Crowd well behaved at Methven Rodeo

The 6000-strong crowd at this year’s Methven Rodeo yesterday was particularly well behaved, organisers say.

The annual event attracted more than 330 entries from all over the country to the Methven Showgrounds yesterday.

President Tom Plunkett said the day had been a great success with a large crowd and good weather – not too hot but no rain or wind.

“It went as good as gold.”

Crowds of people, including large numbers of families, lined the banks with food, drinks and blankets.

They were particularly well-behaved

this year, Mr Plunkett said.

“The crowd has been very good.”

Most of the money raised from the event would be going to the Methven Care Trust this year.

“By coming to the rodeo you also know you are supporting the community.”

However, they would not know how much money they raised until later in the year.

The event is a huge undertaking each year and would not be possible without the loyal committee of about 20 people.

“It’s a big team effort. It ran pretty smoothly.”

The only downside to yesterday’s event was when one of the cowboys was

kicked off a horse and knocked out.

The cowboy was taken to hospital but was fine, he said.

There had been calls to ban rodeos nationally from animal rights groups but the stock at the Methven event were all treated well and a lot of work had been done this year to make the yards more stock-friendly.

All of the animals were checked by a vet before and after each event and were all fine, Mr Plunkett said.

Titanic survivor’s silver cup gift sold A silver cup given to the captain of a rescue ship by a Titanic survivor has been sold at auction for £130,000 ($NZ294,833).

American socilalite Margaret Brown gave the item to Sir Arthur Henry Rostron as a thank you a month after being saved from the vessel - which sank in 1912 claiming the lives of around 1500 people. The sterling silver loving cup was one of a number of Titanic lots sold by auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire - who also sold a biscuit from the ill-fated ship for £15,000 ($NZ34,019). The cup was sold to a British collector for more than three times its guide price after a bidding war broke.

“This is without doubt one of the most iconic objects relating to the Titanic disaster and carries a truly impeccable provenance,” company spokesman Andrew Aldrige said. “At one we point we had eight telephone bidders - including one on board a private jet off the west coast of America.

“The loving cup has now become the third most expensive item to be sold from the Titanic.”

Man meets mountain It was a moment where even the most powerful man in New Zealand realised his limits. Prime Minister John Key got a first-up impression of what the Springboks had to counter at Twickenham yesterday when man mountain All Black Sam Whitelock sidled over to shake his hand. It’s almost a case of Andre the Giant meeting a tiny woodsman as Whitelock towers over the PM who visited the All Blacks in their dressing room immediately after the narrow 20-18 semi-final win over South Africa in London. The PM was undoubtedly congratulating Whitelock on his match-turning lineout steal off Springbok veteran Victor Matfield late in the game which helped swing the semi New Zealand’s way.

The dinner-plate sized hands of the All Black star virtually swallowed Key’s hand and the PM will be glad it was the Springboks who had to ward off Whitelock.

A series of light quakes rumbled through the east coast overnight Saturday and into yesterday. The strongest of the shakes - described as “moderate” by GeoNet - hit near Gisborne at 11pm on Saturday. It was 16km deep and had a magnitude of 3.7, striking 15km north-west of Tolaga Bay on the east coast of the North Island. A number of light quakes were recorded before and afterwards, with the first kicking off about 9.30pm in the same location. Another moderate quake struck about 6.35am in the same region - about 45km south-east of Murupara. It had a magnitude of 3.8 and was 13km deep. There have been no reports of damage.

The Victorian building complex that doubled as Harry Potter’s school Hogwarts has been converted into luxury apartments. The Royal Connaught Park in Bushey, southern England, has been renovated by officials at Comer Homes.

The old place housed Hogwarts’ Great Hall and Professor Dumbledore’s office.

New Adele single British singer Adele has released a melancholic ballad from her hotly anticipated new album, after a four-year wait by millions of fans. The song Hello is about a love story gone wrong and features the same powerful voice and emotion of her international blockbuster Someone Like You from her best-selling album 21. “I’m sorry for breaking your heart/ But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore,” the 27-year-old sings in the black-and-white video, filmed in the Quebec countryside around Montreal. Weather continues to cause havoc

Wild winds and carelessness have been causing havoc for the district’s firefighters.

This month, emergency services have attended more than 25 vegetation fire call-outs in Mid Canterbury with many of them being the result of reignitions.

Ashburton principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said too many had either reignited during strong winds due to lack of care or had been lit during gusty weather.

“There needs to be some personal accountability.”

Anyone wanting to light a burnoff needed to check the weather forecast, supervise the blaze and, at the end, make sure the rem-

nants were completely out.

“Even if smoke isn’t visible, reignitions can still be occurring.

“The only way to ensure a fire is out completely is either to bury the residue or pull the residue heaps apart and thoroughly wet down any remaining unburnt material.”

With a strong El Nino weather pattern being predicted for the summer months the warmer windy conditions would continue, he said.

Last week firefighters were called out to six fires that were lit or had reignited in winds.

Mayfield, Ashburton and Mt Somers crews attended a fire after ashes from recently burnt trees reignited and spread to a shel-

ter belt on Hinds Gorge Road at 7.13pm on Wednesday.

Mayfield Rural Fire Force officer Gordon Duthie said while they were at the blaze a farmer approached emergency services because he had three piles of tree stumps lit about a week ago that started to flare up at 9.55pm on Montalto Road.

There was no damage but they put the fires out as a precaution due to there being a plantation nearby. Firefighters from Ashburton and Hinds rural and Ashburton volunteer spent several hours dousing flames at a property on Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road at 7.45pm on the same evening.

fire officer Ian Fielder said a pile of tree cuttings had been lit and left unattended.

High winds caused sparks to ignite another six piles which then threatened to move to trees on the boundary of that property and the next.

“I’m surprised how many people are lighting fires when they know there’s high winds coming and leaving them unattended.”

