Motorists have been caught travelling at speeds of up to 140km/h in thick fog, on one of Mid Canterbury’s most notorious roads for speeding.

According to police, aside from State Highways 1 (around 3000 tickets) and 77 (around 1500 tickets), Thompsons Track is the place where officers issue the most speeding tickets in Mid Canterbury, with around 900 issued since January 2012.

Three of the most recent speeding tickets on Thompsons Track were issued by one officer on a foggy day. That highway patrol officer caught motorists travelling at speeds of 127km/h, 132km/h and 140km/h in thick fog with visibility at just 50 metres.

“That’s at the high end of stupidity,” Canterbury Police acting road policing manager Phil Newton said.

The officer who issued those tickets, had just days earlier witnessed a horrific triple fatality on Thompsons Track.

That officer was one of two targeting speeding motorists there when a car travelled through a stop sign at the Somerton Road intersection and hit a car on Thompsons Track, killing Sally Summerfield, 49, her daughter Ella Summerfield, 12, and her friend Abigail Hone, also 12. The two officers were stopped nearby when the tragedy unfolded.

“One of them looked up and saw it happen and the other one saw it straight afterwards,” Mr Newton said.

crash, Mr Newton said Thompsons Track was well known by police as a place where motorists pushed the limits.

He said many drivers had a perception that they were unlikely to be apprehended for speeding there.

“On the state highways they see the risk (of getting caught) as being a lot higher, but that’s not the case,” Mr Newton said.

“Traditionally Thompsons Track has had some really high speeds on it, but the problem with all Mid Canterbury highways and arterial roads is they are long, flat stretches with intersections on them, so you can get lulled into a false sense of security.”

Pitt suffered burns to almost 65 per cent of her body when she was caught in a bushfire while running an ultra-marathon in Western Australia in 2011. Queen tours Game of Thrones set

The Lady Liverpool foundation was one of many women’s patriotic committees support troops during World War One, and Ashburton women were quick to rise to the call, as reported on June 26, 1916.

The ladies in charge of the Lady Liverpool depot in the Arcade experienced a busy and profitable day yesterday, when over £10 worth of goods was disposed of. Fifty rabbits were sent to the depot, and were readily sold at 1 shilling each or 1s 6p per pair.

Queen Elizabeth II and husband Prince Philip have visited the set of hit TV show Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland – receiving a replica of the throne to crown her visit. During the set tour in Belfast, the monarch was presented with a miniature Iron Throne, the massive black, snarled mesh of melted swords fought over by rival families in the global hit HBO series. She also met actors from the show including Maisie Williams, 17, who plays Arya Stark and 18-year-old Sophie Turner, who stars as her sister Sansa. It is not known whether the Queen is a Game of Thrones fan but her youngest son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are reportedly avid viewers.

Drexel University professor Frank Lee has earned the Guinness World Record for largest architectural video game display (left). Again. Lee and two colleagues created a computer program to play the classic shape-fitting puzzle on two sides of a 29-storey skyscraper in Philadelphia. They used hundreds of lights embedded in the glass facades of the Cira Centre. All told, the “screens” totalled nearly 11,000 square metres.

Dozens of Tetris enthusiasts played the supersized version in April using a joystick from about 2km away. The record announced yesterday beat the previous one also set by Lee. Last year, he recreated the classic Atari game Pong on a side of the same building.

Napier couple Chris and Lorraine Hayne offered $500 for the return of a missing caravan, which they bought after their first washed out to sea in a flood. They enjoyed two summers in the 7.6m vehicle at Kairakau Beach Camp but in May it disappeared from a private camping ground, where it was being stored for the winter. On Monday night, as Mr Hayne searched for a replacement on Trade Me, he found a promising option in Masterton – though at $10,000 it cost more than they wanted to pay. “Pretty much as soon as I clicked on the images, I knew it was ours,” he told Hawke’s Bay Today. “I didn’t expect it at all. We contacted police in Masterton who didn’t seem that interested, so I drove there and went around with police to seize it.”

Ashburton deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker said a nearby burn-off of hedge trimmings caused the fire, when ash and embers were blown into the hedge.

Although no penalty is likely to be imposed on Silver Fern Farms, Mr Baker said it was vital the weather forecast was taken into account before carrying out burn-offs.

A Silver Fern Farms spokesperson said the company had a work permit to conduct the burn-off, and when the fire was lit at 8am Monday it was frosty with no wind and the forecast was for “excellent” conditions.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said the skifield fared well with no reported damage, but was forced to close due to the high winds which fell short of the mountain’s record wind gust of 251.9km/h last year.

However, Mr McKenzie noted rain had affected some of the trails.

“They will have to go back up and do a bit of aKINpatch up G SINGLE job,” he said.

Wild wind gusts of up to 200km/h forced Mt Hutt skifield to close yesterday, while the district’s firefighters battled a large hedge fire for almost three hours.

Mid Canterbury was battered by the north-westerly winds early yesterday which exceeded 80km/h in Ashburton and saw winds on Mt Hutt reach 150km/h, gusting up to 200km/h.

MetService communications meteorologist John Law said wind gusts peaked in Ashburton about 4am yesterday, and the district was unusually warm at 6am with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius.

The severe gales tapered off during the day, but not before playing a role in a vegetation fire at Silver Fern Farms on Company Road about 3.30am which prompted three tankers and two trucks into action from the Ashburton and Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigades and the Pendarves and Ashburton Rural Fire Forces.

Firefighters fought a blazing 50 metre stretch of hedge that was being fanned by the winds, before returning about 6.30am.

Age not an issue for local firefighters

There is no compulsory retirement age for firefighters. As long as they continue to pass a physical competency test and medical checks, as long as they can and want to do the job, they can carry on, Mr Baker said.

Bill Clark admits to being 76, but when the fire alarm sounds, he drops what he’s doing and heads to the fire station. He has no intention of handing in his pager yet.

“I enjoy the friendship and the camaraderie. You never know where you’re going until you get to the station and I’ll carry on as long as I can or until the boss tells me I’m not fit,” he said.

His firefighting career started in Tekapo, where he was a founding brigade member back in 1974.

Ask Bill Clark. He’s on the shady side of 70, has been fighting fires since 1974 and plans to fight fires for a few more years yet.

He’s an extreme example of the profile of today’s professional – and volunteer – firefighters.

Men (generally) who are 50 plus.

And that is ringing alarm bells for the New Zealand Fire Service.

It’s concerned its fire crews have an average age of 46, with one in 20 over 65. And that ageing population means the service will eventually look at a mass exodus of decades of experience.

The average age of Ashburton’s volunteers is likely to be quite a bit higher, but no one is really counting, says deputy chief fire officer Graeme Baker.

“Our average age is probably in the 50s and we’ve got a guy

And that waiting game for potential volunteers continues today as, unlike many volunteer brigades, Ashburton is flush with crew members. It always runs a full complement of 30 and always has a waiting list, Mr Baker said.

Ashburton is one of the country’s busier volunteer brigades, with call-outs exceeding 400 a year.

Even with that high call rate it continues to respond with full crews to those calls, he said.

Many of Ashburton’s volunteers are second generation firefighters and often more than one member of a family is part of the team. The firefighting load is also shared by the district’s employers.

“We couldn’t do what we do though without the employers who’re happy to let people go and some work places have more than one firefighter on their staff,” Mr Baker said.

Another deficit looms

ian this week the polytechnic had forecasted 932 equivalent full time students (EFTS) for 2014, 156 fewer than what was budgeted for the year.

Concerns have been raised over its financial position, as the organisation looks to have an operating deficit of $1.9 million on top of last year’s deficit of $3.1m. In 2012 it broke even after a projected deficit of $1.6m, but that was due to reduced depreciation charges and the postponement of some planned capital expenditure, while in 2011 it had a deficit of $1.6m.

Aoraki Polytechnic is forecasting 14 per cent fewer students than first thought and is staring down the barrel of another operating deficit – this time of $1.9 million.

However, polytechnic chief executive Alex Cabrera says the Ashburton campus can expect further investment as the tertiary institution hopes to cash in on its fastest growing district and the wealth of trade and farming opportunities.

A reduction in non-core activities such as those carried out by sub-contractors has seen 264 fewer full time student positions compared with 2013, while it also recently announced 30 redundancies across its campuses.

Despite the figures, Mr Cabrera remained positive about the future as the polytechnic moves to target areas where students are likely to walk into jobs, however a “buoyant” employment market was reducing appetite for tertiary study.

“It is anticipated that the primary industry portfolio will

grow from 45 EFTS in 2013 to 108 EFTS in 2014 and trades from 59 in 2013 to 90 in 2014.

“We are also exploring more flexible delivery options such as online, weekend and evening courses to attract people currently employed.” “(The) Aoraki balance sheet remains strong. While we are presently not profitable on a month-by-month basis, we are fortunate to have reserves that enable us to invest in future developments. We are forecasting a small deficit for 2015 and a return to surplus in 2016.”

Snack Sacks a bid to reduce school rubbish

A bunch of St Joseph’s School pupils are tackling a litter problem at their school.

Nine-year-old Charlotte Clifford has help spearhead the school’s Enviro Team to create Snack Sacks which pupils use to wrap their sandwiches, biscuits and other lunch time treats in place of cling film.

