Time for change in numbers – councillors

Action is urgently required on the Allens Road Chinese settlement but it is coming down to a race against time and affordability.

Funding now urgent for Chinese settlement work

It could be a race between the elements and available funds for the future of the remaining buildings in Ashburton’s Chinese Settlement.

In 2013 the Ashburton District Council became stewards of the Allens Road site and its cluster of elderly buildings.

These were built and occupied

by Chinese immigrants who settled in Ashburton and established a market garden.

The project, however, is likely to come with a hefty price tag and while some money has been set aside by the council, the total amount needed to meet the council’s agreement with the early settlers’ descendants is still unclear. What

is clear is that the project falls into the urgent basket.

Village working group chairman Leen Braam believes the council is caught between its commitment to restore the properties and the cost of restoring and preserving buildings that were never built to be preserved.

There was no question the council was committed to honouring its agreement with the settlers’ families, he said, but it could become a race against time and affordability when it came to ensuring the best of the settlement was preserved and protected.

A prioritised and staged programme of work has been proposed and while some funds are available now, a sig-

“The council made a deal with the families and I’d like to make sure we honour this but we have to be realistic about what we spend.

“We want to honour our early Chinese settlers but we don’t have to rebuild or gold plate the settlement.”

If approval is given today urgent stage one work on the site will get under way and the working group will then look at its funding options for the completion of a staged restoration programme.

There was an urgent need to safeguard the site, Braam said, and he is hoping his fellow councillors will agree to sign off on a $45,000 spend at today’s finance and business support meeting.

From that point it would be a matter of balancing the need for restoration of other buildings against the cost of doing this work, he said.

“We want to take off the parts we have to dismantle and then preserve the parts we want to keep and we do need to move quickly with this. We’re trying to preserve as much as we can but we’re also being realistic.”

“I think it would be easier to work with a smaller number; the decision-making process would be a little less fraught and divided. Hopefully with fewer people, the top candidates would be the best candidates.”

Council staff did a tremendous amount of preparation work for council meetings, therefore councillors had all the information needed for discussion and decisions. And that meant the workload for a reduced number of councillors should not increase significantly, he said.

McLeod does not see fewer councillors affecting representation of all sectors.

“Councillors should represent the interests of the whole community.”

Long-serving councillor John Leadley is also an advocate for change; nine is the appropriate number, he said.

“Nine means people will be there for the right reasons, a passion for the community, but with nine, you can’t carry passengers, you want people who have the courage of their convictions.”

Like McLeod and Nelson, Leadley does not see a reduced number affecting representation.

“It’s a big-picture job; you don’t do this for a single issue.”

Retired councillors might favour change, but when the representation review was discussed earlier this year, three councillors – Selwyn Price, Thelma Bell and Mark Malcolm – wanted the status quo to remain.

The council is required to review its councillor numbers every six years and when the proposal to reduce numbers was publicly notified, 33 submissions were received from the community.

Twenty-two supported change while 11 did not. Reduced representation was the main reason given for opposing change.

The reduced number of councillors would see five in the urban ward and two each in the eastern and western wards. Minor ward boundary adjustments will be required.

The public have made their choice

When a wild rabbit wandered into the Harper’s property two and a half years ago, it likely had no idea it would become the subject of an award winning artwork.

But “Hamish”, now a happy resident in artist Lisa Harper’s home, has had his handsome, whiskered face enshrined on canvas and admired by hundreds of visitors to the Ashburton Art Gallery.

The painting is part of the Ashburton Society of Arts 54th Annual Exhibition – and the official winner of the People’s Choice Award after around 1000 votes were counted.

A thrilled Harper collected her prize yesterday.

She said she has been painting since she was a teenager, but is relatively new to depicting animals.

Many will know her for her funky building and house paintings, which she used to do on commission for a number of Ashburton residents, she said.

She has only recently returned to painting after spending eight years in Wellington working in the fash-

ion industry, and the idea of painting Hamish jumped out at her one day.

“I guess it was his character.

I quite wanted to see that on canvas,” she said.

Despite the time consuming task of painting the fur, she said she now wants to paint a few more animals, including a mouse.

She is also eyeing up the idea of an exhibition, perhaps with fellow artists from the Ashburton Society of Arts.

Hamish had not sold in the exhibition, which Harper said she was secretly a little bit pleased about.

“I’ll probably put it up at home,” she said.

Prize sponsor Pauline Mead said Harper’s work had appealed to young and old alike, and been a number of votes ahead of any other pieces in the exhibition.

“You can have all the judges in the world, but this is the one the people chose, and that says something,” she said.

The Ashburton Society of Arts 54th Annual Exhibition officially closes on Friday at 4pm after nearly a month at the gallery.

Town green’s oaks to be treated with kid gloves Special care will be taken with the English oaks on the East Street green when the town’s central business district is revamped.

East Street will remain two-way but motorists will have to obey a 30km/h speed limit when the work is complete. Tancred and Burnett Streets will be converted to one-way traffic with angle parking and it is likely the project will be carried out in street-by-street

stages. The Ashburton District Council enlisted the help of a tree specialist to assess trees in the CBD prior to the streetscape renewal.

Consultant Brad Cadwallader said the large majority of the English oaks on the green were in very good condition. The trees were thought to date back to the 1900s.

“In my view they are a very fine collection of trees and make

a significant contribution to the amenity of the CBD.” Other trees, like the seven Chinese elms near the Arcade entrance on Burnett Street were not worth keeping because of wind damage and poor structural form.

Most of the trees in the redevelopment area were around 30 years old and in raised cement gardens.

There was clear evidence of their growth with displacement of

kerbs and pavers, his report said.

Aside from the Chinese elms, the remaining trees were mostly healthy and worth keeping.

Cadwallader said great care was needed around the English oaks if the path on the green was to be widened.

“One of the greatest risks that these trees may be exposed to is general construction activity that may spill onto the town green

from adjacent road and construction works. It will be very important to fence off the soft berm area to ensure it is not used to store materials and park or operate equipment on it, even temporarily.”

He said the importance of trees in urban design was well established and created a positive effect on the general wellbeing of people using the area.

Fewer kea sightings ‘worrying’

Almost seven weeks into the ski season the first kea has been sighted at Mt Hutt.

The beloved alpine parrot and New Zealand Bird of the Year has been noticeably absent from the skifield this season in what conservationists say is “definitely a concern”.

Just a decade ago, it was not uncommon to see 20 of the cheeky birds in the carpark and by June last year, three kea had settled into the skifield.

But this year – until late last week – staff and guests had seen none of the endangered birds.

“It had been quite disappointing – so it when the first one was spotted it was quite a moment,” Ski Area Manager James Mackenzie said.

Virgin Mile observed a juvenile male watching her from 25 metres away, prompting a “whole lot of excitement” among staff.

Mackenzie said the birds are real characters and almost part of the furniture at Mt Hutt – even despite their tendency for destruction.

He said staff were crossing their fingers that where there’s one, there’s more.

But Kea Sightings Project cofounder Mark Brabyn said he thought it was unlikely too many more kea would be settling in for the rest of the season, given Mt Hutt’s relative isolation from the rest of the Southern Alps.

Mt Hutt was not the only skifield to notice a lack of kea this year, he said.

“I think most skifields have noticed a lot less … and we’re a bit worried.”

The Kea Sightings Project help run the Kea Database, a website where people can report their sightings of the birds and help conservationists understand population patterns.

Mt Hutt help to advertise the database and also raise up to $1000 each year for the Kea Conservation Trust through donation boxes at all their retail premises.

Introduced predators like rats and stoats are one of the key threats to kea populations.

While Mt Hutt have previously run their own sustainability projects, they were hoping to work more closely with the Department of Conservation in the future to “deal to the pest problem,” Mackenzie said.

“We like to see any activities that help kea in this area,” he said.

