Police have been kept busy chasing reports of loud banging from a white Ford Laser in various locations around town this week.

Senior Sergeant Matt Emery confirmed they had received multiple reports of a car backfiring between 9pm and midnight

on Monday evening, followed by more reports between midday and 1pm yesterday.

“We received one report of a shotgun being fired and a lot more of a car backfiring so, it most likely was a car backfiring,” he said.

“Staff attended but didn’t locate any vehicles.

“We do now have an updated description of it being a white Ford Laser with a group of young people in it and it was last seen in Allenton.”

Emery said the issue was more of an annoyance than causing any actual risk to anyone, but it was still upsetting for members of the public.

“The more information we can get on these things the better, registration is the A1 thing, but even a description, location and direction of travel can be good,” he said.

“Often we get these things reported to us and we are on the other side of town and by the time they get there they can be

gone.”

While loud banging noises can be concerning, Emery said there was nothing specifically illegal about making your vehicle backfire.

Police once again responded to bad behaviour later at 1.30am when a group of teenagers were reported acting suspiciously in the Kermode Street area.

“They have set fire to a phonebook and decided to throw it towards some scaffolding,” he said.

“We were able to locate one of the teenagers after the incident and took him home to his mother and he has been referred to youth aid.

“It may seem like fun but it is pretty stupid behaviour and the consequences can quickly build, if it had landed by a building it could have easily caught fire and then you are talking about damages and potentially risking human life.

“It is always tough to say if a group of kids are troublemaking or just hanging out but the best thing to do if it is late at night or early in the morning or it is at school time, just give us a call.”

Bird count shows promise The hunting season ahead is looking promising for duck hunters in the central Canterbury region if Fish & Game’s latest bird survey is to be believed.

Each year around the country Fish & Game staff conduct survey flights of their regions to determine numbers of birds present so that the hunting harvest is sustainable.

Central South Island Fish & Game staff recently conducted their annual population

trend counts flights for paradise shelduck and black swans and the results for this year show more birds than last year.

The flights, which visited 66 sites throughout the region, showed numbers of birds were up by 10 per cent to 15,927 for paradise shelduck and black swan numbers were up 38 per cent to 2750 birds total.

Fish & Game use these population trends counts to determine the setting of regulations

for the coming game season which starts in May. The surveys are conducted in January and February when the birds congregate for molting and have lost their feathers. They are unable to fly for a short period of time, so are easier to count.

It is always a tight schedule for the field staff though with the need to conduct the surveys so that the regional Fish & Game councils are able to make the necessary decisions to keep the

hunter harvest sustainable.

In Canterbury the trends counts indicate bird numbers have remained steady or are increasing for the past 11 years.

This has enabled the Central South Island and North Canterbury regions to offer special summer hunting seasons to help farmers out with crop predation by the birds and also let hunters get the most value from their whole season game bird licence.

Tepid pools were once suggested for the Ashburton Domain.

In a letter to the editor of the Ashburton Guardian 100 years ago, H. M. Jones said a tepid bath was more attractive to learners than cold water.

He said a public bath, at the domain or, more usefully, in the grounds of the Borough School, could be used by all schools.

News of the past is about to become a lot more accessible, thanks to the National Library Service, which will this year add editions of the Ashburton Guardian from 1922 to 1950 to its Papers Past online facility.

Editions of the Guardian from 1879 to 1921 are already accessible online at www.paperspast. natlib.govt.nz.

Ashburton’s family history group is looking forward to old papers going online as it will make it easier for those researching their ancestry. The group currently opens its archives at the Ashburton Museum and Heritage Centre four days a week, under supervision of librarian Lynn Armstrong.

Armstrong said those wanting to search papers up until 1950 would be able to do it online, from anywhere in the world.

History group secretary Rita Wright said the group had been keen to get more old papers online and had been planning to apply for a grant to cover the $25,000 cost of the work, but the National Library Service had generously been able to accommodate it in FRIDGE FREEZER its own work programme.

Measles outbreak hits home People are considered immune if they have received two doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, have had a measles illness previously, or were born before 1969.

Unimmunised people who come within two metres of an infectious person, however briefly, have a 90 per cent chance of contracting measles.

Measles is a serious, highly infectious, potentially life-threatening disease. One in 10 people who get measles will need treatment in hospital. Up to 30 per cent will develop complications, usually children under five and adults over the age of 20.

Mid Cantabrians are being advised to check their vaccination status as a measles outbreak hits the region.

Three measles cases have been confirmed in the past four days in Canterbury and health authorities are working to identify all close contacts, determining their immunisation status and offering vaccination.

They are also awaiting test results for a small number of suspected cases and any further confirmed cases will be notified.

The three confirmed cases come from Rangiora and Christchurch and include a teenage male, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 40s. None are thought to have been fully immunised against measles.

Unimmunised people exposed to measles first develop a respiratory-type illness with dry cough, runny nose, temperature over 38.5 celcius and feel very unwell.

The rash starts on day four to five, usually on the face, then moves down to the chest and arms.

Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink advises that people are infectious from five days before the onset of the rash until five days after the rash appears.

“People should stay in isolation from the time that they may have become infected until five days after the rash first appears,” Dr Pink said.

“This means staying home from school or work and having

no contact with unimmunised people. If others in your household are unimmunised, they need to stay in isolation too.”

Two MMR vaccinations offer protection, and the district health board is advising that if your vaccinations are up-to-date you will be protected. If you are unsure, you can check your vaccination status with your general practice team.

The MMR vaccine is free for some people.

“Because measles is so infectious, it’s important people with symptoms don’t visit their GP or after-hours clinics but phone their family doctor or general practice team for advice instead, to limit further exposure to other people,” Dr Pink said.

Fairton principal thrilled to be back

Fairton School principal Mike Hill aims to maintain the great traditions of the school.

Fairton School principal Mike Hill is thrilled to be back at the helm of a small rural school.

He went into semi-retirement last year, taking a break from his career, but it did not last long.

“I missed the relationship you have with students, and with staff, and with the community. I am thrilled to be back doing that and being part of a good team.”

The 60-year-old dad of four is in his element as principal of Fairton, which has a roll of 32.

He came to Mid Canterbury in 2002 when he took up the principalship at Wakanui School, coming from Christchurch where he had been a senior teacher at St Andrew’s College Preparatory School.

He went on to become deputy headmaster at Waihi School, and then assistant principal of Ashburton Christian School until early last year.

That’s when he decided to

dedicate himself to other things, and within a break lasting about eight months, he did voluntary work such as Meals on Wheels, and worked on the family house, where he lives with wife Ruth.

“I had always planned to work and do various things, it was good to have a break and it kind of gives you that perspective of things that you really enjoy,” he said.

He came back to the education scene as relieving principal at Fairton at the start of this year, following former principal Rebekah Clement taking up the principalship at Wakanui School.

Teaching in small rural schools is his passion and he said there were many advantages rural schools offered such as children getting lots of opportunities.

His goals at Fairton, which has a stable roll, are to maintain the great traditions of the school, its fantastic facilities and supportive local community.

Benjamin Paul Connor was remanded for sentence to May 6 when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week after admitting charges of assault, intentional damage to a car, and possessing cannabis and bong.

Police said Connor had been living with his parents and wanted to use their car on November 14. When they returned in the vehicle, he got into an argument with his father, punched him and put him in a headlock. The vehicle’s wing mirror was damaged in the argument.

