Mid Canterbury has gone from skyrocketing temperatures to plummeting lows this week.

Yesterday Ashburton residents enjoyed being at the top of the country’s temperature charts, with the MetService ranking it the hottest place at 4.30pm as the mercury climbed to 28.5°C. This compares to last year’s top October temperature of 24°C and 2016’s top

October temperature of 26°C. Graham’s Weather Station in Ashburton recorded an even more extreme high for the day yesterday, at 29.2°C. Graham’s station is located in the town at Netherby, while the MetService station is in an open field at Ashburton Airport.

MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said yesterday the warm weather was caused by a ridge of high pressure. The ridge had given warm temperatures recently and the ground had warmed up,

Shapes beginning to emerge at symposium

Atoms, a Haast eagle, a mother and child, and a leaf are among forms emerging from stone at the Ashburton Sculpture Symposium.

Sculptors from throughout New Zealand are based at the Ashburton Domain and have been chipping, carving and grinding away in all sorts of weather since the symposium opened on Saturday.

“Horizontal rain slows us down a little bit,” said organiser Brent Holley.

However, the weather to date had been no trouble at all, and hot weather yesterday meant sculptors simply had to make

use of sunscreen provided by the Cancer Society, as well as hats and gazebos for shade.

Rain forecast for today would not slow the artists down, but could have the beneficial effect of keeping dust at bay.

Among sculptors on site is Paul Deans of Christchurch. He has recently completed a bas-relief work in stone of his late father, renowned New Zealand landscape painter Austen Deans, which will be unveiled at Peel Forest on November 18.

Deans said he was enjoying the Ashburton symposium, and was in the process of carving a figure climbing through the stone.

“I just love the shape, and want-

ed to do as little as possible to it.”

Sculpting will continue throughout next week, and the symposium, near the West Street public toilets, is open for viewing

to members of the public.

There will be a one-week exhibition preceding a family fun day and on-site auction of pieces on November 11.

Solicitor-General appeals sentence The Solicitor-General yesterday appealed for a harsher prison term for an Auckland mum who forced her teen daughter to work as a sex slave, selling her at least 1000 times to men around the city.

In March Kasmeer Lata, 36, was jailed for six years and 11 months for dealing in slaves, dealing in a person under 18 for sexual exploitation, and receiving earnings from commercial sexual services from an underage person.

Justice Matthew Muir also imposed a minimum period of imprisonment of three years and five months.

Lata, 36, first forced her daughter to have sex for money with a man on her 15th birthday.

She would go on to sell the girl at least 1000 times for sex.

The maximum sentence for dealing in slaves under New Zealand law is 14 years’ imprisonment.

At Lata’s sentencing Crown Prosecutor Natalie Walker called for the offending to be denounced in the most explicit terms.

Justice Muir said Lata’s offending caused “long-lasting, if not

irreparable damage to her daughter” as she “effectively pimped her out”.

“New Zealand’s courts will not [tolerate] the prostitution of children,” he said.

“Children are entitled to the love and care of their parents – not to be farmed out for financial gain.”

However his sentence was soon appealed by the Solicitor-General, who wants Lata to do more time behind bars to reflect the severity of her offending.

The appeal was heard in Auckland yesterday by Justice Brendan Brown, Justice Patricia Courtney and Justice Sarah Katz.

Deputy Solicitor General Brendan Horsley said the sentence handed down did not reflect the seriousness of Lata’s offending and Justice Muir was, effectively, too lenient.

He said Justice Muir set a starting point that was too low, which meant the end sentence was not adequate.

“This is a case that went, to say off the rails would be overstated, but departed from best practice and from the Sentencing Act,”

Horsley submitted.

He said Justice Muir started his sentencing on the basis that he was “obliged to impose the least restrictive outcome appropriate in the circumstances”.

“With great respect that’s in fact not an appropriate way to start this particular sentencing exercise,” said Horsley.

Justice Muir’s starting point was 9 years and 6 months in prison.

Lata was then given discounts for factors including her guilty plea, which spared the victim going through a trial.

However Horsley said that starting point should have been set at at least 12 years, which would have meant a longer end sentence for Lata.

He said a sentence closer to the maximum penalty available should have been imposed to reflect Lata’s offending, which he said was “some of the most serious offending of its kind”.

“This was a case where it’s probably fair to say all parties involved accepted that this was offending either near to or at the most serious of its kind for the particular offences,” Horsley said.

“At the very least you can say this was near the most serious of cases ... That is the bottom line that the Solicitor-General maintains in this case.

Horsley said Justice Muir also erred in giving discount for a lack of violence.

While there was no physical violence, Horsley said what Lata did to her daughter was “more insidious”.

She “coerced” her into sexual activity, telling her if she did not make money her younger brothers would not get food.

“She tried to withdraw and was charged for rent, internet ... this was a 15-year-old child with no other means of income,” Horsley said.

He said the victim was in New Zealand unlawfully and had “no ability to go to the authorities” for help.

Lata “deliberately isolated” the girl, keeping her out of school, so she could work as a prostitute and earn more than $100,000 in 18 months – most of which was handed over to her mother.

Lata’s lawyer Karl Trotter said while he agreed the offending

was among the most serious, the sentence handed down by Justice Muir was appropriate.

He submitted that there was far worse offending than Lata’s and Horsley was “short of the mark” in his appeal grounds.

“This offending, bad as it is, is a distance away from the most serious of its type,” said Trotter. “(Justice Muir) took into account everything he should have.

“My submission is that he delivered a sentence that was adequate and falls short of a mark that is manifestly inadequate.”

The appeal decision has been reserved.

Lata’s partner Avneensh Sehgal was also jailed for his part in the sexual offending.

He was sentenced to four years and eight months’ imprisonment with a minimum period of two years and four months.

Before Lata, only two others had been convicted over dealing in slaves under New Zealand legislation.

Both Lata and Sehgal will be deported to Fiji and India, respectively, at the conclusion of their sentences.

Methven Scouts to mark centenary in grand style By matt markham

They might officially be six years late to the party, but it’s not going to stop the Methven Scouts from celebrating 100 years of existence in grand style next month.

