Manilow’s duets from beyond grave Barry Manilow has recorded an entire album of duets with superstars – all of whom are dead. The US entertainer has chosen to perform alongside Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong and Whitney Houston using studio wizardry for his My Dream Duets collection. “The album is a miracle. It’s been a huge undertaking, musically and technically,” Manilow, 70, said.

The vocal tracks for each of the guest artists were taken from original and then the music was re-orchestrated and Manilow’s accompaniment was added. “The songs have all new arrangements and sound as if they were recorded yesterday.”

Watson ‘threatened’ Internet trolls on the site which hosted naked celebrity photos have made what appears to be a threat to film star Emma Watson just hours after she addressed the United Nations on gender equality. A web page entitled Emma You Are Next, featuring an image of the Harry Potter star next to a countdown, appeared to have been created by a user of image-sharing website 4chan, on which lewd photos of celebrities including actress Jennifer Lawrence and model Kate Upton were posted last month.

Economy takes a $361m hit

Mid Canterbury’s economy will be down by more than $361 million on last year’s dairy earn, if other milk companies follow Fonterra’s lead in slashing forecast milk prices.

Yesterday the dairy giant announced a big dip in profit, and slashed its farm gate milk price for the current season, from $6 projected about a month ago, to $5.30 per kilogram of milksolids (kg/MS). With an estimated dividend of 25-35 cents per share, the forecast for fully cashed up shareholders would average out at $5.60.

Mid Canterbury’s 311,600odd cows produce on average 400kg/MS per year, contributing more than $1.5 billion to the economy in the 2013-14 year, based on the co-operative’s biggest ever payout of $8.50kg/ MS. This year’s dairy earn is set to drop by $361,456,000 in Mid Canterbury alone; nationwide that figure leaps to $5b.

Despite this Grow Mid Canterbury CEO Rob Brawley said the local economy was in good shape.

“GDP has expanded at an average of 4 per cent for the past 10 years, and employment and productivity grew at almost twice the national rate of the same period,” he said.

“The 2014 season saw the highest dairy payout to date but not all of the extra money made

was or will be spent in the local economy.

“As a result the financial position of most Mid Canterbury dairy farmers should be sound.

“Our economy will face several challenges over the coming year. There will be a reduction in spending because there will be less money available to dairy farmers.”

News of a 70c drop on last month’s forecast was not good but neither was it surpising, Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy spokeswoman Jess Chan-Dorman said.

“At $5.30 per kilogram of milksolids (kg/MS) it’s about what a lot of the commentators had said, and in the vicinity that we thought it might be,” she said.

Facing the lowest payout in five years, farmers will be watching farm input costs closely this season.

“With the $8.40kg/MS remaining for last season, we’ve got to make the best of that payout to weather this year,” she said.

“We farm for the long term outlook; hopefully we’ve all made good use of the payouts for the past five years.

“It’s when you get several low payout years in a row that you start having problems – because you can’t hold off forever, because things start to run-down.”

Ms Chan-Dorman was still confident in the long-term outlook for the industry.

Farmers get on with the job

By ANdrew KiNg While Fonterra has dropped its forecast dairy payout, long-time Winchmore farmer Peter Gilbert is more concerned about getting on with the job.

Peter and his sons are into their fifth generation of farming, and between them they have seen the highs and the lows farming has to offer.

Peter was born and bred in Springston on a farm where his grandfather started milking jersey cows in the early 1900s, before moving to Winchmore.

The 186ha Winchmore property milks 700 cows through a 40-bale rotary shed, making milking slightly longer than they would like. However, it gets the job done, an attitude that seems to have been passed down

from generation to generation.

Peter’s son’s Nick and Michael work on the properties.

Michael looks after the run-off where they winter their animals while Nick has been keeping the main dairy operation running smoothly since 2008.

He is not overly concerned about Fonterra dropping its forecast payout from $6 to $5.30, saying they will just have to tighten their belts a bit.

“We just have to cut our costs where we can and watch our spending, but it will be all right.

“We are having a good start to our season, the weather has been good with little snow, not really worthy of a mention.”

All three are qualified as technicians and do all their own artificial insemination, with the family breeding jersey pedigrees since the early 1900s.

“Our great-grandfather had them so we have just continued that,” Nick said.

“It’s really a personal choice (jerseys) they eat less but still produce good solids which is important because that’s what Fonterra pays for.”

Peter has the same attitude as his son when it comes to the payout.

“Not a lot we can do about it, we just have to work with what we get.”

Nick is also looking to the future and has plans to get a new shed up and running in the next three to four years to ease milking time and possibly increase the herd.

They also want to convert to dairy and milk on both properties.

“I’d like to work the run-off once converted,” Nick said.

Family health centre moves to new site

The Canterbury District Health Board has lost a key player in its bid to build an integrated family health centre in the grounds of Ashburton Hospital.

Earlier this month South Link Health Services revealed its plans to build a new health centre in Ashburton, in partnership with two GPs, but that centre will now be built on privately owned land.

It has applied for a resource consent to build the centre on two sections off Allens Road, owned by Medifab with the other previously the base for Grieve Transport.

The decision was made to move ahead with health centre plans on a new site, because South Link Health services could not reach agreement with the CDHB on some commercial aspects of the project, general manager Matt Gilchrist said.

The partnership already owns the Allenton Medical Centre.

It was too early to go into detail about the proposal, but it would effectively see the current medical centre developed into the new family centre in combination with other allied health providers and possibly another sole general practice, Mr Gilchrist said.

“Regardless of the final site, our intentions are to continue to work closely with Canterbury DHB and Rural Canterbury PHO to make sure the new facility helps provide a sustainable general practice solution for the Ashburton District.

Hopefully this will include working in conjunction with some ex-

isting hospital services.”

The CDHB unveiled its plans in July last year to build an integrated family health care centre in the hospital’s grounds. It planned to lease the site to a private developer to build and then operate the complex.

That plan effectively stymied a plan launched early last year for a similar centre to be run by Better Health on a West Street site.

The South Link Health plan will now force the CDHB to rethink its own plans.

The Ashburton Hospital proposal was seen by the CDHB as a way to attract new general practitioners to the district and improve and support after-hours care.

South Link Health Services purchased a share of the Allenton Medical Centre last year when one of the GP owners, Ross Warring, indicated he would be shifting out of Ashburton.

It entered into a new, limited partnership with the two other GP owners, Malcolm Wootton and John Guthrie.

Carolyn Gullery, general manager planning and funding, said the CDHB was supportive of the ongoing development of primary care in the Ashburton area and remained interested in the opportunities that co-location would provide.

