Fan changes name to Darth Vader Darth Vader is a tattooed 43-year-old former Marine who owns a gym and is raising funds online for a bone marrow transplant. The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports that a western New York man legally changed his name last year to match the villain in the Star Wars films. The former Eric Welch, of Canandaigua, says he grew up in foster homes and didn’t have strong family ties to his name. The Star Wars fan says he chose Darth Vader for his new name because the character carries an aura of leadership and toughness. He tests his own toughness by competing in half-marathons and endurance events. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2002. A spokeswoman for the Department of Motor Vehicles confirms that Darth Vader is his legal name.

Christmas quackers Eight little ducklings nearly ended up down the drain but for the efforts of Christchurch firefighters yesterday. A young woman walking in Marshland spotted the ducklings’ frantic mother near a stormwater drain on Te Rito Street about 8.45am. Upon closer inspection she spotted eight ducklings trapped about 1m down beneath the drain grate unable to get out, St Albans Fire Station station officer Peter McArdle said. She got other passersby to help but they were unable to lift the heavy grate, so she called the Fire Service. McArdle said once they got the grate up, a firefighter leaned down into the drain, with his colleagues holding his lower body so he didn’t fall in, too. The firefighter scooped all eight ducklings into a bucket and reunited them with their mother. “She was beside herself, running around and making all sorts of noises. When we got them out she was delighted,” he said. They waddled off to enjoy their Christmas in safer surrounds. - NZME

Hundreds of well-wishers are expected to gather hoping to catch a glimpse of Prince George as the British royal family attend their traditional Christmas Day church service. Led by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, senior members of the family will make their way from Sandringham House to St Mary Magdalene Church for the traditional service which is held every year on the Norfolk estate. It is thought unlikely that Princess Charlotte will join them due to her age but it is possible George, who was christened at the church in July, will be present. The Queen arrived in Norfolk by train last week to oversee preparations for Christmas Day on the estate.

A sleigh-full of presents isn’t the only special delivery to roll in this festive season, as the West Coast welcomes a rare kiwi. West Coast Wildlife Centre owner Richard Benton announced a rare rowi kiwi chick had hatched. The as-yet-unnamed chick is the 200th to arrive since the Franz Josef-based centre, which is open to the public, began operating five years ago, Mr Benton said. “The chick has a wonderfully festive white cluster of feathers under its chin, like a Santa beard.” Rowi are the world’s rarest kiwi; less than 450 remain in the wild. The latest hatching is from the fourth egg this season from the nest of male kiwi Beebop, an unknown female and a female known as Baldy. “This three-way breeding partnership has been in place now for quite some time.” The chick will stay in a brooder at the centre for about a month before being moved to an outdoor pen at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch. Once it has adapted to life outdoors and is foraging well for food, it will be moved to Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds. The kiwi will eventually return to the Okarito kiwi sanctuary, Mr Benton said. - NZME

Christmas, with a difference It felt like a normal Christmas for Dame Diane Robertson yesterday. But it wasn’t. The long-time boss of Auckland City Mission has helped bring Christmas joy to thousands of families for the past 22 years. Yesterday, the retiring chief executive spent Christmas Day with her own family. After helping set up yesterday’s City Mission Christmas lunch for 2000 people, she left to enjoy Christmas with her family, including 2-year-old granddaughter Lily Holt. “It’s fantastic,” she said, when asked what it was like to share a first Christmas with Lily. Dame Diane was happy to leave the Viaduct Events Centre in the hands of the more than 500 volunteers, making her way out as the public began filing in at 11.30am. “It’s an amazing day made by volunteers.” - NZME

‘Drive safely over holidays’ Mid Canterbury holiday-goers are being warned not to use passing lanes as an excuse to speed. During the official holiday period roads around Mid Canterbury would be busier due to people heading away on holiday or to see family. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said there is nothing in the law that allows for motorists to speed in passing lanes. “Double passing lanes are not an excuse to drag race your vehicle.”