Lauriston and Ashburton rural fire forces and Rakaia and Methven volunteer fire brigades spent about an hour-and-half at a fire which escaped from a pit into a shelter belt on Barrhill Road at about 2pm last Thursday.

A small rubbish burn-off which spread to flax bushes on a prop-

erty on Methven Highway was quickly put out by Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade at 5.07pm on Saturday.

Methven station officer Gary Blackwell said they also spent several hours at a larger blaze which spread from a burn-off to a tree line on Ashburton River Road at 6.43pm.

The fire, which was 150m long, occurred after the wind picked up and started burning pine needles and gorse surrounding the trees.

Alford Forest, Mayfield and Mt Somers crews also attended.

Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade and Lauriston Rural Fire Force also put out a small tractor fire on Back Track Road, Highbank, at 5.40pm on Thursday.

Jokers rev their engines for anniversary More than 70 bikers revved their engines around the district to celebrate the Jokers Social Club’s 25th anniversary at the weekend.

Members of the motorcycling group and their guests had a gettogether on Friday night before leaving for a ride around Mid Canterbury on Saturday and a party in the evening.

Group members come from diverse backgrounds, but they’re drawn together by their love of motorbikes and riding.

Secretary Gerald McKenzie said the weekend was great fun and the weather was wonderful for the ride around Mid Canterbury on Saturday.

Dog trials please crowds

The course is set and the sheep and dogs are in training for this year’s Tux New Zealand Challenge Dog Trials at this year’s Ashburton A&P Show.

With 122 entries, convener David King is busy leading the welloiled team responsible for the dog trial section for the second year.

He says while there are fewer sheep around these days, the sport has retained its popularity, both with triallists and spectators.

Several farmers who have converted to dairying have retained a sheepdog or two for competition and the sport of dog trialling also attracts a number of women competitors.

For years, Mark and Todd Copland have stepped up to the mark and provided the sheep for the two days of competition.

It’s a contribution the show committee appreciates.

“It’s very hard to find hoggets these days because most people lamb them,” Mr King said.

Sheep are accustomed to being moved in large mobs and the Coplands will spend a couple of days working them in small groups to prepare them for the competitions.

But even a few practice runs will not prevent any unpredictable or belligerent sheep from standing their ground or bolting

The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning people travelling on State Highway One from tomorrow until November 12 as the highway is resurfaced near Rakaia. Traffic signals will be used to reduce traffic to a single lane during the day.

Car fire Police are investigating a suspicious car fire which occurred on Melrose Road at 12.34pm on Saturday. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said firefighters only spent about 30 minutes dousing the flames. Because no-one was there at the time the fire was being treated as suspicious and was being investigated by police.

“There’s always testing situations,” Mr King said.

In between keeping the ball rolling during the competition, Mr King will run two dogs of his own – Turk and Patch.

In the sport of dog trialling there are four main events, but

the Ashburton competition concentrates on the short head and yard.

Using the parlance of the sport, the triallist “casts out” the heading dog, which involves directing it to run around the other side of three sheep, it them “lifts” and “pulls” the sheep toward a marked quadrangle.

The triallist and dog then com-

bine to “drive” the sheep along a pegged lane and over a bridge working them into a two-metresquare yard or “pen”.

The run is complete when the gate is shut on the pen. Time limits vary between 10 and 15 minutes.

The competitions will get underway on Friday morning and run throughout Saturday.

Body found in search for sunken fishing boat A crew member of the FV Jubilee, which sank off the Canterbury coast near the Rakaia River mouth, has been seen inside the submerged boat.

The boat, which had three crew on board, made a distress call at 4.30am on Sunday, October 18, and a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission commenced at 6.30am.

Canterbury police SAR deployed a team on Saturday, which

identified an item of interested in the investigation, as being the FV Jubilee.

Sergeant Phil Simmonds said the team consisted of three members of the NZ Police Dive Squad and their radial sonar; four members of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Operational Diving Team and their Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and representatives from the Transport Accident In-

vestigation Commission (TAIC).

“The team saw, what is believed to be, one deceased inside the FV Jubilee during the ROV survey.

“Police are in close contact with the next of kin of all the crew who were understood to have been on the FV Jubilee at the time of the incident.

“The person seen on the ROV footage has not yet been recov-

ered or identified and Police will not speculate on which of the three crew it may be.”

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

The families of the men are being supported by Canterbury Police and Victim Support TAIC have an ongoing inquiry into the sinking of the FV Jubilee and a police investigation is continuing.

Three people were arrested and charged with drink-driving after being caught driving over the limit overnight on Saturday. Sergeant Bryan Ennis, of Ashburton, said a 49-year-old Ashburton man recorded an excess breath alcohol level of 507mcg at 11.10pm on Saturday. A 25-year-old man blew 651mcg at 2.20am and a 30-year-old man recorded a level of 973mcg. It was disappointing that they blew such high readings and that people were still drinkdriving, he said. All three would be appearing in court.

Body discovered Police investigating a body found in a Christchurch house yesterday are treating the death as suspicious. The man’s body was found by a friend at a Linwood address just before midday. The man was not formally identified but police believed he occupied the house. Detective Inspector Tony Hill said the death was treated as being suspicious. “It is early stages for the investigation and we are still trying to piece together what occurred.” - NZME

Hannah paves way for talented Kiwis

World Championships of Performing Arts auditions in Christchurch next month could be the beginning of an amazing career for talented Mid Cantabrians.

So says Joanne Wakelin, mum of Ashburton 14-year-old Hannah who is studying at an arts academy near Los Angeles on a scholarship after making the championships last year.

The auditions are for the New Zealand team to compete in the 20th annual championships in Hollywood in July next year.

Mrs Wakelin welcomed auditions being held in Christchurch for the first time, after Hannah had had to audition by video.