Police who were called found a glass cannabis bong and a small bag containing 2.5g of cannabis in Connor’s bedroom.

Peters told off Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters has been rebuked by the Human Rights Commission for using the term “Indian givers” in an interview. Peters was speaking to Sky News Australia yesterday about New Zealand’s long-standing offer to take 150 asylum-seekers from Australia’s offshore detention centres. He questioned why the offer was made in 2013 by former Prime Minister Sir John Key but said it remained on the table because New Zealanders weren’t “Indian givers”. The term, which actually refers to Native Americans, is considered derogatory and offensive.

Speed limits drop The full list of streets in central Auckland where speed limits are proposed to come down has been revealed. Auckland Council is proposing to drop the speed limit of many of the streets in central Auckland from 50km/h to 30km/h as it attempts to make the roads safer for the growing number of pedestrians, cyclists and residents.

The proposed bylaw will be put out for public consultation until March 31. Hundreds of streets are on the list, most in or around Auckland’s CBD including Wynyard Quarter, Freeman’s Bay and St Heliers. The decrease in speeds particularly in Franklin and Rodney is due to a rise in deaths and serious injuries in these areas. This was due to economic and population growth, new demands on the unforgiving high-speed rural road network and vulnerable users.

Police workforce expands in Ashburton

Police workforce numbers are continuing to expand locally and nationally, and have hit a record high.

The total number of frontline officers, support staff and others within the organisations has reached more than 13,000.

In Mid Canterbury, 28 officers report to sub area commander Senior Sergeant Matt Emery at the Ashburton Police Station and six CIB officers are based at the station, bringing the total to 35, with four more working in highway patrol and one working in the commercial vehicles area based out of Ashburton.

The number of frontline officers around the country has increased by 595 since the start of the 2017/18 financial year, bringing the total number to 9434.

It is those frontline officers who are serving some of the most important roles, says Emery.

“The frontline is what comes first and they are the most important as that is what the public want to see,” he said.

Numbers in Ashburton have been expanding, with two new officers joining since Christmas, while two more who recently completed Police College are undertaking field training in Christchurch and will be joining in late March. More are scheduled to join as the year progresses.

“There has especially been an increase after the Government put 1800 (officers) extra through. We have been allocated more, while some will be allocated to work groups

like organised crime and some will be replacing vacancies,” he said.

The officers and other staff that work behind the scenes also serve an important role, even if they are not often visible to the public.

“There are jobs where the public might not be seeing what is going on. Crime has changed and groups like the organised

crime group have got its interests in stopping major crimes that you wouldn’t be seeing uniformed police doing,” he said.

“The public want to see uniformed officers and that is what is important.”

The Government increased funding for police by $300 million last year, and police minister Stuart Nash is celebrating the milestones they have been reaching, and

the work those staff do.

“The organisation is made up of frontline officers, recruits in training, and non-constabulary support staff. While the workforce of uniformed and plain-clothed officers is often the most visible face of police, I also want to acknowledge those who work behind the scenes to keep our communities safe,” he said.

“The non-constabulary workforce includes those who handle demanding roles such as round the clock work in police communications centres. It includes specialists on the new digital frontline who tackle cybercrime, child sexual abuse, and complex financial investigations.

“It includes those who work to prevent family harm, support technical and covert operations, research and develop new policy, and who play a vital role handling police exhibits and examining crime scenes.”

There has also been a strong interest from potential applicants who are keen on making a difference with a career in the police. In the last six months of 2018 more than 2800 people applied to join police, an increase of 14 per cent on the same period in 2017.

Tutor Carol Smith is hoping to bring a basic understanding of New Zealand’s third official language to the community through a series of introductory courses in New Zealand sign language.

Smith, who was raised signing due to both her parents being deaf, is hosting an information evening at the Ashburton Library on March 5.

“It is a beautiful language that my parents passed on to me and I am looking at passing it on to others,” she said.

The lessons include learning spelling and numbers, how to introduce yourself, and other important skills like dos and don’ts when talking to a deaf person and the best way to get a deaf person’s attention.

“It can be a very important skill to have as you never know when you are going to come across a deaf person,” she said.

The lessons are two hours each, with no speaking allowed, except during a short coffee break midway through the class.

Smith said that alongside lessons, there were plenty of resources available online, including a free app.

The information evening next

week will run from 6.45pm to 7.45pm and will be a chance for people to ask questions about the courses and potentially begin learning basic signs.

A lifejacket trade-in scheme has shown just how important having a modern lifejacket can be to those who choose to go out on the water.

Coastguard New Zealand’s Old4New campaign van has recently been touring the country, stopping in 61 locations nationwide, including Timaru, to allow people to exchange their old lifejackets for a discounted lifejacket.

“Lifejackets that are over 10 years old should be replaced even if they look okay to the eye,” Coastguard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes said.

“Seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float, which is a serious concern in an emergency.

“It has been heartening to see the warm welcome the van receives in places and the increasing number of families stopping by to get new lifejackets fitted.

Holmes said the younger generation can influence behaviour change when it comes to lifejackets.

“Often you see all the young people on a boat wearing lifejackets but not the parents,” he said.

“But everyone on board needs to wear one and kids often pester older family members to put one on. A lifejacket never ruins a day on the water.”

A total of 3462 old, damaged or obsolete lifejackets were traded-in while the van was on the road, almost 500 more than the previous campaign.

Many of the lifejackets handed in were unusable and downright dangerous, and every year there is always one that should be in a museum. This year it was an oilskin lifejacket surrendered in Greymouth, which was approximately 75 years old and may have been used during World War Two.

Push to rename South Is South Islanders are behind a campaign to change the South Island’s name to NZ South.

Retired Queenstown businessman Stanley Gyles, who is a spokesman for a group of otherwise anonymous “high-profile” South Islanders, said it’s time the South Island asserts its independence from the drastically-different North Island.

Gyles said many South Islanders call their island the Mainland, but said that name has also been adopted by some North Islanders.

However, it’s not just a name change they are seeking.

They want to have a pared-down bureaucracy in which South Island regional councils would be scrapped, and city and district councils would be streamlined.

They believe it could also help the revival of dormant South Island towns.

“Who knows how this will progress, but initially this is to see what people in the South Island, particularly, think about their future and their own identity.”

Gyles personally believed the South Island has got to a stage where it doesn’t need

the North Island, and that its offerings are very different from the latter.

From the South Island’s world-class scenery, adventure tourism, ski slopes and walking tracks to its hydroelectric resources, from its world-famous Marlborough and Central Otago wine regions to its more laidback people.

“For instance, we don’t have an Auckland with its gangs, racial tensions, violence and congestion.

“And when an international visitor goes home and says they had a great time in NZ,

James Anthony Nolan, 26 (right) has a warrant out for his arrest after failing to appear in court over the past few weeks.

He faces allegations of fraud, assault with a weapon and reckless driving.

Nolan is linked to the British family widely dubbed as the “unruly tourists” who caused havoc around New Zealand over the holidays.

Police said yesterday, as part of their investigation to locate Nolan, they had liaised with partner agencies including Customs and ensured border alerts were put in place.

“Interpol has been notified and police continue to liaise with our partner agencies both in New Zealand and offshore,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bridget Doell said.

