Methven farmer close to bombings

A Mid Canterbury farmer and consultant found himself in the middle of the devastating terrorist bombings in Brussels this week as he attended a leadership conference.

Methven man Richard Fitzgerald was attending the conference in the Central Business District, in the European Union (EU) Parliament area just a few kilometres away from an horrific explosion at the Maalbeek Metro Station.

The blast followed two explosions including a suicide bomber at the Zaventem Airport just one hour prior to the Metro bombings.

A third bomb did not detonate.

Up to 34 people are believed to have been killed by the Islamic State and 200 injured.

His phone turned off while he attended the conference, Mr Fitzgerald was told of the deadly attacks not long after they oc-

curred and turned on his phone at the next break to find a barrage of worried text messages from home as to his whereabouts.

“I rang straight away. Everyone was pretty anxious.”

Because many United Nations and EU officials were also attending the conference, Mr Fitzgerald said he was possibly in the safest part of the city with high levels of security already in place for the important dignitaries.

He described the atmosphere as being one of “awkward normalness” with police and army heavily present on the streets.

“We were told not leave the hotel and not to go out on the streets.

All through the night sirens were wailing at regular intervals. You’re certainly aware it’s an uneasy situation but I don’t feel at risk.”

While the people were subdued, Mr Fitzgerald thought there was a quiet determination emerging to not let the attacks dictate how

Belgians were going to live their lives despite the recognition that the Islamic State has threatened more incidents.

“I’m grateful because I’m getting out of this situation and heading back to New Zealand but for these guys it’s their new reality.”

The attacks had reminded him of how lucky we are in New Zealand, he said.

“It’s hard times for dairy farmers back home and things aren’t always perfect but when you’re confronted with something so graphic it puts everything into perspective.”

Mr Fitzgerald arrived in Brussels on Monday via the Eurostar train and was starting his long journey home on the same train this weekend.

He said he didn’t hold any safety concerns about travelling as Eurostar security was already at the same level as airport customs and everyone was on high alert.

Former principal Gavin Cooper, who left last year, has not yet been replaced.

Schools around the country find it difficult to attract principals but that shouldn’t be the case for Ashburton Intermediate School, board of trustees chairman Mike Farrell says.

The school has been looking for a principal since Gavin Cooper left in September last year.

Mr Farrell said it was a shame that they had not found a principal yet but it was hard for all schools.

Looking at the Education Gazette shows just how many vacancies for principals and deputy principals there were around the country, he said.

“Schools haven’t been able to attract principals for a long time.

“It’s really, really sad to see this in education.”

The school is planning a number of exciting developments in the next few years.

While he could not divulge the details of most projects, they are on the cusp of bringing BYOD into the school, he said.

“It’s going to be really interesting.”

The school is also growing and will continue to evolve in exciting new ways, Mr Farrell said.

Nationally principals have expressed concerns about intermediate schools but they are perfect transitional institutions for Year 7 and 8 students, he said.

Man dies in collision A Canterbury man has died after a single vehicle collision near Mayfield yesterday morning.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to the scene on Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road near the bridge

by Mayfield at about 9.10am.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis, of Ashburton, said the crash was likely to have happened between 1.30am and 9.10am yesterday.

The collision occurred after a vehicle, with only one occupant, ran off the road, down and bank and into a tree in a rest area.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated and the deceased’s name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

The scene is off the state highway, which remained open to traffic.

Voters split locally on change of flag

How did Mid Canterbury people react to the outcome of the flag referendum?

“I voted for the old flag so I’m very pleased with the result. It’s absolutely ridiculous spending that amount of money on a flag. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. We could spend the money better elsewhere. The old flag is part of New Zealand’s heritage, veterans fought under that flag.

Sheldon Kirton:

“I didn’t vote because I was away but I wanted to keep the old one. It’s just what represents New Zealand. It always has been that flag and I don’t see what the point is in changing it. It has also cost a lot to have the referendum.”

Tia Noble:

“I voted for the old flag. I didn’t like the way they went about doing it. The way it was done was not good because nobody really asked for us to have a vote.

I wouldn’t mind a change but I didn’t like the new alternative.”

Loman Samson:

“I voted for the old flag because I didn’t like the new one. I just felt it didn’t represent our country.

The original flag has the history behind it, our grandfathers all fought for that flag.

Also the cost of the referendum was too much.”

Mid Canterbury residents were nearly evenly split in their flag preference with 51.6 per cent of people in the Rangitata electorate voting to keep the current flag and 48.2 per cent wanting change.

The preliminary results were released on Thursday night with a slightly higher national margin of 56.6 per cent of voters wanting status quo and 43.2 per cent opting for the Silver Fern alternative.

The voter turnout for the Rangitata electorate was 75 per cent as opposed to a national turnout of 67.3 per cent.

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew said although she voted for change she was pleased with the high turnout of voters from this electorate.

“I’m delighted there was such a strong turnout. That really means it was worthwhile spending the money on giving people the choice.

“I’m pleased that people used the democracy available to them … I think that it never hurts a country to work out what they feel strongly about.”

Ashburton mayor Angus McKay said it was good for people to be able to have the conversation about such an important subject.

“I think it’s great that the people of New Zealand had a chance to choose their flag.”

The official result for the second referendum will be announced at about 5pm on Wednesday.

Prime Minister John Key said he was disappointed New Zealanders voted to keep the current flag but promised his Government will not revisit the issue.

He said the referendum process, which cost $26 million, had sparked an “enormous”, healthy debate across the country. “You can’t shy away from a debate or a discussion about nationhood.”

“I voted to keep the same flag because I work for the RSA. I just thought that because people fought for that flag we should retain it. I didn’t see anything wrong with it.

I thought the new design was okay but the cost of that exercise could have been spent on better things like health and education.”

The march started at Our Lady of the Snows and made its way to St John’s Presbyterian Church and the Mount Hutt Elim Church before finishing at the All Saints Anglican Church with a service and morning tea.

Farmers warned to lock gear

Thousands of dollars worth of farm gear and vehicles were stolen in two separate rural burglaries in Mid Canterbury overnight on Tuesday.

The thefts – which included five motorbikes and a mule have prompted Ashburton Police sergeant Bryan Ennis to urge farmers not to make criminals’ lives easy.

“Some of the motorbikes taken, I believe the keys may have been left in them. They need to be locked away,” Mr Ennis said.

He urged farmers to look at their farm’s security and lock

things away, and in particular, not leave keys in vehicles; a message police were constantly trying to get across to no avail.

The two properties targeted overnight on Tuesday were in Eiffelton and Pendarves.

At the Pendarves address a maroon 2015 Kawasaki Mule 400 (right), a white and black 2014 Suzuki DR200 two wheeled dirt bike, and a blue and black Yamaha AG100 motorbike were taken, along with a Husqvarna XP90 orange chainsaw, a plastic tool box containing hand tools, two fence reels and 20 standards.

was taken, along with two white 2013 Suzuki DR300s. The unregistered bikes were taken from an open shed.

Mr Ennis said people needed to make it difficult for criminals.

Methven is hosting its annual Mountain Thunder motorcyce street racing event and it’s set to be loud, and action packed.

It’s an event full of spectacle, noise and excitement, as a variety of classes of motorcycles race around a 1km circuit in the town centre at speeds up to 200km/h; it will take just 32-34 seconds for many to complete the circuit.

There will be pre-classics, formula 1s and super motards, and organisers say it’s going to be a great day out for the whole family – whether they’re bike enthusiasts, or just up for a taste of adrenalin.

With one day down this long weekend, and two to go, police are urging motorists to exercise caution and not drink and drive on the busy roads.

On Friday afternoon, traffic volumes grew steadily as the day went on, as people headed off for a long weekend break at the end of summer and day one of Easter Weekend passed largely incident free.

But yesterday morning, that

changed when emergency services were called to a fatal crash on State Highway 72 near Methven.

Police are continuing to urge people to wear their seatbelts, watch their speeds and following distances and have patience, and not to drive if they’d been drinking, to ensure the weekend continues on the right path.

Ashburton Police sergeant Scott Banfield said Mid Canterbury residents were improving when it came to their attitudes

towards drink driving. Up to October last year, 11 fewer drink drivers had been caught on the district’s roads compared to the same time the year before.

“But it’s not the police catching you as a drunk driver you should worry about – it’s the serious injury or death of a friend/family member and how your community will perceive you if you take that unnecessary risk of driving while drunk,” Mr Banfield said.

Brutal assault Police are investigating the brutal assault of a man “kicked in the face several times” in Dunedin.

It was unclear what the victim was doing on Arthur Street, but a taxi driver reported the incident via a 111 call about 10.55pm on Wednesday. Senior sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the man was bleeding from his head when discovered. “He [was] conscious, but not in a good way [when police arrived].” The man then got aggressive towards people trying to help him and after he calmed down, police followed an ambulance to hospital, Mr Benn said. Anyone with any information about the assault should contact Dunedin police.

Fatal van crash

Police urge caution on holiday trips

A Southland driver had a lucky escape when the caravan they were towing went up in flames yesterday. The driver noticed it was on fire about midday on State Highway 6, about 2km south of the township of Athol. Senior sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said the driver noticed it was on fire, pulled over and detached it from the vehicle. “It was a small fire but [then] the whole caravan has gone up,” he said.

