A crime spree that lasted through the late hours of Monday night and into the early hours of yesterday morning culminated in two arrests being made by Ashburton police outside the Devon Tavern. The two offenders, a 43-year-old-man and a 15-year-old youth, have been charged in relation to three of the four offences which took place while further enquiries are being made and more charges may result. Ashburton’s Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said his officers were kept on their toes for most of the night. “It was a busy night, but we are really pleased to be able to get a result and get
two offenders into custody,” he said. The first report for the night came from the Collegiate Squash Club at around 11.40pm on Monday night and then a second call was received for the same venue at 5.33am the next morning. A short while later, at around 6.30am, another report was received of a breakin at Mr Mann’s Cafe on Burnett Street with offenders attempting to gain access by breaking through a back door. Almost immediately following the Mr Mann’s incident, another report was received from the Devon Tavern which is where officers apprehended the two
offenders. “The 43-year-old has been arrested and charged with both break-ins at Collegiate and also at the Devon Tavern, he will also face charges of resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of an offensive weapon.” Officers were uninjured during the incident. “The 15-year-old will be dealt with through the Youth Court.”

Amy Adams will retire from politics next year after a shock announcement in Parliament yesterday. The Selwyn MP described the decision as a bolt from the blue for everyone else, but for her it had been coming for quite some time and the decision was made a couple of months ago. National Party leader, Simon Bridges was informed “a while ago” before Adams announced her decision to caucus yesterday. “It’s a difficult decision and a deeply personal decision,” Adams said. “Ultimately it came down to the life I wanted to lead for me and my family.” Adams ran for the leadership of the National Party last year following the departure of Bill English and finished second behind Simon Bridges. She subsequently became the finance spokeswoman and was regarded as one of the party’s heavy-hitting frontline MPs. But after a 12-year stint in politics, Adams, whose electorate covers Ashburton District areas such as Rakaia, Dorie, Chertsey and Lauriston, said yesterday that it
was time to step back. “This is a decision ultimately about what I want and the fact remains [that] I want my life back,” she said. “When I started this job my kids were eight and 10, and my son is now graduating university this year and my daughter is there as well. It just makes you think about the life you want to lead. “When I came into politics I made a couple of promises to myself, one was that I wouldn’t cause a by-election, which means that when it comes around you’ve got to think, can I give this another three years? “And the other was the day that I didn’t think I could give it 100 per cent of my passion, it was time to go.” Colleague and fellow National MP, Rangitata’s Andrew Falloon admitted to being a bit shocked by the announcement and said that Adams had been invaluable to him during his early time in parliament as an MP. “Amy can be rightly proud of her achievements in government and locally as MP for Selwyn,” he said. “As communications minister she oversaw the roll-out of ultra-fast broadband in Ashburton
to ensure we’re better connected to the country and the world. “She’s been a friend to me in my first 20 months as a Member of Parliament and an invaluable source of advice and, while I’m sad she won’t be standing again, I know she’s looking forward to some well-deserved time with Don and the family.” Adams said that despite giving up her shadow portfolios, she would continue to work hard for her Selwyn constituents in the time she had left in Parliament. Adams was also Associate Minister for Canterbury Earthquake Recovery and has previously spoken about how the 2010 earthquake shook her home with such force that it threw a fish tank across her daughter’s bedroom, shattering on the bed inches from her head. Adams was considered a strong minister under the leadership of English and John Key, holding a variety of portfolios at various times, including justice, communications, broadcasting, courts, internal affairs and the environment. She admitted to not being sure what was next, but added that it was exciting.

Mid Canterbury gun buy-back locations revealed Police have announced five Mid Canterbury collection events for the Government’s firearms gun amnesty and buy-back scheme. The first will be at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on July 27, while the other four will be in Methven and Rakaia. The five events are among 22 in Canterbury and among 192 col-
lection events around the country. Police minister Stuart Nash said the events were being held over three months, in venues that ranged from tiny community halls to large stadiums. The Rakaia events will be in the Rakaia Community Hall on August 3, August 10 and September
28, while the Methven venue on August 4 has yet to be confirmed. Nash said the community sites were familiar to locals. “Police want to make it as easy as possible for firearms owners to take part. We have heard from firearms owners that they have busy lives and just want to get the handover done easily with mini-
mum fuss.” Nash said farmers would be catered for at rural collection events. Most of the details can be completed online and on the day firearms owners should turn up with their personalised reference number, bank account details, firearms licence and photo ID. The firearms should be cleared
of ammunition and in a safe carry bag. A list of collection events was on the police website and more dates would be added right up to the end of the amnesty on December 20. A list of retailer and dealers – who will be able to collect firearms on police’s behalf – will be announced in the coming weeks.

Brooke had an eating disorder and Daly collected her from home to make sure she attended class and ensured she ate. And when her course was completed, Chambers said, Daly helped her daughter find a job, one she’s now held for four years. “School just wasn’t working for her, but where to now for these kids? There’s obviously a real need,” she said. Most students have also been
assisted with achieving a driver’s licence. Ashburton offered two training courses for students in computing and hospitality. Each takes about 18 months to complete. While she’s there to support them, Daly said her students were working in an environment that encouraged them to be self motivating. Virtually every student stayed the distance and completed their course, she said. “They all come for different

