‘Plan would send us back to 1970s’

Mid Canterbury farmers are still asking for the Government to provide an economic assessment of the impact of proposed new freshwater rules on the district.

They say the current proposal would

see Mid Canterbury return to a 1970s economy, with a few dairy farmers along the coast, dryland sheep farming on the plains and trees grown in the foothills.

Water group worries about future

Ashburton Water Zone committee members voiced more concern on Tuesday about being sidelined from important discussions around water, to a point the group might go into recess or lose the respect of its community.

Conservation lobby group Forest and Bird went to the High Court this year to ask the Auditor General to withdraw exemptions for zone committee members so they could not take part in debate or decisions in which they had a pecuniary advantage.

The exemptions were similar to those that apply to Members of Parliament, who can take part in discussions and decisions as long as they declare any conflict of interests. The removal of exemptions means zone committee members are now treated like elected members of the Ashburton District Council and other local authorities.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee voiced its disappointment at the new situation again yesterday, saying it would lose part

of the special knowledge needed for informed debate.

The committee had written to Environment Canterbury and the Ashburton District Council, asking them to petition the Auditor General to consider reinstating the exemptions, “to ensure the whole community has a voice in implementing plans to improve the environment we all live in”.

“The committee has grave concerns that the withdrawal of the OAG declaration will make zone committees unworkable, lose the respect of their communities and go into recess, leaving Environment Canterbury and the district councils with the very difficult task of implementing the Canterbury Water Management Strategy without community support.”

There are 10 water zone committees in Canterbury, charged with implementing the goals of the strategy; they have been running for a decade and are a mix of community members.

The Ashburton committee has been told there is no merit applying for new exemptions, because they would almost certainly

be unsuccessful.

Chairman Bill Thomas believes it is a backward step. It would stop him taking part in discussions around the Hinds drains project or sharing his knowledge about the drains, because he farms in the area affected.

He said it also stopped other members from contributing, including members who were farmers, commercial environmental managers and communications consultants, as they all made the living in the areas of their expert knowledge.

Forest and Bird had previously written to the committee, saying they would be reviewing minutes of the meetings to ensure members were compliant and that those who were not risked prosecution.

The Ashburton members said the withdrawal of exemptions would impact on its work going forward. A compromise could have been to allow members with a conflict of interest to take part in discussions, sharing the benefit of their knowledge, but not to vote in decisions.

‘Plan would send us back to the ’70s’ From P1 He said while Government’s action plan contained costs for farmers, like fencing and auditing of farm environment plans, it did not detail how some rural districts would be affected if farming needed to become less intensive to meet the newly proposed rules.

“Everyone who lives in Mid Canterbury and is involved with the district’s economy needs to understand what the impact will be.

“The plan, as proposed, will not work and people need to understand the effect these proposals will have on the economic and social fabric in the district. People need to think about what it was like in the 1970s, how many people lived here, income levels and job prospects.”

Clark said Mid Canterbury would have a similar fate as Selwyn Te Waihora, which was the subject of an ECan report two years ago, detailing what would need to happen in order to achieve a similar environmental target.

The report is a footnote reference in the Essential Freshwater plan that is out for consultation until October 31.

The report says widespread loss of equity and change in land ownership is likely, and rural communities would experience loss of services and depopulation.

“The land use change analysis projects a very substantial change in land use in the catchment, with virtually no intensive land uses and the catchment dominated by dryland sheep and beef grazing and by forestry or other extensive

land uses. This is expected to result in a reduction in operating surplus returns from the catchment in excess of 80 per cent from $348 million to $45 million per annum.”

Clark said Government needed to do an assessment for Mid Canterbury, so the community could be informed and properly provide feedback on the current proposed plan.

He said farmers were already engaged and committed to meeting the tough rules of the Canterbury Land and Water Plan.

“The real concern is these proposals appear to pull the mat out from under our feet and take a set of really tough targets that we can work towards and achieve, and replace it with targets we have no hope of meeting without

dramatic change.

“Everyone in Mid Canterbury needs to understand what that impact looks like.”

Clark said Government needed to return to the district with economic modelling about how a water quality bottom line of 1mg dissolved inorganic nitrogen per litre would impact the lives of people who lived here.

“It is incumbent on the Government to be upfront without community and give us sound economic data of what a DIN of 1 will mean for our community. At the moment all we can look at is the Selwyn Waihora model and it would be economically devastating there.”

Clark said anxiety in the farming community was not being drummed up by farmers who

were misrepresenting the impact of the action plan.

“We are simply reading what is written in the Government proposal document, ” he said.

He said the anger and fear generated by the plan had only ensured lobby groups had retreated to their corners instead of working collaboratively.

“It’s a tough ask to expect farmers to achieve a nitrogen limit of 1mg/l when some farmers have water flowing into their farms from the DOC estate with a nitrogen load of 3mg/l.”

Environment Minister David Parker said, when he visited the district on Friday, that he wanted farmers, and others, to make submissions on the plan that would help inform its final shape and targets.

Ponds focus of homicide investigation

Specialist police divers have spent the day working in ponds of water and effluent as they continue to search for evidence in relation to the homicide of 29-year-old Rakaia man Tony Grant Waldron.

“The police dive squad are searching bodies of water on a property on Gardiners Road as part of the ongoing investigation,” detective senior sergeant Richard Quested said.

“This includes searching an irrigation pond and an effluent pond.

“A specialist search team continues to search the farm land as a part of the ongoing investigation.”

Police staff could be seen at a Gardiners Road address yesterday, alongside an appliance from the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade and a truck that appeared to be spreading effluent on to nearby paddocks.

Chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said they were on standby for decontamination if needed.

Quested said police are determined to find those responsible for this crime.

Waldron was found in his bed by a colleague on Wednesday morning last week with fatal injuries at around 9am.

Initial reports suggested he had suffered a gunshot wound, but police later confirmed that was not the case, but have not been able to confirm how Waldron suffered his injuries.

Quested said they still believe there is no threat to the public and that this was an isolated incident, and that it was not a random attack.

One man has been arrested in the process of the investigation, but Quested said the charges were not related to Waldron’s death.

A man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Friday morning charged with threatening to kill, possession of ammunition and having possession of a drug utensil relating to cannabis use.

He was granted interim name suppression and was remanded in custody to reappear at the Ashburton District Court on October 14.

Rakaia gets its chance to grill mayoral hopefuls

The four candidates seeking Ashburton’s top job as mayor had an opportunity to win votes at a meeting in Rakaia on Tuesday night.

Neil Brown, Tony Todd, Donna Favel and Leen Braam were in the spotlight, along with the four candidates vying for two seats as Eastern Ward councillors – Mark Malcolm, Stuart Wilson, Philip Rushton and Lynette Lovett.

At the Rakaia Residents’ Association meeting, mayoral candidates were given a list questions ahead of the meeting and it was

clear the four had put plenty of thought into their answers, association chair Neil Pluck said.

They were asked to look ahead, both short and long term, and to give their opinions on the important issues, but if those at the meeting were hoping for original ideas, they were disappointed, Pluck said.

Water, farming and the revitalisation of Ashburton’s central business area were uppermost in all mayoral candidates’ minds.

“They were talking the bigger picture and how we needed to watch this space with farming because of the pressure that’s

building there and they all talked a lot about infrastructure, but there was no ground-breaking stuff,” he said.

Finding a solution for a safe pedestrian crossing of State Highway 1 in Rakaia was a hot topic for the four and opinions ranged from an underpass, to pedestrian-controlled traffic lights.

“No one was brave enough to really stamp their foot and say ‘on my watch this will happen’,” Pluck said.

terest rates, and taking on more inter-generational debt so large infrastructure projects could be undertaken.

Two candidates, Brown and Favel, suggested this was not in the district’s best interests because interest rates were not fixed and that meant the cost of those borrowings could rise significantly in the future.

Braam said he did not like borrowing money while Todd agreed there was a need to be careful with borrowings but that there were projects such as the relocation of the town centre rail head that should be funded so

they would happen.

Candidates for the Eastern Ward were quizzed on pot holes, roading and on whether they thought Rakaia should have another liquor store. The answer to that one was universally ‘no’, Pluck said.

Voting is now open for this year’s local body elections. Ballot papers were posted late last week and voting closes at noon on October 12.

Registered voters who have not received their ballot papers should contact the electoral officer at the Ashburton District Council.