Organisers having been working hard behind the scenes to have everything ready for the special event which is being held between November 2 and November 4.

Significantly it also coincides with the Mania-o-Roto District Scout Rally which is being held at the Methven Showgrounds.

Spokesperson, Mark Jacobs said everything was in place and registrations were still flowing in for the event which will likely see a number of people returning to Methven for the weekend.

“We’ve had some good feedback and a lot of interest, so it’s been really encouraging,” Jacobs said.

The event will begin with a meet and greet on the Friday night which will be the perfect opportunity for everyone to catch up and spend some time reminiscing about their time in the Methven Scouts.

On Saturday evening an adult only dinner will be held where world-renowned multisport athlete, Braden Currie – himself a former member of the Methven Scouts will be the guest speaker.

Jacobs said that it wasn’t too late to become involved in the event.

“We are welcoming all past leaders, scouts, cubs, committee, parents of scouts and their partners to the event,” he said.

Multi-cultural council for Ashburton

Ashburton’s increasing multi-culturalism will soon receive greater recognition with the establishment of a multi-cultural council and a migrants’ centre.

Similar councils and centres have been established in several other towns and cities and Ashburton’s is likely to be modelled on those in Timaru and Oamaru.

The development of the Hakatere Multi-Cultural Council is being driven by the New-

comers’ Network.

When it is established it will become the umbrella under which the network and the migrant centre run.

Being part of that national network of councils will give migrants and their needs greater visibility and a greater voice, Newcomers’ Network co-ordinator Adi Avnit said.

The issue of a multi-cultural council has been raised several times by several organisations, and with the number of migrants

steadily growing in the Ashburton District it and a migrant centre were overdue, he said.

“This is the evolution of the original Newcomers’ Network.”

The New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils is a nongovernment body acting as an umbrella organisation for the ethnic communities of New Zealand.

Its primary role is to promote, support and share information among the territorial authorities and New Zealand’s ethnic communities.

The new council has already had its name and constitution approved and is waiting sign off from the Charities Commission.

Once the paper work is completed, early in the new year, Avnit said the project will go out for public consultation around its goals and its strategic plan.

He anticipates the migrant centre could be set up as part of his office in Community House with set hours when migrants could call in for advice and support.

Growing a show from the ground up

It could be any showgrounds, any provincial town in New Zealand – machinery on the move, tents half erected, dozens of volunteers hammering pegs into the ground.

But this is the Ashburton Showgrounds just one day shy of day one of this year’s A&P show.

When the gates open early Friday morning, the public face of the 141st show public will be seen in the show ring, the cattle and sheep pens, on the dancing board, in the produce shed and the dog trial ring.

But that’s only half the story, Preparations for every show start months before the gates open, often not long after the wash up from each year’s event.

And in the week leading up to day one, it’s all hands on deck.

Nikki’s fundraising auction to go online Saturday

Supporters of myalgic encephalomyelitis and lyme disease sufferer, Nikki Tyrrell, are planning an online auction to raise money towards their sick friend’s treatment.

A range of donated items including a photo session, Marlborough holiday home stay, tool package, makeup, jewellery, gardening services, home décor items, art, and beauty and massage vouchers make up the wide range of items for sale.

“We are still getting more items just about every day, it’s fantastic to have so much support from businesses and individuals,” supporter Jane Tait said.

“We have been humbled by the support from Ashburton people, as well as those from the wider Canterbury region, in Methven, and even Christchurch.”

The auction, beginning at 7pm Saturday night on Nikki’s Fight Facebook page, replaces a live auction evening. This was cancelled following a lack of ticket sales.

It follows a sell-out concert which raised $10,000 last month, and a Givealittle page which is at $4955.

Tyrrell is aiming to raise $70,000 for specialist treatment in Cyprus.

Trade deal passes third reading One of the country’s most controversial trade deals has passed its third reading, paving the way for access to up to 480 million consumers across 11 countries.

The passing of The Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in Parliament yesterday changes a number of laws to allow New Zealand to ratify the deal.

It will come into effect 60 days after New Zealand joins five other

signatories in ratifying the agreement.

“It goes beyond just reducing costs for business,” said Minister of State for Trade and Export Growth Damien O’Connor.

“It contains the most comprehensive outcomes on labour and the environment that New Zealand has ever achieved in a trade agreement. These are legally enforceable for the first time.”

The agreement has been the

source of much controversy in recent years, with thousands of people taking to the streets in Auckland to protest the deal in 2016.

But the controversy has died down since Labour took power.

Side letters have also been signed that narrow the scope for investor-state dispute settlement claims against New Zealand.

O’Connor said the CPTPP would open access for exporters to 480 million consumers

across 11 countries.

It would also put New Zealand in a position to play a role in shaping the rules in the future global trade environment.

Notably, the Trump administration withdrew from TPP in 2017.

But the remaining countries persisted and later that same year, the TPP was renamed the CPTPP after a number of changes were made.

This was welcomed by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who said

the Government wanted to take a different position on ISDS than its predecessors.

The Greens have been against the deal since its inception. The party’s trade spokesperson Golriz Ghahraman reaffirmed the Greens’ opposition to the deal.

“We’ve always opposed deals which prioritise money over the environment and working people’s rights and continue to do so with this bill.”

ASHBURTON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Impressive showing Ashburton Intermediate earned an impressive result at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Mountain Bike Champs in Dunedin over the holidays, placing 21st out of 65 schools.

Principal Brent Gray said it was a fantastic result considering the team was made up of only three Year 7 students who are all fairly new to the sport. Riders could chose to compete in the enduro, downhill and cross country events, with overall winners selected from students that competed in all three events.

Gracie Trotter was the overall winner of the under 13 girls’ grade after placing first in the enduro and second in both the downhill and cross country events. She also received a sportsmanship award for her determination to carry on racing after some big crashes.

Kayne Johnston finished a credible fifth overall in the under-13 boys’ category after placing a consistent seventh in all three events. Nick Collie competed in the downhill and cross country events, but unfortunately crashed in the cross country and had to pull out due to injury.

