Hundreds of Mid Cantabrians took to the end of their driveways on Saturday morning to commemorate an Anzac Day like no other.

With Covid-19 lockdown forcing the cancellations of all normal Anzac Day events, a call to arms was sent nationwide asking for New Zealanders to stand at the end of their driveways at 6am to show their respect.

And across the district they did, from as far east as the Rangitata Huts and right up to underneath the Southern Alps in Mt Somers and everywhere in between, Mid Canterbury stood proud.

With poppies and Anzac decorations

standing proudly in gardens, on fences and mailboxes and inside windows, this district can stand tall and be proud in their efforts to make sure Anzac Day was not forgotten in amongst the stress and concern around the lockdown.

This sentiment was shared by Ashburton RSA president, Merv Brenton.

“It’s been fantastic, walking around town and seeing all the displays,” he said.

“This district has done a wonderful job and should be proud.

“I went for a longer walk on Saturday and I was really impressed with the amount of poppies out and about.

“If everyone who had a poppy on display came to an Anzac Day service,

Baring Square wouldn’t be big enough.”

Many who stood at their driveways across the district on Saturday morning did so while playing the live broadcast across national radio which featured all the traditional elements of an Anzac Day service.

Later in the morning in Methven, residents again took to the streets as the local volunteer fire brigade made their way around the township using three trucks, working their way up each street in their own sign of respect.

From socks, to facemasks

Many business owners are losing sleep at the moment and New Zealand Sock Company managing director Euan Sparrow is among them.

Just not for the same reasons as everyone else.

From tomorrow, the local factory will not only be making socks for the feet of the world, they will be manufacturing revolutionary facemasks as well.

Recently the company purchased two new machines from the Italian company Loniti, which as it turns out, also had a programme that would enable the Ashburton factory to make facemasks.

“Loniti contacted me and then sent the programme to us this week and our very clever staff installed it. We have been playing around with logo positioning and other bits and pieces since.”

The masks have a double layer to them. The outer layer is merino wool and the inner layer made from a fabric known as Meryl Skinlife.

Sparrow was quick to stress that while the New Zealand Sock Company masks are not

considered medical quality, the Meryl fabric is known for its ability to inhibit the growth of main bacteria groups in textiles.

“We have all been wearing them around here, they are so comfortable your face doesn’t get hot under them at all.

“Which makes them perfect for construction workers, for those worried about air pollution, rest home staff, school teachers, the possibilities are endless.”

In a goodwill gesture, Sparrow said they are poised to provide free masks to people in the community who will benefit from them most.

“We are currently looking into the likes of rest homes and other places we could help out with our comfortable masks.”

Another huge bonus of the masks is that they are machine washable, and do not shrink.

Sparrow said the price point has not been set in stone yet, however preliminary costings would suggest they will come out at an extremely competitive cost.

“We had the yarn on hand already because Kathmandu use it in their socks and now we have the machines set up it can

be full steam ahead on Tuesday.”

The machines do all the work.

Not only do they make the masks but they sew the ear bits on as well. All the staff have to do is to trim off some threads here and there if needed, but that’s it, he said.

Less than 24 hours after setting up, Sparrow said orders have already hit his inbox.

“A large New Zealand company have ordered 5000 units, and my son contacted one of his regulars in America and they are onboard too.

“Never did I think we would be a company making facemasks as well as socks. Covid-19 has forced many business to rethink how they operate.

“The boardroom whiteboard is covered in ideas and the table is awash with papers, it’s all very exciting.

“Like I tell my guys, something good will always come out of something bad.”

New Zealand rail plan by-passes Ashburton

A new planning document on the future of rail in New Zealand is out for public comment, and while it includes very little for the South Island, Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter believes there is huge potential for a modern rail service in Canterbury.

A modern electric train service between Timaru and Christchurch is a must to improve

what is now a heavily trafficked section of State Highway One, she said.

“This would be faster than driving a car. Electrification and the kind of track improvements we’re taking about would allow trains to travel up to 160km/h – and the straight rail lines in this part of the country allow for consistent higher speeds. That means the trip between Ashburton and Christchurch by train would take about 47 minutes, rather than

over an hour and 10 minutes by car,” she said.

In building the electric rail network, jobs would be created in the short term, but the benefits would continue for decades, Genter said.

She believes the project would be delivered in two stages.