Quake-prone buildings Accountant removed identified next month from institute’s ■ CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS

It’s been a long wait, but next month the earthquake-prone status of 148 Ashburton buildings will be a matter of public record.

From August 1, owners of buildings in the earthquake-prone category will receive placards from the Ashburton District Council that must be displayed on or adjacent to those buildings. The owners will also receive a letter explaining what is required in terms of either providing engineering reports or repairing or demolishing those buildings.

Council building services manager Michael Wong said it had been a long process reaching this point as the placard design had been delayed several times by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE).

The placards will spell out to the public the status of a building and will give the date when strength-

About 60 buildings will have placards stating that no engineering assessment has been completed, or if it has, the details have yet to be supplied to the council.

The remaining 80 odd will have placards confirming the percentage they comply with the building code.

Buildings with unreinforced masonry must be brought up to standard within 12-and-a-half years. Often the issue for these buildings will be a verandah or parapet. Owners of the other buildings will have 25 years to car-

“Those placards must be displayed where they can be seen, but the reality is, the building will be no more dangerous than it is today, it’s just that people will know its status; instead of just a private letter, the status becomes public knowledge,” Wong said.

Information on all earthquakeprone buildings in the Ashburton District will become part of a publicly accessible national data base.

Christchurch trialled the placard notification system and about 600 of the city’s buildings are currently on the register.

The committee also ordered that its decision should be published in the Ashburton Guardian, to protect the interests of the public.

The PCC decided that Milne was a potential risk to current and future employers, clients and/or community organisations.

She has recently been employed by another chartered accounting firm but it is unclear whether she has clients for whom she manages client monies and may have access to their funds.

Publication of the PCC’s findings was also to make clear that the disciplinary process of the institute operated effectively and transparently.

The misappropriation of funds was found not to be an isolated incident, but had begun within months of Milne starting her employment.

It had continued until the behaviour was identified.

Power bills crippling for many locals

Mid Canterbury residents are struggling to cope with crippling power bills this winter, say the Salvation Army.

Local frontline staff have reported an “alarming” number of people going without heating or other necessities as their power bills more than double.

Major Mike Allwright said staff had seen people from “right across the board” suffering, but it was the elderly in particular who weren’t asking for help.

The new winter energy payment for pensioners was definitely helping, but it wasn’t quite enough for some people, he said.

“If you’ve got a Gold Card you get $20 a week for power – but if your power has doubled in a month then it might not cover that.”

To deal with the cost of power, people were either living in the cold or cutting costs on essentials like food, he said.

The Salvation Army were appealing to the public for donations of blankets, which can be dropped off at the church on Cass Street or at the Community Ministries Centre opposite.

The Salvation Army has recently

completed a nationwide survey to measure how tough life was for Kiwis in winter and the very alarming results were published on Monday.

More than half of survey respondents said they had gone without heating in the past year, while around one in four said they avoid buying fresh produce because of the cost.

Forty-four per cent of respondents hadn’t gone to the doctor in the last year when they or a member of their family were sick, because they were unable to afford it – and 39 per cent said they could only afford to buy enough to get through the day when funds were tight.

When it came to demand at the Ashburton foodbank, Community Ministries co-ordinator Judith Lilley said things had been relatively steady.

“Things are just ticking along … and we’re able to meet that demand thanks to the generosity of the public,” she said.

She said hardship was often a little bit worse up north, but she had noticed a proportion of Mid Cantabrians were struggling and grappling with the extra expenses of winter.

Drivers have had a temporary reprieve from delays and detours in the Rakaia Gorge, as work is undertaken to strengthen one of the bridges.

The repair of Rakaia Gorge Bridge No. 1 is progressing well, NZTA Network Manager Jessica McFarlane reported, but the night closures – originally scheduled to take place for four weeks from July 15 – have been temporarily put on hold as new

material is ordered.

“The nature of the bridge structure means that we’re only able to determine whether or not some of the existing material from the bridge can be re-used after the material has been removed and we can have a close look at its condition,” she said.

“This means we’re ordering some new material as the work is carried out.”

Night shift work with full bridge closures will resume Sunday July 29, but before then she

said drivers could still expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the day.

Day shift work is being carried out from Monday to Friday.

Work on the bridge is also very weather dependent, and closure times may vary due to this, McFarlane advised.

The work will see the bridge deck replaced, the handrail refurbished and structural elements seismically re-strengthened among other minor safety improvements.

A figure of $1.2 million has been set aside for the project, which will be carried out by Downer and Opus, under the monitoring and guidance by heritage conservationists.

NZTA advised the work will take until near the end of August.

A teenage tourist was rescued after spending two days stranded on a New Zealand mountain. The 19-year-old called police from Mount Atkinson in the Tararua Crossing on Sunday afternoon after getting stuck in bad weather.

Search and Rescue successfully reached him by helicopter Tuesday morning. Initially SAR wasn’t able to reach the man due to high winds, sleet and dropping temperatures.

Gate safety warning WorkSafe has issued a safety alert around automated gates after a child was nearly crushed to death at the Auckland Botanic Gardens in 2016. A 7-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he was trapped between a rock wall and the heavy gate, but has since fully recovered. The workplace regulator suggested businesses make safety changes that would cost around $2150 to install, but prevent similar incidents from occurring.

The child became stuck after the gate started to open when a car activated it via sensor loops under the tar seal. The child was pulled into the space between the wall and the bars of the gate and was subsequently crushed.

Dam bursts, rescue on Rescuers were searching yesterday for villagers left missing when part of a newly built hydroelectric dam was breached in southeastern Laos, flooding the surrounding countryside.

SK Engineering & Construction, one of two South Korean partners in the project, said in a statement that the top of one of five auxiliary earth-fill dams at the project “got swept away” on Sunday night after heavy rains.

But Korea Western Power, which was due to operate the hydroelectric power plant after its completion, said problems first emerged Friday when workers discovered the dam’s centre had sunk by 11 centimeters.

Repair work for the earth-fill dam was hampered by heavy rain, and damage worsened on Monday, causing water to overflow and flood seven out of 12 villages in the area, SK E&C said. It was helping to evacuate and rescue residents while also trying to contain further damage.

The cascade of 5 billion cubic metres from the collapse left more than 6600 people homeless, the official Lao news agency KPL said.

The number of victims was unclear. KPL had said hundreds of people were missing, without providing details. More

The website of the state-run Vientiane Times newspaper reported Wednesday two confirmed deaths. The government declared the area a disaster zone and top officials were rushing to the site, it said.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed people sitting on rooftops to escape the surging water, while others were carried to safety or rescued by boat. State media said

helicopters were also being used to rescue people.

Continued heavy rain and strong winds forecast for the area could hinder rescue efforts, and risks from flooding persisted in the mountainous region.

Provincial authorities issued a call for emergency aid – clothing, food, drinking water, medicine, cash and other items – from the “party, government organisations, business community, officials, police and

military forces and people of all strata.”

The International Red Cross said food was a concern because village food supplies were drenched in the flooding.

It was arranging for water purification units to be sent to the area to ensure supplies of clean drinking water.

The presidential office in South Korea said President Moon Jae-in had ordered an emergency relief team to help with the disaster.

Rescue crews search for missing in wildfires Rescue crews were searching through charred homes and cars yesterday for those still missing after the deadliest wildfires to hit Greece in decades decimated seaside areas near Athens, killing at least 74 people and sending thousands fleeing.

There was no official indication as to how many people might be missing, and some took to social media and Greek television stations with appeals for information on their loved ones. The death toll was expected to increase as crews searched more of the areas affected by the fires.

More than 280 firefighters were still in the area to the northeast of Athens in the wider Rafina area, dousing the remaining flames to prevent flare-ups. A further 200 firefighters backed up by

Kiriazova said they doused their house in the Mati area near Rafina with water from a garden hose, and credited the fact that their window frames were metal instead of wood for their home being spared.

