Growers in the dark about dealing with a new potato virus found at Mid Canterbury farms hope experts can help them prevent it from spreading further.

The potato mop-top virus (PMTV) has been found in potato tubers on two properties so

far and a Biosecurity New Zealand team is working in a joint response with industry group Potatoes New Zealand to identify how widely it is entrenched.

The virus discovery was only confirmed for the first time in New Zealand last week at the undisclosed farms. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has re-

vealed the properties are in Mid Canterbury.

Biosecurity officials updated growers about the initial response and provided advice about preventing its spread in a meeting organised by Potatoes New Zealand in Ashburton on Tuesday.

Redmond, said potato growers had a lot to learn about the disease as it was the first time it had arrived in New Zealand.

“No-one knows a lot about the disease and we will go through the process of finding out where it comes from and how we can help solve it.’’

Redmond said growers expected

they would rely on past overseas efforts to control the virus.

Growers had experience dealing with the tomato potato psyllid and would be feeling their way with the new virus discovery, he said.

Potato virus confirmed From P1 Biosecurity New Zealand is investigating how the virus entered the country. Germplasm such as seed can be imported, but is tested for the virus before its release and it’s understood a small amount of tubers are also brought into the country.

Infected potatoes can display symptoms including distortions to the skin, deep cracking, and rustcoloured arcs, streaks or flecks in the tuber flesh.

Incident controller David Yard said the biosecurity team was taking wider samples from growers, seed lines and processors to find out how far the virus had spread.

He said the team was looking at pathways that could have resulted in the entry of the virus, but did not yet know how it had arrived.

“We don’t want growers to be in the dark. We are open and transparent and we are working with Potatoes New Zealand.’’

He said it was important to stress that PMTV was not a food safety issue.

“Potato mop-top virus is a crop disease which, if found to be wide-

spread, could cause some productivity issues for growers. It is a notifiable and unwanted organism in New Zealand under the Biosecurity Act.” The transfer of soil was a common theme for spreading viruses and growers could step up their farm biosecurity by cleaning farm machinery, he said.

The virus is common overseas

in countries including in North and South America, parts of Europe and Asia, but is not found in Australia.

Potatoes New Zealand chief executive Chris Claridge said the virus-affected potatoes were from the Innovator variety, which was only used for potato chips.

“We will then consider if it is possible to eradicate it, or whether

we will need to work with growers to manage its impact over the long term.”

The Innovator potato variety was last imported as germplasm into New Zealand in July, 2011.

The focus of tests will be on other farms with the variety, but this will be extended to other varieties, including potatoes for hash browns and other products. Fact sheets

and guidance are being drawn up for growers.

MPI is advising New Zealand trading partners of the discovery.

So far chemical treatments have yet to be found for the virus and overseas efforts appear to be concentrating on breeding virus resistant potatoes and using fungicides, crop rotations and planting certified seed potatoes.

Battery thefts continue to plague truckies

Ashburton truckies are continuing to be plagued – and perplexed – by battery thefts around town.

At least two more batteries have been taken from trucks in the past week, as well as a number of items from inside cars.

Police first issued warnings after five battery thefts last week, asking

residents to report any suspicious behaviour observed around vehicles.

The spree follows a similar spate of thefts in 2016, which saw dozens of truck and loader batteries taken from contractors around Ashburton.

In 2014, Whangarei recorded a series of raids on stores retailing truck batteries, which was at the

time linked to the production of methamphetamine (P).

A Whangarei salesman told NZME that the acid in the batteries is an ingredient used in the Pmaking process.

However, Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said Ashburton police are not treating the thefts as a “precursor” to anything bigger or drugrelated.

Recent data from the National Drug Intelligence Bureau suggests the majority of the meth used in New Zealand is made overseas.

Truck batteries, which can cost up to $350 new and weigh around 13kg, can also be sold for scrap metal, or as is. “At the moment we are looking at the batteries as a valuable commodity,” Dean said.

thefts had coincided with a rise in thefts from cars over the past week.

“Somebody’s out there in the dead of night and they aren’t afraid to keep doing these offences.

He said the thefts were not limited to one area of Ashburton, and urged people to take measures to secure their car and remove or obscure anything which could tempt a potential thief.

MP slams road safety proposals By katie todd

The future of State Highway 1 could include a median barrier from Rolleston to Ashburton, an 80km/h speed limit on the Rakaia River Bridge and a complete ban on farm equipment.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) have been holding closed-door consultation meetings about how to improve the stretch of road, but their ideas are already meeting loud opposition.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon has spoken to three individuals at the meetings and is calling out the proposals for “prioritising savings over safety”.

Of particular concern, he said, NZTA has confirmed the Government’s intention to install a median barrier between Ashburton and Rolleston, but with no plans to widen the road to four lanes.

“That’s a huge mistake,” he said.

“Roads where median barriers have been built in recent years include the Waikato Expressway and Tauranga Eastern Link, but both have four lanes.

Importantly, they’re also highly engineered highways designed to be built with median barriers. As a result neither one has had a single fatality.”

Overlaying a median barrier along an existing two-lane road is incredibly short-sighted and potentially dangerous, he said.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers chairman Mike Salvesen said he did not imagine a ban on farm equipment would go down well with farmers.

“It would cause a major disruption for some individuals in particular,” he said.

Salvesen said he was aware that reducing the number of major accidents was an “absolute major focus” of the Government, but queried whether farm equipment had been the cause of any major incidents in recent years.

“We are a rural economy, a rural area. State Highway 1 just happens to pass through,” he said.

Falloon said other proposals considered in the meetings included lowering the speed limit from Rolleston to Ashburton and closing side roads to right-turning traffic.

With the road becoming more busy and dangerous, he said Twyford should reactivate the previous National Government’s plan to build a four-lane highway with purpose-built median

barriers.

But Labour List MP based in Hinds, Jo Luxton, disagreed.

“For the last three years under National, the majority of roading investment went into building big city highways that the people of Mid Canterbury will never drive on and ghost regional plans that rarely got close to reality,” she said.

“While Mr Falloon scaremongers from the other side of the door, he forgets that this strong, progressive Government isn’t handicapped by ‘one or the other’ scenarios for regional NZ.” Luxton said the decision on what money is spent on had been given to “those at the coal face of transport in our district” – the NZTA in partnership with councils.

“I look forward to hearing the outcome of the current meetings and how they will take our region’s roads forward.”