An education and employment programme that has helped hundreds of students around the Ashburton District secure qualifications and find jobs is about to close. The Salvation Army is pulling out of the education and employment arm of its work and while it acknowledges the valuable role its programmes have played in the lives of thousands of people, changing funding models mean it has run at a loss for the past five years. The closure was signalled several weeks ago and while other providers have stepped up to fill the gap in some parts of the country, this has not happened in Ashburton. Yesterday, present and past students gathered to thank tutor Heather Daly and to speak about the positive impact she and the education courses had on their lives. For Matthew Nieuwenhuize, joining Daly’s course provided him with a second-chance education. He left school at 15 to care for a sick parent, but said being able to enrol for the Salvation Army’s introduction to computing course on programming and coding meant he achieved NCEA level one and two. And that led to securing a job in IT. “I know a lot of people for whom school doesn’t work. They come here and Heather puts in so much work and everyone supports one another and helps,” he said. We have a lot of success stories, but now this has been taken away.” Nationally the service has been running for 41 years and more than 80,000 people have been through its courses. For the past five years the Salvation Army has picked up the funding shortfall, but this had become unsustainable and the provider role will end on June 30.
From P1 As a result of the arrests, police executed a search warrant at an address in Ashburton which led to more charges against the offending at Collegiate. Jenkins also confirmed that offences which took place at the Collegiate Squash Club over the weekend were linked to yesterday’s arrests. He added that the 43-year-old had been relocated to Christchuch and police would be strongly opposing bail when he appeared in court and that they would be looking for some strict bail conditions for the youth. While not confirming that the Mr Mann’s incident was related to the arrests, Jenkins said they would be continuing to monitor CCTV footage from around the area in search of further evidence to see if it was linked to the other offences. The double blow for the Collegiate Squash Club and its members follows on from a long line of offending at the venue over the past two months with news of the weekend’s break-ins featuring in yesterday’s edition of the Guardian. On Sunday night two glass windows were smashed and in another incident recently a vehicle was stolen while players were playing squash. That followed on from two incidents in April in which a 43-year-old man was arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods following break-ins on April 11 and 12. The man was found guilty, jailed for two months and ordered to make reparation of $400. The Collegiate club has around 36 members, but often does not get a full attendance to club nights. Committee member Logan Ford said in Tuesday’s Guardian they may have to look at changing the way the clubrooms are treated and hired out. “It may get to a point where it can’t be hired out and not used by the league team (the Ashburton Barbarians) so we can keep a better track of who is coming and going; but then that makes it not affordable to run and we may have to increase subs which we don’t want to do,” he said.

Celebrating 50 years of dance By Sue Newman

For Charmaine Quaid, a dance recital to celebrate her 50th year as a dance teacher was an occasion that was high on emotion and more than a little worry. In the days leading up to Saturday’s two-show recital, she was watching the number of dancers laid low by illness mount. And that meant one dress rehearsal simply didn’t happen, while another saw yawning gaps in each group of dancers, but in the true spirit of theatre, the show went on. In some group dances partners were missing, but Quaid said she was impressed by the way some of the youngest members of the school managed to continue with their routine and cover up for their missing classmates. “Some classes, only half were there and that was really disappointing for the students,” she said. es past were shown on screen and that was quite an emotional moment. And at the end of the show, it was a heart-warming moment when a large number of past pupils came on stage to
share in the celebrations, Quaid said. It wasn’t until she watched the slide show of past shows and past dance school stars that the reality of 50 years as a teacher hit
home, she said. “Those years just seem to have melted in to one another, it just flows on and dance never really changes, the little ones are still there struggling to get their feet into first position.” After each recital, there’s always a nostalgic moment or two when costumes are washed and packed away. “That’s always the sad part, you’re playing make believes with a show, it’s the closest thing to fantasy you can get,” she said. In the past DanceWorx has staged recitals every year, but now it’s usually a biennial event because of the huge amount of work involved for both parents and young dancers. Looking ahead, dancers will be focusing on end-of-year exams, but Quaid knows that with a few weeks’ break from this year’s recital, the ideas for the next performance will start flowing. “Right now I’m still a bit shellshocked and all I’m focusing on is getting the students back into class – fit and well, she said.

The Ashburton Sports Hall was a hive of activity on Saturday as the crowds flocked in for the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society South Island Show. Hundreds of ducks, geese, hens, roosters, game birds and small birds went under the microscope in a bid to take out the top prizes. Despite it being a busy time on the calendar for fanciers, society president John Taylor said they were pleasantly surprised with the number of entries to the show. “It was the national show in Nelson the week before so we were maybe expecting a few less, but we still had up over 800 entries which puts us at about a normal show,” he said. “There is also one in Christchurch this weekend with about a thousand entries, so there is still plenty of fanciers out there and plenty of birds as well.” Taylor said people had come from far and wide to visit the show, including some that had shown an interest in getting into the hobby. “It is encouraging as we do need a few more to come along and join the committee,” he said. “A few expressed an interest, which is fantastic. The more the merrier, as there is a hard core that do seem to do most of the work.”
Good numbers turned up to the Ashburton Sports Hall at the weekend.

Rule plea after scooter death NZME Debra Christensen’s head was left bleeding and wedged against the wheel of a bus yesterday morning after she was knocked out by a Lime scooter rider near Auckland’s Victoria Park. Her distraught husband, Paul Charman, spoke to the Herald about the terrifying incident from Auckland City Hospital’s emergency department. The incident came less than 12 hours after a man riding a Lime scooter was killed on the same road. Charman said his wife was rushed to hospital after she got off the bus on Fanshawe Street, opposite Victoria Park, and was struck by the Lime scooter. “She doesn’t remember what happened after that because she was knocked out cold. “Her head was under the wheel of a bus, that’s how bad it was,” Charman said. He said his wife, who was a keen mountain climber and adventure-lover, had lacerations to her face and skull and they were awaiting head scans to see if there had been any further damage. It was possible she also had broken ribs.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford said work was under way on safety rules for e-scooters. Charman said the bus driver was so shaken by the incident he had to finish his shift. A witness at the scene described seeing Christensen lying on the ground bleeding after being hit by a young person riding a Lime scooter. “It is absolute madness to allow those things on footpaths — is it going to take the death of someone’s child before they get banned?” the male witness said. Charman said the crazy thing was when they got to hospital, another person was also there with head injuries after getting hit by a Lime scooter.
“The cyclist was on Kingsland cycle path at 7.36am today when he was hit from behind by an e-scooter.” He said people should feel safe on footpaths, not scared they might be hit by a Lime scooter. “They are unstable and we need a university to do a study to test their stability. This shouldn’t be happening,” Charman said. St John confirmed they were called to the incident on Fanshawe Street. “We responded with one ambulance and transported one patient in a moderate condition to Auckland Hospital,” a spokes-
woman said. On Monday night a 59-yearold man was killed while riding a Lime scooter along the same road. It was the first fatal accident involving the controversial e-scooters in New Zealand. Auckland councillor Christine Fletcher has called for “a complete review” of the e-scooters in a bid to introduce tighter safety regulations. But Transport Minister Phil Twyford says it is too soon to say if the death of a man on a Lime scooter will prompt tighter e-scooter safety rules. “I think it would be premature to make any comment about the circumstances of this incident or any implications it might have for safety regulation until we know more about what exactly happened.” Twyford said his thoughts were with the family of the man who died. The Government already has work under way on assessing the safety regulations of Lime and other such e-scooters, which is being led by Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. “That will include rules about where Lime scooters can be used in terms of speed limits.”
Uber driver on trial An Uber driver accused of the death of a father told police the central Auckland crash “happened very quickly, in the blink of an eye”. Police say Daljinder Singh was preoccupied with finding a drop-off location for his passenger when he fatally struck Daniel Kopa two years ago. The 34-yearold father of four was rushed to hospital but died after his life support was turned off. Singh, who was charged with operating a vehicle carelessly causing death, was on trial at the Auckland District Court yesterday before Judge Peter Butler. - NZME
Attache confined New Zealand’s former top military attache to the United States has been sentenced to home detention after being found guilty of planting a hidden bathroom camera at the Kiwi embassy in Washington DC for his own “sexual gratification”. But he continues to deny his offending. Alfred Keating, the country’s former Assistant Chief of Navy, was sentenced yesterday in the Auckland District Court by Judge Robert Ronayne after his nearly two-week trial in April. The now disgraced former naval officer was found guilty by a jury of attempting to make an intimate visual recording. He will now spend four months and 15 days on home detention for what the judge said was “bizarre and reprehensible” offending. - NZME