One person is dead after a van carrying seven people crashed on State Highway 6 near Luggate in the South Island. The van, believed to be a Toyota Hiace, ended up down a bank about 12.45pm yesterday after leaving the highway at Queensberry, about 10km south of Luggate. Police said there were seven occupants in the van when it crashed, and one person died at the scene.

Emergency services freed two trapped occupants. The remaining occupants were able to remove themselves from the vehicle and were treated by ambulance staff.

St John said three ambulances, a rapid response and two rescue helicopters responded.

Unplanned fire drill for students

Farmers spin health message

They’ve exchanged their gumboots and black singlets for lycra, cleats and pedals and are cycling the length of New Zealand to highlight to fellow farmers the benefits of being active.

Founded by former sheep and beef farmer turned consultant, Ian Handcock, the Fit 4 Farming Cycle Tour got under way this week in the North Island at Ngatea and will arrive in Ashburton on Easter Monday for a free community event day full of fun activities.

Run in conjunction with the Farmstrong rural wellbeing programme, Mr Handcock said he wants the cycle tour to help make New Zealand the fittest farming nation in the world.

“If we can do that it will mean that we will be more productive on the farm and handle stress better.”

So far the peloton has held up well as they have made their way down the North Island and have been joined by many farmers along the way with only a few minor bike issues to contend with.

Tinwald School was evacuated Wednesday morning after an unexpected, and unexplained, fire alarm sounded.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the school shortly after 11.30am and walked through the school with principal Peter Livingstone, but no reason for the alarm was found.

Mr Livingstone said all of the school’s children and staff followed the school’s evacuation procedure to the letter.

“Bless their little cotton socks, the kids just came straight out and were standing in lines in the rain, exactly how they were told to,” Mr Livingstone said.

With no sign of fire, the children were then moved out of the rain and into the hall while the rest of the school was checked out.

While unplanned, Mr Livingstone said the evacuation was textbook, and the drama was topped off by a visit from a fire engine – lights, sirens and all.

“Which made a lot of children smile, which was great,” he said.

Mr Handcock said the tour had re-inforced the importance of bringing a group together to socialise and talk during hard times.

“It’s been fantastic. People come and have a really good time.”

The 1400km cycle tour from Waikato to Invercargill came about after Mr Handcock studied the health and wellbeing of farmers and found 75 per cent of dairy farmers were at risk of cardiovascular disease because

tasks that were previously labour intensive such as milking, drenching and haymaking had become highly automated.

He and his core peloton of 20 riders will arrive from Methven at the EA Networks Centre at around 11.30am when kids’ activities will commence including riding a cycle track.

Those that come to the day can get involved in a cycling, walking or running activity as well as taking part in a time trial ride and a mountain bike fun ride.

The community event will also be held in conjunction with the Tony Archibald Memorial 16km time trial cycle race and will have

a strong emphasis on rural communities’ physical health.

The six event days including Ashburton’s, have been organised by local communities to provide a purpose and opportunity for people to get off farm with their families and staff for a day and socialise while undertaking a bit of light activity.

There is no cost to farmers and each day concludes with a BBQ. With an obstacle bike course, the chance to win a trail bike and bouncy castle for the kids, there will be plenty of activities for young and old including a Hilux haul where teams can race each in pulling two Hilux utes.

Flu vaccine available soon

Mid Cantabrians will soon be able to take an important step to protect themselves against the flu this winter, with the impending arrival of the influenza vaccine.

Set to launch in early April, the Ministry of Health confirmed there were no delays forecast in the vaccine’s arrival, as there were last year.

In his weekly update, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) chief executive David

Meates encouraged people to get in early and get immunised.

Influenza was a serious disease, not a cold, and came on quickly, resulting in fever, body aches, extreme tiredness and a cough. It could also lead to serious health problems such as pneumonia and bacterial infections, he said.

In a special message to staff, Mr Meates said it was up to them to lead the way in protecting the community by getting the vaccine.

Unlike the Waikato DHB, the

CDHB won’t be asking non-vaccinated staff to wear masks. Mr Meates said it was imperative to get vaccinated in order to keep the flu at bay.

In the third quarter of last year Canterbury had one of the highest rates for influenza-like consultations in the South Island with GPs seeing between 150 and 399 cases per 100,000 population per week.

By September there were more than 140 reported cases of the A-strain and 763 of the B-strain within the area.

In Ashburton, GPs around the district implemented a triaging system, in order to cope with an influx of patients last year.

Instead of putting a patient immediately in front of a doctor, nurses spoke to patients first via phone and then decided whether they required an appointment or symptomatic advice.

This year the vaccine will contain three virus strains, and pregnant women, people aged 65 years and over and people with chronic health conditions will be eligible for a free flu vaccine.

In brief Aid for principal A Dunedin school principal critically injured in a cycling crash has had a Givealittle page set up to support his family. Brockville School principal Craig Hickford, 43, was struck by an Isuzu 4WD utility while cycling in Main Road, Fairfield, on Valentine’s Day. Emergency services attended to him at the scene before he was transferred to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition.

Mr Hickford was out of intensive care and “making progress”, family friend and and creator of the page Angela Ruske said.

“Craig sustained significant head injuries that left him fighting for his life,” Mrs Ruske said on the page.

Trump sign stolen A controversial church billboard featuring Donald Trump was stolen in broad daylight while the minister conducted a funeral service. St Luke’s Church, in Remuera, Auckland, expressed their disappointment after thieves made off with their billboard on Thursday. The billboard, which the church put up for Lent a couple of weeks ago, controversially depicted US presidential candidate Donald Trump standing in front of the crucified Jesus, holding a hammer and saying, “I don’t like losers”. The thieves took the entire board, including the corflute sign and its wooden backing leaving only two poles in the ground.

Shockingly, they made off with it in broad daylight while the minister, Rev Glynn Cardy, was inside the church conducting a funeral service.

Jerry’s legacy

German students enjoy Ashcoll hospitality Ashburton College said goodbye to a group of 17 German students, aged 15 to 16, from their sister school Kempten High School yesterday.

German teacher and exchange co-ordinator Ken Pow said the group had been in Ashburton for six days staying with host families

from the school community.

They attended classes for three days and went on a variety of outings, including jet boating on the Rakaia River and paintballing.

The group loved paintballing because in Germany the age restriction is 18, Mr Pow said.

Students from Ashburton College will be heading to Germany as part of the exchange in September.

The three-yearly exchange programme has been operating between the two schools for more than 20 years.

Methven offline again as cable repaired

Internet and phone services in Methven went down again on Thursday, following a serious outage earlier in the week.

Chorus spokesperson Nathan Beaumont said services were out for about seven hours on Thursday, and the fault was related to repair work that had been carried out in relation to an earlier outage on Tuesday, which was caused by a severed fibre cable.

“We repaired the fibre on Tuesday but sometimes when we have to do a fairly major repair

like the one earlier this week, there are the occasional teething problems in the following days as the network comes back on line and further faults are found, but the network is humming along nicely now,” Mr Beaumont said.

The initial outage on Tuesday was due to contractors installing power infrastructure for EA Networks cutting through cables on Mt Hutt Station Road, near the Waimarama Road turnoff.

Greg Donaldson Contracting staff were carrying out the work, and Mr Donaldson said they were working off a plan of where

internet cables were supposed to be, but the plan was obviously not correct.

After Tuesday’s outage, Chorus said it would seek to recover the costs of the repairs.

Meanwhile, any individuals or businesses wanting to seek compensation for the lost services would need to talk to their internet or phone service providers in the first instance.

A Methven lodge owner contacted the Guardian on Thursday morning, frustrated with the ongoing problems, but said he knew others had been hit worse

by the outage than him.

“Obviously accidents happen, but two days out over a three day period is pretty frustrating,” he said. “We run a lodge, we don’t run a supermarket or a big business, but it’s still pretty frustrating for us.”

At Methven Four Square on Thursday their Lotto counter was down for a time, as was their money machine, but by the afternoon it was back to business.

Further down the road, the town’s BNZ Bank branch was only able to do limited transactions and had to close briefly.

The Porirua Park Stadium has been renamed after former All Black Jerry Collins in an emotional ceremony yesterday. The 34-yearold died in a car crash in France in June last year. His partner Alana Madill died and his 3-month-old daughter Ayla Collins was injured but survived. The venue will now be known as the Jerry Collins Stadium and a plaque has been unveiled in his honour. Collins was raised in Porirua and played for the Northern United Rugby Club.

Mortgages crippling People buying the cheapest homes Auckland has to offer are still paying at least $100 more in weekly mortgage repayments than what they were paying two years ago. And they’re having to spend half their income on the crippling repayments. Interest. co.nz’s Home Loan Affordability Report has revealed Auckland is the only region where the property market is “seriously unaffordable” for first-home buyers. The report found that from February 2014 to the same month this year, the selling price of lower-end homes in Auckland climbed $150,000. The “lower quartile” selling price was now $629,500, up from $478,000, meaning mortgage payments rose too.

Prized cat euthanised by mistake

Buddy the Bengal was mistakenly enthanised.

In the elite world of champion cats, Jungledots Warrior Chief, AKA Buddy, was one of the country’s top five.

