It is only a matter of time before the shoddy state of Thompsons Track causes a serious accident, says a Mid Canterbury motorist.

The Ashburton District Council is blaming recent wet weather and increasing numbers of heavy vehicles for road wear and tear in some areas.

John Hendry of Rakaia was travelling on Thompsons Track recently at night, when he suddenly hit a pothole between Somerton Road and Hatfield Road.

“It was a pretty solid hit, I smacked it a

beauty,” Hendry said. “I had no chance to avoid it.”

He said he had been surprised afterwards to find he had not blown a tyre, or damaged the suspension in his car.

He planned to have the wheel alignment checked.

He said the section of road was in terrible condition, probably due to increased use by heavy vehicles. There was not only potholes, but the side of the road was in poor condition.

He was a regular user of the road and it had become worse in recent months, despite the Ashburton District Council

having repaired areas.

“It is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident caused by loss of control due to the road condition,” he said.

Council roading manager Brian Fauth said Thompsons Track was a priority for rehabilitation work. More than eight kilometres of the total 39 kilometres of the road had been rehabilitated and strengthened in the past four years.

Water races disappearing

As part of its planned programme of stockwater race closures, the Ashburton District Council last week signed off the end of the historic farm water supply system over another 23 kilometres.

Five property owners will be affected by the closure of 1.3 kilometres of the Maronan race and another two will be using alternative water supplies when 3 kilometres of the Waimarama Road race are closed.

Just over seven kilometres of water race will be closed between Adam Jackson Road and Storriers Road, affecting seven properties and almost 11 kilometres on the Rokeby School Road, affecting 15 properties.

While it has ticked off closing four more stretches of stockwater race, the council has decided to take a breather on the controversial Rakaia Barrhill closure.

Several attempts have been made to close this race over the

past 10 years, but all have failed on the back of strong opposition from a number of users.

A section of this race (about 11 kilometres) was closed last year because that section had 100 per cent support from property owners but a number of land owners on other sections of the race have no cost effective alternatives to the open race system and continued to oppose total closure.

The council decided it would hold off total closure of the race and would leave a stretch at the top end and at the Rakaia settlement.

The council had already done exhaustive work on the Rakaia Barrhill race and it was now out of options for the two stretches where opposition was strongest, said council assets manager Andrew Guthrie “This decision won’t however, stop us looking at selective areas where there’s support; there are race areas where we can still expedite possible closure,” he said.

A special afternoon tea was held for her to celebrate her years of dedication to a job she loves.

After first arriving at Phoenix when her daughter attended, she went on to relieve while doing her playcentre training, and says she’s “been here ever since”.

Policeman charged with murder

Police say they are “shocked and dismayed” after one of their own was alleged to have shot two people in Invercargill Tuesday night.

Constable Benjamin Peter McLean has been charged with the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of a man she was believed to be in a relationship with.

McLean appeared before Judge Mark Callaghan at a Southland Hospital bedside Invercargill District Court hearing yesterday afternoon.

The 47-year-old is charged with murdering Verity Ann McLean and the attempted murder of Garry William Duggan.

McLean was remanded in custody by consent to May 18, when

he will appear in the Invercargill High Court by video link.

Two senior CIB police from outside Invercargill will help lead the investigation to help police remain impartial as they investigate the case.

Ballistics specialists will help police reconstruct what happened Tuesday night. Around 30 staff from inside and outside the district were working on the case.

Speaking to press at the Invercargill Central Police Station, Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham said the priority for police was to remain impartial while the investigation was carried out.

He acknowledged the impact the incident was having on the

wider families of the three people involved but also on the “police family” in Invercargill.

He emphasised that while there was high public interest in the case, McLean had the same rights as any other member of the public and as the matter was before courts he was constrained in the information he could provide.

The second victim, Duggan, called police to the scene Tuesday night.

“We are committed to being professional and diligent and our focus is to understand exactly what has happened,” Basham said.

Police said Duggan was yesterday in a stable condition in hospital.

IDEA strike action to hit Ashburton

Between 30 and 40 Ashburton IDEA services support and administration workers will go on strike this morning over the lack of progress on a new collective agreement.

The last pay rise workers received was over two years ago and that was pretty minimal, says local E tu Industry member Elaine Alridge.

The decision to take strike action, however, was not taken lightly, she said.

“Our job is caring for people and we have to think of them, but sometimes you reach a point where you just have to take a stand.”

Ashburton union members will be among 3000 IDEA services workers striking between 8.30am and 9.30am today. The strike will see staff gather on the East Street chessboard.

While the stop-work is about pay, it is also about health and safety issues and service reviews, Aldridge said.

Service review had not taken place in Ashburton but in other branches they had resulted in staff losing hours, she said.

“In some cases that loss of hours has been quite substantial.”

The last time care workers took on their employer it was over sleepover allowances. At that time staff were paid just $34 as a night allowance and were often up several times each night with clients.

They won the right to be paid hourly for this work, albeit at the minimum wage rate.

The union had been working to secure a pay rise for staff for some time, but this had been met with a flat ‘no’, and that left little option but strike action, Aldridge said.

“We have to make a stand.”

Bargaining began in October last year and E tu Industry Co-ordinator Alastair Duncan said that support staff spent their working days enabling New Zealanders with intellectual disabilities to lead the best possible lives. “In turn staff want IDEA to deliver the guaranteed and stable hours that enable the workforce to plan their own lives,” he said.

IDEA was going through a major restructure and staff were right to be concerned about their jobs and the impact on the people they supported, Duncan said.

Workers were due a pay rise last and a small down payment was requested then.

“We have had a resounding “no offer” ever since.”

On top of this, the council’s contractor was working “very hard” to repair roads, including Thompsons Track, affected by recent wet weather.

Heavy vehicle usage on the district’s roads also continued to rise, which increased wear and tear.

“But council is striving to utilise its available budget to maintain the current level of service for road users,” Fauth said.

Break out the winter woollies Chilly weather is heralding winter’s approach with frost and snow likely for the south of New Zealand next week.

Meteorologists stopped short of describing it as an arctic blast but said the cooler air coming from the South Pole would be widely felt with temperatures plunging down by 5 to 10 degrees.

Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll said there would be two blasts of cold weather, one early next week with another, more aggressive one close on its heels at the end of the week.

“Certainly colder conditions than it’s been, especially in the South Island where there may be some frost and some snow in the

higher elevations.

He said it might be time to flip the summer wardrobe of T-shirts and jandals and pull out the winter gear.

Noll said the temperatures, which could dip below zero in the central plateaus and areas in the south prone to chillier weather, would be felt more acutely because of the recent milder temperatures.

Noll said winter was quickly approaching, but those who preferred the warmth would be happy to hear the milder weather would return mid-May. “The door will open back up to the milder weather in May and it does look relatively dry.”

Noll advised people to make the most of this week before the cold took hold.

The sun is set to give way to heavy cloud and rain by the end of the week, making for a shortlived reprieve barely a fortnight on from Cyclone Cook.

MetService meteorologist April Clarke said the weather would turn wet today or tomorrow, particularly at the southwestern end of the country.

Parts of the country worst hit by the torrential rain in recent weeks will not escape either, the MetService predicts heavy rain in the northeast of the country later in the week.

Loving 60 years together

Robin and Diana Bruce’s recipe for a long and happy marriage is simple – sharing their interests and doing things together.

Today they celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and they won’t be taking it easy.

Their celebrations will last two weeks and will see them flying from one end of New Zealand to the other.

And that’s not uncommon for a couple who regularly fly to Australia to horse or A&P shows and who are still active members of horse event judging panels.

Robin grew up on the family’s Pendarves farm. He met Diana, an inner city Christchurch girl at a Hunt Ball.

Both were dating other people but a shared love of horses provided the foundation on which their relationship was established and grew.

Marrying Robin meant marrying a farm and after a honeymoon in the Bay of Islands she came home to the reality of rural life.

“I was a city girl, an only child and it was very difficult for a while settling in to feeding men every day and doing farm chores.

“I remember Robin’s mother said that if I baked something every morning I’d keep up with things.

“Eventually she was amazed at how I knuckled down and did it.”

The newness disappeared and she quickly realised farm life was a wonderful way to live.

“I loved every minute of it,” she said.

Farming was in Robin’s blood and he also became involved in the political side of the business, carving out a long career as an active member and president of Federated Farmers and a long standing member of the Pest Board.

He is a life member of the Royal Agricultural Society and national chair of horse stewards.

Both are grade one judges.

In brief Off-licence hours A story in last Saturday’s Guardian on the Ashburton District’s new local alcohol policy contained incorrect hours for off-licences.

As the result of an appeal these have been changed from the hours in the council’s original policy to 7am – 9.30pm. The policy has been a work in progress for more than five years as it went through community consultation and then several appeals. It is now likely to be implemented within three months. It sees an earlier closing time of 2am imposed on clubs, bars and nightclubs along with a oneway door policy applying from 1am in Ashburton. The one-way door policy will not apply to rural bars.

Museum attendance Ashburton’s Museum is breaking all records for attendance with numbers almost doubling its target with 10,382 people visiting since July 1. And that’s a hugely satisfying outcome, said director Tanya Robinson as the usual pattern is for attendance numbers to drop after an initial burst after an opening. The museum opened in February 2015.

Celebrating 60 years of marriage, Robin and Diana Bruce. did a three day stint in the Welsh Pony ring at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.

As a couple, Robin and Diana developed their love of horses into breeding Welsh Mountain ponies.

They built up a stock of mares and were the second people in New Zealand to fly a stallion in from England.

For a time they also bred miniature horses.

“We did this together, it’s like the whole thing of farming, doing it together,” Diana said.

Their pony stud continues with daughter Sue in Auckland.

Today their son Stephen continues the family farming tradition, but he’s taken a major change of direction away from the sheep and crop farming that were his mum and dad’s bread and butter, into dairy.

Robin looks at the change of land use in the Pendarves area and says there is no way farmers in his day could have imagined the amount of water that lay beneath their farms.

“I’ve got the original water consent for the farm. It was for a 65 metre bore,” he said.

They moved from the farm to a lifestyle block on Wakanui Road in the late 1960s where they continued to breed ponies, later moving into Ashburton for a few years before upping stakes and heading to Auckland.

During that time Robin continued as a horse show judge in both Auckland and Australia.

“Moving to Auckland was an interesting thing to do at that stage of our lives.

“We knew no one but when we left we’d made friends for life,” Diana said.

They look back without regrets and say there are no real secrets to a 60 year marriage.

Their generation, however, took their marriage vows seriously, Diana said.

“We don’t fight or say nasty words to one another. We’ve always done everything together, most of the things in our lives really.”

Their anniversary celebrations start on Friday with church and a morning tea, continue to a Sunday family lunch and on Wednesday they’ll fly to Auckland for more celebrations, returning home a week later.

The high energy couple have travelled extensively and are not ruling out more travel in the future “Sixty years, they’ve gone by very quickly and we’ve been very, very lucky,” Diana said.

A small stretch of Tancred Street will shortly be off limits to parking for three hours each day after it is re-designated a loading zone for homewares retailer Briscoes.

The designation has been approved by the Ashburton District Council and this will see a two car park space used between 6am and 9am each day for unloading trucks by forklifts.

Emergency call-outs Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members had been beaten to the job when they turned up to a callout at the Ashburton golf course yesterday about 3.15pm. Wiring in a ride-on mower had ignited, melting plastic sheathing. However, golf course personnel were on the case quickly and dealt to it with a fire extinguisher. Brigade members had only to inspect the mower when they arrived. St John responded to a call-out to a collapsed patient at Baring Square West on Anzac Day, at 11.23am. The female patient was transported in an ambulance to Ashburton Hospital.

Giving you the opportunity to express your opinions I

have always been a strong advocate for community engagement with our council.

Even before I was elected as a councillor, I thought it was important that everyone should have an opportunity to express their opinions on significant changes or developments in our district.

As your mayor, I think community consultation is vital in forging relationships between the community and the council, enabling ideas to be exchanged and residents to be informed about council plans.

