed his pre-election promises to protect American workers saying that “every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families”. Initially the market took this as a positive and US share prices appreciated on Friday. However, these gains were undone at the start of this week amongst the political uncertainty that President Trump represents.

Analysts will be watching the first 100 days of the Trump presidency closely. The post-election rally saw the S&P 500 rise 6.0 per cent, the fifth largest rally since records began. History shows that in the first 100 days of presidency, the S&P 500 has risen 70 per cent of the time for an average gain of 1.6 per cent. However, the odds are against Trump as a republican president, averaging a return of -0.4 per cent and showing gains just 60 per cent of the time.

The highlight on the local calendar this week was the release of the fourth quarter consumer price Index (CPI), which is a measure of inflation. The December quarter showed a 0.4 per cent increase in the CPI, above expectations for a

0.3 per cent increase. On an annualised basis, inflation rose 1.3 per cent. This was in line with market expectations, however, was above the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s forecast for headline inflation to be 1.1 per cent. The stronger than expected inflation figure almost certainly means that the official cash rate will be on hold for at least the rest of the year and that the next move is likely to be an increase, with a few economists now calling for the OCR to rise before the end of the year.

Inflation in Australia, however, went in the opposite direction, coming in below expectations for the fourth quarter. The market was expecting a 0.7 per cent increase in consumer prices for the quarter and an annualised rise of 1.6 per cent. However, the data showed just a 0.5 per cent rise for the quarter and a 1.5 per cent gain for the year. The lower-thanexpected inflation could open the door for the Reserve Bank of Australia to cut the official cash rate, should other data show a loss in momentum for the economy.

Global reporting season kicked up a gear this week, with almost 20 per cent of the S&P500 due to report. At the start of the week only 63 companies had reported and of those only 48 per cent had beaten revenue estimates while 75 per cent had exceed expectations for earnings. Investors have been looking for some solid earn-

ings from companies during the reporting season to match current valuations.

This week has yielded some strong results from a number of companies which has seen some strong share price gains and boosted US markets to record highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average pushed through the key milestone of 20,000 during the week, taking just 42 trading days to reach this from 19,000, the second fastest milestone run on record.

Flash Purchasing Managers Index’s (PMI’s) have been released for January during the week for a number of regions around the world. These are initial readings on how manufacturing is tracking around the world and indeed are the first indicators for 2017. A PMI is an indexed figure with readings above 50 indicating expansion within the sector while below 50 would indicate a contraction. The Eurozone’s PMIs showed a slight decline in activity with the index slipping to 54.3 from 54.4 in December. Japan’s rose to 52.8 showing the fastest expansion in almost three years as export orders surged. The US had a reading of 55.1 for January well above expectations and hitting a 22-month high.

Cross has its own identity A

full five seater, the Europeanbuilt Hyundai i20 Cross is designed to meet the needs of active Kiwis of all ages.

It expands on the appeal and practicality of the regular i20 (due February 2017) and shares its 1.4 litre Kappa engine and automatic transmission with Hyundai’s most petite offering.

The 74kW/134 Nm MPI engine with continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) meets strict Euro VI emissions standards and helps the new i20 Cross achieve a best fuel efficiency figure of 6.7litres/100km.

Picking up Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language, the new i20 Cross has its own identity and stands out alongside the regular i20, marrying bold design to clever engineering and offering an adventure-oriented access point into the Hyundai range.

It is the first time the i20 has been offered in a Cross version in this country.

All new alloy wheels, an additional 20 mm of ride height, roof rails and exclusive exterior trim additions including stylised front and rear bash guards differentiate the new Cross version and hint at its additional versatility, as do standard roof rails ready for a roof box full of gear or a bike rack.

At the front there are halogen projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights, wide upper and lower radiator

apertures, a practical black-finished lower bumper half and the prominent stylised bash guard.

Down each side the i20 features robust wheel-arch mouldings, durable running boards that continue the practical surfacing established by the lower half of the front bumper.