But the brown marble Bengal was mistakenly euthanised by the Canterbury branch of the SPCA and Rakaia cat breeder Helen Lewis is furious.

About 12 months ago, she shifted house and, short of space, opted to board Buddy along with a breeding queen and a kitten with a friend and fellow cat breeder in Christchurch.

In November she learned Canterbury SPCA officers had seized her cats along with others from the property.

Ms Lewis immediately contacted the SPCA and asked for Buddy and her other cats to be returned.

“I had to prove they were mine – they guaranteed they would not be euthanised,” she said.

“I went home to get the documentation – purchase contracts, photos and microchip numbers – to prove ownership of the cats.”

Meanwhile, Ms Lewis was informed the cats were infected with ringworm, when tested under a Woods lamp at a Hornby veterinary clinic.

But the disturbing story was about to get even worse.

Once the paperwork was completed Ms Lewis collected the cats and took them home.

There she discovered that Buddy had

been substituted for another Bengal cat.

Four days later, and following numerous attempts to contact the Canterbury SPCA, she received a call.

“They said they had made a terrible mistake and Buddy was dead,” she said.

“They had murdered him on the pretext he had ringworm – the whole thing was absolutely gutting.”

None of the other rescued cats returned positive results for ringworm and Ms Lewis was scathing about relying on the Woods lamp test, saying sawdust litter would also show positive.

“Other SPCA branches isolate, treat and rehome infected animals but not Canterbury,” she said.

The SPCA offered to refund her Buddy’s purchase price of $3500, however Ms Lewis said he was worth at least $20,000 in terms of his breeding potential.

Canterbury SPCA marketing and communications manager Raina Roberts was unable to comment on the matter, other than to say an investigation was underway.

She agreed “some errors” had been made but said they were addressed at the time, and new systems have been implemented as a consequence.

Animals were only euthanised as a “last resort” and on veterinary advice, she said.

“We are confident we have learned from this – we are continually working to improve our systems.”

Bids for busted Lambo Bids for a smashed-up Lamborghini listed on Trade Me with a $1 reserve price have now surpassed $90,000 – with five days still to go.

The written-off Lamborghini Huracan was reportedly involved in a single-car accident off-road, and is being sold by Star Auctions on behalf of an insurance company.

Although the 5.2 litre, V10 luxury sports car has a damaged chassis, and photos show most parts of the car have been damaged by the crash, bids on the listing reached $90,100 just before 9am yesterday.

And 135,709 people had viewed the auction.

A new Huracan starts at about $400,000.

The seller has been answering questions

from jokers since posting the auction.

On Trade Me user asked: “Do u think this will buff out?”

The seller answered: “Hi there, it will probably take more than a little buffing to fix the scratches ... Cheers.”

A video on the auction site shows the engine starts and runs. There is fewer than 1000km on the odometer; a working version of the car hits 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of more than 325km/hr.

Auckland mechanic Mikhil Singh estimated it would take $100,000 and six months of work to repair the car.

But he said repairs to the chassis were complicated.

Facebook reward helps track brazen thieves A frustrated Auckland businessman has offered a meaty reward for information about brazen battery bandits who raided his yard.

For anyone who catches and delivers the thieves back to crime scene, the money doubles.

Shannon Chambers has shared CCTV footage of the thieves’ car far and wide in an effort to track them.

On Monday morning, between 2.40 and 2.48, three men stole 30 batteries from machines at the Total Access Yard on Maurice Road, Penrose.

“They kindly cut them out leaving us a massive mess to fix,” Mr Chambers wrote in a Facebook post shared thousands of times.

“They stopped on Station Road outside the gas station in what looks like a dark-coloured Holden Commodore VP or VR with a

body kit and while one of them lifted the bonnet and pretended it was broken down the other two cut through our fence.”

Mr Chambers’ wife Vicki Chambers owns the construction equipment supply firm and Mr Chambers is a project manager there.

Much of his time this week, however, has been spent on the thieves’ trail.

Mr Chambers is offering $5000 to anyone who gives him the thieves’ names and addresses and $10,000 to anyone who delivers them and the stolen batteries to the yard, but so far hasn’t needed to part with his cash.

Mr Chambers told NZME people had given enough information to possibly identify the trio. That’s been passed to police and Mr Chambers is waiting for them to act.

Wheat and Wheels gaining international

The Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club’s second Wheat and Wheels Rally has attracted international attention.

I

t’s been three years in the planning, but all the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club’s hard work has paid off with this year’s Wheat and Wheel’s Rally promising to be an entertaining weekend.

Whether your passion is to revisit the district’s farming past or to see the very latest in agricultural innovations, chances are you will find something to interest you at Peter Butterick’s Wakanui farm next weekend.

Last staged in 2013, the rally attracted thousands and if the weather holds out even more people are expected to visit the site this time around. Visitors from as far afield as the UK and Finland have signalled their intent to attend the rally.

As well as an impressive line-up of vintage and veteran agricultural machinery, some of the most high-tech modern-day versions will also be displayed to highlight just how far technology has progressed – including a New Holland header thought to be the world’s largest-capacity combine harvester and the biggest set of discs in the country.

By comparison, a Sunshine header purchased by Mr Butterick’s grandfather for the 1931 harvest will be on show. It sat in the shed for 50 years before it was resurrected for the inaugural Wheat and Wheel’s Rally in 2013, Mr Butterick said.

Bruce Taylor was charged with irrigating the spring-planted crop, along with a barley crop which was harvested a couple of weeks ago to provide a carpark for the rally and seating for the spectators.

Organisers John Hall and Mr Taylor had their 1960s International 151 and Massey Ferguson 788 combine harvesters out for a run, and despite having sat in the shed for several years, Mr Hall said both machines did the job without problems.

The rally will provide a rare chance to see some now obsolete machinery, which had been painstakingly restored by collecting parts from around the coun-

try, works with all-day harvesting activity and threshing machines and chaff-cutters in operation.

Mr Hall was still fielding calls from people interested in exhibiting this week.

As of Wednesday there were close to 800 entries, including more than 100 crawler tractors, 160 trucks and 22 traction engines.

Classic and military vehicles will so feature, along with a collection of fire engines.

Local community and school groups will provide refreshments.

The Wheat and Wheels Rally will be held on Christies Road on April 2-3, with the programme starting at 10am each day.

intage farm machinery enthusiasts from across the country are on their way to this year’s Wheat and Wheels Rally.

The Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club has organised the rally, which will be held on Peter Butterick’s farm in Wakanui on April 2-3.

While the event has attracted international interest, Leicester Roberts won’t have far to travel with his two Cletrac crawler tractors, carefully maintained on his Seafield Road lifestyle block.

One of the tractors was purchased by his father, Cliff Roberts, in 1936.

“He bought it sight unseen after seeing one at a demo inland from Balclutha,” Mr Roberts said.

After his father died, the tractor was sold to one of his close friends, but Mr Roberts bought it back four years later.

The distinctive orange Cletrac tractors were the brainchild of Rollin White with the prototypes rolled out a century ago this year.

The machine’s controlled differential sets them apart from similar tractors, Mr Roberts said.

“You steer it with levers and the brakes,” he said.

“It’s designed to make it easier for agricultural work.”

For many years the Roberts’ Cletrac was used in the family’s contracting business based in the

Leicester Roberts’ Cletrac crawlers are cleaned and ready for this year’s Wheat and Wheels Rally.

Mr Roberts said while it was “in its working clothes”, meaning its work-worn condition, he had repainted it as a 15-year-old to restore its orange paintwork to distinguish it from the opposition Caterpillar brand’s trademark

yellow. The only other one of its type that Mr Roberts is aware of is housed in a museum in Wakefield.

Rally organiser John Hall said Mr Roberts’ tractors will fit in well with this year’s rally theme of Trucks and Tracks.

Mr Hall said a fleet of tractor enthusiasts were already en route

on a three-week road trip from Te Awamutu in the North Island and another from Thornby in Southland.

Stores ignore trade restraint More shops than not opened in Wanaka yesterday morning, despite the restrictions around trading on Good Friday.

Businesses which opened yesterday or plan to open on Easter Sunday will once again risk the possibility of a fine of up to $1000 if they are selling more than a restricted list of goods.

A survey of the town’s CBD yesterday morning found shops selling clothing, jewellery, camera equipment, sporting goods, bicycles and other restricted products.

The Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill that might lead to a change in the rules around Easter trading is still being considered by a parliamentary select committee.

The Bill, being promoted by Workplace Relations and Safety Minister and Dunedin MP, Michael Woodhouse, is aimed at freeing up trading regulations on Easter Sunday – but not Good Friday. Many Wanaka retailers have traditionally opened on Good Friday and Easter Sunday to service tourists.

in the town this weekend for the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow.

Until the law is changed, existing rules apply and that means dairies and service stations, for instance, can sell such things as food, drink, baby formula, pet food, petrol, oil, car parts and accessories.

Pharmacies can open on both days but garden centres can open on Sunday only.

Queenstown and Taupo are exempt from the law on both days but not Wanaka and other tourist towns. Wanaka has a history of retailers deliberately contravening the law, with little or no consequence in recent years. And that seems likely to continue.

Steve Worley, who has opened his Kodak, Photo and Digital business every Easter since he took it over nine years ago, said he would trade as he normally did.

