By the end of today, the fight to reopen Ashburton’s closed-for-business i-SITE will be won or lost.

While Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) has opted to close the centre and redirect the money to fund it into other areas of district promotion, the people of Ashburton are not happy.

A petition calling for the centre to remain open was presented to council last month and a rally will be held at 12.15pm today that organisers hope will show the depth of community concern.

But what happens next will be in the hands of 12 district councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

Discussion on the petition is on today’s council agenda along with the six-monthly report by EMC’s board and general manager Bruce Moffat.

What is unclear is whether any councillors will show at the rally because its timing clashes with a previously planned meeting with the board of Ashburton Contracting.

Given a choice, Favel said, the rally is something she would attend, but the ACL annual meeting was an impor-

tant one for her and her councillors. It’s scheduled to start at 11.30am.

“I looked back at last year’s minutes and the meeting took 40 minutes.

If that’s the case we’ll be finished by 12.10pm,” she said.

That indicates, time willing, Favel at least, will front up at the rally.

In terms of the petition, there were no guarantees as to how councillors would opt to deal with this, Favel said.

D-Day in fight to save i-SITE

Log jam of log fire replacement consents

Homeowners have just four working days to do the paperwork if they want to replace their log fire with the fire of their choice.

At 5pm on Tuesday they will be out of time to have consents lodged for replacement logburners. Environment Canterbury’s deadline has been widely publicised but with just days to go the flood of consents has become a torrent as homeowners hope to avoid tough new logburner requirements that take low emission burners off the table, making the more expensive ultra-low emission burners the only replacement option.

And that’s creating a massive workload for both council staff and for logburner retailers, said

council building services manager Michael Wong.

It could take the rest of this year before the last of those logburner consents is cleared from the Ashburton District Council consent staff in-trays.

“We’re absolutely flat tack.

We’ve done 490 for the year so far and that compares with 360 at the same time last year. This month alone we’ve issued 118 consents and there’s a queue of 74 waiting to be done,” Wong said.

Consents were being filed at the rate of around 20 a day and it was likely to take until Christmas for all of these to be issued, he said.

‘We’re anticipating we’ll have more than 100 in the queue by 5pm on Tuesday.”

After several years of encour-

aging homeowners to replace log burners older than 15 years of age with low emission burners, ECan opted to put a stake in the ground and require all consents for replacements to be lodged by 5pm, October 31.

And that will be an absolute cut-off, no leeway, Wong said.

“It’s ECan’s rule, but we’ll be the people at the counter who have to say no, sorry, you’ve missed the deadline.” He’s anticipating there will be more than a few unhappy homeowners.

Once a consent is issued it must be activated within a year and the new logburner installed.

The installation process will also come with a huge workload for the council as each will need to be signed off by a council inspector.

If there’s a mountain of work

in the council’s building department there’s a mountain of equal size with logburner retailers.

Laser owner Megan Christie said consent preparation and fire sales currently involved two fulltime and one part-time staff member.

“We’ll be working until the last minute on the 31st to make sure we get them all lodged,” she said.

And the flood of requests for fires was having a flow-on effect with manufacturers.

“Some have already run out of some models this year and even though they’ve been predicting demand for the next 12 months, supply is going to be the big thing,” Christie said.

Once the October 31 deadline passed installation would need to become a carefully planned exercise.

Karen McIntyre’s 1000 signature petition asked the council to keep the i-SITE open.

A staff recommendation to today’s council meeting says only that the report should be received and the submitter’s concerns acknowledged.

Favel hasn’t ruled out the council stepping in and requesting the i-SITE reopen.

With EMC to report to councillors later in the meeting, any discussion on the petition could be held over until this presentation, she said.

“Personally I’d like to hear from Bruce before we make any decisions.”

If new evidence is presented the council is able to overturn earlier decisions.

The Methven site has been retained but there has been a staff restructure at the cost of at least one full-time position.

Today’s rally will be held on the East Street chessboard at 12.15pm. The council is scheduled to meet at 1pm in the Baring Square East council chamber.

Troops head off to Iraq New Zealand Defence Force troops are training in Australia, before they head to Iraq on deployment.

This is the sixth rotation of 108 NZDF troops headed to Iraq, who left on Wednesday for Australia to complete training in Queensland.

Library to become tourist hub

As one information highway closes another is opening hot on its heels.

The doors of Ashburton’s i-SITE have been closed for several weeks as Experience Mid Canterbury worked through the process of consulting staff.

The closure is now confirmed, but EMC has plans in the wings that will keep an information channel open for visitors.

A satellite information presence is set to open in the Ashburton Library on Havelock Street and brochures will be moved into this new information base later this week.

The move is part of an i-SITE restructure made by EMC as part of its review of the viability of i-SITEs in Mid Canterbury.

While Ashburton will close, a decision was made to keep the Methven i-SITE open for business.

Board chairman James Urquhart said a number of options were put forward when it came to providing access to information about the district.

“We also looked at the current

trends on tourism and tourists accessing information, and wanted to adapt to that without costing the ratepayer,” he said.

Discussions were held with EMC’s funder, the Ashburton District Council and with the Ashburton Library and both were happy for the library to house local information brochures. That’s a great solution, Urquhart said.

“At the same time, our new mobile website has been completed which will make information for visitors much easier to access.”

With the library facility established, visitors to the district would be able to find information in multiple ways, including visiting the new site via the free wifi in the library, he said.

“We are working through the final details of the plan with the library and council now.”

Ashburton residents without internet access will still be able to book transport such as Intercity, Atomic Shuttles, 24 Seven Shuttles, Transcenic, and Interislander through Methven i-SITE or by visiting House of Travel Ashburton, 196 East Street.

Fun day for pets at Fairton School

The visitors trekking through the Fairton School gate yesterday came in all shapes, sizes and breeds.

The school celebrated its annual pet day yesterday after-

noon, with students bringing their favourite four-legged companions along.

This year’s crowd included lambs, calves, dogs, pigs, a cat, a goat, a rabbit and a mouse.

Throughout the afternoon a number of competitions took

place, including hobby-horse riding, a lamb-drinking competition, calf-drinking competition and dog agility races.

Students had also been working on their own fruit creations, Lego buildings, farms and artwork for the show.

District’s jobseeker numbers falling

Jobseeker numbers in the Ashburton District remained very low for the September quarter, falling 1.6 per cent from the same period last year.

At September 30, 413 people were registered as looking for work; last year the number sat at 430. Over the past five September quarters, jobseeker numbers have

fluctuated from a low of 312 in 2014 and peaking last year.

The total number of people receiving a benefit in the district also dropped from 1150 to 1113.