Motorists needed to use common sense when overtaking and still had to observe the 100km/h speed limit. Throughout December and January police in Ashburton would have their numbers bolstered as part of an initiative, Operation Capricorn, involving Mid and North Canterbury and Christchurch city. Extra police from Christchurch would be sent to help target alcohol-related crime and drinkdriving. There would also be patrol

cars and undercover cars dotted around the district. Police in Mid Canterbury would also be taking part in the national police campaign against speeding and would be enforcing the 4km/h speed threshold throughout December and January. Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss was also encouraging road users to do the right thing and travel safely over the summer holidays. “The Kiwi road trip, a great holiday tradition, often involves

travelling long distances on unfamiliar roads. “Anyone getting behind the wheel can help keep themselves, their loved ones and other road users safe by following the rules and applying common sense.” People needed to remember to wear a seatbelt, drive within the speed limit, drive sober, take regular breaks, be patient and drive to the conditions. The official holiday period began at 4pm on Thursday, December 24 and ends at 6am on Tuesday, January 5.

About 2000 people are expected to flock to Rods at Methven tomorrow. Hosted by Ashburton’s Americar Rod and Custom Club and held outside the Blue Pub every second year, the event will run from 10am to 3pm with a $5 per adult and $2 per child admission fee. Proceeds go to the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade. “There will be lots of chrome, lots of sparkly stuff,” said one of the organisers, Annmarie McCloy of Methven. She will be taking her 1929 Model A Ford while fellow organiser Gerard McCloy will be bringing along their daughter Rachael’s 1938 Ford Sedan. Hot rod owners will bring their vehicles from around the South Island to show alongside classic cars, motorbikes and custom cars. Many will remain on the following day to participate in a rally. Among highlights will be a 1940s Willys truck from Christchurch, which is new to the road since being converted. Tappet cover racing will be part of the day, and there will be a fireman’s choice and Blue Pub choice prizes awarded.

Boy, 3, drowns at Hastings beach A 3-year-old boy has died in a lagoon at Ocean Beach near Hastings, police have confirmed. The child was at the beach with extended family and friends and died at the scene after being found by family in the estuary. A police spokesman said the incident was “very tragic”. Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s programmes and service manager for the central region Jacob Davies said two guards were called to the scene. “They did CPR for 40 to 45 minutes with the assistance of other members of the public until they were taken over by the fire crew and the helicopter.” The child’s body was flown to Hawke’s Bay Hospital by the local rescue helicopter service. Mr Davies said people must watch children at all times when they were in the water. - NZME

Fatal crash victim was talented firefighter BY SUSAN SANDYS

A man killed in a Mt Somers car crash on Wednesday night was a talented volunteer firefighter. Thirty-six-year-old James McLellan, known as Joe, had joined the Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade about eight months ago after taking up a limeworks job in the area. Brigade deputy chief Ann Shepherd said yesterday Mr McLellan had been an “amazing man”. He had come to the area from Murchison where his family were staying until they got themselves sorted. “He had been the deputy chief in Murchison and when he came to work over here we were lucky enough to get him,” Ms Shepherd said. “He was a very talented firefighter. He was just an amazing man really, brilliant sense of humour, a great father, he loved his children dearly. “We’re all pretty gutted, it just won’t be quite the same without Joe,” Ms Shepherd said. Murchison Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Paul Wilkins said every weekend when Mr McLellan visited his family, he would still turn out to the brigade’s fire calls. “I always said to him ‘if the buzzer goes, grab your gear’. When he was home he could still run with us,” Mr Wilkins said. He had been highly intelligent, and the brigade’s deputy for five years. He and Mr McLellan had supported each other through a run of fatal car crashes about three years ago. He was survived by two step daughters as well as his two children, and his wife had now lost two husbands, the first having been killed in an industrial accident. Mr McLellan is also missed by the Murchison Rugby Club, which called the accident “heartbreaking” on its Facebook page. Police said Mr McLellan had been staying at a friend’s place in the Ashburton Gorge while undertaking contracted work in the area. He was thrown from the Toyota Hilux ute he was driving after it rolled about 10.45pm. His two children aged six and seven, who had been wearing their seatbelts, climbed out of the vehicle. Distressed and injured, they stayed near the vehicle and were discovered by a passing motorist who alerted emergency services. The children were taken by ambulance to hospital but have since been discharged and are recovering at home. Acting road policing manager Senior Sergeant Scott Richardson in Christchurch said it was heartbreaking the children would be left with the enduring memory of losing their father at Christmas. “He would likely still be alive had he been wearing a seatbelt,” Mr Richardson said. Speed had been a factor in the crash, and police were also investigating whether alcohol was involved.