His business was convicted and fined once and was discharged on a second occasion.

It is understood the law has not been enforced in Wanaka during the past five years.

Woman driver hits pedestrians A woman who hit three pedestrians with her car before crashing it in Redcliffe has been arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police and emergency services attended the crash on Main Road in the Christchurch suburb yes-

terday. Police said it appeared the 45-year-old female driver failed to take a corner correctly, hitting three pedestrians walking on the footpath.

“One pedestrian has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the other two pe-

destrians who received minor injuries were treated at the scene,” police said.

Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash and the driver has been arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

From Ashburton to Former Ashburtonian Jason Hodzelmans is making a name for himself in the arts world. Fresh from finishing up at the Popup Globe, he caught up with the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter to chat about the show and other exciting things on his schedule.

A

man of many talents, Jason Hodzelmans has dabbled in producing, casting and acting.

His latest venture involved a pop-up theatre, a few mates and a very successful Shakespearian show.

It was back in July when Jason heard whispers of a make-shift Shakespearian Globe in Auckland and so spawned another rendition of Titus.

The rest, as Jason puts it, is history.

When he first heard word of the Pop-up Globe, a full-scale temporary working replica of the second Globe Theatre, Jason was flat-out producing another work – Not Psycho at the Q Theatre.

However, his curiosity got the better of him and he started investigating the rumoured theatre.

“As we all often do I jumped on to Google and searched the Popup Globe in Auckland and found a website with Miles Gregory introducing the concept of this pop-up space,” Jason said.

With an already successful Shakespeare show in the bank and props and costumes at the ready, Jason decided to take action and email the organisers.

Within a few weeks he got the phonecall he had been waiting for, offering the show a place in the next performance season.

A producer with Aucklandbased company Fractious Tash, Jason is well versed in the arts.

He joined the company after director Benjamin Henson became involved in the Unitec production of Titus, which Jason was also working on.

It went “extraordinarily well” and the pair become friends. So much so they decided Titus was

too good a show not to do again.

More than ready to take it to the Pop-up Globe, Titus was one of eight shows that frequented the globe across its season in Auckland. As well the theatre has two of its own shows that span over a few months.

Opening night was described as nothing less than incredible by Jason, with more than 500 people filling the space.

“Us seven unlikely lads took over the venue and showed everyone a really good time,” Jason said.

“The space was unlike anything I had performed in [before] as essentially, audience members are everywhere.”

Jason played Aaron, the lusty moor and curator of all havoc, and as a result spends much of his time gallivanting around the stage

interacting with as many audience members as possible, while manipulating other characters into undertaking heinous deeds.

“I had the biggest grin on my face the whole show as it was such a joy to be performing to so many people in a truly magical space.”

Reviews reflected Jason’s passion with critics heralding Titus as a unique must-see and dubbing Jason the star of the show.

Titus was unleashed on the globe from March 13 until March 20, but even though it is now done and dusted doesn’t mean Jason has stopped for a breather.

He is staying busy, working fulltime casting people for television and film at a casting firm in Auckland.

Right now he is the casting assistant for the New Zealand

casting of an American television series, Ash vs Evil Dead.

But above all else, Jason manages to find time to boost his own career with acting jobs, from voiceovers for television and radio to performing in commercials, television series and films.

At the end of last year he had a guest role in series two of Westside and prior to that he starred in the Anzac television film Field Punishment No 1 and Consent: The Louise Nicholas story.

While Jason said he had no idea where his career would take him, he does hope time will allow him to spend more time testing out the waters of theatre and film acting.

“It feels like I am juggling three hats currently with casting, acting and producing, which is sometimes a little overwhelming,”

he said. “After dedicating some time to casting I would like to then take a bit more time to see if performing for stage and touring is something I am interested in or if it is just a fantasy that actually does not suit me at all.”

Ideally Jason said he would love to take a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as similar events in Melbourne, which he aims to make happen in the very near future.

“I really have no idea what will happen next, I could be cast in a movie or television series dictating my life for a year, then again there’s a high chance that won’t happen too,” he said.

“I am really just enjoying where I am at the moment, a holiday along with some more family time down south is the extent of my plans currently.”

For the first time the Dubliner Methven Mountain Thunder

street race will host sidecars.

The sidecars will not be racing, but demonstrations will be held with the hope of forming a rac-

ing category in the future.

“The sidecars are coming down from the North Island to check out the circuit,” said Methven Li-

ons Club events co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel. “If they like what they see they’ll get more buddies to come back next year and

make it in to a race class.”

Practice laps commence at 9.30am and racing will continue until 4pm today.

Ashburton College swimmers were in exceptional form at the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Swimming Championships in Timaru on Wednesday.

The college team of 37 swimmers won 33 individual top three placings including eight titles, while the relay teams were also dominant - claiming 11 top three places and four titles.

But the college contingent’s biggest coup was taking out both the Aoraki girls’ and boys’ trophies for accumulating the most points.

It is the seventh consecutive year that college have won the

girls’ trophy, while the boys broke Timaru Boys’ High School’s winning streak.

The standout swimmer of the day was Lucy Clough, who claimed two titles and two second place finishes to win the senior girls’ championship.

Clough also broke the Aoraki record in the 200m individual medley.

In her final year at the Aoraki champs, Clough leaves her legacy as the holder of four individual Aoraki records as well as being a member of the Ashburton College junior and senior teams that hold the current Aoraki records in all relays.

Also for the senior girls, Sol

Gonzalez won a further two titles and was placed third overall in the senior girls’ champs.

Clough and Gonzalez teamed up with Sarah Whyte and Bailey Tait to win both the 200m freestyle and medley relays, breaking the Aoraki records in both.

For the boys, Matthew Clough was caught up in a tough battle in his first year in the senior section.

He won two titles and gained two second placings to finish as runner-up overall, while Jared Scammell also swam well with four top three placings to finish third in the junior boys’ section.

Meanwhile, the junior boys’ relay team was unbeatable with

Scammell, Jay Martin, Kalen Tait and Josh Giles winning both the 200m freestyle and medley relays.

The senior boys’ team also had an impressive day, battling well for second placings in both relays to round off a superb meet for College.

Mount Hutt College also enjoyed plenty of success.

The under-14 girls’ relay team won both the medley and the freestyle relay, while Aimee Elliott set a new Aoraki record for the 50m backstroke in the girls’ 15 and over section.

In all, Mount Hutt notched up five first placings for individual events.

Johnson hits back at McFadden critics Misfiring Warriors star Shaun Johnson has fired back at critics of Andrew McFadden, arguing that sacking the under-pressure coach won’t solve their NRL woes.

A frustrated Johnson also admitted he’s struggling with the ankle injury that prematurely ended last season and set the Warriors on their 11-game losing streak.

“I’ve made a full recovery in one sense, but have a bit to go in another,” he said.

“I’m 100 per cent with the strength and it’s fully healed. It

was tough at the time but looking back, that was the easy part of the recovery - the rehab side of things.

“Certainly mentally I’m not quite there yet.”

But it’s his vehement defence of McFadden that will be of most interest to those who are calling for the head of McFadden in a bid to arrest their worrying start to the season.

Having lost the final eight games of 2015, his star-studded roster have now flunked in their opening three games of the new

year and sit second-last on the ladder, one spot above the Sydney Roosters.

Johnson subtly directed his angst at his own club, saying the constant firing of coaches in his career hasn’t helped him or the team flourish on the field.

“Plenty has been made of the high turnover when it comes to the men in charge at the Warriors – and 10 coaches in 21 years doesn’t read well,” he said.

“Frankly it’s been ridiculous how many coaches we’ve gone through.

“It certainly doesn’t help as a playmaker when you’re adapting to a new style of play, and that’s something I’ve had now with four coaches in five years of first grade.”

Johnson said the players needed to take responsibility for the club’s continued underachievement.

“We know we haven’t helped them out too much, and that’s been reflected in our performances ... Talk of Cappy (McFadden) being moved on isn’t the answer,” he said.

Coldstream’s fifth and fourth grade teams ended their seasons on a high with both teams winning their respective finals in style.

The fifth grade team took a 39-

run win over Methven as each wicket lost took six runs off the team’s eventual total.

After posting 94 for 9 from their allotted 24 overs, Methven could only must 49 for 8.

Harry Dargue was the best of the Coldstream batsmen, post-

ing 19 to top score, while Jack Middleton recorded 14 not out.

In the fourth grade final against an undefeated Allenton outfit, Coldstream notched 101 for 8 from their scheduled 40 overs.

Jack Soal (32) top scored while

Jack Gibson and Aiden Bennett had a fine day with the ball, taking three for 12 and two for 14 respectively.

In reply Allenton were all out for 93, but Angus Jemmett did all he could to keep his side in contention with an elegant 48 runs.

Guptill a world class player, says Taylor Memo to India’s T20 powerbrokers: think again when it comes to Martin Guptill.

That was the message from veteran batsman Ross Taylor, after New Zealand had raced to its third consecutive win in the World T20 in India.

Man of the match Guptill drove New Zealand to victory at Mohali with 80 from 48 deliveries.

The Aucklander is enjoying a great run of form in the short form cricket, is the third highest run scorer in T20 internationals, has an excellent average and strong strike rate, and is one of the game’s most prolific six hitters.