Second division bull ride canned

Methven Rodeo has canned its second division bull ride as a precaution against spreading the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis.

Bulls for the second division ride are traditionally sourced from Mid Canterbury farms and shared the yards with bulls that travel the country on the professional rodeo circuit.

Methven Rodeo spokesperson Kasey Morris said organisers had decided against holding the second division ride this year as a precaution. “We can’t risk bringing through bulls from local farms.”

Mid Canterbury farmers are battling to contain and eradicate Mycoplasma bovis with properties under movement restriction or notice of direction.

Calves used in other rodeo roping events will also be held separately and access the rodeo arena through a different entry.

Morris said the rodeo would begin at 10am with main events from noon, as in previous years.

The event has adopted The Key to Life Charitable Trust as its charity for the next two years and hopes to donate $15,000 in that time. The trust is committed to reducing the rate of suicide in New Zealand.

Morris said the rodeo community had lost one of their own within the past year and the trust’s goals were heart-felt. The stresses caused by Mycoplasma bovis in the community were also real.

Around 300 professional and amateur bull riders, cowboys and girls are expected at the Methven Rodeo on October 21 and it will follow the Winchester Rodeo the day before.

Former Methven Rodeo member and national calf roping champion Patrick McCarthy is returning from his new southern base to compete, as is national barrel racing champion Jenny Atkinson. She will be riding a horse fittingly named Methven.

Morris said organisers also hoped to showcase 12 new broncos bought from the late Colin Booth. The club’s broncos are currently wintering over on high country stations and will be transported to the rodeo yards early October.

A three-legged race for students from schools in the Methven area is also expected to generate plenty of rivalry, with Mt Somers Springburn School defending the title it won last year.

The rodeo will also feature refreshments and food.

Those buying alcohol need to prove they are 18 years of age or older.

This year’s rodeo will be the 49th.

Bid to stop ‘tahrmageddon’

Local hunters are ramping up efforts to stop a massed tahr cull across the South Island in two weeks’ time.

In a bid to prevent what has been dubbed Tahrmageddon, Ashburton hunters and residents have been firing off urgent letters to Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage, and generously supporting crowdfunding efforts by the New Zealand Tahr Foundation.

Sage ordered an urgent cull of 17,500 of the introduced goat-like animals across the South Island last week, claiming that populations have proliferated to destructive numbers.

The animals could pose a threat to tussock grasslands and native species if unmanaged, and Forest & Bird estimate the current population is up to 50,000 – five times the maximum population allowed by the Tahr Control Plan.

Local hunter Tim Silva is among those pleading with Sage to rethink the decision to “decimate the herd” on the grounds that tahr are not a pest, but an asset – both economically and as part of the livelihoods of many local hunters.

Writing to Sage as an “outdoorsman, hunter, conservationist, father and professional” based in the heart of tahr country, Silva said hunters could be a part of the solution.

He urged Sage to work with the Game Animal Council to come up with a solution that will not destroy the trophy herd, while still achieving manageable numbers.

He said it was an opportunity for her to mobilise hunters as conservation champions.

Members have established a Givealittle page to cover their legal costs, and already raised more than $115,000 from donors across the country.

Any surplus funds will go towards NZ tahr obtaining herd of special interest status.

Forest & Bird are maintaining

support for the cull, which they say will help protect New Zealand’s sensitive native alpine ecosystems.

Forest & Bird claim that the skyrocketing tahr numbers has clearly shown that hunting organisations are not able to adequately control the goat species’ population.

I always open the paper with tremendous pride and see a minor miracle, a brand new product every 24 hours.

What’s your back story, where do you hail from, your working career?

As I said, I’ve lived in Ashburton most of my life. The opportunity to work in the family business in 1974 was not seen as an attractive career move, at all. Well, at least not as a 17-year-old. It was just a job, one that would provide petrol for my car and a few liquid refreshments at the weekend.

To be fair, there’s been many. The Guardian’s achieved many milestones, including celebrating 100 years as a daily newspaper in 1980 (next year we celebrate 140 years since the Guardian was first published).

More recently, becoming a morning paper and a tabloid format.

Oh, and I must mention our website and new apps: Ashburton, Selwyn and soon-to-be Timaru.

Best piece of advice ever given to you?

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know and what they know. Surround yourself with great people.

Have there been any embarrassing moments in your working career?

Oh dear, I was hoping to skip this one! … As a young fella my dad trusted me and a photographer to take a company vehicle, as relief drivers delivered papers up country each afternoon.

I wasn’t driving, it was the photographer, honest.

Each day when heading up shingle roads near Greenstreet we’d snake and drift the van up the road for as long as we could. All fun, no responsibility.

Away from work, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Travel, I know that sounds a bit naf, but I do love travelling.

Oh, and seeing more concerts of old rockers from the 70s, particularly my favourite, Elton John, who I’m going to see again soon.

If you weren’t in your current role, what do you think you’d like to be doing?

I’d spend more time at the family bach and on the beach with my 2 year old grandson, Archie.

TimeBank celebrates first year

Mid Canterbury TimeBank has climbed to over 120 members as it prepares to celebrate its first year.

Through jobs ranging from baking and gardening to children’s entertainment and sewing, TimeBank aims to connect people by bringing them together to exchange skills, labour and knowledge.

Co-ordinator Kate White said the first year had been a great success with 123 members now on board, and more in the process of joining.

“It’s been amazing, I have been impressed with the amazing people that have somehow heard about it and come along and joined,” White said yesterday.

During her working day, stylist and image consultant Jess Mundy deals with the best of the clothing world, but she wanted to do something for women who may not have access to even the most basic of clothing.

At home Mundy had a drawer full of unwanted bras and in talking to friends discovered they too had under garments they had never worn.

“I started thinking. What do you do with them. You can’t exactly sell them on Trade Me, but I knew there must be some charity that would love to have them,” she said.

Mundy talked to more friends and the idea of starting a collection service for unwanted bras was born.

The recipient of that drive will be women’s refuges and women’s shelters.

Through her network in the hair and fashion industry, Mundy set up collection points in Ashburton, Rolleston, Christchurch, Geraldine and Dunedin. And the response from the community has been huge.

Tinwald’s Tanglez Hair Studio is the Ashburton depot and there’s been a steady flow of bra gifters calling in.

Across all depots, Mundy said the numbers were high, with some people bringing in supermarket bags full of bras, some that had never been worn.

