Flavour boon for wine New research into how microbes affect the local character of wines could be a boon for New Zealand’s viticulture industry, scientists say. The flavour and aroma of different wines was previously thought to depend on climate and soil minerals, but a University of Auckland study of six major New Zealand wine-growing regions suggested microbes in wine yeast had a bigger impact. Research Fellow Sarah Knight said the research findings were small, but significant. “We were only dealing with one kind of yeast, and we still found a lot of variance. In a wine-making situation, you’re dealing with multiple yeasts,” Ms Knight said. She said understanding the chemical compounds responsible for different flavours, such as the apple taste common to Nelson wines, could let growers preserve the regional character of their products.

House of straw A house which will feature in the New Zealand version of the British television programme Grand Designs is taking shape on a hillside above State Highway 6, south of Queensberry. The two-storey house is visible from the Luggate to Tarras road, and is distinguished by an unusually curved roof. It appears not all its windows are yet in place. Senior publicist for the show Jean Mowatt said the house is being built by Mike Hodges and Cathy Mann and overlooks the Clutha River from a rocky outcrop. Ms Mowatt said it was being being built “completely out of straw and hemp” with floors made from clay, lime and earth, and other features from schist and kanuka. “It is a grand design in every sense of the word.” The house was “almost completed” and was expected to feature about halfway through the series, Ms Mowatt said. The programme is being hosted by Wellington architect Chris Moller. A concrete house being built in the Catlins will also feature in the series. Grand Designs New Zealand will start on TV3 on October 4.

More than $17,000 has been raised in an internet appeal for the children of Hamilton Zoo curator Samantha Kudeweh, who was killed by a Sumatran tiger last weekend. A Givealittle webpage has since the appeal began on Wednesday attracted $17,008.50c in donations from 138 people, toward a trust set up for Ms Kudeweh and her husband Richard’s children, 9-year-old Billy and 3-year-old Sage. The Kudeweh Family Trust says all proceeds are to go towards the children’s education needs, and ensuring their physical and emotional wellbeing. - NZME

History-making All Blacks jersey A 110-year-old jersey worn by a legendary New Zealand captain is expected to fetch the highest ever price for a rugby shirt – after being kept by a Welsh laundryman for generations. Dave Gallaher wore the famous jersey during his country’s first tour of the British Isles. It is expected to be sold for between £20,000 and £40,000 because it was the first time the famous all black strip was worn on tour. Gallaher exchanged his muddy jersey with his Welsh counterpart after their match. Wales captain Gwyn Nicholls took it to his family laundry business in Cardiff, before handing it to his rugby-mad van boy Thomas Mahoney. The jersey was kept in his family for generations but is up for auction next month. The price for Gallaher’s shirt is expected to top the world record for a rugby jersey, set in May when a fan bid £21,500 for a New Zealand shirt worn during the same ‘Originals’ tour and kept at a local rugby club in South Wales.

Nehe makes good Yesterday’s man of the match Nehe MilnerSkudder is glad he made up for a mistake in the Rugby World Cup opener after copping some grief from Sonny Bill Williams during the week. Milner-Skudder was one of the stand-out performers in the All Blacks less than convincing 58-14 win over Namibia after botching a try in the opening win over Argentina. Williams looked to hand the Hurricanes speedster an easy try in the opener but Milner-Skudder dropped the pass cold. Home gym’s big battle

Monique Rouxel’s gym might be the most popular exercise spot in town, but that doesn’t make it legal, the Ashburton District Council says. The Alford Forest Road gym has been running in Mrs Rouxel’s back yard for 18 months and over that time its membership has grown from just a handful to 150. And it’s that popularity that has earned it the ire of its neighbours and a clash with the council that could see it forced to relocate or close. A battle has been running for seven months over the gym’s future after a neighbour complained about noise and the number of cars parked in the area. The council responded by telling Mrs Rouxel she needed a resource consent to operate her business in a residential zone. She’s continued to run her gym but has taken a long, hard look at what’s required to make that gym legal. The cost is high

in time and money. “I didn’t realise I needed a consent when I started but now I’ve been told someone’s complained about the cars, that I’m running a business, but it’s just a home business. It’s not like it’s running all day, every day,” she said. For many of her clients, the gym has become a second home, for others it’s been a life-changer. Their 45-minute exercise sessions have reshaped bodies and brightened lives. Using her physical training background and experience in the New Zealand Army, she started a fitness programme for people who may not normally go to a gym. “I can’t give this up. Too many people rely on me, not just for exercise but for mentoring and support. It’s not just about clipping the ticket, I spend a lot of time with them. “The gym is about community and it’s about enjoyment. What you wear and how you look is unimportant and that’s helped

