Punters turned out in good spirits for the Boxing Day trots yesterday. While the trotting action on the track garnered plenty of attention from serious racing aficionados, others were there for the social occasion. Many people packed the picnic hamper and took the kids along for a day out catching up with friends and family. With running races for the kids, a bouncy castle and the balloon man working his magic, there was plenty to keep them entertained. Winchmore trainer Geoff Kelk’s Handsome Hero crossed the line ahead of race favourite Boults on Fire, to give Kelk his 40th win. The horse, owned by Kelk and his wife
Margaret, has now earned more than $11,000 in stakes. Weedons trainer Nigel McGrath also turned in an impressive result in the Ashburton Cup race with a stable trifecta, with Classie Brigade leading ahead of Maverick and Ears Burning in third. The festive mood at yesterday’s meet belied the fact the Boxing Day meet is under threat, with falling crowds and less on-course betting each year Last year the on-course turnover was $105,000 but this figure still falls well short of the $206,000 collected at Westport. Traditionally the Ashburton meet has been part of many people’s Boxing Day routine, however turnover has almost halved year-on-year for some time. Changes in liquor licensing have also
played a part in discouraging revellers who had established reunions in the carpark each year. At this point the Ashburton Boxing Day meet is missing from Harness Racing New Zealand’s draft meeting calendar for the 2017 season. Figures for yesterday’s meet were not available at the time the Guardian went to print. Meanwhile, other people made haste to grab a bargain at the Boxing Day sales, with local outlets reportedly busy with early-bird shoppers yesterday morning in particular.
