A Chertsey woman feared her home would go up in flames after a large vegetation fire ignited in a nearby paddock yesterday. Firefighters were last night working to establish what sparked the blaze, which destroyed a strip of vegetation in a paddock on Wards Road yesterday afternoon. For Chertsey resident Kaye
Stockdill, the blaze was far too close for comfort. Miss Stockdill, who lives across the road from the paddock where the blaze started, said a series of fires in the area in recent years had left her fearing for her safety and the safety of her home. “I’m sick of it, it’s like living on a time bomb,” she said. “How are we supposed to sleep at night?” Nine fire appliances attended

a large fire in the area last January, which destroyed crops and threatened to spread into nearby areas of Chertsey. That fire was found to have been ignited by a train and Miss Stockdill believed a train was also responsible for yesterday’s blaze. However, Ashburton fire risk management officer Murray Cairns said investigators had yet to determine the cause of the fire.
With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.
For Miss Stockdill, a major concern was the amount of dry vegetation and weeds along the train tracks that run alongside the paddock. She believed the scrub was a fire hazard and it was KiwiRail’s responsibility to clear it. “It’s not good enough,” she said. A spokesman for KiwiRail said the company took the risks of scrub fire along the rail corridor very seriously.
“We recognise that this has been an extremely hot and dry summer across the country, especially in rural areas, and we are having issues with trackside fires,” he said. The spokesman said the cause of the Chertsey fire had yet to be determined and KiwiRail was working with the rural fire service to reduce the fire risks on the rail corridor, including those associated with track maintenance activities.