“Our integrated Canterbury Health System works with all service providers to ensure services are clinically and financially sustainable and that will still be the case, wherever an IFHC might be located,” she said.

School looks to the future

Ashburton College is embracing the world of technology by encouraging students to bring their electronic devices to school.

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) system had been running for most of 2014, and aimed to have every student bringing a device such as a tablet or laptop to school.

The school was aiming to make the system compulsory by 2016.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said many students were already bringing their devices to school, where they could ac-

cess the school’s wireless internet.

Mr McMillan said the school would provide devices for those students who were unable to supply their own, and he would be discussing options with local retailers.

“The digital revolution, if you like, is probably the first big revolution to hit education and teaching and learning since mass publication and the printing press,” he said. He believed increased use of technology in the classroom would change the way students learned and connected with others.

“It’s going to tip everything on its head,” he said.

“fantastic” feedback from teachers and students about the system.

Year 13 student Tristan Garza said using devices such as laptops and tablets made taking notes in his “English rich” subjects easier.

“It’s a lot faster than writing everything,” he said.

Ashburton College elearning chairperson Anne Williams believed using the technology was the way of the future and would allow for “24/7 learning”.

Mr McMillan said the school was also looking at other technological changes, including using a web app to allow students to print wirelessly from their devices.

Two grieving Mid Canterbury families have been left devastated by the selfish actions of graveside thieves.

Three coloured glass lanterns have gone missing from a grave at the Ashburton cemetery, while a memorial rhododendron bush has been dug up from the Waterton cemetery.

Maurice and Marion Ward of Fairton have been visiting the Ashburton grave of their son Zane ever since he died suddenly at the age of 47 three years ago.

They never miss a weekend and will often clean the headstone and add extra trinkets representing the things Zane loved throughout his life. He was a keen musician and a spiritual person, and a picture of a keyboard on his headstone and bird and angel statues adorn the area. Zane was a muchloved father of four, a brother and son.

For his birthday in July the Wards brought three coloured glass lanterns, one yellow, one red and one blue. Mr Ward said he was “devastated” when he and Mrs Ward visited at the weekend to find the lanterns gone.

“It almost seemed personal, that’s the way we felt,” Mrs Ward said.

Her son and Mrs Wells’ husband, Philip from Christchurch, had visited the grave at the weekend to mark their wedding

anniversary, and found two red flowers on the ground were all that remained of the bush.

The family planted it after Mrs Wells was buried there two years ago.

The mum-of-three passed away in her early 50s after an illness.

Even though she had lived in Christchurch she had been

from Southland originally and never considered herself a city girl. She had chosen the peaceful seaside location as her final resting place after visiting it some years ago.

“They have hurt some people very much who are still coming to grips with losing a mum and a wife,” Ms Patterson said of the thief.

Teenager arrested over Auckland attack

A teenager who allegedly attacked a good Samaritan outside an Auckland supermarket has been arrested and charged.

Mother of six Lucy Knight was hit on the back of the head when she intervened in a bag snatch attempt at the Northcote Countdown supermarket on Tuesday.

She fell and hit her head, fracturing her skull and suffering a brain bleed. She underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday night.

Police arrested a 17-year-old from Manurewa yesterday.

He has been charged with aggravated wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to rob.

The teenager was to remain in police custody overnight and appear in the North Shore District Court this morning.

A man was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition after an irrigation pipe fell from a truck and landed on him yesterday morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident, on a Urral Road property, by one of the man’s co-workers shortly after 7am and found the man aged in his 40s had suffered serious leg injuries.

Methven police senior constable Aaron Tapp said the pipes were being unloaded from the truck when the accident occurred.

It was estimated the large black pipes weighed in excess of a tonne each.

Two ambulances and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter from Christchurch, with two St John paramedics on board, raced to the scene.

Police were also called the scene but given it was a workplace related injury, WorkSafe NZ had been notified and it was now a matter for them to investigate.

A spokesperson for WorkSafe NZ said they had been made aware of the incident and were at the stage of making initial inquiries.

A new project was approved under the Immediate Steps programme at yesterday’s meeting of the Ashburton Water Management Zone committee. The $8293 contribution to the Darra Downs project will help with fencing, planting and maintaining multiple spring-fed streams, which are tributaries of Dry Creek, on the foothills property. Environment Canterbury biodiversity officer Jesse Hill said to date 22 projects aimed at improving water quality and biodiversity had been approved with in the zone, with $29,7075 earmarked for their completion. Eight have already been completed, and $20,2922 remained in the Immediate Steps bucket for future projects.

Labour leadership David Parker has ruled himself out of any contest for the Labour leadership, saying he told Labour leader David Cunliffe and his caucus colleagues of that decision on Tuesday. Dog dragged A horrified caller contacted police after seeing a dog being dragged by a ute around a Dunedin suburb yesterday. “It was first reported the person was taking it for a drive at 40km/h and the dog wasn’t keeping up,” Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said of the Pine Hill incident. “But that wasn’t the case. It was more the dog had fallen off and the owner wasn’t aware of it ... as soon as he came aware he stopped and sorted it out.”

Body found Police have located the body of a man where the Puriri Stream meets the Waihou River in the Waikato region. The body has not yet been formally identified, police said. Police said they want to hear from anybody who may have information about the movements of 18-year-old John Balchin who went missing in the Puriri area on Tuesday. Mr Balchin was last seen running across farmland near Puriri at about 2pm on Tuesday.

Police said they had considerable concerns for Mr Balchin’s safety.

Group asked to justify funding

This year more than $600,000 of ratepayer money will be spent funding two community organisations and the Ashburton District Council wants to know that it’s getting value for money.

It has asked both Grow Mid Canterbury and Experience Mid Canterbury to spell out how that money will be spent by preparing a business case to justify continued funding.

To keep close tabs on the operation of both organisations,

the council established liaison committees. Neil Brown chairs the Grow Mid Canterbury committee and said he believes having a business case prepared would help both the council and the community understand the work the organisation did.

“This will help them secure funding for the next 10 years because some councillors have been concerned that we’re not getting value for money,” Mr Brown said.

The business case and the establishment of the liaison committee were about raising the

level of accountability, he said.

“If councillors can’t understand what they’re doing then the public can’t either. They need to tell people what it is they’re achieving.”

The value of both organisations had also been questioned, but in terms of Grow Mid Canterbury, Mr Brown said the council needed to have its own economic development agency or it would need to contract this work to another economic agency.

He believes there had been a lack of clear communication and

openness between the organisation and the council in the past.

“What we have to do is to tell them what we need them to do for us and that’s been lacking in the past. This is about getting more transparency and accountability around what they do.”