When the man, 25, emerged from the Alexander Avenue property after the 12-hour standoff he was holding a baby, Stuff reported. The standoff ended just before 2am yesterday. The accused appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday on charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm and discharging a firearm.
He was granted interim name suppression, and remanded in custody to reappear on July 17 in Napier District Court. Napier police confirmed a gun was fired as part of a 12-hour siege. Several schools were forced into lockdown on Monday afternoon and streets were cordoned off. Residents were kept from their homes during the standoff for much of the night before police arrested a man shortly before 2am yesterday morning. Armed police blocked off the street for hours and negotiators
were on the scene prior to the cordon being lifted. All the streetlights were also off, although police refused to confirm if they’d ordered them to go dark. The public were alerted to the incident about 2.30pm on Monday when nearby William Colenso College, Richmond School, Henry Hill School and Maraenui Bilingual School were placed into lockdown and police set up a base on the corner of Dinwiddie and Waterworth avenues. went to pick her daughter up from school but when she got back they weren’t allowed back to their home. She heard a loud noise around 1pm – which she believed could have been a gunshot. “It’s not unusual to hear loud noises so didn’t think too much after that,” she said. “It set our dogs off barking. I thought someone had crashed into my car but that looked fine. “It wasn’t until I left to get my daughter from school that police were everywhere. By the time I came home couldn’t get back in.”

Positives in going out on own terms Y
ou’ve got to hand it to Amy Adams because nothing about what unfolded yesterday would have been easy for the proud politician. But there’s something quite fitting about someone as affable as Ms Adams signing off on her own terms instead of allowing herself to be fed to the wolves at some point further down the line in her political career. Irrelevant of political bias or standing, Adams has been a solid part of the Selwyn electorate, which of course encompasses some of our own region, and has always portrayed herself well when the big moments have rolled along.
While she’ll be most likely talked about for dropping a bombshell just over a year out from an election and announcing her retirement from politics, Adams should most probably be lauded for taking a stand and saying, no, I’ve had enough. Too often in life we hear people say they wish they got out of their job earlier, avoided the stress
and other issues that came with working in high pressure situations and those same people will say that taking a step back and gaining a bit of focus is the best thing they ever did. And it very much depends on how you look at the balance of your working life and your life outside of the office, or tractor cab or wherever it might be. Adams wants to spend more time with her family and to make up for lost time following 12 solid years as a non-stop politician and a long career as a lawyer before that. The only problem is that not enough of us look at it that way. We’re too busy worrying about
how we’re going to pay that next bill, keep the roof over our heads and food on the table. That’s why the majority of us work, to ensure that we are able to enjoy the necessities of life. The prospect of standing up one day and saying, no that’s enough, I want out, is a daunting one, but for our own health and our own mindsets perhaps it’s one we should maybe think about a little bit more. Mental health is a major issue across New Zealand at the moment and we’re coming off the back of a couple of years in which the number of people seeking help for mental health-related issues is growing at a record rate.
A good portion of that will relate to issues coming from the workplace, whether it be work pressure, internal battles with staff and management, or overall staff morale. So, with those numbers and factors growing almost by the day it’s important more people take that step back and look for help or an alternative before it all becomes too much to handle. That’s a far cry from where Adams is at. She just feels like she’s given as much to the role as she can and is ready to put her feet up for a bit and gain some perspective before tackling her next challenge. And she deserves it too.

Looming reshuffle no easy task for Ardern By Barry Soper
I
t seems somewhat appropriate that Jacinda Ardern’s first outing of the day in the Beehive tomorrow will be to speak at a Treaty of Versailles function remembering the end of World War One. Later in the day she’ll be announcing what she says will be a minor reshuffle of her Cabinet – and this for some leaders in the past has become a declaration of war to those who believe they’re worthy of better. The reshuffle will be minor because most of those who should be in Cabinet are already there. And the amount of time Ardern’s taken getting around to shuffling the chairs just goes to show how hard leadership is for a person

his year is an exciting time around New Zealand, as communities will soon come together to decide who they would like to represent them around the council table for the next three years. Although polling day for the local body elections is still four months away, we are about to start entering the election period, so there is lots to think about for voters and potential candidates alike. Local government is a system of locally elected people representing their communities and making decisions on their behalf. Being the mayor, a councillor or community board member involves both leadership and representation skills, and there will be people right across our district weighing up whether they would like to put their name forward for election. For the Ashburton District, there will be five councillors elected to represent the Ashburton Ward, two each to represent the Eastern and Western Wards, and five members for the Methven Community Board. Voters will also elect a mayor to represent the entire district. If you’re unsure which ward you are in, there are maps available on the council website

Think of the amount of time it took to move Clare Curran on from broadcasting for failing to declare meetings, or the drawnout process of showing Meka Whaitiri the door after she was accused of bullying. The difficulty for Ardern is that for nine years she essentially moulded into the Labour background until she walked into the Mt Albert electorate when David Shearer called it a day and then stepped up when Annette King decided she’d had her day and moved on as deputy leader. Before she even had time to really get used to leadership, Andrew Little was having cold feet and persuaded her to do the job she claims she never wanted
and of course Winston Peters gave her the nod for the ultimate political prize. So now it’s time to shaft some of her colleagues and with someone from her background that’s no easy task. Her kitchen Cabinet cobber Phil Twyford’s feet wouldn’t have touched the ground if a more experienced leader was wielding the machete with the KiwiBuild cock-ups and the trouble in transport. But she likes him around so he’s likely to be left sitting at the table, but surely with a portfolio change. And who could forget the Inspector Clouseau bumbling over the case involving drug runner Karel Sroubek? He didn’t know whether he was coming or going, and neither it seems did Immi-

gration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway, telling him he could stay before deciding he had to go. Sroubek’s still here fighting his case and Lees-Galloway should be doing to same on Thursday. Speaking of fighting, Meka Whaitiri’s done her time and at the very least should be restored to a Minister-in-Waiting outside of Cabinet. And the man who was doing her job and Clare Curran’s, Kris Faafoi, will almost certainly get the call into the inner sanctum. Faafoi’s the rare exception of successfully making the transition from journalism, telling them how they should do it, to actually doing it. So he’ll be feeling about as relaxed as the New Zealand First ministers, who are of course untouchable.