One prison escapee still on the run in WA A West Australian prison escapee remains on the run after a mass breakout during a riot that saw fires lit and guards pepper-sprayed.

Police initially believed 12 men had escaped from Greenough Regional Prison near Geraldton in WA’s Mid West on Tuesday afternoon but later

said 10 had fled the jail.

Nine prisoners have been recaptured but Bradley Silvester, 35, remains at large.

After seven were found in the area, Brendan Bartley, 22, and 18-year-old Darryl Councillor handed themselves in at the local police station.

It is believed inmates scaled

a perimeter fence about 4.15pm when prison officers went to extinguish a cell fire and “lost control of part of the prison”, Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall told The West Australian.

“Then there were a couple of other fires lit in the prison,” he said.

“They broke into some staff offices, got some equipment and used that to cause some damage.

“From the information I have, they got some equipment and scaled the perimeter fence.”

Three guards were peppersprayed.

The promotion, called Scream Comes Home, is being organised by Anthony Masi and Nate Ragon, TMZ reported. The event – which has a $NZ294 admission fee – is slated to be held at the abode (which sits outside of Santa Rosa, California) the weekend before Halloween, according to the outlet. A special offering to fans to spend the night there for $NZ2,575 sold out rapidly, TMZ reported.

Lovato now stable Demi Lovato is “stable” and recovering in hospital in Los Angeles after being found unconscious at her Hollywood Hills home allegedly as the result of an overdose.

The singer was transported to an undisclosed medical facility after friends called 911. A law enforcement source confirmed she was given Narcan when she was found, a medication that’s used to try and reverse an opioid overdose.

While it’s been speculated that Lovato overdosed on heroin, TMZ later reported that the star had refused to disclose to paramedics what she had taken and that no drugs were found at her home.

Taika’s Aussie message Taika Waititi has taken quite a dig at Australia in a message promoting The Breaker Upperers. Taika was a producer on the film made by Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek, which is hitting Aussie screens for the first time this week. So being a good mate, Taika got on Twitter to tell his Aussie fans to go see it, but he also slipped in a little trans-Tasman jab.

“Go and see this film ... it’s gonna make you feel so good,” he says. “It’s gonna make you feel good like all the other things that we gave to you, like pavlova and Phar Lap and Russell Crowe. Enjoy.

Councillors face a tough decision

I

t must be a tough gig sometimes being a councillor.

Not only the huge amount of public pressure and expectation that you must deliver what is best for your constituents, but also dealing with some rather large decisions that might not only impact on the community, but also themselves.

We probably don’t give those who sit around the table enough credit at times.

There’s a wide range of people currently serving from a wide range of varying fields of expertise. That’s one of the things that bodes us so well as a district – the diversity of what is offered by those making key decisions.

But the question is – and it’s one which will be answered this morning in the council chambers – how many is too many?

Are 12 councillors the required number for the Ashburton District, or will we be better served by having nine councillors in the future?

Should the decision this morning be to decrease to nine, there

will be a few sitting around the table who might start to shuffle slightly awkwardly in their seats – their future within the council all of a sudden looking slightly less certain than when they walked in.

Should we lose three seats when the next election rolls around – there’s no doubting there will be benefits, but there’s equally as many negative permutations to come from it as well – and the list of submissions, available on the Ashburton District Council website for reading certainly confirms that.

There’s a strong flavour among those submissions that fewer councillors will give a much

stronger approach to decision making with fewer opinions and views and a common theme has always been the decrease in the likelihood of “teams” being formed around the council table too.

Negatively a lot of people commented on the loss of diversity and skillsets that a wider range of councillors provide and also whether the growing population of the Ashburton District will be well represented by just nine councillors in the future.

Either way, the decision will most likely have little to no impact on ratepayers around the district – in fact, we’ll be lucky if we even notice it should it be

decided this morning.

Whether there are nine or 12 players around the table, the key decisions are still going to be made.

Our rates will rise and fall (occasionally) and those elected will fight the good fight for the people of this district and we will be none the wiser than what we already are now with 12 elected councillors.

It will be a tough decision for some to make this morning, some a lot tougher than others.

But then again, most decisions made face exactly the same questions every week, this one just seems to be a little more important.

Disabilities Act. In 2006, in a dramatic turnaround from her first murder trial, Andrea Yates was found not guilty by reason of insanity by a Houston jury in the bathtub drownings of her five children; she was committed to a state mental hospital. (Yates had initially been found guilty of murder, but had her conviction overturned.)

In 2016, Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for president by a major political party at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Ten years ago: At least 22 small bombs exploded in Ahmadabad in the Indian state of Gujarat, killing 58 people.

Five years ago: Ariel Castro, the

man who’d imprisoned three women in his Cleveland home, subjecting them to a decade of rapes and beatings, pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal to avoid the death penalty.

(Castro later committed suicide in prison.) A gunman went on a rampage at a Hialeah, Florida, apartment complex, killing six people before being shot dead by police.

One year ago: President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he will not “accept or allow” transgender people to serve in the US military. (The pronouncement was blocked by legal challenges, and the Pentagon began allowing transgender recruits to seek enlistment on January 1.)

shburton has an incredible, genuine community spirit.

We are eager to help our neighbours in a crisis or when they are in need, and support a variety of community initiatives that amplify our abilities to do just that.

Many of these initiatives are powered by a loyal core of volunteers, who often work tirelessly behind the scenes to deliver for Mid Canterbury and to them I again want to say thank you.

Volunteers truly are the heart of our community.

I was honoured to help launch the Welcoming Communities Plan earlier this month.

It was wonderful to meet and talk with migrants who now call Ashburton home. People who have loved what they have found here so much they now want to create their futures here and positively contribute to the fabric of our environment.

The work that Welcoming Communities does to champion inclusiveness, respect and acceptance is vital in rolling out this welcome mat.

Ilana and her team are setting up a futsal tournament, which I am sure will be popular, and I’m looking forward to having a wee game myself. If you too are new

The Farming Family Day at the Races was a fantastic way to bring fun and provide a brief escape to our rural families dealing with the stresses of farming life and mycoplasma bovis.

I jumped at the chance to volunteer as chief photographer and speak with so many people about what the day meant to them.

Hearing how they appreciated the effort that went into making the day a success was magic.

It was heart-warming to see so many local people and businesses sponsoring prizes and food, and it is my hope it will become an annual event.

Mycoplasma bovis is having a devastating effect on our local farmers, their children and wider families. That’s why I am proud

of how our town is continuing to help and support them through these times.

The mental health of our farming community is constantly on my mind. I am grateful for services like the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust who similarly back our farmers and strengthen their ability to cope and get through.

This Government is making mental health a priority for all New Zealanders. We launched the inquiry into Kiwi mental health back in January, set to deliver a fairer, more accessible mental health system, one that provides support where it’s needed most – especially for our future generations.

Removing the barriers young people face getting help to deal with adult issues earlier in life cannot happen fast enough.

Three-quarters of all lifetime

cases of mental illness start before 25 years of age, but often young New Zealanders can’t afford to access help or don’t know where to turn.

We need to make a difference.

One in six New Zealanders have faced the challenge of a mental health disorder, from depression to severe anxiety. One in six.

Mental health isn’t just a health issue. Mental Health is its own issue and we finally have a Government ready to treat it as exactly that.

acky” Winston Peters, Acting Prime Minister of New Zealand, and its sometime Foreign Minister, plumbed the depths of media relationships earlier this week with a display of arrogant intransigence sufficient to curl your toes and throw up your hands in despair.

Not unreasonably, the media was asking him what he thought of the president of the United States’ latest outburst of Twitter tosh in which he threatened Iran with the fires of Sodom and Gomorrah – and then some – should it ever again “cast stones” (or even aspersions) at America.

However, our – by a twist of malign fate – Acting PM, while our real PM – the blessed Jacinda Ardern – is absent on maternity leave, chose to quibble with the ladies and gentlemen of the press as to whether or not the wouldbe apocalyptic President had actually said that of which he stood accused. He – Mr Peters –

was not going to believe Trump’s words without further corroboration from elsewhere and/or he had had time to read them for himself.

