Exam prep cuts ‘illogical’ BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury teenagers could lose up to a week of teaching time next year – and the district’s two secondary school principals are fuming. The Guardian can reveal the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) is considering extending the NCEA exam period by a further day, which could
see students losing a whole week of exam preparation. When approached by the Guardian, NZQA assessment deputy chief executive Richard Thornton yesterday confirmed the organisation was currently consulting with schools across the country over a proposal to extend the NCEA examination period in 2015. The extended timetable would
see the first exams, Level 1 Mathematics and Level 2 English, taking place on Friday, November 6, a week earlier than the start of this year’s exam period. However, Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said despite the ministry’s claim that it was consulting with schools, he had received no formal word about the proposal. Mr McMillan said the propos-
al “just doesn’t make sense”. “It just means that teachers have to cram more in, and it means the nature of classes and courses will change,” he said. “We’ll have more assessments at the same time as each other, everything just gets compacted.” Any change could also see schools facing a logistical nightmare over dates for school
prizegivings and end of year events. Mr McMillan said despite asking NZQA for the reasons behind the proposed change, none were forthcoming. “Maybe they don’t like working Christmas and New Year’s Eve, I don’t know,” he said. “It smells like a rat, and it’s starting to look like a rat.” Continued on Page 3 Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