It is essential that Ashburton residents know they are being heard and the council understands people’s views on any major decisions that they need to make.

At present, the council is consulting the community on four draft policies and one draft bylaw.

The two proposed changes to the existing policy are rating changes for council’s proposed extension to the kerbside col-

It is anticipated that 1100 properties that don’t currently receive the council’s kerbside collection service, will be added to the new rubbish and recycling wheelie bin collection service.

This includes properties in parts of Ashburton, Rakaia, Methven, Fairton, Winslow and Lake Hood.

The new collection service would start on September 1, 2017 for both the additional properties and those already benefiting from the kerbside collection service.

Any feedback that is received on this policy, as well as the other policies and bylaw, will be taken into consideration before the final policies and bylaw are adopted.

Trudeau, Trump clash Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that Canada and the US could suffer a “thickening” border as the Trump administration imposes new tariffs on softwood lumber and trade tensions between the two countries escalate.

Trudeau commented a day after the announcement of new US duties of up to 24 per cent on softwood lumber entering the US from Canada.

Trudeau, leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, said the two countries are economically interconnected, but it’s not a oneway relationship.

“There are millions of good US jobs that depend on the smooth flow of goods, services and people back and forth across our border,” Trudeau said at a news conference.

He cited free trade in the North American auto sector as an example of how a typical car part can cross the border up to six times before it ends up in a finished automobile.

“You cannot thicken this border without hurting people on both sides of it,” Trudeau said.

“Having a good constructive working relationship allows us to work through those irritants.”

The US Navy says aircraft from a carrier strike group headed for the Korean Peninsula are conducting a joint exercise with Japan’s Air Self Defence Forces in waters south of Japan.

A statement released on Wednesday says Japanese aircraft are integrated with ongoing training by the USS Carl Vinson’s air wing.

The exercise includes air training and information sharing to improve joint operation and communication between the two militaries.

It follows a two-day exercise with two Japanese de-

T

he youth of Ashburton has not been portrayed in the best light lately.

With hundreds turning out to a public meeting in the past week to discuss ongoing issues of youth crime in the district, it’s sometimes easy for all the good deeds to go unnoticed.

But, we certainly realise there are many, many positive things going on behind the scenes.

Our young people continue to punch well above their weight in sporting achievements and in cultural and academic fields.

Already in the past few weeks we’ve seen success with our local Highland dancers, rowers, musicians and performers, those attending Anzac services, scouts and fundraisers.

As well as, of course, many, many more that haven’t yet hit the press.

Our council is also keen to promote the good work being undertaken by our young people, and is determined to showcase that during this year’s Student Volunteer Week.

Held from May 1-7, it is being organised by the Ashburton Youth Council, which has teamed up with Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury to get the word out.

We’ve seen the power and success of groups, like the Student Volunteer Army, which sprung up after the Christchurch earthquakes. So let’s encourage our students to get out there and get involved in this initiative.

Organisers say there are many benefits to student volunteering, including giving back to your community, broadening your networks, helping gain practical work experience and opening up doors to amazing opportunities.

It also serves as a chance to thank and support those whose selfless voluntary acts help make this community a great place.

To celebrate the week, the council is running a competition for students of any age to win a $50 Prezzy card. Simply upload a picture of yourself volunteering to the Ashburton Youth Council or Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury Facebook pages to go into the draw to win.

I sat among a group of very frustrated and irate people at the community forum held last week to discuss what could be done to put a stop to the mayhem that a small group of youngsters are causing in our town.

I feel sad for our business owners that continue to have “breakins” and are having to delve into their pockets time after time.

While the police, security firms and social agencies go quietly about their business, nothing is going to change unless the judge who dropped the charges from

these youngsters has a big change of mind! Where was this judge?

Maybe the community should call a meeting with them?

My fear is that if something drastic is not done, someone will take the law into their own hands and that could be nasty.

These young people need to be held accountable for their actions and the damage they are doing.

I hope we see this happen, but somehow I think we are stuck with a system that doesn’t work.

Three things that could kill construction

A2 Milk shares rise to new record

By Paul McBeth A2 Milk Co shares touched a record high after the milk marketer raised its annual revenue guidance following better-than-expected sales in the third quarter.

The shares rose as high as $3.44 and were recently up 5.9 per cent to $3.39, adding to a 50 per cent gain so far this year.

The Auckland-based, Sydneyheadquartered company forecast revenue of $525 million in the year ending June 30, up from $352.8 million a year earlier, it said in a statement. A2 generated sales of $388 million in the nine months ended March 31, with third-quarter infant formula sales exceeding

expectations. “Demand has been particularly strong in Australia, but also through the cross-border e-commerce channel into China,” managing director Geoff Babidge said. “On the assumption of continuing strong demand for a2 Platinum infant formula and production deliveries achieved consistent with the revised production schedule, the company is now expecting infant formula sales for the second half FY17 to exceed sales achieved in first half FY17.”

In February, a2 scaled back its expected growth for infant formula sales as Chinese regulators looked to tighten regulations for sales through online grey market channels. While that weighed on

rivals such as ASX-listed Bellamy’s, a2 has managed to navigate the changes with little impact on sales so far.

Hamilton Hindin Greene director Grant Hamilton said a2 hasn’t been held back by changes to Chinese regulations, with consumers in the world’s second-biggest economy embracing its infant formula product.

“Their product is getting very well accepted in China,” Williamson said. “The Chinese do go that extra bit for their children.”

Williamson said a2 will probably be able to self-fund its expansion into other markets while being able to reward shareholders with dividends.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman has signed off on spending an extra $18 million for the Christchurch hospital acute services building, which is dealing with a nationwide issue of rising construction costs.

The increased funding lifts will pay for a fit-out of two 32-bed wards and a bridge-link on the hospital campus, taking the total project cost to $463 million, Coleman said in a statement.

Once it’s finished, the acute services building will house 12 operating theatres and procedure rooms, acute medical assessment, an expanded intensive care unit and emergency department, and a radiology department.

“The Government approved the additional $18 million in the past week to cover the shortfall created by cost escalation pressures in the Canterbury construction market,” Coleman said. “The acute services building is already the largest government project in the Canterbury rebuild.”