“The children really enjoyed themselves and we can’t wait to see how well they do in next year’s event,” Gray said.

Those flashing lights mean pull over E

mergency services watching is something we do quite well here on the top floor of Somerset House.

The fire alarm goes off, or the wail of a siren rings through the air and we’re off to the balcony to get an idea of the direction in which they might be headed.

What the few minutes does highlight though is the absolute ineptitude of some road users when it comes to clearing a safe passage for our emergency vehicles to get to their destination.

As I watched two ambulances, a fire engine and a host of police cars fly through the centre of town yesterday afternoon, on their way to a medical event, I

was shocked to watch the sheer ignorance of some drivers who continued to carry on their same path when quite clearly impeding the process of one of the vehicles.

It’s not as though it would have been easy to miss them, the bright flashing lights of varying colours and rather loud sirens should ensure you can’t over-

look their presence.

For a short distance, being oblivious is acceptable, but watching a car hold up a police vehicle down a long stretch of East Street yesterday was rather painful.

The intention of the police car was there for everyone to see.

Everyone except the car it was stuck behind.

That must make for frustrating times behind the wheel of these rescue cars and trucks.

All they want to do is get as quickly and as safely as you can to the emergency to lend a helping hand.

But instead, having to sit and wait at a set of traffic lights be-

cause no one is paying attention, or losing valuable seconds when a car in front won’t pull over to the side to safely let them past, could actually cost someone their life.

There is a photo circulating on social media currently, from a country overseas, where on their busiest highways – and we’re talking probably even extreme for Auckland – if there is an accident and traffic is backed up, everyone moves to the side of the road automatically to allow a clear path for emergency services.

No one worries about not getting home in time to watch their favourite television show, nor

do they feel panicked about not making it to that all-important meeting on time.

The focus is on giving help, the best hand that you can.

It’s something we should look at adopting here in New Zealand.

We’re known as a kind and considerate bunch of people, but this is one instance where we don’t always show it.

If you see flashing lights flying up behind you or hear the wail of a siren, pull over.

You never know, that 30 seconds you’ve taken out of your life – might just be the difference when it comes to someone else keeping theirs.

Christmas bells and holiday hells I

’ve been a bit tardy.

Usually, Labour weekend signals the start of the Christmas season build-up for our business and that long weekend normally sees us dust off the Santa sleigh and hoist it to the ceiling with Rudolph out front.

Each year it becomes that little bit harder, not necessarily through any lack of enthusiasm, more so to do with another year on the ageometer I think.

So that task awaits and the clock is ticking. Better find the time real soon.

I feel particularly behind the eight ball on account that Terry and Sue at Paper Plus have had their Christmas countdown clock ticking in the window for what must be a month now.

Last year the Ashburton District Council really stepped up and invested in some new seasonal adornments for our CBD and Baring Square.

It was a big improvement from what we have had and deserve.

So credit to them for that.

I believe erection time is early December and the only question I’d ask, is why?

There’s a sizeable effort and cost involved in getting these feel-good features into place, although I imagine some goodwill is called on also.

Great.

But why not play it for all it’s worth? None of us will go to jail for putting Christmas decorations up early.

Why not optimise the joy and get them up say mid November?

Admittedly there are some persons who utterly convulse at the prospect of early festive decorating but what is wrong with feeling that little bit more positive, that little bit happier, that feeling of seasonal joy – for an extra week or two?

Don’t mind the grinches. They avoid the threat of happiness at all cost and for a hobby probably delight in pulling the legs off spiders.

You know the type. Sad-arses.

Bugger them.

Anyhoo, with the festive season goes holidays, and for many it may well involve camping.

Safe to say I’m not the world’s most natural and gifted camper.

First experience was in the early ‘70s hitchhiking to Mt Cook with my friend Lester.

We were both only 13 or 14, but you did that in those days.

I don’t think Timaru has since recorded so much rainfall and our small and inefficient and non-waterproof tent was pounded so much that us and everything in the tent was saturated. We retreated to the relative safety of the camp kitchen for the night but our Plan B was short-lived.

The caretaker caught on pretty quickly and obviously having zero empathy for humanity, much like the people who don’t want early Christmas decorations, kicked us out and back into the tent. Lester took all this in his stride, but for myself, a person who considered Outward Bound the trip out to the mailbox, it was unbearable.

I think it was about this point I developed a love of the Rydges Hotel chain.

Roll on the early ‘80s and Mrs Mac and I purchased our first caravan.

We arranged to tow it to Falstone at Lake Benmore and meet up with friends doing the same.

All went relatively well until it was time to brush my teeth. I hunted and hunted and couldn’t find my toothbrush anywhere.

After stepping up the intensity of the mission, I discovered the toothbrush sitting up on top of the window pelmet in the new caravan. Strange place for a toothbrush I thought.

Over to the wash shed I went, turned on the tap and got down to business.

“WHAT THE **##@@**?”

A massively, almost indescribable, putrid and evil taste over-came my mouth and reeling in horror I realised I was using an old toothbrush I had earlier relegated to cleaning up the corrosive battery terminals on the car!

It took gallons of water to flush that out. The taste remained for days. I think there was a lot of mouth washing with Coke as well.

I had canisters for everything including fresh water and sanitising solution for the baby’s bottle and bits. It all looked the same. Clear liquid. There was a misunderstanding of which was which between Mrs Mac and me.

To cut a long story short, I freaked out totally because I thought the baby formula had been made up by mistake with sanitising solution instead of fresh water.

I went into absolute terrified panic. The baby seemed fine but I was hysterically going from caravan to caravan saying, “oh noooo, I think I’ve killed him,” I was utterly beside myself.

No one else seemed overly

concerned and with no obvious signs of distress from the newborn, everything settled down and so did I. But it was a lesson in containers and labelling and being ultra careful.

We duly sold the caravan and everything’s been pretty good since thanks.

Top primary sector bosses shortlisted Dunsandel dairy farmers Michael and Susie Woodward are among finalists vying for the nod of Minister of Primary Industries Damien O’Connor for his new Minister’s award.