Riding for Disabled celebrates 45 years The Mid Canterbury group of Riding for the Disabled has reached 45 years, and will celebrate with an open day on Saturday.

Mare One (pictured) is among the group’s seven horses who will be there on the day, and among those looking forward to the event are (from front) Netherby School pupils Haiven Waititi, 10, Hapina Wikohika, 10, Casey Rogers, 9, and Ben Tangatakino, 11.

Senior coach Maxine Hooper said about 37 children, aged from two to 12, were currently among riders at the group, which had tutored up to 3000 riders over the years.

“It’s a real achievement in the community,” Hooper said of reaching the anniversary.

Thanks to its funders, the group owned its property and facilities on Leeston Street. The open day, from 1pm to 3pm, will feature children riding as well as demonstrations including in side saddle.

A revamped Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust has hit the ground running as farmer stress levels around the district rise.

Mycoplasma bovis, new Government policies around freshwater and greenhouse gas emissions and high debt are adding to everyday farm and life pressures.

The Rural Support Trust has reshaped its organisation, retaining a traditional response and recovery group commonly used in short-term adverse events like snow storms, and adding a welfare committee with people dedicated to community wellbeing and M. bovis.

Long-time trust chairman Peter Reveley said banking, and other professional people dealing with farming people, had also been briefed on the current pressures.

The trust receives regular calls from people needing help and advice.

Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a fire at a property at around 9.30pm on Tuesday evening.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said there had been a water leak which resulted in water getting in to a light fitting. “Obviously electricity and water don’t mix so that is how that started,” he said. Burgess said once they were done it was in the hands of the electrician and plumber to fix.

Four days after voting in this year’s local body elections opened, 3.8 per cent of the 21,665 ballot papers for the Ashburton District have been returned. The Western Ward has the highest return rate at 242 or 6.02 per cent, followed by the Eastern Ward, 197 or 5.79 per cent and then the Ashburton Ward, 407 or 2.97 per cent.

“We are hearing stress levels are increasing on farm and we are quite worried about that. The policies that are coming out from central government have escalated that problem and there is a backdrop of high debt. It is sobering.”

Reveley said some farmers had put the clamps on spending because of the uncertainty and that had already translated to job losses in the Ashburton district.

Announcing the results of the trust’s internal review this week, Reveley said the response and recovery committee had a team of fit young people it could call on, while the welfare committee also had wide experience and included active farmers. There was also the experience of older farmers, who had been through farming’s crisis in the 1980s when subsidies were removed.

Two new faces have come on board and Cole Groves and Josh

Dondertman will join Reveley, Allan Baird, Alasdair Urquhart, Don Geddes, Marg Verrall and Sue Baird as trustees. The newcomers have both survived M. bovis scares on their dairy farms and want to help others.

The trust has taken on Megan Parsons as administrator for both committees. Allan Baird will co-ordinate the response and recovery team, while Pup Chamberlain and Judy Skevington will lead the welfare team.

Frances Beeston has been helping farmers affected by the M. bovis eradication programme.

Farmers whose status escalates from active surveillance can opt in if they want Rural Support Trust help. She shares the work with Sophie Shearer and Marie McAnulty.

Beeston said the M. bovis situation seemed to be improving with fewer notifications in the district this spring.

She said it was a stressful process for farms confirmed with the cattle disease who then

needed to depopulate and claim compensation.

Life in the trenches was tough for these farmers.

She said the RST team knew the eradication programme process and could connect farmers with the services they need.

A Federated Farmers farmer assistance programme, being piloted for three months in Mid Canterbury, provides advice and support to the large group of farmers in the active surveillance stage.

A mayoral advisory group set up to address regional issues meets monthly.

The welfare committee has already organised a 50 Plus Connection showcase on October 16, aimed at showing people who may be living in isolated situations, what sort of sports, clubs and interest groups are in their area.

Committee members will also attend a mental health workshop next month, to grow their skills at starting conversations with people about how they are coping.

The Education Minister has called for a “thorough investigation” after the body of a student lay unnoticed in university accommodation for nearly two months. The body of a male student was discovered at the University of Canterbury’s Sonoda Christchurch Campus accommodation on Monday evening. Specialist police officers, including the disaster victim identification team, have been called in to help with the formal identification of the body, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnson said. The process is ongoing. Education Minister Chris Hipkins has voiced concerns over the amount of time it took to find the young man.

Vegan protesters Vegan protesters formed a human barricade in front of the Hamilton Countdown’s meat section over the weekend. The group wore black and taped their mouths shut as part of a silent protest. Footage captured shows supermarket staff asking the group to leave or police will be called. Some shoppers were captured ignoring the protesters as the customers picked up meat from the meat section. The protesters were then seen marching through Westfield mall after they were forced from Countdown.

Student hui a huge success

By Juliet Campbell On Thursday September 19, the Opuke Kahui Ako (Community of Learning) held a student hui at the Rakaia Community Hall.

There were around 70 students attending this hui from the nine schools in our Kahui. The students were put into 10 groups, with a mixture of students from different schools and ages.

Students were involved in lots of different fun activities, sharing their voices and opinions on what they want to see happen at school and within our Kahui Ako. The focus at this hui was on self-regulation.

We have had three previous hui over the past two years, but this hui was student-led.

Representatives from each school met a few weeks ago and discussed what they wanted to see at the hui, students were in charge of organising and leading all the activities.

Students were all in mixed groups, where they were with around five to six other students from different schools.

Everyone got to meet other students and form friendships, it was great to see throughout the day the confidence that everyone gained, with a lot

of people breaking out of their comfort zone.

There were loads of fun activities throughout the day including jump jam, origami, fun icebreakers, quizzes, and a no hands cup stacking team contest.

As well as a goal-setting time at the beginning of the day, and reflection time at the end, some time was spent discussing the day’s focus of self regulation and self directed learning – students got to voice their own opinion and thoughts.

There was a fun activity that involved sport bands and dodge balls reflecting on our hauora (mental/ emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing) and how we need every part of our wellbeing to be functioning for them all to work in harmony.

The first student hui was held at Lauriston School in June 2018, with around 40 people attending, and we have the majority of those students still attending these huis today.

Everybody is enjoying that they get the opportunity to carry their ideas and thoughts throughout the different huis, with different questions and topics being raised.

To this hui we have added the aspect that everyone got to bring a friend from their school, this boosted confidence throughout the day and bought a new group of opinions and ideas to the table.

The response from the students has been all positive – getting to meet new people, sharing their voice and being heard.

All of the students’ ideas get taken back to their school to see what the students want to see change.

These huis would not go ahead without Miss Jenna Chenery, Mrs Rana Staples, Mrs Wendy Atkinson (within school teachers) and Mrs Rosie Robinson (across school teacher) for all were there help run and organise previous huis and helped support the students leading this hui.

Our Opuke Kahui Ako is leading the way with other Kahui Akos adopting this idea of running student huis, where students get to give their ideas and be heard.

We, as students, appreciate the opportunity to be involved in our Kahui Ako – Community of Learning.

Kai & Kutz kicks off in style

Ashburton’s own Pacific Island food and barber shop got off to a flying start at their official launch on Saturday, selling out of food twice.

Owner Mahu Maireriki said the opening of the store on Tancred Street was a success.

“It was a good day, we had good weather and plenty of people came through and we sold out of food twice, I had to go do some shopping in between and we didn’t end up closing till 9pm,” he said.

“We are opening from Tuesday to Sunday but I opened it up yesterday (Monday) for Boulevard Day and plenty of people came through.”

The store is split over two levels, with ready-to-eat food, like roast pork, cassava and taro, being cooked fresh behind the counter.

Alongside that will be a Pacific Island merchandise display, selling items such as sarongs, ukuleles and traditional mats.

“Then there are drinks, so your usual bottled drinks like water and Koko Samoa, which is a Samoan chocolate drink that we had to import specially.”

Maireriki, who is a builder by trade but will be in charge of the

cooking, had always wanted to run a shop, but was never confident enough to launch one based on one concept.

“I had always wanted to do a shop, but you can be struggling if you are only doing one thing which is why we have all this going on,” he said.

Police arrest 13 for money laundering Police have arrested 13 people for money laundering and are actively searching for more people involved, as investigations continue into an ongoing sophisticated phone scam that has seen New Zealanders lose millions of dollars.

