Wheelie bin costs will see rates hike

When it comes to the impact the Ashburton District Council’s wheelie bin project will have on rates, the answer is complicated, says council business services manager Paul Brake.

At a meet the candidates meeting held last week, councillor Donna Favel told the audience that rates would rise in urban Ashburton in the 2017/2018 year by 18 per cent.

She gave no explanations and the bald statement left the audience stunned.

That figure, without some detail, does not paint the true picture of the cost of wheelie bins, Mr Brake said.

When councillors debated the introduction of wheelie bins during discussions on the district’s long-term plan that spells out how rates money will be spent over a 10-year period, they were faced with two choices – let the current rubbish bag kerbside collection continue or plan for the introduction of wheelie bins which the community clearly indicated it wanted.

Wheelie bins, however, would push the overall increase in rates for the 20172018 year up by more than 11 per cent.

Urban ratepayers, however would be facing a greater increase – 13 per cent for the bins and 5 per cent for other costs, Mr Brake said.

“On an average value house in the Ashburton area the dollar increase is $319 and of this $230 relates to refuse rate increases, that’s 13 per cent. However, the refuse rate increase means that people will no longer have to buy bags.”

The bins are estimated to come with a $2.1 million price tag for year one, dropping to $1.9 million for year two. The current black bag system costs $1.3 million a year to run.

Celebrating older people

Next Saturday marks this year’s International Day of the Older Person and the theme is standing up to Ageism.

Age Concern Ashburton president Trish Small said the day was about reminding the community about the value of older people.

“Ageism is the thinking from younger people that older folk don’t have anything more to con-

tribute. Whereas actually they do have a great deal to contribute in all sorts of areas different areas in social and economic living,” she said.

In 1990 the United Nations General assembly set October 1 aside as the day to celebrate all older people to highlight their value and to promote dignity and respect.

She said there were a number of different organisations that supported older people and Age Con-

cern was one of them.

Locally, Age Concern provides services that enable older people to lead healthier, socially connected, safe and respected lives.

Earlier in the year at the Age Concern annual conference the motto used was ‘power of the past, force of the future’ and Small said it demonstrated part of what Age Concern was about.

In Ashburton there is the 206 Club, The 50 Plus Club, which

runs for six weeks twice year and also courtesy drivers and the assessment for total mobility which provides reduced prices for taxi fares.

“I think the whole thing with the International Day of the Older Person is to try and keep the focus on the fact that older members of the community have a great deal to offer and they are more than willing to contribute in whatever field they can,” she said.

As part of celebrations for the day Age Concern is putting on a variety concert on Sunday, October 16 in the Ashburton Seniors’ Centre.

The concert starts at 2pm and features local artists as well as guest artist Judy Glen, who is from Australia.

Tickets are $5 and are available by calling the Seniors’ Centre on 308-6817 or visiting them at 206 Cameron Street.

Stage set for a boomer Bookarama Yesterday the Ashburton Sports Hall was an oasis of calm, its vast spaces echoing to footfalls and gentle chatter as thousands of books were neatly stacked on trestle tables by Ashburton Rotarians.

That calm will end at 8am today, however, when the hall’s doors open for Ashburton’s annual book lovers’ festival, Bookarama.

For months Rotarians have been checking, sorting and boxing books donated from homes around the Ashburton District.

Over the weekend those books were laid out by category ready for six days where the reading public will sift and sort, pick up and discard them as they search for bargains.

The event is a huge fundraiser for Ashburton Rotary, but it’s an event that also demands a huge input from members.

Over the coming days they will be out in large numbers taking money, tidying tables and keeping an eye on stocks.

Bookarama attracts buyers from around the South Island, with dealers some of the first through the door as they search for the rare, the unusual and the collectible.

They’re never alone though in the early morning wait, with a queue often numbering more than 50 lined up for up to an hour before doors open in the hope of being the first to bag a bargain.

Money raised from Bookarama goes to charity.

Ashburton’s Bookarama runs in the Ashburton Sports hall from this morning until noon on Saturday with late nights on Tuesday and Thursday.

Call to save heritage sites

One of Ashburton’s longest serving dance teachers is concerned about how willing people are to knock down heritage sites.

Charmaine Quaid has been teaching dance in Balmoral Hall for over 40 years and said it is heart-breaking to hear people talk about knocking the hall down.

Ashburton District Council has been looking at a number of plans across several sites for the new civic building and library.

Balmoral Hall is one of the suggested sites and if it’s selected the current building will be knocked down and replaced.

Quaid said it would be a huge loss to the community as a number of groups still use the hall, including a church group and many dance classes.

“We would have in excess of over 300 people in here during the week,” she said.

Quaid teaches a range of dance styles such as ballet, jazz, musical theatre, hip hop and contemporary dance most days of the week,

excluding Wednesday and Sunday.

There are also highland dance classes on Wednesday and line dancing on during the evenings and some mornings.

She said the room in Balmoral Hall is perfect because of its windows and wooden floor, which is great for a dancer’s legs.

“Most of the newer premises are concrete floors which are a no-no for dancers’ legs,” she said.

Quaid said commercial spaces like the events centre would also have to be rented out, so classes would be out of the question.

When examiners come from overseas to see students they often comment on how lucky Ashburton is to have the space.

She said while the hall isn’t quite yet a heritage site, it is still valuable and has stood the test of time and the test of surviving the earthquakes, as well as being in a good central location.

She said losing a site like the Methodist Church on Baring Square would also be a huge shame.

Wheelie bin costs Children rescued from car will see rates hike

A car with three children in it stuck on a flooded road in the Coromandel Peninsula has been towed to safety.

The children aged nine, 10 and 11 are safe, Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says.

The car was caught in flooding from the Tairua River at Hikuai Settlement Road, which leads to Pauanui.

It’s one of a growing number of flooding incidents the Fire Service is responding to as heavy rain falls on Auckland and across the Bay of Plenty and beyond.