The section award is part of the first Primary Industries Good Employer Awards.

The Woodwards were runnersup in the national Sharemilker of the Year awards in 2016-17 and were working towards farm ownership.

They are finalists in one of five category awards and in their section are fellow finalists Stephen Hopkinson, from Taranaki Veterinary Centre, Bruce Beaton, Kristen Nash and Maurice Windle at T&G Global, Ben and Nicky Allomes at Hopelands Dairies and James Trevelyan at Trevelyan’s.

O’Connor said attracting and keeping the best people working in the primary industries was one of the major challenges for the sector.

He said the finalists had shown their commitment to good employment practices such as training, paying and treating staff well and contributing to sustainable business models.

Methven born and raised on those playgrounds is where I spent most of my days. I was the Ashburton Guardian sports reporter for five years, then went to the Northern Outlook/Stuff for just over two years and started at the Selwyn App in April.

Planning under way for NZ champs

Motorists could be forgiven for not giving a farm paddock a second glance when they pass down Wilkinson Road just outside of Chertsey.

The first hint that there is something more to it than meets the eye was yesterday when a group of committee members, some of them wearing ploughing blazers, clustered around a whiteboard on a farm vehicle.

On it is marked out the planning stages for the New Zealand Ploughing Championships to be held on the site during May 11-12.

Farm owner Kate Wilkinson met with the group, including Ian Woolley who was third in the conventional class at the world championships.

New Zealand Ploughing Association president Bruce Redmond said the Wilkinson family had generously allowed Rakaia qualifying events to be held at their farm and had now set aside paddocks for the national championships.

The Chertsey soils would provide flat and even ploughing which would bring the best out of national finalists, he said.

“There is a lot of planning on behalf of the landowners to get their rotation right to have a paddock of grass and barley for the event. We have quite regularly

held matches here over the years including our annual Rakaia qualifying event so they have been very good.’’

Redmond said it was no stretch to say that some of the world’s best ploughmen would be competing in the finals.

The paddocks are in grass and autumn-sown barley, with the

barley field to be in stubble when the first sod is turned. Among the finalists will be Woolley, who will defend his national conventional class title for the Silver Plough, and Bob Mehrtens who will be doing the same in the reversible class.

Ploughmen will also contest the vintage and horse-drawn plough-

ing titles. Not competing next year is Colin Drummond and his Erewhon Station clydesdales as he missed out in a two-way Canterbury qualifying event.

A new addition to the programme is a young farmer class with three or four finalists lined up for the event.

Redmond said a coaching

day had been held for younger ploughmen in Methven and the event had been introduced to get younger people into ploughing.

He was the world conventional champion in 2010, but will be concentrating on his president duties during the ploughing.

“I am not sure whether I am retired or not,’’ he said.

Wilkinson family has long association with competition

Old clydesdale horseshoes are still being ploughed up at the Wilkinson family farm near Cherstey.

The family has been on the fifth generation property since 1876 and Kate Wilkinson is the latest owner.

Wilkinson, a former Minister of Conservation who held other cabinet positions, has a farm manager and staff member on the farm.

She “comes out and helps now and then’’ when she is not on duty

as an Environment Court commissioner.

She said the long family run could be traced back to the first Wilkinson who arrived on the sixth ship to land in Canterbury and walked onto tussock country.

“We are the only ones who ever farmed here and we have photos of the first harvest. They had so many horses then and a lot of what we were doing was growing food for horses. … We are still ploughing up the old clydesdale shoes.’’

When the family arrived the nearest water was at Rakaia River, six miles’ down the road. Horse wagons would have to bring water to the farm until the family could put a roof up that would catch rainwater.

Later, the Rangitata Diversion Race network supplied stock water and made a huge difference’ to the mixed cropping operation.

Today, sheep are run on the property and crops grown include barley, feed wheat, milling wheat, peas and malting barley.

Wilkinson calculated that they grew enough malting barley last season to brew 690,000 litres of Heineken beer.

She said the family was happy to support the New Zealand Ploughing Championships and the farm was big enough to fit ploughing paddocks into the crop rotation.

“We have always had the local competition on the farm and to be honest I just love anything that encourages farming and encourages people to find out more about farmers.’’

Minister changes telco legislation Chorus has agreed to a $46 monthly price cap for its anchor service from July after Telecommunications Minister Kris Faafoi introduced a suite of changes in legislation governing the industry.

The telecommunications network operator set the price on the 100/20 megabit per second service after the government sought a contractual arrangement to rein in the price path before a new regulatory regime comes into place.

Chorus currently charges $45, although it could charge $49.65.

Under the new arrangement, that cap will be lowered to $45 for the period covering July 2018 through June 2019.

The $46 price will take effect in July next year and will form the initial price cap under the new pricing structure effective in 2020.

“This represents a fairer deal for everyone: a good price for New Zealand broadband consumers, and a reasonable price for Chorus,” Faafoi said in a statement.

The minister lodged a supplementary order paper in Parliament yesterday making a number of amendments to legislation enabling the new regulated price structure.

Parliament’s economic development, science and innovation select committee noted the likelihood of an SOP being used to protect consumers from price shocks by setting a cap based on an earlier price path.

Jacinda Ardern is promising no new regional fuel taxes while she is Prime Minister and is accusing National Leader Simon Bridges of spreading “utterly, incorrect, false” information about a Wellington fuel tax.

Under the legislation regional fuel tax legislation, other councils are able to bid for a regional fuel tax from 2020 onwards.

But speaking in the House yesterday, Ardern ruled out implementing any other regional fuel taxes.

“The regional rule tax legislation puts in a date, but I can give this guarantee to this House, and to consumers, there will be no other regional fuel taxes while I am Prime Minister.”

This comes after Bridges told The AM Show yesterday Welling-

ton City Council confirmed it was in early discussions about a fuel tax.

But council spokesman Richard MacLean told media this was not the case.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford also ruled out a Wellington fuel tax.

Twyford also said in a statement Bridges’ comments were categorically wrong.

“The Government has explicitly ruled out a regional fuel tax in Wellington,” he said.