“It’s just been so amazing for our daughter, I want other people to have the same chance. The world can open up for people, and there’s so much talent around in Mid Canterbury,” Mrs Wakelin said.

World Championships of Performing Arts New Zealand (WCO-

PANZ) director Dina Janse van Rensburg said there were generally up to 70 people, ranging from children to those in their 40s, auditioning each year from throughout the country. This year’s team had performed fantastically and brought home lots of medals. It comprised 11 members, but the number in any one year could be higher or lower than that, as it depended on how talented those auditioning were.

“It’s a big competition, we would not want anyone to be out of their depth,” she said.

Mrs Janse van Rensburg said while she organised everything, the cost of the trip comprising airfares and accommodation was borne by the participants, amounting to approximately $US3000. It was an amount that could be a lot for many families, but gave opportunities to be spotted by talent scouts, to be awarded scholarships and to gain networking opportunities with like-minded people from around the world.

She may have her scholarship rolled over for the duration of her secondary schooling. She was studying the school curriculum, while majoring in dance which she practised at least from 1pm to 6.30pm daily.

“It’s very full-on, and she’s loving it,” Mrs Wakelin said.

Dad Craig was staying in the town of Idyllwild with her, where he was able to work remotely in his job as a share trader. Mrs Wakelin remains at home in Ashburton with 17-year-old son Ben, and she said it had been a big decision to separate the family.

However, the opportunity had been well worth it, and technology these days meant the family could keep in touch.

Former Mid Canterbury family violence co-ordinator Jim Sole has some concerns there will be no-one taking over his role.

Mr Sole, who had his last day in Ashburton on Friday, will be returning to his position as supervisor for the Christchurch police Family Safety Team after being seconded to Ashburton for 18 months.

Canterbury police district prevention manager Inspector Richard Bruce had previously said they would be “exploring options” to ensure Ashburton’s needs were met.

There are currently 17 family violence officers in Canterbury committed to preventing family violence throughout the region.

However, Mr Sole said the complexity of the work required someone who specialised in family violence issues and was solely dedicated to the district.

“I have some worries that there will be no-one in the role.”

Family violence occurred in all communities and people needed to make sure they valued each other.

“We don’t own people – we don’t own our children and we don’t own our partners.

“People are often reluctant to become engaged in other people’s lives when it’s actually important that they do.

“It’s about being prepared to take a stand.”

He would also miss the sense of satisfaction he got when seeing the staff here doing some really good work with victims.

In his position Mr Sole looked at the district’s response to family violence and the relationship between police and agencies tasked with dealing with family violence and its victims.

N-bomb takes out soldiers A group of soldiers had to be hospitalised after taking a mystery drug in Palmerston North yesterday, sparking a Defence Force investigation and possible charges.

Police said they were called to a group of eight men suffering effects from an “unknown substance” at 3.40am.

Authorities would not reveal what the substance was, but a source said it was

thought to be “N-Bomb” – an illegal synthetic drug that left a Christchurch man in a critical condition earlier this month.

Police said the men were originally taken into custody before being transported to Palmerston North hospital for treatment.

All eight have been treated and discharged, a Palmerston North Hospital spokesman said.

Nearly 100 offenders have received final warnings under “three strikes” legislation in New Zealand courts but the jury is still out on the effectiveness of the legislation.

Ministry of Justice figures showed 967 offenders received first warnings under the legislation between January 1 and September 30 this year. The number of first warnings increased each year between 2010 and 2013, but dropped in 2014.

Figures showed 96 second strikes had

been issued in courts since the legislation was introduced, with the number increasing each year. No one has yet received a third strike.

Hawke’s Bay-based former Act Party candidate Duncan Lennox said the difference between the number of first and final warnings in his region showed people were heeding the risks of continuing to offend. “Three strikes” is Act Party policy.

Fan dies on way to big game An avid Kiwi rugby fan died after falling ill on a Rugby World Cup tour bus on its way to the All Blacks’ semifinal match.

It is understood the man in his 60s from Manawatu collapsed on a tour bus operated by Williment Sports Travel just before arriving at Twickenham Stadium in London yesterday morning (NZT).

The company has refused to comment.

In memory of 8-hour work day Sue Newman

or most New Zealanders, Labour Day is just another holiday, part of a welcome long weekend that signals the end of winter.

Like many other statutory holidays we take it for granted, but Labour Day marks a significant event in New Zealand’s history. It recognises the struggle to achieve an eight-hour working day and in this we were among the first country in the world to claim that right.

It’s a day that’s been marked since the 1890s and in its early years it featured huge Labour Day parades where unionists and supporters marched accompanied by ornate horse drawn floats, before workers and families picnicked and took part in sports events.

The eight-hour working day became the official working day for most New Zealanders in 1899.

In the days when unions ran the workplace, hours were rigidly set. People clocked in, stopped for smoko and lunch and clocked out. If they worked longer than eight hours, then overtime clauses in their union based contract kicked in.

Then unions held the power and often held employers and at times the country to ransom. They pushed too far and ultimately union membership ceased to be compulsory. The day of the union led workforce came to an end. Today the pendulum has swung a long way in the opposite direction and the power is almost all in the hands of the employer. The eight-hour working day has all but disappeared for many, many Kiwi workers.

We’ve come a long way as a nation since then on many fronts, but in terms of employment there are many who would say employees have lost ground. The hard fought for eight-hour working day for many New Zealanders is just a dream.

It is modern business practice that hours of work are varied, flexible and tailored to meet the needs of a business. And that’s as it should be. As a country and as a district our economy has grown because business owners and employees have worked together and respected one another’s rights.

But in recent years there’s been a subtle change in the workplace and many employees’ working days stretch to nine hours and beyond.

Perhaps Labour Day 2015 is a time to reflect on modern day workplace change and ask – have we gone too far?

our years ago, following the Canterbury earthquakes and the global financial crisis, the Government set a target of achieving a surplus for the 2014/15 year.

