A lifetime of farm equipment changes hands

There were buyers, lookers and those who came just for a yarn, but on Friday, the Methven farm that has been McKay land for around 90 years was the busiest place in the district.

Its third family owner, Angus McKay, sold up last month for a record breaking $8.25 million, setting a new record for arable land in the district of $57,112 per hectare, and Friday’s clearing sale was the final step in severing his ties with Three Springs Farm.

The 144 hectare property is now in the hands of neighbour cropping farmer Richard Watson.

On sale were a lifetime and a generation or two of farming memorabilia and equipment.

And most of it found ready buyers.

As he watched the sale, McKay said he was pleased to see there were at least a couple of bidders for most items. It all had to go, he said.

If the farm sale broke records, then the clearing sale must have come close in terms of numbers.

There were more than 200 registered bidders and more than double that in people who were just out for a day in the sun.

Among the crowd were plenty of seasoned cockies. Some were keeping an eye out for a bargain, but others said they had just turned up to see who was there and to catch up with neighbours.

If you wanted a bargain you had to be quick. The Rural Livestock team were slick. They chased bids but didn’t give buyers time to be tardy. You were in or out. Hundreds of lots had to be sold during the afternoon; nod at the wrong time and it was yours.

It was also an opportunity for farmers of yesteryear to sit in the sun and reminisce. Some remained collectors of old farm equipment and were keeping a close eye on selected items – rust and all – others were happy to sit in the sun and yarn.

Buyers came from across Canterbury and many came with trailers – just in case.

For many, the chance to check out a clearing sale was an all too rare treat these days.

While some farm sales result in a shed clean-out, with so many dairy farms, all the gear often goes with the sale, one farmer said.

“We used to have two or three to choose from a week, but there’s nothing like that now,” another said.

Farmers raise $25 million

Farmers on the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme have raised $25 million to buy out the scheme, which they have owned jointly with EA Networks since 2010.

BCI general manager John Wright said the capital share raise process had been highly successful and would give the farmer cooperative 100 per cent control of the irrigation scheme.

“The board and I are ecstatic with the support we have gained from our shareholders. It shows great confidence in the strategy of the co-operative.”

At the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Limited annual meeting this week chairman Malcolm Cairns acknowledged the support of EA Networks in developing the scheme in 2010 and managing the significant growth since.

“The relationship between BCI

and EA Networks has been an extremely positive one, and that will continue after this transaction,” he said.

The BCI scheme distribution network has tripled in size since 2010, delivering irrigation water to around 20,000ha of Mid Canterbury arable, wintering and dairy farmland.

The 200km pipe network delivers pressurised water to around 150 BCIL shareholders and in-

cludes a small hydro generation facility in the Rakaia River.

Wright said 80 per cent of the irrigator shareholders had invested in the capital raise, which closed this week with in excess of $25 million.

Subject to meeting a number of conditions, the farmer co-operative will purchase EA Networks’ 50 per cent share at the end of September.

In return for committing new

capital to the scheme, those shareholders will have their annual water charges reset at a lower level.

Wright said this would make their own businesses more sustainable and resilient.

EA Networks’ share will be bought for $26m and Wright confirmed the company had borrowing in place to complete the transaction and build a new storage lake on Barkers Road.

Road safety around skifields in spotlight

New road named A new road in the Oakleigh subdivision that lies between Tarbotton Road and Melcombe Street will be called Roxburgh Place. This is the maiden name of one of the property owners mother and the location of land with family ties in Scotland.

The Ashburton District Council gave the name its approval at Thursday’s environmental services committee meeting.

Drivers will notice an increased police presence around Mt Hutt and all Mid Canterbury’s alpine roads for the rest of the month.

NZTA and the police have joined forces for Operation Hotoke – a national road safety campaign tackling haphazard driving practices in alpine areas.

They want to raise awareness of ski-season driving risks such as tiredness, alcohol and changing conditions, by working around entrances and feeder roads to the country’s major skifields.

“It might be the tail end of winter and some people might think they don’t have to take as much care,” Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Team manager Bruce O’Brien said.

“But the risks are still there.”

O’Brien was working at Mt Hutt when the operation kicked off this week, and said it was important to remember that all crashes were preventable.

“Fatigue is a big one – if people are up the mountains for hours we want to remind them to take breaks and stop for meals.”

“We also want to see people driving to the conditions, watching their speed and using constraints,” he said.

“And if people are enjoying a drink up the mountain we want them to be acutely aware of putting a plan in place, getting a sober driver … the last thing we want to see is that they didn’t get home safely.”

He also said drivers should keep an eye out

Operation Hotoke focus is to put the spotlight on what police already working to achieve nationally, and O’Brien said he was pleased with the “good behaviour” his team had seen so far on Mt Hutt.

Gaps in rural dog registration

The number of registered dogs in the Ashburton District could be a long way from telling the true story on dog numbers, says district councillor Neil Brown.

While the council’s books show 6530 registered dogs in the district, if dog contractors visited every rural property, that number would be well short of reality, he said.

“Nine out of 10 rural properties would have unregistered dogs.

The other day I was on a farm and two dogs came up to me and neither of them had collars or tags.”

Knowing how many dogs were in the district and where they lived was a critical tool for the council if there was ever an outbreak of a canine disease, Brown said.

“It’s a fact, unregistered dogs happen a lot in rural areas and a focus should be put on chasing these up because we know they’re out there.”

The council visited properties where it knew there were dogs that had been registered one year and not the next, environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said.

“Through the year there is an

opportunity for these people to pay late fees before infringement fees kick in,” he said.

Over a year checks were run on about 200 properties and the council’s contractor also door knocked properties randomly in an effort to identify where there were unregistered dogs, Catchpowle said.

Failing to register a dog could see a dog owner hit with a $300 fine and failure to notify the council if an address changed, $100.

control, but the issue of wandering dogs was a growing problem, with more than 700 complaints last year.

Catchpowle puts this down to an entrenched Kiwi attitude towards dog freedom.

“Historically this has been a problem in New Zealand. There is a belief with some people that they can let dogs out at night and then open the door in the morning and in they’ll trot,” Catchpowle said.

Education and increasing awareness of the requirement to have a dog under control was ongoing, he said.

The teenager accused of fatally stabbing another woman at a Christchurch house party earlier this month was named for the first time yesterday. Katrina Epiha, 18, had name suppression lapse at the High Court in Christchurch yesterday. She has been charged with murdering Alicia Maree Nathan, also known as Alicia Maree Robinson, who died at an Avonhead Road house on August 5. Yesterday defence counsel Trudi Aickin asked that Epiha be remanded in custody without plea.

Continuation of name suppression was not sought.

IRD scam warning Inland Revenue is warning people to watch out for a sophisticated email tax scam going around. An email, which looks like it may be from Inland Revenue, is a phishing scam, as it asks the recipient for financial information claiming they have a tax refund waiting for them, according to Inland Revenue.