Wharekawa River, also in the Coromandel Peninsula, is being monitored as it’s close to flood-

ing SH 25 and high tide is due on Sunday afternoon.

In Auckland, a block of three units is flooded in Portadown Avenue, Pakuranga.

Ponds at Wattle Farm Reserve, Wattle Downs in southern Auckland are threatening to overflow and flood roads.

At Massey University’s Albany campus to the north of the city crews are digging drains to divert water from entering an accommodation block.

The Fire Service also responded to about a dozen calls about flooding from Mairangi Bay to Manurewa yesterday afternoon and most were basements and garages flooded.

Firefighters were also called out to Whitianga to help a woman who could not leave her house due to flooding but it turned out to be a flooded garage.

In a severe weather warning, the MetService says a trough is moving slowly southwards over the upper North Island preceded by easterly winds and a band of rain. The heavy rain is expected to cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly and may cause slips and surface flooding.

Rain should ease in the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty northwest of Tauranga today. It will likely continue into tomorrow morning about Gisborne.

For families buying more bags per week, the increase would

drop and significantly, he said.

When people were looking at the budgeted impact of wheelie bins, they should also remember that the budget council had set was conservative and the actual cost of the service was likely to be lower.

The community through a series of surveys and through submissions at annual plan time had made it very clear to the council that it wanted a wheelie bin collection in Ashburton. The council’s job now was to ensure that service was introduced at the lowest possible cost, Mr Brake said.

Town hits air pollution target As Environment Canterbury ticks of its new air plan, Ashburton is leading the way as one of the only airsheds in the region to have met the Government’s target of no more than three high pollution days by September 1.

This week ECan accepted the recommendations of the Independent Hearing Commissioners on the proposed Canterbury Air Regional Plan, which aims to help to continue to improve air quality in the region.

Home heating is listed as the number one contributor to air

pollution and while the plan does not ban wood burning fires, it only allows fires that are newer than 15 years and that meet clean burning criteria.

ECan commissioner David Bedford said that the efforts of the past 10 years have shown improvements across Canterbury.

“In 2008, for example, there were 125 days on which air quality across the region exceeded the World Health Organisation guidelines. This last winter, the number of days where guidelines were exceeded was just 50.”

Those improvements had come because of a huge community effort, Bedford said.

As well as setting out guidelines for woodburner standards, the air plan also introduces a requirement for wood burners to emit visible smoke for no more than 15 minutes at start-up.

The air plan also provides rules to control burning and odours in the rural areas that were previously uncontrolled, and allows industry to continue in polluted airsheds providing they contribute no additional pollution to

the airshed. The new plan also marked the first time that Timaru and Waimate have had air rules which will see new, cleaner-burning technologies progressively replace older-style wood burners.

The plan will now be notified and submitters can lodge appeals. Depending how long they take to resolve, the plan is likely to become operative in December.

The final targets set by the Government, of no more than one high pollution day per year, are effective from September 2020.

A big smile all around Mid Canterbury

A bright blue, curvy couch will be making its way around the Ashburton District over the coming weeks with just one job on its mind – encouraging locals to stop, sit, smile and chat.

The curvy couch is the visual reminder that there’s a new campaign abroad – Start with a Smile. Its focus is encouraging locals to smile and start a conversation with someone from a different background.

The campaign was launched on Friday and builds on a project run in October last year by the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. Its objective was to find a fun, innovative and quirky way to help newcomers to Canterbury working on the rebuild to connect with Cantabrians, council community relations manager Vincie Billante said.

“We’ve picked it up and adapted it and our focus is how to make everyone feel welcome in Ashburton,” she said.

“The smile couch represents a smile that’s a universal language, it breaks all barriers. We hope the couch will encourage people to sit down and get to know one another.”

If those on the couch struggle to move beyond a smile, there are a pocket full of conversation starters to get the words rolling, Billante said.

For the Ashburton District a project that encouraged locals and newcomers to become friends was particularly relevant as mayor Angus McKay is leading the Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s migrants’ project, she said.

“We’re going to start spreading the love with a big smile all around Canterbury.”

In brief Fatal shooting Police are still looking for an Auckland man following a fatal shooting in a Manurewa driveway.

Bodi McKee, 23, is still being sought by police on Sunday morning after a 32 -year-old man died from a gunshot wound to the stomach on Saturday. Police say McKee is Maori, 183cm tall, of medium build, and has tattoos on his left shoulder and left forearm.

He may have a gun and should not be approached, they say. He was allegedly involved in a fight with a man he knew at a house on Winsford Street about 7am on Saturday before the shooting, police say.

Car crashes into creek A man has died after becoming trapped underwater when the car he was in crashed into a Northland creek. Police were called to the scene of the incident at Omanaia at about 10pm on Saturday. A second person in the car managed to escape the vehicle with only minor injuries, but the other man became trapped and died at the scene, police said.

Car hits tree A man is dead after a car left a road and struck a tree in Northland. Police were called to the crash on State Highway 1, near Towai, just after midnight on Sunday. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Kawakawa Hospital, but the passenger died at the scene, police said.

An Auckland motorcyclist fleeing from police has died after crashing into a parked car. Police said the man failed to take the Royal Oak roundabout, falling off his bike and hitting a vehicle after not stopping for officers who tried to pull him over for speeding at 1.15am on Sunday in Mount Albert. He died at the scene.

Darryl looking to the future When the winners’ and losers’ names are posted after this year’s local body elections, Darryl Nelson’s won’t be on the list. He’s calling time on a local body career that spanned 21 years and talks to reporter Sue Newman about the future.

t’s not until you look back you realise just how far you’ve come or what you’ve achieved, says retiring Ashburton District councillor Darryl Nelson.

But the journey and the list of achievements he looks back on over his 21-year span as a councillor are not his, they’re a collective effort, belonging to the councillors and council staff who were part of the civic team over that time, he says.