The project has already faced problems before today’s bigger bill, getting a mixed report from the Office of the Auditor-General last year over the lack of thought put in as to how the Canterbury District Health Board would be involved, unclear governance arrangements and noting the strained relationship between the DHB and ministry.

Rider Levett Bucknall’s trends in property and construction report for this year’s second quarter names these three factors as threats to the demand for new building.

“Three things, either alone or in combination, would need to happen to reverse the current longterm drivers of building activity,” the company’s report says.

The first would be a large reduction in visas issued by the New Zealand Government for permanent and long-term migrants.

While an election year carries the risks of populist policies, we note that unlike in the US and much of Europe, the New Zealand economy continues to grow strongly.

Chance to visit award-winning farm Mid Canterbury farmers and interested members of the public are being offered the opportunity to visit an award-winning farm at a field day in the Greta Valley on May 4.

The Douglas-Clifford family were presented with the Ballance Farm Environment Supreme Regional Award for their sheep, beef and deer operation at an awards evening held earlier this month.

They also won the region’s Hill Laboratories Harvest Award, Massey University Innovation Award and the Farm Stewardship Award in partnership with QEII National Trust and New Zealand Farm Environment Trust.

The 2950ha Stonyhurst farm carries 70 per cent sheep, 25 per cent cattle and 5 per cent deer.

Sandra Taylor, the judging coordinator for the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards, said the field day is a rare opportunity for people to see how an award-winning farm operates.

They also noted the family uses technology to drive productivity and streamline management decisions which are aimed at protecting natural resources such as soil for future generations.

Protect against leptospirosis The wet of winter is coming and farmers should be planning annual leptospirosis boosters for herds to protect themselves and animals from contracting the disease, says WorkSafe programme manager agriculture Al McCone says.

“Leptospirosis can be passed from animals to humans. Vaccinating animals, controlling rodents, practising good hygiene and using protective equipment, can help protect you, and your family and workers,” McCone said.

“Those at highest risk include farmers, particularly sheep, beef, deer and dairy, their families and anyone living or working on-farm. Human cases of leptospirosis infection have declined in recent decades due to greater awareness and robust vaccination programmes, but people still need to take the precautions as there was a spike in Northland last year.”

Leptospirosis is transmitted through infected urine, via cuts or cracks in the skin on bare hands or feet or through mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth; even a fine spray of contaminated urine or contact with urine-contaminated water can cause infection.

Simple things such as licking your lips or eating or smoking without first thoroughly washing and drying your face and hands, can result in you becoming infected.

Any warm-blooded mammal can be infected. Protecting feed supplies from rodents is essential. Contaminated rivers and lakes can be sources of infection too. On farms, flood water, and waterlogged paddocks and waterways are a particular risk.

Initial human symptoms may be ‘flu like’.

In severe cases, leptospirosis can cause significant issues and permanent complications, such as kidney failure.

Anyone who experiences leptospirosistype symptoms, or suspects they have been exposed, needs to see a doctor within 24 hours to get tested and start antibiotic treatment. They should tell the doctor leptospirosis may be the cause of their illness.

Mr McCone says it’s also important to make sure farm dogs and other animals which can carry the disease are up to date with vaccines too.

Pesto and basil stuffed chicken thigh fillets 8 Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs 3T basil pesto 1/4 C basil leaves 1/2 C fresh breadcrumbs 1/4 C grated parmesan 2T pine nuts ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. Lay the 8 Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs out flat. Smear with basil pesto and top with a layer of basil leaves.

■■ Roll up and place in a lightlygreased baking dish that holds the chicken snugly, about 18cm x 24cm.

■■ Combine the breadcrumbs, parmesan and pine nuts and scatter over the thighs. Bake for 1 hour until cooked through.

■■ Serve with mashed potatoes or polenta and steamed vegetables.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their monthly meeting at the Ashburton Senior Centre on April 20 at 2pm with 28 members in attendance. After a short meeting, Trevor Gamblin, who was our Guest Speaker, showed us slides of the Ashburton Prize winning gardens 2017. Each and every one of the gardens, though in different categories, projected the careful design and attention to colour, textures and detail.

Ashburton Men’s Friendship Club April Report Meetings second Tuesday of month, Seniors Centre 206 Cameron St, 9.30am.

Our main speaker was from Selwyn Sloan from the Ashburton office of Forsyth Barr Limited, Share Brokers and Investment Advisors, which has 24 other New Zealand offices.

Worldwide share buying and selling is possible with Forsyth Barr having strong connections in USA, UK, Europe, Australia and Hong Kong and keep up to date with relevant knowledge of the investment opportunities in these markets.

The USA market has been affected by Donald Trump’s Presidential style and in the UK Brexit decision has impacted likewise in the UK and Europe Some shares offered only modest divi-

dends but had good growth prospects while others paid higher dividends but less potential for growth. Companies involved with Technology and Pharmaceuticals were regarded as a good bet Confidence in the economy can change and this can affect the share market.

New Zealand offered investment interest rates which were the highest in the world which attracts money away from the share market.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club A good number of Pakeke Lions, two visitors and guest speaker Mervyn Jones, attended the April meeting in the MSA restaurant. Pakeke members will be assisting with the annual Wheels Week Parade on May 21 and organising, as a project, the Truck and Machinery Show that follows the parade. Members have been asked to assist with maintenance painting at the Racecourse.

The Guest speaker spoke of his visit to Calcutta where he joined an international group who had volunteered to undertake maintenance on a factory site. The building had been developed as a factory which offered employment to women and girls many of whom had been working on the streets as prostitutes. Many photos depicted the state of streets littered with rubbish, people with stalls trying to make a living sharing the street space with the many forms of transport often overloaded with both people and freight.

Lion Meredith outlined the structure of the Board for the coming year explaining the changes that will be made in regard to the various responsibilities and how roles will be allocated.

Priviledged Member Lion Doug Watson has given the club a framed photograph of Chartering Member Lion George Rountree with the then World President at the inaugural function. Lion Doug also has presented a Wooden Cup crafted by himself for a yet to be determined competition.

