Tyre plan a win for environment BY SUE NEWMAN

A new government initiative to deal with the millions of waste tyres generated each year in New Zealand has been applauded by Ashburton’s recycling expert Craig Goodwin. The Ashburton District Council waste recovery manager described the initiative to use old tyres as a heat source to make cement as a great solution to what he says has been a significant environmental issue. “It’s a pretty uncontrolled thing at the moment. They’re often stockpiled
on properties and left sitting there for years.” While there was a scheme running where tyre retailers paid to have their old tyres collected there was no onshore end use for those tyres. They were generally shipped overseas, he said. “Having an on-shore solution is something people in the waste industry have been wanting for a very long time. This plan is a very good first step. The rules are so lax at the moment they can end up anywhere, there’s been a lack of oversight around the whole thing.” Off-loading old tyres at the resource
recovery park comes at a cost and that meant few were officially dumped, but there was plenty of evidence around the district of tyres being tossed into pits or in riverbeds, Goodwin said. Under the new scheme tyres will be collected and used as a heat source in the manufacture of cement, rather than using coal. This solution has a double benefit – it utilises a waste product and it will reduce carbon emissions.