Rain cuts Hinds nitrate levels Nitrate concentrations have reduced in some Hinds Plains waterways due to wetter weather, the Hinds Community Monitoring project has shown.

Environment Canterbury principal water quality scientist Adrian Meredith said increased rainfall and higher groundwater levels have both contributed.

“Rainfall washing nitrogen through the soil more regularly, along with higher groundwater levels increasing drain flows, is diluting Nitrate-N concentrations.

“In addition, nitrogen doesn’t build up in soils as it does in drier years when irregular rainfall results in peaks of Nitrate-N being washed through soils.

“Concentrations are still higher than the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management standards, but this project shows the influence that weather can have on water quality results. In some areas, such as Taylors Drain, higher groundwater levels are having the opposite effect on drains which are usually dominated by low NitrateN water derived from the Hinds River.”

now more influenced by regional groundwater resulting in NitrateN levels rising. The ongoing monitoring, a recommendation of the Hinds Drain Working Party, helps build an understanding the longterm trends and effectiveness of actions that are being implemented by the community on the Hinds Plains.

Craig Fleming, chair of the Hinds Drains Working Party, said it will also provide data to inform future planning processes. “Having a community monitoring programme where there is joint ownership of the data is key to the success of the project and it will allow us all to look forward and focus on solutions that will make positive changes.”

The project monitors water quality at 13 sites in the lower Hinds Plains in conjunction with the Hinds Drain Working Party and partners FAR, DairyNZ, Beef & Lamb, the Department of Conservation, Fish & Game, the Ashburton Zone Committee and ECan. In addition to the water quality monitoring, ecological studies are also being carried out at sites on Windermere, Taylors and Boundary Drains and the Hinds River.

Mammoth litter clean-up effort If you thought Ashburton’s streets were looking a little more spick and span last week, you wouldn’t be wrong.

Nineteen locals – including families, council members and other local organisations – undertook a mammoth clean-up effort during an inaugural litter-

free event on September 15.

The event was organised by litter-free advocate Bev Skates and supported by Envirowaste and Eco-Educate.

The army of volunteers filled 23 sacks of rubbish and four bags of recycling from across Ashburton.

Eco Educate Rethink Educator Lesley Ottey said the majority of the rubbish was found on State Highway 1 north of Ashburton, while the majority of the recycling was found in Tinwald.

The group are hoping to make the clean-up an annual event.

Proctor apologises for taking bongs University of Otago proctor Dave Scott acknowledged this afternoon he was wrong to enter a flat while no-one was home and confiscate bongs.

In a press conference yesterday, Scott said with the “benefit of hindsight” he was wrong to enter the flat and he would not make the same mistake again.

“I’m a human and I have made an error of judgement on this occasion [and] I’ve apologised to the flat in question this afternoon for what I did.

“I have made a mistake here and I am willing to learn from it.”

He said he had the best interests of students at heart and was trying to deal with the situation without involving police.

Asked if he broke the law, he said he was not above scrutiny and acknowledged he was wrong.

Scott, a former police officer, entered student flats in Dunedin and took bongs in what Otago

University of Otago proctor Dave Scott University Students’ Association (OUSA) labelled “outrageous” behaviour.

A bong is a water pipe that is commonly used to smoke cannabis or tobacco by filtering burning plant material through water before being inhaled.

The University of Otago is standing behind Scott, despite acknowledging neither he nor the university can claim a right to search private premises.

One of the students who had their bongs confiscated spoke to the Herald anonymously.

The proctor had come around to tell the tenants to clear up a mess outside of their flat and saw the front and back doors were open, the tenant said.

“He closed the one in the front, then walked around back to close the other one. Then he saw the bongs on the table through the glass sliding door.

“He had a meeting with one of our flatmates because we were in trouble for something else, and he banged the bongs down on his desk and asked, ‘what is this’?”

He took the bongs but told them he wouldn’t take it any further.

“No one was home – he just waltzed in and took them. It’s pretty out of line. Pretty unacceptable. Like imagine if your work boss did that. Some members of the flat aren’t even students at the university.”

Members of the flat were more upset about the proctors abuse of power rather than losing the bongs.

“We know what we used them for wasn’t right, but two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Sanitarium wins Weetabix court case New Zealand food company Sanitarium has won a trademark dispute against a Christchurch food importer selling a product with a similar sounding name to WeetBix. The decision, released by the Christchurch High Court yesterday, restricts the sale of British product Weetabix.

Christchurch store A Little Bit of Britain was taken to court by Sanitarium for selling Weetabix, which it imports from Britain.

Justice Glendall granted permanent injunction and ruled that Weetabix can only be sold in specialist UK stores and the word must be covered to protect the Weet-Bix brand.

Sanitarium general manager Rob Scoines said he was “absolutely happy and pleased” with the outcome.

Scoines said the use of stickers was one of the solutions that Sanitarium had offered to Little Bit of Britain as a solution even before the matter went to court.

“It’s not so much about Little Bit of Britain selling Weetabix, but more about the protection of the Weet-Bix trademark,” Scoines said.

“The judgement enables us to

protect our brand, which supports the employment of New Zealanders and contributes to the community.”

Little Bit of Britain, which is based in Christchurch, tried to import Weetabix from the UK last August.

Sanitarium argued that Weetabix was too similar to Weet-Bix, its own cereal brand, and had hundreds of cartons stopped at the border.

A survey, released by the court found that 35 per cent of people mistook Weetabix as a Sanitarium product.

Justice Glendall said A Little Bit of Britain did not intentionally deceive the public, but consumers could be confused by the two brands.

The court ruled that Weetabix products imported for other than private or domestic use must be destroyed.

A Little Bit of Britain could not be reached for comments, but Newshub reported that shop owner Lisa Wilson was “a little bit disappointed” with the decision.

Wilson said the business will continue to import Weetabix, and has yet to decide if she would appeal the decision.

Roading plans cause for concern I

f Andrew Falloon’s information is on the money, then Mid Canterbury residents should have some serious concerns about the proposals for the stretch of road between Ashburton and Rolleston on State Highway One. Just as he has consistently done since he stepped into the MP role 12 months ago, Falloon fired up again yesterday over conversations held behind closed doors by the New Zealand Transport Agency about the road, highlighting a few key areas of concern.

The expansion to a four-lane highway has been Falloon’s baby from the outset, he’s spoken strongly about it on numerous

occasions and taken on ministers and government about the issue – unfortunately, without much success.