Ladies next craft morning at Norma Galway’s on May 8. Following Tail Twister Ron, the meeting closed with National Anthem.

Ashburton U3A A large audience of members and guests welcomed Ross Macmillan to hear a presentation on Farm to Farm International Tours, his family owned business which from small beginnings thirty years ago, morphed into a very successful venture bringing inbound and outbound tours of particular interest to the rural community. Ten years experience in Advisory Services with the Department of Agriculture then later as a private farm consultant was a busy and developing period in New Zealand until Rogernomics came along and things began to change. From the first tour to Brisbane for the World Expo, the tours

now include conference events, farmstays, Japanese tech visits, honeymooners and independent travellers. There was a demand for people to sample and experience the ‘real’ countryside with the bonus of getting to know the locals.

From observations of how things are done in other world markets and comparing them to our own, in particular sheep and the variable return when compared with income generated elsewhere, caused Ross to question our pattern of selling, that perhaps we should change our thinking more towards ‘value added’ through internationalism, finding new niche opportunities. He cited Scandinavian wealth in particular because they have held on to their brands (eg Volvo, Ikea etc) and the income returns to them.

1970-84, post WW11, New Zealand was buoyant, there was subsidization, commodity production, development and expansion. New Zealand agriculture was protected, the UK joined the Common Market. The next 15 years 1985-2000 changed completely, a Labour Government came in, there was restructuring, subsidies were removed and life got tougher. Then 2001-2016 there were continuing poor prices, land inflation was rampant along with wage inflation. Kiwis not willing to work in certain fields led to imported labour. The huge increase in technology was influential with food safety, environmental concerns, water pollution and global warming all threatening our clean, green image. Foreign investment reduced our control of our own country, leading to corporate dairy farming and industrial agriculture. Mr Macmillan advocates a restriction on foreign investment and more local ownership with a heavy input of ‘value added’ to the goods New Zealand sells. From exports of around $40b, agriculture makes up 2/3rds of that and 50-60% of our exports are controlled by around eight large companies. We need to be selling the NZ story and be more marketing than production focussed, he said.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday April 24 the President Peter Thomas welcomed 50 plus members to the Annual General Meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

Apologies were received from; Rex Tarbotton Elizabeth Davies, Betty Lovatt, Cath Carr, Colin & Isabel Cameron. Peter moved that they be accepted, seconded

by Evelyn carried. Peter advised that Isabel Cameron was retiring from the committee and thanked her for her contribution since 2014.

Minutes of the AGM 2016 copies had been circulated and as there was no business arising, Natalie Blampied moved they be accepted; seconded by James Greenaway carried.

The report from the President was on the back of the minutes and as there were no questions Peter moved its acceptance seconded by Trevor, carried.

Copies of the audited financial statement had been circulated, and as there were no queries Treasurer Sheila moved that it be accepted, seconded by Peter, carried.

Peter then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Berni Marra, Manager at Ashburton Hospital. Berni gave a presentation on the range of services offered locally under the CDHB. Emphasising that we must continue to be active in keeping our own rural health service and building for the future. Upgrading of wards and services is continuing, and community based health care is very important.

There were several interesting questions and Berni offered to take some matters further. Elaine Busby passed a vote of thanks and presented Berni with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Mid Canterbury Mens Friendship Club A well-attended meeting held at the Ashburton Senior Centre. We were entertained by Mini Speaker Michael Shearer, who gave us an insight into his life history and philosophy, well received.

Main Speaker Michael Holdaway introduced by Doug Anderson gave us an interesting talk on his dentistry and the new technology developing in the industry. He also mentioned his disappointment in the hygiene of many peo-

ple resulting in teeth decay. After many questions a vote of thanks was accorded him by Bob Jones.

President Roger Lake closed the meeting followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

The Plains Ladies Friendship Club Vera Smollett welcomed everyone to our April 24 meeting. 13 apologies. Congratulations were given to those celebrating birthdays and Anniversaries with special mention of an 80th and a 92nd. Well done.

Sympathy was extended to those who had lost loved ones.

Members were reminded of the invitation to the Cancer Society meeting at the Ashburton Events Centre on 4th May - Genes and LifestyleThe treasurer reported that 44 subs had been paid and that the bank balance was healthy.

The Movie for the 1st Wed in May will probably be Beauty and the Beast.

Three Members had attended the AGM in Christchurch with two remits passed “that we now belong to the North/South Island Association of Friendship Clubs” and “that we now adopt the new constitution”.

Following a career in teaching she has been able to help with Adult Literacy and following a chance remark from a family member after three close family members’ funerals she began a new life as a Celebrant and also gained her qualifications as a JP. It is a privilege to be able to share and help plan important occasions in people’s lives. Her other interests are music and her association with the Mid Canterbury Choir and growing Saffron which she and her husband cultivate and sell at the Ashburton Farmer’s market.

Carole was thanked with a fruit tray.

Waireka Croquet Club March/April 2017 Well this is it – the season has ended feeling as though it has barely begun with the many disruptions caused by the inclement weather. Now as I write this the sun is streaming in – a welcome sight after such reluctance over the summer.

The weekend of April 8 and 9 saw the Annual Teams Event being held – this year in the Association Croquet Code.

Four provinces entered. Canterbury, Nelson, Otago and South Canterbury battling it, out for two days in all four grades – A, Intermediate, B and C. Some keen competition was experienced with the final result only becoming clear in the last of the six games each grade on the Sunday.

Canterbury were the eventual winners after close competition against Nelson the runners-up, South Canterbury third and Otago fourth. An enjoyable event held annually and always worthwhile.

This year owing to the large rainfall play was in doubt right up to the Friday morning when our grounds person cleared us for play even though the ground was very wet.

However the Domain staff did a grand job of mowing and sweeping the lawns over the weekend and it all worked out well.

Club competitions were finalised even though the Association side were still working it out 5 days before closing.

The Morrissey Mallet competition was held on the day before closing resulting in a win for Jill Wilce Waireka and Raylene Phillips Waireka in the Hazel Leonard Tray. This is an Annual Competition between Allenton, Methven and Waireka – but usually held in March. It has just been one of those seasons.