In the first, electrifying and improving the track between Timaru and Christchurch would allow for a start-up service using comfortable modern electric trains to start

with a couple of passenger services a day. The second stage would involve installing faster rail lines, by straightening track and creating passing loops to deliver a fast, two hourly service.

She anticipates the service could start within three years, with the high speed package delivered within 10.

Compared to four-laning State Highway One between Christchurch and Ashburton, upgrading the existing rail lines was

far less expensive, Genter said.

“I think a lot of people would prefer to jump on a train if it means they get to Christchurch or Timaru faster, don’t have to sit in traffic and can read a book, get some work done or while they’re travelling.”

Evidence showed that dollar-for-dollar investing in rail delivered twice as many jobs a new motorway, she said.

The electric train service, however, is not part of the rail plan.

Drive-throughs prepare to open

Ashburton’s KFC and McDonald’s drivethrough staff and management are preparing for queues of cars as they open for the first time in almost five weeks tomorrow.

It will be a whole new world than before lockdown, and even involve temperature-monitoring for KFC staff.

KFC Ashburton franchise manager Brad Haskett said the drive-through was preparing to be very busy, but it was hard to judge just how busy.

“We have never closed our doors for four weeks before, so it’s going to be very different,” Haskett said.

Comments from Mid Cantabrians were the same as from around the country, that they were desperate to come back. One loyal customer said they would be there at 9am to wait for the drive-through to open, which will be at 10am.

There was room for up to 14 cars before the queue went out onto the road. Sometimes on Friday and Saturday nights the queue could go two to three cars out onto the road, but this had never been an issue as it moved quickly.

He expected the reduced menu and payments via eftpos, with no cash transactions, to make service faster.

However, in the event of any queue becoming an issue, he would have to talk to the local council to see what its recommen-

dations were.

As part of new pandemic health and safety rules for staff, they would have their temperatures taken with a forehead thermometer at the start of their shift and then every four hours.

as in Australia during the pandemic, and the restaurant had placed an order for the thermometers.

“They have been working through the lockdown and they have gold standard practices, that’s what KFC New Zealand is trying to achieve as well, a gold standard,” Haskett said.

He was working through the finer points of how contactless trade would work, but could involve putting the meal on a tray outside for people to pick up, or a staff member holding a tray for the customer to take the meal from.

Meanwhile, Dave Whalley at McDonald’s Ashburton said going by comments on social media, he was also expecting a queue of cars when the drive-through opened at 5am tomorrow.

“Good on them, it’s the love of the brand,” Whalley said.

There was room in the Harvey Norman carpark for at least 20 cars to queue in normal times. The area would be of course be relatively empty so there would be more room to curve the queue throughout the carpark.

He said the drive-through windows were being adjusted to ensure contactless trade, meaning there would only be room for the food parcel to fit through, not the server’s hands.

Whalley also owns the Rolleston and Timaru McDonald’s restaurants, and said the 250 to 300 staff at the three sites were excited and looking forward to getting back to work, despite the new regulations around social distancing.

“We are a big family. It might sound cheesy, but it’s blown me away, everyone is just so keen and happy to see each other again.”

There were nine new cases of coronavirus in New Zealand yesterday.

That is made up of four new confirmed cases and five new probable cases, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

There were no new deaths yesterday, meaning the number of New Zealanders who have died from the virus remains at 18. Of the new cases reported yesterday, four were linked to existing clusters, and five were linked to known confirmed cases.

For the past seven days in a row, the

number of new Covid-19 cases has been in single figures. However, the number of Covid-19 related deaths has also slowly been increasing.

The additional nine cases yesterday means the total number of new and confirmed Covid-19 cases in New Zealand is 1470. Some 1142 people have recovered, an increase on 24 compared to Saturday.

This means 78 per cent of all confirmed and probable cases are now recovered.

Seven people remain in hospital, unchanged from Saturday. This total includes one person in the ICU in Middlemore.

Recovery park opening gates

Ashburton’s Resource Recovery Park could be the busiest place in town from Tuesday when its gates open as property owners off-load their four-week lockdown garden spruce-up rubbish.

The park will open its gates at 8am on Tuesday, and Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann says that reopening is likely to see long queues because only three vehicles will be allowed into the area at a time.

“We will be introducing sensible measures to ensure the rubbish and recycling services continue to operate within the Government’s requirements.

Things are not business-as-usual yet, but the council remains committed to delivering these essential services,” he said.

He’s urging people using the park to be patient and if they can avoid going to the park in the first two or three days to do so.