The government’s decision to take $5 billion out of the State Highway network and reallocate that spending to Auckland rail and cycleway projects is largely responsible for that roadblock, but it hasn’t tempered Falloon on

the battle.

He took a big swing yesterday at transport minister, Phil Twyford and NZTA over these silent discussions and raised some serious concerns about some of the proposals discussed in those meetings.

There is some merit in a potential median barrier between Ashburton and Rolleston, but it seems wasted if not for a four-lane highway such as those situated in the North Island. If you’re going to do it, at least do it properly.

The idea to reduce the speed limit over the Rakaia Bridge to 80 kilometres per hour is redundant in the fact that most people slow

down when crossing the bridge anyway but reducing the speed limit for the entire stretch of road between the two locations is borderline ridiculous.

By slowing all traffic down, particularly at peak traffic times, there’s only going to be further frustration for drivers which in turn is most likely to cause more poor decisions by the same individuals which could result in a tragic outcome.

But, of all those things outlined from the meetings – the proposal to stop farm equipment from using State Highway One may have the biggest impact locally.

The amount of rural traffic that passes across and along that

road is quite significant on a daily basis and by limiting what can be used on the road is going to cause some major issues for rural folk as they go about their day-to-day lives.

It’s concerning that these discussions are happening behind closed doors and not out in the public forum where everyone who is impacted by the decisionmaking process is given a chance to have their say on the matter.

Let’s just hope that Falloon’s persistence on the matter continues and he ensures that the people of this district aren’t having vital decisions made on their behalf without any serious consultation.

GDP hides the real truth in our economy

he GDP figures came out last week. For the quarter that ended in June, the GDP output rose 1 per cent. Which I’m told is good. So good in fact that it was the largest increase in two years. Great GDP-ing!

This came off the back of a barrage of attacks on the Government for decreasing business and consumer confidence.

Strangely, when the new GDP figures came out, Business NZ chief executive Kirk Hope was very silent.

I guess this was because just a couple of weeks back the business confidence survey his organisation administered was found to railroad chief executives into saying the Government’s proposed employment law changes were bad by giving no positive option. Oops.

But while many on the Government’s side crowed about what a success this meant the coalition was and how great at managing the economy they were, very few stopped and took stock of what it all meant.

Robert Kennedy once criticised GDP as a metric by saying that it included cigarette advertising and prisons but did not include “the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages”.

While the last part may now be a dubious sign of positivity, I think the point is clear. To reinforce; GDP goes up if banks

If something is punishable by a fine, that means it’s actually legal for the rich. Losing $40 was for him a fee. For many, losing $40 would mean not eating proper meals that week, or being unable to afford to go to the doctor.

And so far this Government hasn’t shown itself to be a great mate of the struggling. I mean sure, they’re better mates than the last lot, but increasing the petrol tax? That’s the same as a fine. Rich people can afford a few more cents a litre without it affecting their day-to-day life, poor people drop further back in society.

There was a recommendation for a sugar tax as well. Same deal.

Any tax that isn’t progressively increased is, by its nature, unfair.

The Government needs to stop making poor people pay a disproportionate amount of their meagre incomes for its projects.

I guess it’s at least making noises of being aware of the faux-indicator of GDP. It wants to introduce wellbeing measures into next year’s budget, which is great if they can do it.

It’s not just government rules that make it crap to be poor, outside of government we try to screw down people as much as possible.

During just about any job interview you’ll get asked how much you think you should get paid. They don’t really mean “how much is your labour worth on the labour market?”, what

take more risks with lending, even if the quality of that lending goes down. And we only have to cast our minds back 10 years to remember how well that worked out.

But this GDP metric was such a raging success that the credit agency Moody’s affirmed our triple-A rating and said our economy’s future looked rosy.

Choice! But, again, we only have to cast our minds back 10 years to remember how good Moody’s ratings are at not causing a global financial crisis.

What we seem to measure our economy by is how well rich people are doing. Our whole economy is rigged against people who aren’t in the top tier. New Zealand’s GDP grew faster than at any point in the last two years!

And I don’t just mean it’s great to be rich. I mean that society is built to be easy for the rich.

One weekend, a friend from a well-off family and I drove into the city, and he parked his very expensive European car in a loading zone. I told him that you could still get fined for parking in a loading zone on a Saturday.

He said that it just cost him $40 to park there on a Saturday. The fine wasn’t a deterrent. The fine was just the cost for him to park there.

they really mean is “how low will you sell yourself for?”. If you go too high, you can kiss that job goodbye.

So we’re incentivised to say a low figure. We sell houses by tender, which is the reverse of a job interview. We ask people how high they’re prepared to go and put them in invisible competition with one another thus driving up the price. It’s like the system is designed to give the majority as little money as possible.

There’s a boring old cliché that you get more conservative the older you get. I don’t think this is an age thing. I think it’s true that you get more conservative the richer you get, and historically this was tied in with age.

But as more and more of our income gets trapped at the top tier of society, and getting older no longer means getting richer, we’ll see more disruption in society all around the world. What sort of grading will you give that, Moody’s?

Sky, Spark at odds over piracy plan

Apple’s pricey iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max might be billed as having “the most durable glass ever in a smartphone” but neither device could survive being dropped onto a pavement.

Drop tests from device insurer SquareTrade confirmed that both handsets would be damaged significantly if dropped onto cement from six feet.

While the glass on both phones shattered when dropped, the fate of the iPhone XS was worse in that the screen also malfunctioned.

Repairing these problems would cost the owner hundreds of dollars in replacement fees.

SquareTrade didn’t stop there.

Both phones were also placed in a 60-second tumble test, which caused hairline cracks, loose glass and scratches.

The iPhone XS also suffered the greater damage during a pressure test, with the phone cracking under 250 pounds of pressure and the screen becoming completely inoperable.

Both phones were, however, impressively resilient to beer.

The new iPhone handsets did not fare well when put through a drop test. five feet of beer for 30 minutes, both phones remained operable.

Which is to say that dropping your phone into a glass of your favourite tipple isn’t quite the risk it once was.

Overall, the iPhone XS scored 86 in SquareTrade’s test, making it a high-risk device.

The iPhone XS Max came in

much more durable at 70, which, according to the company’s scale, makes it a medium risk.

Although both devices still rate as quite breakable, they are a significant improvement on the 90 rating of the iPhone X – which SquareTrade previously dubbed the “most breakable iPhone ever”.

