Champion waterskier Hugh Donaldson of Ashburton lost consciousness after crashing in competitions at Lake Hood on Saturday, and is now recovering at home.

The 16-year-old Ashburton College pupil, who competes internationally and is ranked number one overall boys in New Zealand, is counting his lucky stars that he has come out well from his first major crash.

Prison for knifepoint robbery of dairy A man who terrified two people as he attempted to rob an Ashburton dairy at knifepoint has been sent to prison.

George Siaso Ioapo, 24, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, where he was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment on a charge of assault with intent to rob.

The court was told Ioapa entered the Creek Road On the Spot dairy at about 7.30pm on September 9 on the pretext of wanting a specific item. He left the shop, only to return 20 minutes later armed with a large boning knife.

He grabbed the dairy’s owner by her clothing and while holding the knife at her side, demanded money.

She offered him the contents of the till, saying he “could have it all” but that didn’t satisfy Ioapo, who then demanded access to the safe and forced her into the back of the shop.

A 14-year-old part-time staff member was attempting to hide during the attempted robbery.

While Ioapo was momentarily distracted by this, the shop owner managed to activate the alarm button, causing him to leave the premises. Outside the shop Ioapo engaged in conversation with a member of the public and when security personnel and police officers arrived he was still in the vicinity.

bin. When arrested Ioapo was alleged to have said: “At least I’ll get my gang patch for this”. However Judge Maze discounted this comment as bravado, saying there was no evidence Ioapo was associated with any gang.

Defence lawyer Lee Lee Heah said her client was “truly remorseful” and was keen to participate in restorative justice with the victim.

While on custodial remand for the past four-and-a-half months, Ioapo had also taken part in courses to address his issues and had gleaned some insight into his offending, Ms Heah said.

She asked Judge Maze to consider a home detention sentence as an alternative to custodial sentence indicated at an earlier hearing.

Ioapo had also written an apology letter to his victim, which Judge Maze described as articulate and intelligent, but it was not enough to sway her earlier decision.

She pointed to the serious nature of the offending and the vulnerability of what was in essence two victims.

Judge Maze did shave three months off her earlier indication of 23 months’ imprisonment because of Ioapo’s early guilty plea and his “genuine remorse”.

The level of the offending activated the three strikes’ legislation under which further violent offending is likely to result in Ioapo serving a sentence without the possibility of parole.

Alan Trott releases second garde

Alan Trott might be an international name in the horticultural world, but the Ashburton man is also rapidly gaining a reputation as an author of note.

Over more than 30 years, the self-taught gardener and photographer turned a barren block of land on Racecourse Road into a garden that has earned its creator a place in the international garden hall of fame, as a Garden of International Significance. And in 2012 he published his first book, From Pasture to Paradise, telling the story of the transformation of that bare land and tumbledown house into a garden that attracts thousands of international visitors every year.

That first book took readers on a journey, its focus was on words as much as photographs. The focus of his second book, Paradise Through the Seasons is heavy on images. Mr Trott describes it as more of a picture book for gardeners who want visual inspiration.

“A lot of gardeners don’t want a book that’s heavy with text,” he said.

Its photographs are divided according to the seasons, with just a page or two of text per season.

“It’s designed to show that the garden is beautiful at any time of the year. A lot of people who come, come only once and see just one season. It shows people what can be grown here.”

He believes Paradise Through

the Seasons complements his first book, but he’s not planning a third – yet.

The photos are a mix of shots showing beautiful gardenscapes and perfect close-up shots of individual plants, blooms or seed heads. Every plant photographed has a short narrative including its botanical and common name and each is listed in more detail in an index.

A four-hectare garden might not be for everyone, but for Alan and Catherine Trott it is a lifestyle of choice. Their rewards come in sharing that garden with visitors from around the world and it’s probably among the international gardening community that it is better known and better visited than closer to

Today Mr Trott looks at his extensive garden and says his development programme has been completed. “We can’t make it any bigger, don’t want to make it bigger.

It’s all fine-tuning now. It’s now our hobby, our life and it’s exciting. We meet so many people from around the world and we’re meeting positive people, people who enjoy nature.”

The Trotts enjoy their garden and their greatest pleasure is sharing that garden with others.

“It’s our life really, but like any garden it is just one person’s dream,” Mr Trott said.

Families are feeling the pressure of back-to-school costs with term 1 starting next week.

Parents have been shopping for uniforms, stationery and devices over the past few weeks to be ready in time for the new school year.

Presbyterian Support regional manager Jackie Girvan said in October every year they have about five families come to them in Ashburton who cannot afford their child’s uniform and a few at the beginning of the year.

The organisation helps the families by applying for grants, offering donated uniforms or helping them buy one, she said.

There are a number of other agencies in Ashburton that can also help struggling families.

Ashburton mother Rebecca Jeffery-Jones, whose seven-year-old daughter Abbie goes to Allenton School, said she has to budget in advance for back-to-school costs such as uniforms and stationery.

They are lucky because the school makes sure the stationery list only has necessary things on it and Abbie’s birthday is at the beginning of the year, so she gets some stationery as presents.

Abbie is too young to have to take an electronic device to school

but it is something the family will have to consider in a few years, she said.

“That’s a big one on my mind.”

Paper Plus Ashburton owner Terry McNab has been busy with families buying school stationery since the day school finished last December.

“It gets earlier every year.”

This is partly because the stationery lists are now given out at the end of the school year, but also because many families go on holiday in January and want to get it organised early, he said.

The costs vary between schools, but usually a family will spend from $30 to $150.

For the consumer school supplies costs have decreased dramatically, but not for the supplier.

With Paper Plus’ price match guarantee and their back-toschool sale throughout January, Mr McNab loses money on many of the items.

To help with the cost of uniforms most schools have secondhand clothing available, including Rakaia School.

Rakaia School Support chairwoman Anita Freer, who helps run the second-hand uniform sales, said they have a system where parents can bring in an item of clothing that their child had outgrown and swap it for a bigger size.

Missing teenager found safe and well

A severely autistic 15-year-old who went missing in Ashburton on Sunday was found before nightfall, much to the relief of his parents and the police.

The boy walked off about 1pm from the Ashburton Domain, where he had been picnicking with his family after they had stopped on their way home to North Canterbury from a trip down south.