Late last week, police said their investigations into his whereabouts had led them to believe he had fled New Zealand.

Customs confirmed Nolan left the country having “deliberately circumvented border controls by using a valid passport that was not his own”.

In a blunder that was described as “a case of human error”, Nolan was waved on by a Customs official after the eGate passport check – which uses biometric data to match and confirm a person’s identity – flagged him as a potential risk.

“The eGate identified further checks were needed on the passport,” Customs said in a statement.

Bryan Hughes has been released from prison after serving four years and one month of his 11-year jail term – less than half his sentence.

High-profile rape victim advocate Louise Nicholas says in her opinion his early release is “absolutely disgusting”.

Hughes, now 63, raped and sexually abused a girl – Candy Shavin, then aged between 12 and 16 years – in Rotorua between 1998 and 2003. He admitted 21 charges in total, including two offences against a second girl.

A New Zealand Parole Board decision, released to the Rotorua Daily Post Weekend this week, confirms Hughes was let out of jail in December.

In 2014, Hughes admitted three counts of rape, 10 of indecent assault and six of unlawful sexual connection relating to offences against Shavin. He also admitted two counts of indecently assaulting the second victim.

Some offences were representative charges, meaning the offending happened more than once.

NZ, as a whole, is a great place I

must have missed the notice that was sent out advising that those of us in the South Island were against the name of the island we live in and wanted to separate ourselves from our northern counterparts.

But I’m picking I’m not the only one.

Just like I was, I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who were just as shocked to learn there is a group of people from our island who believe we are getting a bit of a raw deal and that we’re being lumped in with our less-desirable North Island neighbours.

But there is a group and they want to change the name of the

South Island to something far more meaningful, NZ South.

Original, isn’t it?

I didn’t realise that there was such a separation between our two islands and that we were up against each other so badly as this group would have you think.

They don’t like that we’re thrown in with the, and I quote, “gangs,

racial tensions, violence and congestion” of the North Island.

But hold on a minute. Does that mean we don’t have gangs, racial tensions, violence and congestion down here?

The reaction from the public last year when we ran a frontpage picture that included some insignia of a well-known, South Island-based motorcycle gang would suggest we’ve got the gangs. Racial tensions are everywhere, and we’ve got people who are that violent that they walk around stabbing a miniature pony. And anyone who’s driven through Ashburton when there’s a concert on in Dunedin will well know what congestion is all

about.

Those behind the movement have also stated that they are uneasy with the fact that someone might visit only the South Island, but describe their visit as being to New Zealand as a whole.

Funny that, last time I checked we were one country and not a separate entity.

While there might be some good intentions behind the revelation of changing the name of the South Island, there’s also a bit of madness mixed in for good measure, like wanting to have a pared-down bureaucracy in which South Island regional councils would be scrapped, and city and district councils would

be streamlined.

Doesn’t it all just seem a little bit too much?

New Zealand as a whole is a great and easily marketable place.

There are those who only visit the South Island and there are those who only visit the North Island. One usually cancels the other out.

Whether we are called Te Waipounamu, The Mainland, Land of the Great Divide or just the good old-fashioned South Island, it’s not really going to make too much of a difference to anyone visiting here.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

What has Bridges actually said on CGT?

n theory we have an Opposition in Parliament to hold the Government to account, and to provide the sense that there’s an alternative Government in waiting. To that end, the Leader of the Opposition should give us the sense of being a Prime Minister in waiting. What does New Zealand want from its Prime Minister, and are we getting it from Simon Bridges?

It’s been days since the Tax Working Group released its report recommending a capital gains tax and we’ve had reckons pouring forth from everywhere.

Is it a good idea? I’m not sure!

But boy has there been a lot said about it.

If you had hoped for reasoned debate from our politicians about the benefits and negatives of what the Tax Working Group recommended, you would have been very sad. The Government has said practically nothing, James Shaw said nobody should be elected unless they implemented a capital gains tax, and National has vomited up an incredible amount of negativity.

Bridges rushed out a statement saying the Tax Working Group report was “an assault on the Kiwi way of life” and that he’d “fight it every step of the way”.

He may have fancied that this was his Churchillian moment.

That after a year of not being liked, his soaring wartime rhetoric would cause New Zealanders to rally around him. He may have also believed that a capital gains tax would create a system where so much was owed by so many to so few. Except nobody was sure what Bridges meant by “Kiwi way of life”.

To clarify his thinking, Bridges rushed out a video that provided no clarity. He explained that the “Kiwi way of life” was to him “planning reform for affordable housing, better health, education”. Aside from a painfully dull view of our way of life, Bridges didn’t make clear how the Tax Working Group’s report assaults any of those things.

He also said “New Zealanders aspire and want to get ahead for themselves and their families.

How is it right that an $8 million home in Auckland won’t face a CGT but a couple scrimping and saving for a bach or crib for their family will get slammed with the top tax rate? That’s not the Kiwi way.”

National leader Simon Bridges was in Mid Canterbury this month, as a guest of Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.

PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN no new CGT! But this applies to such a small sliver of society. And it’s a sliver who would largely be voting for National anyway.

Most people in New Zealand don’t actually own multiple homes. Most people aren’t scrimping and saving for a bach.

They’re scrimping and saving for a first home. Or for rent. Or for food. Or to have enough money to buy their children shoes. Most people in New Zealand will actually pay less tax as a result of the recommended CGT by the Tax Working Group, because there’ll be an income tax cut.

It’s also not necessarily going to pass. National isn’t even attacking the Government. They’re ham-fistedly attacking a recommendation. If the Government doesn’t implement everything the Tax Working Group recommended then Bridges has blown his wad of rage all for nothing.

All of this takes away from some genuine problems with the proposed changes. Just one concern is that the recommendations seem to create a perverse incentive to invest money

counter-arguing the CGT that when he does it, it sounds like he wants an even bigger CGT than the one proposed. But mainly I’m worried that the Leader of the Opposition thinks that you pay a tax on gains before you’ve actually gained anything.

Nobody is paying a capital gains tax while “scrimping and saving”.

You wouldn’t pay a capital gains tax on your bach until you bought it. And then you have to sell it. Either he is willfully misleading the public or he is ignorant on how this works. Neither of those inspires confidence that this man should be Prime Minister.

I could be wrong, but it seems like what National really means by “Kiwi way of life” is “profiting tax-free off of a housing crisis”.

Even if you build up an empire of houses you’ll still earn money.

The Tax Working Group isn’t coming to nationalise your rentstock. The proposed CGT would tax the income you made by selling those properties at a profit.

If you just held on to them and kept collecting rents then there’s

in my family home instead of just about anything else, which does nothing for New Zealand’s chronic shortage of capital.

There’s definitely plenty to debate here instead of deploying the hyperbole that this is an assault on a national identity.

On the one hand I feel sorry for Bridges. His leadership of the National Party is so awful and fragile that he leaps at any opportunity he can to show he’s up to it. But on the other hand, between this and the rubbish he’s been putting about justice reform and the cannabis referendum, the man is either making a stuff up or hopelessly wrong about some serious issues. And we can’t trust our country to the hands of someone like that. It’s just not the Kiwi way.

Pell convicted of abuse The most senior Catholic cleric ever charged with child sex abuse has been convicted of molesting two choirboys moments after celebrating Mass, dealing a new blow to the Catholic hierarchy’s credibility after a year of global revelations of abuse and cover-up.

