When Prime Minister Bill English stripped MP Jo Goodhew of her ministerial responsibilities, he effectively called time on her political career. After 12 years as Aoraki and then Rangitata’s member of parliament, Goodhew yesterday announced she would not be seeking re-election this year; her future Jo would lie outside politics. She’s making no secret of the reasons – the portfolio reshuffle by new Prime Minister Bill English that saw her pushed down the rankings, stripping her of any responsibility other than for her electorate. “If I was still a minister I’d still be seeking re-election, but when I looked at the future without being a minister I knew I needed to look for other challenges. I now have the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of another career after politics,” she said. English announced his portfolio shake-up just before Christmas and overnight Goodhew went from minister to backbencher. At the time she admitted the demotion was ‘a pretty rude shock,’ one she didn’t see coming.
She spent the days before Christmas packing up her Beehive office and farewelling staff. She knew she was coming back to a new year in politics with an empty diary. What she also did prior to Christmas was have several conversations with English about her political future. “The prime minister and I were talking about the challenges available and he knew before Christmas that I was considering my political fuGoodhew ture. With my skill set there isn’t the right challenges for me,” Goodhew said. While she was bitterly disappointed with the outcome of the cabinet reshuffle, the decision not to seek reelection was not a knee-jerk reaction, she said. “I’ve taken my time and I’ve been very careful about my decision. This has been a part of my life for a long time. It’s part of who I am now.” Goodhew was elected to Parliament in 2005, first for Aoraki (2005 to 2008) and then Rangitata (2008 to 2017).