The final numbers are in, confirming the Government’s books are back in surplus. This is a significant milestone and one we can all take great pride in.

The $414 million surplus in the year to June 30, 2015 is a huge turnaround on the deficit of more than $18 billion that New Zealand faced back in 2011.

It makes us one of the first developed countries to get its books back in a strong position following the global financial crisis.

By setting a path back to surplus and running a clear economic plan to support growth, more jobs and higher incomes, the Government is providing opportunities for New Zealanders and their families to get ahead.

We’ve worked hard to get on top of spending and to deliver better public services within tight financial constraints. We’ve focused on getting better results from taxpayers’ money, particularly for our most vulnerable people.

We will remain focused on managing the Government’s finances in a sensible and responsible manner, continuing to pay down debt, and on building a more productive and competitive economy.

Getting back to surplus is part of the Government’s wider plan to build an economy that is far more productive, more efficient, and more globally connected than ever before.

The Government set a target of achieving a surplus following the earthquakes in Christchurch four years ago. its 18th consecutive quarter of expansion to deliver annual growth of 2.4 per cent in June 2015.

We’ve also had 11 straight quarters of job growth, with 69,000 more jobs in the last year.

The average annual wage is now over $57,000 for the first time – that’s $10,000 more than in 2008.

We’ve recorded five years of positive household savings – the first time this has happened in a generation. Very low interest rates are helping households and businesses.

Our country has high labour market participation and a near-

record high employment rate.

We’ve just successfully completed the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement – New Zealand’s biggest ever trade deal – which is expected to benefit our economy by $2.7 billion by 2030.

This year we’ve also signed a free trade deal with Korea.

This means we now have free trade agreements with our top five trading partners: Australia, China, United States, Japan and Korea.

We’re rolling out ultra-fast broadband across New Zealand, investing in infrastructure, and in research and development.

We’re also putting more money back in New Zealanders’ pockets through ACC levy cuts of almost $500 million over the next two years.

That’s on top of the $1.5 billion by which we have already reduced levies since 2012.

The outlook continues to be for ongoing moderate growth delivering jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders.

By sticking with our economic plan and working to secure a bright future for all New Zealanders, we can continue to build on the good progress we’ve made over the past seven years.

Car smashes into crowd A speeding car crashed into a crowd watching a parade in Oklahoma at the weekend, killing four people, including a two-year-old boy.

The driver, a 25-year-old woman identified by police as Adacia Avery Chambers, was arrested for driving under the influence after the crash at an Oklahoma State University (OSU) homecoming parade.

In an evening update, police in the town of Stillwater said a total of 44 people were also injured, double the number previously given.

They had previously indicated that eight of the injured were in critical condition.

“Oklahoma State University is devastated by today’s tragedy and extends its thoughts and prayers to the families of those who perished or were injured,” OSU president Burns Hargis said in a statement.

“We are shocked and heartbroken by this horrible tragedy.

The Oklahoma State University Homecoming parade is the most wholesome of events and to have it marred in such a way is incomprehensible.”

The boy “died of injuries sustained in the collision” at hospital, the Stillwater Police Department said in a statement.

Another three people were killed on the scene.

Police have yet to identify the victims. The Stillwater News Press quoted one witness as saying that, at first, people thought the car was part of the show. But then panic ensued.

“People were flying 30 feet (10 metres) into the air like rag dolls,” the newspaper quoted Konda Walker as saying.

Police Captain Kyle Gibbs told reporters that an accident reconstruction team was sent to the scene and that the probe into what happened would be treated as a homicide investigation.

Governor Mary Fallin, using the hashtag “OklahomaStrong,” announced on Twitter that she was headed to Stillwater and that multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in determining what led to the incident.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tragic events at @okstate today,” she tweeted.

The university said it will have counsellors on site for employees and students on Monday to help assist them through the tragedy.

However, officials decided to still host the homecoming game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Kansas Jayhawks.

Many US colleges and universities hold homecoming festivities - annual celebrations for past and current students.

Balkan leaders threaten border closures Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia have threatened to close their borders if EU countries stop accepting migrants, as European leaders prepare for a mini summit on the continent’s worst refugee crisis since World War Two. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov yesterday said the three countries wanted a Europewide solution to the crisis but were not prepared to become a “buffer zone” for the tens of thou-

sands of new arrivals.

The Bulgarian, Romanian and Serbian premiers held talks in Sofia on the eve of a meeting called by European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker, who has been urging a cross-border approach to the crisis, which has seen 670,000 people arrive on Europe’s shores this year.

The influx has prompted EU member Hungary to close its borders with Serbia and Croatia

to halt the flow of new arrivals, and Slovenia has threatened to do likewise.

Borisov and his Serbian and Romanian counterparts said the best solution was commonlyagreed action across Europe, but warned that if other EU countries followed Hungary’s lead, they would have to act.

“All three countries, we are ready if Germany and Austria and other countries close their

borders (...) we will be ready to also close our borders at that very same moment,” Borisov said after the talks with his Romanian and Serbian counterparts.

Over past months nonEU member Serbia has been swamped by migrants on their way from Greece and Macedonia to northern Europe, though Bulgaria and Romania have so far largely remained on the sidelines of the influx.

Hurricane Patricia flattens Mexico homes Patricia flattened dozens of homes on Mexico’s Pacific coast, but authorities say the record-breaking hurricane largely spared the country as it weakened to a tropical depression.

Dozens of modest homes in the village of Chemula were blown away by Patricia’s powerful winds after it made landfall in Jalisco state late Friday.

The villagers survived the hurricane because they evacuated before landfall, which occurred just 20km to the south.

Officials said no casualties have been reported.

“So far, there are no reports of major damage from #Patricia. Our gratitude to all for your thoughts, prayers and actions #PrayForMexico,” President Enrique Pena Nieto wrote on Twitter.