The number of youth (18 to 24) receiving a benefit of any kind was 159 for the September quarter.

People aged 25 to 39 were the most highly represented in the beneficiary statistics at 366.

More than two thirds of ben-

eficiaries, 798, had been on the Ministry of Social Development’s books for more than one year.

Sole parent support recipient numbers is at a five-year low, 268.

The five-year peak occurred in 2013 at 318.

Supported living payment recipients, however, hit a five-year high for the September quarter this year at 417.

The Ashburton District’s popu-

lation now sits at 34,100 and its jobseeker numbers are significantly lower than local authority areas with a similar population base.

Matamata-Piako with 34,700 people has 732 jobseekers, Southland, 31,100 has 478, Whakatane, 35,500, has 1695 and Taupo, 26,800 has 811.

The Timaru District’s population sits at 47,100 but its jobseeker

numbers are more than double Ashburton’s at 874 Queenstown–Lakes has the record for low numbers; with a population of 31,100 it has just 91 people registered as looking for work. It has the lowest number of registered jobseekers of any area in New Zealand behind Mackenzie, with a population of just 1650 where jobseeker numbers total 25.

Skydiving for a good cause

When the Canterbury-West Coast Cancer Society approached Skydiving Kiwis for support last year, a uniquely adrenalinefilled fundraiser was born.

Mid Cantabrians will once again have the opportunity to hurl themselves from 13,000 feet in support of locals living with cancer.

On November 25, participants who have reached a fundraising goal of $800 will take the plunge.

Sophie-Claire Violette of Skydiving Kiwis said the event successfully attracted 10 brave jumpers last year, raising $9000 for the Cancer Society.

One was Dougal from Timaru who held a fundraising breakfast to raise the money.

“I thought I would give it a go,” he said.

“I could see for miles in every direction … it was an amazing experience and being able to raise money for the Cancer Society made it even better.”

This year’s fundraiser involves a slightly higher jump and has already attracted four fundraisers.

Cancer Society Canterbury-West Coast chief executive Elizabeth Chesterman said the funds will be used by the Cancer Society to continue its free services throughout the region.

“Over the past year the Cancer Society’s volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly in supporting local people diagnosed with cancer and their families,” she said.

“To ensure that we can continue to advocate and support those people, we are reliant on events like Jump for Cancer to raise the much-needed funds.”

Foundation hands out nearly $2 million in grants

Over the past year the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation has made almost $2 million in grants to community causes.

Those grants include the building of a new Acute Admission Unit and the establishment of the Rural Health Academic Centre at the hospital. Other significant donations were made to 28 scholarships, the BOOST child literacy programme, Ashburton Collage Kohanga, bowel cancer research, water research and funding an anti-violence counsellor.

The $1,901,716 given away over the year was generated from the $10 million-plus the foundation now has invested in funds.

It has an additional $2.7 million that will come in bequests over the coming years.

Funds from donors within the community are invested and the income is used in its grants programme.

On November 2 the foundation will celebrate its work over the past year at an event at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre with a line-up of speakers including Professor Bridget Robinson, clinical director Macken-

zie Cancer Research Group, chairwoman of Canterbury Comprehensive Cancer Centre and medical oncologist who will give an update on the cancer research funded by the foundation.

Principal of Ashburton College Ross Preece will report on the success of the Kohanga or “nest” facility which is an experimental classroom for troubled youth at the college.

The keynote speaker will be Sir Stephen Tindall who founded The Warehouse and then, with his wife Margaret, founded The Tindall Foundation – a philanthropic organisation which has donated over $135 million to projects in New Zealand since 1994.

In telling his personal story Sir Tindall will describe some of the projects he has supported such as helping Team New Zealand to bring home the America’s Cup. Christchurch Airport is looking to cater for around 12 million passengers by the year 2040, as part of their new vision.

The airport’s future vision for 2040 was released yesterday, with minor runway extensions, pop-up stores, markets, retails and shuttles, all in the plans.

Chief executive Malcolm Johns says Christchurch Airport is the main international gateway to the South Island.

The airport currently caters for 6.3 million passengers, with 24 per cent international visitors, while 76 per cent are domestic.

There are hopes these numbers will nearly double, while close to 111,000

A video on the airport’s website further explains the changes, stating that master planning now will allow aircraft to use all gates with the aim of increasing efficiency and productivity.

The airport reviews its long term planning for land-use and infrastructure every 10 years, and this latest vision shares that thinking, which has been underway for almost two years, Mr Johns said.

“We are conscious that the airport currently underpins the generation of $2.1 billion in regional GDP and creates more than 60,000 jobs,” he said.

Diary to counter racism Football bosses in Italy have announced excerpts of Anne Franks’ diary will be read aloud before matches this weekend.

The move comes after fans of Rome side Lazio displayed shocking displays of anti-Semitism last weekend.

Ultra right-wing supporters littered the Stadio Olimpico, the ground they share with Roma, with images of the young diarist who died in the Holocaust, wearing a jersey of their bitter city rivals Stadium cleaners found the anti-Semitic stickers on Monday and Italian police have opened a criminal inquiry into the case.

The diary passage reading will be combined with a minute’s silence before Serie A, B and C matches plus amateur and youth games over the weekend, to promote Holocaust remembrance.

Racism has been widespread for years in many Italian and European stadiums and measures such as banning fans and forcing teams to play behind closed doors have not solved the problem.

Leading Irish journalist jailed for teen abuse A former leading Irish sports journalist has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for child sex offences.

Former Irish Times reporter Tom Humphries, 54, had admitted abusing a girl under the age of 17.

Judge Karen O’Connor passed sentence on counts of exploitation and defilement in a packed courtroom at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

“It is a truism that the larger the profile or success of a member of society, the greater the fall,” the judge said.

Humphries, who was a volunteer coach of youth Gaelic games teams, was one of the

most well-known sports journalists in Ireland at the time he was committing the offences.

He was renowned for forthright opinion pieces across a range of sports.

His abuse was uncovered by chance, when a family member found incriminating images on an old mobile phone. His family confronted him and called in the Garda.

Humphries sat in the dock with his hand on his face as the judge delivered her sentence.

Humphries exchanged thousands of text messages with the youngster as part of a grooming process.

The girl, whom he knew

through sporting circles, was 14 when he first contacted her.

Many of the messages were sexually explicit and contained graphic images.

A snapshot of analysed messages showed that more than 16,000 texts were exchanged over one three-month period.

When the girl was 16, Humphries took her to his Dublin apartment, where they engaged in sexual activity. He was then 47.