The alloy wheels are specific to the Cross version in 17x7.5 size and are fitted exclusively with Pirelli tyres.

An enclosed and well protected underside assists in giving the i20 cross a 0.30 drag coefficient.

The body structure is 42 per cent high strength steel giving the i20 Cross excellent torsional rigidity.

Safety features include a full complement of six airbags – drive and passenger dash, front seat side airbags and curtain airbags to protect both front and rear passengers.

Rally a family affair T

omorrow the Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club will be doing something they have done 47 times before.

They’ll be running their 48th Annual Rally.

One of the major events on their calendar, the club’s annual rally is a popular and keenly anticipated event and this year’s run will be no exception.

And of course with 47 runs under their belt the club is very experienced and really good at running these events.

Club captain David Oakley says the members who have registered will be taking part in a variety of fascinating vehicles.

David says there are two routes designed to suit the different vehicles taking part.

One includes an optional off road section and each route ends at the same very interesting secret destination.

Our motoring writer Roger Hart will be among those competing on Saturday; he’ll be with his daughter Gretchen, her partner John and their children Theo and Sylvie.

They’ll be travelling in Gretchen and John’s Triumph 2500TC saloon.

They are just the third owners of this car, it

was bought new by the late Neil Campbell who was a cousin of Gretchen’s grandfather.

It was the last of a succession of Triumphs which Neil had owned and meticulously maintained.

In 1986 Neil sold the car to local Triumph enthusiasts Trevor and Morag Cullimore, who continued to look after it very well.

They enjoyed motoring in the Triumph for 28 years.

In the meantime Gretchen, who had enjoyed owning a Triumph 2000 while at university, was keen to get another car similar to the one in which during her student days she made many fun-filled road trips with friends.

So for Gretchen being able to buy the car from Trevor and Morag was a dream come true.

And of course it meant a lot to the Cullimore’s that not only was the car going to a very good home where it would be well cared for but it also pleased them to know it was being reconnected with the family of the original owner.

The Triumph is a 1977 model 2500TC which has a 6-cylinder twin carburettor motor which drives the back wheels via a 4-speed manual gearbox fitted with overdrive.

One of the last TC models produced, it’s a delightful car which provides Gretchen and John and their children with the opportunity for comfortable classic motoring.

Participation in the Vintage Car Club Annual Rally has become a Hart family tradition.

It was started when Roger’s father Grenville Argyle McFarlane Hart – better known of course as Johnny – rode his Douglas motorcycle on the first running of the event back in 1969.

(Roger’s dad became known as Johnny because his brother had trouble pronouncing his given name.)

Two years later Johnny had completed the restoration of an AJS motorcycle, so he rode it and Roger went along on the Douglas.

Later Johnny and Roger’s mother Joycie sometimes took part in their Lanchester saloon which Roger and his sister Jude still have.

Jude has driven the car on some annual rallies and Roger who has the AJS has often ridden it on these events.

Cousin Stuart Hart has also taken part many times either in the Oldsmobile bought new by his and Roger’s grandmother, or the Mercedes Benz which has only been owned by himself and his late parents.

Almost certainly a member of the Hart family has been on every one of the club’s annual rallies and when Theo and Sylvie cross the start line tomorrow it will mean four generations of the family have taken part.

The Vintage Car Club invites members of the public to their grounds on Maronan Road from 9.30am tomorrow morning to meet participants and see their cars before they head off on the rally.

Skilled restorer will be missed

I

rwin Keith Hands – affectionately known as Ike – who passed away recently shared his interest in cars with us and our readers back in February 2006.

In retirement Ike was looking for projects so encouraged by his friend and neighbour the late Arthur Wolfreys, he decided to restore a car.

A skilled person, Ike found another talent and ultimately he restored four cars.

When he spoke with us Ike had just finished restoring a rather special Vauxhall.