Grow Mid Canterbury this week released an economic strategy that spells out its vision for the district over the next 20 years. That document was separate to the requested business plan and was something the council had been asking for, for four years, Mr Brown said.

Senior pupils show their artistic flair

Tinwald School senior pupils get their chance to shine today in Pacific Fusion, an Arrowsmith Syndicate performance.

It is a variety show to celebrate New Zealand’s place in the world.

Around 76 children, aged nine and 10 years, will take part with poi dancing, haka, singing, dancing, humorous skits and jokes.

Popular music will also feature with Poi E, How Bizarre and Stan Walker’s Take It Easy

roping in principal Peter Livingstone to accompany on guitar.

There will be two shows today – one at 11am, the other at 7pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Mr Livingstone said it was the third and final performance for the school pupils with their focus on the arts; first was the junior Hutt Syndicate with Where’s My Daddy, then Taylor Syndicate did Little Red Rocking Hood.

He said it was positive for all children to participate, perform

or contribute whether they were behind the scenes or in front and the performance season had seen the children do some intense learning.

Mr Livingstone estimated pupils had put in around 40 hours of practice for the show over the term.

Not only were pupils centre stage, but they were also behind the scenes with sound and lighting crews made up of senior pupils. These crews were involved in all three school syndicates’ performances in the past few weeks.

At the Pacific Fusion dress rehearsal yesterday were visitors from Park Street Day Care who got a first-hand glimpse of the school’s senior talent.

The school planned a performance season every two years to give the children opportunities to take part in something they might never have the opportunity to do, Mr Livingstone said.

He said there were opportunities for children who excelled at sport or in academia, and the performance season gave mind to those with talent in the arts.

The Hinds hall committee will pay several thousand dollars more than expected to repair the damage apparently caused during a party.

This week, the Guardian was told the mess left after a recent birthday bash could cost up to $3000. Yesterday, that figure was revised to $7000.

Committee president John Millward said the damage included “a broken window, door, six tables that cannot be replaced and a floor that was awash of booze”.

Party-goers appeared to have used the tables as makeshift toboggans, pushing their mates across the booze on the floor.

There was significant damage to the varnished floors.

“We had to clean the place three times to remove the smell for the next group to use the facilities.”

The clean-up would cost “a bit more than $7000” – a huge sum for a local amenity to find.

Mr Millward would not rule out civil court action to recover the monies.

Bosses take the plunge

“It was absolutely amazing.

Apart from having children, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

Jeremy Samuels had just jumped from a plane and plummeted 12,000 feet, and it was clear from his smile that he was still buzzing.

The Countdown store manager won the Ashburton Guardian-supported Toss Your Boss competition.

Yesterday, he and his 2IC Teresa Hamill took their free skydive courtesy of Skydiving Kiwis.

The pair won the competition after being nominated by Countdown service and administration manager Janine McLean.

“Jeremy annoyed me that day at work,” Janine said.

She added she subsequently threw Teresa “under the bus” after she realised another employee would have to take the leap with him.

“They’ll enjoy it, either that or I’ll be dead tomorrow,” she said before the jump.

The barbecue at the Skydiving Kiwis’ base at Ashburton Airport was cranking and nervesinduced jokes were coming thick and fast as the pair were strapped into their safety harnesses.

Teresa considered the benefits of a Superman pose when she jumped.

The pair were in contrasting spirits before the big event.

Teresa’s expression betrayed how nervous she was while her

boss said he was over the nerves and was looking forward to taking the plunge.

The brown paper sick bag he was carrying told a different story.

There was time for a few last good luck hugs before the pair were whisked away into the plane that would carry them 12,000 feet into the air.

Nominator Janine appeared to be having second thoughts as she watched the plane carry her bosses into the sky.

“I just want Teresa back in one piece,” she said.

After about 10 minutes of anxious waiting, the plane came into view as it flew at 6000 feet for Teresa’s jump. A huge cheer went up as a small speck in the sky erupted into a bright pink parachute.

Just a few minutes later a slightly breathless Teresa arrived back on the ground, pausing to take a selfie with her instructor before rejoining the crowd to wait for Jeremy’s turn.

‘No’ was her short answer when asked if she would attempt another skydive, much to the crowd’s amusement.

Moments later another cheer went up as Jeremy leapt from 12,000 feet, with his instructor getting creative and performing some mid-air aerobics before landing.

The two bosses exchanged a hug and rejoined the crowd, and at the after function at Braided Rivers where they and their friends watched the video of the jumps, they were obviously pleased to have both feet on the ground.

He said this was done through a capitation system with the doctor or medical system paid a sum per patient registered under their care.

It covered full fees for those under six years old, but for other patients it was only part fee.

“This system particularly affects those who are not local registered patients, people from out of town and non-New Zealand residents who will need to pay the full fee,” he said.

Dr Guthrie said there was also a change in the medical workforce with more part-timers less willing, or able to take on afterhours work.

Solid Energy says it is still evaluating the “potentially fatal risks” of re-entering the Pike River mine, but it is aiming to release a final decision by the end of next month.

Chief executive Dan Clifford fronted media in Christchurch yesterday after a new documents showed WorkSafe New Zealand and Mine Rescue’s advice to Solid Energy was that it has been technically feasible to re-enter the mine since October last year.

Mr Clifford said it was the energy company’s decision to make “and no one else’s”. “[WorkSafe] are not legally responsible for what happens in that drift – we are,” he said.

“We will not put further people at risk.”

Solid Energy is still going through its own process of risk evaluation, which amounts to a “step by step assessment”

into the risks of going back into the mine’s drift, he said.

“We won’t make a decision until that process is completed,” Mr Clifford said yesterday.

It is nearly four years since 29 men died in explosions in the mine on the West Coast.

A staged plan to re-enter the mine and explore the tunnel up to a rock fall about 2.3km in from the mine portal had been approved and the Government had committed $7.2 million to the effort.

Moving into the tunnel or drift was seen as the first step to recovering the remains of the miners.

Bernie Monk, a spokesman for some of the families killed in the explosion, has expressed dismay over the revelations.

A lawyer representing the families had been asked to find out what was holding up the mine re-entry.

Mid Canterbury bird watchers are keeping their eyes peeled for wood pigeons during a nationwide survey of the species.

For the third year in a row, Forest and Bird and associated groups are holding the Great Kereru Count.

The New Zealand native pigeons play a crucial role in spreading the seeds of plants and are the only birds that can swallow large berries from some trees, so play a key role in regenerating the country’s broadleaf forests.