Taylor told RadioSport’s The

Crowd Goes Wild: “There’s always talk he can’t play spin ... this was a nice reminder to those IPL owners what they are missing out on. He showed what a world class player he is.”

Guptill was overlooked twice in the IPL auction last month, the only listed marquee player to miss out.

Almost all the teams were well stocked in terms of established opening pairs, with only Delhi Daredevils having a vacancy there.

But there has also been a growing caution amongst IPL teams about spending money on foreign players especially if they were not guaranteed regular game time.

And the questions around Guptill’s ability against spin won’t go away.

ESPN’s CricInfo match review team of former international batsmen, Indian Sanjay Manjrekar and Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene, immediately weighed in predicting Guptill would get a quick IPL call-up.

“The impressive thing is he has done it over and over again ... he gets a good start in the first six overs and kicks on. It gives them a great platform,” Jayawardene said of the Kiwi opener.

Jayawardene added: “Even if a (IPL) fast bowler is injured they might replace him (with Guptill).”

Manjrekar said Guptill’s straight bat meant he didn’t miss many deliveries, and could score all around the ground.

“This guy is a proper player, not a T20 basher. There is an injury waiting to happen in the IPL and Guptill is the quick replacement,” said Manjrekar.

Taylor meanwhile warned that New Zealand’s final group opponents Bangladesh should not be taken lightly.

“We’ve had our troubles against Bangladesh on these turning wickets before and and Kolkata is a wicket that can turn quite a bit ... we’re hoping to take some momentum into the semifinal,” he said.

What price New Zealand winning two world cricket titles on the same day next week?

It’s never wise to get too far ahead of events, but given what’s transpired so far at the concurrent world T20 championships in India it’s a reasonable point to consider.

First the women.

They crunched Australia in their key pool game in Nagpur, emulating the men from a few days earlier in putting a squeeze on with slower bowlers before getting the runs required at a decent clip.

They are playing impressive cricket, fielding assertively - Sophie Devine’s splendid diving catch at long on against Australia a case in point - and with captain Suzie Bates the runaway leading batsman in the championship, 142 runs at 47 with a 116.39 strike rate, and tidy spin bowling look as good as any team at this point.

The men are three from three and have now won in distinctly different conditions.

Underpinning the work of the batsmen and bowlers, New Zealand are fielding impressively.

Corey Anderson’s above the head grab on the long-off fence to dismiss Shahid Afridi effectively shut the door on Pakistan, who came up 22 runs short, but had threatened to topple New Zealand through the first half of their chase for an imposing 180.

That win was notable for the fact New Zealand’s bowlers once more had to earn their money.

The first two games were played on (cue understatement) spin-friendly pitches in Nagpur and Dharamsala. On Wednesday Mohali produced a good batting strip and little turn.

Left arm spinner Mitchell Santner went for 15 in the first over; Anderson for nine in the second, Santner another nine in his second and Mitch McClenaghan’s first went for 18.

But the way the bowlers stuck to the task impressed.

Santner got through his rough start to finish with two for 29; legspinner Ish Sodhi was again outstanding, with one for 25 from his four while speedster Adam Milne, the ideal counterpoint to the slow men, took two for 26, conceding just five, then seven runs from overs 18 and 20.

“We didn’t bowl particularly well up front and were able to pull it back through tight bowling and good fielding,” opener Martin Guptill said.

“We’ve got another game in a couple of days (against Bangladesh in Kolkata on Saturday night) and can work on things we didn’t do so well and put them right.”

Much has gone well for New Zealand, who have mastered difficult conditions.

Whisper it, but they have positioned themselves well to make a big run for an inaugural world T20 crown.

Celts take local derby

The opening round of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition kicked off on Thursday due to the Easter weekend.

Hampstead, Rakaia and Methven began their campaigns away from home, taking on Lincoln, West Melton and Darfield respectively on Thursday evening before Celtic hosted Southern in an all-Mid Canterbury Good Friday showdown yesterday.

Celtic v Southern 32-15 Celtic was quick out of the traps with two tries inside the opening five minutes against a lethargic Southern yesterday.

Skipper Danny Hurley was the first to cross the line before centre Christian Vainerere crashed over as the home side went 14-0 up early on with fullback Hush Tohovaka collecting the extras.

First five Nathan McCloy then crossed over for Celtic’s third try of the afternoon but Tohovaka failed to convert for a 19-0 advantage, but added a penalty to Celtic’s haul three minutes later.

Southern will rue two early penalty misses from the boot of first five Richard Fridd, but Micheal Ellis’ side did manage to assert themselves in the second quarter.

A well-taken grubber kick from

halfback Will Mackenzie was gathered by Argentinian wing Franco Campuaffi, who touched down in the corner.

Fridd was on target from his conversion and struck a penalty on the stroke of half time to bring the scoreline to 22-10 at the interval.

In contrast to their poor start in the first half, Southern enjoyed plenty of possession early in the second period but lacked execution.

Against the run of play, it was Celtic who registered the first points of the second stanza as replacement Hamish Finnie fought his way over the line to extend his side’s lead to 17 points.

David Morrison took on kicking duties but failed to slot his conversion from a challenging angle.

Southern was quick to reply with an unconverted try of their own from Mid Canterbury loose forward Scott Vessey, but, with time ebbing away, Celtic put the tie beyond all doubt as Joe Peters sold a dummy to the defence and crossed in the corner.

Lincoln v Hampstead 26-10 Hampstead got off to a losing start against a well-organised Lincoln outfit on Thursday evening.

Lincoln showed their intent

with a try early on but Hampstead fired back with a try from Sonny Hefa, which was duly converted by Mariota Samoa for a 19-7 score at half time.

In the second half, Hampstead had plenty of possession but couldn’t capitalise in what coach Regan Broker described as “white line fever.”

Samoa added another penalty but Lincoln was convincing in a deserved win.

Broker said he is hoping for improved discipline when his side take on Glenmark next Saturday, but insisted there were positives to be taken from the tie, including Josh Nonu’s fine performance at first five after starting at fullback.

Rakaia v Darfield 10-3 Rakaia kicked off their campaign with a 10-3 win over Darfield on Thursday.

The Watters Cup holders were forced to grind out a hard-fought victory in dismal weather.

The teams went in to the sheds after a scoreless 0-0 first half as both sides struggled to gain moment due to the greasy conditions.

The second half proved much the same, with the ball failing to go through phases, but a try from Seta Koroitamana and a conversion and penalty from Andrew

Sherman was enough for new coach Sean Carter’s first win at the helm.

West Melton v Methven 20-13 Defending Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition champions Methven fell to a 20-13 loss in their first outing against West Melton on Thursday night.

The new-look Methven side has retained just four players from last season, with prop Simon Fleetwood, first five Davie Maw, lock Sam Grant and number 8 Jeremy Lewthwaite returning to the fray.

Methven trailed 13-3 at the interval with Maw registering his side’s only points of the opening 40 minutes from a penalty.

Michael Gilbert touched down for Methven’s first try of the season and Maw converted before slotting another penalty, but it wasn’t enough as West Melton took the spoils.

Manager Wayne Timpson believes the new additions will take time to gel, but is confident Methven will bounce back to form.

The Melbourne Rebels feel that the Super Rugby defending champion Highlanders are playing better than when they won the title. While the Rebels are off to their best ever season start, coach Tony McGahan acknowledges that facing the Highlanders at AAMI Park tonight is a big step up. “The Highlanders have played great rugby this year,” McGahan said. “We really feel that they’ve probably gone up another level with their combinations and their confidence in what they do and they gather that from winning a championship.”

In at the deep end A young and unfancied Cheetahs are hoping to spring a surprise on title contenders the Brumbies in tomorrow morning’s Super Rugby clash in Bloemfontein. The South African franchise have made several changes to the side beaten by the Lions last weekend, their third loss in four games this season.

Coach Franco Smith felt there was no better chance to blood some youngsters than against the Australian conference leaders.

“The only way to take the step up is to play against the best in this competition,” Smith said.

Hogg best in Six Nations Scotland’s Stuart Hogg has been voted the Six Nations player of the championship. The award was decided by a combination of an online poll, of which Hogg secured over 30 per cent, and a panel of former rugby players. Hogg said: “I’m honoured to receive the player of the championship trophy and join the list of the esteemed players that have won in the past.

I’m extremely grateful for all the supporters who voted for me.”

England’s Billy Vunipola came a close second with third place awarded to the tournament’s toptry scorer George North.

Cane citing dismissed Chiefs captain Sam Cane is free to face the Western Force this weekend after being cleared of a dangerous tackle by the SANZAAR judiciary. Cane was cited for a hit on a Jaguares prop Buenos Aires. But a judicial hearing has found the flanker not guilty, with SANZAAR saying it was an unfortunate combination of Cane joining to create a maul in a permissible manner at the same time as his opponent fell rapidly to the ground.

Rakaia is in good health for the 2016 season with new recruits bolstering the ranks of an already strong side.

The defending Watters Cup champions will be coached by Sean Carter this season following Merv Todd’s decision to assist former hooker Kyle Gray with the Colts team.