Earlier this year the Auckland City Fraud Unit launched Operation Deadwood, after receiving reports of people who had lost tens of thousands of dollars to phone scammers, who convinced victims to hand over money after claiming to be from Spark and/or the police.

Over the past few months, police have received more than a hundred reports from people across New Zealand who have lost money totalling more than $2.5 million.

likely to be the tip of the iceberg with police believing the actual number of victims to be several hundred.

“We know there are victims that are either too embarrassed to report their losses or have directly contacted their banks rather than contact police, so we don’t know the exact scale of this offending,” he said.

“The victims in these cases have often lost tens of thousands of dollars, with one victim losing around a quarter of a million dollars to the scammers.

“In many of these cases, the victims are told to download software from a website which has then given the scammers access to the victim’s computer, where they have transferred funds out of the individual’s bank accounts.”

Since July, police have arrested

12 men and one woman, aged between 21 and 33, for money laundering and their cases are currently being heard in court.

Blackman said the arrests have taken place in Auckland, Hamilton and Napier.

“I want to reassure the community that police treat these scams seriously,” he said.

“We know there are more offenders out there targeting victims and we will do everything we can to identify them and hold them to account.”

Blackman said police are concerned that despite public warnings, they are still continuing to receive reports of people falling victims to this scam.

“We really need the community to help us spread the message to their friends and family, particularly the more vulnerable, elderly members of our commu-

nity, to make sure they are also aware of this scam,” he said.

“The victims are always rung on their landlines at home. This is an important reminder to never give your personal details over the phone to a stranger.

“A legitimate business or a member of the NZ Police will never ask for your bank details over the phone or ask you to transfer money.

“If you think a call may be suspicious, hang up immediately.

“If you have concerns about a call, ring the company back on their publicly listed number, not the number they have called you on, and alert them to the call you have just received.”

Police encourage anyone who has lost money as a result of this scam to report it to their local police station if they are yet to do so.

Ashburton Trust Event Centre manager Roger Farr, in his six monthly report to funder the Ashburton District Council, said that, with the building having passed its 10th birthday, the number of maintenance items needing attention was continuing to grow.

A number of items that would need addressing in the coming months or years had been identified, but the building had received a current warrant of fitness, he said.

One of the biggest issues came from the increased use of lighting, sound and audio visual cables that needed to be run across walkways.

This was occurring because budget restraints at the time of construction meant there was a lack of networking systems.

Upgraded technical equipment and advances in technology meant the need for networking capabilities had increased allowing for a simpler plug-andgo concept, Farr said.

An action plan was being developed that looked at a timeframe for this work and funding options for upgrades, he said.

Venue hires had remained strong over the past 12 months and in the year to June 30 the auditorium was used on 158 days, the Bradford Room on 171 days, the Green Room on 37 and the foyer on 61 days.

Community events continued to be the biggest user of the auditorium with 69 held during the year and conferences and meetings have increased significantly, boosting bookings in the Bradford Room.

Parliament suspension deemed illegal by courts AP In a decision that badly undermines Boris Johnson’s authority, Britain’s highest court ruled unanimously that the prime minister broke the law by suspending Parliament in a way that squelched legitimate scrutiny of his Brexit plan.

The historic move by the UK Supreme Court offered a ringing endorsement of Parliament’s sovereignty and slapped down what justices viewed as the legislature’s silencing by the executive.

The ruling upended the prime minister’s plan to keep lawmakers away until two weeks before Britain is due to leave the European Union. The Supreme Court said Johnson’s suspension was “void” and never legally took effect, opening the door for Parliament to resume its duties Wednesday morning as if nothing had happened.

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow welcomed the decision, saying citizens were “entitled” to have Parliament in session to review the government and enact laws.

The ruling also established that Johnson had involved Queen Elizabeth II by giving her improper advice when he sought her permission to shutter Parliament for five weeks.

The justices made clear they were not criticising Elizabeth, who as a constitutional monarch was required to approve the prime minister’s request.

The British government said Johnson spoke to the queen after the ruling, but did not disclose details of the conversation.

Johnson said he objected to court’s decision but would comply.

“It is impossible for us to conclude, on the evidence which has been put before us, that there was any reason – let alone a good reason – to advise her majesty to prorogue Parliament for five weeks,” she said.

“We cannot speculate, in the absence of further evidence, upon what such reasons might have been. It follows that the decision was unlawful.”

The suspension “had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification,” Hale said.

The ruling forced a chastened Johnson to cut short his trip to New York to fly home overnight in time for Parliament’s unexpected session, where he will undoubtedly face a crescendo of calls to resign after his judicial humiliation.

The demands started on the courthouse steps moments after the verdict came

in when Scottish National Party lawmaker Joanna Cherry, one of the legislators who had brought the legal challenge, said he must step down immediately.

“His position is untenable, and he should have the guts for once to do the decent thing and resign,” she said.

The prime minister remains on a collision course with Parliament over his determination to sever Britain from the European Union on Oct. 31 even if no divorce deal is reached.

Parliament has passed a law requiring him to seek an extension if there is no deal, but Johnson says he will not do that under any circumstances.

He may be tempted to defy Parliament, but the Supreme Court ruling on the suspension suggests the courts will not look kindly on such a tactic.

Labour Party legislator Jon Trickett said the opposition will seek to have Johnson appear Wednesday in Parliament to explain his actions.

“I suspect we will be sum-

moning the prime minister to Parliament to make a statement,” he said. “We want to hear what legal advice he was acting on, why he ended up in court and being ruled in this quite extraordinary way.”

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and other opposition leaders from a wide array of parties called for Johnson to step down.

Johnson strode to power in late July after easily winning a Conservative Party leadership race to succeed Theresa May. He boldly promised Britain would leave the European Union by the October 31 deadline and dominated the news in his first weeks at 10 Downing Street while Parliament was on its summer break.

Since then, however, he has suffered a remarkable string of defeats.

He lost six consecutive important votes in Parliament, saw his working majority in Parliament evaporate, had his own brother step down from a government post in protest and even failed to get the legislature to back his call for a national election.

Now his suspension of Parliament has been nullified, and feisty lawmakers may use the sessions to look for new ways to make sure Britain does not leave the EU without a deal in place.

It is also possible, although no one in the public will ever know, that the queen – who has been holding weekly private meetings with prime ministers since the days of Winston Churchill – will have questions about Johnson’s advice and requests.

Nonetheless, Johnson plans to press on with his Brexit strategy. He reiterated that Brexit will happen October 31 and said he is focused on reaching a new deal with the EU before then.

Grateful Dead lyricist dies Robert Hunter, the man behind the poetic and mystical words for many of the Grateful Dead’s finest songs, has died at age 78. Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart says Hunter died at his Northern California home on Monday. Although proficient on a number of instruments including guitar, violin, cello and trumpet, Hunter never appeared on stage with the Grateful Dead. Instead he was content to stay in the background and let his written words speak for him during the band’s 30year run that ended with the 1995 death of guitarist Jerry Garcia.

Don’t just tick boxes, vote with your head I

f you call the Ashburton District home, then you have an amazing opportunity, one that’s likely to be sitting in an envelope on your bench.

That envelope is orange and white in colour and it contains information that will allow you to shape the quality of life in this district for the next three years.

Its contents are voting papers for this year’s local body elections listing the candidates who’re keen to give running this district a go.

Every election, around half of us toss those voting papers in the rubbish bin. And then we sit back and complain about the people who’re elected. They don’t do what you want, they make decisions you don’t like and generally

they’re not up to the job.

If you don’t vote, don’t complain, but if you want to be part of the change, to make a difference, to have your say and earn the right to complain if decisions are made that you don’t like – take a few minutes to vote.

There’s a lot more to voting, however, than just ticking the required number of boxes. It’s important to think about who you’re

voting for and why. Don’t vote just because you know someone’s name, because you like their photo, because they’re already on the council or licensing trust.

Vote for them because you’ve taken the time to learn what they stand for, to know they won’t just go with the crowd, that they’ll stand up for what they believe in and be prepared to question and challenge.

And don’t let anyone tell you that you must vote for the required number of people for any issue.

As an informed and thoughtful voter you should only vote for the people you believe will do the best possible job for this district.

If you toss a few random votes

in just to make up the numbers, you’ve just cast votes against the people you really want; you’ve lessened their chances, narrowed the gap between the best and the rest.