As a first time councillor, at 44 he was a relative youth among what was traditionally a council table populated by retirees.

“It’s fair to say I didn’t join to supplement my pension. I had a nursery at Rakaia at the time and I stood for what was the new Rakaia ward. Eight of us stood and John Leadley and I got on,” he said.

For him, putting his name forward as a council candidate was simply about stepping up his community involvement. At the time he was a volunteer firefighter, was heavily involved in scouts and had been on the Rakaia School board of trustees.

“Plus there were a few issues in Rakaia that I wanted to see resolved. Decisions had been made to do some work out there but it hadn’t started, there’d been no sealing of streets for years, there was a big catch up of work needed and I wanted to make sure it was done and done right,” Darryl said.

He admits he was fortunate in that his self-employment status

meant he could take time out from work for council. Not everyone could or can, but if you’re going to commit to anything like this then you have to make a serious commitment of your work and personal time, he said.

Those first few months as a new district councillor are always challenging, but in many ways, the ‘job’ was exactly what he had expected it would be, Darryl said.

“Yes, it’s a slow process to get things done but if you understand that process, you know you’ll get there. You’re learning a heck of a lot of stuff for a heck of a long time.”

The key to getting a handle on the business of council, he said, is to read, read and do more reading and to make sure you are totally up to speed with everything in the agenda for every meeting.

believed it should have been. But that’s the way democracy works, you have your say, you vote and you move on to support whatever the majority have agreed to.

“One of those was the art gallery–museum. I was always against this, what was put up to us but we knew we had to do something and I have to concede that for the future what we’ve got is good. You quickly learn that if you’re a lone voice you can’t change the day.”

Over his time he’s earned a reputation as a straight shooter, a councillor who has never been afraid to speak out and voice his opinion.

When you look back over 21 years it’s clear how far the district has progressed, he said, but no matter how much you enjoy local body politics, there comes a time when you know it’s time to move

on, Darryl said.

“I’d had enough, done my time, done my bit. Yes, I’ll miss it and it’ll be hard not to be involved in making decisions for the community, but I’ll do more of what I’ve been doing.”

And for Darryl what he’s been doing is indulging in his passion for old stuff, specifically trains, trucks, tractors. He has a red hot ambition to be part of a tractor trek and admits if the offer ever comes his way, he’ll be off.

If he has any regrets in retiring it is that so many of his peers are signing off at the same time – six in total.

“You always need balance on a council with some older councillors who know the background to issues, but I’m finished, I’m over it and I won’t be waiting and watching for results on election night.”

1963 Pontiac Laurentian

evin and Bernie Harkness’ old family car is over five metres long and Kevin said it only just fits in their garage.

The Harkness’ have owned their 1963 Pontiac Laurentian since 1975 and Kevin said that when they bought it, the car had only clocked up 31,000 miles.

Now it has done 87,000 miles.

They used the Pontiac as their family car and they have travelled all over the South Island in it.

Kevin said one of the best trips was to Bluff many years ago, but now they only bring the Pontiac out for vintage car club runs and rallies.

The car originally belonged to a man Kevin used to do some work for and when he thought

about selling the Pontiac, Kevin put his hand up to buy it.

“I couldn’t sell my car in time so I missed out,” he said.

He said he later traded in his car for the Pontiac when he saw it was at Gluyas Motors.

“It’s nice to look at, I have always liked looking at it,” Kevin said.

The 1963 Pontiac Laurentian has a 4.6-litre, V8-engine and a top speed of 96.5 miles an hour.

It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 11.65 seconds and although the Harkness’ Pontiac is a hard top, soft tops were also available.

Kevin said that in the 41 years they have owned the car it has never given them any trouble.

In fact, over those 41 years the biggest overhaul the Pontiac had was when the brakes and master cylinder had to be replaced.

Hurley to hit Ashburton Ben Hurly is a well-known comedian from the television series 7 Days and winner of the 2004 Oddfellows Billy T Award and the 2008 Fred Dagg Award.

Ben takes us around every single country in the world, one joke at a time.

Art Galllery patron farewelled The 32nd annual general meeting of the Ashburton Art Gallery Incorporated Society was held on Thursday, September 15, with close to 30 people in attendance.

The AGM is a special time for the gallery committee as it allows members the opportunity to reflect and celebrate the achievements for the year.

Reappointed for his final term as president of the gallery committee, Bernard Davidson said “It’s a time for us to stop and take stock of all that’s happened in 12 months and gives us a chance to recognise the hard work of our staff, committee and volunteers.”

By all accounts it has been a phenomenal year of activity for the gallery which has now been open on West Street for 16 months.

With a total of 20 different exhibitions and 20,025 visitors since July 2015 the gallery is a facility that is being well utilised and supported by the community.

Gallery manger/curator Shirin Khosraviani was ecstatic to present the gallery’s annual report stating that all council performance targets had been achieved.

“Our targets are not a walk in the park for us. We have to work hard to ensure our exhi-

bitions and activities are serving our growing and changing community while achieving the goals set out for the year. I’m incredibly proud of our success to date,” she said.

This AGM was doubly significant as it marked the end of a 10 year term for patron Richard Conway.

Conway played a pivotal role in establishing a public art gallery in Ashburton and served on the original steering committee and subsequent gallery committee which secured the use of the County Council building for a museum and gallery.

Davidson acknowledged Conway’s enthusiastic support

of the gallery and thanked him for his continued guidance and service.

Following the AGM, the newly appointed gallery committee voted in favour of outgoing councillor Don McLeod to take over the position of patron.

“Don McLeod has not only been an unfailing advocate for the arts and culture sector, he is also a man of great integrity whose outstanding leadership skills secured the final touches desperately required for the completion of the building we now occupy, said Khosraviani.

“We are thrilled and honoured to have him as our patron.”

Register owners as well as dogs Sue Newman

he SPCA and the Government are set for a headto-head clash over plans to introduce tough new rules around aggressive dogs.