The email address appears as Inland Revenue Department but is actually sent from a different email address, IRDxxxxx@s1.nzr.review, which looks convincing, but is false. A form is also attached, but Inland Revenue urges recipients not to open it.

Exposure charge A man has been arrested after allegedly indecently exposing himself to two teenagers on a train in Auckland. The incident happened on August 12, and the man was charged with indecent exposure yesterday. He will appear in Auckland District Court on September 7. Police are still investigating the matter and are not ruling out further charges.

Wilding pines eradication to continue

They were planted with the best of intentions but pine trees that provided shelter and to stabilise hillsides are now costing New Zealand millions of dollars in wilding conifer eradication programmes.

Last year $7 million was spent nationally on eradication work with $4.1 million of that spent in Canterbury. This year $6.3 million has been allocated with $2.7 million coming into the Canterbury region.

MPI national operations manager for the wilding pines project, Alan Tinnelly on Thursday gave Ashburton District councillors a run down on the programme in the Ashburton District.

Over a four year period $16 million was being poured into eradication across the country with the main focus on the greater Canterbury area stretching from Molesworth in the north and into northern Southland.

“The picture of wilding pine infestation is quite alarming across the country,” Tinnelly said.

And that meant eradication had to be carried out by a co-ordinated approach through the Department of Conservation, Ministry of Primary Industries, Land Infor-

Those groups were all involved because the pine problem was one without boundaries, they were no respecter of land ownership, Tinnelly said.

The eradication programme is fought by helicopter and on foot but technology was increasingly helping in accessing more remote areas and in ensuring more

ground was covered more quickly.

Over two million hectares is affected by wilding conifers, he said and in the first two years of the current programme, the focus was on scattered trees rather than dense blocks.

It could take just five years for a pine seedling to become a problem tree, Tinnelly said.

“You can chop the trees down but if you leave a single needle it

will grow back into a tree so it’s important to stump spray.”

For the wilding pine control team it was important to have support from regional and local authorities and it was important to have buy in from private land owners too, he said.

“We do ask for a contribution from private land owners. It’s very low but we’re getting pretty mixed reactions. We’d like to think that if

one land owner is spending a lot of money on control his neighbours will be chipping in too.”

The problem was not confined solely to wilding pines, Douglas firs were also creating issues with uncontrolled spread, Tinnelly said.

“It might have big commercial value but it starts seeding at eight years and it’s not milled until it’s 40 or 50 years.”

District’s economy on go-slow

Across a range of categories in the Infometrics quarterly monitor to June 30, the picture of the Ashburton District economy is one that is flatlining.

And while that’s been the status for most of the year, economists say there are signs that there will be better conditions during the second half of the year. GDP for the year to June 30 was $1.851

million, down 0.1 per cent on the same time last year.

The district’s GDP peaked in September 2012 at 8.1 per cent.

At 2.1 per cent, unemployment continued to run well below the national rate of 5 per cent but job seeker numbers rose by 10.1 per cent.

At the end of June 388 people were receiving job seeker support. This compares to an average of 395 since 2010.

The spending and investment sector might still be falling, but the pace of decline has eased and over a number of areas numbers were moving back into positive.

“A key source of further stablisation will be better returns in the dairy sector at a time when other agricultural returns are healthy,” the report says.

Predator control brings ecological haven in to limelight A remnant of foothill forest with rare limestone outcrops near Mt Somers is being protected thanks to the work of a local landowner and support from the Immediate Steps biodiversity fund.

The work will include a trapping programme to reduce rat, possum and stoat numbers to protect indigenous flora and fauna from predation.

The limestone habitat is home to many rare plants and insects and the small forest is an important stepping stone to a DOC protected land nearby.

Bill English remains as favoured PM Labour leader Jacinda Ardern has eclipsed Andrew Little’s ratings in a poll to rate the most capable person of running the Government but is well behind Prime Minister Bill English.

English is streets ahead of the newcomer and he has improved on his ratings in the Herald-ZB-Kantar TNS poll.

English was rated most capable by 45 per cent of respondents, compared with his rating of 41 per cent in July.

Ardern was rated the most capable by 32 per cent, a huge improvement on the 10 per cent that former Labour leader Andrew Little got last month.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters was rated by 7 per cent, two points lower than in July.

The other party leaders rated either 1 per cent or zero.

A breakdown of the figures shows English is rated most capable disproportionately

by Aucklanders, at 51 per cent (compared with 45 per cent nationwide) and lower by Wellington respondents, 35 per cent.

More men rate him high, 49 per cent, than women, 41 per cent.

He is more favoured by voters aged 60 and over, 53 per cent, compared with those aged 18 to 29, only 32 per cent.

He is rated the most capable by 61 per cent of those earning more than $100,000 and by only 38 per cent of those earning under $50,000.

It is consistent with the feedback we get on the ground, particularly when people can see the link between the benefit for them and their family and a good economy.

Ardern was elected Labour leader on August 1 after the resignation of Little in the face of plummeting polls.

The breakdown shows that while she is 13 points behind English, she is well ahead of him among Wellington voters, with 41 per cent rating her as the most capable of

Bill English running the Government compared with English on 35 per cent.

She also has high support among young voter, low-income voters and single-income households with no children.

English told the Herald that in the end, people voted on issues such as the economy, not just on personality.

“What I think is important is that better economic management matters to the cash in their pockets and the jobs for their kids and the prospect of getting a better income.

“That’s the bit that matters to them. They can believe the economy is going well in general but where we get the positive response is when they see that it matters to them.”

The survey was conducted between August 16 to 21 and the sample size was 1000.

The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 per cent.

It is an online survey by ConsumerLink which runs on the Fly Buys panel of 120,000 active members, one of the largest in New Zealand.

Sampling is nationally representative and is then post-weighted by age, gender and region to match the population but only those aged 18 and over are included.

Alleged shooter remanded in custody Alleged Morrinsville shooter Rollie James Heke is remanded in custody after his court appearance facing attempted murder charges.

The 36-year-old was arrested early on Friday at a home in the Kaingaroa Forest township, south-east of Rotorua, police said.

He is due to reappear in the High Court at Rotorua on September 13.

Officers spent two weeks looking for Heke across the country after he allegedly shot at police with a military-style semiautomatic weapon on August 13 in the Waikato town of Morrinsville.

Police said he was taken into custody without incident after armed officers surrounded a property.

He will be facing eight charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, failing to stop for police and methamphetamine-related offences.

Four other people also appeared in court in relation to the Heke case.

Taupo man Joseph Mananui Long, 33, has appeared on an attempted murder charge, and will also remain in custody until his High Court appearance on September 13.

Rangimaria Haami, 62, has been charged with accessory to murder and has yet to make her bail application but is due

Rollie James Heke back in court on September 13.