“The Wellington councils have asked for a regional fuel tax. I have ruled it out.

“Like many councils around the country, Wellington was left with a massive infrastructure deficit from the former government. These councils are desperate for funding to build much-needed transport

infrastructure.”

Ardern said Bridges was making “a habit of mischief-making, throwing out yesterday morning completely fake false information about regional fuel taxes that by law cannot be introduced by this House.”

Asked if she, or any of her Ministers, had spoken to any other regional councils aside from Auckland’s, the possibility of implementing a regional fuel tax, she said it was a matter of public record that a number of councils around the countries have asked for one, but her Government would not be providing one.

Before going into the House, she accused Bridges of spreading “utterly, incorrect, false” information about a Wellington fuel tax.

Steel & Tube handed record fine over mesh Steel & Tube Holdings has been ordered to pay a record fine for making misleading representations about steel mesh products that fell short of testing standards.

An Auckland District Court judge yesterday sentenced the company to a fine of $1.89 million on 24 charges under the Fair Trading Act after an earlier guilty plea. The charges, brought by the Commerce Commission, related to conduct spanning four years, where Steel & Tube sold about 480,000 sheets of steel mesh for $24 million from 482 batches.

Steel & Tube misled the public with representations that the mesh met an Australia/New Zealand standard for reinforcing steel when it didn’t, and that the batches had been independently

tested when they hadn’t.

The judge started at a $2.9 million fine for the company, discounted to reflect Steel & Tube’s co-operation and early guilty plea.

“Steel & Tube’s representations arose because senior management of a large company failed to put in place adequate procedures and oversight,” commission chair Mark Berry said in a statement.

“The penalty imposed demonstrates that this is unacceptable and high-risk conduct that undermines the confidence of the public in construction products being sold into the market.”

The company pleaded guilty in August last year, three days before reporting a 22 per cent slump in annual profit. At the time, thenchief executive Dave Taylor said

the company was working with the Commerce Commission to reach an appropriate resolution and that “the expected costs of this prosecution have been accrued, as have any expected proceeds under the group’s insurance policies”, without explicitly stating that it had entered a guilty plea.

Taylor stepped down a month later, ending eight years in charge of the company.

Under new CEO Mark Malpass, Steel & Tube has strengthened its balance sheet with a deeply discounted rights issue, fended off an opportunistic takeover bid by Fletcher Building, and now has its major supplier – New Zealand Steel – as a cornerstone shareholder.

Steel & Tube shares were recently up 1.5 per cent to $1.38. – NZME

■ Beef: Place the beef mince, parsley, breadcrumbs, egg, milk and oregano in a large bowl.

Beef 500g Quality Mark beef mince 1/2 C parsley leaves, finely chopped 1/4 C fresh white breadcrumbs 1 egg 2T milk 1t dried oregano Spaghetti sauce 1 onion, finely sliced 2 x 400g cans chopped tomato in juice 1T red wine vinegar 1t brown sugar (optional) 350g dried spaghetti To serve 2 courgettes, trimmed, peeled into ribbons and blanched 1 bag baby spinach Grated cheese

Season and mix well using clean hands. Divide mince mixture into 16 meatballs, rolling them gently. Place on a large plate, then cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

■ Spaghetti sauce: Heat a dash of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Remove meatballs from the refrigerator and place in the frying pan. Cook until browned, then transfer to

a plate. Lower heat, add the onion and cook until soft. Add the tomatoes, red wine vinegar and sugar, if using. Return meatballs to the frying pan, cover and cook over a low heat for 1 hour. Check from time to time to check they are not sticking to the bottom.

■ Just before the meatballs are cooked, place a large saucepan of lightly salted water on to boil.

Add the spaghetti and cook for 8 minutes. Drain spaghetti reserving about 1C of the cooking water. Add cooking water to the meatballs to loosen the sauce.

■ To serve: Gently toss together the meatballs, sauce, spaghetti and green vegetables and place in a large warmed serving bowl.

Sprinkle with your favourite grated cheese.

Allenton was well represented at the SI Ladies Chartered Clubs with teams of 4 held at Oamaru over a week.

The weather was not kind from the wed but all games were played. The top performance of Noeline Woods’s team went through unbeaten and qualified top but were beaten in the final. Well Done Noeline Raylene, Faye and Anne for this fab effort. Stars!!

Club Championship games are well on the way and hopefully all can be completed on time.

Allenton Croquet Club Our monthly meeting was held on October 17, 2018 and attended by 15 members who were welcomed by our President Ann Sunbeam.

On October 14 two of our members spent a pleasant day playing gold croquet in the Jeff Marshall drawn doubles at Waireka.

Association members participated in the Masters Games in Timaru bringing home three Bronze medals. Well Done.

Fund raising is going well and a big thank you to all members for their support.

A few members delivered Meals on Wheels again for a couple of days but felt this is better done out of season.

Members discussed our Christmas Luncheon and final arrangement to be made at our November meeting.

Next meeting November 14 at 3.15pm.

Ashburton Bowling Club The greens are playing well after a good rain a few days ago. The greens got great reports from the visiting rep players all congratulating our Green Staff. There is ongoing maintenance at the moment with Roger drilling small holes in the No 1 green to improve the water getting further down into the turf. Talking rep games, the club was represented in the ladies by Wendy Suttie, Heather Goodall and Leonie Spargo, and in the Developing by Heather Gray, also Bretton Donaldson making the Canterbury Country Team, well done to those people. Next week Leonie, Heather Gray & Heather Goodall (R) have been picked for the Country Team. At the South Island Ladies Chartered Clubs Ashburton was well represented with Margaret Eder, Heather Goodall, Leonie Spargo and Wendy Herriott gaining 3rd equal, along with Wendy Suttie, Shirley Taylor, Margaret Watson along with Pat McElwain(Meth) winning the Bowl section. The October meeting for Pakeke Lions Club was rescheduled to October 19 when the Club hosted a Dementia Awareness Breakfast to coincide with the visit to Ashburton of Greg Kelly currently touring New Zealand on a sponsored Harley-Davidson, raising Dementia Awareness to as many people in as many places as possible.