Our Mahjong and Euchre winter activities start the first week of May. Keep your eyes on the Daily Diary for the starting times etc and come and enjoy yourselves with likeminded people. Until next Season stay well, warm and happy.

Full field at Anzac Day match Karen Young tees off on the first hole at the Tinwald Golf Club’s Anzac Day tournament on Tuesday.

A full field of golfers took to the greens for the annual tournament to play in a mixed and men’s American foursome tournament.

The leading scores in the mixed section came from Paul Hefford and Bronwyn Flannery 65, Kerry and Maxine Whiting 65.5, Brent Smith and Sue Newman 69, Gordon Rennie and Henny Harrex 69 and Bill and Trish Clarke 69.

In the men’s section, Wayne Mellish and Kieron Gray emerged on top with 65.5 while Chris Bell and Robin Simms, along with Rodney Harris and Ray Wards, all scored 67.

Twos were scored on the day by Bruce and Elizabeth Collins, Paul Hefford and Bronwyn Flannery, Alton Fletcher and Ben King and Brent Smith and Sue Newman.

Canterbury Rural Women has had a busy time over the past month. A site at the South Island Field Days, Rural Women Week and Meals on Wheels delivery has provided a lot of interest.

The Mayoral Mystery Challenge during Rural Women Week was supported by Mayors from Hurunui, Ashburton, Waimate and Mackenzie. Waimate Mayor Craig Rowley took the honours on the day for his three pancakes presented and tasted by the Judges.

The businesses in Ashburton and Geraldine that support Rural Women Members accumulated items for a gift hamper for one lucky shopper during Rural Women Week - congratulations Sue Letham.

Anama Anama Rural women were buzzing after their guided tour through Midlands Apiaries multimillion dollar complex in the Ashburton Business Estate. Established there in 2015 it is already in the process of expansion and producing tonnes of highest grade honey to buyers all over the world.

Mt Somers and Springburn honey as well as supplies from many other local and New Zealand sources are hygienically processed and rigorously checked before export.

Top grade manuka honey is the most expensive and widely sought by overseas buyers.

Johan Marlow, who is also a hobby beekeeper, shared his wide-ranging knowledge of the industry and answered many questions relating to crops, pollination and diseases. Members came away from a fascinating and informative visit, the highlight of our April meeting.

Morning tea was held at Natalie Quantock’s home followed by a short business meeting. Members were thanked for distributing Meals on Wheels and supplying flowers to Ward 6. Interest was shown in After Socks a fundraiser first begun after the Christchurch quake and revived after the Kaikoura quake. These socks are made at the NZ Sock Factory in Ashburton with a red and black and feature the jagged fault reading at the time of the quake.

There was one apology as a member was in hospital at that time.

President Kerry welcomed all members to our meeting on a damp miserable day.

Motto for the month was “Bad weather always looks worse out of a window”.

All the business was dealt with including organising roster for Meals on Wheels for the following week and reminded about next Provincial meeting on 21st April. One of our members has knitted another four rugs for the Children Cancer Ward at Christchurch Public Hospital plus several members are busy knitting scarves and beanies for our project we have this year.

After all business was finished we welcomed Phillipa Reid who spoke to us on their dealings with Starship Hospital when one of their triplets developed heart problems in his early teens.

When the babies were born they were told the two boys had a problem which might have to be dealt with in the future.

One boy was fine but the oldest boy needed surgery and was taken to Auckland for the best of care; now he is very well playing sport again and biking long distances.

As Phillipa said her husband and herself are so grateful for all the care they received while they were up there. When she finished Phillipa was thanked with a fruit tray.

After we closed the meeting it was suggested that we have a collection to be sent up to Auckland and all members agreed to this plus topping it up from funds.

We finished the afternoon with a social time.

Winchmore What a busy month we have had at Winchmore Rural Women Week with many involved and Meals On Wheels, then on April 12 we hosted a Men’s Night for our district men.

Over 60 attended and were very well fed by Winchmore Rural Women members cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

Richard Loe was the guest speaker for the night he is an Ambassador for Farm Safety and spoke to those attending on this subject and other highlights of his life.

Those attending all went home with a Beanie courtesy of Ruralco and a packet of homemade biscuits to have with a cuppa - a very well received evening by those attending.

It was with sadness that we farewelled one of our own Val Le Lievre but were privileged to be able to supply the food and refreshments on behalf of her family after the service.

At our branch meeting on the April 19 we were treated to a talk by one of our members Jenni Wiggins who told us about her experience on a remote station in Australia where she cared for a young woman who had been involved in an horrendous farm accident, Gail had lost one arm and the other was damaged so badly it is unable to be used. As well as telling us this personal story Jenni told us about day to day living in such a remote area and some of the situations she had to deal with.

Our annual quiz is to be held on May 19 at the hall so get your team in asap.

Lynnford On a miserable wet Thursday afternoon 13 members were present at the home of Mary Miles.

Marion had Meals on Wheels delivery organised with the drivers and helpers required.

Canterbury Rural Women Week was discussed which was held the week before Easter over four days.

Monday was a morning bike ride to Lake Hood, and a bus trip to Geraldine in the afternoon; Tuesday, a Mayoral Cook off, with Ashburton, Waimate, Hurunui and Mackenzie Mayors; Wednesday a visit to Vet club and learning to keep safe around dogs.

Thursday, a combined event with CWI at Methven for “Walk the World” fundraiser for ACWW. The Kirwee Field Day was successful with the Rural Women having on sale the two new books published for children, about keeping safe around dogs.

The Cooking class on April 20 was finalised with two more helpers offering themselves for the day with a full class of 24 children enrolled.

June 10 will be the Hinds Ploughing Match. In the absence of the President, Judith will be the convenor for the day and will have more information at the next meeting.

Raffle proceeds on the day will go towards supplying books to local area school libraries.

After the meeting, Mary showed us her Christmas decorations she had bought while on holiday in Denmark visiting family and those gifted to her from family. They are a different style to what is available in New Zealand Next meeting at 11.30am, May 4 at Nosh.

Good showing at champs

The Ashburton region continues to produce some outstanding results in karate, particularly at the youth level.

