With an influx of winter visitors soon to descend on Mid Canterbury, St John ambulance services are in need of more volunteers. Mid Canterbury territory manager Ian Rex said the demand on local services was increasing, with an estimated 17,000 ski passes sold for Mt Hutt this season, the demand for the service would ramp up. Up to 200 extra workers are also anticipated to descend on Methven to staff the mountain and hospitality businesses. “There are challenges with recruiting volunteers, but also an increased workload putting more demand on services,
in line with national trends,” he said. Nationally, between 2014 and 2015 the ambulance service dealt with 17,020 more calls than the previous year. In Methven there was a 6 per cent increase in demand. “Volunteers are needed now if we are going to keep on top of the increase and distribute the workload evenly,” Mr Rex said. The majority of volunteers are also in paid employment and the increasing number of ambulance call-outs is putting pressure on businesses. St John’s Mid Canterbury service covers the area north of the Rangitata River and includes stations in Ashburton, Methven, Mayfield, Leeston, Rolleston

and Darfield, stretching into the ranges beyond Arthurs Pass. Of those only Ashburton and Rolleston have paid staff members on daytime duty. Ashburton operates with paid staff at night, while Rolleston is staffed by one paid staff member and a volunteer, with a second ambulance on call. “The rest of the stations are totally reliant on volunteers day and night,” Mr Rex said. “I would like to see more volunteers in all our stations to lighten the load on existing volunteers.”
