She might be one of the youngest members of this year’s team of Ashburton District councillors, but Liz McMillan is the one with the most powerful job. McMillan is mayor Neil Brown’s number one choice for the two IC job of deputy mayor, and while she’s admits to being surprised,
she said it was both an honour and a privilege to accept the position. “Neil asked me if I’d consider it and I was a wee bit surprised, I had a couple of sleepless nights before I accepted but now I feel pretty good about it,” she said. With several terms on the Methven Community Board, time as its chair and with one term as
a district councillor behind her, McMillan said she was comfortable with the governance role. “Council is about balance, you need people from all walks of life. I’m a single mum from Methven and that’s all part of the mix.” The shape of the deputy’s role depends very much on the style of mayor and while Brown is new to the job, she’s confident his ap-

proach will be one of inclusiveness. “It’s all about balance, that’s important. He’ll be quite fair and all councillors will get to do bits and pieces. I’ve been really impressed with his overview and his approach.” When McMillan was elected to council in 2016 she was one of several new councillors with a
first term mayor, Donna Favel. ‘It’s very different this time round having a mayor who has hit the ground running. The way things are fallling into place he’s very, very good,” she said.