“They are made out of found material brought from home to stop rubbish because our school had a bit of a problem with rubbish being littered around,” Charlotte said.

With the help of two parents, the team has managed to sew up 72 sacks which are sold for $5 each, but they have got a long list of 60 orders ahead of them before they are finished as they become the latest craze at the school.

They are made of cotton with a plastic lining and held together with Velcro.

A trial date has been set for a Rotorua woman who is accused of multiple Serious Fraud Office charges. Linnet Lewis, 54, appeared in the High Court of Rotorua before Justice Timothy Brewer via video link yesterday.

She will stand trial on May 4 next year. Lewis has denied 26 Serious Fraud Office charges including 16 counts of withdrawing money from investor accounts. She also faces five charges of dishonestly using cheques and five of making false invoices with the intent to use them to obtain property. Lewis’ bail was to continue.

A bus driver and 10 children have been taken to Hawera Hospital for precautionary checkups after a school bus and a car collided in south Taranaki yesterday afternoon. The crash occurred at 2.50pm at the intersection of Neill and Palmer Roads near Kaponga.

Around 25 school children from two local primary schools were on the bus. Police said school staff were quickly on the scene to help contact parents of the children who were taken to hospital, and to take care of those who remained at the scene. An adult and a child who were in the car were unharmed.

Seven people were injured in a crash in rural Canterbury last night.

Two cars collided on WinchesterGeraldine Rd south of Geraldine, and police, the Fire Service and ambulances attended. Seven people were involved in the crash and injuries were thought to be serious, a spokesman from southern police communications said.

The partner of slain Rawene woman Barbara Ann Moka will go on trial in November. Matiu Wirihana Korewha, 43, will appear in the High Court at Whangarei for a callover on August 14. A pre-trial hearing was held in the High Court last week. His trial is scheduled to start on November 24. Ms Moka’s body was found in bush about 800m up a farm road from Omanaia’s Te Piiti Marae, where she was last seen.

Mid Cantabrians’ future health needs will be among those met as Christchurch and Burwood hospitals’ redevelopment continues with the first major concrete pour at Burwood’s new back of house building.

Canterbury District Health Board chief executive David Meates said a total of 700m3 of concrete was poured for the foundation for the Burwood site.

“This building is designed

to house the kitchens; cleaners’ offices; bike stands; staff amenities such as showers and toilets; the supply and distribution centre; mail room and courier collection/ drop off; clean and dirty loading bays; IT services; and plant rooms to support the rest of the new build,” he said.

The structural design of the new building required a raft foundation of concrete and steel that allowed the load to spread over a large area.

“The raft also reduces the

effect of lateral spreading in the event of an earthquake.”

Contractors Leighs Cockram JV have had to weave together the reinforcing steel for the first concrete pour, a labour intensive and time consuming process.

Mr Meates said by the time Burwood’s three ward blocks and back of house building were complete contractors would have worked with more than 18,000 tonnes of structural steel, 229 precast concrete columns and approximately 15,000m3 of concrete.

The building would be built to IL 3 specifications, which meant it would be 30 per cent stronger than standard buildings.

At Christchurch Hospital the development of an Acute Services Building at Christchurch Hospital was due to start in September and be finished by 2018.

Mr Meates says the Burwood and Christchurch hospitals’ redevelopment was essential in ensuring the recovery of Canterbury health facilities following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

Local schools on right track

Close monitoring of social media sites, strong bully reporting systems and encouraging bystanders to take action are all helping to address bullying in Mid Canterbury schools.

These steps show the district’s schools are on the right track as they align with new Ministry of Education guidelines released this week to prevent bullying in schools.

The document was put to-

gether by an advisory group which included police and cyber-safety organisation NetSafe.

One of the most interesting suggestions is for schools to use surveillance to monitor bullying, while other advice includes highlighting the role of bystanders in bullying situations, and how to establish “safe telling” systems.

Think First project co-ordinator John Hobbs, who is working to reduce bullying in Mid

Canterbury, said schools should “try absolutely anything”, including video cameras, to ensure pupil safety.

Mr Hobbs said the majority of the district’s schools had a bully form system, where pupils can report on paper what has occurred.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said the guidelines gave the school a chance to measure itself and identify where it needed to improve.

He said the school had the

bully form system in place, as well as 22 youth advocates and an initiative which is targeted at positive behaviour, while the school has also dealt with harassment on social media.

The college did not use cameras to monitor bullying, and he questioned their merit, saying pupils should be taking responsibility for their actions instead of having to be deterred, however he noted they may be helpful in complex physical or verbal bullying cases.

Local rider Maddie Crowe is philosophical about her first international competition in Melbourne this month.

The four-rider contingent took on their Australian counterparts in the Oceania Young Rider Championships, in a three-day event.

While Crowe’s seasoned thoroughbred gelding Brogan performed well in the crosscountry and show jumping phases, his dressage mark let the pair down.

“He jumped really well, but I was disappointed with my overall performance – he wasn’t settled in the dressage, which is unusual – it’s normally his strong point,” Crowe said.

However, two of her teammates didn’t fare as well.

“Things just didn’t go our way,” Crowe said.

“On a good day we would have been very competitive with the Australian team, but

nothing went to plan for us and everything went to plan for the Aussies.

“I won the last event I had in New Zealand before we left, all the prep was totally correct and it all came off, whereas in Melbourne nothing really went the way it should have.”

Despite the knock back, Crowe said the experience was invaluable.

“It was really cool – I wish we had more of the same team atmosphere we had in Australia; the support was great, and you don’t usually get that because it’s such an individual sport.”

Police target ski area roads

Roads that lead to ski areas are the focus of the latest police operation geared towards keeping Canterbury’s roads safe this winter.

Canterbury’s most recent fatalities both occurred on roads frequently used by motorists heading for a day’s skiing at Mt Hutt.

Three people died in a crash on Thompsons Track on May 31, and police yesterday named Christchurch man Kevin James Davies, 53, as the person who died in a crash on Bealey Road, near Darfield, on Tuesday.

Canterbury’s acting road policing manager Phil Newton said both Thompsons Track and Bealey Road were frequently used by skiers and snowboarders headed to Mt Hutt – roads that get a lot busier at this time of the year, and a lot more dangerous.

Black ice is being blamed for Tuesday’s fatality and police are warning all motorists to be aware of the possibility of ice on roads in shaded areas on all roads around Canterbury during the winter months.

Figures released this week show that there have been 26 crashes on roads in the Ashburton District between 2008 and 2013, relating to frost or black ice on the roads.

Thompsons Track – one of the worst roads in Mid Canterbury for speeding according to the number of speeding tickets issued by officers – is also one of the district’s worst for ice between June and August.

And that could be a deadly combination, Mr Newton said.

The district’s worst roads for black ice are Thompsons Track, Ashburton Gorge Road, Tramway Road, Hinds Arundel Road, Line Road, Methven Chertsey Road and Seafield Road.

Flu decimates staff numbers

Cold and flu bugs are carving swathes through Ashburton workplaces this winter.

Subway Ashburton owner Tony Corbett said unaffected staff had had to fill in for their sick colleagues.

Absenteeism was continuing this week, and colds and flu had so far affected altogether about a quarter of his staff of 25 over the past two weeks.

He hoped this week would see the end of it, and was wondering if he should have carried through funding flu injections for his staff, a proposal in which about half of his staff had been interested in.

“I wish to hell I had of now,” Mr Corbett said.

“We have had a lot of it (sickness), it’s just winter blues.”

Paper Plus owner Terry McNab said one of his staff who had had a flu injection had been laid low by flu symp-

toms regardless, however she was back at work now. He himself had been sick over three weeks ago.

He had then recovered, before the illness came back “big time”, necessitating him to take half a day off work.

“I was coughing all over the place,” he said.

His strategy had been to “take a couple of Panadols and move on”, although he believed it had been a “bad flu year” generally as he had heard through customers of people being hospitalised with breathing difficulties.

Mitre 10 Mega assistant manager Bruce Corah said absenteeism had been low at the store this winter, something he put down to the company being proactive with providing hand sanitiser in the workplace, as well as a high uptake of free flu injections by staff.

There were up to 80 staff at the store on any given day each winter, and there had generally been only from zero to two people off per day.

Newcomers’ Network members will host a Philippine-themed evening tomorrow night for their settling-in meeting.

On the menu is adobo chicken, lumpia (spring rolls) and kanin (steamed rice).

There will be music and dancing.

The family fun entertainment was open to anyone to attend. It was free entry.

Newcomers’ Network administrator John Hobbs said a different country themed meeting was held each month.

All the events were open to any people new to the district.

The settling-in evenings showcased different cultures and the traditions of those countries now represented by peo-

ple who lived in Mid Canterbury.

“Over the years Mid Canterbury has become more culturally diverse,” Mr Hobbs said.

During the evening a presentation was often given about the country, its culture and costumes. And then there were samples of traditional food.

There would also be a traditional costume parade.

“Anyone can attend and try some of the food, be taught one of the dances or sing along. It’s just a free family night out,” Mr Hobbs said.

He encouraged people attending to wear bright colours.

The meeting will be held at the Hockey Pavilion, Walnut Ave on Friday from 7pm.

The event, presented by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), has been tailored to 2-6 year olds.