Natasha Dawn Telford, 43, from Taupo, has appeared on a accessory to attempted murder charge.

Hamilton woman Monique Jane Eggelton, 29, also appeared on accessory to murder charges.

Telford and Eggelton are also remanded in custody and will appear in the High Court on September 13.

A fifth person, a 43-year-old woman, described by police as an “associate” of Heke’s, was taken into custody as well and will appear in Hamilton on an outstanding warrant.

Labour commits to building new Dunedin hospital Labour has committed to building a new hospital in Dunedin and says if it wins the election construction will start during its first three-year term.

Party leader Jacinda Ardern made the announcement in the city yesterday, saying under a Labour government the hospital would be built without a publicprivate partnership (PPP).

“With Labour’s approach we will have a new hospital as soon as possible,” she said.

The government last week also promised a new hospital for the city at a cost of between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

It said it would consider all funding options, including a PPP, and the Ministry of Health would start looking for a site.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said he favoured a central city location.

Ardern has gone further than that, saying under Labour it would be built in the city centre.

She has also put a $1.4 billion

Jacinda Ardern price tag on it and says there’s enough money in the government’s capital spending allowance to build it without a PPP. “This is a project that is long overdue for Dunedin,” she said.

“The hospital at present is dangerous and unsafe for staff and patients.

“Most of the existing buildings would not survive a severe earthquake.”

Pasifika poet new Poet Laureate Pasifika poet and lecturer Selina Tusitala Marsh has been named New Zealand’s next Poet Laureate.

Marsh, born in 1971, is an Auckland-based poet and scholar of Samoan, Tuvaluan, Scottish and French descent.

Yesterday she was appointed to a two-year tenure in the highly prestigious role, replacing CK Stead.

An Associate Professor and lecturer at the University of Auckland, Marsh was the first Pacific Islander to gain a PhD in English from the university.

Her poetry has been published in more than 70 books and journals and in 2016 she was invited to perform before Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey as Commonwealth Poet on behalf of 53 states.

Alexander Turnbull Library chief librarian Chris Szekely described Marsh as not only an extraordinary poet, but a strong

Marsh called the appointment humbling.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to extend the poetic page and stage to this nation’s multi-coloured, multi-hued voices,” she said.

Along with $80,000 from the National Library to promote poetry and create new work, the Poet Laureate receives a tokotoko, or orator’s stick, symbolising their status.

“Samoans have the to’oto’o, the orator’s staff, a symbol of the authority to speak on behalf of a group. To be recognised in this way is breath-taking,” Marsh said.

“To occupy the role is breathgiving – I can’t wait to take the Laureate’s tokotoko to the people and make poetry.”

The position is appointed biennially by the chief librarian in consultation with an advisory group.

The country’s first poet laureate was Bill Manhire in 1996.

End of an era for When it comes to doing their bit for the community, there are a group of Rakaia seniors who go above and beyond.

Seventeen years ago theirs were the first hands up on the sorting line at the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park and 17 years later, when it’s making its last run, many of the hardy originals are still turning up every Saturday morning. Reporter Sue Newman talks to four people who have played a big part in the district’s recycling chain.

oday is a special day in the life of a group of Rakaia seniors. They’ll sort their last bottles and cans as the village’s resource recovery park becomes part of the Ashburton District’s new kerbside wheelie bin collection service and their park becomes simply another community collection point.

It’s the end of an era for Rakaia and for the sorting stalwarts it’s the end of Saturday morning get-togethers that have become an essential part of the fabric of their social life.

Some are knocking 90, most over 85 but they’re more than happy to roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty with other people’s cast-offs.

Among the group are George and Elma Hobson and Roy and Natalie Gardiner. Their friendship dates back decades and it’s been well and truly cemented over the recycling conveyor line.

Volunteers have their own spot on the chain, training their eyes on single items – brown bottles for one, cans for another.

Good clothing is rescued and given to the Salvation Army and other material cut up into rags.

But it’s about more than sifting through other people’s rubbish, those Saturday mornings are also about friendship, companionship and knowing you’re doing something for your community.

“There’s been some pretty hardcase conversations going on, you know all about the people they know,” George said.

He enjoys working for his community; it’s part of his life and at 90 he can’t see any reason to change now.

He’s not too keen on the changes that are being made to Rakaia’s recycling, however.

“The council never liked to accept that what we took out of the waste stream saved them money,” he said.

His wife Elma joined the team to support her husband but quickly decided if he was starting work at 8am on a Saturday, then she should too.

Roy can’t remember a time when he wasn’t volunteering for something in Rakaia. He reckons he’s done 40 or 50 years on the domain board so when the Lions club wanted volunteers to start the recycling business off, he didn’t think too long before he put his hand up.

“It’s all quite social, it’s a bit of a get-together,” he said.

Over the years they’ve seen a few oddities come down the line – a valid driver’s licence that was reunited with its owner, glasses, unopened boxes of chocolates, the list goes on.

Over the years they’ve mastered the skills needed to sort material on a conveyor belt and remove anything that could be sold in the site shop. Their system is based on a freezing works chain – everyone removes the items they’re in charge of and lets the rest roll down the line to the next picker.

Material is dropped off at the site during the week and stockpiled for the Saturday sorters.

Over the past 17 years through rain, snow, wind, public holidays and family occasions, the team has only missed two Saturdays.

Both of those were caught up on Monday.

They’ve been as committed to the job as full-time, paid employees.

And over the years they’ve refined their processes. In spite of the amount of material increasing significantly, their sorting time has dropped from more than three hours to about one and a quarter.

sorting stalwarts They might be the Saturday regulars, but the volunteers say the whole recycling site owes its life to just one man, Neil Pluck.

The park’s beginnings were small, its inspiration the council’s drive to achieve zero waste for the district by 2020. If that was to happen, locals Neil and Donna Simpson knew Rakaia would have to play its part.

They weren’t prepared to be bit players, Neil and Donna wanted Rakaia to be a star.

“We felt Rakaia should take responsibility for its own rubbish and we had our own ideas about how we could go about getting our rubbish sorted and as much kept from landfill as possible,” Neil said.

Back in 2000 recycling was, at best, rudimentary in Rakaia. There was a town dump, some people composted green waste, others used farm pits to get rid of the things they didn’t want. It was virtually a clean sheet when it came to designing a waste recovery system.

Neil and Donna dreamed big. They weren’t just happy with getting bottles, tins and paper out of the waste stream, they wanted to get food and garden waste out too.

“We came up with a system that would have had the town folk of Rakaia in a cold sweat every time they so much as wanted to throw out a milk bottle. We had bags for this and bags for that, tying up things and not doing this and doing more of that,” Neil said.

If the recycling team had kept going down that path they would have created more waste than they were diverting from landfill.