The car was significant because in earlier days his uncle the late Bill Broker had owned a similar car in which Ike and his late wife Muriel made many journeys, including two special trips to Christchurch to get their engagement and wedding rings.

The Vauxhall which Ike restored has since been sold to the grandson of the original owner.

When family and friends gathered to celebrate Ike’s life he was remembered as a devoted family man who always found time to do many things in our community living by the mantra of asking others what he could do for them rather than asking what they could do for him.

The Guardian Motoring Team have always appreciated Ike’s ongoing interest in what we have been doing and we offer his daughter Lynley and his son and daughter in law Paul and Lynne and their families our condolences.

Adding a Kiwi touch

olden New Zealand has released details of three special Limited Edition Commodore models, created as a result of a secret skunkworks type project at Head Office in Australia.

“Given the undeniable sales success of Commodore in New Zealand as well as the numerous victories for our drivers in the Touring and Supercar Series, we have taken the opportunity to add our own Kiwi flavour to these limited edition models,” said the Managing Director of Holden New Zealand, Kristian Aquilina.

Commodore, we asked our own Holden Supercar legend – four time Bathurst champion, Greg Murphy – to be part of this project. Greg has graciously agreed to allow us to feature his famous number 51 as a key component of this exciting limited edition release.”

Both the Director and Magnum will be restricted to just 51 units in New Zealand, while the aptly named Motorsport edition will have an extended run of 151 vehicles.

Commodore enthusiasts wishing to purchase one of the limited edition models will have the opportunity to select a specific build number upon receipt of their deposit, although a small number of specific build numbers will be auctioned with proceeds to go to a new road safety initiative to be announced by Holden later this year.

“We anticipate there to be considerable interest in #5 (the racing number of the

late Peter Brock), #88 (six time Australian Supercar champion, Jamie Whincup), and our own Supercar champion, #97 of Shane Van Gisbergen,” said Mr Aquilina.

“And it goes without saying, the number 51 will also prove popular – although I think one of the models might already have a particular racing driver’s name against it.”

Holden Ambassador, Greg Murphy, was suitably chuffed at his inclusion as part of the Limited Edition model programme in New Zealand.

“I’m rapt that my contribution to the famous Commodore name over more than 20 years of racing is being recognised by Holden. These new models are sure to become an iconic part of motoring folklore, so who wouldn’t be thrilled to be forever linked with the absolute best of a legend.”

Tietjens embraces challenge Sevens tournaments usually build to a crescendo but for many, a highlight in Wellington will come early on day one.

The defending champion All Blacks Sevens’ opening game is against a Samoan team coached by their renowned former mentor of more than two decades, Sir Gordon Tietjens.

The godfather of sevens in New Zealand stood down last September in the wake of their failure at the Rio Olympics.

Snapped up quickly by Samoa, Tietjens makes his tournament debut in charge of the island nation, determined to improve their stocks.

He told the World Rugby website he has nothing to prove against the players he knows so well and was pleasantly surprised when he first saw the draw.

“It’s early days but we have worked incredibly hard over the last three or four weeks so hopefully it will be a good game,” he said.

“It’s funny. When I stepped down from coaching the New Zealand team after 22 years I thought that was it and now all of a sudden I find myself here at

Hurricanes assistant coach John Plumtree has confirmed his team never expected to field their leading All Blacks for the upcoming Brisbane Tens.

Promoters Duco Events have used current All Blacks Israel Dagg, Jerome Kaino and Damian McKenzie to promote the inaugural event at Suncorp Stadium on February 11-12, inferring that the top New Zealand players would be on show.

But this week, it was confirmed that players who toured the Northern Hemisphere last November would be ineligible to play, while they served a mandated 12-week stand-down between seasons.

The 61-year-old led New Zealand to an extended period of sevens domination, clinching four successive Commonwealth Games gold medals and 12 of the first 15 world series titles.