Carter, who will be assisted by John Moorren and Wayne Foxcroft, has a wealth of experience to aid Rakaia’s quest for glory in the Combined Country Competition and Watters Cup. “Merv (Todd) was an excep-

tional coach, a great coach, but Sean adds to that,” said Moorren.

“He’s got the technical nous, he’s coached internationally, so he has a lot in his tool box.”

Rakaia have also been boosted by the arrival of Timaui Nabakeke, Maleli Sau and Luke Leasoki.

The trio will add depth in the backs and forwards in what is set to be another arduous campaign.

Nabakeke can operate at first five and fullback while Sau, who has played for the Canterbury Sevens team, is comfortable at fullback and centre and Leasoki is an option at prop and lock.

“Last year we went through a number of injuries, especially in our backline at the start of the season,” said Moorren.

“So it gives us depth in positions that previously we struggled to have depth.”

Rakaia have also acquired Tom Blythe, who previously played for Southern.

The Welshman can play at lock and number 8 and Moorren has been impressed by the new arrival.

“He’s rugged, he’s quite dynamic with the ball and he’s good going backwards on defence as well,” he said.

“He’s a good all-round player

and he’s got good height, so it gives us more options in the lineouts.”

Moorren is hoping Rakaia can build upon last season’s success, but is well aware of the challenges ahead in a highly competitive competition.

“Realistically it’s a very tough competition, it’s exceptionally strong and exceptionally hard to win,” he said.

“Our ambition is to play an attractive brand of rugby and respect the other teams.

“If you don’t go in with that attitude, then you’ll get knocked off by these guys, they’re that good.”

Chertsey rescheduling upsets racing fans By sue newMan

For more than 75 years Easter Monday, Chertsey and horses have been a mix that’s provided guaranteed entertainment at the end of a long weekend.

The unbroken link, that started with the Chertsey Gymkhana and later became a trophy trials day at Ashburton Raceway, was ended in December by a bolt of lightning.

This year, for the first time, the trophy meet that grew from the gymkhana’s equalisator meeting in the Chertsey Domain, has been forced off the racing calen-

dar to make way for the rescheduling of an Akaroa Trotting Club meeting at Motukarara that was abandoned in December because of an electrical storm.

That cancellation left Harness Racing New Zealand with a dilemma, a race meeting that needed a new date, but a racing calendar that was full.

It spotted Ashburton’s Chertsey Cup trials and decided a race day should take precedence and opted to reschedule Ashburton’s big trophy day to April 3.

And that’s upset plenty of people, said Ashburton Trotting Club president Chris Morrison.

“We’ve known about this for a while but we only got the confirmed new date a couple of weeks ago.

“For a start they were trying to give us another Monday but I resisted that, now we’ve got next Sunday,” he said.

Losing Easter Monday was far from ideal as the event generally attracted quite large crowds for a trials day and for many race fans became a family day out, Mr Morrison said.

The Chertsey Cup meet started after World War One as part of the annual Chertsey Gymkhana and when that event folded,

races continued to be held at the Chertsey track for several years.

About 20 years it was decided to move the race day to Ashburton.

Because the trophy day was a regular for many trainers, Morrison said he was still fielding calls from people wanting to enter horses.

It might not attract the same public support as an Easter Monday trials day, but he hopes trainers will continue to support the event in this year’s slot on April 3.

And he’s keeping his fingers crossed that the trials recapture their original day next year.

When champion trainer Barry Purdon says he fears Sky Major’s old foe in the Easter Cup at Addington tonight he isn’t talking about hot favourite Smolda.

It is former Derby winner Locharburn who Purdon rates as the one to beat in the $100,000 highlight of the harness racing weekend.

Just four months ago Sky Major and Smolda were fighting out favouritism for a vastly more important 3200m race at Addington – the New Zealand Cup – with Smolda a brave second then and Sky Major disappointing in a race that started a summer decline.

While he was sometimes left scratching his head by the form loss, Purdon always attributed the summer slump to Sky Major getting a lung infection from which he struggled to recover.

“I could see something wasn’t right with him so we gave him a break, missed some races and then tried to get him back,” says Purdon.

“But he wasn’t himself around the stables. He was still working well but he was sour with other horses.

“Then he went to Sydney and since he has come back he has been far more like his old self.

“He is in a better mood and working exceptionally so we are hopeful we can see something like is best this week.”

But it is not Smolda, who has been in rampant form this year, that Purdon thinks is the horse to beat tonight.

“Smolda will be tough but I think Locharburn could be even tougher,” says Purdon.

“We raced him quite a bit as a three-year-old and to be honest we could never beat him.

“He is a very good stayer and if he is spot on for Saturday night then he will be hard to beat.”

Locharburn has returned to the track showing glimpses of his best this season, with a stunning national record for 2600m the most graphic reminder of his motor.

But he was disappointing last start and looked to be out of sorts in his action so will need to bounce back tonight.

Still, if he can work to the lead a sub 4:0 time for the 3200m looks certain.

Smolda is still the one to beat even from his 20m handicap, which may not be as bad as it sounds.

He is the only horse on a handicap and with the rest of the field off the front line, Smolda should simply attach on to the back of the bunch with no traffic concerns.

Winning from there still won’t be easy but he came from a worse position to push Arden Rooney to a head in the NZ Cup and his only two runs over 3200m since have produced an Auckland Cup third and a Hunter Cup win. - NZME

Daisy tough to beat Exciting Kiwi raider Millwood Daisy is favourite despite a back row draw in tonight’s $102,000 Group 1 Bathurst Gold Tiara final (1730m).

The Cran Dalgety-trained filly looked a bit lazy and to have plenty in hand when she won her heat after sitting parked last week.

Luke McCarthy will take the reins and Millwood Daisy will need to be sharper against a much stronger field and from the back row (gate 11) to win the final.

“Luke’s been looking after her and said she pulled-up like she needed the run in the heat,” Dalgety said.

“He’s sure it will sharpen her up for this week.”

The Aussie TAB has Millwood Daisy $3.50 favourite from another heat winner Belligerence (gate three, $3.80), who is trained

by Peter Rixon of Divisive fame and will be driven by Amanda Turnbull.

Others with claims include

Dont Think Twice (gate 12, $5.50), Rockonbye (gate four, $6.50), Joyces Desire (gate five, $7.50) and Might And Rain (gate nine, $8.50).

I

t has been a mixed week for markets this week as investors have stayed on the sidelines largely in the lead-up to the Easter break. Midweek, Brussels was hit by an awful terror attack.

Previously, this type of event has seen large market movements. However, this time markets were noticeably muted following the event, with analysts questioning whether this is because sadly investors no longer see terror attacks as a market shock, but rather the new normal.

The standout performer for markets globally has been the NZX50, which hit a record close every day this week. The local index continues to make small daily increments, leading it gradually higher.

All markets have had a positive March so far, but the NZX is one of the only major markets that is in positive territory for the year to date, with most others still underwater following on from February sell-offs.

The highlight on the New Zealand economic calendar this week was migration data released on Monday. Yet again, net annual migration hit a high, driven by an influx of people from Australia, China and the Philippines. The Australian portion of migrants includes both Kiwis returning to New Zealand as well as a number of Australians seeking residency in New Zealand.

Strong migration has helped to underpin economic growth in New Zealand.

There have been a number of interim results from New Zealand companies on the agenda this week, mainly from the retail sector. Pumpkin Patch kicked off

The markets hardly flinched following the Brussels attack. the week with a lacklustre result that was pre-empted earlier in the month. The company warned that the lower New Zealand dollar had increased import costs and its online offering was moving backwards.

Kathmandu reported Tuesday and was a far more positive story. Sales improved, but more importantly, margins grew as the company stopped discounting and maintained cost controls.

Kathmandu confirmed full-year guidance of $30.2 million.

Hallenstein Glasson was the third and final retailer to report.

The clothing company continues to struggle in the tough competitive environment and although it grew sales, margins were squeezed.

Fonterra also reported its interim result this week, and saw earnings increase 77 per cent on the prior comparable period.

The company is well on track to deliver on full-year guidance and the dividend was set at the higher end of the range given earlier in the year at 40 cents per share. The ingredients business was a bright spot of the result, as the cost of goods sold was much lower and the product mix was better.

Globally things were reasonably quiet on the economic front with the most important announcements coming earlier in the week by way of Flash Purchasing Managers Indexes (PMIs). Flash PMIs give a preliminary indicator of economic activity for different regions by looking at manufacturing data.

Japan saw a contraction in its manufacturing sector during March. The stronger yen has meant less order flow from overseas, causing a downturn in the manufacturing sector.

The European composite PMI indicated an expansion in activity and at a faster pace than what had been seen in the previous months. The figure was ahead of expectations. However, on the same day a business confidence survey was released and was somewhat contradictory, reporting pessimism within the manufacturing sector and expectations of a slowdown.

A

s an Ashburton lass I grew up reading the Guardian.

But little did I know that one day I would in fact be one of its reporters, filling the paper with local news.

I always knew I wanted to write.

At Netherby School I’d tell people that I was going to be a writer or a reporter.

Now, as I depart the Guardian I know that tiny five-yearold me was on to something.

Many of my friends from journalism school moved on to big cities far from home, but I know now that there is something pretty special about writing for your hometown paper.

Over the past 18 months I have been privileged enough to report on all sorts of wonderful things that have happened in the district.