“In the end we came to our senses and thought, why not just divide the household waste into two bags – one for wet biodegradable putrescible waste and the other for everything else.”

That system started in July 2003 when Rakaia broke new ground in adding two more collection bags to its official kerbside black rubbish bag.

Eventually their composting system had to go, too many rules and too much red tape, but over the years it was in business it provided fertile food for many of Rakaia’s public gardens.

Recycling and sorting had a very Kiwi beginning – tools, boxes, equipment, a conveyor belt were all begged or borrowed and eventually the council came to the party with a purpose-built shed.

“At one stage they questioned if we were building a factory at the park,” Neil said.

The figures tell the story of the recycling team’s success – about 876 weekends worked over those 17 years, over 110 tonne of paper recycled, 558 tonnes of cardboard, 18 tonnes of aluminium cans, 359 tonnes of stubbies, 132 tonnes of fizz

and milk bottles. All that generated by a town of just over 2000.

Today Neil and his team stand in the resource recovery park and talk about the way it was before rubbish became a hot topic.

In the days of the volunteers’ youth, rubbish wasn’t an issue. There were no plastic bags, brown paper bags held whatever needed to be held and were either reused or burned. Food rarely came in cans, it came from the earth or from animals and anything that was packed was stacked in a cardboard box, no non-reusable packaging.

Neil recalls the days when the centre was simply an open tip.

“I remember when the Rakaia River flooded, it used to wash the rubbish away, cans, trucks, drums, old cars, they’d be ripping down the river.”

Over the years, the district council was pretty supportive of Rakaia’s efforts, he said.

“While the material is technically theirs, they were happy for us to sort it, sell it and keep the money for the community. We’ve mostly used it to beautify the town.”

Some months $400 is raised, others $200, but it’s all money Rakaia would not have had without its sorting volunteers. Projects to benefit have been walkways, BMX track, ATS mural and a host of community events supported.

While recyclables will no longer be sorted on the Rakaia site, locals can still drop off material in bins for collection by the council’s contractor, Envirowaste.

The sorting shed will continue to be a gathering place with the council offering it to the community association to use as a shed where people can pick up recycled bikes, lawnmowers, tools and barbecues. And the on-site shop will continue to ply its trade.

Foreign visitors to pay more Foreign visitors will be charged twice as much to use some of the country’s best walking tracks, the Government says.

Conservation Minister Maggie Barry said fees would be doubled on the five most popular walks – Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, Abel Tasman and Tongariro.

The fees on the other Great Walks would be increased by 50 per cent, and the additional $4 million in revenue would be used for conservation projects.

The higher costs would only apply to international visitors from October next year, and New Zealanders would still pay the same price.

“We believe it’s fair that international visitors who experience our Great Walks pay a little more to enjoy our landscape and contribute to protecting our native wildlife,” Barry said.

The Government also announced an additional $5.4 million a year for community-led conservation programmes.

Barry signalled higher fees this year after the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment warned that the Department of Conservation needed “a great deal more money”.

The Government prefers the users pays fee to a border tax, which has been pro-

posed by the Green Party and is expected to be included in Labour’s fiscal plan next week.

Barry also said a “loophole” which allowed international students to book out DoC huts without paying would be scrapped.

“Those people will now be charged the full adult rate. A lot of New Zealanders try to book these huts, and then find to their aggravation that school children from Australia or Singapore have booked out the huts for the month of January.”

The cost of staying in a hut on the Milford Track would rise to around $140 – a small price for a world-class accommodation, Barry said.

The higher costs were not expected to dent tourist numbers. It was hoped that the higher fees on the more popular tracks would encourage visitors to use some of the less-used Great Walks.

Prime Minister Bill English said the higher fees were not a step towards a tourist levy.

“We just don’t an extra levy at the border. New Zealand is having good tourism growth now but we want to be careful about piling up costs and finding later it’s too much.”

NZ wool market improves New Zealand wool prices and sale clearance rates continued to improve at the latest weekly auction, as buying interest picked up from China, the largest buyer of the fibre.

Some 91 per cent of the 7241 wool bales offered at Thursday’s North Island auction were sold, and prices lifted for most styles of wool on offer with the coarse crossbred wool indicator up 4 cents to $2.86 a kilogram, AgriHQ said.

The New Zealand wool market is showing signs of picking up this season after coarse wool prices slumped last season when China switched its preference to fine wool and away from strong wool that makes up the majority of the

country’s clip. “The wool market improved further at this week’s North Island sale – both prices and the clearance rate was up further, and it looks as though the market has stabilised,” AgriHQ analyst Sam Laurenson said.

“The lift in the current market conditions is currently being driven by increased buying from China.

There is no clear indication that the market will continue to trend upwards.”

AgriHQ’s Laurenson noted that since the last North Island sale two weeks ago prices were up for the majority of the wool types on offer.

Crossbred second-shear wool was up across a range of styles, with the long styled 37-micron crossbred wool up 10 cents to $2.65/kg and shorter styles up to 15 cents to $2.55/kg. Meanwhile, 30-micron lamb wool held steady at $3.10/kg.

Some 11,800 bales are expected to be on offer at next week’s auction.

Many prisoners have been in the news for the wrong reasons but they are now being kept in the know by a scheme to increase literacy in jail.

The Sir Peter Williams QC Penal Reform League has announced Springhill, Waikeria, and Tongariro prisons will soon be recipients of daily newspapers.

W

e’ve written and said a lot about water this week.

Some of it has been good.

Some of it has been a little negative. But it’s been a buzz word all the same.

Labour’s water tax policy could very well become a deciding factor in the election next month and you get the feeling we haven’t heard the last of the word scaremongering yet.

As well as the tax, there’s been the clean waterways conversation.

Some will have you believe our waterways are ridiculously contaminated; others will say that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The only real question is though, who do we actually believe?

Then there’s been the good water news of the week with the local farmers buying out their now former partners, EA Networks, from the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme, for a cool $25 million.

That’s massive for the community. It’s now 100 per cent controlled by the farmer and already there’s talk of new storage ponds and further development of an already thriving system that was put in place back in 2010.

Too often these days we see some of our most valuable commodities disappear into the ether and get snatched up by corporates with little, or no, involvement from locals.

When that happens a little bit of the community is taken away from us and the more it happens, the less we seem to have to do with what is actually going on at the grassroots level out there in the place we call home.

So, it’s kudos to those farmers and investors who have dug deep into their pockets and come up with a considerable amount of money.

They’re ensuring that for generations to come the water scheme will stay hyper-local.

The hard work may only just be beginning, but all of a sudden the entire scheme now seems sustainable and those who became shareholders will be rewarded with new water charges at a lower rate.

And that’s roughly the week in water. Who knows what might come through the tap next week.