Patricia tore down trees, triggered some flooding and caused

minor landslides elsewhere in Jalisco and neighbouring Colima state.

In Jalisco, which bore the brunt of the hurricane, some rivers rose, damaging a bridge and some 250 homes in one community of 600 people, said state government secretary general Roberto Lopez Lara.

“All the forecasts predicted the worst,” Lopez Lara said. “We do not have any deaths.”

But authorities urged Mexicans to remain on alert as Patricia continued to produce rain on its path north.

Patricia gradually lost steam as it moved further inland overnight, but a “heavy rain threat continues”, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

Forecasters had warned of a “potential catastrophe” after Patricia’s winds peaked at 325km/h on Friday.

Armed with a broom A worker at a pizza shop near Brisbane has scared off four masked bandits with a broom.

The four men were armed with what appeared to be a replica firearm when they demanded cash from staff at the Bundamba store in Ipswich on Saturday night.

But they took off empty-handed when a brave staff member ran at them with a broom.

Ferris wheel fall Three teenage girls have been injured, one seriously, in a fall from a ferris wheel in Sydney’s southwest. Emergency services were called to the scene at the YMCA Fun Park in Memorial Avenue, Liverpool about 5.10pm yesterday. A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said one girl suffered pelvic and arm injuries and was rushed to the Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Two girls were taken to the Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition, one with arm injuries and one with rib injuries.

It’s not yet clear how the accident happened.

Arrest over bomb Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been arrested over last month’s alleged attempt to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen in a bomb blast on board his speedboat. Adeeb’s dramatic arrest at the Maldives’ main international airport at the weekend followed “extensive investigations by both local and international agencies,” the government said in a statement posted on the website of its high commission in New Delhi. “The charges are extremely serious, and the government has had to act decisively,” it said, without saying whether the vice-president had been formally charged. Home Minister Umar Naseer earlier posted on Twitter that Adeeb was in detention on Dhoonidhoo prison island. “Charges: high treason,” he tweeted.

Tony Blair has apologised for aspects of the Iraq War, sparking claims of attempted “spin” ahead of the Chilcot Inquiry findings.

The former British prime minister used a US television interview to express regret over the failure to plan properly for the aftermath of the 2003 toppling of Saddam Hussein and the false intelligence used to justify it. “I apologise for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong,” he told CNN. “I also apologise for some of the mistakes in planning and, certainly, our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you removed the regime.”

Castle links secrets, treasure, ghost I

f you are fascinated by World War Two secrets, treasures and ghosts, then Ksiaz Castle is the place for you.

A breathtaking site, it sits on a wooded hilltop in the city of Walbrzych, in southwestern Poland.

The area drew worldwide attention recently, when two explorers announced they had located a secret tunnel that hides a wartime armoured train with a precious load.

The news revived a local legend of a train laden with gold and valuables that the Nazis reportedly hid from the Red Army in the mountains in 1945.

The authorities are taking steps to verify the explorers’ claim, but the former coal mining centre of Walbrzych (known as Waldenburg in its German era) and the castle are already the richer for the tourists and reporters whose numbers soared after the news of the alleged find broke.

Even without the train and the gold, visitors will enjoy the beauty of the Owl Mountains in the Sudeten Range, the area’s rich and dramatic history and a visit to the magnificent Ksiaz Castle.

Many of the historic interiors were torn down in a misconceived drive for modesty. The Nazis then began to build a bunker some 50 metres beneath the castle to protect Hitler from Allied bombs.

Eventually a labyrinth of tunnels and bunkers was built using forced labour from the nearby Gross-Rosen concentration camp, but the complex was not completed by the war’s end and its true purpose remains a mystery 70 years after the war.

Some historians say the complex was to become Nazi command headquarters, others believe the tunnels were to house an armaments factory or a nuclear weapons laboratory.

Some of the tall, damp tunnels can be visited by tourists, but many remain unexplored.

The legend of a hidden gold train was first brought to light by a retired coal miner, Tadeusz

Slowikowski, in the 1970s, but it’s been kept alive by the mysteries surrounding the complex.

The massive gray and pink castle links many architectural styles, dating back to the 13th century and to Slavic rulers. It passed into Austrian and then Prussian hands and was known as Schloss Furstenstein, while repeatedly being expanded, the last time in the early 20th century.

It was private property of the aristocratic Hochberg family since the early 16th century, until the Nazis seized it in order to punish the Hochbergs who did not support Hitler.

When borders shifted after World War Two, this Lower Silesia region became part of Poland.

The castle’s last owner, evicted by the Nazis, was Wales-born Mary Theresa Olivia CornwallisWest, first wife of Prince Hans Heinrich XV. Bearing the title of the Princess of Pless, but popularly known as

As a result, Princess Daisy’s resting place remains unknown.

It’s another castle mystery with its own legend — that her spirit comes back to visit.

Nervous wait for McCaw Richie McCaw faces a nervous day in London as he waits to see if his place in the Rugby World Cup final is confirmed.

The hottest post-match subject after the All Blacks’ tense 20-18 semi-final win over South Africa yesterday was whether World Rugby would cite the All Blacks skipper for alleged foul play in using an elbow in a collision with Springbok loosie Francois Louw.

As the All Blacks left Twickenham to return to their London hotel, World Rugby’s citing commissioner had not acted.

However, tournament rules say he can wait up until 36 hours after a match has finished before laying a charge.

That leaves until approximately 6pm today New Zealand time for any action to be taken.

All of New Zealand will be as anxious as McCaw, head coach Steve Hansen and his teammates to see whether the inspirational flanker is deemed to have deliberately elbowed Louw and is denied a chance to play his last game for the All Blacks and lead New Zealand to back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

It would be a travesty if the semi-final was to be McCaw’s last on-field act as an All Black - and it would be a brave citing commis-

sioner and judiciary panel that would sideline one of the game’s premier players and role models for such a showpiece game.