He admitted charges comprising two counts of defilement of a child in Dublin between December 5, 2010 and February 19, 2011, and four counts of inviting a child to

participate in a sexually explicit, obscene or indecent act between January 2010 and March 2011.

Judge O’Connor said the age and status disparity between Humphries and his victim were aggravating factors.

“This was a schoolgirl compared to an eminent, highly respected sports journalist,” she said.

But she said the most important aggravating feature was the impact the abuse had on the girl.

The judge said the injured party had required counselling and was plagued by feelings of self-hatred and guilt.

Robert Guillaume dies Robert Guillaume, who won Emmy Awards for his roles on television’s Soap and Benson, has died aged 89.

Guillaume’s widow said he had been battling prostate cancer. In addition to his television work, Robert Guillaume was the first African-American to sing the title role of Phantom of the Opera, appearing with an all-white cast in Los Angeles.

Guillaume rose to stardom after being born into squalid conditions in the slums of St Louis in November 1927. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1977 for his role in the first all-black version of Guys and Dolls.

Remains to return home Hair-theft bandits terrorise In a solemn ceremony, the state museum of Hanover has returned the mortal remains of an indigenous Australian woman, who died more than 100 years ago, to her descendants.

A German mine leaseholder had taken the deceased woman’s body without permission and placed it in a coffin made of bark before returning to Germany.

In 1909, the man gave the body to the regional museum.

It’s faces that will create the biggest impression and it will take a lot of them.

So many people in this district have expressed their dismay at the closures that it would be a real disappointment if there wasn’t a huge turnout to today’s rally on the checkerboard on East Street.

The hard work of those who have planned the rally will all have been in vain if there isn’t a big turnout.

But most importantly for the people of this region. Today is the chance to show those in power that you won’t just sit by and let things be done without public involvement – especially things of significant local importance.

There is no more powerful force than people power when it comes to things like this and no matter what the outcome, those in charge of making the key decisions will now be all that much more aware of the potential ramifications of their decision making. Which should, in turn, ensure that every possible outcome is seen before a final approval.

Ashburton will today show it is not a district that just rolls over and watches as life goes idly on by.

So, if you are as passionate about the i-SITE closure as it would seem most of the district is, then be at the checkerboard today at 12.15pm.

Show your support to the cause, fight the good fight and, above all else, show that although councillors may sit around the table and sign off on the final decisions, it is the people of this region who have the final say.

Some things are worth holding on to Peter Mac

O

k, I’ll admit it. I’m a little old-fashioned. I believe there are times in life you just can’t beat a bit of good old human interaction. A friendly smile, a helping hand, a nod in the right direction and the conveyance of some personal warmth.

I remember my first reaction walking past the closed i-SITE on East Street a few weeks back.

I was a bit aghast to be fair.

A sick staff member surely wouldn’t close it. Perhaps they were all ill. Maybe it was a late addition red-sticker statistic in the Canterbury post-quake reality. But it’s a relatively new and strong-looking building so that was unlikely. What on earth would plunge the place into darkness and lock the doors?

Turns out, of course, bureaucrats.

Now to be fair, those in positions of decision-making and policy-forming power are often on a hiding to nothing.

They’re usually the first port of call for serial whingers and moaners and, of course, you’re

doing well if you can please most of the people some of the time. But I wouldn’t be alone in reckoning something about this closure, this cessation of service, just doesn’t sit right.

My initial feeling, and I’m trying not to be overly dramatic about this, but my initial feeling was that the CBD had the life sucked out of it.

It really does feel like that. As though the eyes are shut and we are just waiting on the undertaker.

To be absolutely honest, I can’t believe it’s come to this.

I know we have to be fiscally prudent and responsible as a community and there’s never enough for everything we would like to have, but surely this is

near the sharp end of the sacred cow list?

Ashburton is a bit unique in its East Street layout with shops along only one side. It makes us distinctive, I suppose, but because of that it has always struggled to achieve a bustling CBD feel.

When the new i-SITE was built, suddenly there was life “across the road” and it went some way to alleviate that.

With tourism in the ascendant and a great earner for the nation and our district, with heaps more potential to be tapped, surely a five-figure sum annually to maintain an information hub for visitors and a warm welcome to our district is not excessive?

Yes, we need exposure at the overseas trade shows, I guess, but not at the expense of our i-SITE. It’s obvious when reading Tony Todd’s comments on what Oamaru spends, we are definitely pushing prudency towards stingyness.

As the saying goes, you have to spend a dollar to make a dollar. There’s no free ride.

Reading Tony Todd’s well researched letter to the editor in Tuesday’s edition of the Ashburton Guardian, I noted that the Ashburton District benefits from tourists in this area to the tune of $170,000,000.

That’s a huge amount of income for this district’s benefit.

Just a thought: The major recipients of the $170,000,000 could easily fund or support the funding of the operation of an i-SITE between them with a nottoo-large of a contribution.

I’m sure there would be willing volunteers happy to staff the i-SITE. I think Experience Mid Canterbury should be part of the vol-

Swimming pools I was so pleased to read in your paper 21-10-17 that the Ashburton District Council has backed down on tough health and saftey rules that would have kept five rural swimming pools closed this summer.

I look back at summers as a kid

spent at the Homebush School pool and the fun we had.

Not only that but we all learned to swim, not all kids do now, mostly because school pools have closed as it’s too hard to maintain them finacially and adhere to all the health and safety stuff.

Homebush School pool was the hub of our community in summer.

A great place for families to cool off and connect with the neighbours. Everyone took a turn at pool duties and there were a few common-sense rules to keep us safe.

There were no trained lifeguards but there were parents who were responsible and there were kids who were having so much fun!

So well done to the council for helping some families to enjoy summer again!

What I don’t understand is why, when there are generally so many regulations about pools and fences and safety, do we have so many open waterways around that a child could easily drown in?

I’m thinking of Baring Square, the domain and most of the new subdivisions and, worst of all, Mill Creek that runs through Argyle Park and right through town.

It looks so lovely, but it won’t be lovely if a child drowns.

How does the council get away with this when health and safety is everywhere else?

It does not make sense.

Nitrate increases not unexpected

Nitrate levels in the lower Hinds area waterways are up, testing has shown, but that is not unexpected after the recent wet winter, the Ashburton Water Zone Committee heard yesterday.

Adrian Meredith, Environment Canterbury principal surface water scientist, told the meeting that following a winter that featured a number of high intensity rain events, ECan tested nitrate concentrations in a number lowland drains within the area, grouping their findings into four geographical areas: Mayfield Hinds, Hinds River and connected drains, Valetta zone and Eiffelton drains.