The concert is a chance for children to listen and sing to live music, dance and talk to musicians.

CSO marketing manager Michelle Walsh noted the concert could present itself as a chance for children to experience their first concert.

“Some may be able to even conduct,” she said.

The 45 minute show will provide children a chance to experience their favourite nursery rhymes, played by a real, live orchestra.

Ms Walsh said keeping the children captivated and involved was vital.

“Getting involved is recommended,” she said.

Towards the end, children will get the chance to walk around and interact with the orchestra whilst they play.

The CSO will be playing on July 19 at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Stabbing victim still critical

Interviews with children who may have witnessed a stabbing at a small Christian school may take several more days, as the victim remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Specialist interviewers spoke with some of the children at Pacific Christian School in Auckland yesterday, after scissors were used in the schoolyard stabbing of an 11-year-old boy.

A meeting for staff, children and parents was held at the school in Mangere yesterday afternoon.

Parents parked close to the

school hall and came in to hear about the police investigation in to a fight that left an 11-yearold boy fighting for his life after being stabbed with scissors.

Police and Victim Support were supporting the injured boy’s family. He was listed as being in a critical condition in Starship Hospital last night.

Police were also working with Child Youth and Family (CYF) over another 11-year-old boy who was believed to be involved in the incident. They were not seeking anyone else.

The child’s parents were cooperating fully with police and CYF to manage his care.

School manager Lisita Paongo said the meeting with parents and students yesterday afternoon was her “main concern” and that she would not be speaking with media. She said she would release a statement to media “in due time”.

Parents leaving the afterschool meeting would not comment to media waiting outside.

A spokesman for Ministry of Social Development said CYF’s focus in the wake of the incident was to ensure children and family had appropriate support.

“It is standard procedure for us to work with Police and the Ministry of Education when in-

cidents occur involving children and young people in a school setting,” he said.

“This is currently an active police investigation and it is not appropriate for us to comment further.”

Counties Manukau police spokeswoman Katherine Manaton said the investigation into the incident at the school was still in its early stages.

“There’s still a lot of people to speak with. “[the investigation] is proceeding as per the operational requirements.”

manager Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said the incident was witnessed by a number of other children and a joint police, CYF and Ministry of Education team would be working with them over coming days, conducting interviews and providing support.

Meanwhile, a teenaged boy from Southern Cross Campus in Mangere East remained in Middlemore Hospital in a stable condition after being stabbed in a fight outside the school gate on Wickman Way on Tuesday.

Police would not comment on the investigation yesterday.

A resounding display of choral music ability With music in the air and smiling faces everywhere - the second night of the Heartland Bank Primary Schools’ Music Festival was a resounding display of choral music that enveloped the audience with an enjoyable and varied repertoire.

The first bracket from the Massed Choir, under the direction of musical director, Fiona Maw set the scene with an enthusiast rendition of the Nation Anthem, followed by three songs with crisp words, alternating actions, and excellent timing by the Rakau accompanists.

The smaller schools performing their individual items were a treat to see and hear as they performed with great enthusiasm.

Chertsey involved their whole school with a great rendition of Roar and The Eye of the Tiger. Dorie sang Here Comes the Sun and a very tuneful toe-tapping Jambalaya.

Methven produced a very Happy and Fireflies couplet and Hinds a lovely tuneful You’re Doing it Right and Brave.

The Ashburton Christian School produced an inspiring item using light effects for This Little Light of Mine and sang Seek Ye First in parts.

Both items were accompanied by very accomplished guitarists.

The second bracket of the Massed Choir conducted by Bryony Digby proved popular with both children and the audience.

Scooby Doo, Top of the World and Hampstead’s very own Greedy Cat – a seasoned performer.

The combined AIS/Ashburton College string group played with precision producing a fabulous sound that was a real treat.

The Special Choir under the direction of Elaine Vallender was once again near to perfection in diction and harmony.

Soloists, Elise Heffernan and Ashton Lamborn Veer were incredible with mature voices beyond their years.

The innovative use of rhythm sticks as an accompaniment, added to the enjoyment of the bracket.

The final bracket from the Massed Choir conducted by Anna Lischner was a rousing finale with a popular choice of songs, lovely sound and excellent light and shade. A song is something you can take with you wherever you go.

Congratulations and thank you to all those involved in yet another successful music festival evening.

Tattooed baker Bex Savage, 20, stood out from the crowd in more than one way when she took out Weston Milling’s Trainee of the Year on Monday.

The Ashburton bred baker did more than just wear her creativity on her sleeves, she dazzled the judges with her stunningly sweet treats.

Nine of New Zealand’s most promising bakers were chosen to compete in front of the thousands attending the Fine Food Show in Auckland.

The bakers were tested through various challenges, including decorating a birthday cake, baking a bread plait, making a sweet pastry tart and scones.

Judges were particularly impressed when Mrs Savage baked her “famous

pinky bar tart” with sweet chocolate pastry.

Initially baking at the local Countdown supermarket, she was quick to progress.

Mrs Savage was later employed as an apprentice at Rolleston Bakery at 16 years old and will soon be fully qualified.

She attributes a lot of her success to her bosses, Mark and Theresa Saunders, and the family atmosphere they foster.

“They just throw opportunities at me.

“They’re such a family business and they’ve accepted me into it,” she said.

Mrs Savage will be competing again next week, but not in baking.

She will be competing in the glamorous Miss Ink competition in Christchurch next Friday, where she will be modelling, herself, not her baking.

Five rural schools to benefit

By Thomas heaTon Five lucky rural schools will be able to add some educational tools to their schools’ arsenal.

Rural Women New Zealand and Hewlett Packard (HP) have teamed up to provide five rural schools a share of $20,000 worth of IT equipment and support.

Winning schools will benefit from a unique package to fit their students’ needs.

Finalist schools will be visited by a panel of judges in August, who will have a closer look at the school’s pupils and needs.

The winner will be announced late September and will work with HP to decide how best to use their prize.

Schools must have a roll of less than 300 pupils and must enter on the HP website by July 25.

Mid Canterbury is home to 13 schools who may benefit from a piece of the prize pack.

Hunt for clues continues A search of the Whanganui River for clues about missing man Whetu Hansen is expected to continue for the next few days, police say.

Six police and four Navy staff were involved in the search, said the officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison.

Asked if they were searching for a body, Mr Harrison said: “we are not pre-

pared to go into detail of why we are doing the search.”

Mr Hansen, 48, of Wanganui, went missing in November. A 56-year-old man has been charged with his murder and pleaded not guilty in the High Court at Wellington this month. He has name suppression. Police have asked the public to help find Mr Hansen’s dog Henry and a 1996 white Ford Courier ute. - APNZ

who was editor from 2000 to 2003, and Coulson, who was her deputy and then succeeded her, must have known about the practice, a claim both denied.

After deliberating for seven days, a jury at London’s Old Bailey unanimously found 46-year-old Coulson guilty of conspiring to eavesdrop on mobile-phone voicemails. The charge carries a maximum twoyear jail sentence.

The jury is still considering

charges against Coulson and former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman that they paid police officers for royal phone directories.

Brooks was acquitted of plotting to hack phones and of conspiring to bribe officials and obstruct a police investigation.

The jury also found former News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner not guilty of phone hacking.

Brooks’ husband, Charles, her

former secretary Cheryl Carter and News International security chief Mark Hanna were all acquitted of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by attempting to hide files, computers and other potential evidence from police.

The hacking scandal exposed a complex web of ties binding Britain’s political, media and police elite.

Add celebrity hacking victims who ranged from actors Jude Law and Sienna Miller to Prince William and Kate Middleton, and it’s clear why one lawyer involved called it the “trial of the century” — and why Judge John Saunders told the jury that “British justice is on trial”.

Coulson’s guilty verdict reawakened accusations that British politicians were too close to Murdoch, whose newspapers were long said to hold the power to swing elections. Cameron hired Coulson after two News of the World employees were convicted of phone hacking in 2007.

The prime minister apologised yesterday for giving Coulson a chance. “It was the wrong decision and I am very clear about that,” he said.

Labour Party leader Ed Miliband said Coulson’s appointment tainted Cameron’s government.

“He brought a criminal into the heart of Downing Street,” Miliband said. “He put his relationship with Rupert Murdoch ahead of doing the right thing.”

The verdict was vindication for Brooks, who was been the subject of such media fascination and online abuse that her lawyer called it a “witch hunt.”

Militants abduct 60 women and girls Suspected Boko Haram militants have abducted more than 60 women and girls, some as young as three, in the latest kidnappings in northeast Nigeria over two months since more than 200 schoolgirls were seized.

Analysts said the kidnapping, which happened during a raid this week on Kummabza village in the Damboa district of Borno state, could be an attempt by the Islamist group to refocus attention on its demands for the release of militant fighters.

Boko Haram has indicated it would be willing to release the 219 schoolgirls that it has held hostage since April 14 in

It was a simple trick — punching in passcodes to listen to messages left on other people’s phones.

For years the illegal technique, known as phone hacking, helped Britain’s News of the World tabloid get juicy stories about celebrities, politicians and royalty.

But the fallout eventually led to the shutdown of the country’s best-selling newspaper, split Rupert Murdoch’s powerful media empire and brought a storm of outrage down on the country’s rambunctious press.