Home detention for withholding tax A Christchurch booze baron who admitted his role in a $380,000 tax dodge has been sentenced to six months’ home detention and community work.

Hayden George Jones, 43, who was behind various breweries and bars in Christchurch that suffered after the earthquakes, was yesterday sentenced in the Christchurch District Court for not passing on staff tax deductions for four years.

Inland Revenue spokesperson Karen Whitiskie said Jones’ offending was a “threat to the integrity of the tax system”.

“Jones isn’t a newbie in the business world. He’s been the director of 34 companies since 1997. He was a registered director of each of the companies involved in this case and a signatory on the bank account of each. He could have fixed this, but chose not to,” Whitiskie said.

“It wasn’t a temporary slip.

It was premeditated and prolonged. He deducted the money from his staff’s wages but didn’t pass it on to IR.” - NZME

However, while Sky’s action over illegal Parker fight streaming has been successful, it also illustrates the complications of Sky’s website blocking request. It is unlikely any ISP would want to block Facebook.

Pirie says Spark’s position is constantly under review. It could come under pressure in September next year when the telco streams the Rugby World Cup. He also fears it could skew the market if some ISPs play ball but others don’t.

Some 8 per cent of the population or 300,000 New Zealanders are watching pirated versions of sports events, according to a survey commissioned by Sky TV, while 10 per cent regularly watch pirated movies and TV. And 69 per cent think the likelihood of getting caught is slim.

The figures were extrapolated from interviews with 1009 adults.

Sky says it mirrors a recent survey conducted for NZ on Air. The pay TV broadcaster has also proposed a solution: that internet service providers should block websites that provide “pirate” content.

Sky general counsel Sophie Moloney says 42 countries, including Australia, already have site-blocking, and that New Zealanders favour that approach.

“The majority [68 per cent] of non-pirates say they would be happy for their ISP to block access to a pirate website if it was required by the court to do this,” she says.

However, the largest ISP, Spark, is not on-board with that plan.

It’s not too hot for casserole Spring might be here, but that doesn’t mean we need to abandon the warming comfort foods of winter just yet. It takes a lot to beat a good casserole, one that marries tasty ingredients and good quality meat that’s cooked low and slow. Add vegetables on the side and either potatoes, rice or pasta to serve and you’ll have a satisfying meal.

Beef, bacon and mushrooms

Rich pork casserole

Sausage casserole

2T olive oil 500g trim pork leg rump steaks, diced 2 small chorizo sausages, diced 2 onions, peeled and chopped 2t minced garlic 1C red wine 2C chicken stock 1 400g tin chickpeas 1 400g tin red kidney beans 1/2 C of parsley, chopped 2t cornflour 2t water

500g little pork or beef sausages 1 onion, peeled and sliced 1t minced garlic 2T tomato paste 1T paprika 500g pumpkin, peeled and cubed 1 400g can whole tomatoes in juice, halved 1 1/2 C beef or chicken stock 1 400g tin cannelloni beans, rinsed and well-drained 2T chopped fresh parsley

■ Preheat oven to 170°C. ■ Place the oil in a pan and add the in Fabric pork to brown on all sides.

■ Place in a casserole dish.

■ Add the chorizo sausage to the casserole.

■ Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook until the onion is soft.

■ Add the red wine, chicken stock, chickpeas and kidney beans, and bring to the boil.

■ Pour mixture over the pork.

■ Cover and place in the oven for 1 hour, or until the pork is tender.

■ Mix the cornflour and water together to make a paste.

■ Mix into the stew, and cook for a further 5-10 minutes.

You don’t have to brown meat first, but it does make for a nicer, richer flavour.

Hint:

■ Heat a dash of oil in a large saucepan and quickly brown the sausages on all sides. Set aside.

■ Add the onion and garlic to the pan. Cook over a low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onion begins to soften.

■ Add the tomato paste and paprika and cook for a further 1 minute.

■ Return the sausages to the pan with the pumpkin, tomatoes and juice and stock.

■ Cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes until the pumpkin is just tender.

■ Add the butter beans and cook for a further 3 minutes until everything is hot.

■ Season the dish with salt and pepper and sprinkle over the parsley just before serving.

50g butter 1 1/2 kg topside beef cut into 5cm cubes 2T olive oil 2 onions, peeled and sliced into rings 6 cloves garlic 150g bacon, chopped 250g button mushrooms 3 bay leaves 400g whole peeled tomatoes, in juice 2T red wine vinegar 1t sugar 3T tomato paste 1/2 C red wine 2C beef stock ■ Preheat oven to 150°C. ■ In a heavy-base deep casserole dish or saucepan, melt the butter and brown the meat ■ Remove the meat and set aside.

■ Add the oil and gently cook the onions, garlic and bacon and then add the mushrooms.

■ Return the meat, with the herbs and season with salt and pepper.

■ Mix well and fry for a further minute.

■ Add tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, tomato paste, wine and beef stock.

■ Stir well, then bring to the boil.

■ Cook in oven for 2 1/2 hours until meat is tender. Transfer to stovetop and remove lid.

■ Simmer until thickened, or if need be, thicken with a little flour mixed with cooled casserole liquid.

■ Serve with mashed potatoes and steamed greens.

Chickpeas with lamb

Oven-baked peanut chicken

1/4 C olive oil 1 onion, diced 1 leek, diced 1t turmeric 1/2 t cinnamon 2t ground coriander 2t dill, dried 500g lamb shoulder, cubed 1L chicken stock 1/2 C white wine 1 lemon, halved 1T chopped rosemary 450g tin chickpeas, drained 1t salt 1t freshly ground black pepper

Sauce: 1/4 C peanut butter 2T brown sugar 2T soy sauce 2T rice vinegar 1T sesame oil 1T red curry paste 1t root ginger, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 can coconut milk, 400ml Chicken: 1/4 C cornflour 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper 4 whole chicken legs, divided into thighs and drumsticks 2T rice bran oil

HUGE DISCOUNTS ON W Preheat ovenN to O 160°C.

■ ■ In a large frying pan heat the oil to a medium heat.

■ Add the onion and leek. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes to soften.

■ Stir through the turmeric, cinnamon, coriander and dill until fragrant.

■ Turn up the heat a little and add the lamb, tossing around to get the flavours of the spices.

■ Pour in the stock, wine and add the lemons and rosemary.

■ Cover and place into the oven for 1 1/2 hours.