Australian Cardinal George Pell, Pope Francis’ top financial adviser and the Vatican’s economy minister, bowed his head but then regained his composure as the 12-member jury delivered unanimous verdicts in the Victoria state County Court on December 11 after more than two days of deliberation.

The court had until yesterday forbidden publication of any details about the trial.

The convictions were confirmed the same week that Francis concluded his extraordinary summit of Catholic leaders summoned to Rome for a tutorial on preventing clergy sexual abuse and protecting children from predator priests.

The jury convicted Pell of abusing two 13-yearold boys whom he had caught swigging sacramental wine in a rear room of Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral in late 1996, as hundreds of worshippers were streaming out of Sunday services.

Pell, now 77 but 55 at the time, had just been named the most senior Catholic in Melbourne.

The jury also found Pell guilty of indecently assaulting one of the boys in a corridor more than a month later.

He faces a potential maximum 50-year prison term after a sentencing hearing that begins today.

He has foreshadowed an appeal.

Pell had maintained his innocence throughout, describing the accusations as “vile and disgusting conduct” that went against everything he believed in.

His lawyer Robert Richter had told the jury that only a mad man would take the risk of abusing boys in such a public place.

He said it was laughable that Pell would have been able to force the victim into oral sex, given the cumbersome robes he was wearing.

Both he and Chief Judge Peter Kidd urged the jury of eight men and four women not to punish Pell for all the failings of the Catholic Church.

Pell, who walked to and from court throughout his month-long trial with a crutch under his right arm, was released on bail to undergo surgical knee replacements in Sydney on December 14.

Prosecutor Mark Gibson did not oppose bail, saying the surgery would be more easily managed outside the prison system.

Australia’s worst female killer profiled It’s been 19 years since Katherine Knight, an abattoir worker from the NSW Hunter Valley, murdered her de facto partner.

But this wasn’t any murder.

This was the most diabolical, sick and twisted killing in Australia’s history.

On the evening of February 29, 2000, the then 44-year-old mother of four stabbed her handsome miner boyfriend John Price 37 times, skinning his corpse and hanging his skin from meat hooks in the house they shared.

She sliced off his buttocks and cooked his flesh with vegetables and gravy before setting the dinner table with Price’s children’s names on place cards, news.com. au reports.

His decapitated head was boiling in a pot on the stove.

Knight was going to feed Price to his own children.

Price had just that day been at the Local Court in Scone taking out an apprehended violence order against her, following a series of violent fights.

Her motive was revenge, with exclusive insight into the case to come to light in a

Katherine Knight riveting episode on Foxtel’s Crimes That Shook Australia tonight.

Knight premeditated the murder of her partner days in advance, a court determined.

When Price was sleeping – after they had sex – Knight went on a stabbing spree while they were in bed.

Judging by blood evidence, Price woke up during the frenzy before attempting to escape as Knight chased him through the home.

He managed to open the front door and get outside but either stumbled back in-

side or was dragged back into the hallway, where he finally died after bleeding out.

Knight then flayed his body with her favourite knife, which she’d learnt to do working at an abattoir.

When Price didn’t show up to work that morning his boss called police who arrived to one the most savage crime scenes in history.

In the kitchen, they discovered baked potatoes and pumpkin in the oven and a still-warm pot with Price’s head floating in it with cabbage and zucchini.

Police had intervened before the children got home from school.

In an Australian first for a woman, Knight was sentenced to life in prison without parole at her trial in 2001.

Her papers were marked “never to be released”.

During sentencing, Justice Barry O’Keefe said Price’s suffering would have been unfathomable.

“The last minutes of his life must have been a time of abject terror for him, as they were a time of utter enjoyment for her,” Justice O’Keefe said.

An attorney for R. Kelly entered not-guilty pleas yesterday on behalf of the R&B singer, who faces 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office confirmed. Kelly is accused of sexually abusing four individuals, three of whom were under the age of 17 at the time of the alleged crimes, which took place between 1998 and 2010.

Prosecutors say Kelly’s youngest victim was 14 when the singer began sexually abusing her. He allegedly invited another victim to his studio after meeting her at a restaurant where she was celebrating her 16th birthday.

Horror crash recalled It was the disastrous accident nobody should’ve survived. But in a stroke of luck, Travis Barker – the former drummer for punk rock band Blink-182 – became one of the luckiest men alive.

On September 19, 2008, Barker and his close friend and musical partner Adam Goldstein were two of six passengers on the doomed Learjet bound for Los Angeles. But instead of reaching their destination, Barker and Goldstein faced the biggest fight of their life. The fight to survive. The jet crashed and burst into flames, killing four people, and only Barker and Goldstein survived. Barker was being interviewed on Good Morning America yesterday.

Kiwi businesses need to get on top of their emissions now or risk being caught out by new legislation, a new report has found.

The report, just published by law firm Bell Gully, looked at proposed changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) which could mean many companies may find it harder and more costly to gain access to units they need to meet obligations.

The Government recently announced it would put a cap on the ETS, limiting the number of units that could be traded under what remained the country’s main tool to counter climate change.

Its proposed Zero Carbon Act would introduce this cap through both a net zero emissions target for 2050, along with a requirement on the Government to have three fiveyear emissions budgets in place at any given time, as short-term targets.

From these caps on emissions, emissions pricing was expected to become a much more material issue for businesses through to 2050 and beyond.

Currently, the only eligible emissions unit in the ETS was the New Zealand Unit, or NZU, which were presently sitting around the effective legislative cap of $25 on the spot market.

Yet, some of the more moderate and optimistic scenarios suggest carbon prices of approximately $100 to $275 per tonne of emis-

sions, depending how ambitious the new act’s target would be.

While those cost rises appeared dramatic, the Government had flagged them early in the hope of giving businesses more clarity around what lay ahead in the next 30 years.

The report’s lead author, Simon Watt, said businesses may have previously passed all costs down the supply chain and relied on availability of NZUs at a modest cost to meet their obligations.

But that couldn’t last.

“Meeting ETS obligations has been a fairly administrative and relatively low-cost thing to do over the last five or 10 years, but soon it is going to need to be more actively managed and require more attention,” Watt said.

“Now is the time to get ready.

Businesses that are exposed to climate change risks should feature it on their board agenda at some point this year and once it gets on the agenda it should stay on and be kept under review.”

The report noted the greater certainty offered by proposed climate change legislation would be good

for business.

If businesses took the chance to review climate change risks early and seek out new opportunities as the economy transitioned, and make good decisions around processes and how carbon emission risks were allocated in their supply contracts, there was scope to reduce and minimise costs in the future.

Regardless, the path ahead was to a low-emissions economy.

Climate change would pose real challenges for some businesses and the rising cost of carbon could materially affect asset values and operating costs, Watt said.

“Business must adapt or risk getting left behind.”

Similar warnings have been signalled in the World Economic Forum’s just-issued Global Risks report for 2019.

That report, which polled around 12,000 senior business leaders and executives from the global risk industry, singled out climate change adaptation and extreme weather events among its five biggest risks of doing business in New Zealand.

Documents from Richard Yan’s evidence at the trial suggest that had Mainzeal’s original $3.2m loan to Richina been a share investment, it could now be worth $900m.