In opening the function President Ron Paterson welcomed the 200 attendees and special guests Greg Kelly, Hamish Riach and speakers from Dementia Canterbury. Hamish Riach, lately CEO of Crusaders Canterbury, spoke of the concern that head injuries in contact sport may eventually lead to dementia. It is a possibility but more research needs to be carried out before evidence is conclusive. Most sporting codes are aware of the possibility and have rules in place to deal with the issue.

Darral Campbell, CEO of Dementia Canterbury, supported by Lee Andrews, outlined their programme Living Well With Dementia. There are services and programmes that are available for both People living with Dementia and their Families and Carers. These include Social work Services, Companion volunteers and Educational courses.

The Key Note Speaker Greg Kelly spoke of his Personal Journey with Dementia since being diagnosed at the age of 59. Now at the age of 61 he is determined to bring the message of Dementia Awareness and the importance of living well. His story was well documented in the Ashburton Guardian October 23, and congratulations to Sue Newman for her excellent coverage of Greg’s moving story.

We are hearing so much about this medical condition and the increasing incidence is alarming. The message from Greg is that much more research is needed and he outlined his innovative plan on how funds could be raised ers with 2 wins. In the Hefford Shield that was run recently Ashburton Ladies were the only club to win all their games in winning the shield.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club had a Bus Trip beginning at ‘The Point Station’, Windwhistle on October 18. The weather was not very encouraging early in the morning, but it became much more pleasant as the day wore on. On arrival at Windwhistle, we were met by our hostess, Teena Richards, who took the group of 26 members into the Billiards Room, and gave us the history of the Station and its surrounding woodlands garden which is increasingly expanding. We spent an amazing time meandering around the woodsland amongst the wonderful display of Rhododenrons which were at peak season, along with the bluebells, Mt Peel Lilies, to mention but a few of the varieties of under planted treasures. There were numerous ‘ROOMS’ within the large gardens which were exciting to see, even an archway with Laburnam being established, it will look beautiful in years to come. After viewing the massive area ,we were able to share the shared lunch that every member brought in the Billiards room before departing reluctantly for the last property at Hororata which was Terrace Station originally owned by Sir John Hall, who was the Premier of NZ and the minister responsible for enabling women of NZ to vote. The Station is still inhabited by his great, great grandaughter and her Husband, Kate & Richard Foster. Kate greeted us and spoke of the old established gardens which have obviously been added to over the intervening years, also the stories that went along with it. As the Historical Places Trust now administer to the maintenance of the house and its surrounds, we were able to view the nooks and crannies with information supplied of the history within the house and the outbuildings which had numerous displays. The gardens are extensive and very well established, once again garden rooms, a track to walk in and get up personal with the old Sequiua trees. Once again, bluebells were everywhere with wonderful displays with helebores, trilliums etc massed for a great show. Everywhere one looked, it was breath-taking. Kate had a plant stall too which was welcomed. Sadly it was time to leave, so our day was enjoyed by all.

A beautiful sunny long weekend saw lots of activity down at the Brandon. A fun teams stableford was played on Saturday, where teams of four had to pick the best and the worst stableford score on each hole. This brought out lots of giggles, plenty of sledging and all round frivolity. The very strong team of George Brown, Sean Strange and Ron Carlson picked up top prize with a 79 pointer. I am not sure if a three player team was a help or a hinderance, but they all had very good individual scores, so well done boys.

On Monday another strong field turned up to play for the Centennial Shield, and the ladies took advantage of their very generous 2 shot allowance to

This Saturday we have DCL round 2 and final qualifying for the RMF Cup Finals Series. Can you still make the top 30? I believe over 50 players can. Get on down and give it a go, we have some wonderful prizes on offer at the end of the Final Series thanks to Russell Moon and Fail and Matt at Sega Golf.

On Sunday we welcome our friends from around the county who are descending on the Brandon to battle for the Mayors Cup. Teams of 4 Ladies and 4 Men from all 5 local clubs will play for top Ladies team top mens and overall team. We also have the copper urns for the best individual Lady and Man. You do not have to be in one of the teams to pick up this prize, so come along and show the selectors, that they don’t know good golf when they see it, and you should have definitely been in the team.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor welcomed 13 members to our October meeting. Trevor demonstrated how to propagate plants from cuttings using peat pellets. He showed the various stages of incubation from starting them in recycled grape containers through to placing them in polystyrene trays covered with plastic. One tray of plants went on holiday to Hanmer recently so he could spray mist them twice daily. A video of Chelsea Flower Show was also shown.

MSA Golf Section MSA Golf Section hosted the South Island Women’s Tournament during Labour weekend with 56 women (28 teams) participating over the two days, with great weather conditions and the course being in great condition n as well.

The tournament ran smoothly and all that took part enjoyed themselves on and off the course.

The Tinwald Trophy for Best Combined Nett on Sunday was won by Raylene Leath-Forbes and Roma Miller from Invercargill.

Roger Letham encouraged lively bidding and a good sum of money was raised. All net proceeds for the function will be donated to Dementia Canterbury for Dementia Services in Mid Canterbury.

Nelson Suburban Trophy – combined stableford over the two days was won by Jan Willcocks and Kerrin Black from Waimea. The overall winners were Jacqui Beardsley and heather Robinson. Also over the weekend there were Nearest the Pins on both days and over the course of the weekend there was only 8 two’s. The weekend was marred on Sunday by the Oamaru tailor left at the Golf was broken into and some gear missing etc, but great thought

by Brent Smith he organised a hamper for them at prize giving.

MSA Outdoor Bowling Club A busy time on the greens as the season kicks in and tournaments become a daily event. Our green continues to play well a big thank you to Tony for his splendid work maintaining the green. We have hosted another round of half day triples which saw 3 teams with 3 wins with Brent Maysons team coming out on top followed by Bob Harrison’s team runners up and Gain Eders team 3rd.Congratulation must go two of our development players Linton Muir and Shane Calder who were chosen to represent Mid Canterbury in the recent Triangular Tournament. With both players performing well they both were selected in the Canterbury Country team to play Town on November 4 good luck. Our development team is making every road a winner in the Bowls Canterbury Interclub Competition with 2 wins from 2 games defeating Papanui Club 16 10 and Bowls Papanii 18-13.