Long-serving caretaker retires By RuBy HaRfield

Methven Primary School’s longstanding caretaker will have more time on his hands after he locked up his tools for the last time on Wednesday. Pete Rusbatch has decided to retire after 27 years as caretaker of the school. Mr Rusbatch said he would miss his job but wanted to spend more time fishing, gardening, reading and cycling. “I’ve been a fishing man all my life but in the last 10 years I haven’t had time to do it as much as I’d like.” He also hoped to spend more time with his three children and four grandchildren, soon to be five. He first came to the school as caretaker after working at the Highbank Power Station and thought he would be there only for a few years. “I’ve enjoyed my time here, I wouldn’t have stayed here that long if I didn’t.” He would miss the students the

most – their cheerfulness, their innocence and their brutal honesty. “The kids are delightful.” One of his favourite events was the school’s sports day, which always took a lot of work to prepare the grounds. “Sports day was always a highlight.” He was initially in charge of shot put but after three years he needed a change, so was put on the finish line of the track. However, his new role did not last long after a disagreement between himself and two other judges about who came second in a race got him banished to discus, where he has been ever since. Mr Rusbatch has seen the school go from a roll of 160 and falling, to now about 300 and rising. Throughout this, his day-to-day job remained relatively the same having to deal with keeping the place tidy, rubbish, recycling and doing minor repairs. The school held a morning tea for Mr Rusbatch and his last official day was December 23.

All goals achieved in a progressive, interesting year A self-proclaimed “doer” rather than someone that sits back and watches, Ashburton GP spokeswoman Charlotte Cox said her year has been a busy one. “I’ve had an interesting year and a progressive year and I have achieved what I have set out to do,” she said. Although she started out as one of three doctors – and the only female – at Moore Street Medical Centre, Dr Cox has ended the year in her own practice, Ashburton Health First. Located across from the Ashburton Police Station, the practice ties in with her husband Justin Wall’s dental surgery around the corner. The duo originally planned to build their own dual practice on Burnett Street earlier this year.

Each year a general practitioner is elected to be the GP spokesman or woman and speak on issues in the community. This year, Dr Charlotte Cox was the chosen one and she talks to health reporter Caitlin Porter about her year.

Charlotte Cox At the time Dr Cox said dentistry and medicine were “very much symbiotic” and there were countless examples of GPs and dentists

working together. Unfortunately, the consent process for the new build was slow and instead Dr Cox decided to open her own practice. Ashburton Health First still works in conjunction with Dr Wall’s dental surgery, the two share a practice manager and some front-line staff – something that works well. The plan eventually though is to expand to a larger complex equipped with several consulting

rooms, she said. “They’re something you can never have enough of,” she said. Only four months in and things are tracking well, Dr Cox has even taken on a part-time GP to help balance the 2100 patient workload. She said she likes the complex business side of primary care and to own your own practice a sense of business nous is needed. “I see myself as a businesswoman,” she explained.

Pleased to have been this year’s spokesperson, Dr Cox said she enjoyed the role and believed it was one of great importance. A region with a transient health workforce and many district health board-employed staff, it was important GPs were asked for their opinion, she said. “We do see what is going on and we know a lot.” * Next year’s GP spokesperson is Dr Mick Tarry of Sealy Street Medical Centre.