The Eiffelton drains showed particularly high nitrate concentrations, Meredith said, with record peak concentrations as high as 22-24mg/L over the winter.

He said these were reflective of groundwater concentrations at or west of State Highway 1, however the springs and drains were now showing a seasonal decrease from that peak.

Nitrate concentrations in the Valetta zone ranged between 1215mg/L, which was an increase from 9-10mg/L prior to 2015, while drains in the Mayfield Hinds area showed a small but sustained nitrate increase, from 9-14mg/L to 13-18 mg/L (April to present), Meredith said.

O’Connor, a former Minister of Rural Affairs, was expected to be named Minister for Primary Industries, given he was opposition spokesman for primary industries prior to the election. With that in mind it was no surprise that he picked up the most heavyweight of the three roles.

ell the political bed is made, what remains to be seen now is just how comfortable it will be for farmers.

While it will probably not be as bad as what was first feared on the campaign trail, there is still the very real likelihood of a few sleepless nights ahead for many.

And maybe a couple of nightmares.

To start with the positives, it’s a no-brainer that the rejection of the proposed water tax is good news, especially in Mid Canterbury, where irrigation plays such an important role in the health of the local economy.

Winston and his New Zealand First colleagues deserve some credit here, as, by the sound of it, kicking that particular idea into touch was one of his nonnegotiables if Labour was to win his party’s support.

Also good news, although the finer points are yet to be released, is a financial commitment to

spend $1 billion a year in regional communities, many of which have been left behind as increasing amounts of money have instead gone towards urban centres like Auckland. It has to be hoped that increased investment in the regions will breathe some new life into what has traditionally been the nation’s heart and soul.

As Federated Farmers’ president Katie Milne noted, it’s an encouraging sign that the new government is taking the role of primary industry in the nation’s future seriously.

Another plus is the announcement that more money will go

towards biosecurity, while small, incremental increases on science R&D spending should also be welcomed, especially as the agricultural sector is still in the process of finding workable new methods of farm-related greenhouse gas mitigation.

The question is, will that investment be enough? Or will it be a case of giving with one hand while taking away with the other?

Which brings us to the negatives.

News that the Greens will hold the climate change portfolio, coupled with the announcement that a major platform of the Labour/ Greens confidence and supply agreement is the establishment of an independent climate commission, which will have the power to bring agricultural emissions under its umbrella, will concern many farmers.

that most farmers would rather we weren’t, especially considering the science is not yet there to support that brave new world.

Irrigation is another area where give and take could be more take than give. Sure, the water tax looks to be gone for now, but the trade-off looks like the removal of government loan funding for future schemes.

Although those already in place will avoid the financial knife, with existing Crown investment to remain, future support in the form of government loans looks likely to go.

It’s that word loan that people seem to misunderstand.

As Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis points out, most of the government money that goes towards irrigation projects is paid back by farmers and growers, with interest.

And then there’s the more immediate elephant in the room.

Immigration.

Or, more specifically, potential cuts to the migrant labour that places like Mid Canterbury rely on.

Again, information on the finer points is lacking, but both coalition partners campaigned on cutting the number of migrants coming into the country and there’s been nothing heard since to suggest any change in that approach.

While I acknowledge that the target of cuts to migrant numbers is Auckland rather than the regions, we’re yet to hear how the new government plans to achieve that goal.

Time will tell just how all this pans out, but it can only be hoped these policies have been thought through – and costed – carefully.

Fletcher Building takes $160m hit

By Jonathan Underhill Fletcher Building has taken a further $125 million provision against problematic construction contracts, including the Convention Centre and the Justice Precinct in Christchurch, and said its B+I unit would report a full-year loss of $160 million, including $35 million of overhead costs.

A trading halt was lifted on Fletcher’s shares following the announcement which follows a review by KPMG. Losses on the Convention Centre and the Justice Precinct accounted for about twothirds of the $292 million loss recorded for B+I in 2017.

The shares fell 5.5 per cent to $7.52 when trading opened on disappointment over the latest earnings downgrade. The stock has fallen 25 per cent this year.

“There is acknowledgment that there is uncertainty with respect to large B+I projects that still have some time to complete,” the company said in a statement. “In recognition of this, Fletcher Building intends to provide regular updates to shareholders on the performance of the B+I business and progress on the key projects. Earn-

ings guidance for the remainder of the group is informed by trading results across all of Fletcher Building’s divisions for the first quarter of FY18, and the current outlook for the remainder of the financial year.”

Excluding the B+I loss, full-year earnings guidance for the rest of the group is $680 million to $720 million, suggesting full-year earnings including B+I could be as low as $520 million.

“I want to offer my personal apology to our shareholders,” chairman Ralph Norris said. “Mistakes have been made and responsibility ultimately rests with the board. As we stated at our full-year results briefings, we fully accept this responsibility.”

Grant Williamson, a director at Hamilton Hindin Greene, said investors are “quietly losing confidence in the company given that they have had a number of writedowns regarding these projects. I think it will take quite a while for confidence to rebuild in the company.”

He noted, however, that the stock is holding near support at $7.50 although the Australian reaction will be key as they are large

Williamson said news there is a new chief executive is a positive and may be one of the reasons the stock hasn’t fallen further.

The company named Ross Taylor as chief executive, starting November 22. Taylor was most recently CEO of UGL, an international engineering, services, construction and product manufacturing business, and was previously CEO of Tenix, a privately-held engineering and construction services company.

Norris said Taylor had “proven experience leading business turnarounds and improving performance and shareholder returns,

and has direct experience across a range of Fletcher Building’s core sectors – including housing, manufacturing and construction.”

At both UGL and Tenex “he returned loss-making businesses to profitability, doubling the UGL share price in two years,” Norris said.

Taylor’s appointment follows the sacking of former chief Mark Adamson amid cost over-runs at major building projects, which Fletcher named for the first time yesterday.

Auckland-based Fletcher downgraded earnings twice last year as escalating construction costs and a lack of oversight on major building projects saw the B+I unit come under pressure. After booking a series of one-time impairment charges Fletcher had said cashflow was set to improve in the 2018 financial year.

The KPMG review covered two B+I projects, the Convention Centre (NZICC) and Commercial Bay, and two infrastructure projects, Puhoi to Warkworth and Hamilton City Edge Expressway, Fletcher said.

“In three out of the four projects reviewed, being Commercial Bay

and the two projects in the Infrastructure business, KPMG’s forecast outcome is broadly in line with management’s expectations – risks and opportunities exist on each project, however, final margins in all three cases are expected to be positive,” it said.

“The key issues identified relate to the NZICC project, which has already been identified as a major contributor to the company’s losses in FY17.”