A reminder to all club members our annual game against Richmond Club for the Loftus Cup away is Sunday November 4 we require names of players available ASAP to sort out teams and arrange transport. Championship draws have been completed with the draws on the noticeboard.

In brief Walsh up for award Tom Walsh has been recognised as one of track and field’s best male athletes. The kiwi shot putter has been shortlisted for world athlete of the year ahead of the IAAF Athletics Awards 2018, for a season that saw him win the world indoor title as well as the Diamond League and Commonwealth Games. Walsh also had the longest shot put throw since 2003. The 2017 outdoor world champion says it’s special to be recognised for the first time.

Raiders retain Tapine Canberra have secured Joseph Tapine’s services long-term, ensuring he’s not available to rival NRL clubs when the open market begins next week. The Raiders announced the 24-year-old New Zealand test second-rower signed a new four-year deal on Wednesday, keeping him at the club until at least the end of the 2023 season. Had they not acted, Tapine would have been open to approaches from other clubs from November 1.

Bowls day a cracker Methven turned on a cracker day for the Edna Low fours bowls tournament on Sunday. Sending a bowl rolling down the green at the Methven Bowling Club is Elaine Miller. Under clear blue skies it was the home team of Eric Maw, Greg Turnbull, Graham Brooker and Anthony Holmes who took the tournament out. A jockey in Australia has been stung with a six-week ban after misculating a victory in Queensland. Jockey Anthony Allen thought he had pulled off a victory on Catch Me Latar at a race meet in Beaudesert, but there was a problem – he still had a lap to go in the 2450m race. Allen had the 8-year-old gelding well placed approaching the home turn. He then peeled to the outside. The horse went on to finish last, 15 lengths behind the winner. - NZME

Members were informed about the Armistice Concert For the Fallen at the Events centre on 10th November and the Afternoon tea for the Seniors Over 90’s on Friday 30th November 2pm-4pm at the Sinclair Centre. RSVP required by November 26. The bus trip to Christchurch was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who went. Jan thanked those who had organised it.

Our mini speaker was Isla Jones who entertained us with some slides of her two month four wheel Camper van holiday in The Northern Territory of Australia. They flew into Alice Springs and set out from there.

They did two loop tracks. One to the north and one to the south covering 11347kms and using 1212litres of diesel.

They saw typical Australian outback scenery – vast expanses of flat land with hills in the distance. Lots of wildlife especially freshwater crocodiles and lots of birdlife. A highlight of the trip was a scenic flight show casing East Kimberley, Kununurra, Lake Argyle, Bungle Bungle range and the Argyle Diamond Mine. Water is continuously released from Lake Argyle into Lake Kununurra to irrigate 12.000ha of farmland.

The diamond mine, owned by Rio Tinto, is the largest producer of pink and coloured diamonds in the world, producing 20 million carats annually. Time for morning tea came too soon and Isla was thanked for her talk.

Following this our main speakers for the day were Annie and Mandy from the Cancer Society Support Services who talked to us about their roles as co-ordinators. They reminded us that Cancer is now the biggest killer in NZ

Ashburton Bridge Club In this deal North/South are most likely to finish in a contract of 2 Spades after South, as dealer, opens 1 Spade.

It is difficult for East/West to find their Heart fit, although West, with no Spades and 11 points, could not be criticised for trying a “take out” double. But when North bids 2 Spades with his 8 points, East, with just 7 points, is not likely to compete with 3 Hearts.

Should West choose to lead his Diamond A&K, East will get a Diamond ruff with one of his little Spade trumps on a 3rd round of Diamonds.

Now, what will East do? If he chooses to lead back a Heart the defence will take 2 tricks in Hearts, and hold declarer, South, to his 2 Spade bid, ie 8 tricks.

Hearts would appear to be the obvious lead from East, towards weakness on the table (dummy), but it is not attractive to lead away from a tenace holding of KJ9, especially with the Heart 10 in view in dummy.

All that aside, look what happens should West choose a Club for his with 1:3 people contracting the disease.

The big 5 areas are Research, Information Resources, Health Promotion, Fund Raising and Support Services. Run and Walk Ashburton Labour weekend was the last club get together for the season with the weather putting on a real show of sunshine.

The early birds made the most of the beautiful morning with four runners and two walkers making their way down the river track. Later, the afternoon meet was hosted at Lake Hood with members enjoying the change of scenery. A great turnout for the last meet of the season with 18 walkers and four runners. The walkers did one loop of the lake, approximately 7km and the runners 11km. Afternoon tea and a great catch up afterwards was enjoyed by all.

Ashlea Mulligan took part in the Twizel half marathon Pyramid Run at the weekend. Climbing over the pyramid saddle followed by two river crossings

before slowly descending down a 4WD track to finish at Ben Ohau Station. The Mackenzie High Country known for its stunning scenery didn’t disappoint on Saturday with a very hot day. Ashlea ran home in fifth place in a time of 1:36:45. Congratulations Ashlea.

Best of luck to those competing next weekend in Mission Mt Somers. The season will wrap up next Saturday evening with dinner at the MSA followed by prize giving.

Lions Club of Ashburton Our October meeting under President Lance Schubert featured Michael Read as our Club’s guest speaker. Michael gave a modest and informative account of his momentous achievement of reaching the summit of Mount Everest.

He is acknowledged for his prowess as an expert climber and guest speaker.

We were pleased to welcome, as our Zone Chairman, Garth Bateup our previous President. Zone 1 represents the seven Lions Clubs active in the Ashburton District. We wish him well.

On the immediate horizon are the following – Thursday October 25, our Club’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament.

Friday October 26 and Saturday October 27 sees our members carrying out gate duties at the Ashburton A&P Show.

Friday November 2 will see a group from our club attend the Night Trots at Addington.