Cops ‘close in on suspect’ NZME Police working on the Madeleine McCann case are reportedly closing in on a new prime suspect. Portuguese police are perusing a “new clue and suspect” after talks with British officers, according to a bombshell local media report. The Correio da Manha newspaper claims local detectives are now “nearer to knowing what happened to Madeleine” after receiving a tip-off from a mystery foreign man who was in Algarve at the same time Maddie disappeared in 2007. The alleged tip-off has since led Portuguese police and Scotland Yard to share key information on the investigation. A source in Portugal told the Mirror: “The British were here recently, there were talks at the PJ office in the city.
Police have a new suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. “It’s all very secret but then it always is with the Madeleine case. Only the police know who the suspect is.” The face-to-face meeting between British and Portuguese police is believed to be the first since the new suspect came to light.
Madeleine was 3 when she vanished from her holiday flat at Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, while parents Kate and Gerry ate with friends nearby. The original investigation was axed in 2008 before Scotland Yard launched Operation Grange in 2013 after a Portu-
guese inquiry failed to make any headway. But despite countless leads being examined and ultimately abandoned, and no new information for quite some time, former top detective David Edgar said there were people who knew what happened to Madeleine. “The best hope of a breakthrough, even after all this time, will be if and when someone’s conscience is pricked. It may be that the person responsible for Madeleine’s kidnap is dying and makes a deathbed confession, or someone close to that person comes forward after he or she has passed away. “Or it could be that the abductor falls out with others who know and they finally decide to contact police.” The McCanns have denied any involvement in the disappearance of their daughter.
Matrix rumours grow A new Matrix movie has been a hot rumour for years but there may be some truth to the latest one. Discussing Film says it has confirmed series directors the Wachowskis are on board to direct a new film. The sisters skyrocketed to fame with The Matrix in 1999 and wrote and directed both sequels; Reloaded and Revolutions. It’s understood Zak Penn will write the screenplay, Black Panther actor Michael B Jordan will star in it and Jordan’s Outlier Society Productions and Warner Bros will produce the film. Penn wrote on May 10 that a new Matrix film was “possible” and he was excited for it.

US sanctions mean closure of diplomacy NZME Iran has slammed the Trump administration over new US sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader and other top officials, with the Foreign Ministry saying the measures spell “permanent closure” of diplomacy between Tehran and Washington. President Donald Trump enacted the new sanctions yesterday against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates. US officials also said they plan sanctions against Iranian
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi as saying that Trump’s move means the end of diplomacy between the two countries. “The fruitless sanctions on Iran’s leadership and the chief of Iranian diplomacy mean the permanent closure of the road of diplomacy with the frustrated US administration,” Mousavi said. Washington says the measures were taken to discourage
Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and supporting militant groups. This comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US over Tehran’s unravelling nuclear deal with world powers. Mousavi’s statement echoed that of Iran’s UN ambassador, Majid Takht Ravanchi, who warned that the situation in the Persian Gulf is “very dangerous” and said any talks with the US are impossible in the face of escalating sanctions and intimidation. Meanwhile, the US envoy at
the United Nations, Jonathan Cohen, said the Trump administration’s aim is to get Tehran back to negotiations. The sanctions follow Iran’s downing last week of a US surveillance drone, worth over $100 million, over the Strait of Hormuz, an attack that sharply escalated the crisis in the Persian Gulf. After the downing of the drone, Trump pulled back from the brink of retaliatory military strikes but continued his pressure campaign against Iran.

Driver charged with killing 7 bikers AP The driver of a pickup truck in a fiery collision on a rural New Hampshire highway that killed seven motorcyclists has been charged with seven counts of negligent homicide, and records show he was stopped on suspicion of drunk driving last month and in 2013. Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, was arrested at his home in Massachusetts, the New Hampshire attorney general’s office said. He was handed over to New Hampshire authorities after a brief court appearance Monday. Connecticut prosecutors say he was arrested May 11 in an East Windsor Walmart parking lot after failing a sobriety test. Officers had responded to a complaint about a man who was revving his truck engine and jumping up and down out-

A man who answered the phone at the home of Zhukovskyy’s family and would identify himself only as his brother-in-law said the family is in shock and feeling the same pain as everyone else but couldn’t say whether the driver was right or wrong. Since the accident, the brother-in-law said, Zhukovskyy had remained in his room, not eaten and talked to no one. Defense attorney Donald Frank called Friday’s crash a “tragedy” but said it’s important to let the criminal justice system play out. Zhukovskyy’s pickup truck, towing a flatbed trailer, collided with a group of 10 motorcycles
Friday on a two-lane highway in the northern New Hampshire community of Randolph, investigators said. The truck was travelling west when it struck the eastbound group of motorcycles. The victims were members or supporters of the Marine JarHeads, a New England motorcycle club that includes Marines and their spouses, and ranged in age from 42 to 62. Four were from New Hampshire, two from Massachusetts and one from Rhode Island. George Loring, a JarHeads member who lives in Hingham, Massachusetts, and was a few hundred metres from the crash, said Zhukovskyy has “got to live with it for the rest of his life”. JarHeads president Manny Ribeiro, who survived the crash, said the truck and trailer stayed attached in the crash. “It was like a whip. It just cleaned us out.”

First woman to lead Treasury By Pattrick Smellie The head of New South Wales’ training agency, TAFE, has been appointed secretary to the New Zealand Treasury. Caralee McLiesh will replace Gabriel Makhlouf, who leaves at the end of this month after eight years at the helm of the country’s principal economic policy advisor to the government. She will be the 25th secretary to the Treasury since it became a
standalone entity in 1858 and the first woman to lead the agency. Like Makhlouf and unlike most of her predecessors, she has been chosen from outside the ranks of both Treasury and the New Zealand public service. McLiesh comes to the role after a brief stint as managing director at Technical and Further Education, NSW, which employs around 17,000 people and manages a budget of A$1.8 billion. She is a “highly respected, world-class economist
with very strong fiscal, economic policy and financial management credentials,” State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes said in a statement announcing her appointment from September 16. She has held the TAFE role since last September and worked at the NSW Treasury between 2008 and 2018, where she held several deputy secretary roles, led the development of state budgets and finished there as deputy secretary for the fiscal and economic group.