many people get over the perception of gyms being for people who looked and dressed a certain way,” she said. She’s gutted that 18 months of work might have to be scrapped. “I’ve met with the council and they came back with all these conditions and requests. “I’ve sent them two emails over the last two weeks and they didn’t answer, now they’ve given me notice that I have to be out today (Friday). I asked for an extension but they haven’t replied.” She’s angry that her fitness sessions are now being treated as a business and is upset that an unidentified neighbour has complained about the activity. “I’m determined I won’t be shutting down. Too many people rely on me. I’ll move to a local clubrooms if I have to but moving away will change everything for us.” Council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said council was obliged to investigate any complaint a

resident made. It was clear Mrs Rouxel was running a business from a residential address, in a residential area, and a resource consent was needed. The council first spoke to Mrs Rouxel in February and she was advised she would either need to move her business or obtain a resource consent, Ms Donaldson said. “One of the vital aspects of obtaining a resource consent is that surrounding neighbours have a chance to have their say on the activity. “Council is concerned that neighbouring properties have had an unauthorised activity in their midst which has continued and is proposed to increase. The gym is advertising on social media that 6am classes will start in October.” While no formal action had been taken at this stage, the council had sent Mrs Rouxel an advisory letter suggesting the gym cease operating until the consent issue was resolved, she said.

Some of these activities can have a major impact when they involve the generation of significant traffic and onstreet parking which causes annoyance to neighbours.. An aspect of non-residential activities is the operation of businesses based in homes, commonly called home occupations which provide residents with a source of employment with many social and economic advantages, but they can cause problems in residential areas. The range of activities and their character and scale vary considerably. Like other nonresidential activities, it is often the traffic generating and noise aspects of these activities which is of concern.”

A comprehensive economic development plan to encourage workers to Ashburton will be far more beneficial than a one-off financial incentive, according to Labour finance spokesman Grant Robertson. While on a whirlwind stopover in Ashburton on Thursday, Prime Minister John Key said a $3000 relocation allowance promised to people moving to Christchurch to work on the rebuild was also available to those who moved to Ashburton for work. However, Mr Robertson, who also visited Ashburton on Thursday for a presentation about the future of employment, believes a financial incentive is not comprehensive enough to encourage workers to the regions. “You need to make sure there are the opportunities for people to come to, and that involves a much stronger regional development plan which actually says we’re going to invest in industries, we’re going to support the growth of those,” he said. “It kind of feels like the cart’s gone before the horse a little.”

An agreed economic development plan between local government, the business community, and central government was vital to growing the regions, he said. Another factor was making sure there was robust infrastructure in each region. “There’s going to be an ICT growth sector here,” he said. “We need ultra-fast broadband, we need everybody in a position to do that, obviously we need the roads to be good, and we’ve got concerns about regional road funding being diverted away.” Education and training was also a concern. With a merger between Aoraki Polytechnic and CPIT on the horizon, Mr Robertson said it was imperative to still have tertiary opportunities available in Ashburton. “In regions like this, we need to make sure there is an opportunity for everyone to access tertiary education.” While the bulk of Ashburton’s tertiary courses were focused on trades and primary industries, there was scope to diversify, he said.

FUTURE OF WORK PRESENTATIONS The Labour Party has been taking policy development to the grassroots level during its Future of Work presentations. During the meeting in Ashburton on Thursday night, Mr Robertson talked to the party faithful about the future of employment and training, including education opportunities, changes in technology, and the need to provide opportunities for workers to retrain. The meetings are part of a two-year process in which the party will develop policies heading into the 2017 election. “It’s about giving people an opportunity to take part in this project,” Mr Robertson said. About 30 people attended the discussion, including mayor Angus McKay and district councillor Donna Favel.

The flooding that affected the western North Island in June caused about $70 million worth of damage to up to 800 rural properties, the Ministry for Primary Industries says. Ministry spokesman David Wansbrough said the greatest impact of the storm was on sheep and beef farms, due to landslides and damage to infrastructure. - NZME

Smoke bomb An old air force smoke bomb sparked a bomb scare in west Auckland yesterday. A resident on Fred Taylor Drive, Massey found the item in their basement and called police about 11.30, said a police spokesman. He said the “bomb” turned out to be a 50-year-old air force smoke bomb. The police bomb squad responded and removed the item. - NZME

Arrest warrant An arrest warrant has been issued for a Christchurch man accused of punching and kicking two dogs after he failed to appear in court yesterday. John Noel Taukiri, a 44-year-old from Aranui, has been charged with ill-treating the animals on September 8. He received a registrar’s remand earlier this month and was due in Christchurch District Court yesterday. But when he failed to appear, Judge Garry Barkle issued a warrant for his arrest. - NZME

Anniversary of death The family of 5-year-old Jack Dixon have voiced their ongoing grief on the first anniversary of his death. A huge wave swept away Jack moments after he was photographed with his cousins on Mauao’s Shelly Beach at Mt Manganui on October 1 last year. Hundreds of lifeguards and other volunteers searched for Jack in the weeks after his disappearance, but he was never found. In a public statement, Jack’s family said they “wake each day with heavy hearts” and time had not eased the pain of losing him. - NZME