Only gate two will be open during level three and visitors will need to sign an onsite register for contact tracing purposes.

Access to all areas will be controlled through the weighbridge.

A temporary drop-off zone

Ashburton District Council solid waste manager Craig Goodwin at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park. for recyclables has been created and another for council pre-paid bags will be set up just past the weighbridge.

Green waste will be accepted at the park, McCann said, but only one vehicle at a time will be permitted over the weighbridge and into the greenwaste area.

There will be no reusable household items accepted, the reuse shop will be shut and hazardous waste will not be accepted either during Level 3, McCann said.

The park will be operating under a cashless system, eftpos cards only will be accepted.

From Tuesday kerbside collections will return to normal with green glass crates collected.

Rubbish can no longer be placed in the yellow recycling bins, but until the council is confident residents are not contaminating their yellow bin recycling with rubbish, contents of those bins would continue to go to landfill, he said.

“We’ll let people know when

recycling habits have improved and the items can be taken to the recycling sorting centre again.”

The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park will open 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. The park will be closed each day from 12.30pm-1pm for staff to manage a safe lunch break.

At the Rakaia Resource recovery park visitors will need to register on site and normal recycling lanes and the greenwaste yard will operate as normal. Physical distancing will be managed.

Bagged rubbish can be taken across the weighbridge to be dropped off but there will be no facilities operating for the dropoff of re-usable household items such as furniture, whiteware, electrical goods, batteries, electronics or other appliances or hazardous waste.

Like the Ashburton park, no cash will be accepted. Rakaia’s opening hours will be Monday 10am-noon, Wednesday, 3.30pm-5.30pm, Friday 2pm4pm and Saturday 9am-3pm.

Methven Green’s green waste yard on Vaughans Road will operate as normal and it will be back to business as usual at rural recycling drop-off sites.

Operating your business at Alert Level 3 Stopping the spread of COVID-19 requires all businesses to trade in a contactless way, put strong hygiene measures in place, and record contact details.

If we don’t take the right measures when we return to work, we risk spreading the disease and causing a spike in new cases – like we have seen in other countries. That could undo all of the gains we have made during lockdown. Remember, people should work from home if they can.

Working in a contactless way At Alert Level 3, all businesses need to ensure there is no contact with customers.

Unfortunately, that means if your business involves physical contact with your customers then it cannot open during Alert Level 3.

Ordering and payment should be contactless – online or over the phone. Cash should only be accepted where the customer has no alternative, and should be handled safely.

Customers can’t come onto your premises (unless you are a supermarket, dairy, petrol station, pharmacy or permitted health service).

Most goods should be delivered in a contactless way to the customer’s doorstep.

Where deliveries can’t happen, customers can receive goods in a contactless pick-up area or drive through.

You cannot open your premises to the public. That means customers will not be able to browse in-store, or discuss issues face-to-face with staff.

Putting in place good hygiene measures The hygiene measures we need to put in place for businesses to operate at Alert Level 3 should all be familiar:

1. Wash and dry hands frequently – soap and water is preferable to hand sanitiser. Remember to always cough or sneeze into your elbow.

2. Stay home if you are sick – this applies to everyone. People with the slightest sniffle or cough should contact their doctor or Healthline and be tested for COVID-19 as soon as possible.

3. Clean surfaces – regularly and with a disinfectant.

4. Maintain appropriate physical distancing – we have been used to maintaining a 2-metre distance from people outside our bubble. This continues to be a safe distance for workplaces. However, workplaces are controlled environments so we can manage risk differently. If the above measures are rigorously applied – and if other measures like the use of screens, and the careful recording of who works together are in place – then this distance can be reduced to 1 metre.

Recording contacts (contact tracing) At Alert Level 3, it’s important we have strong contact tracing ability. Businesses need to help by keeping a constantly updated record of people who enter their premises.

They must record entry and exit times for workers, and visitors like contractors.

This needs to include names, times, phone numbers and email addresses.

For example:

• A packhouse needs to record when staff arrive and leave, any maintenance staff that visit the site, plus their contact details.

• A tradie needs to record the date and time they arrive and leave a customer’s home and their customer’s contact details.

All businesses must be sure to make, and keep their contact records, in a safe way.

Some services, like supermarkets, dairies, pharmacies and petrol stations, don’t need to collect customer details as they have other ways of contact tracing. However, they still need to keep track of any movement of their staff.

Employers and employees should work together to understand how these measures can be implemented well.