Spokesperson Tiff Stewart, of Forest and Bird’s Kiwi Conservation Club, said she was hoping thousands of New Zealanders would get involved to help build a detailed picture of the bird’s distribution across the country. Anyone spotting the large white, green, grey and irides-

cent purple birds by October 5 is asked to record their observation at kererucount. org.nz Staveley ecotourism operator Warren Jowett said wood pigeons visited gardens in the foothills area, most residents spying them once or twice per year. He usually saw them each spring, as they were attracted by food sources on trees at that time.

“They are around in the foothills, but they are not common,” Mr Jowett said.

“I will be looking out for them in the survey but I will be surprised if I see one because it’s a bit early.”

However, Methven resident Sal Kircher spotted one of the birds right near the Staveley Hall two weeks ago, feeding in a tree.

“It was pretty neat to see it that close, and he didn’t seem that bothered by me,” she said.

Collective pain in falling prices Sue Newman

he difference between a good year and a bad year in the dairy industry is more than just a few cows or a few litres of milk; it can be counted in mind-boggling amounts of money.

Dairy farming is a volatile business, relying on the international marketplace to set prices.

If demand is high and global supply is short then prices rise; if it’s the opposite, then prices tumble.

This week the harsh reality of a bad year was hammered home to Ashburton’s dairy farmers as they watched payout forecasts drop yet again, this time to a modern-day low of $5.50 per kg of milk solids.

That will effectively carve more than $350 million off their collective incomes, after last year’s all-time high of $8.50.

For an urban worker that’s far worse than watching your employer carve $3 an hour off your pay rate.

Unlike farming of the past where lifestyle and business met and melded, dairy farming is strictly business. They’re professionals running multi-million dollar businesses and, like all businesses, if they thrive then the community around them thrives too.

With fortunes falling in the dairy sector, that means some chilly winds could be nipping the heels of the Ashburton District’s economy over the coming months and into next year.

If our high earning dairy farmers aren’t earning, then they won’t be spending either.

And that could weaken our reputation as New Zealand’s strongest rural economy.

Dairying doesn’t stand alone; if farmers stop spending then every other business in the district will feel the pinch too.

It’s too easy to sit back in an urban armchair with the attitude that dairying’s had it too good for too long.

If they’ve had it good, so has the rest of the district. Their fortunes are ours; we rise and fall together.

The show was absolutely amazing. Every actor performing developed their character very well.

My girls and I have spent the last few days giggling about different characters in the show and the way they brought their character to life.

I really believe the young actors need to stand up very proud of how well they acted as some of the roles would have been tricky to develop and perform so successfully.

As a family we have supported most of the BLTC shows, however, we think this one was the best yet.

Every actor was amazing to watch.

My girls nearly split in two laughing at some of the characters.

At times we didn’t know where to look on the stage because the actors were all so busy acting and with so much to see.

The story had something of everything – emotion, sensitivity, humour, engagement, seriousness and side-splitting laughter.

Congratulations for involving so many people in the show – young and old – and providing such a wonderful evening of entertainment.

Well done to the Big Little Theatre Company actors and support team!

Take action against dangerous driving

T

he very essence of being a human is feeling and having empathy and compassion for others.

Recent events within our community have brought many of us together, but, I have to ask, what if we all acted a little more proactively in other facets of our lives, what if we all worked to support and ensure we provide and model a safe and caring environment for every person in our community?

Stopping dangerous driving is one way we can support one another and make sure our friends, sisters, sons and brothers come home safely.

This is something I have always felt passionate about and with such a high fatality rate in Mid Canterbury I can’t help

day and all of SADD week, but this still does not feel like enough.

We are all saying, “don’t drink drive, don’t text and drive and don’t speed” but we aren’t backing these up with actual actions.

As a community we need to realise that it is all about decision-making, and with statistics like we have, it is really time we knuckle down on our bad driving habits.

So often I see my own speedo creep up, and have to ease off the gas or drive to the conditions.

And often I am extremely tempted to check my phone while behind the wheel.

We are all guilty of that, but the difference is that I don’t do it; I will not speed, I will not

but feel we as a society are not doing enough.

text and I would never drink and drive.

It’s funny how the human brain works, because we all know what is wrong and dangerous yet we still do what we do.

So to make a difference to our statistics, because after all each one is a life, think of each other, think of our friends, our whanau and our communities and make sure you teach and share safe driving practices to ensure those we love come home.

Police shoot terror suspect Political leaders have praised the efforts of two police officers injured in a knife attack by a terror suspect who was shot dead.

But concerns have been raised over community hostility towards Muslims.

An 18-year-old Narre Warren man, Numan Haider, died outside a Melbourne suburban police station after knifing a federal police counter-terrorism officer and a Victoria Police senior constable.

Mr Haider had been asked to attend the station to answer questions about his recent behaviour, such as making comments in support of terrorism, although police later agreed he had made no “specific” threats.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott - in New York for talks with other world leaders on measures to deal with the threat of foreign fighters joining Islamic State, or ISIL, extremists phoned the wives of the two officers to reassure them.

The AFP officer and his state police colleague were in a stable condition yesterday after both had surgery.

“Obviously, this indicates that there are people in our community who are capable of very extreme acts,” Mr Abbott told reporters in Hawaii.

“It also indicates that the police will be constantly vigilant to protect us against people who would do us harm.”

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the incident was a reminder of the bravery of those who serve in Australia’s police and security agencies.

“Our thoughts are also with the family of a young man who may be asking themselves more questions than there are answers,” he said.

At least 10 airstrikes hit suspected Islamic State positions yesterday in an eastern Syrian town near the Iraqi border, activists said.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the airstrikes in and around Boukamal, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. But the activist group cited locals as saying the intensity of the air raids was similar to that of strikes on the town early Tuesday by the US-led military coalition.

There was no immediate comment from the United States or its Arab allies.

The American-led coalition conducted more than 200 airstrikes on Tuesday against roughly two dozen targets in Syria, including several in the Boukamal area along the

Syria-Iraq border. The Islamic State group controls a vast stretch of territory spanning the frontier.

The dismembered body of a sixyear-old Japanese girl has been found in several plastic bags near her home, officials say. Breath test for TB A simple breath test may one day show whether someone has a strain of tuberculosis that will respond to a frontline antibiotic, or a drug-resistant type, scientists say. Building on previous work for a fast-track breath test, their new prototype technique looks for traces of nitrogen gas emitted by the disease-causing germ Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Strains of the microbe which respond to the drug isoniazid have an enzyme called KatG that reacts to the antibiotic by releasing nitrogen.

Drought in China The corn has grown to only half its normal height on Yan Shuqin’s ranch in the hills of Inner Mongolia this year, as a swath of northern China suffers its worst drought in 60 years. Groundwater in her region had been sinking, from 20 metres below the surface just a few years ago to as much as 80 metres this past summer. While she can still eat and sell the corn, lettuce and other vegetables on her farm, the yield has shrunk.