We all get one vote for mayor. It’s simple, the person with the most votes wins, but when it comes to district councillors, it’s not outside the bounds of possibility that a person who will become a passenger or a noncontributor around the council table could end up with a high number of votes, simply because people wanted to fill the right number of boxes on their ballot papers.

Voters in the urban ward have five opportunities to tick boxes

and those in the eastern and western wards, two. If you don’t honestly believe there are enough candidates in any of those wards who’ll do the job you want, then don’t vote for them.

Better to cast honest, considered votes than to simply tick the required number of boxes.

Remember, your vote is still valid whether you tick one box, or the required number. Just don’t tick too many.

When the votes are counted, as a district we rise or fall by the quality of the people we elect.

We’ll get what we deserve and if we get it wrong, it can’t be fixed for three years. And three years is a long time when things are going wrong.

Taking a stand against silence D

uring the All Blacks test against Tonga earlier this month, I was impressed with the noise the crowd made for the “moment against silence”.

It was a loud and clear acknowledgment from rugby fans that so many of us struggle with mental health or addiction issues – no matter who we are and where we come from – and toughing it out in silence is not the answer.

For too long the mental health of New Zealanders has not been a priority. Our services have been stretched.

Sadly, too many people have felt they could not speak up and have not received the support they needed.

If you are going though mental health struggles, it can feel isolating.

But you are not alone. There is help available and the Government has a duty to make it

Workshops build on dollar sense A workshop aimed at building financial confidence for farmers will be hosted by the Dairy Women’s Network in Ashburton next week.

It is a time of unprecedented change in the dairy industry and farmers are transitioning into a new operating environment, the network says.

It is running 17 workshops across the country for its members, with the help of ASB, and the Ashburton workshop will be at Lake Hood on October 2.

The sessions will be focused on the fundamentals of rural banking and finance, and the wider industry picture.

“Maintaining control of your business and ensuring it is resilient enough to continue to be profitable is paramount,” Dairy Women’s Network CEO Jules Benton said.

The workshops aim to build greater knowledge, awareness and understanding of financial management, and develop stronger budgeting skills and behaviour.

ASB rural general manager Richard Hegan said the dairy sector had had a golden run over the past 20 years or so.

“But we’re seeing more change in the industry than almost ever before.

“There is so much opportunity, but we know there are some tough challenges facing the sector. The more we can help build financial confidence in our farmers the

Those attending the Fundamentals Workshop will develop a clear understanding of how a bank assesses a dairy business and will gain a deeper level of comfort and control of what can be done within a business to support a banking relationship.

They will also gain valuable

insights into how other farmers have built greater resilience into their business to withstand dairy downturns.

“We believe the 90-minute Fundamentals Workshops are extremely important for those just starting out or who have been running their finances for only a few years,” Benton said. “The team at ASB will cover strategies and ideas, to give less experienced dairy farmers seeking more information and guidance,

control of their business to build greater financial confidence.”

The Bigger Picture Workshops are for more experienced dairy operators who already have a good understanding of how a bank assesses risk and are focused on building greater resilience in their business.

These workshops cover the dairy sector story over the past 20 years and why building resilience in a dairy business is paramount.

They will also explore how to

build resilience in business, as well as looking at diversification options.

The Dairy Women’s Network (DWN) was founded in the late 1990s with the aim of providing a support network for women involved in the dairy industry. It has over 10,000 members in 33 regional groups.

Measures established in $50 million loan NZME Synlait Milk will reap cheaper interest costs if it hits various environmental, social and governance in a $50 million, four-year loan with ANZ Bank. However, if it falls short, that bill will be higher.

“This is the first time any New Zealand company has agreed with its bankers to link its sustainability agenda to its cost of funds. This is exciting and innovative,” Katharine Tapley, head of sustainable finance solutions for ANZ, said.

The loan will effectively transfer ANZ’s existing $50m committed four-year revolver loan with Synlait into an ESG linked loan and a discount or premium to the base lending margin will be applied, based on its performance around a score of measures. Synlait and ANZ declined to specify details around the discount or premium, citing commercial sensitivity.

However, Synlait did confirm ANZ’s $50m portion of its $100m secured syndicated revolving credit facility has been transferred to the new ESG linked loan.

It became a different tranche within the overall syndicated revolving credit facility and the loan has a maturity date of August 1, 2023, a spokesperson said.

According to Synlait chief financial officer Nigel Greenwood, the company is required to be transparent around ESG and therefore needs to report openly in its annual report and soon-to-be-released sustainability reports.

“This information is used to produce an annual risk report produced by Sustainalytics. The report measures Synlait’s risk rating across 11 different measures,” he said. Those measures include things like carbon-own operations, land use and biodiversity supply chain, human capital and business ethics.

According to Tapley, this kind of lending is a core part of ANZ’s sustainable finance offering and is the 10th transaction of its kind completed across its Asia-Pacific network in the last nine months with clients in multiple sectors from transport infrastructure, power generation, water and waste treatment to food production.

Tapley said ANZ is focused on working with its customers to transition to a low-carbon and more sustainable economy.

The bank’s view is that strong ESG risk and opportunity management is an indicator of strong future performance and “we also believe that we can accelerate this transition by incentivising our customers to out-perform on their ESG agendas”.

She said Synlait fits the bill for this kind of funding because of its commitment to continuously improving its ESG performance.

Synlait got ahead of other milk processors last year when it committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent per kilogram of milk solids on-farm and 50 per cent per kg of milksolids offfarm by 2028.

Less flowering, better farming goal A quintessential Kiwi landscape usually includes green pastures dotted with livestock munching on healthy, vibrant grass.

Those green fields are generally full of ryegrass and in late spring the ryegrass flowers. When it does, it is no longer as nutritious for the livestock feeding on it.

A research project from the University of Otago’s Department of Biochemistry is aiming to develop a ryegrass that doesn’t flower on-farm. That project, headed by Associate Professor Richard Macknight and Dr Lynette Brownfield, was this month awarded $999,999 by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) Endeavour Fund Smart Ideas programme.

The research could ultimately lead to a far more productive and efficient New Zealand farming landscape, Macknight says.

“There have been recent advances in our genetic understanding of how flowering is controlled, and we are using this knowledge as a starting point to discover the key genes required to prevent ryegrass flowering on the farm.”

The successful development of ryegrass cultivars that don’t flower in field conditions will extend peak production, enabling farmers to utilise current farmland more efficiently, Macknight says.

That will increase productivity, making the reduction of land use more financially viable, thereby reducing environmental impact.

“If a ryegrass variety that we help develop ends up being grown by New Zealand farmers and it helps farming become

more sustainable then that would be tremendous – that’s the ultimate goal,” he says.

The problem with suppressing flowering is, if the grass doesn’t flower at all, it won’t produce the seeds for farmers to plant, Brown-

field said.

“So to get around this problem we are aiming to develop a plant that can be induced to flower for seed production under artificial conditions, but will not flower when grown on New Zealand

farms.”

While the potential benefits are significant to New Zealand, its environment and its farming sector, the reality is such research needs serious backing to succeed.

The Endeavour Fund has provid-

ed that backing, Macknight said.

“Without this funding we couldn’t undertake this research, so we are certainly grateful MBIE has recognised the potential of this research. Now, the work begins.”

Studying flexible milking NZME DairyNZ and research partners including Lincoln University are exploring flexible milking options, including variations of three milkings over two days, which some Southland dairy farms are already using.

Dr Paul Edwards, of DairyNZ, said the three-year project was launched in July and would look at the implications that various versions of three milkings over two days would have for production, as well as stock and staff welfare.

“We want to build a great workplace for the world’s most talented workforce,” he said.

“Milking is a time-consuming task and requires half [a farm’s] annual labour input.

“In terms of trying to improve workplace attractiveness, milking is a good place to start.”

Flexible Milking for Healthier People and Cows is funded by the Sustainable Farming Fund, which contributed nearly $500,000, with a further $300,000 contributed by DairyNZ levy payers.

Another $222,000 of “in kind” support will also be supplied.

The programme will run until

During the first year, researchers on the Lincoln University Research Farm will use four herds on four farmlets.

Twice-a-day milking will be the

control, while the other three will have various versions of three milkings over two days, including three in two from March, three in two from December and three and two for the full season.

They will look at production gains or losses and system-lev-

el effects, allowing an economic analysis.

Edwards said a form of the three-in-two milking strategy was in place on some Southland farms, especially during drier periods.