Olympic champions Fiji and South Africa have passed the All Blacks Sevens in the last two

years but Tietjens doesn’t believe he has lost his coaching mojo.

He has plenty of ideas to lift Samoa, who won a world series crown six years ago but have slipped to the point that they missed qualification for last year’s Rio Olympics.

Always fastidious with his approach, he believes the island

nation can make enormous gains if the players are prepared to improve their attitude towards nutrition and fitness.

“In Samoa, they understand the game.

“The physicality of it is never questioned but it’s the speed and intensity of the game that they have got to get used to.” - NZME

But Plumtree insists stars such as Beauden Barrett, Dane Coles, TJ Perenara and the Savea brothers would not take the field.

“We were never led to believe that we were taking any All Blacks, to be honest,” he said.

“We’ve got a couple of wellknown players that are coming with us, like Brad Shields and Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, but we were never told that we were ever able to take any All Blacks.

“We think we’ve got a pretty good team without them, to be honest.”

The frontline All Blacks will return to Super Rugby camps next week and Plumtree hinted they would be in no condition to take on the fast-paced style of game expected at Brisbane.

“I think the All Blacks coming back into it aren’t quite fit enough yet, certainly not compared to the other boys that have been training for two-and-a-half months.

“I think it will be a really good tournament with the players that

“Obviously they want the best players they can have at the Tens, but having a lot of tired All Blacks, tired Australians or tired South Africans is not going to do the tournament any good.”

Another former All Black confirmed for the Tens is veteran winger Cory Jane, who has recently returned from an off-season stint in Japan.

“From a conditioning point of view, [the Tens] is going to be good, but obviously it’s a totally different ball game to what we’ll be playing in a few weeks in Japan [in the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby opener against the Sunwolves].

“I think the boys will enjoy a bit of a break from mundane training, and will go across and have a bit of fun.

“I don’t think there will be too much kicking.”

Milner-Skudder, who has resigned with New Zealand Rugby, the Hurricanes and Manawatu until the end of 2019, confirmed he was eager to take the field as soon as possible, after the disappointments of 2016.

“There’s been plenty of chat, but my situation is different from some of the other boys,” he says.

“I’m good to go and put my hand up for the Tens.

“I’m pretty pumped for it – something new, having less players on the field, so that will be good for outside backs like me.”

Fordyce scoops another title Ten days after becoming the youngest winner of the National Golf Croquet Championships, in Nelson, 16-year-old Edmund Fordyce has won another prestigious croquet title.

Along with 28-year old Aiken Hakes, of Wellington, Fordyce won the National Open Association Croquet Championship doubles title, at Mount Maunganui, last week.

Hakes and Fordyce beat Aaron Westerby (captain of New Zealand’s MacRobertson Shield World Championship winning team) and Josh Freeth (current world under-21 golf croquet champion), 26-13, 24-17, in the final.

This, the most coveted doubles title in NZ croquet has been contested annually for well over a century.

Records suggest that Fordyce and Hakes’ combined ages make them the youngest winners.

Hakes went on to win the singles title as well.

At last weekend’s tournament, Fordyce completed for the first time a triple peel – one of the most difficult sustained sequences possible in association croquet.

Remarkably, having achieved this milestone, he went on to execute triple peels in each of his next three games, a feat that had the doyens of the sport expressing delight and disbelief in equal measure.

Fordyce’s next croquet focus will be the forthcoming World Under-21 Golf Croquet Championships, which will be held in Melbourne.

Parker fight closer Joseph Parker’s defence of his world title against Brit Hughie Fury is another step closer. The WBO has ordered a purse bid to take place at their offices in Puerto Rico on Thursday next week, where the rival promoters get the chance to take control of the fight promotion.

The winning bidder will choose the venue and date. Champion Parker gets 60 per cent of the purse. A deal between the promoters can be worked out before the purse bid.

Dutch sprint ace Kirsten Wild has held off Australian cycling rival Chloe Hosking for a tight win at the inaugural Race Melbourne.