As he ran toward a ruck, 22 minutes into yesterday’s last four showdown, McCaw’s elbow appeared to make contact with Louw’s head.

Owens to ref final

Louw did not appear to be injured and did not react to the blow. He got up straight after falling and joined the next ruck where he then stood on the back of Aaron Smith.

Louw, blood flowing from his forehead, later left the field to go to the blood bin in the 29th minute but he was not bleeding after the McCaw incident and the wound appears to have happened in another incident.

He returned later with a bandage on his head and finished the game with two wounds to his forehead requiring a total of 20 stitches.

When asked how he received the cuts, the English-based flanker said: “I’m not sure, I think it was at the bottom of a ruck”.

Striking with the elbow - which falls under law 10.4a of dangerous play and misconduct - has a low end sanction of a two-week suspension.

After the match, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen praised 147test veteran McCaw for his experience and impact on the game: “We’ve probably got the greatest skipper in the game, and probably the greatest player we’ve ever seen.”

All Blacks selector Grant Fox has revealed the squad has been told that Welshman Nigel Owens will referee the World Cup final. The All Blacks will be delighted with the news, set to be officially revealed within the next 48 hours, believing Owens is overwhelmingly the world’s best whistle-blower but also - crucially - that he polices the breakdown in a superior manner to any other referee. Fox said World Rugby officials had told the All Blacks before the semis that Owens would handle the decider for the Webb Ellis Trophy at Twickenham next Sunday.

Penalties a concern The All Blacks are in the World Cup final but have resolved to quickly look at why they came second to South Africa in terms of penalties conceded in their nailbiting semi-final victory at Twickenham.

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer revealed afterwards that it was his intention to put pressure on the All Blacks in order for them to not only make mistakes, but also concede penalties, and Steve Hansen’s men finished way behind on that scorecard, conceding 13 to the Boks’ six. In the first half they conceded nine penalties to the Boks’ three, including the sinbinning of flanker Jerome Kaino after he kicked the ball away when in an offside position.

Ferns finally win one

By Dana Johannsen Casey Kopua was worried her 100-test milestone might prove a “jinx” on her Silver Ferns side.

The inspirational New Zealand skipper didn’t want to talk about reaching the magical century mark ahead of yesterday’s third Constellation Cup test in Melbourne for fear disaster might strike.

Maybe there was something to her superstitious approach, as the Ferns yesterday recorded their first Constellation Cup victory since September 2013, pulling off a rollicking 50-47 come from behind win over Australia.

But more likely it was the absence of Australian supershooter Caitlin Bassett in the second half, rather than Kopua’s caution not to tempt the netballing gods, that proved the difference for the Ferns.

Trailing by six goals at the first break, and by as many as nine early on in the second spell, it looked as though the third test was going to go much the same way as the first two matches - convincing wins to the Diamonds.

But a host of changes to the Diamonds attack end in the second

half worked to disrupt Australia’s momentum, and the Ferns seized the advantage.

Australian coach Lisa Alexander opted to bench the 1.93m Bassett - a key target in the back for the Diamonds - in the second half, as she looked to build depth in her squad.

Bassett’s replacement, Caitlin Thwaites, struggled to assert herself on the proceedings, with Kopua and Katrina Grant doing a good job of disrupting the connections in the Australian attack end to force further changes to the opposition line-up heading into the final quarter having leveled the score at 36-all.

Guilty of dropping their intensity in the late stages of the opening two tests, the Ferns did not make the same mistake yesterday, maintaining their composure down the home stretch to secure a three-goal victory.

Kopua, who is tipped to retire at the end of the season, was delighted to bring up her 100th test with a win over their transtasman rivals - something that has become increasingly rare of late.

“Something like that is usually a jinx, or on us it seems to be. I’ll certainly never forget this test,” she said.

NZ skipper Casey Kopua “I think to keep the composure and the changes that they put up against us I think we coped really well .”

Asked what the difference was in her side’s performance yesterday, out-going New Zealand coach Waimarama Taumaunu was realistic.

“Bassett not on the court,” she said.

But Taumaunu said she was pleased with the way her side

held their nerve in the pressurefilled final minutes, with New Zealand scoring five of the last seven goals.

Australian coach Lisa Alexander insisted the decision to bench Bassett at halftime was not a pre-planned move, claiming the 54-test veteran was suffering from a foot injury.

Alexander said her team are “devastated” they were not able to close out the win after leading by six goals at halftime.

“We should have and could have gone on with it in the second half and didn’t.

“It was very disappointing. I think we lost our connections, we made a lot of changes and that’s what can happen when you make a lot of changes.”

She was hopeful her star shooter would be back in action in the final test in Perth on Friday.

“I think we need her out there at the moment.”

The Ferns win technically keeps the 2015 series alive heading into the final test, but with Australia holding a healthy advantage in goal differential courtesy of convincing wins in Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand’s chances of snatching the trophy appear remote.

Blair limps out of test Issac Luke may go from cocaptain to sole skipper for the Kiwis’ first test against England, with Adam Blair unlikely to be available for next weekend’s match in Hull. Injuries to Blair (calf) and Jordan Kahu (groin) dampened celebrations after a solid 34-16 win over Leeds at Headingley. Blair’s injury is thought to be the more serious and he is likely to miss at least one, and possibly two, of the tests against England. It’s tough on the 29-year-old, who is coming off a career-best season with the Broncos and was revelling in the chance to captain his country, and will leave Alex Glenn and Lewis Brown jostling for the final interchange spot.

Courtney back in style By his own admission the past nine weeks have been “horrendous” for V8 Supercars star James Courtney.

That’s what makes his victory in the 300km race on the Gold Coast yesterday so special. The Holden star has battled constant, crippling pain since a freak accident in the pitlane at Sydney in August.

Only cleared to return to driving last week, Courtney masterminded a win for the ages with a bold strategy play in the 102-lap race.