Ashburton constable Ben Rutherford said it had been a “massive relief” when he got news of a sighting of the youth about 5.30pm and he was able to be reunited with his family.

Mr Rutherford was grateful to two teenage girls who had spotted the boy on Moore Street, after they had been at the domain earlier and were alerted to his family’s plight.

Mr Rutherford said the boy had not been familiar with the Ash-

burton area and had walked off and his parents had not noticed he was missing for a couple of minutes.

All available staff in Ashburton at the time, which was six police officers, as well as a dog handler from Timaru, were put on to the case.

Search and rescue personnel from Christchurch were also preparing to attend.

Mr Rutherford was among the officers and talked to people in

the domain, giving them a description of the boy.

Among those he talked to were the two teenage girls, who had been playing cricket.

“It was a massive relief, especially for the parents,” Mr Rutherford said.

The sharp eyes of the young pair had resulted in the happy outcome, as well as saving further police time and resources and avoiding the need to set up command posts.

Centre plans set to surface

The community will shortly have its first opportunity to have a say on the Ashburton District’s new $16 million civic centre and library project.

As consultants Opus prepare to take a long, hard look at the site options identified for a project that could see a new library and new council administration building on a new site, the council has highlighted the need to have public input into the project from the outset.

And this will see people given an opportunity to comment on a range of possible sites identified by the council as well as

coming up with suggestions for alternatives the council may not have considered.

The early consultation was being undertaken to ensure the community was well aware of the process the project would go through as a final site was identified, council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said.

In November Ashburton District councillors employed Opus to evaluate a long list of sites before it short-lists these, kicking off a second round of consultation.

The council has used the services of local government advisors Morrison Lowe, to ensure the contract for site evaluation

would be carried out in sufficient depth and would also encourage Opus to look for other options that might not be on the list, Mr Dalziel said.

“This is about questioning everything, taking nothing for granted and reflecting on the lessons we’ve learned on past projects to make sure we get our consultation right.

“We’ve made a $16 million provision over three years for the project but that’s just a provision. We need to find out how robust we are with this figure.”

From the council’s point of view the new civic centre and library project was a clean sheet exercise that would be totally

transparent for ratepayers, Mr Dalziel said.

“Hand on heart, I don’t have a preferred option on this. It’s about the best option for the future and the one that is cost effective. We’ll start involving the public as quickly as we can in this.”

No date has been set for the first round of public consultation, but Mr Dalziel anticipates this will be early in the year and will take place in a number of ways such as a drop-in day where people can look at identified sites and ask questions and an option of making comments and having input by email.

Pipe bands to gather for annual festival

Waterskiers injured The Westpac rescue helicopter airlifted an Ashburton waterskier aged in his early 20s who had reportedly sustained serious injuries in an accident at Lake Hood on Saturday. St John was alerted at 6.30pm, and also sent an ambulance to the scene. The patient was flown to Christchurch Hospital, and was reported to be in a comfortable condition in a general ward yesterday. It was the second waterskiing accident attended by St John on the day.

At 12.14pm it sent an ambulance to Lake Hood. The teenage male patient had been injured waterskiing and was taken to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries, and later discharged.

At 10.57am, St John sent an ambulance to Kelvin Crescent to a female in her 80s who had fallen on a footpath. She was transported to Ashburton Hospital with minor injuries.

Fight on King Street Police were called to intoxicated males fighting on King Street on Sunday about 7.40am. About 20 people were gathered on the street, with a smaller number involved in fighting. St John was also called to the scene and sent an ambulance. It transported one male to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries, the victim of an alleged assault.

Ashburton’s version of the Edinburgh Tattoo will be staged in town on Sunday when the annual pipe band festival is held in the Ashburton Domain.

It’s an event that has celebrated all things Scottish for many years, but it’s an event that is starting to show the impact of the dwindling strength of pipe bands around New Zealand, says organiser Derrick Cullimore.

In Ashburton, however, a small group of stalwarts keeps pipe band music alive by ensuring the annual festival continues. With the Ashburton band in recess it’s been left to the visitors to provide the entertainment, but Mr Cullimore is keeping his fingers crossed that a new surge of interest locally could see Ashburton back in the competition next year.

“We’re ever hopeful. It’ll never be to the level it was before but we do have hopes for the future,” he said.

On Sunday seven bands will take part in a street march along Elizabeth Street before gathering in the domain picnic area off Grigg Street for the festival.

This will see the seven bands compete in grades, each playing a medley and a set piece.

In the glory days of the festival’s past dozens of bands competed, including some of New Zealand’s top grade one teams.

In recent years bands in many provincial centres have gone into recess and many are struggling to muster enough drummers and pipers to remain competitive, Mr Cullimore said.

While the number of bands competing might be a couple down on last year, the festival would still provide a great opportunity for people to listen to some of the best pipe band music on offer, he said.

The street march will be held at 12.30pm followed by the festival, which starts at 1pm.

Emergency calls saw an ambulance quickly on the scene, and Hugh was put into a neck brace and transported to Ashburton Hospital. His jump suit was cut off him as he was assessed, and a CT scan, to check for head injuries, came in as normal.

It was determined that his kidney and lungs took a battering, resulting in some bleeding, and his ribs, which sustained impact, will have the attention of a specialist’s diagnosis today.

Thai police are trying to identify the body of a man found on a New Zealand-registered yacht in Phuket. The Phuket News reports that the yacht is the Waitane II, and police believe the man died about 10 days before his body was discovered. An ANZ credit card was found on the vessel but there was no photographic ID which could be used to identify the man.

A local hotel worker discovered the body. “He said that he boarded and inspected the yacht after noticing a stench emanating from the vessel, and that’s when he found the body and immediately called the police,” said Maj Thada Sodarat of the Thai police. - NZME

Near drowning A 17-year-old Taupo man was taken by helicopter to hospital yesterday after almost drowning in the sea. The man was first taken to the Te Kaha Medical Centre by ambulance before being taken to Whakatane Hospital for further treatment. He had swallowed a significant amount of water.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Dunedin for fleeing police in a stolen vehicle. The incident began when an officer identified two men who police were looking for in relation to a stolen vehicle from Timaru. The men got into the stolen vehicle and, after being followed for a short time by the officer, sped off.

Police chased the vehicle, which crashed shortly afterwards on Portsmouth Drive. The men left the scene on foot and the 29-year-old was arrested shortly after. Police are still trying to locate the second man who is believed to have been the driver.