A contingent of members from JION International Karate Dojo Ashburton competed at the New Zealand Open Karate Championships in Christchurch recently with a number of medals claimed over the weekend.

More than half a dozen of the Ashburton competitors took part in the championship with three managing top three placings and five medals being brought back to Ashburton.

Taylah Burrowes led the charge for Ashburton on the first day of the championships which were for the 13-year-old and younger competitors.

Burrowes placed first in Kata out of an intermediate division of four competitors.

Winning her first round meant she was able to advance straight to the final which she also won to claim the gold medal.

Later in the day she placed third in the premier F12-13-yearold Kumite 40kg division. After again winning her first round, Burrowes was beaten in the second but in a fight-off for third she claimed the bronze, winning 3-0.

Madison Soal grabbed Ashburton’s other medal on the opening day when she picked up silver in the F10-11-year-old development Kumite.

On Sunday, the championships shifted to the older divisions of 14-year-old and older and Kyle Cabangun produced some good results.

He picked up silver in the Cadet 14-15-year-old Intermediate Kata in a division of five competitors, winning his first round before being beaten for the gold in the final. He then fought in the premier division of the Kumite a few hours later and won his first round match-up 5-1 before claiming gold 2-1 in the final.

Pacquiao and Horn crossed paths for the first time at yesterday’s press conference at Suncorp Stadium, the venue where Arum believes the undefeated Australian welterweight can etch his name in boxing history.

Co-captains named The Jillaroos have welcomed back co-captains Ruan Sims and Steph Hancock in their 25-strong squad for their Anzac Test clash with the Kiwi Ferns. Reynolds, off contract at the end of the year, is understood to have agreed on a four-year deal with the Tigers where he’ll replace Parramatta-bound five-eighth Mitchell Moses. His Tigers deal is reportedly worth close to a million dollars a year.

“After Tauranga he’ll go to Te Rapa on May 6 for the open hurdle and then back there again a fortnight later for the Waikato Hurdles.

“He goes well left-handed so that’s his first target and potentially we could look at going to Australia for some steeplechases for him.

“I don’t think he’s got the speed

to go hurdling over there, they would go a bit quick for him.”

Ngatira Gold finished third in last year’s Great Northern Hurdles and following a spell he successfully returned to action at Rotorua earlier this month.

The Gold Centre gelding, whose owners include Logan and her mother Donna, won a highweight event in the hands of Gary Walsh, who will again take the reins at Tauranga.

Meanwhile, Ngatira Gold’s talented stablemate Iwannadancelikehim has been sent for his winter break.

“He’s a good horse and we’ll have him back for the spring,” Logan said.

Iwannadancelikehim collected the fourth win of his career last preparation when he downed the Group Three winner Serious Satire at Ellerslie.

Cambridge jockey Zy Nor Azman will be side-lined for the foreseeable future following a fall at Avondale on Tuesday. “He’s battered and bruised and he was knocked out so he will have to go through the normal protocols before he rides again,” chief stipendiary steward John Oatham said. The final event at Avondale was deemed a non-race after Nor Azman parted company with Le Moussier following a bump from Brendan Hutton’s mount Dylan De Lago, which collapsed due to a suspected internal haemorrhage.

Hutton was able to walk away, but Nor Azman remained motionless on the track and the remaining riders were aware of the situation and pulled their mounts up. “I understand both jockeys were discharged from hospital last night with Brendan mainly complaining of a sore neck,” Oatham said.

The Allenton Bowling Club has signed off on the 2016-2017 season with another big result.

After winning some major titles during the season, the powerhouse club of Mid Canterbury bowls added the Canterbury Champion of Champions Wom-

en’s Triples prize to the trophy cabinet up in Christchurch at the weekend when Sandra Keith, Rachel Davies and Valmai Whinham emerged victorious in an all Mid Canterbury final against the Ashburton side of Wendy Suttie, Heather Goddall and Noeline Woods.

To qualify for the final, Keith’s

team had to first beat the strong Bev Morel skipped side from Elmwood in the semi-final on Saturday to earn the right to return on Sunday to shoot for glory.

In a closely fought battle, Keith’s side won the tussle 17-16.

Methven’s Brent Mayson and his side were also in action in the

Men’s Fours knockout but were beaten in their semi-final on Saturday morning while another Allenton bowler, Mat Bassett who also plays out of the Elmwood Club in Christchurch was in the money when the side he was a part of won the Watson Shield in which teams play singles, pairs, triples and fours.

In many ways, this has been a week rowing stalwart Paula Storey has dreaded, but ultimately, she may emerge the stronger for it.

The 1983 New York marathon winner and Olympic bronze medallist competed at the mountain biking event at Woodhill Forest in Auckland on Tuesday. Fellow rider Nick Devcich, 64, was just ahead of 66-year-old Dixon and noticed a man on the track who had come off his bike. “So like you do, you stop and see how he is. “We pulled his bike out of the way, and then Rod Dixon showed up.” Devcich said he was so focused on helping the injured rider that he didn’t notice his idol had stopped to give him a hand.

Roos to make call on Thurston

A little known Romanian has been confirmed as Parker’s opponent in Auckland, replacing Brit Hughie Fury. Duco Events have confirmed today that Razvan Cojanu will challenge Parker for the WBO heavyweight belt.

It’s reported that the May 6 fight will be shifted from Spark Arena, formally Vector Arena, to

the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau. According to 1News, the fight will be downgraded from the 12,000 capacity venue in the Auckland CBD to the 3000 capacity venue.

Cojanu meets the WBO criteria of being in their top 15 list, just, being ranked at 14. The 30-year-old Cojanu has a 16 win, two loss record.

Americans Dominic Breazeale and Deontay Wilder have also put their hands up to

fight Parker, since Fury pulled out of the May 6 bout citing a lower back injury.

Boxing commentator Mike Angove told Radio New Zealand that at just over 2m tall, Cojanu is “a similar height to Fury, I understand he has been in camp with Parker, which is an interesting situation but what it does mean is that he will be fit and ready to fight. He will probably create difficulties knowing Parker, so some of Parker’s

trademark moves he may not pull off as easily.

