The number of people out of work and looking for jobs in the Ashburton District jumped 20 per cent in the year to September 30. Ministry of Social Development unemployment figures show the district’s job seeker numbers rose sharply for the year to September 30, up from 357 last year to 430. The district’s unemployment rate remains low, however, at 2 per cent of the working age population (approximately 21,000) compared to the national rate of 4.2 per cent. Job seeker numbers might have risen but there is still plenty of work around says Canstaff chief executive Matt Jones. The rise in unemployment numbers for the September quarter could probably be laid at the door of a late start to the meatworks season and a bit more

caution in the dairy sector, he said. “There’s certainly work out there but it’s also about people not waiting until their dream job comes along. Take a job until the one you want comes along. Don’t wait, you’re far more employable if you’re already in work.” The dairy job market might not be as flush as it was in the past but that sector and construction were still struggling to find the right people for jobs, Jones said. “The job opportunities in construction in particular are very, very good and not all employers are finding the people they need.” He deals with a number of job seekers in the youth (15 to 24) age bracket and said that for some finding the work available did not match their ideal job was often a bit of a reality check. To boost the number of apprentices in training, Canstaff has established its

own apprenticeship scheme with an inhouse trainer and mentor. “We’re now investing in these young people. In the past employers have said they’ve spent a year’s worth of time and money training someone and then they’ve moved on. We’re doing this in Ashburton and Christchurch to get more young people into training.” That unemployment had risen was not a surprise, given the double whammy of tougher times in the dairy sector and a slow start to the killing season, says mayor Donna Favel. She’s says the district is still strong and still growing and that means the job market will continue to grow.
