A Methven mother caught in the middle of an incident that saw an Air New Zealand passenger arrested on Wednesday night is having mixed emotions about the entire experience. Becky Dirks was travelling back from Auckland to Christchurch with her son, David, when a woman caused major disruptions during the flight, including allegedly spitting at a stewardess. The 32-year-old woman was arrested upon landing in Christchurch and charged with assault as well as being issued with a Civil Aviation Authority infringement notice which carries an instant $500 fine.
For Dirks, the entire ordeal, which made national news, was one which could have easily been avoided in her eyes. “We saw her when we were sitting in the lounge in Auckland waiting to board and she was lying on the floor mumbling to herself,” she said. “I’m not sure what was exactly going on with her, but it seemed as though she was under the influence. “She shouldn’t have been allowed on the flight, based on what I saw anyway.” While the initial observation was odd, things got even weirder once the plane was up in the air and about half way through the trip to Christchurch. “I took David to the toilet and when we walked back past her she called out
and said that David had dropped some lollies. “I told her that it was rubbish and when a stewardess went to pick it up she started swearing and throwing abuse around.” The tirade continued for the remainder of the flight with members of the public and flight staff attempting to calm the passenger down but when it came time to prepare for landing, she remained upstanding and started yelling and screaming again on descent.