They’re stacked spine to spine on trestle tables, in boxes and in some cases in plastic shopping bags and they’re all waiting for new owners. Today thousands of books that form the stock in trade of Ashburton Rotary’s annual bookfest, Bookarama, are lined up in orderly rows; today the Ashburton Sports Hall is a place of quiet concentration, but come Monday it will be nothing short of chaos. When the doors open on this year’s Bookarama, they’ll open on the largest and collection of books ever amassed for the big event, said Rotarian Lindsay Holland. Books have been coming into the club’s store shed since the doors closed on last year’s event. They continued to come in while Rotarians were stacking books category by category on trestle tables and they’ll continue to flood in during the weeklong event, he said. “We’ve had a tremendous flow of material this year and the quality has been very good but the numbers have meant we’ve had to be pretty ruthless on quality.” Books that don’t make the cut are recycled. This year for the first time the impact of technology was apparent, with large numbers of dictionaries being cleared from bookshelves.

Trucks hits house A truck has crashed into a house in Pye’s Pa, Tauranga. The truck appears to have come off a work site and rolled into the house. Police weren’t immediately available to comment, but a witness said no one was injured in the crash. - NZME

amount of money is raised for charity, he said. This year there is a large military history collection on offer along with several very old volumes of Punch magazine. “We’ve certainly got the quality this year, all we need now is the buyers to come in and take it all away,” Mr Holland said. With the second-hand book market remaining relatively

static, Bookarama prices had not risen for several years, and this year some would be dropping, he said. “We do rely on the dealers to take a significant amount away and we send a circular out to all dealers around the South Island telling them what we’ve got.” Bookarama opens at 8am on Monday and runs until noon on Saturday.

Two men have died after a sudden turn in the weather caused waves to swamp their kayaks, tipping them into the icy cold water in Lake Tekapo yesterday. The pair, believed to be visiting from overseas, were part of an elevenmember group that had gone out onto the lake. The remaining nine were pulled from the water alive and were treated for hypothermia - two were sent to Timaru hospital, via ambulance, in a serious condition. Mid-South Canterbury Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin says when the group first went out the weather was calm. But he says they were hit by a north westerly at speeds of around 40k/hr. - NZME

Staffed care homes proposed By Caitlin Porter

Setting up staffed care homes could ensure the country’s most vulnerable children were looked after, says a former Ashburton Child, Youth and Family (CYF) social worker. Jill Ross, who was also an emergency foster mother, was responding to an interim report released yesterday by Social Development Minister Anne Tolley. The report, from an independ-

ent expert panel, showed the CYF system was not delivering effectively for vulnerable children and young people, and as a result transformational change was required. Mrs Ross said the system needs a child centre approach with a shift away from multiple short-term placements. “Foster care is fraught with difficulties for children and young people as well as the caregivers,” she said. When a child goes into care,

they are first placed with a family short-term while things are assessed, she said. A longer term home must then be sought out, and sometimes short-term placements can be extended. However, often that doesn’t work. “Therefore you get a number of placements over the years and children go from place to place ... after two or three placements they have lost their ability to fit in,” Mrs Ross said.

To avoid being bounced around the system, children could instead be looked after in staffed homes, she said. Mrs Ross said there used to be a lot more care available for young people with short-term spells and institutions, but they all closed down in the late 1980s. “[The intention was] for all care being provided in the community, well that hasn’t happened.” To ensure children don’t get lost in the system a stable home

- something between institutions and the girls’ and boys’ homes of old - could be investigated, she said. “At times when children are too disturbed for foster parents to manage it’s very hard to find placements and you need a staffed situation.” It could also aid in families being kept together. “[If] kids could keep the bond with their siblings that would be much better, but that doesn’t happen – it’s too hard.”

Schools come together to celebrate For just the second time since their merger in 2001, pupils from both Ashburton Borough School and its Lagmhor site came together at Lagmhor for a milestone event. Yesterday marked the opening of the site’s new tennis court, scooter track and building renovation. As well as the tennis court and scooter track, which were the result of a dedicated fundraising effort, many of the site’s buildings were renovated and upgraded recently. The completion of the projects was marked with a celebration involving the whole school, as well as Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew and Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay, yesterday afternoon. Making the most of the sunny skies, hundreds of staff, students and invited guests watched as the school’s kapahaka group gave a rousing performance to kick off the ceremony. That was followed by performances by both the Lagmhor pupils and the school choir. Ashburton Borough School board of trustees chairman David Harford said the Lagmhor site was an integral part of the school, and he congratulated the Lagmhor committee on its dedication to getting the projects finished.