Helping kids help our planet A

s a young mum in the late 1980s, Sheryl Stivens would look over the fence to the school next door and be concerned about what she could see. She and husband Hal were organic farmers living near Willowby School, where their two sons were enrolled. Her concerns were centred not around how the children were being educated – that was being done to a high standard, she said – rather they related to the school environment. Sprays would be used to kill weeds in the schoolyard and valuable food scraps would be thrown out. “I wanted them to find another way,” Mrs Stivens said. The day she suggested to teachers she work with students to find that way, became the first day in a future that has helped change how Mid Cantabrians and New Zealanders deal with waste. She led chemical-free school gardening activities, established worm farms and recycling activities, and helped clear and plant the Willowby reserve. Mrs Stivens did not stop at Willowby, which later merged with other schools on the site to become Longbeach.

Mid Canterbury’s own eco-warrior Sheryl Stivens is going back to the future and educating children in schools about how to minimise and utilise waste. Susan Sandys reports. With over 25 schools in the district, she wanted to reach them all. This would not have been easy for most people. It was the early 1990s and environmentalism was often considered a fringe concept. And Mrs Stivens was a passionate advocate, herself having recently taken part in Ashburton’s first ever environmental protest. With fellow Mid Canterbury Soil and Health members she had hit the streets with “Save the Bees” placards, in response to chemical applicators parading machinery in the town. However, with the courage of her convictions, she approached the Ashburton District Council and proposed a school education programme. The council could see the value of beginning to address the big issue of waste, and approved $45 per month for fuel and other expenses. Soon there were various bins for different types of waste, and

worm farms, popping up in school grounds across the district. Students learned about the importance of the environment and their place in it, and how things they did in their daily life had an effect on the world. Following further discussions with the council, Mrs Stivens established Wastebusters in 1994, alongside Anita Coghill of Methven. Its recycling programmes and community and school education initiatives provided training and employment at a time when unemployment was at an all-time high. The community trust is still going strong today as a major player in Mid Canterbury-wide recycling programmes and community and school education. In 1999 Mrs Stivens received a study grant from Lincoln University to improve her knowledge of organic waste and worm farming, and in 2004 she received government funding to travel to five countries and view innovative ways of reducing waste.

She resigned from Wastebusters in 2010, and later that year when Mastagard won the district’s waste disposal contract she returned to a local educator’s role and developed resources for the Mastagard schools’ programme. The programme is now delivered to more than 100 schools and preschools in Ashburton, Waimakariri and Hurunui. Last year she went back to the future, returning to working in schools, delivering the schools’ programme for Envirowaste, after it purchased Mastagard. “I thought I would just go back out there, where I started in 1993 and work with teachers and students in our local schools to hopefully make a difference longterm,” Mrs Stivens said. “Because everything we do affects somebody or something, it helps with behaviour change.” The enthusiasm and ideas that Mid Canterbury pupils have, from preschool to high school age, never cease to inspire Mrs Stivens. Students brainstorm on how

to use waste from their food technology classes. They upcycle fabric and packaging waste, and present PowerPoint talks on saving water and growing vegetables. The latest trend is a more modern form of composting called bokashi. “One of my favourite parts of being back in schools working with children and teachers is brainstorming how we might re-think and re-design the way we live, and the products and materials we use, so we have a more resource-efficient, cleaner planet to enjoy,” Mrs Stivens said. Her efforts at the grassroots level are linking in with work she undertakes on a national context. She is a member of the New Zealand Waste Advisory Board, representing a wide range of industries and local bodies examining how the country deals with its waste. To free up some time she recently resigned from the Ashburton Zone Water Committee after being appointed to it in 2008.

nother year, another Christmas. Presents have been unwrapped, wrapping paper put in the recycling bin and gifts are being enjoyed. The effects of the excesses of that one day of celebration will linger in stomachs and minds for a while, but inevitably the day gets filed in our Christmas memory banks, becoming just one more Christmas. But for the many who attended this year’s community Christmas lunch, the glow of their shared Christmas is likely to linger for some time. The event has become an established part of Christmas in the Ashburton District. It has grown from small beginnings and today for many people that shared meal makes the difference between a Christmas that would have been marked by loneliness or hardship and one that has the trappings of everything Christmas is truly about. The event is months in the planning and it wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of community groups and individuals who give their time and effort to make Christmas a whole lot brighter for hundreds of people. Without the people who are willing to take time out of their own Christmas Day to cook and serve food, there would be no community lunches. What they do is quite extraordinary, given that Christmas is one of the few days in the year when the world virtually stops to allow people to have their own special family time. Community lunches are the true spirit of Christmas in action. In some parts of New Zealand community lunches have been canned because those running the events believed they had moved away from their original intent, providing a meal for people who were alone or who could not afford a special Christmas meal. In Blenheim, after running for 20 Christmases, this year’s meal has been cancelled. People were turning up simply because they couldn’t be bothered cooking at home, others had become demanding when it came to meal service and what was served. The true spirit had gone and the community lunch had become another, albeit free, restaurant for some. Ashburton’s lunch is an all-comers event, no questions are asked. Let’s hope ours retains the true spirit of Christmas and does not assume a spirit of entitlement.

