Mid Canterbury has gone from skyrocketing temperatures to plummeting lows this week. Yesterday Ashburton residents enjoyed being at the top of the country’s temperature charts, with the MetService ranking it the hottest place at 4.30pm as the mercury climbed to 28.5°C. This compares to last year’s top October temperature of 24°C and 2016’s top
October temperature of 26°C. Graham’s Weather Station in Ashburton recorded an even more extreme high for the day yesterday, at 29.2°C. Graham’s station is located in the town at Netherby, while the MetService station is in an open field at Ashburton Airport. MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said yesterday the warm weather was caused by a ridge of high pressure. The ridge had given warm temperatures recently and the ground had warmed up,