Those rules have been developed in response to public outrage at the increasing number of dog attacks on humans and other animals. Often the dogs responsible belong to a handful of breeds or mixed breeds and it seems logical that a first step to stopping attacks would be to ban those breeds.

Included in the new rules is a requirement for the SPCA to stop rehoming dogs that are on the list of problem breeds. The SPCA says that will condemn thousands of decent dogs to death and it claims that it does not rehome any dog that is of an aggressive nature. This may well be true, but dog attacks continue.

Dog lovers claim that any dog can go bad if it’s not well treated and any breed can become a loving pet if it’s well treated. But unfortunately the dogs that are by nature more aggressive are too often owned by owners on the social fringe. Bad dog, bad owner.

If the Government is serious about getting New Zealand’s aggressive dog problem under control there is a much easier and tidier way of doing this. Register dog owners.

Let owning a dog be like owning a gun. You don’t licence the gun, you licence the owner and that’s how it should be with dogs.

Everyone who owns a dog today should be required to sit a basic dog ownership test, have their property inspected and then go on the approved owner register. New dog owners could not acquire a pet until they’d done the paper work and received the appropriate registration.

Annual dog registration would continue as a check that the owner and dog were both legal.

Implementing this would be costly and it would be time consuming for local authorities who would no doubt be charged with the job. But it would work.

As part of its dog control regime councils would be required to undertake spot checks of dog owner properties, as they do with swimming pools and fencing and we’d be well on the way to ensuring every dog owner was a good dog owner.

Shooting video released Charlotte police have released two videos showing the fatal shooting of a black man that has unleashed days of protests, but the footage has failed to settle the central question of whether shooting victim Keith Scott was holding a gun.

Protesters who have gathered in Charlotte in the US every day since the Tuesday shooting demanding that police release the body-cam and dashboard video marched again at the weekend.

Both Scott’s family and protesters have disputed the police statements that Scott was carrying a gun.

The controversy over Scott’s death has made Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, the latest flashpoint in two years of tense protests over US police killings of black men, most of them unarmed.

Before the release of the footage, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney acknowledged that the videos themselves were “insufficient” to prove that Scott held a gun. But he said that the totality of evidence, including eyewitness testimony, supported the conclusion that Scott was armed.

In a statement accompanying the video release, police said Scott was shot by Officer Brentley Vinson as he backed away from his vehicle.

“Officer Vinson perceived Mr Scott’s actions and movements as an imminent physical threat to himself and the other officers,” the statement said.

Police released pictures along with the clips, including photos of a handgun and an ankle holster that authorities said Scott had been wearing at the time of the shooting.

Police said that the gun recovered at the scene was loaded and had Scott’s fingerprints and DNA. But Scott’s family, which released its own video of the encounter on Friday, said the footage showed the father of seven was not acting aggressively and that the police shooting made no sense. The family video, shot by Scott’s wife, was also inconclusive on the question of a gun.

Masterpiece found A lost Victorian portrait, which has been rediscovered on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, has “stunned the art world”.

The work is by Neoclassical painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who is “the most valuable Victorian artist today” after one of his large paintings sold for $US36 million ($NZ50 million), according to the programme’s pictures expert Rupert Maas. The treasure features the engraver Leopold Lowenstam, whose great-great grandson brought it to an Antiques Roadshow event at Arley Hall, near Northwich, Cheshire, in June. It was a wedding gift to Mr Lowenstam, a close family friend, and his wife Alice Search in 1883. She was the governess of Sir Lawrence’s children.

It shows Scott standing outside his vehicle before he is shot, but it is not clear whether he has something in his hand. The officer then moves and Scott is out of view until he is seen lying on the ground.

Scott’s family and family attorneys said the videos showed Scott walking away slowly from officers at the time he was struck by bullets.

Ray Dotch, Scott’s brother-in-law, said much of the media attention has focused on what kind of person Scott was. Although he was a “good person,” Dotch said, what really matters is that “he was an American citizen who deserved better”.

Hundreds marched through the centre of Charlotte at the weekend, including white and black families protesting police violence.

Prince William and Kate have arrived in Canada with their children for a highly anticipated eight-day tour.

William and Kate last visited a few months after their 2011 wedding and have now returned with three-year-old Prince George and Princess Charlotte, 16 months.

The royal family arrived in a Royal Canadian Air Force jet that landed at Patricia Bay, the home of a maritime helicopter squadron close to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.

Waiting at the bottom of the plane’s steps to greet them was Canada’s prime minster Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire.

But all eyes were on the young prince and princess who are rarely seen in public together and likely to steal the limelight away from their parents.

The tour is Charlotte’s first official royal visit, but George travelled to Australia and New Zealand with his parents in 2014 when he was nine months old.

Highlights of the trip to Canada’s east coast will see William and Kate experience the stunning natural world of the province of British Columbia and the territory of Yukon, where they will go fishing, sightseeing and meet First Nations communities.

Pitt rumours slammed The husband of Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard has hit out at rumours his wife was romantically entangled with Brad Pitt. The French star, 40, was dragged into Angelina Jolie and Pitt’s divorce, when reports claimed she and Pitt had an affair while filming upcoming World War Two drama Allied. Cotillard has already responded to the rumours, confirming she is expecting her second child with French actor and director Guillaume Canet. The couple already have a five-year-old son, Marcel. Now Canet has also addressed the rumours, hitting out at the “venal stupidity” of the rumours.

Truman Capote

Capote ashes sold The ashes of writer Truman Capote have sold at auction for nearly $NZ63,150 – 10 times the amount they were expected to fetch. The remains – which are stored in a Japanese carved wooden box – went under the hammer in Los Angeles, 32 years after the author of In Cold Blood died at the age of 59.

The ashes belonged to Capote’s friend Joanne Carson, the former wife of late US talk show host Johnny Carson. Julien’s Auctions said the sale of the item is believed to be the first time human ashes have been sold at auction.