It hasn’t always been easy, as reporters we touch on the good, the bad and everything in between.

But I have met some brilliantly memorable characters and written stories about people that I will never forget.

I got to try my hand at a lot – sitting in on court, covering the netball season, writing about stolen tractors, debilitating health conditions and 72nd wedding anniversaries.

I was lucky enough to get to write for the Guardian’s additional publications – particularly YOU Magazine – and tackle all sorts of issues, from post-natal depression, to the rise of health apps and eating disorders.

When I turned up on the doorstep of the Guardian I was a terrified UC graduate with no idea what I was doing.

It was tough, but I learned a lot.

I’ve worked with a great team, reporters have come and gone but their support has never faltered.

The banter too will be sorely missed, but possibly not as much as the food.

I’m pretty sure I nearly ate the Guardian out of house and home – well, I gave it my best shot anyway.

The mystery of the missing Easter eggs T

his year is the first Easter in a long time that I haven’t been frenetically churning out chocolate Easter Eggs and trying to keep the Farmer away from the chocolate machines.

On many a morning he would pop into our chocolate-making area, wine biscuits in hand, and wander over to the tempering machine to self-dunk biccies in copious amounts of chocolate.

He also has a penchant for licorice and all our bulk bags of the stuff had to be hidden as often you would come out in the morning to make chocolate bars and reach for the licorice and return with an empty bag.

But this year there is none of that – or so I thought.

I’ve been happily buying little bits and bobs of Easter eggs and hiding them in my linen cupboard. Some little ones have been put in a bucket, of which the kiddiewinks are allowed two a night for good behaviour.

Now as you know, the Farmer has had an enforced diet revolution recently.

Instead of potato chips, there are rice crackers and fruit is now replacing biscuits. And to be fair on most days he’s been doing quite well, at least when I’m in the house.

But I began to get a little suspicious last week when I bought the bucket down for the kids one night that the number of eggs was going down faster than John Key’s new flag.

I admit to not being mathematically savvy, but even I couldn’t figure out how half a bucket could be missing in one

day and then all but six left the next.

“It wasn’t me love.” He shook his head adamantly when I broached the subject with him.

“It’s those children of yours.

They’ve found your hiding spot.”

I know a good wife should trust her husband and move on, but my antlers were up, my antennae ready – after all, I well remember the year he decided to cut out footprints and place them on a path to my last hiding spot for treats.

So I refilled the bucket and hid it in a different spot.

The next night it was almost half empty again and none of my children nor my husband were confessing to having scoffed them.

And so it was the following night that I happened to have an outing in the early evening that required the Farmer to cook the children tea.

By cooking, I meant air frying some chips, frying some steak and nuking some vegetables. I made him promise he’d make sure the kids would eat a healthy tea.

“Yeah love,” he rolled his eyes as I left.

When I got home I was pleasantly surprised to find the kids in bed, the house tidy and the

dishes done.

“What did you have for tea?” I asked.

“Oh … some chips, a bit of steak, some bread and a salad …

Yep,” he patted his belly. “I’m a good cook love.”

Call it women’s intuition, but I was pretty sure something smelt a little fishy so I asked the eldest daughter what she had for tea. She confirmed the Farmer’s menu, as did the six-year-old.

It was the three-year-old, however, that blew his cover the following morning when she was sitting on my knee.

“We had McDonalds,” she grinned delightedly, before making the shooshing noise, with a

finger to her lips. “But we not tell Mummy, or Daddy get grumpy.”

“Oh?” I kept probing. “And did you have any chocolate?”

“No,” she shook her little blonde head solemnly. “But Daddy did. He ate all the eggs.”

To which I responded, “and he’ll be laying them all over again when I get hold of him.”

“I never lied,” the Farmer responded when I confronted him.

“Like I said – we had chips, a bit of steak, some bread and salad.

It’s called a Big Mac combo love – all the food groups whipped into one. Don’t ever accuse me of not looking after our kids!”

Confrontations are everywhere to be found W hen you look around us negative and positive confrontation is everywhere to be found.

We hear about them in the news, our TVs carry images of conflicts happening around the world, we find it in relationships that break down or workplaces where people are victimised and, sadly, we sometimes find it in our churches.

The world is in conflict. But this isn’t some new craze sweeping the world. Confrontation has been around since the time of the Bible and the Easter story is full of it – both negative and positive confrontation.

The Easter story conflict begins on Palm Sunday with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, symbolising he was coming in peace.

He wasn’t about causing confrontation and conflict. For first-century Jews Jerusalem was the centre of their world, the “Holy City”. It was also the centre

for co-operation with the Roman governor.

On Palm Sunday Jesus came from the east and from the west came the Roman imperial parade, the contrast underlies the central conflict that unfolds during the forthcoming week.

It was a week of conflicts. Jesus caused a conflict when he overturned the tables in the temple.

The authorities engaged in a series of verbal confrontations with Jesus hoping they will catch him out, but they fail. Jesus is confronted by those who come to arrest him.

There is confrontation over whether Jesus should be let go or crucified and, to avoid further quarrellings and altercations,

Pilate sentences Jesus to death.

To balance all that there is the positive confrontation of love and kindness shown by the women anointing Jesus with expensive perfume, and all who saw Jesus were confronted by his humility.

I am sure there are times when we, like Peter, are wracked with internal conflict.

You have that inner battle going on, in your mind you have conversations with yourself, weighing up the positives and negatives.

I wonder if some of the disciples were confronted with the cost if they were seen to be friends of Jesus after his arrest.

How often have we been like that and been confronted with the cost of being involved in something or with someone?

Easter Sunday sees us confronted with the resurrection of Jesus, whether you believe in the bodily resurrection or not.

Something happened that day and all that Jesus stood for didn’t die away with his death, it came to life, it was resurrected on Easter Day and continues to live, touch and change people’s lives two thousand years later So tomorrow when Easter Day dawns and the Son (sun) rises, we will be confronted by what that means for us.

This year it may be good to be confronted with the question, “So what does Easter day mean for me?”

Terrorist plot foiled

BY GRIFF WITTE The French interior minister said that police have foiled a terrorist plot by arresting a man believed to be at “an advanced stage” of planning an attack on French soil.

The suspect, a French citizen, was at a high level of a terrorism network, said Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, and the arrest was the culmination of an investigation that lasted several weeks.

But Cazeneuve said that there was no apparent link to the Brussels attacks.

The French arrest came as the Belgian prosecutor’s office announced six arrests in Brussels’s Schaerbeek and Jette neighborhoods, part of its investigation into Tuesday’s attacks.

Belgian authorities have been scrambling to track down suspects who remain at large as they confront accusations that they had failed to disrupt the plot that claimed dozens of lives this week.

It was not immediately clear whether those arrested had participated in the attacks at Brussels Airport and on a subway car.

Belgian authorities still have not nailed down how many attackers were involved and how many people are on the loose as it became clearer that the Brussels attacks had links to the November massacre in Paris.

A top European security official warned yesterday that the threat of Islamic State attacks is greater than previous assessments, underscoring calls for tighter security even as police widened the hunt for accomplices in the Brussels blasts.

Rob Wainwright, chief of Europol, said that the terrorist group has adopted a “more aggressive” posture toward Europe and that security authorities were focused on about 5000 suspects who had become radicalised in Europe and traveled to Syria to fight.

Many have now returned.

“We are faced by a more dangerous, a more urgent security threat from so-called Islamic State,” Wainwright said yesterday.

“It threatens not just France and Belgium but a number of European countries at the same time . . . . It is certainly the most serious threat we have faced in at least a decade.”

Wainwright spoke ahead of an emergency session of European security chiefs in Brussels. European leaders have been criticised for not acting more quickly to integrate security strategies and were under pressure to produce results.

Meanwhile, police pressed ahead with a manhunt for a suspected accomplice who is believed to have fled Tuesday’s attack at Brussels Airport.

The French newspaper Le Monde and the Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported that video monitors had captured images of another possible accomplice, who is believed to have slipped away on the Brussels subway.

Criticism has also been levelled at the Dutch government, which yesterday released a letter from Turkish authorities announcing their decision to deport Ibrahim el-Bakraoui to the Netherlands in July, after he was apparently detained at the Turkey-Syria border.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had said Thursday that Turkey explicitly warned Dutch authorities that Bakraoui was “a foreign terrorist fighter.”

But the letter does not explain why Bakraoui was deported, and Dutch Justice Minister Ard van der Steur said Turkey did not explain its decision.

Because Bakraoui was not on any watch lists at the time and because he had a valid Belgian passport, van der Steur said, “there was no reason to take any action.”

In a sign of the intense pressure on Belgian authorities after what are widely regarded as a host of security failures in the lead-up to Tuesday’s attacks, the country’s interior and justice ministers offered to resign Thursday, according to Belgian news media reports.

Both Interior Minister Jan Jambon and Justice Minister Koen Geens have come under criticism for their departments’ inability to disrupt the terrorist cell before it struck, despite links between the Brussels plotters and the attackers in Paris in November.

The Brussels attackers had been on authorities’ radar.

One of the men who would become a suicide bomber, Khalid el-Bakraoui, 27, had even been subject to an international arrest warrant.