New hub takes shape The former Work and Income New Zealand building is being refurbished for Ashburton’s Community House. The Guardian’s Caitlin Porter sat down with Kathryn Barr and John Driscoll to chat about renovations, tenants and the community’s ongoing support.

t’s been nearly five years in the making, but Ashburton’s Community House is only months away from opening its doors. The Ashburton Community House Trust raised the last of the $1.6 million needed to buy and refurbish the former Work and Income New Zealand building on Cass Street, ensuring a a positive future for a building with a tragic past. A final $500,000 grant from the Community Lotteries Facilities sealed the deal. The process was kickstarted by a $500,000 grant from the Ashburton District Council but other money from the Ashburton Trust Lion Foundation, the Mid South Canterbury Community Trust, Mackenzie Charitable Trust and Lochead Trust was also pooled, as well as a number of small donations. Now the money is in the bank, the refurbishment of the building is ploughing ahead. Trust board chair John Driscoll said the interior and exterior of the former Winz building look remarkably different. Earlier this year the renovation of the building was awarded to local firm JKF Homes and director Geoff Frew has taken on the role of project manager. “He’s been great to work with, he’s so community minded,” Mr Driscoll said. “We are quite excited.” While a lot was being renovated, the building was not being fully revamped. Some areas, including the staff room and amenities, will remain intact, and the heating system is being left as is, Mr Driscoll said. “The ultimate aim is getting it decorated and up and running. It is a community hub for Ashburton and it is really for the community.” The new building will boast permanent and temporary offices, a staff room and two meeting rooms – one of which is set to be kitted out with the latest technologies including an interactive whiteboard and data projector thanks to the Rotary Club of Ashburton. The anchor tenant for the building is Safer Ashburton but already 11 other permanent tenants have signed on, as have a handful of temporary tenants. However, six spare office spaces are still available for lease. Mr Driscoll said he always knew interest would be high, as

Community House’s last premises hosted nearly 30 tenants. While the interest is there it will be a while yet before tenants can move in, Mr Driscoll said. The projected completion date for the building is mid to late March. Not only is the interior getting a facelift, the exterior will also be modernised. Its primary feature will be a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Winz tragedy; it will be located on the Cass Street side of the building. With the building work on track, Community House manager Kathryn Barr said some of the finer details can now be finalised, including working out phone and data systems. Both Mr Driscoll and Ms Barr said support from the community throughout the process of moving has been overwhelming. “We have had so much support, from both Rotary clubs and Lions clubs with raffles, a golf tournament and Boulevard Day,” Mr Driscoll said. “We can’t thank the community enough for what they have done.”

Jeweller taps into immigrants’ journeys By Sue NewmaN

The very personal stories of New Zealanders caught between two cultures formed the inspiration for contemporary jeweller Johanna Zellmer’s exhibition Forged, opening at the Ashburton Art Gallery today. As a German citizen who had lived in New Zealand for 15 years, Zellmer found herself questioning her reasons for continuing to remain a resident in her new country rather than throwing away her German passport and becoming a New Zealand citizen. If she was grappling with this issue she knew there would be other new, New Zealanders dealing with the same question. She went looking and was overwhelmed by the number of

people wanting to share their stories and their reasons. And those stories became the catalyst for a new range of work that would see her create very personal items of jewellery that would be worn by just one person, the holder of the passport number punched into its heart. Her exhibition Forged is an exhibition in two parts. In one she has taken coins, flattened these and created intricate landscapes. Each piece is mounted in a display box. The piece de resistance, however, are the multiple human passport works. Each tells the story of an immigrant who has held onto their culture and nationality in their new country. Zellmer has listened to their stories and

then retold those stories by creating a single ear ring from a coin and hearing aid tube. The ear ring appears as ‘brand’ on each neck and that, Zellmer said is symbolic of a nation’s branding. “This has been quite an emotional project for me. Often these people told me very personal stories about their experiences. They felt no one had listened to them before, no one had ever wanted to know,” she said. She has published a book that will be for sale during the exhibition. This book tells the stories of the individuals who are part of the exhibition. Zellmer trained as a jeweller in Germany but with her apprenticeship behind her decided

to push her boundaries beyond the tradition of bending over a bench working on small pieces of adornment. She continued to study, training as a silversmith and working with larger items such as utensils and plates. In 2000 she moved to New Zealand, taking up a position at the Dunedin School of Art and began working again on smaller pieces of jewellery. Forged has been funded by the Otago Polytechnic and at the end of its touring exhibition, the ear rings will become the property of each individual portrayed. Forged opens at the Ashburton Art Gallery today at 2pm and the opening will feature readings by Zellmer from her book.