Police puppy now in training

The Ashburton police station is much quieter after its cutest member left to complete training.

Xylo, a black German shepherd, was fostered by Ashburton’s Constable Ben Rutherford from the age of eight weeks until seven months.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said she finished her time with Constable Rutherford just before Christmas and is now undertaking training in Christchurch.

She has been incorporated into the operational police force and is now with other police dogs in the vans while on duty, he said.

“She’s getting a taste of the work.”

All police dog training is rigorous and challenging but Xylo has been doing very well, he said.

“It’s quite intense, she’s got a long road ahead of her.”

Constable Rutherford said he would miss Xylo but would receive regular updates from her trainers.

“We quickly developed a bond and it was very tough to let her go.”

When she left she could sit, lie down, stand up, stay, come and retrieve toys on command, he said.

The woman was buying a cake for her daughter’s birthday when an elderly man crashed into the shop, hitting the woman and her daughter and knocking them into the cake display case. Emergency services were called to the scene about 11.13am.

She was a very bright puppy – eager to learn and well-behaved but cheeky as well.

“She was a hit with people at work and always causing mischief at the station by stealing people’s work and grabbing stuff from the rubbish bin.”

Constable Rutherford would spend three or four hours a day training Xylo and would reward her with her favourite treat, precooked sausages.

A two-year-old girl is in Auckland’s Starship Hospital after receiving serious head injuries believed to have been caused when a TV she was climbing toppled on her. St John was called to Dannevirke at 5.43pm yesterday, where the girl was assessed and treated.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called to fly the girl and her mother to Palmerston North Hospital. The girl was later flown to Auckland in a critical condition.

East Coast starts to dig out Brilliant sunshine and gently rising temperatures followed the mammoth blizzard that paralyzed Washington and set a single-day snowfall record in New York City, enabling millions on the US East Coast to dig out and enjoy the winter.

The timing could not have been better: Most people stayed home as the heaviest snow began falling Friday evening and all day Saturday, enabling crews to clear roads and rails, and then awoke Sunday to see grimy cities blanketed in lovely but unfamiliar terrains.

“It feels like old times when there weren’t any cars,” said Taylor Scheulke, an associate producer at National Geographic television who made a 36-hour time-lapse video of snow piling up outside her Washington home and posted it on YouTube.

The storm dropped snow from the Gulf Coast to the northeastern New England states. The heaviest official report was 106.7 centimetres, in Glengary, West Virginia, but huge accumulations elsewhere stranded tens of thousands of travellers and forced countless others to change plans.

At least 29 deaths were blamed on the weather, first in car crashes, and then while shovelling snow or breathing carbon monoxide.

Attackers committed earlier Isis atrocities New video released by the Islamic State group yesterday shows the extremists who carried out the November 13 attacks in Paris committing atrocities in Isis-controlled territory while plotting the slaughter in the French capital that left 130 people dead and hundreds injured. The group also threatened to attack Britain.

The 17-minute video shows the extent of the planning that went into the multiple attacks in Paris, which French authorities have said from the beginning was planned in Syria.

The video was provided online by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi websites.

All nine militants seen in the video died in the Paris attacks or their aftermath. Seven of the attackers — four from Belgium and three from France — spoke fluent French. The two others — identified by their noms de guerre as Iraqis — spoke in Arabic.

The video was filmed before the men sneaked back into Europe and contains no footage shot by the attackers during the days of terror that began November 13 and ended only on November 18 with the death of Abdelhamid Abbaoud, who was believed to be the leader of the attacks.

Instead, it was assembled from material shot before the men left for Paris, news video and amateur video. The video did not specify where the nine men were filmed, but it was

believed to have been in Isiscontrolled territory in Syria.

In the video, as in other Islamic State propaganda trying to drive a wedge between European Muslims and their governments, the men say it is a religious duty to join them.

They threaten more attacks in Europe, and the footage closes with one of the militants holding a severed head and footage of Cameron giving a speech — with a text in English warning that whoever stands with the unbelievers “will be a target for our swords”.

However, the nuptials may still be some time away as TMZ reports that Carey is not yet divorced from Nick Cannon, and Packer is still married to estranged wife Erica. Carey and Cannon were together from 2008 until 2014, and are parents to four-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, and the report suggests the former couple has not yet settled financial issues in their divorce proceedings.

Hurley rules out Warne reunion Elizabeth Hurley is unlikely to rekindle her romance with Aussie cricketer Shane Warne, saying the pair are on “new courses” in life.

But the British actress, who split with the spin king two years ago, says she is more like Warne than any of her other ex-boyfriends.

“I got on with him incredibly well,” she told The Mail on Sunday’s You magazine. “I am far more similar to Shane than the other big loves of my life. “We were extremely comfortable with each other.” Hurley, who is currently single, said the pair lived identical lives, as they were both used to being on the road, impossible schedules and being breadwinners. “We were both in the public eye. Stop selling off the silver to the highest bidder Sue Newman

here’s something out of kilter when the people of New Zealand have to raise money to buy a slice of Godzone to protect it from what could potentially be overseas ownership.

A slice of land in one of our most beautiful spots, the Abel Tasman National Park, is on the market with a price tag of $2 million.

It’s clearly been in private hands for decades and its sympathetic owners have been happy for it to remain in an untouched state able to be viewed and probably accessed by the public. It has a riparian rights tag which means there is no Queen’s Chain. And that means a new owner could prevent anyone walking along his or her beach.

Good on the neighbours who’ve decided they have to protect this piece of land and its beach. They’ve started a Givealittle page they hope will attract enough money to buy the block outright.

It would then be gifted to the Department of Conservation or put in a trust to ensure it remained in the public domain.

While DOC might be its logical owner it’s cash-strapped and finding $2 million for a relatively small block of land that will have aesthetic rather than conservation value, is outside its brief.

And therefore it falls to community fundraisers if we want to keep a special slice of our country in Kiwi hands.

We are fortunate to have people in this country who care enough to do this, but it’s something they shouldn’t have to do.

In the bigger scheme of things this is just one small block of land in one small corner of a remote national park, but it’s what it represents that’s the issue.

As a country we don’t place a high enough value on the natural assets we have. We’re generally happy to sell the family silver to the highest bidder but once it’s gone its future is out of our control.