“My observation is about 30 per cent [of Southland farmers] might use it from March for the last couple of months before drying off.

“They use it as a grazing rotation tool, for putting on body condition scores (BCS) and reducing lameness.

“The question is, how early can you go with it?”

He said the three-in-two strategy would mean a better work-life balance with fewer hours’ work and a great flexibility for time off or time available for other duties.

During the term of the project, they wanted to explore how the change would impact cows, which would spend 25 per cent less time in the dairy, and to look at animal health and behaviour, reproduction performance, grazing, lying time, rumination and BCS. If the BCS improved, would it result in improved reproduction and then a need for fewer replacement cows?

They would also look at pasture production and grazing management.

They intended to interview farmers who were earlier adopters – including some from Otago and Southland – in November to find out what they had learned and what decision-making process they went through.

“There is no point reinventing the wheel,” he said.

He was also looking for three commercial farms for the project, nationally.

By year two, they intend to evaluate the effects of the system on people, as well as the benefits or drawbacks of various versions of three in two.

They will also look at the effect of extending milking intervals to 21 hours once a week.

This would enable two milkings to be completed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with one milking each on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

By year three, they will be looking at using the acquired data to model outcomes for the different flexible milking scenarios.

The airline is talking with 70 staff about the move to come into effect from December 1.

Jetstar has been flying to Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth and Palmerston North for the past four years. The presence of the budget offshoot of Qantas has been critical in dragging down the cost of notoriously high fares on regional routes.

Given the uncertainty of turboprop services beyond November 30, Jetstar customers booked on regional services after November 30 will be offered options including a full refund. About 20,000 passengers were booked on Jetstar flights beyond that date.

Air NZ quickly pounced on their rival’s news – offering discounted fares for affected Jetstar customers.

The airline had lost $20 million flying the regional network last year.

House of Travel commercial director Brent Thomas said Jetstar’s

decision was a big blow for regional New Zealand and said the move was incredibly poorly timed leading up to the Christmas holiday period.

Thomas said there was going to be an impact from an inbound point of view because it was going to be harder to get to those regions.

The outcome for travellers was likely to be less availability and higher prices.

The government is planning to introduce a conduct licensing regime governing banks, insurers and nonbank deposit takers which will be administered by the Financial Markets Authority.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi says customers can expect fairer treatment under the new regime from financial services providers.

“Under this new regime, we are aiming to ban things like target-based sales incentives which put profits ahead of people, as has been identified in recent reviews,” Faafoi says in a statement.

“Those reviews by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the FMA have also highlighted other problems in the banking and insurance sectors which include weak systems for managing conduct risks and ensuring good conduct is a priority in their business,” he says.

“We will soon introduce new legislation to parliament which will require banks, insurers and other financial service providers to put systems in place to make sure they treat their customers fairly.”

Financial institutions will be required to implement “effective policies, processes, systems and controls to meet the fair treatment standard.”

They also face obligations in rela-

tion to how they design their remuneration and any other sales incentives and how they manage the risks those incentives create.

Soft commissions will be prohibited.

The institutions will also be accountable for sales to consumers through third parties, such as retailers, car dealers and travel agents and/or airlines, who provide add-on finance and/or insurance.

The new regime will be backed by strong enforcement tools, including giving FMA the ability to direct licensed institutions to change behaviour, improve systems and processes, as well as suspend or vary the conditions of a license, Faafoi said.

Cash rate unaltered by Reserve Bank

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand kept interest rates on hold at 1 per cent as expected and the Kiwi dollar rose as a November rate cut – while possible – may not be a done deal.

According to the central bank, new information since the August monetary policy statement did not warrant a significant change to the outlook and “there remains scope for more fiscal and monetary stimulus, if necessary, to support the economy and maintain our inflation and employment objectives.”

The RBNZ had surprised markets in August when it cut the official cash rate by 50 basis points as most economists had expected a 25 basis point cut.

The New Zealand dollar was trading at 63.35 US cents at 3.30pm, up from 63.03 cents just prior to the release of the decision at 2pm. The

odds of a November rate cut fell to 76 per cent from 92 per cent prior to the release.

Ben Udy, Australia and New Zealand economist at Capital Economics, said the central bank sounded more comfortable with its position but he still thinks it will cut to 0.75 per cent early next year.

While the monetary policy committee did leave the door open for more easing, it was also fairly upbeat looking forward.

The committee members anticipate a positive impulse to economic activity over the coming year from monetary and fiscal stimulus.

“While GDP growth had slowed over the first half of 2019, impetus to domestic demand is expected to increase,” the committee said.

Household spending and construction activity are supported by low interest rates, while business investment should lift in response

to demand pressures.

Overall, the committee expected increasing demand to keep employment near its maximum sustainable level. Rising capacity pressures and increasing import costs, higher wages, and pressure on margins are expected to lift inflation gradually to 2 per cent.

However, it also noted several key uncertainties, including global trade and other geopolitical tensions and low business confidence.

Also, while fiscal policy is expected to lift domestic demand during the coming year, any increase in government spending could be delayed or it could have a smaller impact on domestic demand than assumed.

All 16 economists polled by Bloomberg had expected the rate to remain on hold today. Market pricing had pointed to about a 25 per cent chance of a cut.

Ashburton Bowling Club Ashburton Bowling Club had a great opening day in fine weather last Saturday. The greens and surrounds looked a picture after many hours of work by the green staff and volunteers.

There was a great turn out of players and other members of the club. Also present was the Mayor Donna and several of the councillors. The teams for the afternoon were put together by members of the match committees, their job being hindered by some late arrivals caused by the parking situation.

President Jo Ryk welcomed everyone to the Opening Day including eleven new members. Patron Colleen Van Leeuwarden raised the flag and Life member Diane put up the first kitty and Mayor Donna put up the first bowl. After the games everyone joined in for a great afternoon tea which was supplied by the Members.

President Jo introduced the eleven new Members to the Club. Many of those present paid their subscription including one lovely lady who gave Graham Taylor a bag of lovely shortbread as well, which was most appreciated by him.

Raffles were drawn with Mayor Donna gaining first prize along with many others. Graham & Diane from the match committees asked players to get their names up on the respective notice boards for the upcoming club championship games. They also drew the Members’ attention to the In-House Ingold Tray to be played Saturday October 12 at 12:30pm start.

Ashburton Golf Club Well we now have all the finalists locked and loaded for Championship Sunday, and by the looks of the participants it’s going to be a cracker of a day.

Start with the ladies. Bronze Div 2 Jenny Williams takes on Robin Bennett, in Bronze Div 1 Shirley Elliot and Heather Robertson will have a ding dong of a battle, and in the Silver, Mary Lou Watson will have her first crack at the big prize playing against Mrs Consistency Pauline Bell.

In the Men’s section, Junior B kicks off first with George Brown playing Greg Fleming, both very strong match players with good wins under their belts already this year. Junior A sees Alan White and Jeff Williamson lock horns.

Jeff has already bamboozled a couple of young guns this year but Alan will be a tougher nut to crack. In intermediates there could be a few bits of banter flying with Pete Morrison and Sean Strange exchanging pleasantries. Two chalk and cheese players. Sean will be longer off the tee all day but Pete will invariably finish closer to the hole, this will be a great spectacle.

Then the top 2 seeds in qualifying Jeff Hewitt and Blair Franklin will meet in the senior final. Both of them part of the Holmes Pennants winning team, both in the Aorangi teams that took on Canterbury last Sunday, and both very confident of getting their names on the Legends Board in the clubhouse for the first time. Well done and good luck to everyone playing on Championship Sunday, including all the Plate finalists and the Nine hole players. Don’t forget to set your clocks forward an hour before going to bed on Saturday, we don’t want anyone sleeping in and missing their tee time.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club President Lion Noel Lowe welcomed members and visitors from Mayfield and Rakaia Lions Clubs to the September Meeting of the Pakeke Lions Club held at the Hotel Ashburton.

Lion Robin Ford read the apologies and Clip Boards with regard to Arthritis; Pink Ribbon & Blind Appeal Collections were circulated. Also members were recruited to help with the Ashburton Borough School’s Sports Day and the Christmas Raffle was discussed, along with the visiting to other Lions Clubs. Cynthia Young said grace.

After the meal Lion Bob Crean introduced Judy Swaney the speaker for the evening.