Manga landmarks launched E

ighty-eight places in Japan are going to be designated “animation spots” to encourage tourism – using train stations, school campuses, rural shrines and other fairly everyday places where popular “manga” characters are depicted.

Such landmarks number in the tens of thousands, given the popularity and volume of “manga” comics in Japan. But this is being billed as the official list for any fan’s animation pilgrimage, with the places known as seichi, or sacred spots.

People around the world can vote on the landmarks through a website set up in several languages, including English and Chinese.

“Japanese pop culture has grown to rival American Hollywood,” Tsugihiko Kadokawa, chairman of Kadokawa Corp publisher and film studio, one of the officials behind the effort,

said. “Animation can change the times.”

The project highlights Japan’s recent push to make tourism a valuable boon for a stagnant economy, as dynamic as the export of the long-hailed Toyota cars and Sony video-game machines.

Tourists from abroad have grown, under a “Cool Japan” initiative, reaching 20 million people last year – five years ahead of a goal set by the government, prompting officials to raise its 2020 target to 40 million tourists.

Kadokawa and other officials behind the newly formed Japan Anime Tourism Association said they would compile a travel route of 88 animation spots by December, including where manga and animation works took place, as well as the homes of manga artists and museums dedicated to their works.

into consideration in compiling the list. “Vote for the special spot you want to share with everyone,” the site says. One shoo-in for the list, according to organisers, is Washinomiya Jinja, a picturesque shrine in Saitama prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo, a familiar scene in comics by Kagami Yoshimizu, which later became TV animation series, Lucky Staror Raki Suta.

The shrine is not as grand or famous as others in the country, such as Meiji Shrine in central Tokyo, but it’s still the one to visit for those who love the manga series, which depicts friendship among schoolgirls, all illustrated with the huge eyes and colourful hair characteristic of manga.

The shrine shows up in the opening sequence to the TV show, whose typical episode will feature a heated discussion in cute, cooing voices on the correct way to eat a pastry.

Hopes are high at Washinomiya Jinja to be picked for the honours.

“I’m all for it,” said Teruko Masaki, owner of a restaurant near the shrine, which sells noodles and other products with the manga characters splashed on the packaging.

The pieces of wood on which visitors write their wishes, such as getting accepted at a college or having a healthy baby, are at Washinomiya covered with drawings of the Lucky Star girls.

Other possible animation spots include the Gundam giant robot statue on Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, and the Ghibli Studio of Hayao Miyazaki, the Oscar-winning animator who made Spirited Away.

Manga fans like Lee say manga has proven useful for studying the Japanese language and culture.

Karate show a big hit

JION International Karate Ashburton’s two stage shows proved a resounding success on Saturday and Sunday with more than 250 locals, as well as spectators from Timaru and Christchurch, making the trip to see the performances.

The dojo had originally

planned one show, but with tickets being snapped up quickly, a second was confirmed.

An 80-strong crowd gathered at Tinwald Memorial Hall for the Saturday event, before a packed house of more than 180 arrived for yesterday evening’s show.

The dojo had 65 participants take to the stage in all, with every

member appearing at least twice to demonstrate various aspects of the martial art, ranging from basic techniques to more advanced forms.

Dojo manager Jacqui Windhorst said the turnout was pleasing.

“We would really like to say a big thank you to all the spectators who came along to sup-

port our dojo members, almost 20 making the trip from either Timaru or Christchurch,” she said.

Windhorst also credited the club members for their performances and dedication throughout the shows’ preparation, as well as those that had volunteered their time behind the scenes.

by Chelsea, and this time it was Arsenal humiliating its London rival.

Wenger’s 500th and 1000th games in charge of Arsenal both ended in losses to Chelsea but his fortunes finally changed on the

20th anniversary of his appointment.

Arsenal turned on the style with a 3-0 victory in the Premier League yesterday that exposed Chelsea’s defensive frailties and showcased the north London side’s attacking prowess.

and Mesut Ozil provided the goals in the first half that gave Arsenal its first win over Chelsea in five years.

Ellesmere were crowned Hanan Shield under 14 tournament winners at Allenton Rugby Club yesterday after winning both of their ties.

The tournament featured Mid Canterbury, North Otago, South Canterbury and Ellesmere under 14 teams.

On Saturday, Mid Canterbury fell to a 34-15 loss to South Canterbury while Ellesmere snuck

past North Otago 33-28.

Ellesmere added their second victory yesterday with a convincing 27-7 win over South Canterbury as North Otago downed Mid Canterbury 31-19.

In the weekend’s other age-

group and reserve grade fixtures, Mid Canterbury A and North Otago Development could not be separated in a 20-20 stalemate while Mid Canterbury under 16 took a razor-thin 32-31 win over Canterbury/West Coast.

Taylor out to make an impact in black An intense eating and weights routine has resulted in back-up All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor packing on the power and size.

Taylor, who has played eight tests since making his debut against Argentina in Christchurch last year, weighed 108kg while playing for the Crusaders this season, but has put on four kilograms in order to make more of an impact at the higher level.

With Dane Coles undergoing a big workload with the Hurricanes going all the way in Super Rugby, a campaign which resulted in a painful rib injury, Taylor could be on the brink of a start in either Buenos Aires, where the All Blacks, who have already won the Rugby Championship, play the Pumas next Sunday, or against South Africa a week later in Durban.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has already indicated that he will look to mix things up in terms

of his selections as he mitigates against high workloads and an intense travel schedule, and Taylor could be one of those provided with an opportunity.

“I have been focusing ever since that June series [against Wales] on packing on the size,” Taylor told Radio Sport in Buenos Aires.

“Test footy is a bit more physical and that’s where I’ve got to – I’ve made a good weight to play test footy and now I just need the lungs to catch up.”