The scandal yesterday brought a criminal conviction for former editor Andy Coulson on a charge of conspiring to hack phones — and an apology from Prime Minister David Cameron, who employed Coulson as his spin doctor.

Fellow News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, a Murdoch protege who was the chief executive of his British newspaper operation, was acquitted of all charges, as were her husband and three other defendants.

The nearly eight-month trial — one of the longest and most expensive in British history — was triggered by disclosures in 2011 about the scale of the News of the World’s illegal eavesdropping.

Several reporters and editors at the tabloid have pleaded guilty to hacking, as has private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was paid almost 100,000 pounds (now about $168,000) a year by the paper for his scoopgathering prowess.

Prosecutors argued that senior figures such as Brooks,

exchange for the freedom of its brothers-in-arms now held in Nigerian jails.

Nigeria initially refused to sanction any deal, but efforts have since been made to open talks with the group, with a possible prisoner swap part of discussions.

The military in Abuja said in a tweet late on Monday it could not confirm the latest abductions, and spokesmen were not immediately available for comment.

But Borno senator Ali Ndume confirmed the abductions, and said Boko Haram “took advantage” as people returned to the area to check on their farms

during flooding when there was no military presence in the area.

“Boko Haram selected young males and females” as hostages, and “left the elderly”, he said, amid local media reports that some 30 young boys may have also been taken.

A senior officer in the Damboa local government said: “Over 60 women were hijacked and forcefully taken away by the terrorists.

“The village was also destroyed,” he said, adding that “among those abducted are children between the ages of three and 12”.

Meanwhile, security forces in

neighbouring Cameroon killed eight gunmen believed to be members of Boko Haram, a paramilitary officer said.

The far north of Cameroon has become a hotbed of Boko Haram activity, with its porous borders making it an easy staging post for attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria.

A mixed squad of soldiers and paramilitary officers were patrolling the area around the town of Mora when they came across “a dozen Islamists”, the officer from regional capital Maroua said. “Clashes broke out and our forces got the upper hand. Eight Boko Haram were killed,” he said.

Explosion derails train A passenger train has derailed in eastern India, killing four people, after a suspected explosion on the tracks during a protest called

by Maoist insurgents, officials said. Some 12 carriages of the Rajdhani Express, which was travelling from the capital New Delhi to the northeastern state of Assam, toppled over yesterday in Bihar state’s Saran district.

“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of sabotage,” Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar said.

“There was a blast on the track, which could have caused the derailment.”

Seven killed in crash Two fishing boats have collided in southern Peru, killing at least seven people and injuring three more, the navy said. Another five have been reported missing following the incident, Peruvian naval spokesman Colver Ruiz said. The boats, loaded with fish, crashed in the darkness due to human error, he added. The incident happened about 30km from the port city of Pisco, where the injured have been hospitalised.

Deliberations continue Entertainer Rolf Harris has spent another day waiting, without a result, as jurors in his child sex abuse trial continue their deliberations. The six men and six women spent most of yesterday in the jury room at Southwark Crown Court, leaving only for short smoking breaks and lunch.

Justice Nigel Sweeney wrapped up proceedings at the end of the day by calling the jurors back into Courtroom 2 and telling them “enough for today”. He then reminded them not to contact each other overnight. The jurors will return to court today.

Shooting in Miami A mass shooting outside a Miami housing complex has left two people dead, a teen girl clinging to life, and six others seriously wounded. One man was so immersed in the carnage surrounding him that he didn’t realise he’d been shot three times.

Another victim was blasted in the face. And a 17-year-old girl, barely clinging to life, had two bullet holes in her chest and three in her leg, family members said. Moments before, at a small apartment building across from the Liberty Square housing complex, two men had pulled up in a dark SUV as more than a dozen people were hanging out. The men climbed out and took aim. When the shooting stopped, two men were dead and seven people were wounded. The shooters have not been identified or captured.

Gunmen kill passenger Gunmen have opened fire on a passenger jet as it landed in Pakistan’s troubled northwest, killing a woman passenger and wounding two crew in an attack staged as the military wages an anti-militant offensive. The Pakistan International Airlines flight, landing in Peshawar from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, came under fire late as it descended with more than 170 passengers on board.

I

t is strange to think that a district with such a healthy economy should have come so close to losing its collective voice for business.

Next week, business leaders will unveil a new-look group in the place of the old Ashburton Business Association.

Association chair Carol Johns suggests the new outfit is likely to have a new name to indicate a broad, district-wide focus.

Mid Canterbury may replace Ashburton in the title but the work done in recent months suggest this will not be the old ABA in drag.

It cannot be. Just five months ago, the association was perched on a precipice as it struggled to engage its members.

Meetings and activities were so poorly supported that the association called a meeting to find ways to tackle apparent apathy.

The lack of response to that meeting prompted a sudden flurry of concern that the association was on its last legs.

Losing it would mean losing the one group that had the potential to unify disparate interests when it mattered.

The association could be a lobby group, a networking tool, a knowledge base – a tool that no one business could lead on its own.

The turnaround was remarkable. A subsequent meeting attracted 70 people and successive meetings gauged support for a new association.

Evidently, the support remained. Businesses asked for an open association and a steering committee shaped what many hope is the solution.

Mrs Johns has lauded the high level of energy and enthusiasm for people keen to contribute to the project – a pleasing turnaround from early this year.

But this turnaround, and the hard work to which it has contributed, will not end when the new group is unveiled next week.

Strong, active and continued support is needed if our erstwhile successful business community is to make the most of the strong and representative association it has asked for.

Gross misconduct is never trivial. There is a highthreshold. Whether an incident is gross misconduct will always depend on the particular situation.

You must weigh up all the factors. A decision may never be pre-determined by school policies or breaking a school rule. The courts have established that you cannot automatically label a particular action or behaviour as gross misconduct.* We have not been told if the principal considered this defiance to be gross misconduct. If he has and has suspended, then

he school rule says no hair to touch the collar.

The principal requests the student abides by the rule.

The student refuses. The principal suspends the student.

Is this a matter of principle or about the principal? In my opinion this principal has mismanaged the decision-making process and left himself open to question.

Whatever you believe, the consequence of the principal’s action to suspend has resulted in his school and board of trustees hiring lawyers and having to explain themselves in court.

If the reason to suspend is simple defiance to a principal about one school rule, then the principal’s action is wrong.

As principals we cannot stand down or suspend a student for breaking a school rule.

The Ministry of Education guidelines that guide our decision-making clearly state when making the decision; If the incident does not fit into one of the three categories (gross misconduct, continual disobedience or behaviour risking serious harm) then you may not stand-down or suspend.* As principals we can only suspend for one of three reasons. Clearly no-one was harmed by this student’s defiance so that rules out behaviour risking harm. The two reasons left to suspend are gross misconduct and continual disobedience.

So was the defiance gross misconduct? The ministry guidelines state this; You should ask: Is any misconduct:

If the reason to suspend is because this defiance is the latest in a list of continual disobedience, and the principal has ensured all other avenues of working through the school discipline process have been exhausted, then the decision to suspend is right.

We have not been told if this disobedience is a first-time offence or if the student continually disobeys school rules.

The fact the student is in the first XV and the judge has issued a directive that he needs to return to school suggests this

is not a continual behaviour problem.

What has resulted from the unbending stance taken by the principal is court action that involves his board of trustees. This involvement from the board is because when a student is suspended, the board of trustees must meet within seven days and make a number of decisions. One crucial role the board plays is that of reviewer of the principal’s decision-making. Again the guidelines state: A board suspension meeting is an automatic review of the suspension process. pension meeting, the principal has a completely different role from the rest of the board, which independently reviews the principal’s decision to suspend. The board independently reviews the principal’s decision.

While the board may end up agreeing with the principal, it must be sure itself that the incident was fairly investigated, and was of a nature where suspension was an option (ie it amounted to gross misconduct, continual disobedience or behaviour risking serious harm).* The important decisions a board must make in terms of next steps are set out as in the chart left.

Clearly this board has decided on the third option as the student has been out of school for a number of weeks. This is unacceptable to the student’s parents, hence the court action.

Whatever happens next is anyone’s guess. Should it have gone this far for the offence of saying no to a principal? Gentrack launches on market

By Christopher AdAms With Gentrack’s sharemarket listing done and dusted, chief executive James Docking says his focus is firmly back on growing the business.

Several big deals were being negotiated, he said, while the technology company was also eyeing new markets and on the lookout for potential acquisitions.

Shares in the Auckland-based developer of management software used by water and energy utilities, as well as airports, closed at $2.49 last night _ a 3.7 per cent premium to the $2.40 offer price _ after rising as high as $2.60 immediately after the listing.

Gentrack’s dual NZX/ASX float got off to a much better start than corporate travel booking software firm Serko, whose shares plunged by almost 14 per cent after the company’s

listing on Tuesday. Serko shares rebounded yesterday, closing up 6.3 per cent at $1.01, but still below the $1.10 issue price.

Docking said Gentrack, whose competitors include software giants Oracle and SAP, was having success in winning bigger deals with larger customers and becoming a listed business would give potential clients more confidence in the firm.

“We’ve got quite a few big deals we’re working on, particularly in Australia and the UK.” In the longer term, he said, the company could move into new markets including North America and Scandinavia.