KPMG didn’t include the Justice Precinct in the review because that contract is near completion, Fletcher said. It made the statements ahead of its annual meeting in Auckland yesterday morning.

The meeting may see criticism heaped on the board. The NZ Shareholders’ Association has been critical of the company’s performance and communication with investors and plans to address issues including directors’ fees at the meeting.

The NZSA surveyed its members for their views on Fletcher last month with almost 90 per cent of the 250 members who participated wanting changes at board level including 8 per cent who wanted the entire board dumped.

tax working group to look at how Australia’s stepped tax regime operates.

“They have a slightly lower corporate tax rate for companies and businesses that have lower turnover. I’m interested in how we can ease the burden on small businesses in particular.”

In Australia, companies with turnover of less than $10 million a year pay a lower company tax rate.

“This is me foreshadowing that I do have a genuine interest in how we can support those who create jobs in New Zealand,” Ardern said.

“In large part, our small and

medium enterprises – well over 40 per cent of our new jobs – are coming from our SMEs. I want to do all I can to work in partnership with them.”

Ardern has said that any tax working group recommendation on a capital gains tax would not be implemented in this parliamentary term. But she said a recommendation helping small businesses could be introduced before the next election.

National’s finance spokesperson Steven Joyce said the wage increase will make small businesses less competitive and reduce their hiring ability.

Record retail Christmas spending projected By aimee Shaw Retail NZ is estimating Kiwis will spend a record $17.4 billion this Christmas, but retailers are facing mounting pressure.

Festive spending in the leadup to Christmas is important for many retailers looking to make money, but competition from large offshore online retailers poses a great risk, Greg Harford, Retail NZ general manager for public affairs, said.

“Despite the likely increase in spending, it’s not all rosy for retailers,” Harford said.

“Across the sector, retailers face strong competition from each other domestically, as well as from global websites that have massive scale.

“While spending will likely be up over the next couple of months, margins are under pressure, economic uncertainty is likely to put pressure on consumer spending, and many retailers are struggling to hit their sales targets.”

Online spending is likely to peak in November, Harford said.

“We estimate Kiwis will spend a total of $17.4 billion over the next two months across all retail categories, up around 5 per cent from last year,” Harford said.

November and December are busy months for New Zealand retail, Harford said, but consumers opting to shop online at Amazon, ASOS and Boohoo and others could dent profits for local retailers.

“Smaller retail businesses especially rely on a strong Christmas to sustain their businesses through the year, so it’s really important for the sector that the season goes well,” Harford said. “We’re expecting uplifts in consumer spending, especially on clothing, sports and leisure, homeware, accessories and food and drink.”

Last year Kiwis spent almost $6b in electronic card transactions in December alone, up 6.6 per cent from the previous year.

Electronic payments company Paymark recorded the total value of transactions for the month at $5936.8b.

The highest spend overall for December last year was in Auckland-Northland, recorded at $2.4b.

In-home music American poet Maya Angelou once said: “Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances.”

The latest technology is making this easier for people, as music individualised between indoor and outdoor living spaces can be controlled at the touch of a screen.

You may want the tones of relaxing music in your garden at the same time the local radio station plays in the kitchen, and favourite playlists are filling bedrooms.

Music can be part of an overall home automation system, on which your lighting, blinds, heating, security, television and gaming are all controlled.

Such automation gives home owners endless choices in how to control the music in their home. For example, they may set the outdoor speakers to a volume level of just 40 per cent, ensuring the neighbours never have a reason to call noise control. Likewise, speakers in their teenager’s bedrooms can be programmed to drop their volume once it gets to 10pm at night.

Getting out of bed in the morning can be made so much easier. Your favourite playlist or radio station can switch on in time with lighting in your bedroom or ensuite, and the volume can gradually increase as extra encouragement to get

up, alongside the window blinds rolling up and letting the sun-shine in.

The automated systems generally utilise ghost speakers for indoors. They are fitted into the ceiling and painted the same colour as the ceiling. They can be retrofitted into older homes as well.

There are many, many different varieties of thyme out there in the herb world. But the one thyme that I’m particularly fond of is wild creeping thyme.

It is mildly scented, attracts bees (very important) and can be used in cooking like regular thyme. But for me, what makes it just a step above some other thyme varieties is that it can be used as ground cover and is extremely resilient.

Here’s an interesting fact – it’s also said to be deer resistant. This is not really something I’ve had a problem with in my garden at the nursery. But I can tell you it can withstand a good stomping from anything else – kids, dogs called Alvin, nursery chooks and more. This is why it makes a great ground cover or lawn.

Furthermore, unlike other herbs, it doesn’t die back in winter and keeps on giving you bang for your buck. This is why

it’s classified as a hardy (can withstand the cold weather), evergreen (keeps its leaves) perennial (a plant that survives for three or more years).

You can grab some wild creeping thyme seedlings from your local supermarket or our online store at www.awapuni.co.nz Then simply plant your wild creeping thyme plants around 20 to 30cm apart from each other.

You can harvest your thyme straight away but it’s best to give it some time to get established. The longer you leave it, the more leaves you’ll have to harvest later on. Then in spring and after flowering, give it a prune to help maintain its compact appearance.

And before long you’ll be wild about creeping thyme like I am.

At Methven last Sunday Graham Taylor, Roger Herriott, Colin Arnst and Wendy Herriott took 1 st place with 3 wins.

This Wednesday a challenge will be played between a team from the Mayor’s office and the local Radio station, weather hopefully permitting.

On Thursday the greens will be closed after 1pm as a mark of respect for John McLay who died recently. Our sympathies are extended to his family.

To any who are ill we wish you all a speedy recovery and return to good health. Good bowling to all.

The ladies 4’s Championships have been finalised and Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Gaynor Crack and Alison Gibbs defeated Noeline MacKenzie, Heather Goodall, Leonie Spargo and Wendy Herriott by a very small margin.

I was informed it was 1 shot. Well done to both teams.

Mixed triples played last weekend saw an Ashburton team placed 4th with 2 wins. Well done to Alistair and Noeline MacKenzie and Doug Kinvig. Kath Muir also helped her husband and son take 2nd placing.

This Friday the 2nd game of Friday Triples will see both greens full again.

Forty-two members and friends set off up north to Ohoka where we visited a delightful function centre called Lacebark.

We were greeted by the owners Marion and Lindsay Pulley and invited to explore their large, formal garden. A splendid lunch was served and then we proceeded on to Kaiapoi for a spot of shopping.

