It is only a matter of time before the shoddy state of Thompsons Track causes a serious accident, says a Mid Canterbury motorist. The Ashburton District Council is blaming recent wet weather and increasing numbers of heavy vehicles for road wear and tear in some areas. John Hendry of Rakaia was travelling on Thompsons Track recently at night, when he suddenly hit a pothole between Somerton Road and Hatfield Road. “It was a pretty solid hit, I smacked it a
beauty,” Hendry said. “I had no chance to avoid it.” He said he had been surprised afterwards to find he had not blown a tyre, or damaged the suspension in his car. He planned to have the wheel alignment checked. He said the section of road was in terrible condition, probably due to increased use by heavy vehicles. There was not only potholes, but the side of the road was in poor condition. He was a regular user of the road and it had become worse in recent months, despite the Ashburton District Council

having repaired areas. “It is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident caused by loss of control due to the road condition,” he said. Council roading manager Brian Fauth said Thompsons Track was a priority for rehabilitation work. More than eight kilometres of the total 39 kilometres of the road had been rehabilitated and strengthened in the past four years.