Docking said the company, founded in 1989, was on the lookout for potential acquisitions of “boutique” software firms whose technology could bolt onto Gentrack’s offering.

around the world. Energy utilities using its technology include Genesis Energy, Meridian Energy and Vector in New Zealand and Origin Energy and Alinta in Australia. Its software is used by international airports including Hong Kong, JFK in New York, Newark Liberty,

Sydney, Melbourne and Birmingham, as well as Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.

Matt Goodson, managing director at Salt Funds Management, said Gentrack’s listing had been solid. “[Gentrack] is a good, cashgenerative business with a long-

term track record,” he said.

The company has forecast a net profit of $3.7 million for 2014, rising to $9.3 million in 2015.

Gentrack raised $36 million in new capital through the listing, which will be used to pay down debt.

Building set to dazzle centre A four-storey glass building is set to dazzle Christchurch’s city centre.

Businessman Tim Glasson unveiled plans for his pivotal Triangle Centre site yesterday, and it is hoped the announcement will provide further encouragement for former Christchurch CBD tenants to return.

The site, which will boast ground floor retail, hospitality areas and three levels of offices, opens onto Colombo, Cashel and High Streets and sits opposite the new city car park and diagonally across from Ballantynes.

Two tenants have already

signed on - New Zealand’s largest professional services company Beca, and ANZ Bank.

Leading Sydney architects Esquisse Design Studio have provided the concept for the new building, which has a strong three dimensional effect, with New Zealand’s Peddle Thorp Architects developing and delivering the final design.

Head of office leasing at Colliers International Ryan Geddes said the development of the Triangle Centre was a significant step in giving tenants the confidence to return to the central city.

“This announcement is exact-

ly the sort of news that tenants eyeing the CBD have been waiting to hear.”

Mr Geddes said tenants were wowed by the cutting edge design and were keen to have a strong presence in the cornerstone location, the heart of the retail and office precinct.

“I think it’s easy to forget that major developments such as the Triangle Centre take years of hard work. People naturally want to see something happening quickly but planning for these sorts of buildings doesn’t happen overnight.”

Work is due to commence in early August.

Profit warning raises concerns Warehouse Group’s profit warning last week, which erased $94 million from the retailer’s market capitalisation, has raised concerns about the outlook for both its core business and the success of its acquisition strategy.

The company’s shares have shed 8.1 per cent since it announced on Friday that profit this year would be lower than it previously estimated as it cuts margins to boost sales of seasonal winter stock at its core ‘red shed’ stores which have been crimped by warmer weather, and after sales and profits lagged forecasts at its Torpedo7

unit. Warehouse, New Zealand’s largest listed retailer, is in the process of rejuvenating its 91 ‘red shed’ stores, which account for about 70 per cent of sales.

To expand group earnings, the company aims to grow the ‘non-red’ side of its business to be as large as the ‘red sheds’, having bought 11 businesses in 18 months, adding technology and appliance retailer Noel Leeming, outdoor sports chain R&R Sports and online sporting goods retailer Torpedo7.

“The downgrade creates concern around the core business and future earnings growth,” Forsyth Barr analyst Chelsea

Leadbetter said in a note. “Red Sheds has been a repeat offender behind recent downgrades despite significant capital invested in the store base.”

Auckland-based Warehouse acquired a 51 per cent stake in Torpedo7 in April 2013 and has since raised its holding to 80 per cent.

Since Warehouse first invested in the business, Torpedo7 has acquired online fitness equipment retailer No.1 Fitness, online sports supplements company Shotgun Supplements and outdoor sports apparel and equipment chain R&R Sport.

New real estate statistics show farm sales are up, however environmental considerations are causing a degree of caution in Canterbury.

The Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ) data showed a 26.2 per cent lift in sales for the year to the end of May, compared to the same period last year.

Sales for the last quarter were also up, with 52 more farms (564) sold in the three months ending May 2014, compared to the quarter ending May 2013.

The median price per hectare for all farms sold in the three months to May 2014 was $25,018 compared to $20,499 in 2013, representing a 22 per cent hike. The price was up 1.8 per cent on April figures.

The REINZ All Farm Price index LAMB (15kg) dropped 0.1 per cent in the May quar$88 ter, compared to the three months to April,$86 but was up 13.7 per cent on the May figures last year. $84 The index adjusts for differences in farm $82 size, location and farming type compared $80 to the median price per hectare, which does not adjust for these $78 factors.

REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said the lift in volumes and prices reflected the healthy state of the rural sector.

However, he said the easing of the dairy payout, increasing interest rates and environmental compliance issues were causing purchasers to be more thorough with their due diligence investigations.

Overall, grazing properties accounted for +40 per cent of sales in the quarter ending May, finishing properties 21.6 per cent and dairy properties 16.8 per cent.

The median sales price per hectare for dairy farms was $33,543 (95 properties) for the quarter ending May 2014, compared to $34,615 for the three months ended April (105 properties) and $34,850 forVthe three months STEERS BULLS ended May 2013.

410 Finishing farms were up slightly on the April figures ($22,108 per hectare) 400 to $22,692, and almost $5000 a hectare on prices 390 for the May 2013 quarter. The median finishing farm size was 58ha.

Prices 380 for grazing farms also lifted marginally to $15,833ha, from the April370 figure of $15,324.

Wet autumn also hitting nut growers

Arable farmers are not alone in lamenting the wet autumn. Nut growers have also struggled to get the harvest in.

Ashburton hazelnut growers Les and Linda McCracken were lucky to get half their crop in before the April rain set in and the remainder of the crop later in the season.

“We’ve got rid of probably twothirds of them already – we took a bit over a tonne-and-a-half north to the place that buys them in Blenheim and we’ve got about another tonne to process, which we won’t do until July,” Mr McCracken said.

“If you get them out of the rain they dry reasonably well, but there’s always a bit of a question mark.

“The longer they take to dry the more chance there is of mould further down the track.

“The ones we harvested in the wet were the ones we took up to Blenheim first to get them in their drying unit.”

However, the McCrackens are aware of other growers further south who will probably not get this season’s harvest in at all.

Mr McCracken said the situation was comparable to the problems small seed growers faced during the autumn. “It was either too wet to get on to the ground or the product was too wet and it spoilt.”

Despite the adverse conditions, the McCrackens still managed to produce double the weight harvested last year.

The Hazelnut Company in Kirwee purchased 50 tonne of nuts all up last year and Mr McCracken said that figure was also likely to double this year.

“Most orchards in Mid Canterbury would have got twice as much as last year – but that is more to do with the maturity of the trees,” Mr McCracken said.

“Most of the trees were planted between about 2003 and 2006 – so they are all about the same age and they should be producing more each year.

“The issue is that they can be biennial; they will crop better every second year so if you get a heavy crop it will affect the amount of vegetation that the next crop grows on.

“All the energy goes into the nuts rather than the vegetation.”

Young shepherds aim to take world by storm

Eight young Kiwis are heading to Lincoln, to compete in the preliminary round of competition at the World Young Shepherds Challenge.

The top two performers will go on to represent New Zealand at the final in France.

“The challenge is a fantastic event, showcasing a vital industry and a range of young people from around the globe who have a major contribution to make to the international sheep industry,” Beef+Lamb New Zealand chief executive Dr Scott Champion said.

Young Farmers members from across New Zealand applied for a chance to compete and the top eight were chosen.

Brooke Elliot, 23, chairperson of the Maniototo YFC, works on a station and also runs a contract sheep-dipping business. She competes in dog trialling and equestrian events.

Caleb Eady, 20, of Featherston works as a shepherd in South Wairarapa. Caleb, an avid rugby player, is involved with the South Wairarapa club.

Harriet Gardner, 20, works on her family’s farm in Waimate. She belongs to the Glenavy YFC, and has been the recipient of a number of scholarships and industry awards.

Katey Craig, 21, of the Marton Club is a junior shepherd at Otiwhiti Station in Hunterville, and is studying towards a Diploma in Agriculture, enjoys dog trialling and was the recent recipient of JD Bashford and Royce Nicholls Agricultural Scholarships.

Mitch Hoare, 19, of the Te Kuiti club, is a senior cadet at Waipaoa Station. Mitch enjoys dog trials and was awarded the station’s top junior student and the top ability awards last year.

Christine Wellington, 20, of Taupo belongs to the Reporoa club and works as a senior shep-

herd at Landcorp Aratiatia in Waikato. In her spare time she plays basketball, netball and is involved in dog trialling.

And lastly is Mitch Nation of Dannevirke. The 23-year- old works as block manager at Pohuetai Farms and also competes in speed shearing.

The competition, running alongside the 46th ANZ Young Farmer Contest grand final events, July 3-5, will consist of shearing, condition scoring, a quad bike obstacle course, identifying sheep breeds, foot trimming, drenching, counting sheep and demonstrating knowledge of the sheep industry.

The international competition will run in France from September 28 to October 4.

Emma’s battling the best A

fter another whirlwind trip to the United States, Emma Gilmour is feeling increasingly comfortable in her Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship (GRC) car.

Driving a Hyundai Veloster Turbo for Rhys Millen Racing (RMR), she finished third in both her heats in the Washington, DC-based third round of the (GRC) last weekend.