Hosking was also pleased with coming so close to Wild on a course that does not suit the Australian sprinter’s strengths. It was Wild’s third win so far this month, after two stage wins and third place overall for the Cylance rider at the Adelaide Santos Women’s Tour.

Agreement contrary to founding document

By Dana Johannsen It’s been billed as a “defining moment for the America’s Cup”, but the new agreement announced overnight setting down the framework for the next two editions of the event could just as easily mean absolutely nothing.

The overseas news reports noted Team New Zealand’s “curious” absence from the announcement.

Of greater curiosity was why there were four other skippers standing alongside Jimmy Spithill on the podium in support of a plan that runs contrary to the founding document of the event.

While Oracle Team USA insist the framework agreement “respects and upholds all aspects of the Deed of Gift”, it does not.

The Deed of Gift does not grant the defender the right to set the parameters for future editions of the Cup. Oracle notes this in its own press release: “The Deed of Gift is the foundational document governing the America’s Cup. “One of the unique aspects of the competition is that after winning the racing on the water, the victorious yacht club and its team then become the trustees of the event, responsible for outlining the terms of the next edition.”

In that sense, the announcement should be viewed as Oracle outlining their intentions should they retain the Auld Mug in Bermuda in June.

There is nothing to stop a new defender and challenger of record – even the Oracle patsies that signed this agreement – from ignoring the framework in future editions.

Even if there are enforceability clauses in place in the new agreement, it is doubtful any court will uphold these and disregard a document that has governed the America’s Cup for 165

For Team New Zealand, the only syndicate not to sign the plan, it must be galling to watch Oracle and its cabal of merry men pat themselves on the back for “getting together for the benefit of not only themselves but the America’s Cup”.

In a press release full of stunning ironies, the most comical

was Oracle founder Larry Ellison’s assertion that “[syndicates] who want to enter this race now know ... that the rules can’t change on them”.

This is after Oracle Team USA pushed through retrospective changes to both the format and class rules in this edition of the Cup nearly a year after the syndicates had agreed upon the protocol.

If they can find a way around the agreements this time, they’ll find a way to do it next time.

On the surface what Ellison, Russell Coutts and his cohorts are trying to do may appear quite honourable.

The lack of stability for teams between Cup cycles, the prohibitive costs of entry, the astronomical budgets, the changing class of yacht from one edition to the next – these are all longagreed upon shortcomings of the event.

But drill down into the detail a little bit further, and it seems this plan will not achieve many of the objectives it sets out to.

A budget of $US30 to 40m over a two year cycle does not represent any reduction in costs from the (admittedly dubious) $US80m figure organisers threw about when announcing plans for the 2017 event.

How they will attract new teams under these new terms is also questionable.

The two-year turnaround and the decision to stick with the same America’s Cup Class (ACC) yachts for the next cycle will heavily disadvantage any startup syndicates.

The same goes for the rules that prevent teams from building, testing or training on AC45 surrogate boats.

Why would any new team sign on to the next edition of the event knowing their rivals already have the benefit of having run full testing programmes in previous cycles and have a bank of data?

The only way for any new team to catch up is poach a slew of key talent from other organisations – something that comes at a huge expense.

All the signatories to this new agreement appear to have done is try to secure their pay cheques for another four years, at the expense of removing the prestige from the America’s Cup. - NZME

Ronda Rousey hasn’t been seen much since her 48-second loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, but she recently made an appearance to support the protesters against the controversial Dakota Access pipeline at Standing Rock. Rousey was spotted alongside her friend in an Instagram post that stated the former women’s bantamweight champion brought supplies to the protesters. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to move forward with the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines.