Instead we should be adopting the practice common in many parts of the world where overseas investment in land – farm land or holiday spots is welcomed, but only with a local equity partner.

Build your business, live in your house, but as Kiwis we should retain ownership of our land.

YOUR VIEW Schooling On Friday, January 22 you reported our community’s schools received ‘more than’ $700,000 from parents in 2014. As you somewhat sardonically observed, this is not ‘free education’.

The government could assist our society by properly funding schools and pre-schools so schools would no longer need to levy parents. Parents of school children are already financially committed to supporting them.

This penny-pinching ACT-Maori-United-National government underfunds education. It wants tax cuts for a few at the expense of children and their parents.

Education is not an optional luxury for the wealthy as it was in Victorian times. Paying so-called voluntary donations levied by schools is a burden that falls disproportionately heavily on the least well-off families. Truly free education would benefit all citizens.

Not only are 3D printers becoming readily available, but 3D food printers are also arriving on the scene.

Changing with the times A

nother fortnight passes and we have another lacklustre Global Dairy Trade (GDT) result.

Amongst all the doom and gloom from that, I had an e-mail from a colleague who obviously had plenty of time over the summer break to do some serious thinking.

Now all the so-called experts constantly put the boot into the New Zealand dairy industry because we are supposedly just producing commodity products, and we don’t produce enough of the high-end consumer branded products.

The question that was posed to me is, are these branded consumer products the way of the future, or are they going to be a thing of the past? Because not only are 3D printers becoming readily available, but 3D food printers are also arriving on the scene.

Now these 3D food printers aren’t quite doing the job yet of the food replicators from Star Trek, at the moment they just seem to do cake decorations, lol-

lies, and a few other things but one can assume they will only get better.

The question is will they be a short-lived trendy fad, or are they here to stay?

If they are here to stay what does that mean? From some research I did on YouTube, with a conventional printer you insert cartridges.

But instead of ink they contain the ingredients that are needed.

Then much like your standard printer you load your document, in this case a recipe in a 3D format and hit print.

Imagine if this technology was to take off and it became a part of every kitchen. How would that change things for us food producers?

Well the consumer is now no

longer going to the supermarket looking for finished manufactured food stuffs, they are looking for ingredients and the manufacturing takes place in their kitchen.

When you think about all the various food products that milk or components of milk go into, it’s quite a few. So it’s more than likely that a good number of the recipes for these 3D food printers will require various dairy ingredients.

So should the likes of Fonterra be worried about moving products from its ingredients business into consumer branded products, or instead should they be looking at repackaging those ingredients from half ton bags or whatever they ship in, into smaller, ready to use packaging, for home manufacturing.

If this is the future, then strangely enough through not being quite advanced enough, we are well positioned to take advantage of it.

Another positive point would be that because we are selling a non traditional product, I

dare say there will be a few big loopholes in all the trade protection rules in the markets that are likely to uptake this technology first in Europe and the US. The trade off from all of this is likely to be that the customer who can afford a 3D food printer is likely to be rather discerning, so they are going to pay a good amount of attention to the history of the ingredients that go into their printer.

Which means, those standards for everything from sustainability to animal welfare are only going to get higher.

Of course, we have no way of knowing whether this is going to be a fad or not. I certainly hope they are considering buying one of these printers to put in the staff kitchen at the Fonterra Research Centre.

I reckon that might be the ideal way to come up with the next big thing.

Auckland fifth least-affordable Auckland’s housing affordability has worsened, with the city climbing from the world’s ninth most expensive city to fifth in a year.

The annual Demographia survey, released yesterday, compares prices to incomes in 367 cities. Auckland is one of the worst in the world due to extremely high house prices coupled with moderate wages.

With a median price of $748,700, and a $77,500 median income, Auckland has a house price-wage multiple of of 9.7.

Any more than 3 is classified as unaffordable by the report’s authors.

Prime Minister John Key defended the housing situation in Auckland, telling Radio New Zealand the data the survey was based on could be old.

“At the very back end of 2015 [prices] started coming off, I think, certainly not rising as rapidly,” he told RNZ. “In part, it does reflect the fact that Auckland is a very attractive place to live.”

When comparing prices to incomes Auckland is one of the worst in the world due to extremely high house prices coupled with moderate wages.

Key said growing demand, strong confidence about Auckland, low interest rates and low inflation all contributed to the high prices.

“There’s no question you need

more supply, there’s no question we’re pushing things through as fast as we can.”

Report authors Hugh Pavletich, a Christchurch-based former property developer, and

American Wendell Cox argue that a shortage of land drives up prices.

Don Brash, former Reserve Bank governor, said housing affordability was “[overwhelmingly] a function of just one thing: the extent to which governments place artificial restrictions on the supply of residential land”.

Kim Campbell, Employers and Manufacturers Association chief executive, worries how essential workers would be able to afford to live in Auckland, with its tightly constrained geographic limits.

Mr Campbell recommended more land be freed up for building.

Teachers, nurses, firefighters, bus drivers, police officers and other key workers often could not afford to buy in Auckland, leaving the city with a grim future when it needed the next generation of key workers, he said.

Property Council chief executive Connal Townsend expressed disquiet at Demographia’s findings.

“The crisis is getting worse and

worse. It’s all about lack of supply of land which in Auckland is more than 50 per cent of the cost of a new house. ... The solution is to free up more land and free up the constraints which prevent more density.”

Steve Evans, Fletcher Building’s housing chief operating officer, says a shared ownership model could be the solution.

Banks, pension funds, businesses or social services could help by owning a share of a new house, perhaps 40 per cent, he said. That would mean a $750,000 Auckland house would only require about $450,000 from the first-time buyer, demanding deposits as low as $20,000 to $50,000.

Over perhaps a decade, the first-home buyer would buy the other party out and get 100 per cent ownership.

Key worker housing schemes in London offer new homes to rent at 80 per cent or less of the typical market value and they are generally in high demand.

$180m makeover announced Auckland Airport is embarking on one of its biggest projects since opening 50 years ago, yesterday releasing details of a doubling in the size of its international departure area, including a new security processing zone, new passenger lounge and shopping area.

The company will spend up to $180 million on the project, which will dig into parts of the existing 1970s-era international terminal and also extend its floor area as part of the company’s 30year vision for the airport.