Shipley’s $US50,000 investment could be worth $US14.5m ($22m), on paper at least. And Yan’s Richina stake is possibly worth $US1 billion-plus.

A statement issued by Chapman Tripp on behalf of Shipley, Tilby, and Gomm acknowledged the judgment.

“The court’s basis for finding liability appears to have novel aspects which will require careful consideration,” it said. “The directors will not comment further at this stage as they take advice and consider their options.”

Liquidator Andrew Bethell says he is “thrilled” that the High Court found the directors of Mainzeal had breached their duties and has awarded a “meaningful distribution for creditors”.

BDO was originally seeking to recover up to $75m.

“We would have liked a higher number, but it’s a big judgment in terms of New Zealand reckless trading,” Bethell says. “I think it’s all about the governance that company directors owe to New Zealand companies and their creditors.”

The other significant impact of this decision is the role played by litigation funding in this case.

Litigation funding has some similarities to class actions in the US, in that third parties pay for mostly small litigants to take court cases against big corporates or organisations.

In this case, the action by the liquidator against the Mainzeal directors was funded by Auckland-based litigation funder LPF. “Litigation funding has enabled creditors to get access to justice,”

Mainzeal was one of the country’s largest construction companies when it went under in February, 2013, owing unsecured creditors $110m. Just under half of the money was owed to unpaid subcontractors, including tradespeople working on Mainzeal projects.

Former Ashburtonian, Shipley was a director of Mainzeal from 2004, and chairwoman of the company when receivers were appointed.

The liquidators, Brian MayoSmith and Andrew Bethell of BDO argued the directors breached their duties and were negligent in allowing the company to continue trading while insolvent.

Justice Francis Cooke agreed. In a statement following the release of a 178-page judgment, the High Court said Mainzeal directors were reckless, “had adopted a policy of trading while insolvent”,

Justice Cooke decided on total compensation of $36m, with Shipley and two other directors – Peter Gomm and Clive Tilby – expected to pay up to $6m each. The rest must be made up by Richina founder and boss Richard Yan. “The court arrived at a total figure of $36m, being approximately one third of the total loss to creditors, and being similar to the balance of funds that the directors had allowed the shareholder group to extract from Mainzeal,” the statement said.

Another director, former Brierley boss Paul Collins, was not ordered to pay any compensation, as he joined the Mainzeal board not long before its collapse.

Waiheke winery Isola Vineyards, an associated Richina company, which also received money from Mainzeal, was ordered to pay $2.1m. Isola is in liquidation.

Justice Cooke ruled that Shipley, Tilby and Gomm had acted “in good faith and with honesty”.

However, by adopting and sticking with a “vulnerable trading approach”, they had jeopardised the company.

Eggs can do anything T

here’s a lot more to an egg than something that’s scrambled, poached or fried for breakfast.

With a bit of imagination and a few tasty ingredients, eggs can do sterling duty as a key ingredient in a satisfying dinner dish.

They’ve had their turn as the bad guys on the healthy-eating list, but it seems eggs are now back in favour. Why not give meat a rest once a week and replace them with half a dozen eggs. Cheaper and probably better for you.

Tuna tortilla bake 5 eggs 50g butter 1/4 C flour 1 3/4 C milk 3T mayonnaise 3 jumbo-sized tortilla wraps 1 small red onion, diced 1 stalk celery, sliced 370g canned tuna 1C grated tasty cheddar cheese 2T chopped parsley Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Vege bake 4 eggs 1/2 C all-purpose flour 2C coarsely grated pumpkin 1C coarsely shredded zucchini 1/2 C chopped, pitted black olives 2T grated parmesan cheese 1t dried basil leaves 1/2 t garlic salt 6 very thin tomato slices 1 small onion, thinly sliced, separated into rings 1C grated cheese ■ Heat oven to 230°C (450°F).

■ Beat eggs and flour in medium bowl until smooth.

■ Add pumpkin, zucchini and 1/4 C of the olives; mix well.

■ Spread in greased 8-inch square baking pan.

■ Bake in centre of oven just until custard is set, about 10 minutes.

■ Mix parmesan cheese, basil and garlic salt; sprinkle over custard.

■ Top evenly with tomato, remaining olives, onion and cheese.

■ Bake until cheese is melted, about 4 minutes.

Moroccan wrap for one 1t olive oil 3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced 1 small clove garlic, crushed 100g chick peas, drained 2 large eggs, beaten Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1t harissa paste 1 wholemeal seeded wrap 2T flat-leaf parsley, chopped ■ Heat a small non-stick frying pan.

■ Add the oil, spring onion, garlic and chick peas, cook for one minute, stirring continuously.

■ Beat the eggs with seasoning and then add to the pan.

■ Continue to cook for a further 30 seconds, stirring until the eggs are scrambled to your liking.

■ Stir in the harissa paste.

■ Spoon the mixture down centre of a wholemeal wrap.

■ Scatter over the parsley.

■ Fold in the two ends, then roll up the wrap to enclose the filling.

■ Serve sliced in half.

Ashburton

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush a 24cm round baking dish with oil.

■ Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil and cook the eggs for 10 minutes.

■ Drain and rinse under cold water before peeling and slicing into quarters.

■ Melt the butter over a moderate heat in the same saucepan and mix in the flour, cook stirring for 2 minutes. Gradually add milk, whisking continuously until the mixture bubbles and thickens.

■ Remove from the heat and stir through the mayonnaise.

■ Lay a tortilla in the base of the baking dish.

■ Cover with half of the red onion, celery, tuna and sliced egg.

■ Spoon over a third of the sauce, sprinkle with a third of the cheese, half the parsley and season with salt and pepper.

■ Cover with the another tortilla and repeat the process.

■ Finish off with a tortilla on top, spread with the sauce and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.

■ Bake for 20 minutes until the top is crisp and golden.

■ Serve with a green salad.

Tomato, chorizo and egg bake

Egg and cauli curry 3T vegetable oil 1 large onion peeled and diced 1 plump red chilli, seeds removed if you want, finely chopped Thumb-sized piece of root ginger, peeled and grated 2 large waxy potatoes peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks 2T curry paste 1 medium cauliflower broken into florets 400ml can coconut milk 6 hard-boiled eggs halved lengthways 2T toasted flaked almonds (optional) Large handful of roughly chopped fresh coriander 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1T olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, crushed and chopped 1t ground cumin 2 x 400g cans diced tomatoes 1/4 C green olives 1t dried oregano 1T butter Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200g cooked chorizo sausage, sliced 150g feta 4 eggs 2T finely chopped parsley ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Heat the oil in a large frying pan and gently cook the onion and garlic until the onion is tender.

■ Add the cumin and cook for a minute or so before adding the tomatoes, olives, oregano and butter.

■ Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

■ Simmer for 20 minutes until the tomatoes are thick and saucy.

■ Transfer the tomato mixture to an ovenproof dish, a lasagne-style dish is ideal.

■ Stir the chorizo and feta through the mixture.

■ Make 4 indents near each corner – large enough to fit an egg.

■ Break an egg into each cavity and sprinkle with parsley.

■ Bake for 15 minutes or until egg whites have set.

■ Serve with crusty bread and a green salad.

■ Heat a large, deep non-stick frying pan, wok or shallow saucepan over a low heat.

■ Add the oil, stir in the onion and fry over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to turn golden.