Courtney pitted on lap 58 for a splash of fuel to take him to the race finish. The call paid off as Courtney’s rivals ahead of him pitted one by one, allowing him to secure his second win of the season ahead of Nissan’s Rick Kelly and Holden Racing Team stablemate Garth Tander.

Cantabs claim yet another ITM title By anDrew alDerson Any ‘Dear Santa’ letters demanding a fast, free-flowing and riveting conclusion to the domestic season had their wishes granted.

Canterbury were ultimately the beneficiaries of any North Pole generosity, seizing a 25-23 victory and their seventh title in eight years.

But the match came down to the last play of the game.

A Mark Coyne Queensland state-of-origin miracle was still an option after Canterbury turned down two late shots at goal and pinned Auckland inside their deadball line with time up.

Auckland replacement halfback Jono Hickey stole the ball from Mitchell Drummond at the base of the subsequent scrum.

The dream of a first title in eight years flickered for a moment, before the hosts gathered them-

selves and doused the flame.

Sometimes the match had all the structural integrity of the Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom rope swing bridge but, regardless, delivered an intravenous drip of pure entertainment.

It reflected why New Zealand rugby, through its ITM Cup nursery, still holds a strategic advantage over the rest of the world.

In essence it boiled down to pace.

Yes, there were defensive errors, particularly through desperation at the breakdown from both sides, but running rugby in the Christchurch twilight was a worthy by-product.

The sequence which led to Canterbury second-five Rob Thompson knocking-on in the 50th minute after hooker Ben Funnell chipped with pinpoint accuracy was one such moment

Canterbury’s Dominic Bird as both sides ebbed and flowed with attacking verve.

Auckland demonstrated ample flair in the first half, but Canterbury seized their counter-attacking opportunities to extend to a 19-7 lead.

Auckland could have folded but, composed and intent, persevered their way back into the contest.

The visitors immediately felt pressure when Patrick Osborne

bullocked across down the lefthand touch from a move which had the Canterbury backs attacking the line with confidence.

Dominic Bird then charged through a flimsy Auckland lineout defensive structure to score from what looked like a training practice move in slow-mo.

Ryan Crotty continued to make a case for being the unluckiest All Black as he scythed across later off an inside pass.

Simon Hickey drew Auckland back through three timely penalties.

Canterbury had dominance at the scrum but, with the packs only taking their first hit in the 27th minute, their impact was minimised on Auckland.

In brief Tech take T20 title Tech Stags took a four wicket victory over Allenton to win the Mid Canterbury Open Grade T20 title on Saturday. Stags secured a place in the final with a narrow four run win over a plucky Lauriston, while Allenton snuck through due to a superior run rate than Lauriston.

In the final, Allenton won the toss and elected to bat and were all out for 136 in the 18th over with Tom Meyrick (32) top scoring off his 18 balls. Tech chased down Allenton’s total in the 19th over with four wickets remaining, Matt Winter posted 61 to top score.

Good workout for NZ Mission accomplished for New Zealand’s batsmen in the second Australian tour match in Canberra yesterday. After the bowlers had their workout against the Chairman’s XI a day earlier, as the hosts made 325 for four declared, New Zealand reached 368 for eight before the two-dayer ended. College wraps up outright win

Day two of two at the Ashburton Domain saw Riccarton High School successfully end College’s first innings quickly, with Josh Paul dismissing Josh Buchanan to leave the home side all out for 174 and a first innings advantage of 102.

Buchanan set about making inroads in to Riccarton’s reply, causing opener Josh Daly to send a catch to skipper Kieran Hunt at cover.

Buchanan then sent fellow

opener Tim Bridgman back to the pavilion.

Hunt brought himself on and had instant success to remove Ben Bridgman for one run before Buchanan took his third wicket of the day, finding an edge for Ben Niles to take the catch at third slip to remove Jonty Hunter.

Riccarton were four wickets down with few runs on the board, but the middle order dug in as the College fielders were unable to cling on to some difficult catches.

Having put on 50 runs, the partnership of James Rennie and Josh Paul was finally broken when Gareth Hunt took a fine catch at mid-wicket off the bowling of Connor O’Grady to dismiss Paul.

Rennie then continued his resistance, and eventually topscored with 67 before he ran out of partners.

O’Grady took two more wickets, dismissing Ethan Ng for a duck before Tom Ravenscroft caught Max Connolly.

Six more test for Bazza’s big milestone By andrew alderson With his testimony in Chris Cairns’ London High Court perjury trial behind him, the stage is set for Brendon McCullum to seal his leadership legacy.

The New Zealand captain sits on 94 consecutive tests and, if his irritable back permits, will become the first cricketer to play 100 in succession when he faces Australia at Wellington in February.

This, alongside his triple test century and leading New Zealand to their first Cricket World Cup final, will headline his exit scroll.

However, the cement to bind those feats is just as important.

McCullum, in partnership with coach Mike Hesson, has led New Zealand to seven consecutive undefeated test series.

He has galvanised his players into competing consistently against the world’s best and helped reassure the public that cricket justifies its tag as “The Summer Game”.

McCullum’s record of nine wins from 24 tests (37.50 per cent) makes him New Zealand’s most successful test captain by win percentage.

Geoff Howarth had 11 from 30 (36.67 per cent) and Stephen Fleming 28 from 80 (35 per cent).

In 2014, New Zealand won five tests, including three away, making it their most successful calendar year.

At the end of the England tour, McCullum surmised what his future might hold, given his fragile back is put through a painkillersupplemented regime to prepare for each game.

“We’ve scaled some heights

that hadn’t been done before by our country and we’re starting to build a soul to how we play,” he said.

“I’m lucky enough to be in a position of leadership to give guys the freedom to play that brand. I’ve enjoyed the last two years.

“The body’s a bit sore but we’ll see what happens.”

Next month’s Australian tour presents an opportunity to crown his test career, followed by a home summer encore.