Judy gave a very informative talk about her involvement on the running of the Day Care Centre which is now at their new premises at the Hospital and is funded by the Canterbury D.H.B. Having had 25 years’ experience in this field Judy is a qualified Divisional Therapist and related many of the interesting and amusing tales from her work with the elderly. She thanked Pakeke Lions for the work contributed to the running of the Day Care Centre providing drivers for transport of clients.

Judy was thanked by Lion Graeme Neale.

Zone President Garth Bateup then inducted a new member, Mr Jim Young, accompanied by his wife Doctor Diane Young. Jim was sponsored by Lion Les Briggs.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club We are still getting good turnouts on club days and the Tuesday competition is still popular.

We played the last round of the Interclub on Tuesday, here in Ashburton. We were second highest scorer today, and second overall just one point behind Ascot. A good effort by all involved. A thank you must go to all who helped with the running of this event.

We had 7 players take part in the Spring Triples at Ascot with 5 of them being placed. Johnny Wright was in the team that won the championship, and Ellen Pithie in the team that was runner up.

Shelagh Field was in the team that won the plate, and Shirley Cant’s team won the bowl with Jan Guilford in the team that was runner up. A day enjoyed by all our players.

We had 3 players take part in tournaments in Dunedin this weekend. Richard Browne and Janet Goodin (Caversham) were second in the Otago doubles, and Karen and Neville Bensdorp came 3rd.

Karen and Neville Bensdorp also finished in the top 8 in the Waipounamu Doubles on the second day. A good effort by all those taking part in these tournaments.

The next event we host is the Piste of Origin on October 6. For the very first time there will be six clubs taking part so it promises to be a great day.

Ashburton MSA Travel Section Last week a group of over thirty people travel by bus via country roads to the Rangitata Huts north. Most have never been there before. We enjoyed morning tea outside in the sunshine and a talk on the settlement by long-time resident John Wilkie.

We then travelled to Timaru and spent a little time there and had lunch at the Old Bank. A great meal for the over 60’s of just $10-00. We finished off with a drive

and thanked all members that participated especially the ladies for their baking for the cake stall and special thanks went to Lion Norman Andrews for the donation of fire-wood for the raffle. Lion Jo Butchard reported on the forthcoming Charity Sale and Christmas Raffle. With regard to the Sextons Cottage at the Cemetery, Lion David Horrell reported that a Council Grant had been secured to help with

the forthcoming repairs etc.

September 2019 It has been an interesting few months, since the closing of the Lynnford Hall and discovering the origins of the “Picture’ that was presented to the Lynnford School children by the Red Cross for their great effort in collecting coupons during World War Two. The Ration Books with coupons were issued at the Post Office for goods that were in short supply such as sugar and tea, then clothing and later, meat and butter along with petrol.

A branch of the Red Cross at Lynnford met in the school room and packed food into parcels for Britain.

Hopefully a new home will be found for this piece of history to hang.

During the War, the Red Cross collected Rose Hips and Ergot fungus for Britain.

Rose Hips are high in vitamin C and there was not the availability of citrus fruit during WWII. Ergot was important because it was a source of drug that was used as a coagulant and antiseptic to stop bleeding during surgery. For Britain, the need for such drugs was critical for the treatment of wounded soldiers and civilians during the war. The major source of ergot was Europe, but it was no longer available.

New Zealand ergot was found not to be of equal chemical quality to Hungary and was cancelled in 1943.

Gilbert Donaldson spoke to the meeting of his memories of his youth as a school boy, first at Lynnford then later at Hinds School.

He had on display, his Plunket book, original school bag and lunch tin, School Journals, School reports, Bible Class certificates and cigarette cards (that were keenly collected) When a senior boy at Hinds he would have done duty to carry crates of school milk from the Railway Station to Hinds school.

Once lived on a hill and now lives on the flat looking out at the mountains in the countryside. Her hobbies are travel and family. After morning tea Joyce was kind enough to fill in for the main speaker who was unable to come and told us about her recent trip to China with a friend. Travelled by plane and bus, learning the language they stayed at a hotel by shopping malls. You take your life in crossing the street, people everywhere.

The temperatures were 35de.

Went on group tours around buildings etc and saw some green areas. The food was different and very hot. Visited the Panda reserve station and went to several shows.

They went on a 6 hour train trip to meet a boat trip at Xangshi, then had day trips going on walks and being entertained by locals with song and dance. The ship went through a ship lift where the boat is lifted by the level of water to take them through the channel.

They enjoyed several shows on board.

Visited markets and climbed many steps. Ended the boat trip and moved on to Xlan.

China is very clean and tidy with road sweepers working and lots of security cameras everywhere. Travelled on a Bullet train at 200km an hour. Went to the Terracotta Warriors, they look so different in real. Visited lovely gardens and the pergola. This finished the trip and on the plane for home again. Jeanette thanked her for stepping in at short notice.

Tinwald Garden Club The July meeting of the Garden Club listened to a very interesting and informative talk by John Burn on the subject of growing truffle. Most of us had no idea that truffle could be grown in Canterbury, and actually John told us that for some time he was the most southern grower of the fungus in the world. He grows the black Perigro truffle, planting inoculated English oaks and common hazel nut trees in 1990, and then settling down to wait.

His first truffle was harvested on July 12, 2004, and for some time he supplied the Auckland market, telling us the truffle was not well known in NZ until 2009. A very high Ph level of about 7.6 is required and to achieve this he applied 90t.of lime per acre on 2½ acres.

They grow on the roots of the trees about one inch down and cannot be seen from above, important to keep off the ground, and apply irrigation only very sparingly to keep the roots near the surface.

He finds them by crawling round sniffing and observing small cracks in the ground and eruptions like mushroom tops. A dog cannot tell which are mature unless specially trained.

Serve about 10-15 gm per person, grate over hot steak, or put sliced truffle between chicken flesh and skin, or poke into beef joint. About a six week window of opportunity, they cannot be frozen, mature truffle are on the verge of going rotten.

In August the Club enjoyed a quiz afternoon with questions delivered by Jenette Storrier and Lois Gibson. As usual, such questions might have been designed to show us how ignorant we are! There were three groups of questions on general knowledge, Ashburton information and Royalty. Thank you Jenette and Lois.

Tinwald puts on a jump show It was all go at the Tinwald Pony Club grounds on Saturday morning, as the club hosted its annual show-jumping show. Among those testing their skills on a warm and sunny Saturday morning was Tamara Bird on Lexi.

Lions Club of Ashburton It is a very busy time for the Lions Club of Ashburton members. Our September meeting speaker was Mrs Annie Bately, Anglican co-ordinator of Care Services,

and donated their services to collecting the entry fees on behalf of the Truck Show committee. This money was donated to the local Cancer Society.

Boulevard Day saw Playhouse raffle tickets being sold and the Food Trailer was in full swing selling plenty of hot dogs and the like.

The joint initiative between the Hinds Lions Club and the Lions Club of Ashburton to assist with the dismantling of the shade house at Trotts Gardens proved very successful. This working bee involved a major effort on Friday September 13 followed by Friday September 20.

In brief Messi hurt again Lionel Messi was substituted at halftime of his first start for Barcelona since a long injury layoff because of a leg muscle problem.

Messi hurt his left leg less than half an hour into the Spanish league match against Villarreal at Camp Nou Stadium on Tuesday.

The playmaker left the field and doctors attended to his leg for few minutes before he eventually returned and finished the half.

Messi didn’t return for the second half, though, being replaced

by Ousmane Dembele. “When something happens to Messi, it seems that the world comes to a halt,” Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said. “But it looks like it’s only some minor pain in his abductor (muscle). We replaced him as a precaution. We don’t want to take any risks.”

Nets not planning for Durant yet AP The Brooklyn Nets expect to wait a year before Kevin Durant plays for them.

General manager Sean Marks said this week the Nets are planning this season without the injured All-Star. He added Durant will have a say in determining when he’s ready.

“With Kevin, I think what we’re going to say is the expectations are that he’ll be out for the year,” Marks said.

Durant is recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon. He was injured while playing for Golden State in the NBA Finals, then left the Warriors to sign with the Nets in July.

At the time, the Nets left open the possibility that Durant could

play this season. That’s still possible, but Marks isn’t banking on it.

“I’ve been excited to see, I think we all have, how he’s approached this rehab, which has been great, very refreshing and energising for the whole group,” Marks said.