■ Stir the chilli, garlic and ginger into the onion mixture and fry for 2 minutes.

■ Stir in the curry paste, cook for 1 minute ■ Toss in the cauliflower and stirfry for a further 1 minute to coat.

■ Pour the coconut milk into the pan and stir thoroughly ■ Add some salt and bring to the boil, stirring frequently.

■ Half cover the pan and reduce to a slow simmer.

■ Cook the curry for 20-25 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the vegetables are tender.

■ Half bury the eggs yolk-sides up in the sauce, then cover.

■ Simmer gently for a further 1-2 minutes to heat through.

■ Serve with a scattering of toasted almonds and coriander.

In brief Blazers hold off Cavs CJ McCollum scored 35 points and the Portland Trail Blazers hung on after nearly squandering a 23-point halftime lead to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-110 yesterday. The Blazers needed a 14-0 run late in the fourth quarter to finally put away a game that looked like a rout in the first half.

Cleveland cut the lead to 88-84 going into the fourth and was behind 105-102 with 4:42 left, but Portland’s backcourt duo of McCollum and Damian Lillard took over from there.

Losing streak for Spurs D’Angelo Russell had 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets forced the San Antonio Spurs into perhaps their worst offensive performance of the season in a 101-85 victory yesterday. A night after their defence was absent in a loss to the Knicks, the Spurs went across town and couldn’t get their offense going. San Antonio was held to its lowest point total of the season, and the NBA’s leading 3-point shooting team was a season-worst 16.7 per cent behind the arc.

San Antonio came in shooting a little better than 40 per cent behind the arc. That sent the Spurs to a third straight loss and a 1-7 finish on their annual road trip when the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo takes over their arena.

Shania’s a shooting star

Just four months after taking up outdoor target shooting, Shania Harrison-Lee has shot up the national rankings.

By the time the national outdoor target shooting championships in Christchurch wrapped up at the weekend, the 16-yearold Ashburton College student had shot her way to becoming the captain of the New Zealand junior team and the junior women’s team, and made the New Zealand women’s team, the New Zealand Wakefield (top 10 in New Zealand) and New Zealand Slazenger (top 20 in New Zealand) teams.

She won the Isle of Man Trophy for the shooter with the top junior aggregate and had three new pockets (badges) to add to her collection, for making the open, women’s and junior teams.

Her collection of medals, trophies and pockets is vast considering she has only been an outdoor target shooter since November.

But that was because before heading outdoors, Harrison-Lee was already an accomplished young indoor target shooter.

She had two full indoor seasons under her belt and headed into her first outdoor season off the back of a top few months indoors.

At the national secondary school championships she was the top individual and won the B grade, while she was second in the B grade at the national indoor championships and earned herself pockets for making the New Zealand women’s and junior teams.

Her shooting career started in Year 10, when she went looking for a new sport after a bad run of injuries on the hockey turf.

She tried pistol shooting for a start, before heading along to the Coronation Target Shooting Club where fell in love with the sport, the people, and the place.

Harrison-Lee is one of a number of youngsters currently shooting out of Coronation, and the Phoenix Target Shooting Club, but she was the first of the current crop to give outdoor a try.

The two disciplines aren’t that different.

They use the same equipment and the concept is the same, but outdoor shoot over 50m compared to indoor’s 25m, and out-

doors there are the added variables like wind to deal with.

It was often said that a good outdoor target shooter should make a good indoor shooter, because if you learnt how to shoot with the added challenges of the outdoors first, indoor wouldn’t seem so hard after that.

But Harrison-Lee was doing things round the other way.

As well as the added challenges like wind, outdoor also required a lot more endurance.

A championship indoors involves three cards of 10 shots, making each championship 30 shots, but outdoors, a championship is a minimum of 120 counting shots.

A single card in indoor takes around 12 minutes while outdoors it takes 60 minutes, with an hour-and-a-half for prep and sighting.

It was a challenge, and one that Harrison-Lee was glad she took up at the end of the 2018 indoor season.

“The indoor season finished in September/October and I was like, ‘what will I do for the next six months’,” Harrison-Lee said.

Her first six months outdoors

should help her when it comes to the next indoor season.

A shooter who had noticed she took a while to get going when the indoor season started, she hopes her experience outdoors will help rid her of that early indoor lull.

When indoor shooting restarts around April, Harrison-Lee will move to the masters grade – the top grade – and when outdoor restarts again later this year she expects she will be moving up to A grade.

Harrison-Lee came to the outdoor version at a time when it looks like the days of shooting as a Commonwealth Games sport were numbered, but there was still plenty to aim for.

Next up for Harrison-Lee is a potential trip to the Oceania championships in Sydney in November.

Whether she makes it could depend on how many shooters New Zealand take.

Currently, Harrison-Lee is the fifth ranked woman in New Zealand, and she has one last chance to better that ranking with a strong performance at the South Island Championships, held in Christchurch in three weeks.

PC gone mad - or is it?

I

was once a young girl who loved playing netball, but when rep teams were named, my name wasn’t there.

Did it worry me?

No. I played netball for the fun of it and wasn’t into the pressure-to-perform sort of thing.

In my last year at intermediate I somehow made my club’s A team.

I was a shooter, so the pressure was on, and I hated it.

After that, I stopped playing, only picking it up again a year or two after leaving school for the social aspect.

So, while some people have this week been calling the North Harbour Rugby Union’s decision to dump representative rugby teams from under-14s down PC gone mad, I could kind of understand it.

North Harbour were the first to make the move in terms of rugby, but in sharing a link to a story about the move on their Facebook page, a post on the South Canterbury Cricket

Association Facebook page at the weekend said that the idea behind North Harbour’s move was what was being promoted in sport these days.

So, what was the idea behind it?

It was about growing participation and maximising engagement.

When it came to rugby, numbers were dwindling in the age grades and anecdotal evidence suggested schoolboys who felt that high level performance pathways had been closed to them were likely to walk away altogether.

So, at North Harbour the focus for those under-14 level would now be on player development and having fun, rather than identifying potential superstars and focusing on results.

To some it was the right move and what was best for the kids of today, while others thought it was the most ridiculous thing they’d heard.

Me? I saw it both ways.

view of someone who was once a sport-playing kid myself, and the point of view of a mother of two young boys who were very different in their like – or dislike – for sports, in a sport-mad country.

I played rep tennis growing up where there was a ladder ranking system.

You knew what number you were, and if you wanted to get higher, you would challenge someone higher than you.

How high and how far you went was down to your own choosing, and then your results from there.

In a team sport though, it was a bit more cut-throat.

I trialled for the odd rep netball team growing up and

apart from a last-minute call-up one season, I didn’t make the cut.

It didn’t really bother me.

I knew I was never going to be a Silver Fern.

But there were kids out there who set out to become an All Black, and parents who were up in arms about the fact that their future Richie McCaw now couldn’t play under-11 rep rugby for North Harbour.

According to the NZRU though, rep rugby at such a level was counter-productive.

Those likely to go on to play at an elite level weren’t discovered at such a young age, so they wanted to put the focus on simply retaining players so that when they did hit that level where future stars were identifiable, they were still there and playing.

The big question is, what ultimate impact will the change have on the clubs or organisations that decide to head down that path.

But really, the answer to that is a few years away yet.