Two people have been charged after a standoff with police at a meth lab bust in Auckland yesterday. The stand-off ensued when armed police stormed the home on Gowing Drive, Meadowbank, about 5.30am. Inspector Tony Wakelin said neighbouring properties were evacuated and the street closed off as a “small number” of armed police and other staff entered the house to execute a search warrant. A man barricaded himself inside and tried to set fire to chemicals on the premises. Mr Wakelin said it was a volatile and dangerous situation but police were able to resolve it. “Considering that this lab is right in the middle of a residential area, the dangers of their actions are unable to be described.” - NZME

Relief at Fonterra’s increased payout to dairy farmers is being overshadowed by anger at the 18 per cent increase in the chief executive’s salary. At the same time as the giant milk co-operative announced a 750 staff lay-off, it emerged Theo Spierings had been given a substantial pay increase. During the 2013/14 season, Mr Spierings received between $4.17-$4.18 million but that had risen to between $4.93-$4.94 million for the year ending July 31. The salary announcement was met with a maelstrom of reactions from suppliers both for and against the increase. Locally, Ashburton Forks dairy farmer Graham Lowe was not impressed. “I thought it was ironic that you can get an 18 per cent pay rise when the payout is $8.50, but when it goes down it’s not their fault.” Fonterra claims successes but no-one accepts failures, he said. Although relieved by the increase in payout Mr Lowe believed Fonterra still had a way to go, particularly when it came to dealing with governance issues. The increase from $3.85 to $4.65 per kilogram milksolids would still not enable Mr Lowe to break even at his production cost of $5.60 but he was now hopeful he might break even by the end of the season. Timaru Track dairy farmer Peter Ormsby did not have a problem with Mr Spierings’ salary increase. “In my view you have to have good people and to get them you have to pay them well.” Mr Ormsby said the payout increase was “really good news for us” and would enable him to come close to breaking even with his 9000 herd. When compared to smaller Australian dairy companies, Mr Spiering’s salary was not vast. Bega Cheese CEO Aidan Coleman receives $1.4 million on total revenue of $1.1 billion while Warrnambool Cheese and Butter CEO David Lord was paid $2.2 million on total revenue of $454 million.

Boy faces further surgery By Jimmy Ellingham The 10-year-old boy struck in the head by an electric fence post at his Invercargill school remains paralysed down one side and faces further brain surgery. The family of Kade Phillips yesterday released an update on his condition, a week after an incident at Sacred Heart School. Kade was taken initially to Southland Hospital and then

transferred to Dunedin, where he remains. There are plans to move him to Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. Kade’s grandfather, the family spokesman, said relatives remained at the boy’s side. “Kade’s a very sick boy with a long, tough road ahead of him. He has to date lost all movement and feeling in his right-hand side. He has an operation in the next 10 to 12 days to replace a huge piece of skull, once the

brain has reduced to its normal size. He has lost the muscle movement needed to swallow.” Kade is being fed from a tube but his grandfather said he can talk and has not lost his memory. New agency set up for Chch rebuild A new Christchurch rebuild agency has been launched to oversee the multi-billion redevelopment of the earthquakeravaged city centre and red zones. Regenerate Christchurch is a joint entity between the Government and Christchurch City Council designed to drive the city’s $40 billion rebuild. Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee and Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel yesterday outlined the plans for Canterbury’s postCERA structures. Its functions are likely to include developing plans to assist with regeneration, monitoring regeneration outcomes and interventions, “facilitating seamless investor experience”, and providing independent advice to council and the minister. An independent board will ensure it will be managed in a completely different way to the current entities, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and the Christchurch City Council, they said. After five years, the organisation will transfer to the city as a fully Council Controlled Organisation (CCO). Ms Dalziel said the new entity is a first for New Zealand and can provide a new model for Crown and council collaboration beyond Christchurch. The move was welcomed by Labour’s Canterbury Earthquake Recovery spokeswoman, Ruth Dyson.

lancing at my watch, my knees start to shake as I see the time change to 9:58am. In two minutes all the study, prep and long nights will be over. It has all come down to this. What makes all senior students get so stressed, nervous and sleep deprived? One word. Examinations. The whole year has come down to the three hours spent in a room so silent you could hear a pin drop. For junior students it’s hard to understand why all the

stress and worry over a little test. A little test? Are you kidding? It’s the most important thing for university, endorsements, and, oh maybe a little thing called PASSING. Senior students are constantly bombarded with advice on how to study more efficiently and it can all get a bit confusing separating the truth from the myths. I think the hardest part of studying is actually just starting. Once you are started and into it, it isn’t so bad, but actually getting off the couch or off your phone (or even both)

seems to be the most difficult thing. But I get it, taking two steps to your desk is a lot more difficult than it sounds - I know. The most important advice most students are given time and time again is planning. With a solid study timetable even the most stressed student is able to keep up to date. Study timetables for every month are a really good idea to keep up to a routine. There are numerous websites such as StudyIt (http://www.studyit. org.nz/studyandexam/) which has a study timetable template and other helpful study tips. Another good website is