All this, despite the media present having thoughtfully given him a transcript of what the evil Trump had actually spouted.

That significant events of this importance should, to a greater or lesser extent, be trivialised in this way by the man who currently represents New Zealand on the world stage, simply adds confirmation to those who think of our country as a charming backwater to be taken seriously only when the All Blacks enter the stadium.

The sooner the First Bloke takes

over his baby-caring commitment and Jacinda can hurry back to her desk on the ninth floor of the Beehive, the better.

Then, “Wacky” Winston can be posted on a possibly suicidal mission to the outer reaches of, say, Guatemala.

Only then will really get to appreciate the intricacies of modern foreign ministering.

Blade shearers aim for world records New Zealand blade shearer Allan Oldfield is considering a world record attempt after helping an Irishman to one of the biggest one-day tallies ever shorn with the clippers.

Allan Oldfield, of Geraldine, was on-hand for every one of the 326 sheep shorn by 28-year-old Ireland international Peter Heraty in nine hours to establish an Irish record at Heraty’s home in Owenwee, Co Mayo, recently.

The sheep – mainly his own mayo blackface ewes, hoggets and two-year-olds – had an average wool weight of 1.67kg of wool per sheep in a pre-record shear of 10 sheep. The tally was 73 more than his previous best, in an eight-hour day on the same sheep last year.

The World Sheep Shearing Records Society, which was not involved in his latest effort, has strongwool standards of 0.9kg for lambs and 3kg for adults sheep.

Oldfield is now investigating doing a two-stand record with Heraty, who shore 72 in the opening run of two hours followed by successive 1hr 45min runs of 65, 62, 64 and 63.

Watched closely by three judges, Heraty’s tally was 120 more than the 206 shorn by fellow Irish shearer Patrick Moran in the early 1990s, commonly accepted as a British record. Although last year Welshmen Gareth Evans and Clive Hamer did a combined tally of 397 lambs in nine hours at Fernhill in Somerset, England.

The efforts compare with the 353 perendale lambs shorn by New Zealand shearer Peter Casserly at Mt Somers on February 13, 1976, and the 308 romney-border cross lambs shorn by Bruce Davidson at Hanmer Springs on December 12, 1973.

It also compares with the 321 shorn in 7hrs 40min by the legendary 19th century Australian shearer Jack Howe at Alice Downs, Blackall, Western Queensland, on October 10, 1892, still the biggest blades tally recorded in Australia and one which was not beaten by a machine shearer in Australia until 57 years later.

Heraty had learned to shear with the blades by the time he was seven or eight years old, from his father who he says is “a great blade shearer”.

He won the All Ireland Handshearing Championship for the first time in 2012, at the age of 22, using the Shear Sharp gear he bought in New Zealand. He’s since won the title five times in a row.

In Ireland for a fortnight helping prepare, Oldfield was at Heraty’s side throughout, timing sheep to keep the hopeful gun on target, and said later: “It was great. Peter was going hard, but he was knack-

ered at the end.”

Heraty said this week: “I was very surprised. I was no more tired the next day than any other working day, but I was very tired the night of it.”

About 80 per cent of his shearing is with a machine handpiece, but blade shearing seems likely to endure for a while yet.

“Some hill farmers over here are set in their ways and won’t change to machine shearing at this stage,” he said.

Oldfield was quickly into action of his own, heading for Wales where he won the Royal Welsh Show’s Open blades title on Monday.

Six-monthly lambing a reality on Canterbury farm

The sheep industry has grappled with the idea of six-monthly lambing for many years, but Anne and Alan Reid are showing that it can be done.

The Oxford couple has proven that with the right mix of genetics, feed and management they can get two crops of lambs in the same year, year-on-year.

The Reids farm 228ha of flat and terraced country near Oxford, running 1200 crossbred ewes and 400 to 500 hoggets. In what is a flexible farm policy, they also trade around 100 cattle and grow various cash crops depending on market returns.

Anne describes them as being rubber band farmers, in that they have the flexibility to change their policies in response to market dynamics and economic returns.

Tucked into the foothills, they enjoy a micro-climate with higher rainfall than farms further east on the Canterbury Plains and their proximity to the Waimakariri River minimises the number of frosts they experience over winter.

This means they have security around feed supply all year round which allows them to push the boundaries with livestock performance.

Anne, a chef by trade, has a deep interest and knowledge of nutrition – both human and animal – and this is reflected in the mixed, legume-rich pastures and forages they grow to drive stock performance, including sheep.

They began six-monthly lambing in 2010 with a small number of older crossbred ewes. They decided to give it a go after a conversation at a processor meeting about

increasing the return on investment in their ewe flock.

All of the ewes in the couple’s back-tolambing system are older ewes and many are producing multiples.

The Reids are trialling finn genetics in their flock to help drive fertility and fine down their wool, and down the track they are hoping to stabilise their genetics.

“It’s all a matter of eye. At the moment we have sheep I don’t particularly like the look of, but they are producing and that’s the most important thing at this stage,” says Alan.

The couple uses ram lambs in the sixmonth lambing system as they have found these testosterone-fuelled teenagers are more virile than older rams. They pick the eyes of the autumn born lambs and these are retained for breeding, the balance is sold prime (22-23kg) as new-season lambs in October.

Anne says to avoid in-breeding she keeps a complex breeding chart and brings in clean lines where required.

Importantly the couple has the feed to make the system work and Alan says despite the fact that these ewes are lambing every six months, they have more of an issue with ewes getting too fat than struggling to get condition on them.

Financially, the six-month lambing outstrips dairy support and they say the extra lambs they produce are worth the equivalent to grazing 100 dairy heifers (depending on the season) – without the damage to soil and infrastructure.

“It’s all about dollars,” says Anne.

Celebrating good farming practice Mid Canterbury farming leaders joined Environment Canterbury and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor at Lincoln yesterday to help them celebrate good farming practice.

O’Connor said the Government had laid down clear bottom lines on water quality and welcomed the increased awareness and huge amount of mitigation taking place.

“Farming in tune with the environment shows consumers that their food is produced by people who care and forms part of the social licence that allows landowners to operate,” he said.

Invited guests at the Good Management Practice (GMP) showcase included members of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, who held their monthly meeting at Lincoln in conjunction with the event.

Committee member and Federated Farmers national board member Chris Allen was also a guest speaker.

ECan councillor Tom Lambie said the GMP “journey” started in Canterbury some years ago and was marketed at national level by the launch in June of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan for Water Quality.

“Now is a good time to take stock and recognise just how far we’ve come,” Lambie said. “It is four years since Industry Agreed Good Management Practices Relating to Water Quality were introduced by the primary sectors in Canterbury with a view to national adoption.”

The Canterbury journey was illustrated yesterday by a visit to an inter-generational dairy farm near Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere where innovation and sustainable management have led to an impressive value-added story, and a series of presentations.

Lambie, who chaired the original group that guided the work informing the Good Management Practices each sector developed, said all the key elements of the journey were on show – continuous improvement, targeted rules and smarter tools.

Lambie said collaboration, the work of water zone committees and good environmental practice by farmers was paying off.

There were now more than 3000 farm environment plans throughout the region with nitrogen loss limits set in consents.

Government’s Minister for Agriculture, Damien O’Connor (above, second from right) was in Canterbury this week to celebrate and view the successful progress made in the region in farming management. O’Connor was part of a group which included farming leaders that visited a major farming operation in Leeston.

The visit was all about recognising the leaps and bounds that have been made in good farming practices. The group also visited a dairy farm near Lake Ellesmere and a series of presentations at the Lincoln Events Centre.

Nude cleaning business slammed by councillor

By Alexis CArey A local councillor has unleashed a scathing attack on a nude cleaning company – but the founder insists no laws are being broken.

