Champion waterskier Hugh Donaldson of Ashburton lost consciousness after crashing in competitions at Lake Hood on Saturday, and is now recovering at home. The 16-year-old Ashburton College pupil, who competes internationally and is ranked number one overall boys in New Zealand, is counting his lucky stars that he has come out well from his first major crash.

Hugh was competing in the annual Aquafest tournament at Lake Hood when the accident happened, around midday. He had achieved a length of 38.6 metres in the under 17 boys’ jump event, and was aiming for a length of over 40.9 metres, earlier achieved by his older brother Karl, for his third and final jump of the day.