Academic Tips (http://www. academictips.org/acad/index. html) which has useful study techniques for coping with exams. To quote Benjamin Franklin “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Ashburton College NCEA coordinator Mary Buckland says that one of the most important things to remember is to check when you have an exam. “Every year we have students miss exams because they got the day wrong, or else they turn up in the afternoon for their morning exam. A WASTE OF $26M By ElisaBEth Bramhall Why do young people not get a say about the New Zealand flag? Is it because we are young and under the age to vote? Or is it because they think that this won’t affect us as young people? I remember being little and having our New Zealand flag hanging in my classroom. New Zealand’s flag has been around for so many years, and now they want to change it and have a new one around for the next 50-100 years. However, some New Zealanders have grown an

attachment to the flag and are proud of it – including many young people. The flag represents New Zealand’s history and give it its symbolic and emotional value rather than just being a design. For example, when New Zealand wins a medal at the Olympics or at any event New Zealand participates in, we are well known for the flag that hangs behind us. Many New Zealanders have also fought and died under our current flag during battles. People are saying that the New Zealand flag is too similar to Australia’s

In April the New Zealand Herald did a survey that asked people in New Zealand what they wanted to happen with our flag. Overwhelmingly, 70 per cent of New Zealanders disagreed with having our flag changed, while 25 per cent agreed to having it changed and 5 per cent were undecided. Right class, I want this essay finished by tomorrow.” That must be one of the most used phrases in an English teacher’s career. As students we think “tomorrow? You’ve got to be kidding right? I mean, don’t they realise what I’ve got to do tonight?” Truth is, they don’t. Taking six subjects and having exams is enough to worry about - throw in everyone’s extra-curricular activities and

you’re not left with many hours. Personally, I’m heavily involved in theatre. You name the latest show that’s on, and I can almost guarantee that I’m involved with it either on or off the stage. The event centre has practically been my second home since it opened in 2008! That aside, there’s singing lessons, rehearsals, dance lessons, school leadership roles, and of course, work. So when my English teacher turns to me and says “I want this essay finished by tomor-

row”, instead of complaining and making the situation worse, I simply say “I’ll do my best”. Ashburton College student Nicole Johnson says teachers always say ‘balance your life’, but then expected students to finish something in just a few days. “They don’t realise that some things take time for a good grade, and you don’t always have that time,” she said. Another student, Katie Hill, made the point that all teachers think their subject is a priority, whereas in reality everything is

equally important. “Everything I do, I like to do it to a high standard, and with a busy life teachers don’t always understand,” she said. “I feel they forget with the amount of students they teach, just as us students are quick to comment on how long teachers take to mark something you stayed up all night doing to finish on time.” Of course, my mum has always had this rule that school work comes first, and I always try to stick to that because

otherwise due dates just become a calendar full of extensions, resubs, and sleepless nights. Speaking of sleepless nights, adolescents need around 9-9½ hours of sleep each night. Can you guess what the average is? Seven. Just seven hours. During show week, I’m lucky to scrape at least six some nights. However I know I’m not the only teenager on the planet with a busy schedule, so here’s take some advice from other busy students to help you make it through.

Stampede kills 717 A huge stampede has killed at least 717 people and injured at least 863 more at the hajj in Saudi Arabia in one of the worst-ever tragedies at the annual Muslim pilgrimage. The stampede, the second deadly accident to hit the pilgrims this month following a crane collapse in Mecca, broke out in Mina yesterday during the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual, the Saudi civil defence service said. Bodies could be seen in piles, surrounded by discarded personal belongings and flattened water bottles. In some areas rescue workers laid bodies in long rows on stretchers, limbs protruding from beneath white sheets. The civil defence service said it was still counting the dead, who included pilgrims from different countries, and that at least 863 people had also been hurt. Nearly two million people

France says it is willing to pay 80 million euros ($NZ141 million) to acquire one of two Rembrandt paintings being sold by the Rothschild family for the Louvre museum. The two full-length portraits of a young couple painted shortly before their wedding in 1634 have been owned by the wealthy Rothschild banking family since the mid-19th century and have rarely been seen in public. Four dead in bus smash A school bus carrying international students has collided with a tour vehicle in the city of Seattle, killing at least four and critically injuring 15 others, officials said. Images of the fiery accident on a busy bridge showed extensive damage to the left side of the bus, part of which was completely sheared off by the force of the crash. Melissa Mixon, spokeswoman for North Seattle College, said 45 students and staff with the school’s international programme were on board the bus. She could not immediately provide information on the nationality or age of the victims. Local news reports said the four killed were all students. College president Warren Brown said the students were going to visit Safeco Field, a sports stadium, as part of their