“But at the end of the day, this is a long-term plan here. This was never about this next season. This is about getting an elite athlete back to elite physical shape on the court, whatever that takes.”

Durant returned from an injured calf muscle he suffered in the postseason for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, but lasted only 12 minutes before leaving with a more severe injury.

Marks said Durant hasn’t given any indication that he plans to take things slowly.

“I think you’re looking at one of

the great competitors out there, so I think I would be remiss if I said no, he probably doesn’t want to play,” Marks said. “I think it’s obvious he wants to play, but I think there’s more at stake here.

“This is, again, a long-term approach. There are a lot of people with a lot of sweat equity in this from the rehab perspective and so forth. And so I think it’ll be a group that makes the decision, and obviously Kevin included as to when and how that return is made.”

In the meantime, Marks thinks Durant will try to be around his new team, though he can’t predict how much. He isn’t even sure yet whether Durant will accompany the Nets to China next month for their exhibition games against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Durant is expected to speak Friday when the Nets hold their media day.

He signed with Brooklyn along with fellow All-Star Kyrie Irving, who was hurt Tuesday when he was elbowed during a pickup game. Marks doesn’t believe the injury is serious, although Irving went for an evaluation accompanied by coach Kenny Atkinson.

When Durant and Irving join a team that won 42 games and made the playoffs last season, the Nets could turn into one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference. They know it could take a season.

“I don’t know that all the guys we signed in the offseason are coming here for mediocrity,” Marks said. “That’s not part of it.

This is why we went in.”

South Canty claims crown Association croquet’s annual interprovincial match pitting Canterbury’s best against South Canterbury’s best played out in Ashburton on Sunday.

Four lawns at the Waireka Croquet Club were used for the tie and while it was the Canterbury team that made the early running to be ahead by four hoops at the start of round three, South Canterbury’s tail well and truly wagged.

They scored a victory by nine hoops in the third game to take the tie out for the first time in four years.

There were local players in ac-

tion on both sides, with Gail Benseman the sole Mid Canterbury player in the Canterbury line-up, and a number in the South Canterbury side.

South Canterbury had the services of Waireka’s Logan McCorkindale, Methven’s Heather Santy and Allenton’s Maurice Sunbeam.

It’s set to be a busy weekend at the Waireka Croquet Club again this weekend, with the club hosting its annual have-a-go day on Sunday. Anyone keen to give croquet a go is welcome to attend and it’s set to get under way at 1.15pm.

Perfect cup boat still work in progress NZME Team New Zealand’s first fullscale AC75 has passed early tests with flying colours, but the team is under no illusions that they have the perfect model – yet.

Team New Zealand were the first of the competing syndicates to launch a full-scale AC75, getting Te Aihe on the water at the start of the month, with the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic following suit days later.

The launch gave the team a brief moment of celebration amid the constant pressure of the campaign. After working exclusively in simulations while their

first AC75 was being built, the crew got their first opportunity to sail last week and has already had the 75-foot foiling monohull up on its foils under sail.

Over the coming months, the team has to get familiar with the yacht and identify what needs to be improved in the second boat which will be used to defend the America’s Cup. “We’re under no illusions that if we were to race the America’s Cup in the exact boat we’ve got on the water now, then we wouldn’t be too competitive,” Team New Zealand designer Dan Bernasconi said. “These first few weeks on the water are incredi-

bly valuable because we’ll learn lessons in terms of performance, boat handling and mechanical systems that will feed into the next design. It’s really these next few weeks that are most important because we need to get into the build of our second boat really soon to be able to launch in time to get that on the water and debug for the America’s Cup. “There’s not a huge window, which is why it’s a pretty big advantage for us to be on the water ahead of the British and the Italians, because their window is rapidly disappearing.”

Team New Zealand wasted no time in trying to work out issues

and identify changes, focusing on how the mechanical systems are operating before moving on the look at the boat speed and performance numbers.

The AC75 is a complex vessel, with a number of mechanical and hydraulic systems needed to work together for the boat to stay on its foils. Team New Zealand has had a few minor teething issues early on, including problems hoisting the twin-skin mainsail.

“Every new boat and, particularly, a new class presents problems – so there’s been some minor issues, but nothing major and we’re really pleased with how it’s going,” Bernasconi said.

Marshall calls out double standards NZME Kiwis and Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall has called out the NRL for their double standards in dealing with the Israel Folau saga.

Tongan Rugby League this week announced that Folau will be available for selection in tests against Great Britain and Australia, but won’t be playing in the NRL’s International 9’s after the NRL didn’t accept his selection for the tournament.

Speaking to NRL 360, Marshall questioned the governing body’s stance on Folau considering they’ve welcomed convicted violent offenders back into the game.

“It doesn’t faze me if he’s allowed or he’s not allowed to play.

I definitely don’t agree with the things he’s said, but to me, I think we need to decide what we forgive and what we forget,” Marshall said.

multi-million dollar contract, on the advice of an independent panel, for “high level” breaches of the player’s code of conduct.

Folau is currently in the midst of a legal battle over that decision, but will play rugby league in the meantime, with Mate Ma’a Tonga set to play Great Britain in Hamilton on October 26, before meeting Australia at Eden Park on November 2.

Folau said that he was excited about returning to rugby league.

“I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to represent God, my family, my heritage and the people of Tonga,” he said. “I am thankful that the RLIF have accepted my availability to play.

“I don’t want to bring any of my personal matters into this and I am grateful that the IRLF have endorsed my availability.

“What I will do now is focus on playing great rugby league and do my talking on the field.”

ABs put in hard yards at Beppu NZME The All Blacks have arrived in Beppu, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu determined to put in the work on the training pitch over the next week ahead of their match against Canada.

It’s why coach Steve Hansen raised a metaphorical eyebrow at suggestions his side had 10 days off following their 23-13 victory over South Africa in Yokohama which will almost certainly set them up for a quarter-final against either Scotland or Japan rather than the more ominous Ireland.

His players have two days off while they are here in this coastal spa city popular with tourists, and they are likely to enjoy the scenery and slightly slower pace compared with Tokyo, but they also have a plan to work as hard as they can in order to earn the right to ease off a little in terms of training load ahead of the knockout matches.

“I don’t think it’s about keeping their minds on the job,” Hansen said when asked about the prospect of the newly installed No 1 side in the world facing the 22nd best in nearby Oita Stadium.

“They know what they’re here for. We saw that against South Africa. What happens now is that we’ve got to knuckle down and make sure we work hard so that when we get to the quarter-final week that we can make sure we can do what we need to do.”

Flanker Matt Todd, who received a knock to a shoulder in the first week of training here but who is likely to play against Canada or Namibia, confirmed Hansen had a tough week planned and had conveyed that to players.

ne game down, just three more proper ones (hopefully) to go.

A third string All Black side would deal to Namibia, Canada and Italy in Pool B. Steve Hansen’s selections for the playoff games – initially against Scotland presumably – are already in focus.

To cut to the chase, when Brodie Retallick is fit I’d shift Ardie Savea back to the bench for the toughest sudden death games.

One reason for this view is the inept collective effort from the All Black front rowers against South Africa.

The props were flops, the hookers not much better compared to a Malcolm Marx onslaught.

Dane Coles’ clever contribution to the Scott Barrett try was a rare highlight.

Savea is the flavour of the moment at the world tournament. But the much bigger lock/ loosie Barrett was so good against the Springboks that he is now an essential item at No 6 against the power of England, Ireland or South Africa.

The Springboks’ fawning attitude towards the All Blacks after the 10-point Yokohama defeat is a con job. Don’t be fooled, because the heavyweight packs will be

licking their lips at the thought of taking the All Black forwards on.

The front row was so bad in Yokohama it suggested leaving Owen Franks behind was a mistake. Even illness-hit Karl Tu’inukuafe would have been a better bet.

Front row highlights? Replacement loosehead Ofa Tuungafasi hurtled into a few well executed tackles after joining the fray with Angus Ta’avao in the 50th minute.

But that was about it.

Nepo Laulala was a seagull, Joe Moody defended busily but not in a confrontational way, and Ta’avao was hardly sighted.

They, and just about everyone else on the field, were overshadowed by the magnificent Steven Kitshoff (my man of the match ahead of the Barrett brothers).