■ Add chickpeas, season with salt and pepper.

■ Return to the oven for another hour or until the lamb is completely tender.

■ Add a little extra seasoning if required.

■ Serve hot with fluffy couscous and a green vegetable.

■ Whisk the coconut milk and peanut butter together in a medium saucepan.

■ Stir in the brown sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, curry paste, ginger and garlic.

■ Bring to a simmer and cook, uncovered for 10 minutes on low.

■ Preheat the oven to 150°C. ■ Place the cornflour and black pepper in a plastic bag.

■ Add the chicken to the cornflour mixture and shake until well coated.

■ Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan.

■ Brown the chicken on all sides in batches.

■ Place in a casserole. Add the sauce.

■ Cover and cook for about 1 hour.

■ Uncover and continue cooking for 15 minutes, until tender.

Pepper, to taste Dressing: 1T flavourless oil 1T red wine vinegar 1T sweet chilli sauce ■ Preheat an oven to 140°C. ■ Into a deep ovenproof dish place the sliced onions and garlic. Pour over the chicken stock. Combine the brown sugar, fennel seeds, cumin seeds and salt. Rub all over the pork, then place on top of the onions. Cover tightly with tinfoil or a lid. Place in the oven for 4 1/2 hours until the pork is

tender and falling away from the bone.

Remove from the oven. Using two forks pull the pork to shred into pieces. The juice will help it remain juicy and delicious.

To make the apple sauce - place the apples, butter, zest, juice and sugar into a small sauce pan.

Add 1 cm water and cook for 10 minutes until the apples are soft but not too mushy. Remove and cool.

To make the slaw – into a large bowl place the cabbages, carrot, caraway seeds, sesame seeds and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Just before serving add the dressing and toss to combine well.

To serve – preheat the sliders, fill with pulled pork, slaw and a dollop of apple sauce.

Ferns’ journey back to the top W hen a sports team is in a bad place, getting out of that bad place isn’t easy.

The Silver Ferns took to the court in the recent quad series with England, Australia and South Africa with a new coach at the helm in Noeline Taurua and Laura Langman finally back on court as the new captain of the national netball side.

Many hoped that Taurua and Langman would be the key to getting our national netball side back on track after a dismal 18 months.

But realistically, when a team has fallen as far as the Silver Ferns had, climbing back up was never going to be something that would happen straight away.

Heading into that first quad series match against England Kiwi fans were eager to see how much of an impact the new coach had had in just a few short weeks, and if Langman could give the Ferns back that missing spark.

In an ideal world we would have blown them off the court.

Instead, England notched up a record score in beating us.

The fact that we lost wasn’t

that surprising. While we’d been struggling, England had been on the up and up.

World netball had changed dramatically in recent years. Once it was virtually Australia and New Zealand on one level and England, Jamaica and South Africa just lagging behind a little bit.

Now, you’d be hard pressed to pick a winner if any of those five teams were to play each other.

Take Sunday for example, where South Africa gave the Commonwealth Games champions England a real run for their money.

Then, rapidly rising through the world netball ranks you had teams like Malawi and Uganda, which was fantastic for world netball. The official world rankings have Australia at one, followed by England, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa, Malawi and Uganda.

Australia and England deserved those top two placings at the moment, as they showed in the quad series. Both sides had class across the court, something New Zealand was lacking.

The Australians had Caitlin Bassett in the shooting circle whose height and accuracy made her so hard for any defender to combat, and at the other end of the court they had Courtney Bruce. A relative newcomer to international netball, she showed against the Silver Ferns she is one of the world’s best defenders.

Another contender for that title was England’s Geva Mentor, who has the ability to make life difficult for any shooter she comes up against, while down the other end England has Jo Harten in the shooting circle. She didn’t have the height of Bassett but she is super slippery and again, an absolute super shot.

Netball is a team game and every player contributes to a performance, whether it be good or bad, but these four players have x-factor. The players around them allow that x-factor to shine through; Bassett was great, but that ex-basketball style of Gretal

Ravaillion pulls out

Tippet at goal attack made those two a defender’s worst nightmare.

Yes, the Silver Ferns have Maria Folau who is pretty good at those long shots, but there are areas of her game lacking.

Langman is a feisty little midcourter, and in defence Katrina Grant is one of the hardest working people on the court.

But at the moment they are just not as good as some of those other players pulling on the England and Australia dresses.

The return of Langman and having Taurua as coach is a good thing for the Ferns. They will give Australia and England a run for their money eventually, it is just a matter of when.

Will it be in two weeks when the four-test Constellation Cup against the Aussies kicks off? I don’t think so. I’m predicting good, tough, physical games – as any top international netball match is these days – but I’m picking Australia to keep the Constellation Cup. If the Silver Ferns could pick up a win from one of the four games, that would be a massive step forward on the trip back up to the top.

Veteran midcourter Kim Ravaillion has pulled out of Australia’s Constellation Cup series with New Zealand to recharge ahead of the upcoming Netball World Cup. Ravaillion says she needs some time away from her international duties, with the Australians set to defend their world title in Liverpool next July. “I’m so honoured to be a member of this team and I want to be able to really give my all to it,” she said. “In order for me to do this, I’ve decided to step aside from the next international series to allow myself to regenerate, both physically and mentally.”

Folau links with T-birds New Zealand netball’s shooting sensation Maria Folau has been announced as the 10th and final member of the Adelaide Thunderbirds team for the 2019 Super Netball season.

Thunderbirds coach Tania Obst said Folau was a “significant signing”, after the team failed to win a single game in the recently completed campaign. “I’m most excited about the wealth of experience, the world class quality that Maria will bring to our team and the contribution that she’ll be able to make to our team both on and off the court,” Obst said yesterday.

Taurua waves axe Silver Ferns defenders could be on the chopping block as coach Noeline Taurua looks to change things up ahead of next month’s Constellation Cup. Concluding their first international campaign since the Commonwealth Games with a 5-goal loss to the Australian Diamonds on Sunday, the Ferns looked to be in promising form with evident improvements across the court.

However, one win from three games wasn’t good enough for Taurua.

She said the series closer had exposed the Ferns’ lack of fight on the court as she urged her side to toughen up before facing the Diamonds again next month.

Taurua suggested that the new-look

side could be switched up again, with the possibility of calling up players from the wider squad not used in the Quad Series, and potentially from the New Zealand A squad, ahead of the team naming next week.