Asked what it took to make such gains, Taylor said: “You’re surrounded by the coaches and one of the world’s best trainers, so that always helps.

“And then you’ve got the nutritionist who is always on your case, giving you the old fat pinch, which is good.

“Obviously it takes a lot of weights, a lot of eating and a lot of top ups to keep my fitness up.

“I’m 112kg now. My goal was

“On a good day in Super Rugby I was 108kg.

“Four kilos doesn’t sound like

much but you definitely feel it.”

The extra size and strength allows Taylor to make more of an impact in the scrum and in the contact areas, although he joked that he felt it “mainly in my lungs and in my legs, trying to get around the paddock”.

The 25-year-old has impressed with his composure, pace and skill level since his debut last year, a match in which he scored a try on his home pitch.

He has made only two starts during his test career – against Namibia in the World Cup, and Australia in Sydney in August – but is knocking on the door of another one as he becomes increasingly comfortable in the All Blacks’ set-up.

“It’s a younger environment this year,” he said.

“Last year I was probably a little bit more tense ... but this year I feel more confident in the group and ready to play some good footy.”

Sam Cane didn’t believe the All Blacks coaches had set a realistic goal when they explained they wanted this year’s side to be better than the class of 2015 who had become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups.

Coach Steve Hansen set out his vision to the senior leadership group at the start of the season and, as much as Cane wanted to believe it, admits he had his doubts.

The phrase the coaches used was re-establishment, not rebuilding.

“Better than last year?

“Probably not,” Cane said yesterday.

“As soon as you hear that, that we are not rebuilding, that sparks something.

“When we first assembled, there was real excitement but also a bit of uncertainty around the group knowing we had lost more than 800 test caps, and some of them our greatest All Blacks ever.”

The results have been spectacular.

Not only are the All Blacks on a 15-match winning run, having already sewn up this year’s Rugby Championship with two games remaining, they are also playing a style of rugby no team can live with.

“It seems to be ticking along quite nicely,” Cane said.

A feature of the side has been the impact of relative newcomers such as Ryan Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown and Ardie Savea.

For Cane, the arrival of the younger Savea brother has been significant, especially as he had to deal with the cloak of Richie McCaw for the first four years of his All Blacks career.

Now some fans are clamouring for Savea to start ahead of Cane.

The Chiefs flanker has taken a phlegmatic approach to things but admits it’s a new position to be in.

“I try to look at the Richie side of things by saying I was pretty fortunate in my first four years in the All Blacks to work alongside him. I’m pretty sure in 10 years I will appreciate it even more.

“There hasn’t been too much talk about comparing myself and Richie.

“It’s Ardie and myself.

“It’s the first time in my career that I’m seen as the more established player. I was always the one trying to come up and challenge.

“It’s not more motivating [the fact he is now the hunted]. I’m pretty motivated anyway and it doesn’t matter what team I’m playing for.

“What I tried to do was take that weight off my shoulders and try to enjoy my training week a little more without that added pressure.

“We want to win every game and do it in the most dominant fashion we can. It’s not always achievable but we’ve been able to get most of it right in the last month or so.

“You only have to look back to know it doesn’t last, so I think everyone should just enjoy it.”- NZME

The first five gathered possession deep inside Mid Canterbury territory after the Coasters fumbled what should have been a match-winning try and put the hammer down to run the length of the field.

He had just enough gas to steer clear of fellow No.10 Cumming to register his sixth try in five outings.

The Hammers will now turn their attention to next weekend’s clash with winless East Coast in Ruatoria, where they will hope to produce a more convincing display.

Late tries from Irish prop Mike Lynch and loan first five Jarred Percival got Mid Canterbury out of jail for a 34-22 victory over West Coast in week five of the Heartland Championship at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday.

On a day that the Mid Canterbury faithful hoped the Hammers would send a clear message of their Meads Cup intentions, the home side faltered in a nailbiting affair.

Coast drew first blood through loan second five Erenimo Tau before first five Nik Cumming added the extras.

Mid Canterbury were quick to reply, though, through Percival – who produced another fine individual try.

The 24-year-old set off on an elusive run across the paddock to touch down in the corner unchallenged, but failed to convert, leaving the Hammers down by two.

But it wasn’t long before Tau added his and Coast’s second of the afternoon with an impressive individual try of his own.

Cumming was again on hand to slot his conversion and boost the visitors out to a 16-6 lead.

From then Mid Canterbury began to gather momentum, resulting in wing Christian Vainerere breaching Coast’s defiant defence after a prolonged period of possession.

But Percival failed from the boot again and West Coast headed to the sheds with a 16-12 lead.

Canterbury gave Otago a solid reality check in Christchurch on Saturday.

Stung last weekend in a major upset at the hands of the Turbos in Palmerston North, the Cantabs regained the Premiership lead in the Mitre 10 Cup, retained the Payne Trophy, and inflicted Otago’s first defeat of the season in the Championship.

They monopolised early possession and most of the class on show, while the visitors were working overtime to hang on via the boot of No 10 Fletcher Smith.

Otago also missed too many first-up tackles.

Class, slick organisation and execution oozed from Canterbury.

Even prop Alex Hodgman, who scored the opening try, showed off a reverse pass.

In the backs, first five Richie Mo’unga ran the cutter beautifully, his nice touches highlighted by a perfectly weighted grubber for wing Johnny McNicholl to score.

The latter showed why he will be such a big loss to Canterbury and New Zealand rugby with a superb allround display.

He set up second five Rob Thompson for a try.

In the pack, captain Luke Whitelock led the way in his 50th game for the union, and he took delight in setting up lock David McDuling for a popular try.

Canterbury will be happy left wing Nathan Earle is still with them.

There was some conjecture that the Englishman would be called back by UK club Saracens after Chris Ashton was rubbed out for 13 weeks for biting.

For now, Earle continues his rugby education in Christchurch, and he was the beneficiary from a sweet McNicholl offload.

