THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Tourism funding may be cut BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Experience Mid Canterbury has been put on notice that its funding lifeline from the Ashburton District Council could be cut. When district councillors worked through next year’s budgets yesterday, they put the tourism organisation on the chopping block, questioning the value of the Ashburton and Methven i-Sites. They also decided the amount of funding

given to the parent organisation might be reduced. In its budget Experience Mid Canterbury made a pitch for an increased grant from council, but councillors questioned the value they were getting from the tourism organisation. Councillor Stuart Wilson wanted the $254,000 Experience Mid Canterbury requested to run its business slashed to $100,000 and the $146,000 requested for the i-Sites cut to $70,000. “Every year it’s the same old

story and we keep putting this off until the next year. The information centres are not making money and yet we’re putting more money into them and what for? Putting $400,000 into this sector is ridiculous; it’s the only business that is subsidised by ratepayers,” he said. He received strong support from several other councillors. But cutting funding wasn’t as easy as just taking it out of the budget, council community relations manager Gavin Thomas

said. “We’ve just set tourism up as a council-controlled organisation. Expectations have been outlined and these include no surprises. “If we’re going to change our funding, we need to talk to the organisation first and find out the effects of cutting this funding rather than have a knee-jerk reaction and stopping funding,” he said. Talking was a cop-out, Mr Wilson said. “It’s up to the council to stick

to its guns. We won’t save any money if we talk to them.” The council’s liaison committee will meet with the Experience Mid Canterbury board to discuss the impact of reduced funding for the next financial year. The council has just completed the paperwork to set the tourism body up as a council-run organisation.