It’s a year to the day the Roosters were rocked by footage of their star disgracing himself on Australia Day, resulting in a stripping of the co-captaincy and an eight-game ban. However the man who helped Pearce come through the ranks believes the Roosters No.7 has learnt from his ordeal and is now the leader the club needs him to be. “I took him under my wing from the get-go, and he was a bit of a larrikin back then. Meehan loss for NRL Three years ago, Willis Meehan was considered the NRL’s brightest young star and described as the next Sonny Bill Williams. Now the 21-year-old’s NRL career is almost certainly over after the Manly Sea Eagles decided to release him from his two-year contract agreement.

The hugely talented yet troubled Meehan has chosen to return to the sport of boxing, where he once pursued a Commonwealth Games berth. Despite previously being named alongside the likes of Valentine Holmes, Sione Mata’utia, Tepai Moeroa, Joseph Tapine and Kane Elgey in the 2014 National Youth Competition team of the year, Meehan’s footballing talents it seems will remain forever untapped.

One hand on the title

The target will be on the back of Fairton this weekend when they take to the courts in the return of A-grade tennis.

After a prolonged break over the festive season the elite competition returns tomorrow at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre and Fairton’s match with Methven shapes as one which could determine the outcome of round two with another round remaining after this weekend.

Should Fairton beat Methven and Allenton claim victory over the second placed Hampstead then their lead will be almost unassailable heading into the final round in two weeks with next weekend booked out due to the junior age group championships being held.

Three wins from three matches thus far in the round have the Fairton side pegged as almost unbeatable and with just the one win from their three matches Methven will be seen as heavy

underdogs for the match.

The Hampstead and Allenton fixture will also be of great interest with some major permutations to emerge from the match for both sides, especially if Methven can do the unthinkable and lower Fairton’s colours.

Both sides are close enough to push for round honours if successful although neither side plays Fairton in the last round of play so their destiny may be out of their own hands.

Tomorrow’s other match will see Southern and Tinwald square off.

In A-grade reserve action, Tinwald will be looking to continue their unbeaten march through the second round which has seen them not drop a match since the beginning of the round.

They play Southern tomorrow who currently sit third on the table while the second placed Hampstead take on the cellardwelling Allenton.

Methven and Dorie will lock horns in the other match.

Fairton will be looking for another big performance from Connor Brosnahan this weekend.

Turning 37 in June, Williams battled back from a set down to defeat her gallant American compatriot 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-3 in yesterday’s first semi-final at Melbourne Park.

Chasing her elusive first Open crown and eighth career major, Williams will face her sister – six-time champion Serena – or Croatian surprise packet Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in Saturday night’s final.

A throwback all-Williams grand slam final would be the siblings’ ninth – but first since Serena beat Venus in 2009 at Wimbledon.

Guptill wants test berth Black Caps master blaster Martin Guptill is considering a drop down the batting order in a bid to break back into international test contention.

The Auckland opener looms as a key contributor to New Zealand’s chances in next week’s Chappell-Hadlee one-day series, filling into the big-hitting role previously held down by former skipper Brendon McCullum.

But, while his ODI career average of 42.36 is very respectable, Guptill has not been able to recapture that form at test level (29.38), much to his frustration.

After spearheading the Black Caps batting line-up against Bangladesh in oneday and T20 formats, he was sent back to the provinces

and played no part in the subsequent two-test series.

“I ask myself the same question all the time,” Guptill said.

“Just why? Why isn’t it working?

“But I enjoy coming back to play for Auckland, and hopefully I can score a couple more hundreds before the season’s end

and put some pressure on and get back into the test team.”

He admits he has discussed a change to his usual role with coach Mike Hesson, hoping that may provide a way into five-day consideration.

“I’d like to bat anywhere in the order.

“I’ve had a few conversations with Hess about where I want to bat, and

we’ll have a little play around when the Plunket Shield starts up again and see what happens there.”

With Tom Latham and Jeet Raval solidifying their opening spots, Guptill has his eye on the number five position currently occupied by Cantabrian Henry Nicholls, who made 98 in his last test outing.