Fullback Jordie Barrett showcased his quality too.

Flanker Billy Harmon galloped away, swatting off would-be defenders, for a long-range try.

After emptying the bench, Canterbury lost some shape, which may have spared Otago blushes.

They did, however, secure a bonus point in the final minute.

Otago had little to show overall, save for two brilliant Matt Faddes’ offloads, which sent former New Zealand Under 20s wing Fa’asiu Fuatai in for their first try and then captain and No 8 Paul Grant for their third.

They did stiffen their defence as the clock wound down and indeed won the second spell.

Canterbury will be focused on recovery in the next few days as they eye up a Wednesday evening Ranfurly Shield challenge against Waikato in Hamilton.

The Mooloos will be on high alert.

College puts on fighting comeback against NSW

Ashburton College’s 1st XI hockey team played host to a New South Wales invitation high school XI on Saturday.

The touring NSW team got off to a fine start to lead 5-1 at halftime, but College battled back in the second stanza to lessen the deficit to 8-5 at fulltime.

nett said the skill level of both teams was pleasing.

“I think it was a great game, I was impressed with the skill from both teams,” he said.

The NSW players, who tour

New Zealand annually, alternating between the North and South Islands, will return to Ashburton on Friday for a second clash at 4pm at the Ashburton hockey turf.

Storm, Sharks in the final Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith says it’s nothing new for the Storm to go into an NRL grand final with the crowd against them.

In next Sunday’s title decider, the Storm will face Cronulla, who are set to have the majority of the support at ANZ Stadium on their side.

Playing in his fifth grand final in Sydney, Smith said his team were used to being the enemy.

“I don’t think we’ve played a final in Sydney when anyone’s been going for us,” Smith said.

“That’s sport and that’s part of the game and we’ve done it all year.

“We’ve played 13 games away this year and we haven’t had too many people there supporting us but I’m sure we’ll have some purple in the crowd.

“At the end of the day, the crowd isn’t going to have an influence on the game, for us it’s there to be won and we can control what we do.”

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy watched the Sharks roll North Queensland 32-20 to win through to the grand final, taking note of

playmaker James Maloney, who scored two tries and kicked six from seven goals.

But Bellamy said he wouldn’t take too much from the Sharks’ performance against the Cowboys, preferring to concentrate on their own meeting in round 26 when the Storm beat Cronulla to win the minor premiership.

“We played them only a couple of weeks ago, so we will probably go back to what we saw there, and our games before that, as far as what we’re going to go with for a game plan,” Bellamy said.

“You know they’ve got real quality halves – Jim Maloney was outstanding – and they’ve got a tough pack of forwards and some really quick, strong outside backs, so they’ve got a really good balance.”

Meanwhile Raiders coach Ricky Stuart remains upbeat after their narrow loss to the Storm on Saturday.

“This is only the beginning,” he bellowed those words just minutes after Canberra’s NRL revival came to a heartbreaking halt in Melbourne.

The Raiders pushed the Storm all the way in their preliminary final at AAMI Park, leading early before ultimately falling two points short of a dream grand final appearance.

The 14-12 defeat ended a fairytale season for the Green Machine, who came to life in 2016 on the back of an enthralling attacking style.

Stuart cut a dejected figure after the game but was proud of his team’s efforts in a season in which few predicted they would finish so close to a decider.

“We sit here after every game win, lose or draw and talk about how much effort we put in for one another and it was no different this time.

“It’s just a bitter pill to swallow this time,” he said.

The third-year Raiders coach admitted even he was surprised by his team’s success after they finished second at the end of the regular season and claimed two finals scalps.

“I’d be lying if I said I expected this,” he said.

“If anybody said they’d expect-

ed us to be No.2 in the competition and be playing in a prelim, you’d think they were dancing with the fairies.”

Stuart said their fortunes changed after a breakthrough victory against the Warriors in New Plymouth.

From there, his team won 13 of their next 14 games to surge into the finals.

The mid-season acquisitions of Joseph Tapine and Junior Paulo helped, while the emergence of Jordan Rapana, Josh Hodgson and Joey Leilua was the source of many of their points.

Stuart said their finals heartache would be the making of their team.

“Our hurt now is the start of a really, really competitive era for the Canberra Raiders,” he said.

“This loss will help us achieve success in the near future.

“The way we play the game has given rugby league another injection of energy and enthusiasm purely through our players.

“We’re not going away empty handed. We’ll get something out of this.”

The Black Caps fell one LBW short of the most in a test innings when they were bowled out for 262 in their first innings of the opening test in Kanpur. Some of the dismisals were certainly debatable, mainly those of Luke Ronchi and Ish Sodhi, as New Zealand lost their last five wickets for seven runs. At lunch on day four yesterday India were 252 for 4.

New partnership runs hot The newly formed training partnership of Bruce Wallace and Alan Peard continued their strong start to the current season with a winning double at Ellerslie on the weekend.

Victories by last season’s Dunstan Feeds Championship winner Cheeky Boy and promising four-year-old Ronchi lifted the new combination’s winning tally to three with Peard confident the team has plenty more in store as the tracks start to firm up.

“We’ve been really pleased with how things have started off as, even though we’ve only had twelve starters to date, they have all performed with credit,” noted Peard.

“We were confident with both of our runners on Saturday as Cheeky Boy had gone a beauty first up at Ruakaka while Ronchi had trialled nicely at Waipa where he won under a hard hold.”

Peard, who has stepped up to his co-trainer role with Wallace after many seasons as stable foreman, did admit the heavy track conditions had created some doubt in his mind about the chances of Ronchi prior to his race.

“He was a handy type during his three-year-old campaign where he twice finished fourth in stakes company but he is a different horse now having really muscled up during his break,” he said. “He does go well fresh but I had my doubts with all the rain falling as he hasn’t really handled that type of heavy going in the past.