Last week, Gold Coast councillor Dawn Crichlow slammed the Bare All Cleaning Service on air during an interview on Gold FM. She described the business, which employs a range of male and female cleaners to carry out household duties for customers either in the nude or while wearing very little, as “absolutely disgraceful”.

“That is wrong, that is wrong, that is wrong,” she said on the programme.

“Hello, they are not cleaning,” Crichlow said after it was revealed clients were charged $90 per hour for a bikini-clad cleaner or $A149 ($162.53) for total nudity.

Crichlow had also made similar criticisms during an interview with the Gold Coast Bulletin, in which she questioned the legality of the company.

“Is this even legal, do the police know?” she asked the publication.

“These people are ruining their lives by setting up a reputation such as a naked cleaner – go and

get a real job … It’s absolutely disgraceful and the Gold Coast doesn’t need that.”

But founder Brett Jones, who launched the business around three months ago in Queensland, hit back at Crichlow’s claims, telling news.com.au the comments were “completely out of line”.

“She has no idea what the business is about – it’s not a sex service,” he said.

“She’s tried to pigeonhole us by mentioning brothels and massage parlours when actually we’re nothing like that – all we do is run a cleaning business with the point of difference that people get paid a whole lot more to wear a whole lot less.

“Councillor Crichlow has made all these comments without actually understanding what the business is and in some ways it has been defamatory and has cast aspersions on what we do – but we’re not a sex service; I can’t stress that enough.”

“It’s designed so chores aren’t boring and it gives us a point of difference in the very crowded cleaning environment,” he said.

And it seems that point of difference is paying off – this week, the

business has expanded into the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and Jones said it would also be rolled out into Perth and Adelaide within the next three months, with staff numbers expected to surge from 50 to 150.

Jones said Crichlow’s comments had been “very hurtful” to staff members and insisted the operation was entirely legal.

“We are not breaking any laws and we’re not doing anything wrong by anyone – once again, we’re not a sex service, so we’re not breaking any laws,” he said.

Jones said the company had received 96 bookings from customers from Crichlow’s electorate alone, which showed she was “out of touch with her constituents”.

The company’s website explains: “Our cleaners are very professional. They won’t get upset and will understand your reaction to a nude female’s body. However, you should respect them and their personal space. We do not represent or provide sexual services and our nude and full-clothed cleaning services should not be treated as a sexual experience.”

Better access to the United States for New Zealand businesspeople and investors is a step closer after Congress passed legislation that would allow Kiwis to apply for special visas.

The Knowledgeable Innovators and Worthy Investors Act (Kiwi Act), which now just needs the signature of US President Donald Trump to pass it into law, means eligible New Zealanders can enter the US on E-1 and E-2 visas.

Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said the passage of the legislation through Congress this week was a major step.

“The United States is a key strategic partner for New Zealand. If approved, these visas would improve access to the US for New Zealand businesspeople and investors, further developing our trading relationship to the benefit of both countries,” Peters said.

New Zealand-United States Council chairman Leon Grice said New Zealand exporters and entre-

preneurs had been calling for better visa access to the US for many years.

“New Zealand exporters and entrepreneurs have incurred significant immigration legal costs in the past building their business in the US and this act lowers the barriers to their success in the US market.”

The council credited the New Zealand Embassy in Washington DC for its long-standing lobbying, and US Ambassador Scott Brown in Wellington, for the success of the campaign.

“It is a good day for the NZ-US bilateral relationship,” Grice said.

■ Lamb: Cut the lamb shoulder into large 5-6cm chunks.

■ Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. When hot, season the lamb with salt and pepper, then fry in 2-3 batches until browned all over. Transfer to a casserole dish.

■ Reduce the heat to medium, add the butter and a splash of oil along with the onion, celery, capsicum and kumara. Cook, stirring, for about 10 minutes until everything is soft and starting to caramelise. Add the garlic and rosemary and cook for another couple of minutes.

■ Add the stock, tomato paste, lemon juice and zest and anchovies (if using) and stir to combine. Pour over the lamb and mix gently to combine. Cover the dish with a lid (or 2 layers of tinfoil) and bake in the oven for 3

1/2 to 4 hours. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Stir through the spinach and cornflour mixture. Taste and season as required. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C fan bake (220°C conventional).

■ To assemble: Line 4-6 greased small pie dishes (or one large dish) with pastry. Add the filling, brush the bottom pastry edges with some of the egg, cover with a pastry lid and press to seal.

Brush the top with egg and cut a couple of air holes. Bake in the lower half of the oven for 20-30 minutes, or until the pastry is dark golden brown and cooked through.

■ To serve: Serve with a salad and tomato relish or chutney.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club Alan Andrews sure made us want to come in, as he played song after song for us at our July club night.

Our brand spanking new president welcomed all. I can see John is going to be as good a president as those he has followed.

By the way, he is looking for another tea chest and a longer than usual copper stick, for another bass for our skiffle group.

Yours truly put the programme together, and they didn’t let me down.

I enjoyed every minute of it, the songs, the singing, and the Irish jokes.

What a wonderful lot they are, and that’s only a quarter of our talent.

Thank you Ocean for the time you gave us. You sure have come a long way from when you came on my program a few years back.

Also Lorraine, for the really funny jokes. (they now seem to slip into our programmes, and we look forward to the loads of laughs they bring.

Ann, well I could have listened all night. I loved the “chopsticks kind of” (yes that was the title.) This version was only written in 2018, but the original was actually penned in 1887 to celebrate what was originally the “chop waltze” Go Google.

Then there was Irene. I loved it. She gave us a song she’d played at an accordion group she belonged to at age 17. And it sounded so advanced. We are fortunate indeed to have her as one of our members.

The singing group (all 13 plus Audrey) were supposed to come back for a second bracket, but we ran out of time, more’s the pity. Thank you guys….

And Bernard, well, there he was following the old music score like a real pro. We are so used to Bernie belting out the toe tappies for our accordion group we seldom hear him play something ‘un-Bernie-ish) and they were lovely tunes. “When you wish upon a star” was really well done, and he finished off with a rousing march bracket.

Ashburton Golf Club A beautiful weekend saw many golfers down at the Brandon, which was great to see. Rumours have been abound recently about the early morning “Frostie” golfers picking up all the prizes. Are they playing the full course? Are they using underhand scoring techniques?

So as any decent investigative journalist would do.

I turned up unannounced last Saturday, before the sun was even over the horizon. Now firstly, why any reasonable golfer would even contemplate playing at that ungodly hour, without at least having a beer first, just beggars belief.

Still, I teed off down the first like an elegant mirror image of Sir Bob Charles, looking up, as the rising sun just peeped over the trees, burnt my retinas to a crisp and played the rest of the hole like Ray Charles. Triple bogey to start. Oh what joy!

These Frostie boys certainly play a quick game, I think Lefty and Bruce need to stick to afternoons or they could get lapped. I had great fun with the boys, made me very welcome, as they always do, and for the record every hole played and every shot counted, obviously just very good golfers. See you again soon boys. Well maybe in the spring.

In the club champs qualifying, young Josh Ackerley announced his arrival into the Seniors grade with a very strong 78 to pick up Radius Care player of the day and 12 RMF cup points. Phil Kerr and Peter Walker also had good rounds to jump to the top of the RMF table with 45 and 39 points respectively.

This Saturday we have Matts Pro Shop Day, open to all, $10 entry and lots of great prizes. Get on down and support Matt, he does a wonderful job for the club.

Run and Walk Ashburton A group of six met on the evening of Tuesday July 17 and completed an 8km town run, good pace and good company made the time fly by. We will be returning to sprint sessions next week.

Saturday July 21, 12 early bird runners met and enjoyed varying distances between 10–16km taking in the town for a few extra km’s before heading down the south side of the river track. We had members drive in from Peel Forest and Rakaia to join Saturday’s run! Welcome to three new runners this week. We hope you enjoyed yourself and we look forward to your company again next week. Great to see our numbers growing! Coffee was enjoyed at Columbus afterwards.