Being ‘confined to barracks’, this has been a sad day. My father was away at war in 1915-19, and I have a few pieces of memorabilia.

These include his three war medals.

The first one is the Military Medal, issued for Bravery in the Field, of which I am very proud.

The second is the NZ medal issued to all who fought overseas.

The third is, I think, a commemoration of World War One. It is the inscription on this medal that made me feel so sad.

It states THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION. What a waste then, and it has been the same ever since. Surely we should have learned that fighting wars like this will achieve nothing but sad loss of life.

I wonder if humanity will ever learn ?

The art gallery and museum building had major design faults at the very beginning of the project.

I know this because I was on the building project committee representing the Ashburton Art Gallery along with the Ashburton Art Gallery curator and sector experts from around New Zealand, who battled the designer and the council property manager for many years to get a purpose built building that Ashburton could be proud of. We lost.

You are correct that the round window you mention and indeed the top floor windows are covered over, however, it was requested in the initial planning stages by the art gallery (and their sector experts) for them to removed. If my memory serves me correctly, we were told at the time by the council property manager that the aesthetic of the building would be compromised. What rubbish!

The reasons to remove the windows given by art sector experts, who you would think would know what was required for a gallery fit for purpose, were that the round window is situated in a work room where art works are unpacked and conditioned to air temperature before going into a gallery, and the top floor windows

are situated in a major gallery space. Windows allow light and UV rays to penetrate which can damage fragile art works, therefore not required in a gallery. All those windows should NEVER have been included in the design.

If the designer of the building and the council property manager had at the time listened to the art gallery’s recommendations re the windows and other design faults and amended the plan and specifications, I have no doubt the building would have been built for purpose and would not have the issues it has today.

The local construction company you refer to built the building to design and specification, it is therefore, NOT their fault that the building is flawed.

This local building contractor has built many buildings over the years, such as the Warehouse and Harvey Norman buildings, and more recently the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Under construction at the present time is the Murney Building on East Street and a number of

builds on Tancred Street. They even built the Ashburton College 50-plus years ago. They have a history as a quality builder.

It’s worth noting the art gallery and museum was built to the specifications provided. There were design faults. The windows for example were requested to be deleted as an art gallery cannot have natural light. This was refused, hence the windows have been covered over. During the build there were a large number of variations that the council property manager also demanded.

I would suggest blame lies elsewhere. It would be interesting for council to divulge the full costs it has incurred on reports and legal fees associated with this project.

So before Mr Keane accuses a local builder of what could be termed malpractice, he should do some fact checking first.

New level, but the same requirements

I

t’s been a long four and a bit weeks, but today we take the next step toward returning New Zealand, and most importantly for us, the Ashburton District back to normality.

At the start of March, if you’d said this country was about to step into an unknown like no other before, you would have been laughed at. But as the month ticked by, the reality of what we were facing became more and more real by the day.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confined us to our homes, our bubbles and into a form of solidarity that none of us could have ever predicted what it might be like at the time.

Now though, a bubble is a safe place. Sure, it might get a little testy from time to time, but it’s a safety net from a pandemic which has crippled the world – but not so much New Zealand because of the steps taken.

Financially it’s hurt us. And it will continue to hurt us for many months and perhaps even years to come, but the price of human life is far greater, in the bigger scheme of things.

It’s important to remember today though, that while the shackles have been loosened with the arrival of Alert Level 3, that actually not a lot has changed in our day-to-day lives.

A few more people are allowed to go back to work, but so much of normal life remains locked down.

Since last week’s press conference when it was announced that Level 3 was pending, everything has seemed busier.

The streets have more cars on them and a general hustle and bustle has returned.

I worry that everyone will take today as being free, when it fact, we’re still a long way from it.

So keep it simple in Level 3, use your smarts and play your bit in ensuring we don’t slide back down the levels again.

No one wants that.

Thought for the day: Wake up, stay home, sleep well and repeat.

Transitioning to Alert Level 3 H

opefully ,as we spend this Anzac Day holiday in the company of our immediate bubbles or engaging in essential work, this will be the last day we spend at Covid-19 Alert Level 4.

I know many people will have missed having the opportunity to attend their usual Anzac Day services this year to honour all our returned servicemen and women and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our safety and security.

I personally found it strange not to be attending services around the region and laying wreaths as I normally do.

However for the many who took up the RSA’s suggestion of ‘Standing at Dawn’ and observed one minute’s silence at 6am or made some time to reflect on the wartime contribution of their own family members, I am sure the day was just as, and perhaps even more, significant this year.