YOUR VIEW Ashburton River I want to be very clear, my ‘view’ on water issues are exactly that, mine, there is no ‘preelection Forest & Bird misinformation campaign’ and to suggest so is utter nonsense.

I’m in favour of any arrangement by any political party who acknowledges the state of our lowland rivers and is serious about improving them.

The facts about the Ashburton River are: • It is fed by the Ashburton Glacier not the Cameron Glacier. The Cameron Glacier feeds the Cameron River into Lake Stream which flows into the Rakaia River.

• The mean annual low flow (MALF) has been between 2 & 3.5 cumecs for many years.

• ECan acknowledge the MALF is too low to sustain a healthy river and want to increase it to 6 cumecs by 2023. They also acknowledge the major contributor to the low flow is abstraction, the Ashburton being among the most heavily allocated rivers in New Zealand.

• There are 96 groundwater consents hydraulically connected to the river, 52 are for surface water and contain flow restrictions. Almost all of the groundwater

takes do not contain restrictions and 96 users can take water connected to the river until it is dry.

To meet the target of 6 cumecs, ECan need to review their consents and put limits on their takes which they seem reluctant to do.

The Zone Committee acknowledge abstraction is a major part of the problem and are looking at other ways to reduce the abstraction. Greenstreet Irrigation has been granted consent to swap from surface abstraction to deep groundwater however, these groundwater takes will be close to the river and will need to be very deep to avoid being hydraulically connected to the river.

Forest & Bird were concerned at the high flows during the river bird nesting season last year because they were caused by RDR releasing water to allow race maintenance. This water could have been diverted elsewhere and would have avoided the unnecessary risk of flooding the nests.

Concerning E.coli. A Guardian article on July 26 states and I quote ‘Adrian Meredith told the Zone Committee the E.coli samples had markers for ruminant, hu-

man and avian sources. The samples showed predominant ruminal (livestock) sources with evidence of bird and human sources’ end of quote. There is no mention of ‘nesting seagulls and perhaps pigeons at State Highway 1’ being the prime cause, as was referred to by Ian. It is worth noting also that ECan were having difficulty getting suitable E.coli samples this year because the summer river flows were higher than usual resulting in lower E.coli concentrations in the river.

• I have never seen the Ashburton dry in the 53 years I have lived in Ashburton.

The North branch yes, but that has only occurred regularly since the 80s because ground water abstraction was consented in addition to existing surface abstraction.

In a recent survey 80 plus per cent favoured charging a ‘royalty’ which is not a ‘tax’, for commercial use of water and that seems fair providing it is sustainable and applies to all commercial users and not just irrigators.

Those are the facts and I will leave it to your readers to decide if they think abstraction has or has not affected the state of the Ashburton River.

ell done to the recent reporting and letters about a proposed water tax for New Zealand.

There were excellent letters (and probably more to come) from people who know more than me about what impact a water tax would have in this district.

So shall I chip in, being the shy, fence-sitting, not likely to shoot off from the mouth sort of guy that I am?

Actually no. I’m not going to say a word on this one except – no one cares beyond the coalface.

Now I’m not saying no one cares, I’m saying those that impose and those that expect and collect, couldn’t give the nuts off a 1990s Rover (believe me they are highly valued) about the impact another tax will have.

Those that impose are the politicians and the ministries charged with implementing the policy that was dreamed up to appeal to a block of voters. Those that expect and collect are the ministries, IRD and even councils that raise the shield of “it’s the law” when defending their actions.

So write all the letters and articles you can, both for and against. Test all the water you want and enlighten us with facts and figures that are true and convincing – no one away from the coal face cares.

Many cases in point, but let me pick one.

Since 2000 all schools have been required to write and submit an annual charter to the Ministry of Education (MOE).

This has been in place under both left and right wing governments.

The charter must contain somewhere between three to six goals and targets that lay out your actions to improve student learning. Nothing wrong with that so far, good stuff that our Treaty writers would have been proud of.

At the end of the year, you have a quick reflection and write up how you went against your planned targets.

Let’s say you wanted to have 75 per cent of all children completing maths at the correct curriculum level for them. End of year your school achieved 68 per cent. There is a variance between what you hoped to do and what you got. You analyse that and write a story about why there is a variance. This is known as an Analysis of Variance (AoV).

Now, you submit your AoV to the MOE for every goal in your charter. There are 2500 schools in good ole NZ. If each wrote three goals, that would be 7500 AoV statements for the MOE. What happens next? Nothing. Do you get help if you didn’t meet your target? Nope. Do you get an award if you smash it out of the ball park? Nope. You do get told off if you don’t submit it though. Surely someone with more wise years than you at least calls you and goes over the result? Nope, naddah, nothing, zip, diddly squat flat out NO! No one cares.

No one cares that to achieve some of your targets took teachers hours upon hours of planning, teaching, assessing, worrying, feeding, disciplining, coaching and working with parents. Or that principals spent hours chasing pockets of money to try to help some earnest little learner who tries their best but still struggles with reading. Or that at times minimal wage support staff sat with overwhelmed, hungry and anxious children, repeating lessons day after day hoping for a small gain in their learning.

No one cares that behind each and every one of those 7500 AoV statements are stories of hard grind, humbling experiences, and real lightbulb moments when it all clicks for the child.

statements have been sent to the MOE. Where are they all? Did you know a copy goes in with your school’s annual audited accounts? And that a copy of those accounts go to your local MP? In this district that would mean at least 1008 statements have been sent to the National party MP (we haven’t had a Labour MP here since before black and white TV).

Now those statements have made no difference to education policy to the government of the day, yet those statements are rich with information about what works and what doesn’t work.

Our AoVs outline success and failure in our schools, come directly from those at the chalkface, but are ignored. NO ONE CARES! So please, write your articles and letters, on both sides of the debate.

Present your knowledge and opinions, I have learnt a lot from reading them, but until you take action that is so strong it rocks the ninth floor in Wellington, those that impose and those that expect and collect, do not care.

Harvey heads for Texas Harvey intensified into a hurricane yesterday and steered for the Texas coast with the potential for up to 90cm of rain, 200km/ph winds and 3.7 metre storm surges in what could be the fiercest hurricane to hit the United States in almost a dozen years.

Forecasters labelled Harvey a “life-threatening storm” that posed a “grave risk”. Millions of people braced for a prolonged battering that could swamp dozens of counties more than 160 kilometres inland.

Landfall was predicted for Saturday or early Sunday.

Harvey grew quickly from a tropical depression into a Category 1 hurricane. Fuelled by warm Gulf waters, it was projected to become a major Category 3 hurricane.

“We’re forecasting continuing intensification right up until landfall,” National Hurricane Centre spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

Harvey’s effect would be broad. The hurricane centre said storm surges as much as one metre could be expected as far north as Morgan City, Louisiana, some 650 kilometres away

from the anticipated landfall.