The nor’west wind had kicked in by the time the Afternoon Social Meet met at 1.30pm. The afternoon meet was hosted from Carters Terrace which made the south side river track the ideal choice for their run and walk, and also gave the necessary shelter from the wind to the 18 walkers and four runners.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed by all.

Men’s captain Brucie has selected 5/6th of a very strong team, who will travel to Rakaia on Saturday and attempt to prise the St Andrew’s shield out of their sticky little fingers. It has been around 2 years since our last challenge, so Bruce thought long and hard over the team. Ian and Gordy, presidents cup finalists were shoe ins. Terry Molloy, Watson cup winner was an easy pick.

Hoppy and new dad Terry K, mainstays of the strong Redpath squad. This team just had no weak links, until Bruce threw a major curve ball, and by passed a gaggle of great golfers in picking some useless Yorkshire muppet. Oh well on your head be it, sorry guys!

Sunday sees the Pennants teams heading around the district for their monthly pub crawl. All the results next week. Good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club The Ashburton MSA Petanque Club had 7 players take part in the Bastille Day Tournament in Christchurch on July 15. We played in the rain and Richard Browne from Ashburton and his partner Brian Westerbeek from Christchurch earned themselves a first in the plate. The other three teams played off in the Bastille Consolante doing quite well in this section.

The Silver Tray Challenge an annual event between Ashburton and Papanui was played at Papanui on July 22. We had 12 player take part in this, playing Doubles in the morning and Triples in the afternoon. While we didn’t manage to bring home the prize we did have a very enjoyable day.

Next Sunday the 19 we will be playing both our club Mens singles and the Womens singles. Entries for this close on Tuesday 24.

Canterbury Doubles and Singles on the first week end of August will be hosted by Ashburton, and entries for this are coming in very nicely with 18 teams for the Doubles so far and 27 for the singles

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club There was a smaller attendance at the July meeting of the Pakeke Lions Club. For many it was holiday time but for others the cold and wet weather was taking its toll. As July is member’s night the annual finance report was presented for approval and adoption by incoming Treasurer, Peter O’Neill. The cost structure and how the annual fees are calculated was well explained. The club’s administration is mainly funded through the monthly raffles and via the Tail Twister. The initial mid-month coffee morning to be on the third Thursday of each month was a success with a good number attending in July. The Lions centennial project is still undecided due to indecision from some quarters.

The Directors of each committee outlined their possible programmes for the year. Lion Dave Bennett outlined the Projects plans beginning with the fundraiser on Boulevard Day in September and presented an innovative idea to boost the goods for sale, assistance at the annual A&P Show, the Christmas Raffle and the Charity Market form the major fundraising events.

Lion Bob Crean‘s Programme and Social committee have put together a comprehensive list of ideas for the coming year from day outings and visits to overnight or longer trips. The year’s meeting programme was outlined indicating a full and enjoyable time catering for many interests. Speakers will come from within the club and from outside people with an interesting story to tell. The function for the Over 80’s will happen and a car trial in January is a possibility.

Derek Prebble will co-ordinate the Day Care Drivers and Les Briggs the Meals on Wheels roster.

Past President Lion Joe presented President Ron Paterson with a centennial Gold Pin for introducing new members. Lion Noel will receive his at the next meeting. Lion Dave Bennett received a Silver Award.

Tail Twister Lion Bob Rodgers did his best to add to the finances through the many fines.

The next Ladies craft morning will be held at the home of Leslie Faulkner at 17 Buckley’s Tce. On August 13 at 10am.

The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

Netherby WI As this was a lunch meeting our President Denise Clark welcomed those present including five visitors.

Grace was recited and we all enjoyed a lunch of soup, sandwiches and savouries. Following lunch we started the meeting by reciting the Aspirations. Denise then introduced Madeline Hann our Secretary’s 13 year old granddaughter to talk to us about what it is like to be a young person with Type

1 diabetes. Madeline gave a short talk and asked for questions. Several were asked and answered. We then started the formal part of our meeting. Roll Call was a gold coin for Alzheimer’s where $27.40 was collected. Happy Birthday was sung to 6 members. Once again our competitions were well supported with Jude Vaughan and Mavis Wilkins judging. Barbara Burst won both trophies. Raffle was won by Winsome Wear.

A report on Quizco held on July 6 was given. Netherby did well in the competitions.

Following the meeting we used the Project “Teach a Skill” where members were invited to watch and try some of the things that were being done. These included spinning, loom knitting. Needle felting, making book marks out of old film negatives and knitting. Those present were interested in what was on show.

Afternoon tea completed the meeting.

Winchmore Rural Women Twenty members of Winchmore Rural Women gathered together for the branch meeting on July 18 this was our monthly and Annual Meeting combined.

The members were delighted to welcome a new member to our branch Lisa Williams and we hope that Lisa will enjoy the fellowship belonging to Rural Women Winchmore brings.

The result of our Annual Meeting saw two different members taking on the two office bearer roles and we welcomed Elsa Hydes as our new President and Wilhelmina Hansen as our Vice President and we look forward to their new ideas and enthusiasm that they will bring to their roles.

Winchmore Branch had once again had a busy year and when the annual report is put together it is always amazing how much is achieved, the ever popular Ladies after 5 Dinner and the April Men’s Dinner continue to be successful and draw together those from the district to enjoy a meal and fellowship together.

The annual quiz was once again an outstanding success and allows the branch to be able to fund and assist in district activities throughout the year.

Many other activities were hosted during the year including holiday craft day for district children, district pot luck lunch, wine and cheese district night where ideas for Christmas decorations were shared along with all the interesting and varied monthly meetings.

Two of our members had achieved 50 years of marriage and as tradition in our branch Margaret Kelk and Lucille Brown were given a rose bush each to mark the occasion.

Members were encouraged to support the various upcoming Provincial Meetings and the Region 2 Canterbury Conference on August 3 with the theme Suffrage 125 “are we there yet?”

The next branch meeting will be August 15 at 7.30pm

A buoyant Beauden will be trouble

History says the Crusaders will win. Recent form says the Crusaders will win. The presence of so many All Blacks in their pack, says the Crusaders will win.

The probable inclement weather in Christchurch combined with home advantage says the Crusaders will win.

This list could go on for a while yet, but we all surely get the point that the Crusaders are strong favourites to beat the Hurricanes in Saturday’s semi-final.

Favourites to the point where a few diehard Wellingtonians aside, no one can imagine the Hurricanes winning.

But perhaps everyone is forgetting a few salient points about the Hurricanes, the most obvious being the bloke who wears their No 10 jersey.

2018 hasn’t quite happened for Beauden Barrett yet. The world’s best player hasn’t looked like the world’s best player for much, or indeed, any of this year.

When he played against the Chiefs in Hamilton two weeks ago, he didn’t look remotely like the world’s best player and may have had the worst Super Rugby game of his career.

He didn’t quite bounce back last week in the quarter-final but he was less inaccurate if still strangely reticent to take control. He looked like he was holding something back, deliberately trying to operate on the margins.

Whether that was a lack of confidence or deliberate ploy may well be answered on Saturday and the suspicion would be, it was a deliberate ploy and that we will see a more forceful, more engaged Barrett in Christchurch.

There’s no specific reason for believing this will be the case other than when it comes to world class players, you have to assume at some stage they will spark into life and typically that’s more likely to happen on the big occasion.

If a bleak winter’s night in Christchurch playing against a confident and rampant Crusaders side seems an unlikely pace for an ultra-creative running five-eighth to find himself, think back to 2016 as that is precisely what happened.

to defy all the odds and win with a bonus point to change their playoff fate.

No one fancied they could do it and yet Barrett waved his magic wand, was unpredictably brilliant and the Hurricanes won 35-10.

