Case of the backfiring car BY JAIME PITT-MACKAY JAIME.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Police have been kept busy chasing reports of loud banging from a white Ford Laser in various locations around town this week. Senior Sergeant Matt Emery confirmed they had received multiple reports of a car backfiring between 9pm and midnight
on Monday evening, followed by more reports between midday and 1pm yesterday. “We received one report of a shotgun being fired and a lot more of a car backfiring so, it most likely was a car backfiring,” he said. “Staff attended but didn’t locate any vehicles.
“We do now have an updated description of it being a white Ford Laser with a group of young people in it and it was last seen in Allenton.” Emery said the issue was more of an annoyance than causing any actual risk to anyone, but it was still upsetting for members of the public.
“The more information we can get on these things the better, registration is the A1 thing, but even a description, location and direction of travel can be good,” he said. “Often we get these things reported to us and we are on the other side of town and by the time they get there they can be
gone.” While loud banging noises can be concerning, Emery said there was nothing specifically illegal about making your vehicle backfire.