“Although I didn’t make the last chance qualifier race for the final, it was a good weekend in terms of making progress with my Veloster.

“I am working closely with the RMR engineers to find a set-up that suits my driving and feel like we are making progress.”

Racing against some of the world’s top professional drivers in this ultra-competitive 10-round series, can be daunting but Emma is confident that her “mental game” continues to improve at each round.

“It’s all about getting more time in the car and more time racing side by side with these incredibly talented and aggressive drivers.

“I have nearly a month now before the next round in New York and will be studying the car’s data to make sure I can get the best out of it there.”

Patrik Sandell won the final GRC race at RFK Stadium in Washington, in what was the first motorsport event to take place in the United States’ capital in over a decade.

Emma is en route home for the fourth round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship

(NZRC), driven by VINZ, the Trusthouse Racetech Rally Wairarapa on Saturday.

Switching back to her Suzuki Swift Maxi, and teaming up again with Australian co-driver Ben Atkinson, she is looking forward to racing her radical home-built rally car in the oneday, 180km event.

Sinatra’s first Jersey licence up for sale Frank Sinatra’s first New Jersey driver’s licence is on the auction block.

The Star-Ledger newspaper reports that the yellowed, textonly 1934 licence was issued, typo and all, to Francis Sintra, 841 Garden Street, Hoboken, New Jersey.

The licence is signed by the 19-year-old Sinatra, whose eyes, of course, are recorded as blue.

It was issued a year before Sinatra got his first big break in the music industry.

Also included is a 1940 letter to the state Commissioner of Motor Vehicles from the lawyer of a man who had been involved in a car crash with Sinatra, insisting that Sinatra’s driving privileges be revoked until he pays up.

■ V8 SUPERCARS

Back to the big fields?

V8 Supercars are confident of returning to a 28-car field next year, with three unused entries put up for sale.

Chief executive James Warburton this week announced the start of a tender process for the dormant racing entitlement contracts (RECs), which were handed back by Tekno Autosports, Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport and Tony D’Alberto Racing before the 2014 season.

Each REC allows its owner to race one car, with holders also entitled to a share of V8s’ end-of-year profits.

The move opens the door for new teams to enter the category, existing outfits to expand or previous entrants to return. There is also the possibility of teams competing in V8 Supercars’ development series to step up into the premier class.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to compete in one of the most successful categories in world motorsport and we believe there will be significant interest,” Warburton said.

■ WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Victor no longer the ug G

o to any café around town on a Saturday morning and it’s immediately obvious that catching up for a coffee is a popular pastime.

And why not?

It’s a nice thing to do.

Last Saturday we met up with some family travelling through town and enjoyed some relaxed time in a local café.

It was great fun because we not only caught up with them but also with other friends who happened to be out for a coffee too.

At this particular café I couldn’t help noticing a very striking black and white enlarged photograph on the wall.

The picture features lovely old buildings in Clyde, with a Vauxhall Victor parked outside.

The car appears to be in pristine condition and I think it’s a 1963 model.

The image prompted some thoughts.

Firstly, it’s a really neat photo taken by someone with artistic flair who has captured the cloudy, almost mystic mood of the place.

It was also a reminder - and I think my friend and colleague Roger Hart will relate to this - of an office car we drove in our very early working life.

The 1963 model was in fact an upgrade; previously the office car was an earlier, probably 1958 or 1959 model, which could perhaps be described as an unusual looking vehicle, a bit of an ugly ducking if you like.

It was probably described as other things too.

We had those cars at about the time

the Guardian got their first company vehicle – the Benelli motor scooter referred to in my last column.

Interestingly our office and the Ashburton Guardian were neighbours in Burnett Street, but I don’t recall comparing the two forms of office transport, or thinking that ours had four wheels and a roof rather than the two-wheeled open motoring option next door.

From what we have now heard there is absolutely no comparison when it came to fun.

There was definitely more fun being had on the Benelli!

After looking at the pictures another thought sprang to mind as well.

Why on earth did Vauxhall call a range of models the Victor?

There is probably a logical reason, but right now it’s escaping anyone I’ve asked.

That in turn leads to another thought – how do manufacturers decide how to designate their models?

Some names are quite apparent.

Others not.

The Honda Jazz – especially the new model – really does look quite jazzy!

Hopefully said friend and colleague Roger will be getting one of those to test drive.

And better still hope I’m around at the time.

But why did Nissan call one of their models the Cedric?

Mind you if they hadn’t, one of our cats would have needed to come up with a different name.

He was a stray who arrived just as a

Nissan Cedric drove by, so of course we called him Cedric.

Just as well a Prenvic – yes that’s right a car with this name was made in Belgrade in 1959 – had not gone down the street.

The poor old stray might not have liked being called Prenvic; he seemed to like being known as Cedric.

Mind you, regardless of how its name came about you don’t tend to see many - if any - Prenvics around here.

Since first seeing the photo of the Vauxhall Victor I’ve been back to have another look, and on my second visit found out that I’m not the only patron who likes that picture.

Deano East, who is a long haul driver, regularly stops at the café which is on his route.

He likes the photo both for its artistic appeal and because he likes Vauxhall cars.

Deano says he enjoys a break and the chance to gaze at a striking picture.

In the past Deano owned a Vauxhall Victor, which he says was a great vehicle.

It was fun meeting him and talking about cars.

During its production run the Vauxhall Victor had at least four model changes, and was produced in a range of variants.

They were all popular.

There has perhaps been just one downside to this story – there is some yummy treats on offer in this café and the research hasn’t been at all good for the waistline.

World champ’s medical files stolen Michael Schumacher’s management has warned that someone is trying to sell documents that may be the medical files of the seven-time Formula One world champion.

Nearly six months after sustaining serious head injuries in a skiing accident, the 45-yearold Michael Schumacher left a French hospital last week and was transferred to neighbouring Switzerland to continue his recovery.

He is no longer in a drug-induced coma.

Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, said in a statement yesterday that notes made about the German’s case have been stolen, and threatened to sue any publication willing to use them.

Kehm said: “We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. The theft has been reported.”

Schumacher’s office will “press for criminal charges and damages” if the documents and data are made public, Kehm said.

Ashburton Boxing At the Canterbury boxing assn tournament held at the Cashmere club in Christchurch on Saturday night Ashburton had three lads competing.

Connor Perriton who has been on the improve with every time he competes once more showed that he has the will and ability to compete at a higher level his opponent won a split decision but Connors trainers are sure that the future for Connor looks good Christian Tikao further added to his win list. His opponent a very experienced lad who has had many bouts at national and also at international level made it very hard on Christian and the bout was at times quite messy. Christian’s opponent Frank Endicott will also be a lad with a future but this time Christian was a clear winner winning all three rounds.

Ashburtons final competitor Matt Miller had a cheer squad of mates who made the trip up and were quite vocal. Matt started with a roar and keep his opponent under pressure for the first round during the second which was very even the crowd showed their support for both lads. The final round both lads gave it all and Matt lost on a split vote.

Needless to say Matt will benefit and at the Ashburton tournament in August we hope for a rematch. Ashburton boxing is on a roll with several more events upcoming and all boxers keen to compete.

Ashburton County Lions The Annual Changeover of Officers Evening in Ashburton County Lions Club was celebrated recently. Out-going President Lilian Wakelin welcomed visiting Lions District officers; representatives from Ashburton, Ashburton Pakeke, Hinds & Districts, Mayfield & Districts, Methven and Rakaia Lions Clubs together with members, husbands and partners of Ashburton County Lions.

A toast to Lions Clubs International was proposed by 1st Vice District Governor elect Fern Blake who reminded all that the Lions Association is a powerful force for good. Zone Chairman Christine Stewart replied, affirming the comments made in the toast.

A beautiful meal followed, during which pianist Stephen, with Paula and Ruth on strings, provided background music. This was appreciated. It was especially noted that the payment made to them was being donated to “Music in Schools” with which they each are involved.

Having circulated her excellent annual report among members, President Lilian highlighted many of the innovative activities in which members had been involved and which had significantly benefitted a number of community groups in this past twelve months. In excess of $14,000 had been distributed in the year.

She thanked all members for their support and their efforts.

The Blake Trophy, for the member, not on the Club Board for the year, who quietly achieves, was presented to Lion Barbara Borland.

Past Council Chair Neil Blake officiated at the induction of the 2014-15 President, Jan Stonyer. He also inducted the members of the Board of Directors for the year. In accepting the role of President, Jan reminded all that Lions is a team effort and that the acronym for TEAM is “Together Everyone Achieves Much”.

Raffles were drawn, members and visitors equally sharing the prizes. A lively session of Tail Twisting with (out-going) Lion Jackie Ryan and (incoming) Lion Moyra Whiting was enjoyed, even by those whose errant ways were found out, and singing of the National Anthem concluded the evening

Harold Kemp told us about Cornwell’s history of smuggling into and out of England. High export taxes on wool and salt made export unprofitable, but encouraged smuggling to Europe for easy sale. High import duties made brandy, wine, coffee, tea and tobacco expensive and generated substantial government revenue. Smuggling avoided duty and reduced the price. Salt or wool smuggled to France gave the cash to buy brandy, wine etc for sale back in England. Over 2000 coopers made barrels for containers.