“It’s a big project, one of the most significant since the original development of the two terminal buildings and the runway itself,” said chief executive Adrian Littlewood.

The new international departure project almost doubles the size of the present primary international departure processing zone, passenger lounge and retail hub and comprises three distinct

spaces: a reconfigured landside farewell area, a new and expanded security screening and processing area and a new passenger lounge and retail hub.

“Today’s announcement is an exciting and major step forward in the ongoing implementation of our 30-year vision to build our ‘airport of the future’, which will eventually see us able to accommodate 40 million passengers a year by 2040, from 16 million today,” he said.

The project was the next step in the development of the combined domestic and international terminal.

Littlewood said international traffic was growing more quickly than domestic movements.

“It makes a lot of sense for us to concentrate on growing that [international] area.” To the end of November last year, there was a 7 per cent increase in international growth and 5 per cent more do-

mestic traffic over 12 months.

“Those are numbers we haven’t seen for a decade in Auckland,” said Littlewood. “It fits with that overall story of a booming tourist market.” The $160-$180 million project was both an aeronautical and commercial project so the cost will be divided between airlines and the airport company, which said it would not affect its dividend, estimated by analysts at 16c a share in the coming year.

Littlewood said the area for security would be doubled, with additional flexibility for expansion with new technology in the future and an area for passengers to “recompose” themselves after going through security.

A major part of the redevelopment would be in retail, a lucrative part of the company’s business.

Total retail income in the 2015 financial year was $132 million.

MARKET REPORT Dairy Dryland pasture growth in the region has improved significantly on the back of last week’s rain and the two weekly falls over the past month.

The drought status of the at-risk areas has been extended, but the improving colour of paddocks and revitalised forage crops has given farmers hope the season may not be as bad as earlier predicted.

Managers are focused on maintaining quality in pastures, identifying dry cows, ensuring body condition scores are being maintained and monitoring all young stock to ensure they are meeting growth rate targets.

New Zealand milk production figures have shown the biggest falls have been in the North Island, with the south protecting the drop better with irrigated water.

The dairy price recovery continues to be slower than expected with last week’s auction down again and some bank analysts trimming the forecast to just over $4/kg.

The international market has been slow to adjust production in response to these unsustainable prices and, coupled with China’s economic concerns, the time is running out for an upturn this season.

The potential for sheep milk production continues to be discussed and could be an opportunity to grow a niche industry some are suggesting could be as big as our wine business.

Lamb Lamb schedules continue to ease in spite of the currency and Silver Fern Farm predicts more downside after the UK Easter chilled market has been filled.

Demand for frozen product is weak globally, with the low revenue from oil affecting demand in the Middle East, the Chinese economy in decline and returns from co-products poor, making for a bleak out-

look. The mutton kill is 35 per cent ahead of last year and unfortunately is facing a Chinese market full of stock, and prices have eased back to levels not seen since 2010.

Saleyard prices remain weak for prime lambs, but the recent rains have given store lambs a boost as lack of numbers lifted prices by $10/head.

Wool More currency-driven lifts for wool were seen in last week’s North Island sale and indicators for crossbred and lambs fibre rose between 10-18 cents from the previous event.

Prices were 20 per cent better for adult fleece and 133c/kg for lambs wool compared to last year and are the only bright light in the sheep sector.

Beef Prime beef schedules lifted slightly this week but manufacturing and bull prices continued to ease, although in the US imported prices seem to have bottomed.

New Zealand production is expected to ease in the coming weeks and coupled with a much lower Australian kill and a weakening currency, should keep supply pressure on autumn prices.

The recent rains have kept numbers of cattle lower at the saleyards, kept the traditional January price falls in check, and boosted hopes for a strong weaner beef market.

Deer Stable venison prices this week have been boosted by the currency and reports that good sales were made for Christmas chilled product. This has ensured the frozen negotiations will be made from a position of strength.

Mid Canty’s foothill Alpine-fed irrigators not struggling – Curtis

While drought conditions persist in parts of the country, many irrigating farmers are coping well with the dry conditions aided by water supply from alpine-fed irrigation schemes, according to IrrigationNZ. Farmers taking water from rivers and lakes topped up by West Coast rain have benefited from el nino’s erratic weather pattern this summer, IrrigationNZ CEO Andrew Curtis said.

“While we support the minister’s move to extend the official drought in the South Island, it is interesting to note that farmers connected to the big alpine-fed rivers and lakes haven’t struggled this season, despite low rainfall on the East Coast and an early start to the irrigation season with high temperatures in spring,” Mr Curtis said.

“While those irrigating from foothills-fed rivers and lakes have been on restriction for several weeks, alpinefed irrigators have managed to maintain supply. This reinforces our argument around building additional water storage infrastructure that taps into alpine sourc-

es. Even in an extreme el nino event like this season, alpine-fed supply offers a high degree of reliability for irrigation. For future proofing we need to move in this direction.”

Mr Curtis highlighted the experience of Central Plains Water in its first season as further evidence.

Central Plains Water CEO Derek Crombie says the new scheme has coped well – even with little rain in Central Canterbury – due to the shoring up effect of Lake Coleridge.

The stage one development, which opened in August irrigating approximately 20,000 hectares in an area bordered by the Rakaia and Hororata rivers, takes water from the Rakaia River with additional storage held within the lake.

“It’s been going really well.

We’ve been at peak demand since mid-December, but the scheme is doing the job and from what I hear talking to shareholders, they’re getting better productivity than last year,” Mr Crombie said.

“We have been able to supply 100 per cent of demand, but actual use has been a lot less than farmer expectations. We have had full run-of-river water for 89 days and only 12 days when we were using stored water for all of

While some dryland and coastal farmers were able harvest over the weekend, many closer to the hills were forced to watch and wait.

Valetta farmer David Clark said he was aware of some pea and barley crops sprouting, and a lot of ryegrass seed crops wet in rows and in trouble.

Mr Clark has had grass seed on the ground since Wednesday and oil seed rape for more than a week.

“We’ve worked hard with irrigation to keep up through the growing season, but they are just a little bit later than the dryland Methven crops – which would normally be a good thing, but we can’t get a run in them,” he said.

“The last three mornings in a row we’ve had rain from the nor’west – it doesn’t matter how big the combine is if it’s raining. If we don’t get going this afternoon, looking at the weather report I don’t think we’ll work for a week and we could be heading for serious trouble.”