Tomorrow, as we shift to Alert Level 3, many businesses in sectors such as construction will be

able to resume operation, albeit with new ways of working to ensure physical distancing is maintained, surfaces and tools are disinfected regularly and records are kept of people’s movements to facilitate contact tracing.

Retail businesses and cafes and restaurants will only be able to open if they can take orders online or over the phone and can deliver these in a contactless way.

Businesses which provide services involving close personal contact such as hairdressing, personal training and beauty therapy will not be able to re-open during Alert Level 3 other than to sell products remotely.

The message from the Government is that people that can work

from home should continue to do so and that students should continue to learn from home wherever possible.

Schools will re-open from Wednesday to supervise those children up to Year 10 level who are not able to remain at home because parents need to go back to work.

This poses challenges for schools as they will need to continue delivering their online learning programme while having some staff on site to supervise those children whose parents need to send them.

For many people, Alert Level 3 will be much the same as Alert Level 4.

If you are not at work, school, exercising or getting essentials, then the advice is to remain at home.

The Government has indicated that, if you need to, you can expand your bubble a small amount to bring in close family, isolated people or caregivers.

Kiwi drivers running hot Nick Cassidy has continued the good run of results for New Zealand drivers in global simulation racing.

With motorsport on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, a number of categories have launched virtual esports championships, with the latest being Formula E’s Race From Home Challenge.

Cassidy, the reigning Super Formula champion in Japan, has finished second in the opening race in Hong Kong.

The Aucklander is not a fulltime driver in the all-electric race series, but has joined Envision Virgin Racing for the opening virtual events after being one of the team’s official rookie drivers at in-season testing earlier this year.

Cassidy impressed the team with his pace, clocking a new lap record at Marrakesh to finish fastest.

Fellow countrymen Brendon Hartley and Mitch Evans have not fared so well

in Formula E’s opening simulation race, finishing back in 16th and 17th respectively.

New Zealand drivers have generally been shining during the lockdown however, particularly in the Supercars E Series.

Scott McLaughlin leads the 10-round virtual championship, having won three of the first 10 races, four of which have been won by fellow Kiwis.

Shane van Gisbergen also claimed three victories in the series, while Fabian Coulthard has collected one.

Van Gisbergen, Coulthard and the other New Zealander in the category, Andre Heimgartner, are all in the top six of the championship.

McLaughlin has also impressed in Indy Car’s iRacing Challenge.

He won one of the five rounds, while recording a second and two fourths in three of the other four.

Massive payout, job offers rolling in Days after he stepped down as the NRL’s chief executive, Todd Greenberg is already receiving several job offers.

Greenberg announced he had “mutually agreed” to part ways with the NRL last week after weeks of speculation and frustration.

Amid the coronavirus lockdown, he was copping backlash for the NRL’s reckless spending and poor financial management.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Greenberg’s payout equated to more than $650,000, although that sum has not been confirmed by the NRL. He reportedly received such a payout because he still had sixand-a-half months remaining on his contract.

On Thursday, Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle stepped down, while Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts is also facing some criticism, even from within his own organisation.

As chief executives across the country start dropping like flies, Greenberg revealed he has already been presented with offers for new employment. He also disclosed he was willing to take on a role not in sports administration.

“I’ve had a couple of calls this week actually,” he said.

“The best advice I got was don’t say yes to anything and don’t say no to anything in the first month or so … Just take your time, reset, have a good break, and then you can decide what you want to do next.

“I’ve got some unbelievable experiences out of the game, and I’ve met some unbelievably great people, and I’ve learnt a lot too.

“I don’t think I’ve always got it right. I don’t think every decision that you look back through the prism of hindsight tells you you got it right, but you learn a lot, and I’ve still got a long way to go to continue to learn.

“Both my kids are in uni now,

“I spent a fair chunk of my career in sports administration, and the key in sport is about stakeholders and trying to engage with various types of people.

On Tuesday, Roberts announced CA had already suffered a $20 million loss due to the coronavirus epidemic, and admitted that figure would climb into the “hundreds of millions” should India not tour next summer.

CA also stood down most of its staff on an 80 per cent pay reduction. CA’s staff were left fuming after the announcement, particularly considering Roberts reportedly said lay-offs would not be required last month.

“People felt totally blindsided.

We hear all this stuff from the bosses about CA putting people first. It’s all rubbish,” a staff member said. “And what is all this stuff about ‘We are all in it together’, when we take an 80 per cent pay cut and the executive take a 20 per cent cut?”