It was the Barrett show from there on in and his ability to control the next three games with his boot and decision-making, before blowing them open with his running, were of such quality that his rival for the All Blacks No 10. jersey, Aaron Cruden, watched on knowing his next career move would be to head to France.

The Hurricanes are two different teams.

They are so-so when Barrett isn’t quite on his game, and almost unstoppable when he

is. What happens when Barrett is exuding confidence and running from everywhere is that it fires the imagination of those around him.

If he gets into a rhythm and the game becomes more about the unstructured than the structured, then watch how TJ Perenara will suddenly make a miracle play; or how Nehe Milner-Skudder will come to life.

Jordie Barrett, too, has been a little quiet in recent weeks and it probably won’t take much more than seeing his brother running into a few holes, to bring him back to the boil.

And this is the thing with the Hurricanes, there really is a switch that goes on and off and they are so loaded with extraordinary

players with extraordinary skills, that they can have realistic expectations, albeit they will most likely not be shared by many, that they can blow the Crusaders off the park as they have previously managed.

That switch also appears to work on their defence. Last weekend against the Chiefs, they stepped that up too, seemingly aware that playoff rugby requires the most relentless, organised and disciplined defence.

That they were able to raise their intensity and accuracy is a good indicator they have the right psychological strength to put the form slump they suffered in the last round robin games behind them and head to Christchurch genuinely convinced they can win.

Premier battles to resume

Defending champions Celtic A will look to pick up where they left off when Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition returns to the court tonight.

After a two-week break due to the school holidays, both the premier one and premier two competitions return to the EA Networks Centre for week two of the third and final round of the season.

In premier one, Celtic A continued to lead the way. Unbeaten all season, Celtic A suffered a bit of a lull towards the end of the second round and were pushed by a couple of teams, but in their first game of round three they were back to their best, downing Ashburton College A 35-15.

Tonight Celtic A is due to face one of the other teams that picked up a win in the first game of the final round, Methven A. Methven A’s win over Hampstead A two weeks ago might not have been as convincing as Celtic A’s – they had to see off a Hampstead A fightback in which they managed to get back within two goals – but they started the match strong and took confidence from the fact they were able to hold Hampstead A out.

The biggest fightback the last time premier one was on court came in the game between the two sides which had this season gained promotion to the top flight. Mt Somers were automatically promoted after winning the first round of premier two, while Celtic B earned promotion for the final round with an impressive win over United A in a promotion/relegation match at the end of round two.

The two sides met in Celtic B’s first game in the top tier, and the new side looked far from out of place in premier one, racing out to an early lead against Mt Somers. Up 18-11 at half-time, Celtic B were looking good, but the experienced Mt Somers produced one of the comebacks of the sea-

Fake news according to the Super Rugby franchise. The Otago Daily Times has reported rumours of the Wallabies and Reds first-five heading south for next season.

With Lima Sopoaga heading to England, the Highlanders are on the hunt for a first five-eighth with a few miles on the clock. So far the search seems to have come up short, and the side may have to look to its young first five-eighths signed so far, namely Josh Ioane and new signing Bryn Gatland.

Sevens swapsies deal New Zealand Rugby has won its bid to retain hosting rights for a World Series Sevens event and is believed to be planning to alternate where the tournament is played between Hamilton and Fiji.

The plan, as understood by the NZ Herald, is that the 2019 event will be in Hamilton as part of the twoyear agreement reached between NZR and World Rugby in mid-2017 when the former was granted a licence to continue hosting a World Series event on the condition it no longer used Wellington as the venue. NZR is believed to have won a tender to extend its hosting licence beyond 2019 and has floated the idea of not using Hamilton as the venue every year – but instead alternating with Suva.

The young College A side are the team that Mt Somers faced in their first outing of premier one in the last round, and Mt Somers won that game by just one goal. round two of premier one.

Meanwhile Celtic B will take on Hampstead A in tonight’s other premier one match-up, with both looking to bounce back from those narrow losses a fortnight ago and get some vital points on the leaderboard.

If round two is anything to go by, even a bonus point here and there could prove vital in the lead-in to the finals. On the final night of round two, there were three teams in danger of finishing

bottom and facing the dreaded promotion/relegation match.

The team that ended up on the bottom and then lost the promotion/relegation match, United A, started their life in premier two with a resounding 42-16 win over Ashburton College B two weeks ago. Tonight they are set to take on Celtic C, while Ashburton College B side faces Rakaia A. The night’s other premier two match would see Methven B take on Southern A.

Burling, Tuke confirm Olympic, AC campaign Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have confirmed their intention to try to win another gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as well as being part of Emirates Team New Zealand’s defence of the America’s Cup. Burling and Tuke dominated the 49er class in the last Olympic cycle, winning every major regatta after the 2012 Olympics, including four consecutive world titles and an Olympic gold in Rio 2016.

Since Rio they have dedicated themselves to helping Team NZ win the 35th America’s Cup in 2017 and more recently completed the 2017/18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The pair have made no secret that another Olympic campaign was high on their agenda but wanted to wait until the Volvo Ocean Race had concluded to reset goals with their core team.

Burling and Tuke will once again work closely with Hamish Willcox and David Slyfield to try to win another Olympic gold medal in 2020.

“It’s not a decision we made lightly” said Tuke. “Representing your country at Olympic level is the highest honour and we are both incredibly focused on defending the Cup for New Zealand as part of Emirates Team New Zealand. We wanted to ensure we could give both campaigns every-

thing we’ve got.”

Burling added: “We know the combination of Olympic and America’s Cup sailing complement each other. It creates a really high-performance environment across all areas of sailing for us to push ourselves and be at the top of our game.”

“The main thing we wanted was to be able to give ourselves a fair shot,” said Burling told Radio Sport’s Jason Pine.

“We’ve obviously got incredibly high expectations for ourselves and if we wanted to do it, we wanted to do it our way and do it properly. We wanted to have a little bit of time off after the Volvo, which is obviously an incredibly

gruelling race, before we made our final decision.

“Now we’re both really excited about the challenge. Both of us have always had a pretty special spot for the Olympics, it’s what you grow up sailing as a kid. We both really wanted to take it on again and we’re both really excited we’ve got a pretty good in place to be able to execute it as well as we think we can.”

The duo has the support of Team NZ and Yachting New Zealand.

“It’s great to have them back in the 49er,” Yachting New Zealand high performance director Ian Stewart said.

Wallabies and Waratahs star Kurtley Beale has opened up about how he was racially abused in South Africa during his Super Rugby debut in 2007. Ahead of the Waratahs’ semi-final against the Lions in Johannesburg this weekend, Beale revealed that he was called a “black c***” by an opponent in his debut against the Sharks in Durban. The Waratahs midfielder talked about how racism has affected his life in a video he shot for headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation, an Australian organisation which combats mental illness and depression among young men.

Boost for Phoenix The Wellington Phoenix have further bolstered their squad for the upcoming A-League season with the signing of Polish midfielder Michal Kopczynski.

The 26-year old has been unveiled on a season-long loan deal in Wellington today and joins countryman Filip Kurto in Wellington as coach Mark Rudan’s roster starts to take shape.

Luke shared a screenshot of a NRL. com article saying that Sutton had been “assigned to a lower-profile match”, calling it “an insult”.

Bogut ready for NBL Andrew Bogut will make his NBL debut in the Sydney Kings’ season opener against last year’s grand finalists, two days after the competition tips off. The only thing lacking from the wild 16th stage of the Tour de France was a shakeup in the overall standings.

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe took advantage of his downhill skills to win the first of three mountainous legs in the Pyrenees, which was briefly interrupted when police used tear gas to disperse a farmers’ protest that had blocked the road with bales of hay.

The overall standings were unchanged. Geraint Thomas in the yellow jersey, second-placed Chris Froome and third-placed Tom Dumoulin all crossed together nearly nine minutes behind.

The farmers’ protest occurred 30km into the 218km leg from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon.