Smugglers used every harbour and landing point and over 300 vessels. Nearly everyone in Cornwall were involved, landed gentry financing, ship builders, crews and transport. Local courts rarely found anyone guilty and even churches stored smuggled merchandise.

Smuggling has given English expressions like “The coast is clear” and “bootlegging”. Even the children’s nursery rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep refers to the taxes levied. Harold also spoke of the Cornish Tin Miners. Wages were calculated from the time mining started until they finished 12 hours later. It could take two hours to walk to the mine and descend to the pit face and when they finished mining, another two hours to ascend and walk home, a 16-hour day!

Firstly she thanked the members of the Historical Society for the lovely luncheon they put on. There were 19 apologies which were accepted.

Jennifer Marks gave a very comprehensive report outlining the year’s activities.

The financial was read and confirmed.

Our membership stands at 64 with 55 being active members.

The Lions Club of Ashburton Pakeke held their annual Change Over meeting with a good attendance of members despite a number of apologies, and with partners and guests from other neighbouring Lions Clubs the numbers swelled to over 90. President John Lynch welcomed all and introduced the guests; the programme commenced with a Toast to the visitors proposed by Lion Meredith Lowe who spoke of the friendship that develops from the interaction between the clubs within the District. Lion Rex Whiting from the Ashburton lions suitably replied. Pakeke member PDG Lion Noel Lowe in proposing the toast to Lions International reminded the gathering of the commitment that clubs make to the international organisation. In response PDG Ken McKenzie noted some of the valuable aid that is given to needy causes around the world. Of particular mention was the programmes aimed to improve the sight of people where expertise is not always available.

Before dessert was served Lion Milner Jacob proposed a toast to the ladies and noted that the ladies not only provided the colour to the club but also were a big support in all activities. Social Pakeke lady member Jeanette Tarbotton replied.

Lively entertainment for the evening was provided by Rose Stead on the piano accompanied by herself on a keyboard.

President John read his annual report which highlighted a successful and busy year. Membership stands at 53, but with the inclusion of the ladies at the monthly tea meeting the average attendance is between 70 and 80. $12,210 has been donated to local charities during the year with funds coming from the charity auction, sausage sizzles, annual Christmas raffle and other projects. A highlight of the year is the annual day oyt for the special needs group from the College, and the out and about meeting which this year took the club to Erewhon Station.

Lion Ron Patterson concluded his Tail Twister slot by introducing Lion Milner Jacob as the new Tail twister. PDG Ken McKenzie then inducted new president Lion Bob Rogers and his Board for the coming year with 1st VP Lion Ray Harraway and 2nd VP Lion Peter O’Neil.

President Lion Bob Rogers thanked retiring president Lion John for his outstanding year and presented him with his Retiring Lion. Next Ladies Craft day July 14 at Rona Evan’s home.

Ashburton Men’s Probus Club Our first speaker was John Matsinger who was born in the Netherlands in 1932. His family farmed near the Normandy coastline. Barley, wheat, carrots and potatoes were grown on the good soils. John’s great grandfather was one of founders of Rabobank.

Life changed dramatically in May 1940 when Germany invaded. The family experienced the dangers and difficulties of war. Younger German soldiers were enthusiastic but those older just wanted to go home. The Allies had to clear German land mines. German prisoners were made to walk over the land to ensure effective clearing.

John’s older brother went to the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), for his CMT, while John served the Dutch Air Force.

In 1953 John and his brother paid their own way to fly from Amsterdam to Auckland taking nine days via Rome, Cairo, Bangkok, Singapore, Darwin, Alice Springs, and Sydney. They worked on farms and freezing works. John bought a

Ashburton Savage Club On the glorious winter afternoon of June 22, about 30 members from the South Canterbury Savage Club, led by President Brian Armstrong, made their

biennial visit. The bus arrived at 1.30pm, which gave time to ‘meet and greet’ before the official part of the afternoon commenced at 2.00pm.

Tohunga, Ray Mitchell, inducted President Brian onto the dais, where he joined our Great Chief John Davis, who welcomed all members and guests. Great Chief John & President Brian, exchanged club badges bestowing honorary membership of each other’s club.

Savage Clubs throughout the world have endured for almost two centuries, having started in London on October 12th. 1857, and embracing many of the customs of the ethnic people of the countries to which the organisation has spread. There have been many famous members including Kings of England, Prime Ministers, Sir Robert Falcon Scott, Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin and many more. Although with the passing of time, the significance of many of the older traditions and ceremonies of the different countries may have faded, the real tradition of our organisation which is “Tact - Tolerance - Talent”, still remains firmly intact.

Ashburton Wahine Club The 2nd Hui was held on June 5. The night started with a potluck tea. After the opening ceremony and welcome, the curtains opened.

The theme for the night was “Birds and the Bees”, the choir sang a bracket of three songs, “Snowbird”, “The White Cliffs of Dover” and “Mock in’ Bird Hill”.

There were five sketches, “Supermarket”, “Birds and Bess”, “The Parrot”, “Holy Land” and “Little Jimmy”, they were received with great laughter. A reading about a parrot at the Zoo and the “Chicken Dance” were great entertainment and also the mime “Love in the Fowl house” was enjoyed by the audience. The programme finished with three songs “Bye Bye Blackbird”, “Yellow Bird” and “The Birds and the Bees”.

Coronation Target Shooting Club

A good turnout for the third round of the County Shield series on 16th. Nick Stewart continued his run of good form to top score for the home team and Dave Kingsbury whacked in a possible as the sole Hinds member. Savanna McArthur topped both the women’s and Junior grades. Tuesday Tyro night once again was very popular Matt Batty, Emily Smith and Lanell McArthur stood out.

Monday 23 belonged to Ashley Wells who returned after a long break from the sport to show he had lost nothing.

Nor’westers Muso’s Club The Queen’s Birthday Party went off, with local bands ‘ Glitch ‘ & ‘Underpass ‘ going down a real treat. The two bands had heaps of energy and kept the dance floor busy. A big thanks to all band members for the big effort they put in and thanks to all the staff at The Devon Hotel.

The May Jam was a terrific day, with all the usual suspects and more turning up for a great afternoon’s entertainment.

First up was Eddie on guitar and vocals with Phil on bass. A tidy set with covers from The Rolling Stones, Herbs, Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elmore James, and Billy Idol. This was followed by three parts of Glitch, with Phil on bass/vocals, Jesse on guitar/vocals and Zippy on drums/vocals and they powered through some classic rock covers – with the crowd highlight T Rex’s ‘Children of the Revolution’ with Phils amazing vocals and facial expressions.

Two Crates were up next, with Rocky on vocals, Trem on guitar/vocals, Mark on bass, Rob on the skins and the beautiful vocals of Gemma up front on lead vocals. Along with three great original songs, they also did covers. Next up was Aiden Anderson taking on the drums for a magnificent solo playing the classic CCR number ‘ Green River ‘. This young guy has only been playing the drums for four months. Jam bands made up the remainder of the day and the crowd loved every minute of it.

To finish off the day we had Gemma on vocals with Phil on bass and they treated us to some Punk Rock. For anyone who has not been before come on down and join in the fun. Everyone is welcome. If you have instruments bring them down, if not we have all the gear set up for you to play, bring your mates and play a tune or just sit back and enjoy.

The Plains Ladies Probus Club It was a fine frosty morning for the June meeting held at the RSA. We had two new inductions, Clare Wesley and Sue Power were welcomed as new members and presented with their badges. There were two birthdays and one wedding anniversary. The movie for July is Sunshine on Leith a good musical which is on at 11 am on July 2. We had a resignation from Barbara Tarbotton and wish her well.

Natilie gave the Treasurer’s report and gave the members a breakdown of how their subscription is spent. Sandy told us that the New Zealand Probus is coming along very well and we will continue to support it. There is a lunch to be held at the RSA for our August birthday meeting. Instead of a mini speaker this month several of our members from the R&R Line dancing group gave a demonstration.

For our main speaker Sharon Breakwell from Wastebusters came and gave us an inside view of how things are run and what happens to all our unwanted goods that can be recycled. Wastebusters started at the Ashburton District Council refuse centre 20 years ago and after losing the contract with them, they moved along the street to their present site 4.5 years ago. They went from 26 staff down to four. They are a standalone company not funded by the local council so have to make ways to fund themselves. By recycling cardboard and selling it, making compost, gathering paper, plastic from the freezing works and 100 other businesses they have worked up a good business. They also visit the schools educating children helping them to understand. Working with farms as well, as new regulations stop people from burning rubbish. Sharon brought along several items that are being made from recycled goods and surprised people with what is just being produced. She also spoke about the Wheelie Bin project that is being discussed for the town at the moment for recycling. Wilma thanked Sharon for her time, and an educational insight to life at Wastebusters. The next meeting is to be held on July 28.

Fannin relishing time with Myers Teenager Shaun Fannin couldn’t have wished for a better start to his riding career with Kevin Myers (right).

Originally from Hastings and accomplished in the show jumping and equestrian disciplines, Fannin has made the most of his first six weeks with the Wanganui trainer.

The 18-year-old rode his first winner earlier this month when

he was successful over hurdles with the Myers-prepared and part-owned Houndscry and then won a highweight at Wanganui aboard stable runner Reeperbahn.