Firstly the Footwear Outlet, which provided some enthusiastic buying from the ladies and then Blackwells Department Store, which is being managed by two fifth generation members of the Blackwells family.

Their building has just recently been finally repaired from earthquake damage and is looking very smart.

Time was also spent exploring the other shops in the vicinity before heading south for an ice cream stop at Rolleston, arriving back in Ashburton at 5pm.

Lion David Bennett has transferred his membership from the Temuka Lions Club to Pakeke Lions.

Ina Divers placed the membership badge of Lion Colin Divers, her late husband, on the banner.

Clip boards circulated requested support for the selling of Christmas raffle tickets, Open day at Trott’s garden, Special needs day out on November 28 in the Tinwald Domain and the Temuka Pakeke Lions club visit November 22. The programme for this visit will include visits to the worm farm and the Ashburton Museum with a BBQ lunch and bowls competition at the MSA grounds. Members were reminded of the visit to the Rosevear Gardens.

Patrice gave a very informative talk with accompanying slide show on their trip and it was interesting to see photos of many historic sites with significant Biblical meaning.

Speaker for the evening was well known Ashburtonian Roger Paterson who took us on a journey through his life from being an ice cream seller at the long gone St James Theatre to a very much respected funeral director.

During that time he completed an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, amongst his tasks being the making of funeral caskets.

As a skilled craftsman he became involved in other enterprises where he could use his talents before becoming involved in all aspects of the funeral business, eventually establishing Paterson’s Funeral Services.

Roger gave us a comprehensive insight into what is involved with this ending phase of life. With the advancement of technology funeral services have changed into how they are delivered.

The actual funeral can now be beamed live to anywhere in the world enabling families to grieve simultaneously.

Roger is also well known as a community person involved in many organisations with responsibilities and leadership roles in the community and further afield.

Basketball took him to many places as a player, referee and administrator. An informative and interesting talk from a person passionate in his work and service with a quiet and respectful empathy for people in times of need.

Former England batsman Ian Bell has fired back in the Ashes war of words, declaring Australia are attempting to hide their nerves.

David Warner recently put all manner of English noses out of joint by calling on teammates to find their inner “hatred” of the opposition they will face in the showpiece five-Test series.

Warner also remarked “as soon as you step on that line it’s war”, with the vice-captain later admitting he regrets some of the colourful language.

Steve Hansen Hansen said operating under the scrutiny and so-called negativity that seemed to upset Gatland was par for the course in New Zealand, and it actually helped drive the team forward.

“That’s what you get all the time with the All Blacks,” he said.

“Welcome to our world. You are under constant pressure, constant scrutiny. People expect you to be able to front up and do the job well.

“In the All Blacks’ case, we are expected to win every test match and win it well.

“You don’t want to change those expectations – they drive your own inner expectations to be even higher. It drives that necessity to want to always be better.

“You don’t always achieve that on a daily basis, but if you are trying to be better every day at least you are giving yourself a chance.

“Our fans, our country expect us to aim high, to play well, they expect us to win. I love that.

“That’s exactly what we should be doing.

Everyone in our group is trying to do that – to win every test match with attractive rugby.

“Is it possible to do all the time? I’m not sure. But there is nothing stopping you from trying to. And I wouldn’t be doing the job if I didn’t still have the same passion.”

After the weekend’s Brisbane defeat, Hansen said the All Blacks had been forced into using players not fully steeled by enough test experience.

“We’ve got some trying circumstances at the moment with nine or 10 players out,” he said.

“That’s on top of losing all that legendary talent after the World Cup – that’s over 50 per cent of your team.

“It is a heck of a great challenge for us to come through, but next year when all nine are available then watch what happens because we’ve grown depth and experience.

Gatland was upset with post-tour comments by players, the Kiwi media, and “the negativity in New Zealand”.

Hansen was in a defiant mood in an interview with Radio Sport’s Martin Devlin, saying he was still driven to improve as a coach while warning the rest of the rugby world what to expect from the All Blacks when top players return next year.

Hansen and Welsh coach Gatland will lock horns again in Cardiff next month.

The All Black coach was bemused by Gatland’s reaction to the Lions tour.

“I’ve only just heard it [Gatland’s comments] because I don’t read too much about what coaches are saying and doing,” he said.

“Why would you hate coaching the Lions? If you hate coaching, don’t do it. I love coaching any team I’ve been involved in – that’s the reason I’m doing it.

“I’m lucky enough to coach the All Blacks, which is fantastic, if you are lucky enough to coach the Lions it is also fantastic.”

Kiwis want to make NZ proud Kiwis veteran Simon Mannering is determined to restore some pride and belief in the black and white jersey, starting in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup opener against Samoa.

The 31-year-old lock forward says the World Cup is an opportunity to regain the wide support of the New Zealand public after a poor run of results over the past 12 months.

The Kiwis head into the Mt Smart Stadium clash having won just one of their last six encounters since coach David Kidwell replaced former coach Stephen Kearney last September, and the 42-test veteran admits they have a point to prove.

“We just want to make New Zealand proud of the Kiwis team,” said Mannering.

“For sure we’ve had times where we’ve let them down with our performance in the past and we just want a country that’s proud of their team.

“We’re going out there to put in a good performance for New Zealand and for our teammates and supporters.”

The former Kiwis captain’s experience will be vital against a Samoan side chock full of size and power although, as hard as it is to believe, his involvement in the World Cup was a point of intense debate for national selectors.

Ever humble, Mannering never assumed he’d make the cut and insists he would have understood had he been overlooked – although he still believes he has plenty to offer.

“I hope so,” he laughed. “You get to a point in your career where it gets harder and harder every year but you never take this opportunity for granted and I’m just stoked to be a part of this group and a part of this tournament.

“For sure. I know the last time we played them we only just scraped past them (14-12) in Whangarei.

“You look at their squad and they have plenty of seasoned campaigners and obviously the physicality is there without a doubt.”

Having played at Mt Smart

almost every second week throughout his 280 game career, Mannering is looking forward to running out for a rare test match on home turf.

“I’ve played one other game at Mt Smart for the Kiwis and that was my very first game (2006 Four Nations against Australia), so it’s been a long, long time and it will be cool.

“It’s such a great ground for rugby league and obviously I’ve got a lot of fond memories playing there so hopefully we get a good turn out.”

There is every chance Purdom could be joined by another Mid Cantabrian on the field on Sunday, with Melanie Puckett featuring on the bench for the side in their semifinal victory against Waikato.