Castle faced anonymous death threats Deposed Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle was subjected to a death threat and bullying, according to the latest report on the rugby fiasco across the Tasman.

Acting Rugby Australia chairman Paul McLean has described some of the public criticism she faced over the Israel Folau affair as bullying in a Sun-Herald report.

It also claimed security measures were beefed up after Castle received a social media death threat from a supporter of Folau, the star Wallaby who incited a long controversy with two anti-gay posts which led to his bitter break up with the game.

The alleged death threat came around the time of Folau’s threeday code of conduct hearing last May. The Sun-Herald says security was increased at RA’s headquarters at Moore Park, where staff were told not to prop lower level doors open.

Castle’s Sydney home was given a security review.

“She was subjected to vitriol on social media as well as public criticism for a number of different reasons on a scale that few Australian sporting administrators have had to endure,” the Sun-Herald reported.

New Zealander Castle quit last week, after two-and-a-half years in charge, after it turned out she did not have her board’s total support.

McLean said: “I’m not a social media person, but I’m aware of some of the things that were said over a period of time in a quite vicious and vitriolic way.

“It’s the silent forces, the dark forces, they’re the things that upset me most.

“It’s the people who didn’t know the facts or were just one of those faceless people out there – that was the damaging thing form her perspective.

“She shared some of that with me, which I found quite abhorrent.

“One of my greatest concerns with her was her welfare and how she was on a daily basis. A lesser person would have thrown the towel in ages ago, quite simply.”

Who’s in the money?

While the salaries of athletes from top-tier sporting leagues such as the NBA, NFL and Premier League are well-known, it can be comparatively difficult to know how much the best rugby players rake in.

And, with the Covid-19 outbreak, some of the game’s biggest names, such as Dan Carter, are set to see their big-money contracts expire without taking to the field again.

Here’s a list of the 15 best-paid rugby players – before current and impending pay cuts are taken into account – with all figures convered into $NZD. 15. Faf de Klerk (South Africa/ Sale Sharks) – $1.02m A key member of South Africa’s World Cup-winning Springboks squad last year, halfback Faf de Klerk signed a contract extension with Premiership club Sale Sharks in 2018 that sees him earn half-amillion pounds per year.

Young star biding his time

By Adam Burns For Michael Hennings it has been a unusual arrival into Mid Canterbury.

Six weeks ago, the talented rugby star arrived in the region from his native Fiji and was set to star for the Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV. Less than a fortnight had passed and Covid-19 lockdown restrictions came into effect, meaning his rugby dreams had to be put on ice.

It was decided he would remain in Mid Canterbury, where he is living at assistant coach James Roderick’s family home in Methven.

The 18-year-old has just started online learning at Mount Hutt College, in between video chats every few days with his family back in Fiji.

“It’s been challenging, but I just try and keep myself occupied with training and school,” he said.

“In Suva with a whole lot of families, it’s quite noisy compared to Methven which is nice and quiet.

“The weather’s just a bit colder.”

The move was a big decision for Hennings, given he had been made head boy at Suva’s Marist Brothers High School.

“Yeah it was a tough one,” he said.

“I’d been at the school for five years and I wanted to finish off on a high note but life goes on so I thought I’d take the opportunities as they come.”

Hennings, who was part of the Fijian Rugby Academy, was earmarked as a dynamic loose forward of high potential by Mid Canterbury Combined coaching staff.

“We probably needed a bit of size, bulk and age in that forward pack,” head coach Shane Enright said.

“We’ve got a pretty young and inexperienced team, so we looked for that player who brought that skill and Fijian flair and was hopefully going to be a player who the young fellas would play and lift their standard alongside.”

Hennings has skippered several of his schoolboy teams to titles since he was in under-14 level and was a standout performer at the World School Sevens tournament in Auckland at the end of last year.

“At school rugby was always in the back of my mind,” he said.

“I didn’t do any other sports in school, it was just rugby.”

Hennings has also observed the career trajectory of fellow Marist old boys such as Crusaders wing Manasa Mataele.

He recalls being inspired to follow a similar path when he watched Mataele during the Crusaders’ Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs in Suva last year.

In the interim, he was counting down the days when he can finally get on the park in Mid Canterbury.

“I just want to do my best and take every opportunity with rugby and school.

“Playing professional rugby is a goal but it’s about balancing it with school work so I have a back-up plan.”