Having survived a very dry growing season, the weather pattern seemed to have altered. Earlier in the season commentators were predicting drought-like conditions to continue on the east coast through until next spring, however Mr Clark said an extropic low had brought unexpected rain. But he did not discount the prospect of a dry autumn to follow.

“A wet harvest on top of such a dry spring will be a bitter pill to swallow,” he said.

So far many dry land yields have been disappointing but there is still potential for very good yields in irrigated crops, particularly in coastal areas where farmers have been able to make inroads into harvest.

Waitaki Irrigators Collective policy manager Liz Soal said irrigators drawing water from the Waitaki River and Waitaki Lakes have similarly experienced few difficulties.

“Irrigators taking from the main stem of the river have had no restrictions, only those taking from tributary rivers. It’s the same story as last year,” she said.

“We have 100 per cent reliability of take. Overall our irrigators taking from the Waitaki River and Lake Waitaki have found the very dry conditions comparatively easier to manage than those on restrictions.”

Other irrigation schemes managing to maintain flows despite little rain include the Mid Canterbury schemes connected to the Rangitata Diversion Race.

In contrast, the foothills-fed Lake Opuha has been on 50 per cent restriction for nearly a month and expects to carry that through to the end of the irrigation season. Many irrigation schemes in Otago and Marlborough are also on heavy restrictions.

IrrigationNZ has released two new resources to support farmers trying to eke out water until the end of the season. The precision irrigation resource provides expert advice, including variable rate irrigation which applies water at different volumes and speeds along the irrigator.

The second resource outlines the hydraulic and pumping considerations for irrigation.

Both books are available free of charge on IrrigationNZ’s website www.irrigationnz.co.nz under its SMART Irrigation Programme. A soil moisture monitoring resource will shortly be available.

New land use rules under scrutiny The Ashburton Water Management Zone Committee will meet today for its first meeting of the year.

Top of this year’s agenda will be looking at how new land-use rules will impact on local land users.

The committee will receive a report from Environment Canterbury on the Nutrient Management and Waitaki Plan Change to the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP).

The proposed change includes new region-wide nutrient management rules relating to land used for farming, and the zone committee will consider how it affects land-users

It requires land users to implement Good Management Practices (GMPs), and farming activities requiring resource consent will need Farm Environment Plans (FMPs). The plan change also addresses phosphorus management and is expected to be notified for public consultation in February.

A dairy farming business operating in the Rakaia area has been ordered to pay $7500 in penalties for employment law breaches.

Viewbank Dairy, situated on Rakaia Terrace must also repay money owed to workers as a result of errors made in calculating holiday pay.

The breaches were discovered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s labour inspectorate officers during a farm visit to audit compliance with minimum employment standards.

A number of breaches were identified and an employment notice was issued, however, the employer failed to comply and the matter was referred to the Employment Relations Authority.

The investigation found sev-

eral workers had been treated as casual employees when they were in fact permanent, labour inspectorate southern regional manager Stuart Lumsden said.

“As a result, employees were provided with incorrect holiday entitlements – they were getting 8 per cent on top of their usual pay, when in fact they were entitled to four weeks’ holiday pay.”

Mr Lumsden said such mistakes were not uncommon.

“Employers need to remember the 8 per cent arrangement is only lawful for employees who are on a fixed-term contract or work irregularly or intermittently, under the Holidays Act 2003.”

The employer also failed to keep accurate employment records and made deductions for accommodation without written evidence that the workers had agreed to such deductions.

Purnell – soldier, journalist and lawyer

t is pleasing to see people visiting our new museum and hearing their positive comments.

One of the areas that always sparks conversation is the portrait wall. As I have said before, those that made the wall were not chosen as being more worthy than others and often it was simply because we had a photograph and/or information on them.

There are just as many people that could have been included and at some stage they may well be. These are the people that we know about; others are just as interesting, but we haven’t “discovered” them yet.

One such person is Charles William Purnell. Charles was born in England in 1843 and came to Taranaki with his parents in 1856. Located in that area and being a young man it was possibly not surprising he joined the militia (a forerunner to the volunteers). While there is evidence to prove he served here in the New Zealand wars, he always claimed to have fought in the American Civil War for the Confederates.

Charles’ brother James, also fought in the New Zealand wars and became a major in the New Zealand Volunteers and was described as “the best rifle shot New Zealand ever produced”.

Charles Purnell worked as a journalist for a number of New Zealand newspapers and at one stage was sub-editor of The Press. Moving to Dunedin he trained as a lawyer, being admitted to the bar in 1878. He set up practice in Ashburton and

any New Zealand museums are likely to have in their collections one or more of a series of glass plates featuring a boy in army uniform playing any one of a variety of sports.

They all had a poem relating to the sport and ending up with the words “Creamoata please”.

Creamoata was the brand name of a make of creamy porridge produced from 1919 in Gore by Flemings and the boy, known as Sergeant Dan, was the company logo, used in many guises but most notably in full uniform, complete with rifle, on the wall of the company’s factory in Gore.

The Creamota brand was bought out in 2006 by Goodman Fielder who moved it to Australia and marketed it under the Uncle Toby’s brand. However, in 2008 Nestle ceased production, blaming falling demand and drought in Australia that cut their oat supply.

Sergeant Dan continued as a brand name and logo for a brand of stockfood that was made at the original Flemings factory in Gore.

The plates were produced as an advertising gimmick to encourage children to eat Creamoata – they had to eat it all so they could read the verse on the bottom of the plate.

remained here until his death in 1926, originally in partnership with a Gerald Branson. Charles sought to enter politics, but although he seemed well respected (or at least busy) as a lawyer, he could not sway the local voters to support him in his bids to enter Parliament. He stood three times but each time he was beaten soundly, coming last on two occasions.

Purnell was a man with many interests. While in Dunedin he advocated the exploration of the Antarctic by New Zealand and Australia. He was an active member of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute and wrote

many articles on such topics as the intelligence of animals.

Nationally, Charles Purnell is best known as the author of An Agrarian Law for New Zealand: Addressed to the Young Men of the Colony, written in 1874, in which he encouraged reforms that prevented land being taken up by a few rich individuals. Locally, he was a life member of the Ashburton Racing Club as well as being on the committee of the lawn tennis and bowling clubs.