Hurricanes hooker Leni Apisai has made a timely return from injury and will start at hooker for Wellington in the NPC Championship division final against Bay of Plenty. Apisai will start Friday’s final in Wellington in place of dynamic rake Asafo Aumua, who has won selection in the All Blacks for the season-ending tour of Europe. In brief Record smashed Central Districts batsman Brad Schmulian has broken a 136 year old domestic cricket record with a powerful innings yesterday.

Schmulian blasted 203 from 207 balls on his first-class debut, breaking the record for the biggest century on first-class debut in New Zealand. Walking out to the crease with CD in major trouble at 7-3, Schmulian quickly got into his work, bringing up a 50 from 67 balls, before becoming the 24th player to score a century on debut, from 105 balls. Schmulian continued to plunder and when reaching 176 he broke the record for the biggest century on debut, passing George Watson, who made 175 for Canterbury in 1881.

He eventually fell two balls after bringing up 200.

Joshua eyes fight with Parker Anthony Joshua will attempt to unify the heavyweight titles and become undisputed champion of the world in 2018, with promoter Eddie Hearn planning on three contests next year.

Ideally, there would be a unification fight either in February or March, a summer fight in Britain or the United States, and a November stadium showdown.

First, Joshua, who holds the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation titles, must come through the challenge of late replacement Carlos Takam this weekend in Cardiff. If he manages that, he is likely to target Joseph Parker, the New Zealander who holds the World Boxing Organisation

crown, followed by a blockbuster battle with American Deontay Wilder, the World Boxing Council champion, who defends his belt in New York on November 5 for the sixth time. Both are unbeaten.

“I want to unify all the titles and fight all the champions by the end of 2018,” explained Joshua, who also has Tyson Fury on his radar, late next year, although the Lancastrian is currently suspended.

Several scenarios have been posited by Hearn. One could entail Joshua fighting WBO champion Parker at the O2 Arena in London on February 3, with the venue already booked. If that is impossible, a fight in the Mid-

dle East in March or April could be possible. “The plan is for AJ to unify the belts in 2018, and we really would like to create three massive fights next year,” Hearn said.

“February 3 is a potential date, at the O2, against Parker for the WBO belt, or if that doesn’t work out, so too is a fight in the Middle East in the first quarter. Wilder is a target as well, in a summer fight. But we are also offering Wilder that February 3 date at the O2 Arena against Dillian Whyte.”

Prior to Joshua’s thrilling fight with Wladimir Klitschko in April, Whyte had given Joshua, now unbeaten in 19 contests, his toughest test.

Whyte is ranked highly and it

is inevitable that the south London fighter will challenge Joshua again, though he is an outsider for 2018’s plans.

“Ideally, we want Wilder to fight Whyte on February 3, and we have offered him $3 million plus US television money, which is worth at least another million,” revealed Hearn. “It would be the perfect lead in to a Joshua fight, if Wilder could come through that.”

If such a scenario unfolds, Joshua’s next fight could switch to the Middle East.

A former judge who had led Guatemala’s soccer federation is set to be the first person sentenced in the United States in the world soccer scandal.

Hector Trujillo is scheduled to be sentenced today in the federal court in Brooklyn. Trujillo pleaded guilty in June to wire fraud and conspiracy. He admitted to accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from a company trying to secure sports marketing contracts. Prosecutors say the former general secretary of Guatemala’s soccer federation should serve more than three years in prison.

First group winner for sire Berkley Stud stallion Highly Recommended has scored his first Group victory as a sire after Sumstreetsumwhere won the Gr.2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa on Monday.

Highly Recommended now boasts a strike rate of 10 per cent stakes winners to runners and has some smart representatives on the track from his first crop.

They include Hong Kongbound dual stakes winner Waldorf, Gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) and Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) place getter Joyfilly and Listed Wanganui Guineas (1340m) runner-up Kirkland.

“It is good to get a new one because Waldorf has been sold to Hong Kong,” Berkley Stud coowner Edwina Morris said.

Classie Brigade expected to make full recovery West Melton trainer Nigel McGrath is staying positive despite scratching Classie Brigade and Ears Burning from the New Zealand Cup last Thursday, then losing Sheriff out of Sires Stakes Series for three-year-olds despite winning at Addington last Friday.

“There is an old saying that the more bad luck you have, the closer you are to having some good luck,” McGrath said.

The good news with Classie Brigade is that he’s expected to make a full recovery from a mystery lameness, described as a “real head-scratcher” by the trainer.

In brief

“He’d raced at two, three and four and done quite a bit of travelling and never had a lame step in his life,” McGrath said.

“But after he jogged (two weeks ago) he was quite lame. We did multiple x-rays and scans on him but couldn’t pin-point the problem.”

After being freshened, McGrath says Classie Brigade is 98 per cent right but had missed too much work to think about starting in the New Zealand Cup. “It’s a real shame and just bad timing as it’s the main race of the year but the main thing is I still

have a horse. He should be able to race in December.

“There are good races on both sides of the Tasman after Christmas so we might even go to Aussie with him.”

Classie Brigade, a race rival of champion pacer Lazarus for the last two years, is the only one who has come remotely close to Lazarus, on a time basis, over 3200m.

NZ sport set for big shakeup New Zealand sport could be in for its biggest shakeup since the cheerless days post-Sydney Olympics.

Phrased slightly differently, Sport New Zealand could be in for its biggest makeover in more than a decade.

In election year you can forget about the tired old notion that sport and politics don’t mix.

In the lead-up to the August poll, Labour and Greens indicated dissatisfaction with New Zealand’s sporting set-up.

While it is easier to be braver in opposition than it is in Government, early signs point to High Performance Sport New Zealand losing the relative autonomy it has been afforded since inception in 2011.

Labour’s then-spokesman for sport Trevor Mallard was unambiguous about his views on Sport NZ and HPSNZ, telling the Herald on Sunday’s Andrew Alderson that the two bodies must be “combined”.

Yesterday it was announced Grant Robertson would take the Minister for Sport and Recreation portfolio. Pairing it with the weighty finance portfolio is intriguing. It would not be drawing too long a bow to suggest that he would be an easy mark for critics if he allowed for largesse in sport while taking control of the country’s purse strings.

The formation of HPSNZ was the culmination of a decade of increased Crown investment in elite sport with the aim of New Zealand performing well on the global stage. This occurred in the wake of a disastrous one gold, three bronze haul at the 2000 Olympics – a result that saw New Zealand finish 46th on the medal table, behind countries like Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

The New Zealand Sports Foundation and Hillary Commission essentially morphed

into Sparc under the Sport and Recreation New Zealand Act 2002.

Between the Athens ’04 and Beijing Olympic campaigns, after a Melbourne Commonwealth Games effort that fell well below target, Sparc moved to a targeted funding model that identified campaigns and individuals that were best placed to return medals.