“Looking at who Cojanu has fought compared to who Parker has fought I’d suggest Parker will be pretty well equipped to tackle him.

“Cojanu hits harder than Fury he has had 300 amateur fights and he has a nasty left hook to the head and body and coming from the height at which he throws it will create some difficulties for Parker.”

Thunder grounded by Houston Rockets Steven Adams’ season is over after the Oklahoma City Thunder were knocked out of the first round of the NBA playoffs.

The Houston Rockets yesterday completed a 4-1 series victory over the Thunder, winning game five 105-99 at home.

Former Oklahoma City guard James Harden led the way for the Rockets with 34 points, while the Thunder once more lived and died with Russell Westbrook.

The MVP favourite paced his side with 47 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, but struggled in the fourth quarter and made only five of his 18 tries from beyond the arc, equalling an NBA record for three-point attempts in a playoff game.

Oklahoma City were again ineffective when their point guard took a seat on the bench, finishing at -16 for the game while Westbrook was resting to continue a tough series for the second unit.

That topic caused much consternation when it was posed to Adams after the Thunder’s defeat in game four earlier in the week, with Westbrook launching a passionate defence of his teammates while the Kiwi remained quiet.

And Adams was again understated yesterday as his fourth season in the NBA came to a close, finishing with seven points and nine

rebounds after making a strong start with four first-half blocks.

An exit in the opening round is a far cry from the heights Adams and the Thunder reached last season, when Oklahoma City came within a game of upsetting the Golden State Warriors and advancing to the NBA Finals.

The New Zealand centre excelled in that post-season and seemed set to take his game to new levels. But after All Star Kevin Durant decided to join forces with the Warriors in the off-season, the Thunder campaign became the Westbrook show and Adams’ impact was limited.

While Westbrook became the second player in NBA history to average a tripledouble across an entire NBA season, Adams finished with 11.3 points and 7.7 rebounds a game.

Those numbers were career-highs but the big man was often reduced to spectator as Westbrook guided his team to a 47-35 record, earning the sixth seed in the Western Conference before running into the Rockets.

That was where it ended for Oklahoma City, leaving Adams to look forward to a long off-season before his four-year, $US100 million ($144m) contract begins in late October.

Johnathan Thurston could still play for the Kangaroos even if is he ruled out of North Queensland’s NRL clash against Parramatta on Friday, according to Australia coach Mal Meninga.

Thurston was yesterday named in a 20-man Kangaroos squad to meet New Zealand on Friday week, despite missing the past two games for the Cowboys with a calf injury.

Will Chambers and Aaron Woods fill in for injured duo Greg Inglis and Matt Scott, while in the only unforced change, Josh Papalii replaces Canberra clubmate Shannon Boyd in the 17.

Thurston is no certainty to play against the Eels this week despite being included in an extended Cowboys squad; while James Maloney is on standby for the Test.

Coincidentally, the Kangaroos medical staff are also on the books at North Queensland. “(Thurston) doesn’t have to play that game on the weekend.

He’s a pretty experienced player,” Meninga said on Wednesday.

“Knowing John, he’ll want to play in the Test match, if fully fit.

“He’ll come in to camp and through our protocols, he’ll go through a medical and we’ll make some decisions around him on the Sunday.

“It’s one of the reasons James Maloney is named as 19th man as well, just in case.”

The Kangaroos will have just two training sessions during the week.

“Not only do these players have established combinations with each other, but they are also well aware of our values,” Meninga said.

Trent Merrin and Michael Morgan, in particular, were under pressure to retain their spots after average starts to the season at club level.

However, Meninga backed the pair to produce against the Kiwis at GIO Stadium.

“Trent’s playing in a team that’s struggling at the moment,” Meninga said.

“I still think he’s trying hard, he’s working hard for the team, his efforts with ball and defence is pretty good, “Their form I don’t think really matters.

“They come back in to an environment where they’re comfortable, happy playing with some terrific players, and that’ll affect them in a positive way.

Captain Cameron Smith will become just the second player to reach 50 Tests for Australia - behind only Darren Lockyer, who made 59 appearances.

Home advantage hopes Mid Canterbury’s premier netball teams will be hoping for a home court advantage this week, as the new Inter-Centre competition continues.

Four of the Ashburton teams will be hosting matches at the EA Networks Centre and will be looking to improve on last week’s results.

Southern will host their second home game, after losing to Lincoln University last week, and will be facing some equally stiff competition in Kereru.

After a big challenge last week, coach Karilyn Witterick was anticipating another tough contest.

“Kereru are a very strong team

and while they won’t be as aerial as Lincoln were last week, they’ll be tough competition,” she said.

The other Mid Canterbury teams will also be expecting fierce opponents.

United will take on Technical, while Methven will play Halswell and Ashburton College play St Nicholas in the fourth home game.

After facing each other last week, both Hampstead and Celtic will travel this week, to take on Saints and Kaiapoi respectively.

It will be their first taste of competition against the Canterbury sides, after Celtic proved the victors in the only local der-

by of the first round.

The inter-centre competition runs for the first six weeks of this year’s competition, before teams return to their local leagues for the second and third rounds.

Mid Canterbury Netball administrator Aimee Cosgrove said not only did the new competition attract top players but it also attracted top officials.

“Last week we had umpires with their New Zealand badges and the top New Zealand umpire coach, as well as some top players like Kate Lloyd sitting in the crowd.

“It’s exciting to be a part of,” she said.

Future British and Irish Lions tours shorter English Premiership rugby has confirmed the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in June and July will be the last in its existing six-week format.

Mark McCafferty, chief executive of the umbrella organisation for the 12 English clubs, has echoed the stance of RFU coun-

terpart Ian Ritchie that the tours must be shortened as part of the new global season that comes into effect in 2020.

Former Lions captain Brian O’Driscoll is among a chorus of voices who have demanded that tours are retained in their current six-week, 10-match guise,

Leitch joins Sunwolves Chiefs loose forward Michael Leitch says he has committed to play for the Sunwolves, possibly as early as next year. Japan captain Leitch, 28, said he has signed to play his Super Rugby for the Japanese franchise in 2019.