Head lice, smacking, dirty nappies left unchanged and kids jumping the fence and escaping were among issues at early childcare centres flagged with the Ministry of Education last year. Complaints against ECEs jumped by nearly a third in 2018, with 430 complaints made to the Ministry of Education compared to 339 in 2017. However half of the complaints were not upheld. Much of the increase came from parents worrying about teacher-child ratios and inappropriate behaviour management, the ministry said. Carers withholding food, yelling at kids, and leaving babies in dirty nappies were some of the complaints made to the ministry. The complaints were against only a small group – just over 6 per cent of
early childcare providers. In 2017 more complaints were being made about health and safety, as well as abuse and neglect, but last year complaints in those areas had fallen, suggesting improvements by ECEs. ECE services have also been directly reporting more incidents to the ministry, including more than a dozen where kids had escaped over kindy fences, and scores who broke bones falling off play equipment. In one incident a child fell off a bike and split their tongue, and in another a child hit another on the head with a hammer. More serious incidents include parents being aggressive toward staff, teachers reportedly smacking or bruising children, and a firearms incident in an ECE carpark. “It’s important that parents and whanau can have confidence that their children are learning in a safe,

$4000. A survey of 650 landlords, conducted by the NZ Property Investors Federation, found that only 3.2 per cent of properties would not be properly insulated by July 1. NZ Property Investors Federation executive officer Andrew King said of those who are not yet compliant, many have already booked the work and are waiting for installers to become available. The insulation industry “can’t just employ a whole heap of people and then let them go,” he said. MBIE estimated in 2018 that 33 per cent of private rental properties were not compliant with RTA insulation requirements. Peter Hackshaw, acting national manager of MBIE’s Tenancy, Compliance and Investigations, says the RTA does not allow for extensions to this deadline. “Landlords have had ample time and information to get the required work done and failing to comply is not only unlawful, it also exposes tenants to potential harm by not having a home that is warm and dry enough during the winter months,” he said.

Landlords who haven’t yet had their properties insulated to meet new standards may have missed their chance before Monday’s deadline, exposing them to a $4000 penalty. Anthony Stone, general manager of Fletcher Building subsidiary Tasman Insulation, said although the company has no shortage of product, its installers have been booked out well in advance of the regulation change. Stone said the company has seen a significant increase in demand for the well-known Pink Batts product to be retrofitted in rentals. “We have sold over 50 per cent more glasswool insulation this year compared with the same time last year, and installed insulation in record numbers of houses for the past few months,” he said. For those properties that haven’t yet met the standard, there is little chance they will be able to before the deadline. The head of Auckland’s largest real estate agency says about 200 rental properties the business
manages will not be insulated in time to meet the Government’s deadline on Monday. Peter Thompson, Barfoot & Thompson managing director, has raised concern about the deadline looming and the number of non-compliant tenanted properties. “Although there’s been plenty of notice given about this, of the approximately 17,000 properties we manage, around 200 won’t be compliant by July 1,” Thompson said. The insulation sector was simply not capable of insulating all the homes in time, he said. “We’ve been waiting since last year for orders to be fulfilled and we’re still waiting. We put in orders at the end of last year and we’re still waiting for it to be done,” he said of insulation jobs for Barfoot-managed rental properties. “The biggest issue is the availability of insulation and people actually doing it,” he said. The approximately 200 uninsulated homes were spread across Auckland, Thompson said, and the value of each job was potentially thousands of dollars, he said.

Slow cook, fast food T
here’s nothing nicer at the end of a working winter day than to walk in the door and smell dinner already cooking. And that’s where crockpots or slow cookers come into their own. Just about anything can be popped in a slow cooker and left to its own devices for the day. It’s always a good idea to brown meat or chicken before popping it in the slow cooker to give a better appearance and to ensure the crispy bits that come with browning food are part of the finished dish.
Pork and prune casserole 2T olive oil 4 pork loin steaks 1/2 C dried prunes 2 to 3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 2 to 3 sticks celery, sliced 1 leek, sliced 2T plain flour 2C cider or white wine 1 vegetable stock cube 1T wholegrain mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Beef and kumara curry 1-1.5kg lean beef for casseroling 1t each salt and ground black pepper 2 onions, peeled and diced 3T Thai-style red curry paste 2t minced garlic 2 medium, orange-fleshed kumara, peeled and diced 400g can coconut milk 1 1/2 C beef stock 1-1 1/2 C frozen peas 2T chopped fresh coriander ■■ Cut the beef into 2-2.5cm pieces and season with salt and pepper. ■■ Brown the meat in a dash of oil in a hot frying pan; this is best done in 2-3 batches. ■■ With the last batch of meat, add the onions and curry paste and cook until fragrant. ■■ Put the beef mixture into the slow cooker. ■■ Add garlic, kumara, coconut milk and stock, and cover with the lid. ■■ Cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. ■■ Stir in the peas and coriander, re-cover and continue cooking on high for a further 15-20 minutes. ■■ Serve in bowls garnished with shredded coconut and accompany with steamed rice and prawn crackers.
Italian chicken stew 1.2kg mixed chicken thighs 1T olive oil 1/2 C (125ml) dry white wine 1/2 C (125ml) chicken stock 1 large brown onion 2 medium leeks, sliced 2 medium carrots, diced 2 sticks celery, diced 2 x 400g tins diced tomatoes 1T rosemary, chopped ■■ Season chicken pieces well with salt and pepper. ■■ Heat oil in a large frypan over medium heat. ■■ Brown chicken in batches and place in slow cooker. ■■ Pour wine and chicken stock into the pan and bring to the boil. Scrape down pan and pour over chicken pieces. ■■ Place vegetables, tinned tomatoes and rosemary into the slow cooker with chicken. ■■ Cover and cook for 6-8 hours on low or 4-6 hours on high. ■■ Serve with pasta or mashed potato and green vegetables.
■■ Heat the oil in a frying pan. ■■ Brown the pork loins well on both sides. ■■ Remove from pan, place in a slow cooker and scatter prunes over the top. ■■ Add carrot, celery and leek to the pan and continue to cook for a further 2 to 3 minutes. ■■ Stir in flour, then the cider or wine and stock cube. ■■ Bring to the boil, stirring until the sauce thickens and the stock cube dissolves. ■■ Stir in mustard and seasoning. ■■ Pour sauce over the meat and prunes. ■■ Put lid on slow cooker and cook 4 to 6 hours on low. ■■ Serve with mashed potato and beans.