Charles married Flavia Marie Hyde Wilson and the couple had six children, one of whom, Charles Arthur, became a doctor and settled in England.

Dagg staying in NZ World Cup reject Israel Dagg has put his commitment to remaining in New Zealand on paper. Or to be more precise, the 49-test outside back has taken something off paper. The Crusaders’ Dagg seemed to tweet that his test “journey” was over in the wake of his World Cup non-selection last year, although he recanted days later. Dagg has now gone a step further, revealing that he has even altered his contract.

Khawaja stars for Thunder

By Jason Phelan Australian cricket’s man of the moment, Usman Khawaja, has continued his stunning form with a match-winning innings in Sydney Thunder’s breakthrough Big Bash League title win.

On the back of five centuries at Test and BBL level over the past three months, Khawaja’s 70 from 40 balls earned him player-ofthe-final honours in Thunder’s win against Melbourne Stars at the MCG. Competing in their first BBL final after finishing last on three occasions, the Thunder chased down the Stars’ total of 9-176 with three balls to spare in front of 47,672 fans on Sunday night.

Stars kept themselves in the contest with late wickets but the damage was done earlier when Khawaja and Jacques Kallis (28 runs off 27 balls) laid the foundation with an 86-run opening partnership.

Earlier, a dashing half-century from Kevin Pietersen was the cornerstone of Stars’ innings after they were sent in to bat.

Pietersen was at his imperious best, however, smashing the Thunder attack - in particular

But for Stars, the agonising wait for BBL success continues.

With a Twenty20 World Cup looming, it’s hard to imagine a player doing more to put their name in front of national selectors, but Khawaja - left out of the current Australian limited-overs and T20 squads - is happy to let

his bat do the talking.

“I guess - I mean I’m playing as well as I ever have in T20 cricket,” Khawaja replied when asked if he felt he’d put a strong case forward for a white-ball call-up. “(But) there’s a lot that goes into selection and I’m not really worried (about that) - I’m so excited that we’ve won a championship.

“I’ve got to keep my head

down and make sure that I stay fit and healthy and hopefully there’s a lot more runs yet to come.

“I’ve put in a lot of time with my cricket over the past few years.

“I think I’ve played some pretty decent cricket in that time and when it’s your time, it’s your time.

“Things are going really well but I don’t play for individual success - nothing feels as good as winning a championship.”

In just four appearances for Thunder in BBL05, Khawaja made two unbeaten centuries and two fifties.

But he admitted he was unsure of his future with the team after three last-placed finishes in a row.

“I thought eventually it would be our time but there had to be a lot of work done,” he said.

“After the first couple of years it was tough times and I did actually think about whether I wanted to stay with the franchise or go.

“But when (Mike Hussey) came along I really thought we could bring this franchise up.

“I’m glad I stayed on.” - AAP

Taylor a hard man to replace Ross Taylor’s injury-enforced absence from the one-day international series against Pakistan and Australia raises an awkward question: Who would replace him if the 31-year-old’s not fit to play the tests against Australia?

The answer is blurred.

An MRI scan has indicated Taylor had suffered an oblique left side strain batting in New Zealand’s final Twenty20 match.

This is the man who forced the Australian bowling attack to yield in the second test at Perth in November.

His innings of 290 broke England batsman Tip Foster’s 111-year-old record of 287 for the highest test score by a visitor to Australia.

The contenders to replace him, probably in this order, are: Henry Nicholls: The 24-year-old has built a solid first-class platform of 35 games and averaged 43.22 in last season’s Plunket Shield.

Two centuries and an 88 for New Zealand A against Sri Lanka A give his CV further gloss.

At an ODI level he appears to have fitted in seamlessly.

The limited overs wicketkeeper could play as a lefthanded specialist batsman, probably at No5.

His short form batting might be struggling but give him white flannels and he’s like Clark Kent in a phone box.

He has two Plunket Shield centuries from four innings this season - one came against Northern Districts with Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

Made 88 off 70 balls in his solitary test at Headingley.

Will Young: The 23-year-old scored 909 Plunket Shield runs at an average of 53.47 in 2014-15 and has a couple of half-centuries from three innings this season.

Didn’t feast on the Sri Lanka A attack to the extent of Nicholls.

He played the northern hemisphere summer and was on stand-by for the second test at Headingley when injured keeper BJ Watling played as a batsman.

Dean Brownlie: There’s an assumption the 31-year-old won’t be recalled after making the transition to open, but Brownlie is a proven test commodity at No4.

In four outings there, all on the ill-fated 2013 South African tour, he made 0, 109, 10 and 53.

The 109, his sole century in 14 tests, came after New Zealand’s shredding for 45 in Cape Town.

Zampa to tour NZ Uncapped legspinner Adam Zampa has been included in Australia’s oneday squad for the looming New Zealand tour but Usman Khawaja’s purple patch has gone unrewarded. Boult goes to No. 1 Trent Boult has taken top spot on the ICC’s one-day bowling rankings.

The Black Caps seamer has been elevated to the No 1 position despite having only played one ODI in the past six months. Boult took 3-43 against Sri Lanka in the fifth ODI win at Mount Maunganui. A year ago the left-armer was ranked 78th in the world. He is the second New Zealander to hit No 1 this summer after Kane Williamson briefly held the top test batting spot. - NZME

Thommo in Hall of Fame Fearsome fast bowler Jeff Thomson and wicketkeeper Wally Grout will be added to Australian cricket’s Hall of Fame. Thomson terrorised batsmen in the 70s and 80s when he took 200 wickets in 51 Tests, while Grout was Australia’s gloveman from 1957 to 1966. The pair will be inducted at the Allan Border Medal in Melbourne tomorrow.

Rabada blitzes England Twenty-year-old South African speed sensation Kagiso Rabada rattled England with a career-best seven wickets to put his side in a commanding position on day three of the final Test at Centurion. Rabada is quickly making a name for himself in his country, for the quality of his performances and for what he represents as a young black cricketer. His 7-112 in England’s first innings at Centurion Park was a show of skill, maturity and endurance as he completed 29 overs and tore through the tourists’ in-form middle order.

Mid Canterbury have won the Browning Shield for a third successive year and the 18th time since the tournament’s inception.

Mid Canterbury convincingly toppled 23-time shield winners Malvern 20-4 in their opening clash on Saturday.