Promising three-year-old filly Veearma lived up to her unbeaten trial form with a winning debut at Ellerslie on Saturday, with the performance stamping her as a filly going places in a hurry. Confidently expected to be prominent in her first race day start after winning her only two trials as a two-year old, the Darci Brahma filly gave her army of supporters little cause for concern as she powered to a comprehensive one and a quarter length victory over the 1100 metre journey, carrying the colours of breeders Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan.

“There’s nothing malicious about him and it might be he is just having a game with the attendants. Whatever it is I will be relieved to see him get rid of the habit sooner rather than later.”

Peard was also delighted with the win of Cheeky Boy, who he believes can be a summer cups

contender this season.

“He is a very nice stayer and showed that with his win in the Dunstan,” he said.

“At this stage he will probably go to Rotorua on the 15th and then come back to Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Day for the 2000 metre weight-for-age event.

“His main target will be the Counties Cup later in November so we’re looking forward to getting him ready for that.” - NZME

Wiggins denies drug allegations Bradley Wiggins has denied he was trying to gain an unfair advantage when he obtained permission to use a banned drug before some of his biggest races, including his victory in the 2012 Tour de France.

The British cycling great has faced widespread criticism ever since it emerged he was given injections of the powerful anti-inflammatory drug triamcinolone shortly before the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Tour de France and the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

This was revealed last week when a Russian-based group of computer hackers known as the Fancy Bears published private medical data belonging to some of the world’s leading athletes that they stole from the World Anti-Doping Agency.

In a pre-recorded interview with BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show that was broadcast overnight, the 36-year-old rider said: “(The triamcinolone) was prescribed for allergies and respiratory problems.

“I’ve been a life-long sufferer of asthma and I went to my team doctor at the time and we went, in turn, to a specialist to see if there’s anything else we could do to cure these problems.

“And he said ‘yeah, there’s something you can do but you’re going to need authorisation from cycling’s governing body’.

“You have to show and provide evidence from a specialist that they will then scrutinise with three independent doctors and authorise you to take this product.

“If one of those three doctors says no, you get declined.

“This was to cure a medical condition.

“This wasn’t about trying to find a way to gain an unfair advantage.

“This was about putting myself back on a level playingfield in order to compete at the highest level.”

The authorisation Wiggins refers to is known as a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), which is effectively a doctor’s note allowing an athlete to use a substance that would normally be prohibited under WADA’s rules because of its performance-enhancing qualities.

After last week’s Fancy Bears leak, it is now known that Wiggins has received six TUEs during his career: three for asthma inhalers between 2008 and 2009, and the three injections between 2011 and 2013.

The five-time Olympic champion still uses an inhaler but no longer needs a TUE to cover that as WADA relaxed the rules for the most common asthma drugs in 2010.

But triamcinolone, a corticosteroid, remains banned as it can aid recovery from strenuous activity, postpone fatigue and help with weight loss.

However, there is no suggestion that either Wiggins or Team Sky, his former team, have broken any rules, and his TUEs were approved by the British authorities and cycling’s world governing body the UCI. Team Sky responded to the publication of Wiggins’ TUEs by saying it had followed the rules to the letter and restating its commitment to clean sport. British Cycling has said it is “proud of its strong antidoping culture”.

But that has not stopped several current and former riders from criticising Wiggins and Team Sky for seeking permission to use the drug on the eve of his main target in each of those seasons, and expressing surprise that the authorities allowed them to do so.

Title fight in jeopardy The ongoing injury issues of Tyson Fury could impact the timing of New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker’s title fight against Anthony Joshua.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has said Joshua is ready and willing to take on Wladimir Klitschko on November 26 if Fury is stripped of his title belts.

That had started to firm as the most likely date for Parker to take on Joshua in London for the IBF world heavyweight title.

To challenge for Joshua’s title, first Parker must beat Alexander Dimitrenko in Manukau on Saturday.

Last week Hearn said that Parker was lining up as the favourite to fight Joshua.

“At the moment I think the favourite to fight Anthony Joshua is Joseph Parker,” Hearn said.

“There are a few things that have to get done, but it’s a great fight and why not do it now?”

Parker’s promoter Dean Lonergan said yesterday: “There’s been no deal signed or done in terms of whether we fight [David] Price on November 26 or Anthony Joshua, assuming we get past Dimitrenko.

“As it has been for the last month and a half, discussions are ongoing and a certain path is preferred, but if they can’t tie an opponent down we’ll make Joseph ready to go.”

But hopes of a title fight for Parker looked to have have changed overnight with Hearn having ‘reached out’ to Klitschko’s camp, after the Ukrainian once again saw his world heavyweight title rematch with Fury postponed.

The Klitschko v Fury rematch was due to take place on October 29, but was called off on Saturday after the Fury was deemed ‘medically unfit’ to fight, with reports suggesting the withdrawal is due to mental health issues.

Joshua, who holds the IBF heavyweight title stripped from Fury last year, is scheduled to defend his belt on November 26 but has yet to have an opponent confirmed.

But Hearn is keen for his man to face Klitschko, and took to Twitter to reveal he has ‘reached out’ to the Ukrainian’s camp in a bid to make the fight happen.

In reply to a suggestion from boxing writer Dan Rafael, Hearn wrote “Reached out to @Klitschko team - we love the fight!”

For Parker, if he re-claims the mandatory challenger sta-

tus with a win over Dimitrenko then he could potentially face the winner of a Joshua-Klitschko fight.

Hearn told Sky Sports News: “From our side, if Wladimir Klitschko against Anthony Joshua can be made for the WBA and the IBF belts, for November 26, we are taking that fight, no question.

“But, as always in boxing it’s a very complicated process, there’s so much that needs to happen and I don’t feel like they’ll strip Tyson Fury just yet.

“I hope they don’t, because we want the winner of that fight, Fury against Klitschko.

The bout could be a solution for a frustrated Klitschko, with manager Bernd Boente claiming his fighter is “being held hostage” by Fury.