After a season of record-breaking drought across China, groundwater levels have hit historic lows this year in northeast and central parts of China where hundreds of millions of people live.

Positive drug test wins $14,000 D

espite having a Drug and Alcohol Policy and an employee who tested positive for cannabis after a random test, Fulton Hogan Nelson were found to have unjustifiably disadvantaged and dismissed Jesse Kenmare.

He was awarded more than $14,000 after raising a personal grievance.

Although the policy did not provide for random drug testing the Collective Agreement (CA) specifically allowed for it.

The threshold for tetrahydrocannabinol acid according to the policy was 15 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) of urine. Kenmare’s results showed he had more than 300 ng/ml. He was stood down without pay.

Although the policy was clear on the circumstance for unpaid suspension relating to testing under other circumstances, it did not give details for random testing.

The Employment Relations Authority (ERA) therefore concluded the company was unjustified in standing Kenmore down without pay.

For this aspect of the personal grievance he was awarded $3472.20 plus interest in lost wages and $4000 in compensation.

Fulton Hogan conducted a disciplinary investigation and Kenmare gave the explanation that three to four days prior to the testing he had inadvertently eaten one or two cannabislaced cupcakes at a party.

The company contacted a number of people to seek their expert opinion on whether Kenmare’s explanation was feasible.

The consensus was the test result would likely have been lower under the circumstances described.

Although this information was put to Kenmore, the company refused to identify the experts they consulted.

Fulton Hogan also contacted the employer of Kenmore’s friend. They advised no testing had been done.

The company concluded Kenmore was not being truth-

ful.

Unfortunately they did not put this conclusion to Kenmore for a response, nor the information relating to his friend.

The company also decided he was not suitable for rehabilitation.

The policy provides for rehabilitation, although notes Fulton Hogan reserves the right not to offer rehabilitation.

The ERA concluded that a fair and reasonable employer would have put all the information to Kenmore, including why he was considered unsuitable for rehabilitation.

By failing to do so Fulton Hogan unjustifiably dismissed Kenmore. It was, however,

Unfortunately once again shortfalls in a disciplinary process were the reason an employer was unsuccessful.

For the unjustified dismissal Kenmore was awarded a further three months’ lost wages and $1000 compensation.

Court to decide when Serepisos’ bankruptcy ends

By HamisH FletcHer Terry Serepisos (above) is to have his financial affairs examined in front of a High Court judge, who will decide when the former reality TV star and football club owner is to be released from bankruptcy.

The Official Assignee – which manages personal insolvencies – confirmed on Tuesday it had objected to Mr Serepisos’ release from bankruptcy, which would normally last for three years.

Declared bankrupt in 2011 owing about $203 million, Mr Serepisos was due to be discharged this October – until the OA filed the formal objection

with the High Court at Wellington.

“This means that he will not be automatically discharged from his bankruptcy when he becomes eligible for discharge on October 7, 2014,” an OA spokesman said.

Instead, Mr Serepisos is due to appear in the High Court at Wellington for a hearing where his financial affairs will be examined.

The court would decide when Mr Serepisos would be released from bankruptcy, the spokesman said. No date has been set for this hearing.

The OA filed its opposition to Mr Serepisos’ release from

bankruptcy on September 11 – well before the former property developer was arrested and taken to court over child support for his 19-year-old son.

Mr Serepisos was arrested on Monday night after arriving at Wellington Airport from Greece, where he was looking after his mother.

Bankrupts need permission from the OA to travel overseas.

Asked whether Mr Serepisos had approval for the trip and how he funded it, the spokesman said: “Information of this nature about a bankrupt’s affairs is normally withheld from third parties in order to protect the bankrupt’s privacy.”

Irrigation is only for flat land!

The myth that irrigation only occurs on flat land is set to be dispelled with the release of a new guidebook targeting farmers irrigating within New Zealand’s hilly regions.

IrrigationNZ has developed the resource book, with the support of the Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF), to help hill country farmers successfully adapt irrigation for steeper slopes.

The guidebook outlines the best irrigation systems for hill country properties and provides advice to minimise run-off and improve water retention on slopes with high gradients.

IrrigationNZ project manager Paul Reese, who co-authored the guidebook, says while many New Zealanders associate irrigation with the Canterbury Plains and flatter areas of New Zealand, irrigation on hill country farms is increasingly common.

“Advances in technologies, combined with favourable economics, have encouraged irrigation development in many hillier areas not traditionally considered for irrigation,” Mr Reece said.

“Areas such as Central and North Otago, the foothills along Canterbury and in eastern parts the North Island have seen growth in irrigation on sloping ground covering a wide variety of crops and pasture.

“In many parts of New Zealand irrigating using natural contours has been happening for decades but more automated

and efficient equipment and infrastructure is now being used over a larger area.”

“Achieving efficient irrigation on hill country is more challenging than on flat land and demands a greater level of skill, as well as specific design tailored to the property.

“The critical challenge is to keep the water in the plant root zone avoiding and minimising run-off. Our guide book offers solutions to these problems, alongside a review of the relative merits of the different methods of irrigation that suit hill slopes in New Zealand.”

The Hill Country Irrigation guidebook will be launched at IrrigationNZ’s Great Irrigation Challenge training and education event in Ashburton midday next Friday October 3. Hill country farmers and irrigators from catchments with steep terrain are welcome to attend.

The guidelines, co-authored

by AgResearch, Landcare Research and Aqualinc, are relevant to all irrigated areas in New Zealand where slope has the potential to cause irrigation water to move off-site as either surface or subsurface flow. Additional input came from Precision Irrigation and the North Otago Irrigation Company, in the form of support for field trials conducted in North Otago.

DairyNZ will be holding its annual meeting in Timaru next month, reporting on financial results and investment priorities and announcing the results of its director elections.

DairyNZ chairman John Luxton says the 2013/14 year was probably the best he has seen in his lifetime.

“There was record milk production from New Zealand farms, a strong market and an excellent payout,” he says in DairyNZ’s just-released annual report.

“The greatest highlight of the past year for me as chairman of DairyNZ was the record farmer support for continuing the milksolids levy.

This was a vote of confidence for our ‘industry good’ work, including research, development, extension and advocacy.”

While the past season was one out of the box, John Luxton says the prospect of the new season’s lower milkprice is a reminder of the volatility of the industry.

“DairyNZ is well-placed to support farmers going forward, reporting a surplus for the 2013/14 year of $6.1 million,” he said.