“There were areas where we were exposed and probably never had enough firepower to look at changing up ... so we need to look at what we have at home,” Taurua said.

“I don’t know if I’d call it experimenting, I would like to think I’m going to be quite strategic in what I need to do.

“We’ll look at some of the others that are at home and the level underneath.”

In brief Boks wary of Wallabies A rare win in New Zealand showed South Africa what they were capable of but halfback Faf De Klerk won’t be satisfied unless they produce the same precision against the Wallabies on Saturday.

The Springboks revived their campaign with a rousing 36-34 defeat of the All Blacks that followed losses in Australia and Argentina.

In the hours that followed that upset, the Wallabies were shocked 23-19 by Argentina and as a result arrive in Port Elizabeth for Saturday’s rematch with their backs firmly to the wall. Not having won in South Africa since 2011, they face an uphill battle to claw off the bottom of the ladder.

Mitchell starts journey The hunting down of the All Blacks as the game’s pre-eminent side began in earnest for one of their own this week as John Mitchell started his tenure as the England defence coach with a full-on session at Clifton College. The New Zealander’s methods are designed to hit the mark “of being the best within a year’s time”, if the World Cup is to be won in Japan. There is little doubt that England need to raise their game if they are to compete with the All Blacks, who, Mitchell believes, have set a “come and get us” challenge to opponents.

Cheika hangs tough

Popular tennis comp back on the court Mid Canterbury Tennis’ Twilight Tennis competition is set to hit the courts for the 2018/19 season next week, and there’s still room for more teams. The competition – played at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre – can take a total of 28 teams and it’s aimed at social players. It’s a fun doubles competition which sees mixed teams of three (maximum of two men) compete on Wednesday nights throughout the summer, using a handicap scoring system. The competition is split into two sections, one more competitive than the other, and entry forms are available online at www.midcanterburytennis.co.nz. If you want to play but can’t make up your own team, contact Mid Canterbury Tennis and they’ll try and slot you into a team. Twilight tennis breaks over Christmas and resumes in January, with play going through until March 20 next year. The first night is next Wednesday, while the Sunset Doubles competition will get under way the following night.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika says he is holding his nerve as calls for change get louder. Aussie rugby boss Raelene Castle has floated the idea that former Wallabies might be brought in to assist Cheika in the build up to the World Cup but he is not having any of it. “Who has been talking about that ... if you’re going to ask me, you’ve got to tell me what they are going to be doing,” Cheika said.

“I don’t know ... it’s up to them (Rugby Australia),’’ he told the Daily Telegraph. Cheika said it was vital also to hold his nerve with selections because he never wants to make a soft call just to please detractors and buy time.

Strong response to defeat expected

The next two weeks will reveal much about who this All Blacks team really is.

Prior to the loss in Wellington, many of us bemoaned the diminishing quality of the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks were untouchable, or so it seemed. One defeat does not alter the entire complexion of test rugby but the Springboks brought a healthy dose of reality, and valuable perspective about staying grounded.

Even had Damian McKenzie made that final pass for the match-winning try, many questions, internal and external, would remain about the All Blacks’ tactical approach in the capital.

As it was, the All Blacks landed in familiar Buenos Aires this week with Steve Hansen’s game management criticism ringing in their ears. And, no doubt, motivation set on immediately righting those wrongs.

They will also be well aware, however, the Pumas and Boks, in front of their equally passionate people, present much tougher challenges than recent years may suggest.

This two-leg trip is not the jaunt the All Blacks have made it seem at times.

The Pumas now appear a team on the rise, buoyed by their win over the Wallabies in Perth and, more holistically, refreshed and refocused with the change in direction Mario Ledesma has inspired.

While not the finished product by any stretch, they are a genuine threat. Look no further than the form of playmaker Nicolas Sanchez.

Having already pulled off a convincing win over the Boks in Mendoza, belief must be firming they can knock off the All Blacks for the first time, or at least give them a proper scare.

The challenge, as always with the Pumas, is to sustain efforts; not fade over the final quarter when emotion drains. Theirs is the Latin temperament, after all.

Many of this All Blacks squad, those accustomed to Buenos Aires, will appreciate the need to start well to quell the feverish atmosphere that lifts locals the longer they stay in the fight.

But with captain Kieran Read,

Brodie Retallick, Liam Squire and Joe Moody all absent from the pack this week, pressure falls on other drivers to step up and lead.

It promises to be a big occasion for some newer additions – Shannon Frizell, the recalled Vaea Fifita, Karl Tu’inukuafe and even the excellent Jack Goodhue if he gets another crack in the midfield with Sonny Bill Williams due back.

A different form of pressure comes following a loss.

The potentially inexperienced bench, in comparison to previous years, must also shoulder a large degree of responsibility for closing out this match.

It will not be an easy ride.

For the All Blacks, expectations never change. No matter the circumstances we demand they win every test – and usually win them

well, too. A swift response to rare defeats has become the norm.

This time around, though, there is perhaps more nagging doubt due to the improving state of the opposition.

Hansen will now expect a mental edge in training to forecast the necessary reaction.

With the Bledisloe Cup safely locked away, and the Japanese test expected to give fringe players chances, this two-week venture is the All Blacks’ most important before London in November.

Stripping back the layers previously, their core characteristics have prevailed.

No test is ever the same. But this side must now answer those same, probing questions.

How they emerge will be revealing.

In brief Lino exits Warriors Mason Lino has cut ties with the Warriors and signed a two-year NRL deal with the Newcastle Knights.

Samoan international halfback Lino was granted a release from the final year of his Warriors contract and has taken up an offer from Knights coach Nathan Brown. The nuggety Lino, 24, is a former Warriors youth player who notched 17 first grade games across three seasons, including eight this year.

Chambers ‘the toughest’

BY MATT ENCARNACION Latrell Mitchell believes he’s got everyone covered. Everyone but Will Chambers.

“Everyone else, I’ve sort of done a good job on them,” Mitchell says.

“But other than that, he’d have to be the toughest I’ve played.”

It’s why the Sydney Roosters star is bracing for his biggest game in what has been the biggest year of his life in Sunday’s NRL grand final against Melbourne.

Having already faced off in three ding-dong battles between the game-breaking centres in State of Origin this year, Mitchell knows exactly what to expect from the Kangaroos incumbent.

“He’s going to do the same thing,” he says.

And that means bracing for another verbal barrage from one of the game’s best sledgers.

