A local retailer is battling a rat infestation, that is forcing it to pull products from its shelves. A spokeswoman for The Warehouse has confirmed it had a rat infestation issue, but is working with the Ashburton District Council to eradicate the problem. In the interim, the spokeswoman said The Warehouse had taken proactive measures to protect its customers and staff. This involved removing some product ranges, including all human and pet food and indoor plants, from the shelves. The infestation is believed to have come after a nearby building on the old EA Networks site was demolished. This work began in January with all buildings on the two-and-a-half hectare site, bar the administration building that fronts Kermode Street and the large substation, demolished as they fell short of new building code standards.
Gordon Guthrie The majority of work was completed by March and completely finished off by May. EA Networks has a major sub-station close to The Warehouse and the compa-
ny’s operations manager Jeremy Adamson said a heavy eradication programme was maintained when it came to vermin as it had to protect its sub-stations. It installed sound-generating machinery and spread poison in its sub-stations to keep rats away. “We have an obligation to keep the power on and we don’t want a rat getting in and causing an outage,” Mr Adamson said. Rats within EA Networks’ former Kermode Street buildings, however, were few and far between. EA Networks chief executive Gordon Guthrie said he was not aware of a vermin problem at the old site. “There was the odd mouse found under the old admin building at the start of winter but that was it, nothing unusual,” Mr Guthrie said. Nearby businesses NZ Sock Company, EA Networks Centre and Cates Grain and Seed said they had not had a problem with vermin since the demolition.