“This was higher than expected due to a record level of milksolids production. The surplus was further inflated due to the inclusion of additional income from the revaluation of existing land of $2.5 million.

“We’ll be reporting on all our financial results and DairyNZ’s investment priorities at our AGM in Timaru on October 16.

“We alternate our meetings between the North and South Islands. This is the first time we’ve had an AGM in South Canterbury and I encourage all our local farmers to attend.

“We welcome farmer feedback and this is a great opportunity to talk to the board in person.”

Good news of a total payout of $8.50 per kilogram of milksolids (kg/MS) for the 2013-14 season has been tempered by a sharp downwards revision for this season’s forecast ($5.30kg/ MS), for Fonterra’s farmer shareholders.

“The 2014/15 season which offered so much has turned into a break-even one for not just Fonterra suppliers but the entire industry,” Federated Farmers dairy chairperson Andrew Hoggard says.

“Like Synlait’s revision this week, there is a good news and bad news dimension in this.

The good news is that we take the 2013/14 confirmed payout and the lowest revised forecast for 2014/15, we are talking an average total of $7kg/MS across the two seasons.

“A $5.30kg/MS milkprice is also a lot higher than some commentators had expected, if the forecast sticks. ‘If ’ being a little word with a big meaning.

“Losing 70 cents kg/MS on the milkprice is really going to hurt. Farmers will be kicking capital works into touch and will be pruning herds to rid themselves of any passengers.”

According to DairyNZ, farm working expenses this season, before depreciation and interest payments, are expected to be around $4 kg/MS this season.

“When you start paying back the bank manager, the average cash costs on-farm head up to $5.40 kg/MS,” Mr Hoggard said.

X-factor will appeal M

eet the BMW X4 35d - whose unusual looks, especially the sloping rear roof-line, you’ll be unlikely to forget.

But then you’d also definitely be unlikely to forget an open road ride in it, especially one with some challenging corners.

Even more so if you are fortunate enough to get drive it.

Why? Well firstly, beneath the bonnet is a 3 litre, twin-turbo diesel six developing 230kW of power and 630Nm of torque.

The latter from 1500-2500rpm, which the very smart eight-speed auto really makes the most of.

Especially so when selecting Sport or Sport Plus from the four modes offered by the performance control system, which makes it is possible for this 1900kg SUV to race from 0 to 100km/h in a very quick sportscar-like 5.2 seconds.

Not that the acceleration isn’t still very impressive and always appreciated in the Comfort mode, which I used most of the time.

And while the diesel is very quiet at both at idle and cruise (just 1400rpm at 100km/h), its response is immediate, while its soundtrack, when provoked, is quite delightful!

Yet it has claimed an overall fuel use figure of 6.0L/100km combined.

And while this is obviously very unlikely to happen when exploring the performance potential, the computer showed 6.7L/100km for a

return drive to the Hermitage.

On that drive, the X4 showed that its steering, handling, and ride mirror its performance capabilities, for it’s sharp and swift through corners of any difficulty.

While the variable sports steering is electric, it has both ideal weighting and feel.

And there’s huge grip, courtesy of the variable all-wheel-drive system.

This includes an active rear diff, which splits the drive from left to right as needed.

As well there’s fittingly big Pirelli Zero tyres on the 20-inch wheels245/40s at front and 275/35s at back.

Though it’s relatively tall (ground clearance is 204mm), body roll is so well restrained and the ride and cornering so assured.

So much so that the front seat passenger, who usually quickly notices, and voices disapproval, continued to concentrate on her i-Pad for the duration of an enjoyable, virtually traffic free drive on the twisting roads between Geraldine and Fairlie.

During which I used the paddles, but decided everything happens so very well without manual interference, my input definitely wasn’t needed.

While it has that tenacious allwheel drive grip, decent ground clearance, hill descent control and the performance to be up the mountain first, the shape of the X4 probably means you’ll need to get your

Oh yes, time for some more about that rather controversial shape, which is pretty much a scaled down, mirror image of the not-very-common-in-NZ X6.

Which BMW says overseas remains a niche hit because of its looks.

And is “the answer to the question that nobody asked’.

So they created a more affordable package of it with the X4.

Which while it shares virtually everything underneath with the new X3, the only common body parts are the bonnet and doors.

The rest of the body is different.

We get two models of the X4, both are all-wheel-drive and made in South Carolina, USA. The 20d costs from $99,500 and has a 2.0 litre 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, while the 35d is $129,990.

While the outside is definitely visually different, on the inside it is pretty much generic BMW, so has very driver-focused controls both on the dash and centre console,

there’s orange-lit displays and a large centre 8.8-inch colour screen for the comprehensive infotainment system.

The system has many menus, even a concierge service, and is controlled by a large centrally-mounted rotary dial and subsidiary buttons.

Although you sit a bit lower, the X4 still delivers an elevated view from its great, sports front seats.

These are complete with heaters, lumbar support and lots of adjustment.

Furnishings are in decently soft, black leather.

While the view to the rear is compromised, the myriad of sensors and camera to make parking reasonably easy.

Other standard features include excellent bi-Xenon headlights, satnav, dual climate air-con, and great sound system.

While there’s space for three in the rear two up are best to enjoy the journey.

While very tall people may be bothered by the smaller rear doors and sloping roof, these were certainly fine for standard-sized me, as was the knee and foot space.

There’s a power tailgate for the usable 500-litre luggage space.

While the sloping roof precludes really bulky items, the rear seat split-folds 40:20:40 to release a total of 1400 litres.

No spare wheel, just an emergency repair/inflation kit.

AshColl Cricket Ashburton College First XI cricketers head to Australia on Friday for a weeklong pre-season tour on the Sunshine Coast. The side has three 50-over games and two T20s during the week, including matches against Caloundra, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast.

The players have been fundraising for the trip for the past 10 months and have been training during winter to be ready for the games, which start on Sunday.

Coach Greg Jopson said the side, and its supporters, were looking forward to the matches, which would help the team prepare for the Canterbury secondary school competition which starts later in October.

He said the travelling group had been well supported by the community and sponsors, including Rural Transport which had donated travel bags for the players. The team ran a picking competition throughout the Super 15 season and organised a quizco, which many local businesses supported by donating prizes.

“The team has really appreciated that support and would like to thank all the sponsors and generous supporters in the community and local businesses.”

The next concert will be our last concert for the year - a Public concert on October 11. Because the Sinclair Centre is unavailable on this night, the concert will be held in St Andrew’s Church – next to the Sinclair Centre - at 7.30pm.