But his reputation mattered little to Mitchell in Origin this year, where he broke out as arguably the game’s most damaging centre since Greg Inglis.

In his Origin debut, Mitchell busted 13 tackles, while Chambers missed eight.

“It’s footy.

“You talk to each other and that’s what you do to the opposition, try and get them off their game so you can do what you need to do,” he says.

Another reason Mitchell enjoys the trash talk is that it keeps him on his toes.

Gundown ready to fire The Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman is set to kick off another exciting stable runner’s spring campaign this week, but those plans are weather-dependent.

The dual stakes-placed Gundown is set to resume at Matamata today in the Celebrating Avantage-Te Akau’s 6th Champion 2YO (1600m), but a decision on whether he will start will be left until raceday morning.

“He’s good, but he might not start yet.

“It’s wet down here, so we will probably wait until the morning to make a decision,” Baker said.

The High Chaparral gelding showed promise late in his threeyear-old season when he was runner-up in the Gr.2 Championship Stakes (2100m) and Gr.3 Manawatu Classic (2000m).

He has pleased his connections with his two trials this term, but Baker believes he will need the run today, where he is set to jump out of barrier two with Matthew Cameron aboard.

“We’re happy with him, he has trialled up well and once he gets over ground I think he will be a chance,” Baker said.

Gundown is down to start at Matamata today, but plans may change.

“I think he will probably need the run tomorrow and we’ll just work him through the grades after that.”

Green light for track Following a successful test on its course proper on Monday, the Auckland Racing Club have confirmed racing will resume at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday October 27. Ellerslie has not hosted any race meetings since Auckland Cup Week in March, to allow for a drainage upgrade to the club’s track. The most important victory of Melody Belle’s season might not come until next season. Because the former age group star’s stunning spring campaign has made her the early favourite for the coveted Horse of the Year title, which isn’t actually announced until next August. Anointing even the brightest star as a potential Horse of the Year before we even get to October might sound a tad premature but Bonneval won the title last season without running a placing after October 1. And Melody Belle has already achieved something in three starts this term that no New Zealand-trained thoroughbred did in the whole of last season.

The successful applicant will display a love of food, a desire to learn new skills and the ability to work in a fast paced team environment.

This position is 40 – 45 hours per week with days to be discussed. Butchery or Food Industry experience would be helpful, but not essential as training will be given.

Bucking the trend

By Christopher reive It seems after five years in the NBA, American media are yet to figure Steven Adams out.

Amid his preseason media day press conference – a usual mix of awkward and informative – the 25-year-old had his character called into question, with a local reporter asking if he put on a performance each time he fronted the media.

“I’m quite an awkward guy,” Adams responded.

“It’s a weird situation, especially to ask someone how they personally act when they’re up on stage.

“It’s a different sort of thing.

“I’m just an awkward guy, let’s leave it at that.”

It was one of a number of topics brought up during the press conference, with topics covering such facets of the upcoming season as his new team-mates and his offensive game.

He made one thing very clear: he has no intention of conforming to fit the trend of the modern day NBA big man any time soon.

As more and more centres look to be able to extend their games past the three-point line, Adams broke out as one of the league’s elite in the position last season by grinding away in the post – drawing praise from legendary NBA big man Hakeem Olajuwon in the process.

Asked if he had any plans to incorporate a three-point shot into his arsenal, the big Kiwi sat almost in disbelief at the question.

“Shoot a three? No, absolutely not,” Adams said.

“I don’t want to lose my job.”

Unlike a lot of big men in the NBA today, Adams has not needed to extend his offensive game outside the paint to be effective.

It will be a feature of the Thunder’s centre stocks this season, with the addition of Nerlens Noel.

Noel was drafted in the same class as Adams – selected six picks before Adams at 12 – and fills a similar role.

Noel is a presence big man whose physicality is his best asset.

He’ll play solid backup minutes behind Adams, which will provide some much needed size to the Thunder’s second unit.

CRAFTS, Neville Francis – On September 23, 2018, passed away suddenly but peacefully at Radius Millstream, Ashburton. In his 92nd year. Dearly loved husband of the late Colinna (Betty). Loved and respected brother and brother in law of the late Syd and May, June and the late Malcolm Cunneen, the late Rex, and Barbara, Lynette and Doug Tatterson, and Tony and Denise. Much loved and respected uncle and great uncle of all his nieces and nephews. Messages to the Crafts family, PO Box 472, Ashburton 7740. A Requiem Mass to celebrate Neville’s life will be held at the Church of the Holy Name, Sealy Street, Ashburton on WEDNESDAY, September 26, commencing at 11.00am.

Followed by private cremation at the Ashburton Crematorium.

Canterbury went away from the Ashburton Golf Club with the bragging rights after getting the better of Aorangi in an annual representative match between the two golfing regions on Sunday.

Fine spring conditions made for a perfect day for golf with some tricky pin positions testing players’ putting skills, and while Canterbury dominated in the senior men, women’s and junior battles, Aorangi came out on top in the

men’s masters matches.

Canterbury’s day got off to a strong start in the battle of the senior men, leading 6.5-1.5 after the first 18 holes.

But Aorangi proved a much tougher proposition in the afternoon, narrowing the margin with Canterbury just sneaking through 4.5-3.5 making it an overall win to Canterbury 11-5.

For Canterbury, Andrew Green, Reid Hilton and Ben Baker had

100 per cent win records, while Aorangi was well served by Daniel Perham, who showed class being unbeaten in the top position, and other wins came from Brett Strange and Damian Rodgers.

In the men’s masters section five matches went to the last hole, but Aorangi’s steady and experienced line up proved too good to ensure it was Aorangi’s day, beating Canterbury 8.5-3.5.

For Aorangi, Jason Leary and

Tinwald’s Nigel Heney were unbeaten at the top of the order and were well supported by their team mates.

Both associations are set to lock horns again in a couple of weeks when the South Island Masters Interprovincial is played at the Pegasus Golf Club.

In the junior section the day was even from start to finish for the regions’ top under-19 golfers, and at day’s end it was shared

three matches apiece with Canterbury’s Kansuke Shin and Ashburton’s Josh Ackerley both unbeaten.

In the women’s match, Canterbury proved too strong to retain the Templar Trophy, winning 15.5-5.5, with Ashburton’s Pauline Bell the shining light for the Aorangi women with a win and a half, while Angela Gerken and another Ashburton player – Catherine Knight – taking a win each.