The Belgian prosecutor’s office said that the warrant was issued December 11 and that he was wanted for using a false name to rent an apartment in the Belgian city of Charleroi that was used as a hideout for the Paris attackers.

A photo, released to Turkish media Thursday, showed a police mug shot of the elder Bakraoui - smiling and unshaven, wearing a dark T-shirt - prior to his deportation to the Netherlands in July.

A variety of personal details about the bombmaker trickled out yesterday.

Najim Laachraoui, hailed in an Islamic State video for devising the explosive packages that killed 31 people in Brussels, was once a Catholic schoolboy and his younger brother has become an international Taekwondo competitor.

Yet a news conference with the bombmaker’s brother and an interview with the director of the Catholic school did little to shed light on what led Laachraoui, described as a good student and “kind and intelligent” brother, down the path so many others have followed to violent extremism.

The Catholic school in the ethnically mixed Brussels neighbourhood of Schaerbeek welcomed non-Catholics.

“He was a good student,” recalled Veronica Pellegrini, the director of the Institut de la Sainte-Famille d’Helmet. Pellegrini said he spent six years at the school and studied humanities.

In an interview, Pellegrini said the school never asks the students what religion they observe. And she said that the school has not heard from

Laachraoui since he graduated in 2009.

The school’s website describes its philosophy: “For us, school is a place of learning and a space for a common life.

Each student acquires knowledge and skills, learns to live and to work with others.”

On another page, describing the school’s philosophy, it quotes from the Bible: “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. . . . Do not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth.”

It was another fragment in the lives of violent Islamist extremists who grew up in Brussels in a manner that gave no hints at what they would later become.

Laachraoui’s brother Mourad, a well-known athlete for his taekwondo skills, said that while his family was a practicing Muslim family, he did not notice any changes in his brother’s behavior.

After Najim left for Syria, Mourad said that tried to find him and get him to return.

He tried using Facebook, but Najim stopped using his real name. Their parents called the police in 2013 and saw police again in December after the Paris attacks.

Mourad said he felt sorrow for the victims of the bombings. Asked about his sports career, he said, “I want to continue my sports. I am fighting. I have always been fighting and I will continue fighting.” As for his younger brothers and Syria, he said, “I am now the oldest one, and I will prevent the others from going.”

Najim Laachraoui’s DNA was found in a Brussels apartment raided last week. The discovery of a militant cell there eventually led to the arrest of Salah Abdeslam last Friday.

Abdeslam is believed to have been involved in logistics for the Paris massacres, which claimed 130 lives.

Stones roll into Cuba The Rolling Stones arrived in Cuba’s capital yesterday, on the eve of the rock band’s historic free concert in a country where its music was once silenced. Mick Jagger offered a brief greeting in Spanish and said he was happy to be on the island.

The concert will come three days after President Barack Obama wrapped up a visit to the communist-run island during which he declared an end to the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas. “We have performed in many special places during our long career, but this show in Havana will be a milestone for us, and, we hope, for all our friends in Cuba, too,” the band said. In the heat of Cuba’s revolution from the 1960s to the 1980s, foreign bands like The Rolling Stones were considered subversive and blocked from the radio. Cubans listened to their music in secret, passing records from hand to hand.

Mandopop queen visiting She Hong Kong’s golden girl of Mandopop, and Karen Mok is bringing her show to New Zealand with her Regardez World Tour.

One of Asia’s most successful recording artists, Karen is of Chinese, Welsh, Persian and German descent and speaks several languages. The 45-year-old is also a singer, songwriter, actress, and for this concert, she will be doubling up as concert director and performer. “Karen Mok is a household name to most Chinese people, because if they have not heard her songs, they would have seen her in the movies,” said event organiser Paul Young.“I know many people are excited that she is coming to New Zealand.”

In brief Pilot cleared by Qantas Qantas cleared international pilot Paul Whyte to fly one month before police believe he deliberately crashed his light aircraft into the ocean off northern NSW. The Lennox Head man passed a mental health check in February even though he had been struggling to deal with a marriage breakdown for nearly a year.

‘Butcher’ convicted A United Nations court has convicted former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic of genocide and nine other charges and sentenced him to 40 years in prison. The conviction, made overnight, relates to Karadzic orchestrating Serb atrocities throughout Bosnia’s 1992-95 war that left 100,000 people dead.

As he sat down after hearing his sentence, Karadzic slumped slightly in his chair, but showed little emotion. The UN court in the Hague, Netherlands found Karadzic guilty of genocide in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which 8000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered.

Trump ‘a snivelling coward’ A nasty feud that escalated yesterday between Donald Trump and his chief Republican rival over their wives set off a new wave of alarm among establishment Republicans, who fear the GOP front-runner would drive away female voters in a generalelection fight with likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s gender problem flared again this week as he and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas traded insults while Cruz’s wife, Heidi, became the target of vitriol on social media from Trump and his supporters.

At one point, the real estate mogul retweeted an unflattering image contrasting Heidi Cruz’s appearance with his wife, Melania, a retired model.

“The images are worth a thousand words,” the caption read on the photo that Trump retweeted to his 7.2 million followers.

That message and others have prompted an outcry among Republicans and Democrats alike, while Cruz said that “real men don’t bully women.”

“Our spouses and our children are off-bounds,” Cruz told reporters while campaigning in Dane, Wisconsin.

“It is not acceptable for a big, loud, New York bully to attack my wife. It is not acceptable for him

to make insults, to send nasty tweets.”

He added: “Donald, you’re a snivelling coward. Leave Heidi the hell alone.”

The altercation underscores the striking nastiness of the GOP primary race and the uncomfortable gender politics surrounding Trump, who has a long history of making incendiary remarks about women and their appearances.

Trump has shown little reluctance in attacking his female rivals – or some of his rivals’ spouses – in ways that strike many as sexist or demeaning, and many fear the insults are a harbinger of the gutter rhetoric to come if he faces Clinton in November.

Trump has called Clinton “very shrill,” belittles her for a lack of stamina and energy, and late last year jabbed her and husband, Bill Clinton, for the latter’s marital indiscretions while he was president.

In another instance, Trump said Hillary Clinton “got schlonged” in her 2008 primary fight against then-Senator Barack Obama.

“I have some very real concerns should he become the nominee.

“I think it would be catastrophic for our party,” said GOP strategist Katie Packer, who leads the

anti-Trump Our Principles super PAC. “Half of the reason why I’m fighting so hard to stop Donald Trump is because I think he’s a walking, talking stereotype of a sexist misogynistic pig.”

Polling shows Trump sliding sharply among women in recent months, hurting the GOP’s already shaky position with that demographic.

Trump’s favorability numbers have decreased 10 points among women nationwide since November, to 23 percent, while his unfavorable number among women has jumped from 64 percent to 75 percent, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll taken earlier this month.

The changes among men have been less pronounced, with 37 percent now favorable and 59 percent unfavorable.

In the states that have voted so far, Trump received an average of 41 per cent of the male vote and 34 per cent of the female vote.

The fight with Cruz began earlier this week when Make America Awesome, an anti-Trump super PAC, circulated ads on Facebook featuring a risque photograph of Melania Trump from a 15-year-old GQ magazine cover.

It was part of a concerted push to diminish the billionaire

among values voters in Utah.

“Meet Melania Trump. Your next first lady. Or, you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday,” the ad read.

Trump, who went on to lose the Utah caucuses, excoriated Cruz and issued a threat via Twitter: “Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”

Trump - who wrongly alleges that Cruz was behind the ad defended the tweet on Fox Business News Channel on Thursday, saying it was a “disgraceful” and “terrible thing” that demeaned his wife, “a very, very successful model.”

Then Trump retweeted the unflattering image of Heidi Cruz, setting off a fresh series of condemnations.

To Trump’s critics, the attacks on Cruz are just the latest in a troubling pattern of reducing women to their physical appearance and disparaging them in exceptionally personal ways.

Exhibit A is the long-running, on-again-off-again feud with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, whom Trump called “crazy” and “average in so many ways” during a series of tweets last week.

Fox News said the name-calling is part of a “sick obsession” that “is beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate.”

Former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan says he blames himself for the incident that ended with a Florida jury awarding him $140 million in his privacy lawsuit against Gawker Media over the publication of a sex tape. Hogan told NBC’s “Today” show that he wonders what people think of him now, saying it’s something that never goes away. Hogan says he sued Gawker because he never wants anyone else to go through what he did after the website published the video in which he has sex with his former best friend’s wife. Gawker maintained the footage was newsworthy information about a public figure.

Tango in Buenos Aires Less than 24 hours in Buenos Aires, and Barack Obama is already doing the tango. The president and first lady Michelle Obama were attending a state dinner in the Argentine capital when they were pulled abruptly onto the dance floor on by a pair of tango dancers hired to provide the entertainment.

At first, the woman in the shimmering gold dress seemed to content to twirl with her partner, but then she made a beeline for the president and beckoned him to the floor. “No, no,” Obama’s face seemed to say, as he declined her invitation not once but multiple times. But the dancer wasn’t to be deterred.

Minibus crash kills 12 A head-on collision between a minibus and a truck has killed 12 people in central France.

The victims were reportedly all Portuguese nationals returning home from Switzerland for Easter.

The head-on collision happened around midnight. Witnesses told police the minibus had swerved over to the other side of the road and into the truck.