The ‘Bok loosehead still had enough energy to smash over a fresh Sonny Bill Williams in the 51st minute – one of nine powerful charges he made – and, incredibly for this day and age, lasted until the 67th minute. His All Black opponents were embarrassed.

Hansen has spent the year demanding more from his props… and got less. They made a total of two forgettable runs – one each to Laulala and Tuungafasi – compared to 11 from the ‘Boks.

A comparison with other top sides from the opening World Cup clashes makes extraordinary reading.

The muscular Irish props made a total of 17 runs, followed

by Australia (16), France (14), Scotland (12), then Wales and England (6 each).

Even Tonga’s 150kg man mountain Ben Tameifuna ran the ball up four times against England despite appearing to be out of breath.

The All Black props were so passive it was hard to fathom given the enormity of the occasion.

Just imagine what the All Blacks would achieve if they did have more front foot ball.

Most alarmingly, the All Black

scrum finished in a mess, with Patrick Tuipulotu packing down in place of Barrett at lock and the new front row on.

Ta’avao was twice buried by replacement loosehead Tendai Mtawarira. The game ended with Tuungafasi skidding backwards on his face after Frans Malherbe had reappeared for the injured Trevor Nyakane.

The All Blacks need to accept Barrett’s presence is vital to compensate for a power deficiency.

For all of his wild man brilliance which included a couple of big steals on defence, blindside flanker Savea didn’t confront the ‘Bok forwards the way Scott Barrett did in the tradition of the incomparable Jerome Kaino.

Savea operates in spurts, ones that should be saved for an attempted second half demolition job.

The lightweight fireball also needs to be saved from burnout.

If the All Blacks go with their best forwards to face the biggest teams, starting Savea will leave Tuipulotu and Barrett on the bench, not an ideal positional or impact mix.

No 8 Kieran Read is such an amazing lineout performer that the All Blacks don’t need Barrett’s added height when Retallick returns.

But he is an athletic, clever and wholehearted footballer. They need his confrontational attitude, driving tackles and bulk.

Haka unfair advantage, claims Irish writer NZME An Irish rugby writer has called for a stop to the All Blacks haka, saying it “gives New Zealand an unfair advantage”.

In a column titled “Haka gives New Zealand an unfair advantage and needs to stop” on sports website Pundit Arena, Ewan MacKenna asks why the World Cup is still “pandering to the dance”.

“That’s unfortunate as New Zealand are justifiably big-headed enough without a massaging of their already massive egos,” MacKenna wrote.

“Yet even World Rugby have it in their rules that to not stand on your own 10-metre line and watch a bunch stick out their tongues and slap their thighs is worthy of a fine and a telling off.

“Indeed if we are to engage in these cultural activities in rugby, perhaps Ireland’s opponents should have to spend a few minutes watching our players sitting around a table in midfield, sipping cups of tea and bemoaning everything from economic migrants to the latest bin charges.”

MacKenna said the haka had “been ruthlessly exploited and commercialised and ultimately cheapened”.

“That’s not to say it doesn’t have beauty and meaning to Maoris [sic], but Irish dancing can having meaning to us and that doesn’t change the fact that it was monetised by Michael Flatley turning to liquid plastic on stage.”

After taking shots at the haka, MacKenna went on to attempt to describe the practical reasons why the traditional challenge gives New Zealand an advantage.

“There’s a practical reason why the Haka shouldn’t happen as, while it provides a psychological edge through self-inspiration and via an attempt at opponent intimidation, it also provides a small physical edge as others are forced to stand still and go briefly cold.

“There’s another reason too though as there is a huge lack of self-awareness about this. Again there are those who’ll say it’s native and it is to some, but the majority of New Zealand players haven’t been Maori. Instead, they descend from forefathers who were actually ruthless oppressors of natives.

“Anyway, it’s completely overdone. In rugby, and in life. A New Zealand graduation or homecoming, a wedding afters or merely a boozed-up night out, it seems, can barely pass by without a YouTube

video emerging of a man leaping about with all the authenticity of a Blackrock College conversation detailing both tillage methodology and livestock vaccination.”

Tonga, Samoa and Fiji also perform traditional challenges before each test match.

This isn’t the first time the haka has come under the microscope in world rugby, with similar questions being posed throughout All

Black history.

Legendary Wallabies captain John Eales, who instructed his team to turn their backs to the haka in a 1996 game, has said that he regrets his decision and now understands why the haka holds such a sacred place in Kiwi sporting lore.

“People often ask me about the haka and I do regret not facing the haka at this time,” Eales said in

2014.

“I never felt it gave [the All Blacks] an unfair advantage, but it did let them own those moments before kickoff and we were basically just passively taking it.

“The true value of the haka is in connection, and as the opposition, you need to decide how you are going to connect and not dissipate as a team in that moment.”

The Irish writer’s column comes after some fans sung during the haka before the All Blacks’ 23-13 victory over South Africa in their World Cup opener, which was criticised as “disrespectful” by many others.

The reaction to the kapa o pango at International Stadium Yokohama was met with a strong reaction on social media, with many criticising the behaviour of the fans at the stadium.

“The f****** disrespect,” said one fan on Twitter. “When south Pacific teams haka before the game it’s the equivalent of a national anthem … to sing ole ole over that would be like singing fly eagles fly during the Star spangled banner.”

While many others added similar sentiments, some also argued that it was a fair way to respond to the All Blacks’ challenge.

Fiji was beaten by Uruguay 27-30 in the first upset of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Minnows Uruguay stun Fiji 30-27 Uruguay pulled off a huge upset win over Fiji 30-27 in the Rugby World Cup in Japan last night.

The result which, while perhaps not throwing all tournament predictions into disarray, does at least confirm Uruguay as an emerging rugby nation. They played with a real belief in their ability to win today, showing energy defensively and forcing Fiji into plenty of errors.

Uruguay took their chances well, with Santiago Arata and Felipe Berchesi controlling the game, while Nicolas Freitas was excellent with his work on the wing.

Fiji meanwhile, will be left to rue what was a horrible day at the office. They dropped far too much ball, pushing offloads that weren’t warranted and continually releasing pressure with their errors.

When they did control the ball they were

able to create enough chances, and ended up scoring more tries than their opponents.

However, the goalkicking was horrendous, with Josh Matavesi and Ben Volavola managing just one successful kick from six attempts. Felipe Berchesi meanwhile kicked six out of seven to prove the difference.

Fiji do pick up a pair of bonus points, but their hopes of advancing are now probably in tatters. Wins over Wales and Georgia will be required, but they’ll need help with other results going their way.

Uruguay meanwhile may dare to dream of further upsets.

The South Amricans were ahead 24-12 at half-time, thanks to some tenacious defence. They were also the more accurate of the two sides and played smart rugby.

The rugged yet beautiful Mid Canterbury coastline is part of the Longbeach Coastal Challenge.

There’s nine weeks left until race day, but getting your entries in now for the Longbeach Coastal Challenge could pay dividends.

All entries received by midnight on Monday will go into the draw to win a retreat for two at Te Wepu Intrepid Pods, while all youth entries received for this year’s event will go in the draw to win a mountainbike donated by Big Al’s.

They’re just two of the prizes on offer for simply taking part in the event, which has now been running for well over 10 years and proves popular year after year

with people of all ages.

It’s the kind of event you can do on your own, or as part of a team, whether it be a work team, a team of friends, or as a family.

Spokeswoman Rachael Rickard said the challenge always received good local support, but it was also a destination event for many because it was the one day a year that people had a chance to explore that part of the Mid Canterbury countryside.

Most years, entries exceed 1000, although numbers fell slightly last year due to the conditions.

“We were just shy of that last year and we didn’t get that last 50 or 100 that rock up on the day because the weather is good,” Rickard said.

So organisers have their fingers well and truly crossed that this year the weather will play ball and they’re hoping to hit around 1200 entries.

Each year, the proceeds of the event are split evenly between Longbeach School and the Hinds and Districts Lions Club.

The Longbeach Coastal Challenge includes 35km, 23km, or 12km distances for mountain bikers, and 21km, 12km and 5km for runners, along with 12km and 5km options for walkers.

It started in 2007 as a mountainbike-only event, but it grew as the years went on to include runners and walkers, giving people of all ages and athletic abilities a chance to experience racing along a stunning piece of Mid Canterbury’s coastline.

It’s run by a team of volunteers made up of parents from Longbeach School and Hinds and Districts Lions members, and together they form a pretty well-oiled machine these days.