“Obviously Henry played some useful knocks against Bangladesh and has put a bit of pressure on to keep that number five spot.

“It’s going to be hard, but at the end of the day, if you just keep scoring runs, you’re asking the right questions.

“That’s all I’m concentrating on at the moment.”

His latest showing for the Aces showed he can approach the Australian series with some confidence.

“I was just trying to get a bit of time in the middle,” he said.

“It was a bit scratchy to start, but once you spend time out there and start to get some rhythm back, you start hitting the ball a bit better.”

Despite the Black Caps’ capitulation, Guptill starred with the bat in the pre-Christmas ODI series against the Tasman, scoring 114 off 102 balls in Sydney and averaging 64.3 across the three matches.

“It was pretty fluent that day [in Sydney],” he said.

“I’d love to be able to do that every time I go out to bat, but I know that’s not realistic.

“If I can do that a couple more times this summer, then hopefully I can win some games for New Zealand.”

McCullum blamed for Heat’s semi-final loss Former Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum has been widely lauded for his aggressive captaincy style over the years, but many are now questioning the decisions that saw his Brisbane Heat ousted from the Australian BBL semi-final on Wednesday night.

McCullum has been one of the standout performers of this year’s competition and, during the semi loss to Sydney Sixers, was named by former Aussie captain and commentator Ricky Ponting in his allstar line-up.

But McCullum’s decision to bowl seamer Ben Cutting in the tie-breaking Super Over against Sydney Sixers badly back-fired, when Moises Henriques plundered 22 runs off six balls.

Ever the punter, McCullum has always been an unorthodox leader, and always backs himself and teammates to put pedal to the metal at all times.

Earlier, he surprisingly tapped part-timer Joe Burns to open the bowling with his modest mediumpace side-armers, a gamble that resulted in the dismissal of powerful Sixers batsman Nic Pattinson in the first over.

Cutting produced a tight final over of just six runs to force the tie after a thrilling match, but could not reproduce that form in the decider.

He and McCullum, who had topscored for the Heat with 46 runs during their dig, could then only muster 15 runs in the Heat’s Super Over response.

Sydney Sixers players are calling for the use of more video technology for decisions in the BBL following Wednesday night’s dramatic super-over semi-final victory over Brisbane at the Gabba.

Allrounder Johan Botha awoke sporting a bruise on his right bicep after he was given out caught behind on the third last ball of the Sixers’ chase, after replays clearly showed he missed the Ben Cutting delivery.

It was a crucial blow for the Sixers too, given they needed

four to win at the time and the dismissal brought tailender Nathan Lyon to the crease with No.9 Ben Dwarshuis.

“It could have cost us a finals spot. Fortunately it didn’t,” Botha said.

Dwarshuis eventually tied the game, running for two on the last ball to put it into a super over, before the Sixers booked their spot in the final against the Perth Scorchers on Saturday in the tiebreaker.

Sixers skipper Moises Henriques said that he would like to see the rules changed to allow the third umpire to have a greater impact, but wasn’t a fan of slowing the game down by allowing captains to challenge decisions.

“There was a couple of umpiring decisions I felt if they got right it wouldn’t have been a super over,” Henriques said.

“I don’t think there should be referrals for the captain to use, but maybe if there is an absolutely howler before the batsman walks off then who knows.”

Botha would like to see one review allowed for each team.

Meanwhile Henriques also suggested another system could be used rather than the super over, after the tournament reached it first tie of the season in the semi-final.

However he admitted he wasn’t sure of what any alternatives could be.

“After 240 balls in a T20 game, for it to be decided by six balls each it’s sort of a little bit of an anti-climax in my opinion,” he said.

“You’ve got to have some sympathy for the Heat.”

By Evin PriEst World No.1 Jason Day is thrilled with being handed a “first-class seat” to the return of Tiger Woods during this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The 156-player tournament starts today and Australian Day has been placed in the marquee group with 14-time major champion Woods and world No.3 Dustin Johnson for the first two rounds.