Chicken and mushroom casserole 500g chicken breast fillets 250g button mushrooms 250g cream cheese 1 packet french onion soup mix ■■ Grease the bottom of the slow cooker then place the chicken breast fillets first, then the mushrooms. ■■ In a bowl add cream cheese and french onion soup. Mix well and then pour over the chicken and the mushrooms in the slow cooker. Cook on low for 6 and a half hours or high for 5 hours.
Rosemary lamb shanks 4 lamb shanks 2T rosemary 1 onion, sliced thinly 1C gravy powder ■■ Line the bottom of your slow cooker with the thinly sliced onion rings. ■■ Lay the lamb shanks on top – sprinkle the rosemary over the top and add the gravy mix. ■■ Cover and cook on low for about 6-8 hours stirring occasionally.
Because your slow cooker will have a tightly sealed lid, the liquid won’t evaporate so if you’re adapting a standard recipe, it’s best to reduce the liquid by roughly a third. It should just cover the meat and vegetables. Just as the liquid doesn’t reduce, it also doesn’t thicken. You can roll meat in a small amount of seasoned flour before adding it to the slow cooker or use a little cornflour at the end. If you want to do the latter, take a teaspoon or two of cornflour and mix it to a paste with a little cold water. Stir into your simmering slow cooker contents, then replace the lid.
Lemon and cumin chicken 1kg chicken thighs, skinless, boneless and cut into chunks, 3 x 7cm 1T ground cumin seeds 2t sesame oil 2t lemon pepper 4 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped Juice and zest of 1 lemon 2C pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 2-3cm chunks 1 large leek, sliced 1C courgettes, cut into 1cm-sized pieces 1C button mushrooms 1C celery, sliced 1T fresh thyme 1C chicken stock 2T white wine 3 1/2 T Bisto light brown gravy mix 1T cumin seeds ■■ Mix the first seven ingredients together and marinate for 15 minutes a bowl. ■■ Place the vegetables in the order given into the slow cooker. Place the chicken and the marinade on top. ■■ Add the thyme, stock and white wine. ■■ Season, place lid on slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours. ■■ After six hours place 1/2 C liquid from slow cooker in a small bowl and mix in Bisto and cumin. ■■ Combine this to make a paste, add to casserole, mix thoroughly. ■■ Cook on high for 15 minutes. Serve accompanied with hearty hunks of crusty bread.

Captain Kane, you’ve done it again W
hen you think about a sporting moment a few days after it actually happened and it still brings a big smile to your face, you know it was pretty special. On Sunday morning, I didn’t complain about my kids getting up early at the weekend for once. Instead, I joined them. After all, there was some cricket on and I had no idea what had happened on the field during the night but I was hoping that it would still be going and there’d still be plenty of action to come. I wasn’t disappointed. The Black Caps and the West Indies were fighting it out in what turned out to be an absolute thriller on the other side of the world. The Windies were looking at 292 for the win after the Black Caps’ captain fantastic Kane Williamson’s man-of-the-match knock of 148 and around the time that I tuned in Trent Boult had just taken a couple of wickets in an over to have the Windies in a bit of strife, seven down. But Carlos Brathwaite set about extinguishing any thoughts of an easy Black Caps win, to set up one of the most dramatic finishes in the tournament so far. When Brathwaite sent what turned out to be the final ball of the match high into the sky, those of us watching through the wonders of television probably thought that it was headed over the boundary to give the Windies

the win. After a heroic effort in which he scored a century and put his side into a match-winning position, Brathwaite looked like he’d finished it off with a six when they needed just five runs to win. But, it turned out Boult was on the boundary and took what was a match-winning catch, in a finish which had me up out of the chair, jumping around the lounge woo-hooing in my dressing gown. And I reckon I probably wasn’t the only one. There were two things that struck me about that game. One was the fact that in a day and age where scores well in excess of 300 are commonplace, so often it is the not-so-high-scoring games that are the most entertaining. They are the ones that more often than not go down to the wire, whereas the 300-plus ones – while definitely entertaining in the first innings – are often decided with plenty of overs to go when the run chase becomes almost a mathematical impossibility, taking the excitement out of it. But probably the biggest thing
to come from that game was the sportsmanship shown by Black Caps captain Kane Williamson and his men. Brathwaite dropped to his knees after Boult took that catch, and the picture that will stick in many minds from that game won’t be of the New Zealanders jumping around high-fiving each other, it’ll be the one of Brathwaite on his knees being
consoled by captain Kane and his merry men. It’s a picture that I couldn’t quite imagine featuring the likes of those Australian blokes Steve Smith or David Warner during their playing careers and one that made me so super proud to be a Kiwi. And tonight, the Black Caps will be back on the field, where they will hopefully further ce-
ment their position as the team to beat, with a win over Pakistan. Heading into the seventh matches of the tournament, we are the only unbeaten team, and it’s a pretty awesome feeling. While we don’t want to go getting too far ahead of ourselves, a chance to turn around that devastating loss to Australia in the 2015 final looks like it’s well and truly on the cards.