Thomas, Froome, world champion Peter Sagan and other riders were treated with eye drops due to the tear gas amid a 15-minute delay.

“I just felt my throat and nose were burning, eyes were burning afterward,” Froome said. “But I think quite a lot of riders were in a similar situation.

“Thankfully the effect didn’t last long,” Froome added. “It was just a temporary thing with stinging and burning.”

It was the latest in a series of incidents involving spectators during this year’s race, with Team Sky riders being pushed and spat on and 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali having his back broken in a crash when a fan caught their

Hopoate – who carries the ignominious record for being the most suspended player in NRL history – elected to accept a four-game ban rather than front the judiciary. The 44-year-old faces a further three charges for code of conduct offences which will be heard next week and could result in a lengthy suspension. Mbappe reveals injury France striker Kylian Mbappe has revealed he played the World Cup semifinals and final with a back injury he hid from his rivals. In an interview with France Football magazine, Mbappe says he displaced three vertebrae in his back during the tournament in Russia three days before France defeated Belgium 1-0 in the semifinals. Full stop on decorated career Graeme Sanders’ entry into New Zealand’s training ranks was a memorable one.

The Te Awamutu horseman began his career with his late father Bill and their partnership made a flying start.

“I started with Dad in 1970 and on my first day as a trainer we won the Grand National with Spray Doone, it was run on August 1 in those days,” Sanders said.

Nearly half a century later, he is calling time and officially retiring from his current partnership with daughter Debbie Sweeney after Laddie of Oakview runs in the Weowna Family Trust Hurdle (3000m) at Rotorua on Saturday.

“I started with a jumper and I’ll be finishing with a jumper,” Sanders said.

However, he will still be very much involved with the running of the stable.

“Nothing will change really, I just won’t have my name in the book and I’ll be helping Debbie,” Sanders said.

“I got a bit crook last year and had a warning sign in November. I had a stroke, but I’m pretty good now. Doing nothing is no good – you’ve got to keep busy.”

Sanders and his father were the country’s dominant trainers during the 1970s and won five straight premierships during that period.

“In the early days we had a big team of horses,” he said. “We won five in a row and we would have probably won the next two if we had stayed together, but it was time to move on in the game.”

Sanders, who has a winning tally in excess of 1200, subsequently trained in his own right and later in partnership with his son Mark and latterly Debbie.

“The best horse I had was Ballroom Babe, she won three Group Ones, and Elevenses was another Group One winner,” he said.

Outside forces dictate race journey Mark Oulaghan will be keeping tabs on the opposition and the weather before confirming the new season programme for Shadows Cast.

The Awapuni trainer has entered his stakes winner in both the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) and the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m), but he will be taking a realistic approach.

“He’s got nominations for those first two days at Hawke’s Bay, although that could be a fraction too rich for him so we’ll see a bit nearer the time whether we go there,” he said.

“It’s undecided and it will all be influenced by the weather anyway. He hasn’t had a gallop yet and we’ll get him going in the next couple of weeks.

“He could have a trial at somewhere like Foxton. The problem these days is that a lot of the racing is at Palmerston North and Trentham and they are heavy winter tracks.”

Shadows Cast has won seven races with his career highlight a shared victory with Son Of Maher in last year’s Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) and Oulaghan again has an eye on the Riccarton spring feature.

Meanwhile, Oulaghan could be making an earlier trip to Riccarton with Upper Cut, who has triumphed in the last two editions of the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Grand National Steeplechase (5600m).

The son of Yamanin Vital opened his current campaign with a run on the flat and a fifth placing over hurdles at Wanganui. He will make his third appearance in the Lawnmaster Amateur (2100m) at Trentham today.

“As long as he gets through that okay, he’ll go straight to the Koral Steeples,” Oulaghan said. “He’s well and has done a lot of work.”

Oulaghan’s other runner at his home meeting is Counter Attack in Race 3.

El Luchador’s flat future in the balance A hat-trick of wins on the flat may not be enough to stave off a jumping role for El Luchador this winter.

The six-year-old will go into the Woods Contracting Taumarunui Gold Cup (2200m) at Rotorua on Saturday off the back of successes at Tauranga and at Trentham.

“He was a bit tired after Wellington, it was a big trip and a heavy track but he has bounced back well,” trainer Mark Brooks said.

“If we were fortunate enough to win again on Saturday he will have gone from carrying 53kg to 60kg in three starts. That would make it tough on him, he’s not a big horse. If he went jumping he would be back at the bottom of the handicap.”

El Luchador has already showed promise over fences and was placed in a hurdle trial at Cambridge in May before he opened his successful flat campaign.

“He went over the hurdles to get him fitter and now he’s gone up the handicap on the flat pretty quickly we might have to look at it again,” Brooks said.

While a hurdle campaign may be looming, El Luchador’s progress this winter hasn’t come as any surprise to Brooks.

When South Island target shooting’s biggest prize goes on the line in Nelson this weekend, two Mid Canterbury teams will be among those taking aim.

For the first time, the teams will compete under the banner of Target Shooting Mid Canterbury, which is a combination of members from the Coronation Target Shooting Club and the Phoenix Target Shooting Club, a new club born out of demand as the number of juniors and newcomers to the sport ballooned.

Those numbers, while great for the clubs and the sport, made life difficult when it came to selecting teams to represent Mid Canterbury at this weekend’s South Island Target Shooting Association Andrews and Faulkner Match in

Nelson, Coronation’s club captain Nina McKenzie said.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury has named two teams for Nelson, an open team and a junior team, and they feature a mix of old heads and some relative newcomers to rep shooting, with some talented young juniors set to shoot for both teams.

The open team is Steve McArthur (captain), Lanelle McArthur, Shania Harrison-Lee, Emma Smith, Nina McKenzie, Nick Stewart, TJ Stewart, Sandy Bennett, Michaela Smith, Bryan Hunter, Colin Taylor and Keith Bonnington, while the junior team is Lanelle McArthur (captain), Emma Smith, Shania HarrisonLee, Sam Smith, Charlotte McKenzie and Ben Thomas.

“We are really fortunate with our juniors. We’ve already got New

Zealand reps so they are really setting the benchmark at the top end and a lot of kids are chasing,” McKenzie said.

Harrison-Lee produced one of the club’s latest successes, winning the South Island junior championship last month, with Lanelle McArthur the runner-up, and it is hoped they’ll play a part in another success this weekend.

“We are going with the intention to compete against probably the more experienced and bigger associations, like Christchurch are very strong and Marlborough/ Nelson and Dunedin are very strong, and what we are after is a good, consistent performance from each team member,” McKenzie said.

The team is a mix of shooters from both the Coronation club and the Phoenix Target Shooting

Club, which was less than a year old. The Phoenix club gives juniors and newcomers a place to begin, with the help of some more experienced heads.

“We had such a tremendous amount of interest and new people that we split it across a couple of nights, and it became apparent it would be more effective to focus on one group on one night,” McKenzie said.

That was how Phoenix began.

“We’ve always had juniors and have a good relationship with the college and with them we run NCEA credits for Year 12, and we’re the only club in the country that does that,” McKenzie said.

The numbers of kids coming along just kept growing, and a number of adults were also taking the sport up later in life, McKenzie said. Even she only took up target

shooting six or seven years ago.

“Ashburton has always been strong in shooting, for a small centre nationally speaking.

“We do well, but we are really excited with the talent that’s coming through, and they are not all under-21. Some of them are discovering the sport in the middle of their lives and it’s good because as long as your eyesight is amenable, age doesn’t come into it.”

This weekend’s competition would be good practice for some of the members of the Mid Canterbury Target Shooting team who have also been selected for a North v South shoot which was also being hosted by Nelson next month. Those shooters are Lanelle McArthur, Emma Smith, Shania Harrison-Lee, Michaela Smith, Sandy Bennett, Nina McKenzie and Steve McArthur.