Ashburton Rose Group The Ashburton Rose Group enjoyed a lovely trip to the Leeston area for its September meeting. Firstly we visited David Bell Daffodils. We were all able to pick a big bunch of daffodils to take home. June, our hostess from David Bell Daffodils, told us about the growing of daffodils and was able to answer our questions. We then went to Jo Frees garden. Jo welcomed us to her beautiful garden and we were able to sit outside and have our lunch. The garden was lovely, just coming to life after the winter, with blossom trees, rhodes, hostas, winter roses and bulbs. We all agreed that we would love to go back and visit the garden in November, when the roses are flowering. We then went to Mill Bridge Rhododendrons, where Louise Harkness showed us her nursery and we were able to buy rhododendrons of all shapes ad sizes and colour. We then went into Leeston for a nice cup of coffee before heading home.

Seniornet Ashburton We have had a few workshops/forums for September. The tablet, iPad and phone evenings are still well attended and we all learn something new every time. As a follow up from the evening at Noel Leeming, Sam is going to give us a presentation on tablet and iPads at our

October question and answer afternoon.

We have been having a few one on one sessions, as members are still wanting to learn different skills. In our September Q&A Robin Pride gave a presentation on scanning photos to your computers. It was enjoyed by all who attended. We thanked Robin. He is working on downloading videos to DVDs and we will have a workshop/forum on this subject, when Robin is ready. Downloading photos was very popular and we will run another forum, if the interest is there. As the weather is getting warmer, members are enjoying this and we will be quietly winding down for the year.

Forums/Workshops for September/ October: “Saving to your computer, memory stick and external Hardrive, two classes and times to suit members. Tuesday, September 30 10am and 1.30pm workshop. St John Fellowship The September meeting of St John Fellowship was held in the St John rooms with a good attendance of members.

After the formal part of the meeting a shared meal was enjoyed followed by a most interesting talk by one of the members Dick Bennett on a subject very dear to his and his wife’s hearts, fuchsias. Dick showed us some early flowers of differing types and many beautiful photos of the flowers and plants in full bloom. He was thanked and given a gift.

We hope to visit his place in the summer to view their collection.

Plains Ladies Probus Club As president Sandy Saussey was unable to be at the meeting Audrey Lowe took the chai. Members and two visitors were welcomed. Letters were received and read out from Joan Moore and Noeline Murdoch thanking the club for the presentation on their Life Membership. There is a visit and morning tea on September 29 to Aeroview. The cost is $15. The movie for next month is on 1st October at the Regent Theatre at 11am is Magic in the Moonlight. A trip to Visit Surrey Hills garden is also being arranged for November 3, the cost is $8 and travel by own transport. Take your own lunch and enjoy the country air. Audrey then welcomed Mark Prendergast from the Ashburton Police to speak to us.

Annette McCully was our main speaker and spoke to us all about her horse riding days and growing up with a handicap of a cleft foot which stopped her from playing sport so had a pony and rode it to school. Joined up with pony clubs and started winning events and took on show jumping. With encouragement from the late George Kelly went on up to the North Island winning events.

After travelling overseas with a friend for some time she married and carried on travelling all around the country show jumping. With one of her horses, Mighty Tarne, she competed for New Zealand.

Annette also trained race horses. After leaving the family farm she became a real estate agent which she enjoyed for 25 years. She also spent time with Mark Todd and has rode Charisma. Audrey thanked Annette for her interesting talk.

The next meeting is October 20.

Young trainers take turn in spotlight

It can be hard yakka at times this harness racing industry – especially if you’re a young aspiring person with hopes and dreams of one day being at the top.

Just ask any young trainer or driver who is trying to foot it with the big boys and girls of the sport on a weekly basis and they’ll tell you on no uncertain terms that if it wasn’t for the

I’ve known them both for a long time and have watched as they have invested a lot of time, effort and money into getting themselves established with the help of their families.

Sure, they might not be winning races on a weekly basis, but they are doing the best with what they have got.

You wouldn’t consider the horses they are taking to the races to be top liners, but the

pair seem to be able to get the best out of them and earn a result for the owners who have given them the opportunity to train their horse.

Chapel Lane is the perfect example of that.

He was purchased for a small figure by a group of enthusiasts and sent to Lawrence and Chauntel.

His 34 starts prior to joining their stable from his old base of

Southland had netted a handful of minor placings, but hardly anything to get too excited about.

In three starts for his new trainers Chapel Lane has finished fourth, fifth and then was successful on Sunday – arguably against tougher opposition than what he has previously faced.

And if that’s not something to be happy about, then who knows what is.

Rampant Harbour sink Canterbury North Harbour engineered the boilover of the season, tipping over the competition leaders 2924 with a committed and largely composed display in Albany last night.

It was just their second victory of 2014, and the sixth by a championship side over a Premiership outfit.

Their heroes were many but hooker James Parsons, tighthead Nic Mayhew, loosies Brandon Nansen and Leigh Thompson, and centre Matt Vaega stood out.

Canterbury were mostly flat and offered little but lateral attack after an opening burst.

At 52 minutes, Thompson broke free and looked to have bombed a try but eventually found replacement Niko Ratumaitavuki, who sliced through to score by the posts for a 15-point lead. Canterbury clawed back but it was all too late.

In the opening spell, Canterbury owned the first 10 minutes, and North Harbour the next 30.

Nathaniel Apa could not believe his luck after 20 seconds, while hooker Codie Taylor flopped over the line off a lineout drive for what may have been the easiest try of his life.

That was it for Canterbury, barring a late Willi Heinz try, as the North Harbour pack gradually asserted itself and monopolised possession.

Thompson finished off a tremendous team try, then Tevita Li sprang to life, running a diagonal angle at top speed to score between the uprights after a nice inside flick by Matt McGahan. When Parsons followed up a Daniel Halangahu break to score by the posts, the home side had overturned a 14-0 deficit to lead by five. It could have been more if referee Paul Williams had not obstructed Bryn Hall when he was running a direct line to the posts.

It was all a far cry from Canterbury’s 38-0 shellacking of North Harbour on this ground in 2013.

North Harbour has little time to come down off this high, hosting Hawke’s Bay on Saturday night. Canterbury, with Dan Carter due back in the starting XV after his leg fracture, will be at home to Southland on Sunday.

The Peak to Pub continues its recent tradition of changing things up for the 15th edition of the multisport race on Saturday.

The competitors will ski, bike and run their way from the top of Mt Hutt to the finish line at the Blue Pub in Methven.

The race has featured a few alterations in recent years and this weekend’s race will continue that tradition.

Instead of something new, the run course has undergone a slight alteration harking back to the original race.

“With a number of trees

down around last year’s track the running route is pretty much back to the old course with a slight change,” race coordinator Alex Watson said.

She also said that the racers could expect a big finish but was tight lipped on the details.