Our November Club Meeting features as guest speaker Steve Lousich, a NZ representative power lifter. This promises to be another excellent evening.

Wednesday December 5 will combine our final meeting for the year and our Christmas function to be held at Trotts Gardens from 6pm onwards. Partners and visitors are all most welcome. The evening will include a tour of the Gardens.

Young gun firing with winners Cody Cole’s rise in the training ranks could include a Group One contender next month.

After being a successful weight-lifter whose highlight was representing New Zealand at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Cole (28) has followed in the race horse training footsteps of his father, Tony.

Cole has been turning heads with his horses and his strike rate, so much so he has been forced to up his status from a permit to train license to a public trainers’ license.

Cole started out with just a few horses, but now has 31 in work with his major client being Gary Harding, whose stable runners include Astor, Spree, Tattle and last-start placegetter O’Hara.

Cole saddled up two winners in the space of three days last week, winning at Te Aroha last Wednesday with Midnight Brawler for Mapperley Stud’s Simms Davison then at Tauranga last Friday with Shine for Gerry Harvey.

Midnight Brawler, a threeyear-old son of Burgundy, had run an encouraging debut at Ruakaka earlier this month and has been the focus of offers from bloodstock agents since his Tauranga win over the promising Standing Ovation.

“There has been quite a bit of interest in him and if he’s not

“If he goes well and bounces through that there’s the definite possibility he could go down to Riccarton for the 2000 Guineas. He’s not nominated, but we would pay the late nomination fee.

“I’ve had a lot of time for him since I got him. He’s very wellbred, being a half-brother to Infantry, the Singapore Horse of the Year.

“Nigel Tiley has a big opinion of the filly he beat at Te Aroha.

He was talking of maybe taking her over for the Queensland Winter Carnival.”

Shine, a daughter of Redwood, was most impressive at Tauranga, sprinting clear in the run home to win by seven and threequarter lengths in her 1600m assignment.

“She came to me during the winter and wanted better tracks,” Cole said.

“She ran fourth at Taupo second-up, but that was six weeks between runs and she really needed it.

“She had a good blow afterward and I knew she would go a big race at Tauranga, but I didn’t expect her to almost put eight lengths on them.

“She keeps improving, but she’s having a short break now.

She’ll be back in the stable next week.”

Cole is happy with the recent progress of Astor after undergoing a minor wind operation following her disappointing freshup run at Pukekohe last month.

“She had the operation the Tuesday after the race and has been back in work a fortnight,” Cole said.

“I’m hoping she can do an exhibition gallop between races at Pukekohe on Friday then run in a rating 72 1150m at Te Awamutu the following Wednesday.

“I want to get her to the Counties Bowl. She’s absolutely flying and looks great.”

It will be three weeks between runs for the New Zealand-bred filly who finished third in the Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), and her trainer thinks that will be a huge aid for his runner. “I think she also goes better with a bit of time between runs, she’s that sort of filly,” Price said. “I think she went super in the Thousand Guineas, I’m not saying she would have won, but certainly she should have run second. “Seabrook worked super at Caulfield on Tuesday morning and she will run in the Myer with Dean Yendall to ride.

When the 2018 New Zealand Heartland XV was named yesterday, only one Mid Canterbury rugby player’s name was there.

Rampaging flanker Seta Koroitamana was the only Mid Canterbury rugby player to have been named in the Heartland XV by coach Craig Scanlon – the first time in many years that Mid Canterbury hasn’t provided multiple players to the team.

A side selected from the teams which played in the 2018 Heartland Championship, the Heartland XV would play two games early next month (November 1 and 4) against Fiji’s Vanua XV and the New Zealand Marist XV. Both games would be played in Taupo.

It was the second year in a row Koroitamana, 23, had made the Heartland XV. Last year he was joined in the squad by Jarred Percival, Eric Duff and Maleli Sau, although a few days after the team was named Sau received a red-

card in the Lochore Cup final – which Mid Canterbury went on to win – and received a three-week suspension from New Zealand Rugby, meaning he didn’t get to take to the field for the Heartland XV. But having just the one player make the Heartland XV cut this season was possibly a fair result given Mid Canterbury’s showing in this year’s competition.

Mid Canterbury would have finished ninth and not made either the Meads Cup (top four) or Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) finals, had it not been for a points penalty handed down to West Coast for a rule breach. That moved West Coast down to ninth and Mid Canterbury up to eighth, giving the side a Lochore Cup semi-final against HorowhenuaKapiti. Mid Canterbury lost that semi-final in Levin at the weekend, 34-24.

Koroitamana was a standout throughout the campaign though, putting his body on the

line week after week, and testing some of the best defensive lineups in the competition with his strong ball carrying skills and deceptive speed.

Koroitamana would join a relatively new-look Heartland XV squad, with 16 new faces and just nine who played for the side last year, while Scanlon had stepped up to the head coach role after acting as assistant coach in 2017.

The team featured 10 players that would be taking the field in Heartland Championship finals this weekend.

“We have people right across the country watching matches and players to get to this point and it’s exciting to see the group of players we have been able to select,” Scanlon said.

“Heartland teams can vary in strength from year to year and it is great to see new players rewarded for strong seasons in their provincial colours.”

build up. “We have the best players from across the Heartland unions coming together so we know they have a high skillset and are talented players. We need to have the right balance of getting players to understand how we want to play but not over-training them on the field.”

Mid Canterbury’s worst recent season when it came to Heartland XV selections came in 2012, when Mid Canterbury received a first-class fend from that year’s Heartland XV coaches, with a poor season resulting in no players making the squad. That was the first time since 2006 Mid Canterbury had not been represented in the national side.

The following year Jon Dampney, Will Mackenzie and Dwayne Burrows made the cut, while the year after that, in 2014, a top season in which Mid Canterbury won the Meads Cup for the second year running, six players were named. They were Jon Sharpe, Andrew Smith, Gary Redmond,

In 2015 current Mid Canterbury captain Jackson Donlan made the side for the first time, along with Adaam Ross and Duff, and Donlan backed that up with his naming in the squad again in 2016 along with Sau and Nete Caucau.