Six days later he went north to Te Aroha to claim a maiden hurdle on the Stephen Ralphtrained Thenamesbond.

“Kevin had both of them in

his stable and Matt Gillies usually goes down to ride them, but they wanted a claimer on them,” said Fannin, who has a threekilo allowance.

Now with Kelly Thompson, Cecil won a novice hurdle at Riverton three starts back before finishing in fourth place on the flat and fifth in the Great Western Hurdle.

Suarez charged over biting claim Uruguay star Luis Suarez could be facing a lengthy ban after he was charged by FIFA for allegedly biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup. FIFA said yesterday that its disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Suarez.

If the Liverpool striker - already banned twice before for biting - is found guilty of assaulting an opponent, FIFA rules call for a ban of at least two matches up to a maximum of 24 months.

FIFA asked the team to present evidence yesterday and a decision must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay play Colombia in a round-of-16 match.

Uruguay captain Diego Godin headed home an 81st-minute goal to secure a 1-0 in a gritty Group D battle in Natal that ensured his team progressed, while Italy was eliminated in the first round for the second straight World Cup. But the match was overshadowed by the Suarez incident just moments before Godin’s winner.

Television replays showed Suarez appearing to attempt to sink his teeth into Chiellini’s shoulder in an off-the-ball incident.

Match referee Marco Rodriguez of Mexico appeared not to see the incident and took no action.

Afterwards a disgusted Chiellini told Italian television: “He bit me, it’s clear, I still have the mark.”

“The referee should have blown his whistle and given him a red card,” he added.

Suarez sought to play down the incident to Uruguayan television, claiming Chiellini had

barged him.

“There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them,” Suarez said.

Uruguay’s veteran manager Oscar Tabarez pleaded ignorance of the incident.

“I didn’t see it. I’d like to see the images first,” he told the post-match press conference.

Tabarez also suggested Suarez was being victimised by

journalists.

“He is the preferred target for a lot of media,” Tabarez said.

Pressed on the issue, a visibly irritated Tabarez refused to condemn Suarez.

“This is a football World Cup, it’s not about cheap morality.”

But despite Suarez’s comments, video evidence of the incident appears damning.

If found guilty by FIFA disciplinary chiefs, the incident

would almost certainly mean the end of the tournament for Suarez, who was lambasted during the 2010 World Cup for his deliberate goal-line handball that denied Ghana a famous quarterfinal victory.

In November 2010, he was banned for seven matches by the Dutch FA after biting PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder when he played for Ajax.

Suarez was dubbed “the Cannibal of Ajax” by Dutch media.

In April 2013, he was given a 10-match ban by the English FA after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield.

He was also banned for eight matches in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

Italy, who had Claudio Marchisio sent off in the second half, join a growing number of European sides on the World Cup scrapheap after the exit of Spain, England, Croatia and Bosnia.

In Group D’s other game in Belo Horizonte, Costa Rica ensured England’s miserable World Cup ended with a whimper in a 0-0 draw.

The result meant Costa Rica win the group, unbeaten after three games, with Uruguay finishing as runners-up.

Costa Rica will play Group C runners-up Greece on Saturday after they scored a last-gasp 2-1 win over Ivory Coast to scrape into the last 16.

No deal to draw, say Germany and US before game

By Nesha starcevic There won’t be friendly phone calls, there won’t be any dirty deals. That’s the promise from both sides ahead of Germany’s final Group G match against the United States.

A draw tomorrow in Recife would see both teams advance to the knockout stage at the expense of Portugal and Ghana, who play at the same time in Brasilia.

Both sides have been answering questions about a possible conspiracy, or as the Germans call it, a “non-aggression pact,” and both have sharply rejected any suggestions of a deal.

No wonder the questions are

being asked, since the Germans were jointly responsible for one of the more shameful episodes in World Cup history. Germany scored after 10 minutes against Austria at the 1982 World Cup in Gijon, Spain, and the two teams just knocked the ball around for the next 80 minutes since the outcome guaranteed a slot in the next round for both.

It also eliminated Algeria, which had stunned Germany 2-1 in their opener.

After that match, FIFA made sure that final group matches are played simultaneously, to reduce the possibility of a ‘gentlemen’s agreement.’

Germany and the United States are linked in many ways.

Five players on the US team have American fathers and German mothers, with four of them playing in the Bundesliga.

US coach Jurgen Klinsmann was a star of the Germany team that won the last of its three World Cup titles in 1990. He also scored when the two teams last met in the group stage of a World Cup, a 2-0 victory for Germany at the 1998 tournament in France.

In 2006 at home, Klinsmann guided Germany to a thirdplace finish as coach, with assistant Joachim Loew, who is now Germany’s coach. Berti Vogts, one of Klinsmann’s staff, was the coach of Germany when it won its last title, the 1996 Euro-

“I don’t think that we are made for draws, really, except if it happens like tonight — two late goals, last seconds,” Klinsmann said after his team’s 2-2 draw with Portugal, which scored deep into stoppage time.

“I think both teams go into this game and they want to win the group.

“You’re talking about a game (in Gijon) that is decades away that is only part of the Germany history and not the United States,” Klinsmann said. “The

The German camp was equally indignant about any suggestions of a fix. “It would be highly unsportsmanlike and unfair to other teams if anyone on the pitch had such thoughts,” defender Mats Hummels said.

Portugal and Ghana keep fingers crossed

By Steve DouglaS Whether at international or club level, Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals, skills and mere presence has got his various teams out of many sticky situations down the years.

Yet even the world player of the year may have met his match at the World Cup, considering the size of the task he faces with Portugal tomorrow.

Arguably the most hotly contested group in Brazil reaches its climax with both qualification spots still up for grabs heading into the final round of fixtures in Group G.

Portugal and Ghana both need to win when they meet in Brasilia — but both know they are at the mercy of a match being played simultaneously more than 1900km away, Germany v the United States in Recife.

With Germany and the US on four points, a draw would put both teams through to the last 16. In that case, the outcome of the game between Portugal and Ghana, who are on one point, would not matter.

Portugal’s task is even harder because its goal difference is -4, much worse than the Germans (+4) and the Americans (+1).

“We’re depending on third parties,” a resigned-looking Portugal coach Paulo Bento said.

“We’re depending on results of other teams.”

Ghana, which has a goal difference of -1, has more hope. A victory, combined with a win for Germany, could see it qualify at the expense of the US. It is now under two weeks and counting until Mid Canterbury take on Counties Manukau for the Ranfurly Shield in Pukekohe.

The Ashburton Trust Mid Canterbury side has already ramped up preparations for what will be the union’s 13th attempt to lift the log-o-wood, and first attempt since 2002.

Coach Glenn Moore was forced to name an extended squad of 37 for a warm-up match against Ellesmere due to

injury and unavailability.

“Most of those guys have been involved in the last couple of months anyway so have an idea of the structures we want to run.

“There are some injuries and you can never get around that.

Some might be back in time and some might not so we need to have that covered off.”

On Moore’s side is the continuity from last year’s Meads Cup winning squad with the majority of the players involved in last year’s campaign.

“We have a few new things we’d like to do and the base blueprint is known to a lot of the guys which makes things a bit more simplistic. But at the end of the day you need game time to put that into practice.”

Some of the new recruits to the Moore camp include former Mid Canterbury representatives Brenton Connell, Joel Hewson, Jon Sharpe and Matt Grooms while the two players of origin in the mix both have ITM Cup experience with prop Scott Vessey playing two seasons in

Northland and Matt Thatcher involved in the Canterbury squad - so there is plenty of big game experience to lean on.

Counties will be without their Super 15 players but Moore expects coach Tana Umaga to put out a strong calibre side, to be named tomorrow, which the Hammers will get a glimpse of in the first shield challenge against Thames Valley next Wednesday.

The same day Mid Canterbury will have the important 80 minute hit out against Ellesmere.

“It will be as much a case of establishing our processes as winning the game,” Moore said.

They may not be comparable to Counties but Ellesmere already claimed the scalp of South Canterbury with a 27-26 win in Dunsandel last week, showing they will be the test Moore is after before the shield challenge.

Mid Canterbury claimed its first win over the sub-union in nine years with a last-gasp Davey Maw penalty sealing a 19-17 win in Kirwee.

Team NZ confirms challenge Team New Zealand has confirmed it will challenge for the 35th America’s Cup. Chairman Keith Turner said the team had secured sufficient private funding and sponsorship to be able to commit to a challenge without having to ask for Government funding. “Now,

with the assistance of long-time supporters Sir Stephen Tindall, Matteo de Nora and other private donors and sponsors, we are delighted to be able to say that we are funded through to late this year,” Turner said.

A challenge had seemed unlikely even recently after chief

executive Grant Dalton told a press conference that without an immediate multi-million-dollar cash injection from taxpayers, the syndicate would be “gone by the end of the month”.

The Government contributed $36 million to Team NZ’s last campaign, which ended in an

8-9 loss to Oracle in the closest America’s Cup in history.

“The team has been working towards this moment almost since the day of the last race in San Francisco,” Dalton said.

“The funding support for the team that has coalesced over the past week means we can contin-

ue the design and engineering development, and keep racing, until main sponsorship funds begin to flow.

“To avoid falling behind the opposition, our design and engineering team has been working on the software tools they will need for the challenge.” - APNZ