Neil McCann’s team dominated in the doubles, winning all of the men’s and women’s matches and all but one of the mixed doubles ties.

A determined effort in singles play saw Mid Canterbury notch wins in the men’s and women’s singles, 4-2 and 5-2 respectively.

North Canterbury were next on the agenda for Mid Canterbury, who produced another fine team performance for a 19-5 win, this time going one better in doubles play to win all 12 matches and five of the six women’s singles match-ups.

With number one and two players Rhys Cromie and Neil McCann rested, North Canterbury managed to get the better of the men’s singles, winning 4-2, but the young Mid Canterbury line-up gained some valuable experience at the higher level.

Mid Canterbury ended the weekend with a third win in as many matches, this time over

17-time equal winners Ellesmere 16-8.

Mid Canterbury took out the men’s singles at a canter, with the only loss of the six matches coming in Cromie’s tightly contested clash against Edward Williams.

Ellesmere got the better of the women’s singles 4-2, but Mid Canterbury had clean sweeps in the men’s and women’s doubles, while the mixed doubles were all square at three matches each.

Mid Canterbury captain Neil McCann credited his team for retaining the shield, and is confident of continued success with plenty of talent in the junior ranks.

“It was really great, but what’s

more impressive is our juniors,” he said.

“Each year the team is getting stronger.

“Rhys and I, at number one and two, sat out against North Canterbury to give the junior guys that experience and they did very well.”

McCann said there is a strong sense of camaraderie among the Mid Canterbury contingent, who are passionate about competing in the 80-year-old tournament annually.

“There’s a few core families that make up the Mid Canterbury team that are really committed to win, it was a great team effort,” he said.

Azarenka on target for clash with Williams

By John salvado Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka has continued her impressive run into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Czech Barbora Strycova yesterday.

The No.14 seed from Belarus has dropped just 11 games in her first four matches and shapes as the biggest title threat to world No.1 Serena Williams.

The Australian Open has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Azarenka, whose only two major titles to date came at Melbourne Park in 2012 and 2013.

Strycova had her moments in yesterday’s match without ever really threatening to emulate her shock third-round victory

over No.3 seed Garbine Muguruza from Spain. Strycova has now been beaten by Azarenka at Melbourne Park in each of the past three Opens.

Tennis match fixing A former Australian tennis player is reportedly set to admit having shared inside information as part of an alleged match fixing scheme in Queensland in 2013. Nick Lukas Lindahl, 27, appeared before Burwood Local Court yesterday, accused of offering to throw a match to enable a former player and friends to win thousands of dollars.

Lindahl was arrested by the New South Wales Organised Crime Squad in February last year but has been out on bail.

of 4 buoys at 37km/h for her national junior girls’ qualification in her first tournament, and also won the Aquafest novice trophy with her 10 buoy personal best.

The juniors’ trophy went to Southern’s Blake Hamilton, while the Aquafest women’s trophy was taken home again by Lana Donaldson, who consistently skied 4 and 4.5 buoys on the 13m line.

Sister Rachel Donaldson was also in good form, skiing to within one buoy of her personal best in both rounds for second spot.

The men’s trophy was a battle between boys and seniors after top seed Karl Donaldson was out of contention with a first pass fall.

Timaru’s Chris Brown had one hand on the trophy after skiing one at 11m-55km/h in round one, but had to settle for second place in the end.

Gavin Green skied consistently for third, but the upset came from George Donaldson, who twice skied on to the 13m line at 58km/h, with 4 and 4.5 buoys to claim the men’s title.

George followed up with two stunning trick runs for the weekend’s top-score.

The jump event also produced plenty of personal bests, and, unfortunately, some crashes with the boat travelling more than 51km/h as the skiers cut

hard at the ramp.

Karl Donaldson set the target with a jump of 40.9m before Cody Gibson withdrew after a fall and Hugh Donaldson followed suit.

Hugh had a 38.6m jump and was gunning for another big one from his third which resulted in a crash to end his weekend’s skiing.

Chief judge Janeen Donaldson said the event produced a fine weekend of skiing, with plenty of good local support. “(There was) Lots of great skiing with plenty of action for the crowd of supporters who came along,” she said.

Jamie Robertson secured a home town victory as the Tinwald Cycling Club travelled to the foothills to contest a 45km handicap event around the roads of Methven.

The Dean Cooksley Memorial Trophy was up for grabs, presented in memory of Cooksley, who was a renowned cyclist at the highest level, and a proud Methven local.

Robertson and his co-markers found the front on the final lap, but had plenty of work to do to keep a charging group of back markers at bay.

Robertson made a break inside the final 3km with only Kristine Marriott able to go with him.

They had an eight second advantage on the line with Robertson winning the sprint finish to take victory from Marriott, while Dean Longhurst rode strongly to secure the final podium position.

Gary Weston rode himself in to some good late season form, claiming fourth place.

Scratch rider Michael Templeton took fastest time honours covering the distance in 66.14 ahead of co-markers Tony Ward and Darryl Kircher.

The juniors and division two contested a 15km handicap event. Madison Clark had a storming ride to deservedly take line honours and the winner’s spoils, but Maddi Lowry was hot on her tail to secure the second place ribbon.

Oliver Davidson’s recent block of solid training paid off, taking third place and securing fastest time honours, riding the course in 28.58.

Connie Davidson took fourth place from Suzie Leech and Emma Begg, while Beth Begg claimed division two spoils from Michael Clark and Hillary Singlewood, with Janette Hooper lifting fastest time honours.

Next week the club travels to Rakaia to contest a 50km handicap event.

Lewis Dray’s lead at the top of the 250 Production Series ladder was reduced to 14 points in round three of the New Zealand Superbike Championships at Timaru’s

International Raceway last weekend.

Jacob Stroud, who is the son of nine-time national superbike champion Andrew Stroud, is Dray’s closest rival, and with one round remaining, it’s set to go right

down to the wire. The 19-year-old produced two good rides to finish in second place in his opening race and third in his second, but Stroud took the chequered flag in both, to more than halve the point deficit between the two.

Dray will next be in action for round four in Auckland, where he will lock horns with Stroud on his home track.

“I’ve just got to try and win a race to win the title and my aim is to beat him (Stroud) on his

home ground,” said Dray.

“I’m just going to have to use my brain a bit more and try to outsmart him.”

Dray will compete in round four at Hampton Downs on March 5 and 6.
