Young and old took train trips back in time at the weekend as The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum celebrated its 45th anniversary. Families and others clambered aboard the famous K88, as well as having rides on the Dubs and railcar. “It’s been a good weekend, trains have been full all morning today,” said one of the guards, Thomas Spark, yesterday. He added that about 200 people had visited throughout the open days of Sunday and Monday, riding on the trains and taking in other surrounding attrac-

tions in the Plains heritage-styled village. A service had been held in the historic church building on Sunday. “It’s a highlight for the kids as well as the parents, especially the grandparents, they have a story to tell, remembering riding on trains,” Spark said. Among those with a story to tell was guard and railcar driver Michael Ross. Trains are both his work and his hobby. He got a job as porter with the New Zealand Railways, based at the Ashburton railway station, in 1977. He swept platforms, cleaned the men’s toilets and was mainly working in the parcels office.
With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.
He did that for 12 years before restructuring saw him become a freight operator. All these years later, at the age of 63, he remains in his railways job, but his title is container transfer operator, his employer is Toll NZ, and he is based in the Ashburton railway yard. Ross remembers as a child at Tinwald living near the railway line, he would go out when a train was going past and wave a small flag. “I have always liked trains,” Ross said. He was at the Plains inaugural meeting in 1971 and has been involved ever since, today volunteering as a guard and driver.