In brief Parker v Fury bout Joseph Parker’s promoter has confirmed the New Zealand heavyweight would agree to the substantial challenge of facing Tyson Fury next if the terms were right. The pair have been linked to a possible showdown after Parker pulled the pin on a proposed fight against Dereck Chisora on April 20 because because a contract wasn’t forthcoming and Fury’s new five-fight deal with ESPN put a re-match with Deontay Wilder on the backburner.

Fury has signed a deal with Bob Arum, who has worked with Parker in the past, and the Kiwi’s promoter David Higgins said the stars could align for a mega-fight possibly in Las Vegas.

In brief

Surely Sacred eyes three-peat Exciting three-year-old Surely Scared is favoured to add a third Auckland Classic scalp to his mantle when he lines-up in the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The Tony Pike-trained gelding, who is raced by Raffles Racing, has won three of his five starts to date, including the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1600m) and Gr.2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) on the Auckland track where he has also finished runner-up in the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) and fifth in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m).

“He’s a pretty exciting racehorse,” Raffles Farm Manager Bruce Sherwin said.

“He’s still on his first racing preparation, so he has achieved a lot and anything on Saturday is going to be a bonus.

“In the two Guineas, he showed a really good turn of foot, particularly the first one, the Auckland Guineas, where the race wasn’t run at a solid tempo.

“To be able to quicken off a slow speed is a great asset moving forward.

“In the Avondale Guineas he showed a great turn of foot to put himself into the race, maybe a touch early, and he kept up a strong gallop to the line.

“There are a lot of positives there.”

While Surely Sacred finished fifth behind Long Leaf in the Karaka Million, Sherwin said he was still pleased with his performance.

“The Karaka Million didn’t go quite to plan,” he said.

“He ended up in an awkward place, pocketed back on the inside and got clear with no momentum too late. So the run was still very good in hindsight.”

With a solid form line there has been plenty of interest in Surely Scared, however, Sherwin said no offers will be considered until after Saturday’s race.

“There has been interest from Hong Kong and as a gelding the offers are becoming quite tempt-

Sherwin said he has received positive reports from trainer Tony Pike since his victory in the Avondale Guineas earlier this month, but believes his charge will have some strong opposition in Saturday’s contest despite TAB bookmakers marking him as a $3 early favourite for the race.

“The horse is well. The reports from the stable are all positive, so we are just hoping for a good

Surely Sacred has been impressive in his first racing preparation and Sherwin said he could likely head to the spelling paddock after Saturday.

Given that it is still his first racing preparation, it is very much race by race and this might be his grand final for this prep. But we will reassess after Saturday.”

Surely Sacred is the latest emerging talent out of Raffles Farm, which is owned by Malaysian businessman Dato Yap Kim San, and Sherwin is hoping the son of Rock ‘n’ Pop can reach the lofty heights of some other notable graduates.

(Suitable for someone looking for extra hours outside of normal work hours) We are looking for a motivated person to work in our bar facilities at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on a casual basis.

Hours of bar work will be determined by those functions requiring bar service, but will normally be within 6.30pm-10.30pm, although at other times when needed.

You will be required to help maintain stock levels, clean and provide a high standard of service to our clients. An ability to provide fast and efficient service during peak demand periods. While a current bar managers license would be an advantage, training to obtain a Bar Managers License will be offered to the right person.

Ticket Sales Assistant

(Suitable for someone looking for extra hours outside of normal work hours) A Casual Position to provide Ticket Sales during evening performances and times where additional staff is needed to cover ticket sales for evening performances.

The hours of work will be as required but will normally be 6.30pm - 10.00pm although some flexibility is required.

Experience in ticket sales and/or customer service to a high standard would be an advantage although full training will be offered to the right person. The ability to think on your feet and work within a small team for the benefit of a community facility is essential.

Cleaners

A casual position now exists for a cleaner to assist with maintaining the Event Centre to a high standard of cleanliness. Hours can be varied and, in some cases, made to suit. A level of fitness is required due to working on steps and stairs in the auditorium.

Marshall outsprints rivals Glen Marshall proved too strong in the bunch sprint to take victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Hinds Seed Cleaning 49km handicap event on Sunday.

With a number of riders in contention coming into the final kilometre, it was anyone’s race, with Marshall taking the initiative and leading out strongly, holding off all challengers to the line.

His efforts earned him the 97-year-old Boomerang Cup, one of the oldest cups in the trophy cabinet. Don Sutton was in the thick of the finish to snare second place, while John Uden produced his best performance of the year to take the third-place spoils.

Andrew Shepherd, Ronnie Campbell, and Brent Kircher rounded out the top six.

Tony Ward claimed fastest time honours, riding the distance in 79.11 minutes, while co-marker Brad Hudson took second fastest time, and Dave Knight the third best time.

The juniors and division two contested a 17km handicap event and Ethan Titheridge had it all his own way, taking line honours and fastest time, riding the

course in 29.46 minutes.

Making it a Titheridge double was his father Drew securing the division two honours and also recording the fastest time.

Brian Ellis, riding his home course, took second place with Janette Hooper coming in third.

Next week the club will contest a 60km handicap event around the Blackbridge block.

Des Hasler took Manly from perennial battlers to two-time premiers in his previous Sea Eagles stint, but Daly Cherry-Evans insists 2019 can’t just be lost to the beginning of a long-term rebuild.

Manly are desperate to turn a new page after a drama-plagued 2018 season. Warriors will cope without Johnson - Kearney When an NRL club’s off-season story is all about the departure of a long-serving star and their risky method to replace him, it usually spells trouble.

Yet Warriors coach Stephen Kearney insists he’s sleeping easily, confident he has the halfback personnel to fill Shaun Johnson’s boots and the team structure to make it a seamless process.

Kearney, locked in as coach until the end of 2022, insists his players have come to grips with the November 28 bombshell announcement that a disgruntled Johnson was moving on, leaving a hole made more cavernous by the

departure of understudy Mason Lino.

Simon Mannering has also retired, wiping 301 games of experience from their roster, while a host of solid performers have also exited.

Dragons front-rower Leeson Ah Mau is the only notable acquisition – effectively replacing James Gavet – in the club’s most muted recruitment haul for several seasons.

By not replacing Johnson, the Warriors have oodles of room to move under the salary cap.

However, the apparent downgrading of their roster has

convinced many commentators the men from Auckland won’t repeat last season’s drought-breaking effort to reach the finals.

The playmaking pressure on 32-year-old Blake Green will be intense, with his halves partner set to be a debutant – either Panthers reserve grade recruit Adam Keighran or Junior Kiwis star Chanel Harris-Tevita.

Kearney likes what he’s seen from the pair and believes there’s the proven performers around them to ensure no drop off from last year’s eighth placed finish.

“These young guys aren’t Shaun so it will be a different style,” Kear-

ney said. “We feel they’re ready.

“It’s been our job in the footy department to get them up to speed and put as much work into them as possible.

“The important thing is that we’re not sending them out by themselves. They’ll have experienced guys around them and the sort of pack to help them navigate what’s going to come at them.”

Issac Luke, Adam Blair and Tohu Harris provide a tough foundation but Kearney is expecting the biggest gains to be made from third and fourth-season veterans like Bunty Afoa, Isaiah Papali’i and Jazz Tevaga up front, along with

hulking wingers David Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo.

