Council ‘keen to find solution’ BY SUE NEWMAN

Weather a challenge P24
While it might take time to hammer out a land deal with St John, the Ashburton District Council is totally supportive of the work the organisation does in the community, says council chief executive Hamish Riach. He’s concerned that the council’s support for the organisation had become buried in the public debate over the future of a council-owned section at the rear of St John’s Tancred Street property. St John has had informal access across the council’s sections for many years and the council wanted this to continue. The issue of if, and how, this land was sold was just part of the bigger picture, Riach said.
“We’ve been totally supportive of them in the past and we’ll continue to be supportive, it’s just about the specifics of how we do this. We need to find the right way.” St John requested guaranteed right of way across the council’s section well into the future because it was extending its headquarters and needed the access for returning vehicles. reaction to St John’s plight and Riach is concerned the council is seen as being obstructive. It was not, he said. “We’re going to find a way to make this work. The community should know that the council is fully supportive of St John and the work they continue to do in the Ashburton District. We’re simply trying to find the best way to help St John, but it has to be the right way.” There had been many discussions over many years with St John over access across the council’s section and both parties were motivated to find the right solution for the future, he said. The council will receive a full report on the status of the land and future options at its finance and business support committee meeting on Thursday.