Victory would also provide an inspirational yardstick for other countries competing against Australia, India and England - the Big Three.

New Zealand’s last series in 2011 brought victory in Hobart.

It came as a shock, given the theme of inconsistency surrounding it.

Such frailties have reduced with the maturity of players such as Kane Williamson, BJ Watling, Tim Southee and Trent Boult (who debuted in Hobart).

Their talent is supplemented by the experience of Ross Taylor, the promise of Tom Latham, Mark Craig, Jimmy Neesham and Matt Henry, and the resurgence of Doug Bracewell and Martin Guptill.

To put McCullum’s longevity in context, only four players - Allan Border, Alastair Cook, Mark Waugh and Sunil Gavaskar - have played more than 100 consecutive tests at any stage of their careers (153, 119 and counting, 107 and 106 respectively).

He can boost that quantity by continuing to deliver leadership and run-scoring quality for his team.

New Zealand A batsman Henry Nicholls has again got among the runs against Sri Lanka A, hitting an unbeaten century in the teams’ second and final first-class cricket match. Nicholls was on 104 at stumps on day two, having helped his side to 402-3 and a first innings lead of 99 runs. The home side’s batsmen then racked up a total of 272-2 to take a lead of 474 into the third day.

Juniors up for finals day

The Ashburton Trust Junior Open is raging on, with the majority of age-group finals set to be played today.

More than 130 players are competing, and 15 of those are from Mid Canterbury.

So far, the boys’ 10s were won by Blake Cullen, who beat local player Jonathan Rollinson 3-5, 0-4 in the final. Rollinson has been in fine form despite the final loss with three singles wins and a doubles victory.

Ava Williman took out the girls’ 11s section with a final win over Amelia Newlands 6-4, 2-6, 13-11 while the Girls’ 16 final saw Caroline Murdoch down Ilana Goossens 4-6, 2-6.

The girls’ 11s doubles were taken out by Amelia Newlands and Amelia McKeown, who toppled Zara Coberger Taite and Ava Willimann 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, local starlet Tessa McCann is flying the Mid Canterbury flag at the TNZ Junior Masters Top Eight Finals in Christchurch to qualify for the Australian Individual and Teams Nationals in Melbourne in December.

McCann downed Sarah Weekley 6-1, 6-4 in her opening match on Saturday before taking a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Ema Miyaura.

Yesterday McCann fell to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 loss to Tharubphet Homkrun, but qualified for the top four playoffs, finishing in second place in her group behind Homkrun, who was unbeaten in Pool A. Ko regains top spot Lydia Ko has returned to the top of the world golf rankings in imperious fashion with a dominant nineshot victory in the LPGA Taiwan Championship.

The 18-year-old New Zealander fired a seven-under 65 yesterday to end on 20-under as she continued her stellar recent form.

Ko has now claimed three wins in her past five starts, and has placed outside the top four only once in her last eight tournaments.

The victory in Taipei was also her 10th on the LPGA Tour, making her the youngest player to get to double figures.

Ko headed into the final day knowing that finishing runner-up would be enough for her to regain the world No.1 ranking, supplanting South Korean Inbee Park.

Composure gets ABs home

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY A brilliant show of composure from the All Blacks has allowed them to hold off the Springboks in a gripping World Cup semi-final in which either team could have won in the final seconds.

Steve Hansen’s men are in the final and with a show of defending their title after an unbelievably tense match.

The Springboks, who got to this point with their narrow win over Wales in the quarter-final, put in a typically defiant performance and almost, almost did it.

The All Blacks had to survive the sinbinning of loose forward Jerome Kaino two minutes from halftime, but they hung in there, just as the Boks did when Bryan

Habana was yellow carded in the second half for a cynical slap down when the All Blacks were on attack.

This was an excruciating match to watch for the All Blacks supporters in the crowd of 80,000 and there were a lot of them.

Memories from the final of four years ago were never far away.

And while they scored the only tries of the match - through Kaino in the right corner in the first half and Beauden Barrett in the left corner in the second, they simply couldn’t break free.

Time and again the Boks came back, helped in part by the mistakes of the All Blacks but also the almost constant whistle of Jerome Garces.

The penalty count was 9-3 to the Boks in the first half, and while

the All Blacks were beginning to win the kicking duel, the South Africans’ defence kept them in it.

It was desperate and at times brutal stuff.

With the All Blacks behind 7-12 at the break, and with Kaino, things were looking a little dicey, but the men in black never wavered.

A brilliant dropped goal from Dan Carter from a messy lineout was a timely boost.

Like his team-mates, Carter didn’t reach the heights of last weekend’s fiesta against France, but his goalkicking was excellent he missed only one shot - and his tactical kicking allowed his side to gradually gain the upper hand.

At 20-15 and Sonny Bill Williams beginning to cause mayhem

after replacing Ma’a Nonu, the All Blacks looked set for the win.

Barrett’s try, brilliantly converted by Carter, was good value for the All Blacks’ advantage in territory and possession, but Pat Lambie’s penalty narrowed the gap and then Sam Cane knocked the ball on to shift the pressure back on his side.

Unfortunately for the loose forward, on for Kaino, he did it again as the All Blacks ran down the final minutes. Luckily for him and his team, they survived.

These two teams are close off the field - they will share a beer after this armwrestle, but on it they are the fiercest of enemies.

Skipper Richie McCaw complained of being grabbed around the neck, and Schalk Burger was

penalised for a shoulder charge on Ma’a Nonu.

The All Blacks reserves again provided the impetus for this victory - just as they did all those weeks ago in their first pool match against Argentina.

But they couldn’t have got far without fullback Ben Smith, an absolute champion for his side with his handling under the high ball as the rain set in on a cold and damp afternoon.

They didn’t provide the fireworks of last weekend in Cardiff, but they are in the final, and that’s all that matters.