orientation programme. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said authorities were assisting families of the victims who were flying into Seattle from several countries. “The accident occurred when a charter bus travelling with the students collided with a ‘Ride the Ducks’ tour vehicle,” Mixon said. The college hosts some 1000 international students from 50 countries, including China, Korea and Japan, according to its website. The school year is scheduled to begin on Monday. INVESTOR CRACKDOWN ■ New rules to take effect from next Thursday: ■ Residential property investors in Auckland using bank loans must have deposits of at least 30 per cent. ■ The existing “speed limit” for high LVR borrowing outside Auckland increases from 10 per cent to 15 per cent to reﬂect the more subdued provincial housing market conditions. ■ Existing 10 per cent speed limit for loans to owner-occupiers in Auckland at LVRs of greater than 80 per cent retained. ■ All buyers must have a New Zealand bank account and IRD number which will help track the number of overseas purchasers. ■ Quick-ﬂick tax being introduced to tax capital gain on any investment property bought and sold within two years. and it was important to look at increases in the number of first home buyers borrowing for a mortgage. That number had increased to nearly 2000 in the month of August, a jump of more than 50 per cent when compared to August last year. “That’s on top of borrowing by more than 22,000 other owner occupiers in August. Taken together, the number of first home buyers and owner occupiers - 24,400 - is much higher than the 5600 investors.” This week the Herald reported that auction clearance rates in Auckland had dropped, together with attendance rates, with experts attributing the turn to investors pulling out of the market because of the new rules.

One mortgage broker said landlords lost their appetite for Auckland from about July when most banks implemented the 30 per cent deposit restrictions. The Taxation (Bright-line Test for Residential Land) Bill, due to take effect from October, arose from the 2015 Budget and was one of several measures designed to quell the Auckland property market. It would tax capital gain on any investment property bought and sold within two years, but has been criticised by the NZ Law Society and others, who say speculators will change their behaviour, and the measures will net the wrong people, such as those forced to sell their properties for reasons such as illness or redundancy. - NZME

Investors took out nearly $2 billion in mortgages in a month, the latest statistics show - 33 per cent of all new lending. The Reserve Bank figures for new national residential mortgage lending show that investors accounted for $1.989 billion of lending in August, up from $1.167 billion the previous year. All borrowing amounted to $5.94 billion, including $624 million lent to first home buyers, and $3.251 billion to other owner occupiers. The figures come as new restrictions targeting investors come into effect next week. The Reserve Bank rules will require 30 per cent deposits for Auckland landlords. There will also be a tax on capital gain on any investment property bought and sold within two years. Labour housing spokesman Phil Twyford said the Reserve Bank figures showed Auckland remained “a speculator’s paradise”. “This follows analysis by Quotable Value finding more than 40 per cent of properties in Auckland are being sold to investors.” Mr Twyford said National had tinkered around the edges, including its so-called “bright line” tax, when what was needed was a massive, state-backed building programme. Mike Pero probably wouldn’t, even though the mortgage business that still bears his name is now fighting with several former franchisees. “There’s not too many brands that are in this situation, where the founder has sold the rights to the name,” said the 55-yearold, who set up Mike Pero Mortgages in 1991. “At times I get frustrated to think that someone has control almost of my identity,” he said. “The general public do get confused that Mike Pero is a brand and is owned by an Australian company.” That company is Liberty Financial, founded and managed by American-born businessman Sherman Ma. It bought into Mike Pero Mortgages in 2006 and took full control of it in 2013 from the beleaguered NZF Group.

Ellis Buchanan is feeling the benefits of masters’ swimming after returning to the group last month for the first time since 1988. Mr Buchanan swims at least twice a week and at 88 years old, was the oldest competitor at the South Island Short Course Championships at the EA Networks Centre last week. set for yourself.” The South Island Short Course Championships attracted more than 80 masters’ swimmers last week, and, despite being the only participant in the 85-89 age group, Mr Buchanan received a medal at the awards presentation at the Ashburton Hotel. “Afterwards we went out to dinner at the hotel where the presentations were made. “It was great, when each of the names were called out you got your medals, the applause was great, it’s so supportive and friendly” he said. Mr Buchanan credited the masters’ group for renewing his interest in swimming, and hopes to compete at masters’ events in other parts of the country in the near future. “It’s renewed my interest in swimming and I enjoy the at-

mosphere of the whole complex. “It’s great, it’s nice to get out and do something you enjoy,” he said. “I’ve found with the masters’ group that they’re all very encouraging. “It’s available to anybody who wants to belong to it and I find that it maintains my physical fitness.” Masters’ swimming committee member Steve Prescott, who will compete at the North Island Short Course Championships in Levin next month, said the group is open to all and encouraged any interested swimmers to attend the masters’ swim sessions on Saturday from 5pm to 6pm or Sunday from 8am to 9am. World Cup success leads to big rise in registrations The true legacy of the Black Caps’ world cup success last summer is being realised with a record spike in youngsters signing up to play this season. Auckland cricket clubs are reporting unprecedented rises in registrations ahead of the 2015/16 season.