The event will be rotated across the South and North courses of the former US Open venue during the opening two days.

Day – the 2015 champion at this event – hasn’t played with good friend Woods since the opening rounds of the 2015 Open Championship at St Andrews, when Day missed the playoff by one shot to tie fourth.

“Yeah I’m excited to play with Tiger.

“I get a first-class seat to watch him,” Day told AAP. “I think everyone has been waiting a long time and it’s good for the game of golf to have him back.

“You can see the crowds and you realise how big he is to the sport.”

However, Day insisted fans temper their expectations for Woods’ first full-field event after 16 months on the sidelines recovering from back surgery.

“Don’t judge his results too quickly; let him play tournaments and get back into the swing of things.

“It may work out that way for him but it’s very very difficult to come back.”

Woods – whose eight professional wins at Torrey Pines include the 2008 US Open – is just as eager to play with Day and bighitting American Johnson.

Johnson’s three wins in 2016 included the US Open and a World Golf Championships event. “(They are) the best in the world and they’re good friends of mine.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better pairing,” said Woods.

The former world No.1 praised the work of Day and his long-time caddie and coach Colin Swatton to maintain golf’s top ranking since March last year.

Nonu out of Brisbane All Blacks great Ma’a Nonu won’t be making the trip to the Brisbane Tens with French club Toulon. The twotime Rugby World Cup winner has been left out of the Toulon squad for the inaugural 10-a-side tournament played at Suncorp Stadium on February 11 and 12. The Top 14 club will feature former Wallabies Drew Mitchell and James O’Connor as well as Japan test fullback Ayumu Goromaru.

Toulon are in the same group as the Hurricanes and the Western Force.

Celtic in record books The Tech Stags will welcome back the experience of Jason Morrison for the beginning of the Muirhead Rosebowl this weekend.

Focus turns to Rosebowl

There’s a clean slate heading into the first round of the Muirhead Rosebowl in Mid Canterbury senior cricket this weekend.

Allenton’s victory in the Pritchard Shield last weekend is now a distant memory and there is a new piece of silverware to focus the attention for the remainder of the season.

And with Allenton on the sidelines this weekend enjoying the bye, there’s a good chance for a couple of teams to set the early pace.

Points from both the Pritchard

Shield competition and the Muirhead Rosebowl count towards the Studholme Shield which is awarded at the end of the season to the side with the most points after both competitions.

Methven will be smarting as they head to Lauriston on Saturday looking to get things back on track after coming close to winning the Pritchard Shield.

The arrival of harvest will limit their selections possibilities slightly and they will have to do without a couple of danger men.

Davey Maw will be readying himself for Saturday night’s box-

ing match against his brother Dan and they will also be without captain Mitch Sim who has proven to be a solid force at the top of the innings.

Lauriston will see the match as a good opportunity to get one up on their neighbours and continue the good form that saw them beat Allenton when they last played, after having the bye last week.

With no representative cricket this weekend the side will welcome back all of their top line players.

In tomorrow’s other match Coldstream host the Tech Sharks

in what could be the match of the round after the two sides played last weekend. The raw ability of both teams is quite impressive, and on their day both are capable of winning against any other team in the competition.

Coldstream got their nose in front last week with a strong batting effort before rolling Tech quite comfortably and will be looking to reproduce an effort like that on their home turf.

They will be boosted by the return of Richard Print while Tech will welcome back the experienced shoulders of Jason Morrison.

Resurgent Adams powers Thunder to victory It looks like Steven Adams has well and truly recovered from the concussion that last week saw him stuck on the sidelines.

The Thunder centre yesterday afternoon recorded a doubledouble in Oklahoma City’s 114105 victory over New Orleans, appearing back near his physical best.

Along with Russell Westbrook, who led the way with his 23rd triple-double this season, Adams was the key contributor to a win that lifted the Thunder to a 27-19 record.