And once it comes ashore, the storm is expected to stall, dumping copious amounts of rain for days in areas like floodprone Houston, the nation’s fourth most-populous city, and San Antonio.

Harvey would be the first significant hurricane to hit Texas since Ike in September 2008 brought winds of 177km/ph to the Galveston and Houston areas and inflicted $US22 billion in damage. It would be the first big storm along the middle Texas coast since Hurricane Claudette in 2003 caused $US180 million in damage.

It’s taking aim at the same vicinity as Hurricane Carla, the largest Texas hurricane on record. The storm killed 34 people and forced about 250,000 people to evacuate.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump was “briefed and will continue to be updated as the storm progresses”.

11 minutes before lethal injection took effect

Missing boy was in care

Florida yesterday put a man to death with an anaesthetic never used before in a US lethal injection, carrying out its first execution in more than 18 months on an inmate convicted of two racially motivated murders.

Authorities said 53-year-old Mark Asay, the first white man executed in Florida for the killing of a black man, was pronounced dead at 6.22pm at the state prison in Starke. Asay received a three-drug injection that began with the anaesthetic, etomidate.

Though approved by the Florida Supreme Court, etomidate has been criticised by some as being unproven in an execution.

Etomidate replaced midazolam, which became harder to acquire

after many drug companies began refusing to provide it for executions.

Prosecutors say Asay made racist comments in the 1987 fatal shooting of a black man, Robert Lee Booker. Asay also was convicted of the 1987 murder of Robert McDowell, who was mixed race, white and Hispanic.

Asay was asked whether he wanted to make a final statement. “No sir, I do not. Thank you,” he replied.

The execution protocol began at 6.10pm.

The execution was Florida’s first since the US Supreme Court halted the practice in the state after finding its method for sentencing people to death to be unconstitutional.

NSW boy William Tyrrell, who vanished, aged three, from a home on the state’s mid north coast in 2014, was a foster child living in care.

This fact has been made public after a Sydney appeals court decided Australians had the right to know the status of the youngster.

Until now William’s status was kept quiet and has only been revealed after the Department of Family and Community Services lost a bid for a permanent injunction to stop an advocacy group from publishing the fact.

FACS had argued identifying William as a foster child would have a “stigmatising effect” on him and his family.

As the three-year anniversary of William’s disappearance draws near, a group called Walking 4 Warriors

had wanted to use the injuncted information to push for a coronial inquest into his disappearance.

It can also be revealed that earlier this year, a Supreme Court judge said “tragically” the probability was that the boy was “no longer alive”.

The Court of Appeal agreed with the decision of primary Supreme Court judge Paul Brereton on the reporting of circumstances of the boy.

Police have previously said William, who would have turned six in June, could have been the target of a paedophile ring operating in the NSW north coast region.

A year ago, a record $1 million reward was offered for information to help find the Sydney-based boy, who was last seen wearing his favourite Spiderman outfit.

Cheers actor dies Jay Thomas, a radio talk show host and actor with recurring roles on the sitcoms Murphy Brown and Cheers, has died, his publicist said. Thomas was 69. He was “one of the funniest and kindest men I have had the honour to call both client and friend for 25 years plus,” publicist Tom Estey said in a statement. He did not provide further details. Thomas was fighting cancer, the New York Daily News reported. Thomas’ best-known roles were as Eddie LeBec, the former-hockeyplayer husband of barmaid Carla on Cheers, and tabloid-talk-show host Jerry Gold on Murphy Brown, for which he won two Emmys. Diane English, creator of Murphy Brown, said in a Twitter post that she was heartbroken to hear of his death.

The Green Machine of Celtic have been the team to beat this year, and showed that in their 32-22 win over Ashburton College in the Mid Canterbury Netball Premier Final on Thursday evening.

Celtic went unbeaten in the premier round, with their smallest winning margin coming in the semifinals against Methven, where they won by nine goals.

They started the first quarter the brighter of the two sides, rarely giving up possession and comfortably building up their play to the goal.

With plenty of support for both sides from the crowd, AshColl tacked on to Celtic’s heels, and never let their lead extend out of reach.

By the end of the first whistle, Celtic led by three goals, with the scoreboard reading 10-7.

In the second quarter, AshColl

found more luck with breaking up Celtic’s play, but were unable to get a look at the lead, and were forced to watch as Celtic started to draw away mid-way through the quarter.

AshColl once again closed the gap to three at the half-way point, with Celtic leading 17-14.

With the third quarter normally being the time Celtic put the game out of reach for their opponents, they were not able to open as much of a lead as they

normally would, leading 24-19 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Celtic put the game to bed and doubled their lead, closing out the match 32-22.

In the Premier Two final, the result came down to the final shot of the game, with Ashburton College B taking the victory 38-37 over Rakaia A. With strong support from the crowd AshColl B led by four goals for most of the game until

they threw the lead away in the last quarter, and found themselves having to fight to bring the scores back level.

With the clock ticking down to zero, the final shot from AshColl B fell, giving them the victory.

In the third and fourth playoffs, Methven finished their Premier campaign on a bright note, beating Hampstead 31-28.

In the Premier Two grade, Celtic B romped to third place, downing Hampstead B 43-28.

Three teams chasing silverware

All three of Mid Canterbury’s division one Hockey sides will be gunning for silverware today.

Hampstead are set to battle it out against Timaru Girls’ High School for the women’s division one title.

“Realistically they are probably the favourites, they have only lost two or three games this year and deserve to have finished top,” Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull said.

“We will have to be smarter than them because we are not going to be able to outrun them.”

Turnbull said it was a great achievement to make the final, considering the up-and-down nature of a season where they have gone from having too many players, to scrambling to get a team on the turf each week.

The last time the two sides met, they could only be separated by a shootout, but Turnbull said if they were not able to get the job done at full time, with a bit of luck and the experience of their goalkeeper, anything could happen.

Their sister side, Hampstead/Collegians will be playing in the plate earlier in the day, and will be taking on Craighead, who they lost to via a shootout in their most recent clash.

In the men’s first division, Wakanui have booked themselves a place in the plate final off the back of an 8-1 thrashing of Tainui last week, and will face Northern Hearts in Timaru.

Right – Both Hampstead and Hampstead/Collegians will contest finals this weekend.

After weeks of preparation, the Mid Canterbury Hammers will open their Heartland Championship campaign against Poverty Bay today.

Coaches James Jowsey and Craig Dunlea were able to call on a number of players who were unavailable in last weekend’s hit-out against the West Coast.

First-five Jason Kjestrup returns from concussion issues, while the electric Maleli Sau makes his first start in the green and gold this season on the right wing.

“He (Kjestrup) controls things nicely in there. He is a very good

player and has been outstanding in training,” Dunlea said.

One player who caught the eye in the West Coast was midfielder Tom Hanham-Carter, who will start at centre.