ith great anticipation children wait for Christmas, wondering what wrapping paper hides. Will they get what they dream of or a surprise and even better. For many parents there is a mixed sense of pleasure and frustration, on this day when there is no work and no school, children beat the sun up and the dreamed of sleep vanishes in an excess of excitement, noise and exclamations. Only Grandad would give a plastic trumpet! Some families like mine had to wait until after Church and lunch before opening presents. I was never sure if the long wait increased the appreciation or just the frustration. God sent His Son wrapped up in a young lass named Mary to be unwrapped and placed in a

feed trough in Bethlehem. The first to come and see the gift were shepherds. Simeon and Anna, two elderly watchers, saw Him as a new baby at the temple in Jerusalem and were content. Wise men, seekers and searchers came bringing worship and gifts to the young child. This gift, foretold in great detail over many centuries by prophets, this most precious of all gifts ever given arrived almost unnoticed by those it was given too and for. Yet those who looked, who

searched who dreamt, found Him, then and today it is still the same for us. Christmas is a time when we give gifts, copying the Giver of the greatest of all Gifts. As we do that let us also look for the Gift of God, His Son Jesus Christ. A gift above all gifts, a gift that will change our life, fill us with Hope, with Love, with Joy and Peace. He will accept us just as we are and never cease being a gift to those who desire and seek Him. The challenge of this Christmas is to join the Shepherds and seek the Gift. Save the Children shop closed After nearly 40 years Ashburton’s Save the Children shop has closed its doors. The closure, on Christmas Eve, affected 80 volunteers. Save the Children had been retailing for 36 years in Ashburton, first opening in the Ashburton Arcade. In a statement, president Liz Quaid said there will still be a Save the Children branch in Ashburton, however fundraising will be done in a different way and discussions were ongoing about this.

It’s effective teaching practice that makes the difference O

k, so I could finish my column for the year with a nice story about how a child achieved even though they were disadvantaged in some way. But I won’t. Or I could write up a recount of all the highlights of the year as a reminder that I did some work – but I’m not in that sort of mood. Or I could have a minor conniption at Novopay again because they have stuffed up someone’s holiday pay – but that’s too easy to write about. I could have finished with some rollicking spun-out anecdote about a kid, I’m not going to, but I will share this little gem with you. A child was sent to me for the following offence – Billy Baggypants pulled down his undies while changing, danced in the changing rooms and sang “I’m sexy and I know it!” This is true and happened this year. Obviously the name is changed to protect the identity of the undies. No, what I’m going to do is put out a completely unsubstantiated opinion and challenge any school to prove me wrong. Modern learning environments are simply refurbished classrooms with bright furniture made in China, from woodchip we sold to them at bargain basement prices. I have not yet met a parent, teacher or principal that can emphatically point to the change in learning environments as making any difference to the rate at which a child learns. I think you could paint everything pink and dress it with candy-striped furniture and you would have no more or less impact on a child’s learning, than any school that says they are converting to modern learning