Unlikely Bangladesh keep semi-finals hopes alive NZME Shakib Al Hasan showed why he’s the top-ranked all-rounder in one-day international cricket by scoring a half-century and then taking a five-wicket haul to steer Bangladesh to a 62-run World Cup win over Afghanistan. Shakib moved atop the tournament scoring list with 51 to take his tally to 476 runs, then took 5-29 to lift his tournament wicket tally to 10. The 32-year-old left-hander is the only player other than India’s Yuvraj Singh, who took 5-31 and posted an unbeaten 50 against Ireland at Bangalore in 2011, to achieve the all-rounder double in a World Cup game. Yuvraj was voted player of the World Cup in 2011, when India won the title on home soil. “I think the five wickets. It was important,” Shakib responded when asked for his match highlight. “Having said that, I had to work really hard for my 50 runs.” He said he’s never been better prepared for a major tournament, so his performances are “a combination of hard work and luck”.
Bangladesh are still in the hunt at the Cricket World Cup. Shakib was involved from the fifth over yesterday, going to the crease at the fall of Bangladesh’s first wicket. He went on to post his sixth consecutive 40-plus score at the
World Cup – he has two centuries – and he was the second-highest contributor to Bangladesh’s total of 262-7 against Afghanistan after Mushfiqur Rahim’s 83. Taking wickets in three differ-
ent spells, Shakib was the key contributor with the ball as Afghanistan was dismissed for 200, its seventh straight loss in the tournament. Bangladesh moved to fifth place on the standings with seven points, just one behind topranked England and four behind tournament-leading New Zealand. Afghanistan was doing OK in its run chase until Shakib was given the ball in the 11th over to introduce his left-arm orthodox spin. The bowling change worked immediately, with Shakib having Rahmat Shah (24) caught at mid-wicket to end a 49-run opening stand. Mosaddek Hossain had Hashmatullah Shahidi stumped by Mushfiqur to make it 79-2 in the 21st before Afghan skipper Gulbadin Naib and former captain Asghar Afghan combined in a bid to consolidate the innings. Shakib struck twice in three balls in the 29th over, having Naib (47) caught at short cover and then bowling Mohammad Nabi (0). He returned to dismiss Afghan for 20 in the 33rd over in a five-over spell that netted three
wickets for eight runs and virtually ended Afghanistan’s chances of victory. And he sealed the five-wicket haul in his last over when he had Najibullah Zadran stumped for 23 as Afghanistan’s last four wickets fell for 12 runs, leaving Samiullah Shinwari stranded on 49 not out. Afghanistan entered the game on a high after restricting India to 224-8 on the same pitch two days before and getting within 11 runs of what would have been one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history. That prompted skipper Naib to field first after winning the toss and try to keep the chase as low as possible. It didn’t quite work out, leaving Afghanistan a target bigger than it has ever successfully chased against Bangladesh. Mujeeb Ur Rahman took three wickets, including the key dismissal of Shakib in the middle, to return 3-39 from 10 overs and was the pick of Afghanistan’s bowling attack. Naib picked up 2-56 but star spinner Rashid Khan had another difficult day, with his 10 overs returning 0-52.

Singh off to Bayern Munich NZME Rising Kiwi star Sarpreet Singh is reportedly set to sign with Bayern Munich in what would be one of the most stunning transfers in New Zealand football history. German newspaper Bild is reporting that Singh is already in Munich ahead of formally signing, with Bayern wanting to keep his arrival a secret. The report suggests that Singh would be signed to initially play for their reserve team, Bayern Munich II, who are set to play in the third division of German football next season. However, it is also noted that the 20-year-old has been signed with an eye to him eventually becoming a member of their first team. Singh, who is currently under contract at the Wellington Phoenix and impressed playing for New Zealand at the Under-20 World Cup earlier this month, is set to sign a multi-year deal with the German champions, according to the report.
Such a move would be a shock, as while Singh is one of New Zealand’s brightest footballing talents, linking up with a squad like Bayern was surely not on the radar of even the most optimistic Singh supporters. As recently as January last year, Singh was still turning out for the Phoenix reserves, with occasional first-team game time off the bench. He then turned heads on his first A-League start (February 17, 2018) with a thumping goal against Perth Glory and was one of the few bright spots of an otherwise dismal 2017-18 campaign. Singh then went to a new level in the most recent Phoenix season and is the most exciting home-grown prospect in the A-League since Marco Rojas in 2010. He scored five goals and provided seven assists during the campaign, and received some high praise, including from former Manchester United and Chelsea keeper Mark Bosnich.

Wolves run rampant over a depleted Mid Canty side A Mid Canterbury men’s basketball team depleted by sickness headed to Christchurch on Sunday to take on the Big Cat Wolves and came home with a 65-41 loss. The Tricroft Mid Canterbury side only just managed to pull together seven players for the latest round of the Canterbury men’s division one competition, with the help of ring-in Peter Kirwan, and against the odds had the better start of the two sides. Mid Canterbury managed to slip out to a 15-9 lead halfway through the first quarter, but Wolves stayed close and by the end of the first quarter it was 17-14 to Mid Canterbury. A poor start to the second quarter by the green and golds proved costly, with the Wolves pouncing and taking a 23-19 lead, before a couple of steals put the teams back on an even footing, at 23-all. A couple of late goals in the quarter saw the Big Cat Wolves out to a 29–23 lead at halftime. The third quarter proved to be problematic for the Ashburton side. Their shots would not drop and they began to turn the ball over, trying to force the ball inside, coach Brian Kerr said. On the back of that, Big Cat Wolves were able to break and picked up some easy baskets, forcing the ball inside which helped them race out to a big lead, 41–25. Mid Canterbury managed to fight their way back to 10 points, but Big Cat Wolves
led 46-33 heading into the fourth. Kerr said Mid Canterbury’s shooting woes continued into the fourth quarter and although they kept fighting, they were unable to close the gap, with Big Cat Wolves finishing strongly to take out the match 65–41. Kerr said the issues were varied for Mid Canterbury. “Seven players is always tough, however when one is your coach, it’s never ideal,” Kerr said. “Initially it appeared that the offensive structure was the problem and at times it was a little stagnant, however shooting 17–74 at a 23 per cent conversion rate is not going to win you games.” Compare that to Big Cat Wolves at 41 per cent and the difference was clear, he said. The taller Big Cat Wolves were able to play a more compact zone defence, generally shutting Mid Canterbury out of opportunities for rebounds, too. “The other offensive aspect is that speed is a key for us and in this game it never really clicked into gear,” Kerr said. For Mid Canterbury it was once again Pip Johnston leading the way with a hard-earned 20 points. Next up for Mid Canterbury is a game against the Pioneer Knights in Christchurch this coming Sunday. So far, in their comeback season in the Christchurch competition, Mid Canterbury has won four and lost four and are currently sixth on the table out of 12 teams.

