The identification of a new nitrate hotspot in Mid Canterbury has prompted a renewed request for rural families to test drinking water from private wells in the interests of infant health. Community & Public Health, a division of the Canterbury District Health Board, has been working with Environment Canterbury (ECan) to review its risk maps of nitrate in groundwater report and update a series of maps
showing nitrate contamination in shallow groundwater. The report, compiled in June 2013 and updated in June this year, has disclosed two new hotspots in Canterbury – one in the upper Hinds River catchment and another in Selwyn’s Greendale district. Community & Public Health drinking water assessor Denise Tully said high nitrate levels can cause methemoglobinemia – commonly known as blue baby syndrome.
Babies in-utero and bottle-fed infants up to six months old are deemed to be most at risk of developing the syndrome. While there have been no confirmed cases of blue baby syndrome in Mid Canterbury, Ms Tully told the Ashburton Water Management Zone Committee it was important to keep the message about water testing live.