As the forecast long, hot summer draws closer, some clubs are experiencing a 20 to 30 per cent jump in registrations, especially in the junior ranks. Auckland Cricket community cricket manager Adrian Dale said the “huge boost” was down to the fact New Zealand had co-

Following a successful inaugural tournament last year, New Zealand Rugby has made the competition a permanent fixture to develop emerging talent like

Smith fires up at critics By James MacSmith Skipper Cameron Smith has lashed out at critics of Melbourne’s playing style ahead of tonight’s NRL preliminary final with North Queensland, labelling such attacks as “laughable”. The Storm’s go-slow ‘wrestling’ tactics have again come under scrutiny following their qualifying final win over Sydney Roosters two weeks ago. Roosters coach Trent Robinson said he was surprised with what the Storm were allowed to get away with by the referees, and his Brisbane counterpart Wayne Bennett chimed in saying Melbourne’s approach to rugby league was boring. But Smith was on the front foot yesterday as his team eyes a sixth grand final appearance in 10 seasons, saying Melbourne make no apologies for the way they play. “There is a lot of confidence within our squad at the moment and we have found a pretty good formula with our game plan and the way we are playing,” Smith said. “A lot of people have labelled it quite boring but I can assure you winning football matches isn’t boring. “We are just confident on what

Consistent Smith shows way By Patrick Mckendry To paraphrase the old saying, there are few certainties in life apart from death, taxes and a good performance from All Black Ben Smith. Smith, like the rest of his teammates, was frustrated at the stopstart nature of the match against Namibia which allowed the tier two nation to control the pace of the game and marshal a tiring defence, but he, just about more than anyone, took full advantage of the space that was available. Coming on at fullback in the 52nd minute once Colin Slade went off with a tight hamstring, Smith was quickly at his best with the ball - especially in broken play where he must rate as one of the best runners in the game. It is a comfort for the All Blacks selectors to know what they will get from him, no matter the importance of the game, and that’s why he has become one of the first names on the team sheet for a big test.

There will be much bigger tests to come for the All Blacks in the near future, but whereas some of his team-mates ran into contact and pushed needless passes, Smith played in his usual heads-up style which reaped benefits for himself and his team. Despite being on the field for only 28 minutes, he carried the ball five times for 46m, beat five defenders and scored a try. He paid credit to Namibia’s defence for limiting the All Blacks to nine tries in the 58-14 victory. “They did really well at reading our play and shutting down from the outside. A couple of times when we got phases together we looked a lot better so that’s probably our work-on - to be a bit more patient and the opportunities will come. “We have to try to get some fluidity in our game so we can put teams under pressure.” Another who impressed was right wing Nehe Milner-Skudder. Mid Canterbury Animal Shelter is a non-proﬁt organisation, a small group of volunteers who foster and care for animals Mid Canterbury Animal Shelter takes into care animals orphaned and abandoned in our community. All shelter animals available for adoption are vet checked, flea and wormed, and get desexed through the shelter. Dogs are micro-chipped, de-sexed, vaccinated and registered prior to

re-homing. We always provide the best shelter, food and environmental enrichment possible, giving 110% to all animals in care. We are not funded by council or government agencies, we depend on donations and fund raising to finance the daily care of the animals.

Aussie’s Kiwi crims not wanted Stu Oldham

ew Zealand’s special relationship with Australia is far too valuable to be used to challenge the detaining and eventual deportation of Aussie’s Kiwi criminals. But it is being invoked in calls for the government to make “forceful representations” about New Zealanders being held at the Christmas Island immigration centre. Dozens have reportedly been sent there from mainland Australia under a new policy that lets the federal government revoke the visas of foreigners who have served more than a year in prison. By late yesterday, there were claims many of the potential deportees were taken from established, Australia-born families and from lives where Australia was their preferred home. It was also claimed many of these New Zealand passport holders are as-near-to Australian as possible without being a citizen and that deportation will violate their human rights. Back here, some politicians have decried a policy that treats New Zealanders the same as other overstayers and have said Australians in a similar situation would be treated better, here. It is not the way mates treat mates, they said, especially when mates have open borders and an enduring and close relationship underpinned by decades of hard-won mutual benefits. All this makes for marvellous, emotive soundbites but it exaggerates what New Zealanders should expect from a sovereign country that just happens to be a very close friend. Australia is entitled to decide how it should apply its laws. A law to get rid of miscreant foreigners might be a sop to voters but that is how domestic politics – and countries – work. There may be concern for those affected but the call to get tough with the Aussies is still a call for a mate to ask a mate to give special treatment to people who abused a privilege. That is not how a relationship built on mutual benefits is fostered and it would not wash if it happened here.

It is the only gym I have ever really enjoyed and that has actually improved my fitness and strength.