environments because it makes a difference. I have been asked a number of times about modern learning environments and believe it is a gimmick. Schools must have sound and clear reasons why they should drastically alter classrooms. What I can substantiate and report on, is that teachers who set out to improve the learning in their classroom by constantly questioning their own practice, do make a difference. This year two teachers in our school deliberately targeted children who were below in relation to national standards. They did not ask for new furniture, iPads, more teacher aid hours, a wall to be taken down, fewer children to teach, better behaved children or parents to clean up their home life. What they did do was constantly ask themselves, “Is what I am doing making a difference to the rate at which children are learning?” In order for children to catch up from below, to meeting or exceeding standards, they must accelerate their learning for the year. So what was the outcome? Every child in the target groups made progress at a rate that was quicker than anything they had made before. Some children had exceeded the standard by the end of the year, most had met the standard, and a few made significant

progress, but were still not at the standard. This is not new stuff. As a school we have taken part in two years of ministry programmes aimed at lifting rates of progress. I know this happens in other schools as well. Our New Zealand curriculum expects teachers to inquire of their practice – it is called Teaching as Inquiry. So in 2016, our school heads into a community of learning in Ashburton with other schools. In order for our high school students to be prepared, our primary and intermediate schools must do the best they can. No fancy furniture and big open classroom spaces will have any effect. The real challenge is for teachers to do better. I believe schools should drop the publicity stunts about “modern learning environments” and start collaborating about “effective teaching practice”. The opportunity a community of learning offers is huge and will be a positive focus for Ashburton education. There is also the opportunity for teachers to challenge themselves and each other about what they are doing, that makes a difference to a child’s learning. Right – have a typical Christmas, may your Christmas cracker jokes be written in Chringrish (Chinese English), may your sunburn be in the shape of a hickey and, most of all, may you take the opportunity to dance in your undies while singing: “I’m sexy and I know it.” Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. Glaze ideas: There are many suitable prepared sauces and mustards available that are ideal for using as glazes such as sweet mustard, apricot and cranberry or try one of the following:

■ Carefully remove the skin by running your clean fingers under the skin and peeling back to leave a smooth layer of fat. With a sharp knife cut this layer into a criss-cross pattern. Spread over your preferred glaze and place on a rack in a large roasting pan. Secure cloves, (or cherries or whatever), at the corner of each criss-cross. ■ To glaze and serve cold – bake at 180°C for 35 to 40 minutes, brushing occasionally with the glaze. Cool, cover and store in refrigerator until served. ■ To cook and serve hot – cook at 160°C, allowing 20 minutes per kg, brushing occasionally with the glaze. Smallbore rifle shooter Lanelle Millar-McArthur has been on target in 2015, and has an impressive trophy haul to prove it. The sharpshooting starlet took out Mid Canterbury and Aoraki awards this year, and even represented New Zealand against Great Britain in Wanganui, but what makes those feats even more impressive is that she only

took up the sport in 2014. The 15-year-old first took to the range to fill in for her big sister Savanna, and hasn’t looked back since. The Ashburton College student started out in the C grade, but will take on a new challenge in 2016 after achieving a high enough score to be eligible for the B grade. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union has announced that Craig Dunlea and James Jowsey have been appointed as co-coaches of the Heartland side for the 2016 campaign. Jowsey joins the union after coaching AS Rugby Milano in the Italian second division, having previously coached Lincoln club division one side and Lincoln University. He is also a World Rugby level three coach and accredited coach educator. Dunlea steps up from his assistant role to Grant Keenan last season having previously coached Rakaia to wins in the Watters Cup, and is also an accredited coach educator. Mid Canterbury Rugby’s chief executive officer Ian Patterson said it was pleasing to have the two former professionals at the helm for the coming season. “We are very pleased to have Craig and James on board for 2016, they are both highly skilled coaches and their skills and experience complement each other very well,” he said. “They will make a very important contribution toward building on the recent success of the union on and off the field.” Patterson said that planning for the 2016 season is well under way and without the added demands of a shield challenge next year, the Heartland coaches will be working closely with the union’s senior club coaches throughout the season to assist them and their players in their ongoing development. The team will again be managed by Tony Harrison, who joined the union in 2013, and Patterson is confident the right personnel are in place for continued progression. “Our Heartland squad must continue to develop if we are to continue to be successful in the increasingly competitive Heartland competition,” he said. “The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union sees Craig (Dunlea), James (Jowsey) and Tony (Harrison) as having a significant role in the development of the game at both club and representative levels.”