Captain and Dally M medallist Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will be more important than ever in Johnson’s absence. The metre-eating fullback set the tone in the opening minutes of the first-round win over Souths last season, making a miraculous try-saving tackle on Alex Johnston.

It ignited a five-match winning start, from which they never dropped out of the top eight.

A club record eight wins on the road and a new-found steel when defending their tryline were stand out featuresy.

Squire no certainty for Japan

T

here was a subtle shift in messaging from All Blacks coach Steve Hansen last week that signalled Liam Squire’s presence at the World Cup shouldn’t be taken as a given.

Hansen didn’t go so far as to say there has been a change in thinking in their blindside pecking order, but perhaps more revealingly, he said the All Blacks haven’t yet found a player who has successfully replaced Jerome Kaino.

The best way to interpret that is to conclude the All Blacks are no longer convinced that Squire is capable of being the player they need at the World Cup – which is a departure from where things were only six months ago even.

After two consecutive destructive tests against the Wallabies last year, Squire was riding high, tracking towards becoming the relentlessly physical, combative blindside flanker the All Black were looking for.

He wasn’t quite Kaino, but he was getting towards being that same sort of influence and presence.

If Hansen had been asked at that time whether he felt he would have the combative and explosive player he needed in the No. 6 jersey at the 2019 World Cup, the answer would have been yes.

He made that clear when he was questioned about the potential use of Scott Barrett as a blindside and after the topic was dragged into the obscure, Hansen brought things to an abrupt end by saying anyone who wanted to wear the All Blacks No 6 jersey would have to prove they were better than Squire and as far as the coach was concerned, the chasing pack weren’t particularly close.

But the back half of 2018 saw Squire battle with injury and inevitably that impacted on his form.

In the big tests against England and Ireland, Squire went missing in a way Kaino never would have.

They were bruising tests, intensely physical and demanding – exactly the sort of games in which Squire should have thrived.

And yet he didn’t.

It’s not the All Blacks way to be openly critical but there would have been some disappointment that they didn’t get more out of Squire – that he wilted in the oppressive heat of those battles.

To compound matters, Vaea Fifita delivered the best blindside performance of the season against Italy in the last test of the year.

It would be easy enough to say it was only Italy and therefore has to be judged in that context but a thumping tackle is a thumping

Liam Squire in action against the Wallabies last year. tackle no matter the opposition and Fifita made so many in Rome that it demanded a bit of a rethink from the selectors as to where things were poised.

What’s forced more of a rethink and ultimately led to Hansen saying that the position is now wide open, is Squire’s decision to sign with a Japanese club after the World Cup. Hansen has never been petulant or spiteful towards players who remain available but have pending offshore contracts.

He was willing to take Colin Slade to the World Cup in 2015 and Aaron Cruden and Charlie Faumuina both played against the Lions in 2017 before heading

But in 2015 when the All Blacks were inundated with back-three options, Charles Piutau missed out and it was his decision to sign with Ulster that ultimately cost him.

And last year Lima Sopoaga wasn’t required for All Blacks duty before he joined Wasps.

Leaving, won’t in itself have scuppered Squire’s World Cup dream but it will count against him if the likes of Fifita, Shannon Frizell and Jackson Hemopo deliver quality performances that excite the selectors.

In a close-run thing, the players who have signed up to stay in New Zealand will always have

the selection advantage and the problem now for Squire is that he is going to have to deliver the most compelling evidence to convince the selectors there is a discernible difference in what he’s offering compared with the other contenders.

And his second problem is that if he can’t unequivocally re-establish that he’s the best man to start at blindside in the big games at the World Cup, then he may not even make the squad for Japan at all.

If Sam Cane recovers from his broken neck would anyone bet against the All Blacks using Ardie Savea and Scott Barrett as their loose forward bench cover in the big games?

Given Squire’s experience it would be a surprise to see him discarded from the mix altogether but then again if Cruden hadn’t damaged his knee in 2015, he may not have made the squad anyway as his lack of versatility would have counted against him.

Cruden needed to be seen as the starting No 10 to have made it to England and right now the same may be true of Squire to make it to Japan.

If he can’t prove he’s the best man to start at No 6 then he may not be going to the World Cup because as Hansen says, the selectors have some big decisions to make this year.

New boys dominate on court Men dominated proceedings when the Waireka Croquet Club held its annual golf croquet club championships on Saturday.

In what was a rare result, Bill Allnutt won the premier title, Brian Goodwin won the intermediate title and Colin Lamb won the junior title.

For a club that has been dominated by women in terms of membership in recent years, it was unusual for men to take all three titles, but the club’s male membership had been on the up this season, club spokesperson Audrey Leath said.

Of the three big winners on Saturday, both Goodwin and Lamb were new to the sport this summer, with Goodwin’s handicap having improved dramatically in the few months he’d been playing meaning he was already playing in the intermediate grade.

Saturday’s club championships were the last time croquet would be played on the Waireka greens this season.

Their lawns underwent a makeover last year which wasn’t quite completed by the start of the season, so the club elected to finish it towards the end of the season.

That work, which included irrigation going in and a huge amount of soil to go down, needed to start now so from here until the end of the season Waireka’s play would take place on the grass at the Allenton Croquet Club.

The croquet season was set to run through until mid-April.

Home start to Heartland draw

Mid Canterbury’s 2019 Heartland Championship rugby campaign will begin against the side that brought their 2018 season to an end.

The 2019 draw was released by the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday, revealing that Mid Canterbury would play host to Horowhenua-Kapiti when the competition kicked off on August 24.

Horowhenua-Kapiti were the team that both started and ended Mid Canterbury’s season in 2018, with the Hammers picking up a win over them in round one before losing the one that really mattered at the end.

Mid Canterbury headed to Foxton in round one last season and

had a dream start to the season, beating Horowhenua-Kapiti 3024, but things didn’t go to plan from there.

Mid Canterbury won only three matches and just scraped through into the top eight of the 12-team competition, courtesy of a player eligibility indiscretion from West Coast resulting in them being docked points.

While the top four played off for the Meads Cup, Mid Canterbury were among the next four battling it out for the Lochore Cup, where they found themselves facing Horowhenua-Kapiti in the semi-finals. This time, in Levin, things didn’t go their way and Mid Canterbury’s season came to an end with a 34-24 loss.

It was one of Mid Canterbury’s

least successful recent Heartland campaigns, but this year, hopes are high of a different outcome.

There has been a change in the coaching structure, with Sean Carter gone and his assistants from last year Jason Rickard and Dale Palmer staying on to form a coaching partnership, with assistance from Glenn Moore.

Moore, the current Black Ferns coach, has returned to live in Ashburton – the place where he grew up – last year and on top of his other commitments took on a director of rugby role for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union.

The last time Moore was involved in Mid Canterbury Rugby was back in 2013 and 2014 when he was the Heartland side’s head coach and in both of those years,

Mid Canterbury won the Meads Cup. To do that again this year, Mid Canterbury will need to produce a lot more than they did in 2018, hopefully starting with a win at home against Horowhenua-Kapiti. Mid Canterbury will then face a haka for the second week in a row when they head to Ruatoria to play East Coast in round two, before playing West Coast in Greymouth in week three.

Mid Canterbury will return home for a derby with neighbours South Canterbury in week four before heading to Gisborne to play Poverty Bay in week five, and then return home to play defending Meads Cup champions Thames Valley in week six.