The challenging race begins at the top of Mt Hutt with a 100m dash to their skis or snowboard for a giant slalom style race to bottom.

From there, the competitors face the heart-stopping 19km descent down the Mt Hutt access road, to the second transition.

The bikes are exchanged for running shoes for the 11km run

into Methven along a slightly different course before meeting the grand finale near the finish.

Most recently it has involved a hay bale tower to climb over and last year’s slip and slide with something again planned this year.

Bad weather has forced the postponement of the race in the last two years, with 230 competitors still turning out for the race on the Sunday last year.

Watson believed they were on track for around 250 entries again this year and that with a reasonable looking forecast they wouldn’t need the postponement day.

Life on the road no hardship

Girls fly flag in Hanan Shield side Nine local girls will run out for the Hanan Shield XV at the South Island Girls’ Rugby Tournament in Timaru.

The girls were all part of the successful Ashburton College Girls’ 1st XV that won the Aoraki Secondary School competition and as Mid Canterbury in

the Hanan Shield tournament.

They meet Southland first on Sunday before Otago and defending champions Canterbury on Monday before the finals on Tuesday.

There are only four teams but that is better than nothing, which is exactly what happened

two years ago when there was no tournament.

The Hanan Shield team has had a win over Otago 27-22 but were outclassed by Canterbury 5-40 but Purdom, who will captain the combined side, said the team was looking forward to the rematch.

This week marks the start of seven tests in seven countries for the All Blacks, a potentially arduous schedule which the team take great care to make as fun as possible.

Flying business class helps, of course. The All Blacks arrived in Buenos Aires by way of Santiago in Chile after a little over 12 hours in the air with more leg room and comfort than most international travellers are blessed with.

But, while it might be easier to get rest up the front of the plane, jetlag remains an issue _ an ailment mitigated by the use of mild sleeping pills and serotonin tablets, as well as spending time outside on arrival.

Once Sunday’s test against Argentina at La Plata is over, the All Blacks roadshow departs for Johannesburg and a test against the Springboks at Ellis Park, before returning to New Zealand.

Their next assignment will be the third Bledisloe Cup test against Australia in Brisbane on October 18, before they prepare for the tests against the USA in Chicago and then England, Scotland and Wales.

Veteran hooker Keven Mealamu said earlier this week it was important for him to make the team his family when he was separated from his own, an attitude which seems to be shared by the rest of the All Blacks.

Another key, according to Kieran Read, is making the most of your time off. If the team plays on a Saturday the players get Wednesday off (Thursday if the match is on Sunday), time often spent shopping, sightseeing or, for some, playing golf.

“You pick up tips and you certainly get a bit more experienced if you’ve done it a few times,” Read said yesterday.

Celtic quest for champs

Titans in trouble Gold Coast are reportedly set to abandon their controversial Robina headquarters.

It’s another setback for the embattled NRL club, who failed to make the finals for the fourth straight year and parted ways with foundation coach John Cartwright in August. News Corp Australia says the Titans haven’t renewed a lease which expires on November 1, partly due to a reported annual rent of $600,000. The Titans issued a “no comment” response when asked about the issue by AAP. If the Titans do move away from the Robina building, it will end a disastrous endeavour for the club. The $10.6 million Centre of Excellence was hailed as one of the most cutting edge club facilities when the Titans constructed the six-storey building in 2009. But with debts of up to $25 million crippling the club’s property arm, the club was forced to sell the facility to Bond University in 2012 with the university then leasing back two levels to the Titans.

ND’s hopes take dent In the space of about an hour, Northern Districts’ ambitions of making the Champions League semifinals took a significant dent yesterday. Twin brothers George and Hugh Donaldson have stepped up to the under 17 age group this year in record-breaking style.

Ski School, the 14-year-olds’ maiden tournament produced a South Island trick record.

The previous mark of 4400 was held by fellow Mid Canterbury skier Ben McFadden, with George first scoring a 4530 only for Hugh to follow up with a 4680 to claim the record. With three

years left in the age group they have every possibility of pushing it further.

Their first opportunity comes at the Oceania-Asia Championships, where both boys are in the under 17 team and in the open team – the youngest skiers to do so. They will compete alongside their older sisters Lana and Rachel.

First of all the boys are off to a New Zealand Ski School with Daniel Odvarko before heading over to Perth for the championships starting October 5.

Due to their age and size they might be behind the eight-ball in slalom and jump but are tipped to be competitive in tricks.

Foster urges patience over Fekitoa Malakai Fekitoa has the daunting task of replacing Ma’a Nonu in what is for him an unfamiliar position against Argentina in Buenos Aires and assistant coach Ian Foster is urging patience over his development.

Almost lost in the hubbub over Aaron Cruden’s late night, missed flight and subsequent promotion to the No10 jersey of Beauden Barrett, is the fact 22-year-old Fekitoa is likely to wear an All Blacks’ No12 jersey for the first time in what will be only his fifth test.

- against the Springboks in Wellington - meant Fekitoa wasn’t required in the match-day squad.

He was named on the reserves bench for the Argentina test in Napier a week earlier but didn’t get a chance to run on.

His last appearance was in the thrashing of Australia at Eden Park, when he came on as a replacement. From there to starting against the Pumas at Estadio de La Plata on Sunday is quite a leap, but Foster has faith in Fekitoa’s ability to cope on the big stage, despite the switch from centre, as the coaches look to cover for Nonu’s unavailabil-

ity due to a broken arm.

“It’s gradual,” Foster told reporters in Buenos Aires of Fekitoa’s development at No12. “He has had bits and pieces on the park and he’s had a reasonable amount of time off the park, so he’s learning. It’s not a natural shift for him. He likes grabbing the ball and running and he’s pretty good at it. There are things he will learn over time but we’ve got a lot of patience for it. He is slowly learning the art of distribution and decision making and some of the different functions he’s got [to do].”

Fekitoa spent time there in

his first test - against England at Eden Park in June - but has started his two tests at centre and is considered more of a natural No13.

Centre Conrad Smith said: “He’s got a massive upside as a rugby player. It’s tough moving from centre. I’m not doing it and I never have and that’s because although it is a midfield position - I think people assume it’s very similar and while there are some similar parts to the game there is a lot that is different. He has obviously had a really good leader in Ma’a to follow.”

On hearing Smith’s assess-

ment, Foster added: “I think you need to consider how long it took to grow some of those aspects in Ma’a’s game. It has been in the latter few years that Ma’a has really added huge value with his decision making and distribution and his kicking, so it’s a massive ask for Mala to jump in early in his career, change positions and do what we have had Ma’a do in the latter part of his career. It’s going to take time.”