“We have got to reward someone who plays a game like that and that is what we have done,” he said.

“Now we just have to make sure that he just doesn’t get overawed. He is an intelligent player and has a good future ahead of him.”When it comes to the opposition, Dunlea said he expects a quick starting, physical game from the Gisborne based side.

“They have had a pretty good

season and put some points on Wairarapa Bush and the East Coast so that is something,” he said.

“We expect them to come out of the blocks and that they will be very physical for the first 15 minutes. “It will just be a case of us getting in to our patterns and shapes.”

Going in to the West Coast match off the back of a two-hour training session in the morning, a sluggish start would have been expected, but Dunlea will be hoping that any starting issues will have been put to bed.

“We have addressed it and changed how we do a few things

in the warm-up so hopefully we will have that edge coming in to the start,” he said.

Young Ashburton indoor bowler, Taylor Mackenzie will try her luck against some of the best rising talents this weekend in Wellington at the New Zealand Junior Singles.

The Willowby Club member will line up in a field of 24 players from all around the country.

Playing in four matches, Mackenzie will need to win three games to qualify for post-section play.

With a new crop of juniors competing this year for the first time it will be interesting to see who rises to the challenge and if they can cause any upsets along the way.

A plate event will be held for the non-qualifiers in the main championship and the winner receives the Morrison Plate.

To qualify for the championships players must be under the age of 18 years of age on March 1, 2017 and have won their district junior singles competition.

Twenty-four of the 35 districts have entered.

At the conclusion of the singles tournament the Northern and Southern Zone junior teams will be named.

They will compete in the Northern versus Southern Zone competition for the McLachlan Junior Challenge Trophy which was won by the Northern Zone last year.

This year the Southern Zone includes the greater Wellington districts, Manawatu and Horowhenua so that there are 12 districts in each zone.

Each zone is represented by nine players selected as one pair, a triple and a fours team.

Mackenzie will be back in action on Sunday when she competes in the 10th New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Singles – a separate event to the New Zealand Indoor Bowls championship on the Saturday.

Omission costs Neesham $US100,000 Jimmy Neesham’s chances of playing in next month’s Twenty20 cricket series between the World XI and Pakistan have been thwarted.

He was set to earn $US100,000 to stay for less than a week in Lahore on a tour comprising three matches which had been granted international status.

Neesham was understood to be in the original touring side, but received a phone call from World XI management on Thursday confirming his omission due to an administrative hold up.

Grant Elliott will be New Zealand’s sole representative in a 14-man squad featuring cricketers from seven test-playing countries.

His decision to play is expected to come with a disclaimer that the International Cricket Council will shoulder no liability for his travel, such as the cost of insurance.

Neesham (a New Zealand Cricket contracted player) and Elliott (a non-contracted player) required “no objection certificates” to be released by NZC for the ICC-sanctioned event.

The World XI will be captained by Faf du Plessis and coached by Andy Flower.

Flower, who toured Pakistan in 1993, 1996 and 1998 with Zimbabwe, explained his stance to the Herald.

“I’ve been in contact with a number of players and boards around the world to find out whether they [the players] were going to be released.

“New Zealand Cricket’s initial stance was

that contracted players were not going to be released.”

Flower said he would not discuss his private dealings on the World XI’s selection. The Herald asked him whether Neesham had been in contention.

“We were looking at a number of top players. Jimmy was one of them but, at the time of us making our final selections, as a contracted player he wasn’t available so we couldn’t select him.”

Sources told the Herald that Neesham’s application for a NOC had been with NZC for three weeks.

Players can be denied a NOC on the basis of player welfare, as happened when Ross Taylor wanted to play for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League on New Year’s Day too soon after his last game for Central Districts.

Alternatively, an NOC can be withheld if there are injury concerns, or if national duty intervenes.

Neesham is not believed to have contravened any of those conditions.

NZC chief executive David White said permission for any player to attend the series was approved at yesterday’s board meeting.

“The board agreed to release both contracted and non-contracted players for that Pakistan series because there’s no clash with New Zealand cricket commitments.”

Neesham and his management were not available for comment.

All Blacks to make special tribute to Sir Colin Meads The All Blacks will wear a special tribute to the late Sir Colin Meads on their jerseys tonight – an extra emotional touchstone which increases the significance of the test against the Wallabies.

The tribute will be in the form of an embroidered number – it is understood it will be Meads’ All Black number 583 – following the death of the former great in Te Kuiti last Sunday, a day after the All Blacks thrashed the Wallabies in Sydney.

Meads has always been a big part of the All Black legacy and the former lock’s passing has been

spoken about by the team during the week. Lock Sam Whitelock will formally present his No.5 jersey to the Meads family after the match at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Steve Hansen’s men will want to honour Meads’ memory with a ruthless and accurate performance against the Wallabies. A victory will see them claim the Bledisloe Cup for another year – Australia last held it in 2003 – but the home side want a little more than that.

In Dane Coles’ first test back following his concussion and in Ben Smith’s final test before his

sabbatical, the All Blacks want a complete 80-minute performance.

“He’s been there – we’ve certainly touched on him throughout the week,” skipper Kieran Read said of Meads’ memory.

“We’re paying a great tribute to him on our jersey tomorrow night so the guys will certainly treasure that. It won’t necessarily win us the test match – we have to do that ourselves.”

They key for Hansen’s men is to be direct and ruthless when they have the ball – a bit like Meads in his pomp – in order to recycle

possession and give their strike weapons out wide a chance to run into space.

“The key from our point of view is to start again, to make sure we earn the right to do those little things that came off in weekend,” Read said. “It’s really simple stuff from our point of view – it’s looking after the breakdown, making sure our ball carries are really strong. That allows us to get quick ball. It’s the same for us every week but especially this week.

“We weren’t happy with the last 30 minutes of last week. That was probably a great kick in the guts

for us. We need to start this week on the right note. A big thing this week that we’re playing for as well ... with Colin and obviously the Bledisloe Cup is treasured from our point of view.

Asked what made him think the Australians could provide a challenge when they were woeful defensively in the first half last weekend, Read replied: “You just have to look at the footage of the last 20 minutes of the game last week. We know how dangerous they can be. They’re dangerous, they’re hungry, they’ve certainly got a point to prove.”

Wallaby backlash coming

By GreGor Paul The Wallaby backlash is going to come. They can’t possibly be as passive in Dunedin as they were in Sydney.

The unknown is the likely format their physicality will take.

Presumably they will focus on tackling harder, putting men down in dominant impacts.

Presumably they will be more intent and urgent at the breakdown, compete harder to slow things down and presumably in the general business of collision work, they will be more accurate and confronting.

That much the All Blacks are assuming. What they are also aware of is that the Wallabies may sprinkle their more aggressive stance with a liberal dose of niggle.

