Playground safety comes at a cost BY SUE NEWMAN

Constantly changing health and safety regulations and rising user expectations have created a new and difficult environment for playground owners, says Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin. It’s the job of his team to ensure equipment in every one the council’s 29 playgrounds meets health and safety standards. Each is audited annually and with standards constantly changing, the cost of keeping those playgrounds up to scratch is growing, Askin said. The Ashburton Domain’s playground came under fire recently on several fronts and that’s resulted in a long list of work that needs to be carried out over the coming months.