All the while, Crown funding was increasing, from $6.2 million in 2001-02 to more than $80m in 2012-13.

In 2011, in a bid to sharpen New Zealand’s elite pathways and performance, High Performance Sport New Zealand was split from Sport New Zealand (formerly Sparc), leaving the latter to concentrate on the development, implementation and funding of strategies for recreation and community and regional sport.

If success is measured in medals, you could argue the latest incarnation of New Zealand’s centralised system is working well. At the London Olympics, the first following the formation of HPSNZ, New Zealand finished 14th on the table, winning six golds in its 13-medal haul. This was a significant improvement on New Zealand’s three gold, ninemedal haul in Beijing.

Last year, in Rio de Janeiro, New Zealand slipped down the table to 19th, with the disappointment of four golds masked by a record haul of 18 medals.

It was a curious campaign, marked by a print media boycott of Rio that meant that on-the-ground coverage was little more than New Zealand Olympic Committee propaganda. It was only after the team returned that athlete dissatisfaction with how things were working at the pointy end started to crystallise.

Three-time Olympic medallist Mahe Drysdale and twotime medallist Jo Aleh became the spokespeople for many when they went public with their criticisms of a bureaucracy that saw 85 Sport NZ and HPSNZ employees on salaries more than $100,000, while athletes were offered Performance Enhancing Grants that ranged from $60,000 for a gold medallist to $25,000 if you were top 12 in the world.

Back to the election campaign and Green MP Julie Anne Genter was as forthright as Mallard, saying: “Sports spending needs to be reviewed because at the moment we have double-ups and crossover between these boards.

These entities are burning through a lot of public money

that needs to be better focused on our athletes.”

There must be an element of discomfort in Sport New Zealand’s offices and, more particularly, the HPSNZ base.

HPSNZ recently lost highly regarded Canadian Alex Baumann as chief executive and replaced him with an Australian Michael Scott, who is yet to start. There are quite rightly questions being asked as to why New Zealand’s vaunted “system” hasn’t been able to groom a local administrator capable of heading HPSNZ. Robertson is a cricket tragic and a sports nut. You suspect he will embrace the role in a way that Jonathan Coleman never did. That guarantees nothing, however.

As a high-performance sporting nation, New Zealand has undergone some incredible highs in the past decade.

The country’s athletes have won 40 Olympic medals including 13 golds and many world championship titles, particularly in rowing, kayaking, cycling, sailing and athletics.

The common denominator?

The successful sports are all heavily funded by the Crown.

Other sports, less gilded but no less popular, meanwhile get next to nothing and rely on gaming machine money to survive. This is not necessarily a bad thing; you cannot hand pots of gold to every sport so it makes sense on one level to target those that can deliver a return, though it does set in place a vicious cycle.

“The balance of funding has gone too far in favour of elite sport,” said Mallard in the HoS. “Medals are important, but exercise and participation are more so.”

Again, talk is cheap.

Sport Coulthard a dad to twins Kiwi Supercars driver Fabian Coulthard has become a father just a day after competing at the Gold Coast 600. Coulthard’s partner Becky Lamb gave birth to twins – a boy and a girl – on Monday just hours after the New Zealander lost the lead of the Supercars Championship.

Mackenzie Rae Coulthard weighed in at 6.17lb and Carter Stephen Coulthard at 4.63lb, with Lamb posting on social media that “both are strong and healthy”. The Shell V-Power Ford driver will head to New Zealand next week to compete in the penultimate round at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

After a hectic time battling it out against the world’s best rowers, Mid Canterbury’s Emma Dyke now has a chance to put her feet up after a successful international rowing season with the New Zealand Women’s Eight “I’m happy with it (the season). It was tough but a good one,” she said.

Dyke returned with several medals, including a gold from the World Rowing Cup in Poznan, Poland, and a bronze medal from the Rowing World Championships which were held in Florida at the end of Sep-

tember/early October.

Despite competing on the world stage, it was a special event that was a highlight of the year for the 22-year-old.

“Taking out the Henley Regatta was probably the highlight for me,” she said.

“Talking to some of the other rowers it is a really big thing on a lot of rowers’ bucket lists. It is different because you are racing one-on-one which is not what most of us had done, so it can be quite stressful because if you don’t win you are last.”

A few questions were raised around if the team would even make it to Florida due to the

hurricanes that were affecting the region at the time.

“It was a bit touch and go if we were going to be able to fly in for the event. There were a couple of countries that were delayed in arriving but were lucky that our flight arrived just after the hurricane had passed and we could get in,” she said.

With the Olympic Games always a goal, Dyke said she has her sights set on having a good domestic season.

“I am just hoping for a good summer training and hopefully I will make the eight again,” she said.

“Tokyo (Olympics in 2018) is

still a long term goal.”

While the Olympics are a target for Dyke, doing it with her eight teammates is a big part of why she does it.

“Rowing in the eight is one of the main reasons why I love doing it,” she said.

“We get to go do all these things and experience all these things together. Everyone gets on really great and while it is a high stress kind of thing and we could be unhappy, we all get on really well.

“Being girls we can be quite emotional but we know how everyone else deals with the stress and we work together.”

Watson, ARL agree on Warriors price The Auckland Rugby League’s move to acquire the New Zealand Warriors is gathering momentum.

Representatives of the ARL, who hope to take a majority share in the NRL club through the Carlaw Park Heritage Trust, have agreed an asking price with current owner Eric Watson, resolving a previous gulf between their respective valuations of the club.

The ARL has almost completed its second week of due diligence of the club, and have one

of the big four accounting firms acting on their behalf to do a comprehensive appraisal of assets, liabilities and accounts, which is the final step before a sale and purchase agreement can be negotiated.

There could be a settlement date as early as the end of next month.

Representatives of the ARL will meet with coaching and management staff at the Warriors over the next week as they continue to garner intelligence on the operations side of the

club. The ARL intend to take a 55 per cent shareholding in the Warriors, with three corporate partners taking 15 per cent apiece.

The ARL are assessing several possible partners, but are keen to find the right fit.

“For us it’s a logical and good step,” ARL Chairman Cameron McGregor told the Herald.

“Having corporate partners is important because they bring that corporate discipline, which is essential. Obviously as well as a football club this is a big brand

and a big business.

“We know a lot about the football side of things but having that corporate discipline is important for us to mitigate any risk. We have had some good discussions with a few interested parties.”

Financially, the deal stacks up.

The new funding model put in place by the NRL means an extra $3 million into each club’s coffers from next season, virtually guaranteeing a healthy annual profit each year at Mt Smart.