That has been their go-to in the past, most memorably in the equivalent game last year which they came into, just as they are this time, on the back of a hiding in Sydney.

Last year in the opening Bledisloe Cup test the Wallabies rolled over and didn’t compete physically. They came to New Zealand a week later with a clearly pre-determined plan to unsettle the All Blacks by playing hard off the ball.

It was a test marred by endless jersey pulling, line blocking, verbal spraying and general pettiness. It was a low point in Bledisloe Cup history as while the Wallabies may have been the instigators, the All Blacks got caught up in it all and gave as much as they received.

The All Blacks won, but they weren’t happy with the way they were drawn into the Wallabies’ agenda: all the mucking around as if they were in the school yard got in the way of either team playing rugby.

If it happened again, the All Blacks vowed to rise above it, deal with it more effectively.

Impressive haka When you think England rugby and the haka you picture 15 men in white jerseys attempting to stare down the All Blacks. However members of the Bristol rugby team have proven, given the chance, Englishmen can actually pull off the traditional All Blacks challenge Ka Mate. World rugby posted a video on Instagram of former All Black and New Zealand Maori representative Bruce Reihana leading a haka with the Bristol side. Reihana is the skills coach at Bristol, with the RFU Championship club coached by former Blues boss Pat Lam. - NZME

What have these two got cooked up for the All Blacks tonight?

Their conviction on that front may well be tested at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

There has been a definite edge about the Wallabies since coach Michael Cheika took over in late 2014. It has become part of their game to linger after contact and look for a bit of push and shove and they up the ante on that when they are under pressure.

The pattern has been that the more the Wallabies feel they need a result, the more likely they are to indulge in a bit of nonsense. And the pressure they are currently under could hardly be greater.

No one in Australia appears to be buying into the final scoreline from last week. The fact the Wallabies salvaged some respectability doesn’t change the fact that after 50 minutes, they were 54-6 down.

There is the whole backdrop with the Western Force, the chaos within the Australian Rugby Union, the 26 Super Rugby defeats to New Zealand teams and a general sense of the game being in danger of imploding to

heighten the belief that this week could be one that, in time, history marks as the point of no return or the test where the Wallabies saved the sport in Australia.

With that in mind, the All Blacks know what might be coming and they know they have to deal with it better if it does.

“I think first of all it is recognising that is what the opposition or an individual might be trying to do,” says Sam Cane. “I think the best way of looking at it is to say that if they are running around trying to do those sorts of things it means they are off task in the things they should be focusing on in terms of playing rugby and their roles there.

“As long as you don’t let it distract you from doing your role but at the same time, you don’t want to put up with any stuff that you shouldn’t have to. As long as you can deal with it and it doesn’t detract from you doing your job I think you let them know how you feel about that rubbish.”

The importance of the All Blacks being able to handle any cheap work by the Wallabies ex-

tends beyond the context of the Dunedin test.

If there is an increasing area of concern for the All Blacks it is in the way they are not always dealing with problems in real time. .

It was the same last week in Sydney. They switched off in that final half hour – seduced by the scoreboard was coach Steve Hansen’s term - and became selfdestructively loose.

That in itself was a worry but the bigger concern is that such a state of affairs lasted for 30 minutes without the leadership group able to regather the troops and reignite the same attacking cohesion that allowed them to be so devastating in the first 50 minutes.

Being able to recognise issues on the field and implement effective action plans became the hallmark of former skipper Richie McCaw’s captaincy.

It’s not an easy art to develop but it is one the current side need to get better at and they face, perhaps, and the test in Dunedin is the perferct opportunity to make big strides on that front. - NZME

Paramatta Eels score fastest ever NRL try It was a hard act to follow.

But four try hero Semi Radradra upstaged record breaking winger Kirisome Auva’a to spark Parramatta’s 52-34 NRL rout of second placed Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.

The Broncos were left shellshocked when Auva’a notched the fastest try in NRL history, taking just 12 seconds to score after an Adam Blair turnover.

Yet Radradra ensured he would dominate the highlights reel with his second four-try effort of the season following his round two bag against St George Illawarra.

Dalton tossed off bike Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton has walked away from a high-speed motorcycle crash at the famed Isle of Man circuit, according to reports. The Isle of Man website is reporting that Dalton came off during a Superbike session but was unhurt.

According to Fairfax, the 60-yearold was travelling at 160-177km/h at the time of the crash. “I’d just cranked into a corner up at a place called The Verandah and the bike seized and just fired me off the road,” Dalton said.

Guptill returns home Martin Guptill has cut his Caribbean Premier League stint short to deal with a family health matter at home. The circumstances are not believed to involve Guptill’s wife Laura and her pregnancy. The couple are expecting their first child next month. Big test for Hello M’Lady Group-placed mare Hello M’Lady will be tested today when she steps up in grade against some smart horses in the ITM PSP Open Sprint at New Plymouth over 1300m.

The four-year-old Shocking mare is unbeaten in her current campaign, winning both of her races with ease at Rotorua. While she was impressive in those races, trainer and part-owner Vicki Prendergast is wary of the step up in class.

“They have been pretty soft fields, so they don’t tell you a whole lot,” she said.

“We always knew she was pretty smart, she showed that last season when she placed in the stakes races (Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes and Listed Wanganui Guineas).

“She just needed to get some confidence and we needed to get her out of maiden grade, so we started her in a couple of soft fields and it paid off.”

In her two wins, Hello M’Lady has drawn wide, dropped back early before improving from the 600m mark and ran away from her opposition. She has once again drawn a wide barrier and similar tactics are likely to be adopted.

Prendergast is happy with the way her stable star has been working since her last start, but said Saturday’s race will answer a lot of questions.

“She was given to us and we tried to give her away, but no one wanted her so we pottered along with her,” she said.

“She is just really nice to have around, she’s a great little horse and is always ready to give you a cuddle. We quite like having her around otherwise we would have

sold her by now, we’ve had plenty of offers.” Already Group-placed, she could add to that tally next month with a likely run in the Gr.3 Spring Sprint on the last day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival.

“There are not many other races for her because she doesn’t have enough points for any of the earlier races,” Prendergast said.

“We’ll then look at giving her a spell after that.”

Court says his son Paul has a very exciting son of Stunin Cullen in training called Ready To Rumble.

He qualified as a juvenile back in April and was subsequently put aside, but resumed at the Rangiora workouts on Wednesday with a win.

“He’s a very nice animal and there is also a half-brother to Terror To Love there too (Stunin Love) that we think a bit of.”

Court says the harsh reality of the commercial stallion game is that sires can be made or broken by their first crop.

“It’s a tough old game, the stud business. We’re more than happy with what we’ve got but we had to be realistic about the support he might get here this spring.”

To date, Stunin Cullen has had six qualifiers from his first crop of 54 live foals Subsequently, he had crops of 24 and 12 hit the ground while he served 23 mares last season.
