DOC worker dies on Mt Somers A volunteer Department of Conservation worker, in his first week in the role, died on Mt Somers over the weekend. Calvin Lim, 29, had just begun his job as the warden at the popular Woolshed Creek Hut and was reported as being overdue at 4.30pm on Friday after last being seen on Thursday afternoon. He wasn’t involved in his hut-related duties at the time, but believed to be out for a walk. Phone polling was undertaken over a couple of hours and it indicated that his phone was at one location. Searches were undertaken by police, Department of Conservation staff and
LandSar teams. A helicopter carrying search and rescuers discovered Lim’s body just before 10pm. “It appears he has fallen near Pinnacles Hut,” a police statement said. Lim, a student at the University of Canterbury, was studying for a PhD and was described on Newstalk ZB by the Department of Conservation’s South Island operations director, Andy Roberts, as being “really excited” about his new role. “It’s just a very, very sad situation,” Roberts said. “It seems he was out for a walk, he was

off the track … he’s been up on the side of Mt Somers and fallen in a very bluffy area.” The fall was estimated to have been around 30 metres. In an official statement, the department said that they would conduct their own investigations into what happened to Lim. “DOC are devastated by this tragic loss of life and are focusing on support of his partner and family,” they said. “(DOC) will be reviewing the tragic incident to determine what happened.” Police stated that the death had been referred to the coroner.