Silver Ferns back Folau NZME The Silver Ferns are backing their star shooter Maria Folau as she weathers the storm created by her husband Israel. Ahead of the Silver Ferns’ three-game netball series in Auckland this week, Folau has been criticised for her decision to endorse her husband’s crowd funding efforts in his legal fight against Rugby Australia. Despite the backlash, Silver Ferns assistant coach Debbie Fuller says the most important thing for the team is to fully support Folau during her “tough time”. “It’s a really complex issue for a start. It is something that we’ve been very well aware of. Our first port of call of course is to care for
Maria,” Fuller said. “She’s been a wonderful servant for netball for many years and she’s held the shooting end of the Silver Ferns for many years and performed under massive pressure and won Commonwealth Games gold medals and things like that. So she’s been a very highly valued member. “Our first thought is to care for her over and above anything else because that’s the most useful thing we can do at the moment. She’s here to do a job, we’re here to do a job and we’ve got to get on with it.” Australian netball legend Liz Ellis was among the most vocal critics of Folau, who is contracted to the Adelaide Thunderbirds, and especially of Netball Australia’s response to the issue

Antetokounmpo NBA MVP The Milwaukee Bucks may have fallen two games short of the NBA finals, but they won big at the NBA awards. A tearful Giannis Antetokounmpo earned Most Valuable Player honours and Mike Budenholzer won Coach of the Year yesterday in Santa Monica. Antetokounmpo, a 24-yearold forward from Greece, beat out Paul George of Oklahoma City and James Harden of Houston, who won last year. Antetokounmpo averaged 27.7 points and 12.5 rebounds while earning All-NBA firstteam honours this season, his sixth with the Bucks. He led the franchise to the best record in the regular season and the Bucks reached the Eastern
Conference finals. Tears rolled down his cheeks as Antetokounmpo thanked his mother and brothers who were in the audience at Barker Hanger. He credited his late father for pushing him toward his goals. Budenholzer also got choked up while thanking his family after his second coaching honour. He guided the Bucks to a 6022 record in the regular season, leading them to the Eastern Conference finals, where they lost to Toronto. Budenholzer also coached Team Giannis in the All-Star Game last season. He beat out Denver’s Mike Malone and Doc Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The race to the finish line is shaping up to be a cracker in the Mid Canterbury Rugby senior B competition. With five rounds of the Centennial Mug second round competition now completed, Methven and Collegiate are joint at the top of the table with four wins to their names, while Rakaia has dropped to third. That is due to Southern handing them their first loss of the season on Saturday, and it was a big one, 48-19. Rakaia won the first round and claimed the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy, and are still on top of a combined points table taking both the first and second round into consideration, but they have now slipped to third on the round two Centennial Mug table with just a bonus point preventing it from being a three-way tie at the top. Methven’s latest win to keep them up the top came against Allenton on Saturday, 41-29, while Collegiate’s came against Mt Somers, 27-22. Celtic picked up easy points with the other game. They were due to play Hampstead, but Hampstead had been forced to withdraw from the competition due to the number of games they’d defaulted this season. This weekend’s action will see Methven take on Rakaia in what is likely to be a top match between two top contenders, while Collegiate will play Allenton and Celtic will host Mt Somers, with Southern having the bye created by Hampstead’s departure. In other results on Saturday, the Celtic women finished their inaugural season in the Canterbury Metro premiership competition with a big loss, 96-0 to Marist Albion in Christchurch.

Emotional return NZ Racing Desk You can’t blame Cambridge dairy farmer Allan Hayward for his heart-felt emotion when discussing his aptly named warhorse Battle Time’s return to top form. Hayward was on cloud nine after the Group Two winner broke through for his first win in two years when comfortably winning the Seeka Premier (1200m) at Tauranga on Saturday. That thrill was also felt by co-trainer Margaret Carter, who has shared Hayward’s perseverance and faith in the six-year-old son of Battle Paint. “It was like winning a Group race to us,” Carter said. “It was fantastic to see him win again and I’m stoked for Allan. He’s the owner who has been paying the bills all the way through and he’s had so much faith in the horse.” Carter and her husband, Tim, train a team of about a dozen horses and, being a smaller stable, she said each one is treated like one of the family. “They’re like my own horses. That’s how I treat them,” she said. “That’s why it means so much to see Battle Time win again after all the problems he has had.” A Group One runner-up as a two and three-year-old, Battle Time was diagnosed with a bone chip in a knee after his second behind Xtravagant in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton. The faith of Hayward and the Carters was then called upon big time in a bid to get him back to top form. Finally two years and nine starts later that day came at Tauranga on Saturday. “He was his old self,” Hayward said. “He was never going to stop. It was such a thrill to see him win like that. “I know Margaret (Carter) got as much of a thrill as me from the win. She has put a lot of work into him.

Men’s game to get time in the sun NZME It is a sport that has been bubbling away under the surface for many years – now men’s netball is going to get some time in the sun. Leading the charge for the men will be ... a woman. Invercargill marketing manager Angee Shand has been involved in men’s netball for many years and will be sideline with the national men’s team when it lines up against the Silver Ferns later this week. The inclusion of a men’s invitational team to contest the series which features the Silver Ferns, All Stars and Fiji provides a valuable opportunity for the players to showcase their talent and passion for the sport. For Shand, whose involvement with the men’s side of the code now spans more than two decades, it is a milestone to celebrate. “For the men to have the opportunity to compete on the international stage is fantastic and testament to how netball continues to evolve,” she said. “These guys are incredibly passionate about netball and their skills are unbelievable. I’m really proud everyone will finally get to see that during the series and hopefully this will be the first of many at this elite level.”
The games will be played in Auckland from tonight until the finals on Saturday. Height is a growing factor in the international game and the men’s team has six players over 1.9m, including towering Auckland-born shooter Junior Levi who stands at 2.18m and fellow goal-scorer Daniel Jefferies at 2m. Shand has worked as manager for the open and under-23 national men’s teams. “I get to work with some incredibly talented netball players, who just happen to be male. They are outstanding athletes.” The Netball South zone board member and former Southern Steel team manager has an impressive resume. Since 2008, she has dedicated nine years to the New Zealand Men’s and Mixed Netball Association board. Shand managed the Southland men’s team from 1998-2016 and has been president of the association since 2015 – an organisation she played an integral part in creating. “It’s nice to be able to represent Southland on this prestigious occasion. I’ll be wearing my star-shaped earrings on the bench which were a gift from the Southland men’s team and also symbolise my club team, the All Stars. The St Mary’s club life member is often recruited as a statistician for Sky Sport’s ANZ Premiership coverage.

Key elements of the role include: strategic planning; inter-agency working and collaborating; project planning and delivery; group facilitation, training, awareness and communications. Mid Canterbury Combined trailed at halftime by 22-3, and actually gave St Andrew’s a bit of a fright, forcing them to bring some of their bigger players off the bench which meant the Mid Canterbury Combined scrum all of a sudden found itself going backwards in the second half. “It came down to a classic case
of good big kids beat good little kids,” Middleton said. Unfortunately Combined’s good run with few injuries also came to an end, with hooker Christian Thompson suffering a season-ending ankle injury, replacement hooker Hamish Kerr breaking his collarbone, and Sam Ree getting knocked out.
