CD to test phone alert system BY SUE NEWMAN

If your cellphone issues a piercing shriek tomorrow between 6pm and 7pm and you receive a message alerting you to a civil defence emergency – don’t panic, it’s simply a test. The message is the first live, nationwide test of a new emergency mobile alert, one that will be used in the future to let people know if their life, health or property may be at risk in an emergency situation. While tomorrow’s test will be nationwide to compatible cellphones, in a real emergency alerts will only be sent to phones in the geographical area affected by the emergency. The new mobile phone alert will be an additional warning channel in emergencies and will not replace radio, television, social media or websites or the natural

warning signs of emergencies such as a tsunami. Ahead of tomorrow’s test, cellphone owners can check whether or not their device is capable of receiving the warning at www.civildefence.govt.nz. Phones

need to be on the most up-to-date operating system. The alert will look different on different phones and you can see what to expect on your phone’s screen by checking the civil de-

fence website. The message you receive should have the word TEST in it. If you receive an alert containing this word then there is nothing further you need to do. Once the nationwide test is com-

pleted, the alert system will go live and if you receive an emergency mobile alert you should take the message seriously and follow the instructions. The alerts use cell broadcast technology so there is no need to sign up or download an app. Emergency mobile alerts use a dedicated signal so they will be more reliable in an emergency when mobile phone and internet traffic could overload the network. It doesn’t matter which network you are on, any capable phone entering the targeted emergency area during the broadcast period will receive an alert. Emergency mobile alert messages can only be sent by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, Civil Defence Emergency Management groups, NZ Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Ministry of Health and Ministry for Primary Industries.

Environmental sustainability might not be words that are automatically associated with the dairy industry but they are now the by words dairy giants such as Fonterra live by says the organisation’s relationship manager James Caygill. And that sustainability drive means that the dairy giant’s future growth, anticipated to be about 2 per cent a year, will come from better farming practices rather than more dairy conversions and more cows, Caygill told Ashburton District councillors this week. The day of mass conversions had gone and so too had growth in dairy herd sizes, he said. There were various ways to minimise the inevitable impact of this growth on districts such as Ashburton, particularly on roads that would handle greater traffic volumes, Caygill said. These could include better

driving of fleet vehicles or utilising a programme currently used in Southland where Fonterra became a road monitoring agency for the council. This would see trucks kitted out with equipment that would monitor bumps and

Main markets for Fonterra are Chile, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and at home. Ashburton was the largest single producer district in the South Island with just over 300 Fonterra farmers and just under 250,000 cows producing more than 112 million kilograms of milksolids a year. “You sit between two plants at Clandeboye and Darfield so you’re vital.”

Three years after becoming the oldest person to jump out of a plane with Skydiving Kiwis, George Crack, 88, is going to give it another go. This time, however, it’s to raise money for the Cancer Society. Today at 11am George will head up into the sky above the Ashburton District as part of the Cancer Society’s Jump for Cancer. Those who signed up for the campaign had to raise a minimum of $800 for the opportunity to take part in what’s been described as the ultimate adrenaline rush, complete with stunning views, while supporting a cause close to the hearts of many Kiwis. For George, that’s definitely the case. When George’s grandson was seven he was diagnosed with cancer around his glands. He was only given a 25 per cent of surviving, but that young boy is now 29 and living in Christchurch, having survived his ordeal thanks to, among other things, developments in chemotherapy and bone marrow treatments around that time. “And at that age you don’t realise how serious things are,” George said. That same grandson still puts into Canteen and he recently gave George $300 towards his Jump for Cancer fundraising. George played down what he will do this morning. “It’s not a great effort to do what I’m doing. It will be about 25 minutes going up and six minutes coming down.” However, it turns out he has quite a history of raising funds for others. In 1971 he rode a bicycle from Cape Reinga to Bluff, raising more than $6000, quite a tidy sum in those days, for a swimming pool on Stewart Island. In doing so the then 46-yearold was the first person to ride a bike over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, as authorities had to close a lane off for him to make the trip over the Waitemata Harbour. The whole journey down country took 23 days, but it wasn’t easy going, especially early on.

“I hadn’t been on a bike for 20 years and I hadn’t done any training, so I was a bit poorish at the start.” He’s still got the bike, a Raleigh three-speed, and in the last four or five years he’s done a couple of rides on it to raise money for prostate cancer research, one from Mount Cook to Oamaru, and another from Rolleston to Hinds. The former publican, who has run hotels in places as far-flung as Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands, was also involved in efforts to raise money for a new grandstand, complete with squash courts, at the racecourse on the Chathams. George reckons he’s been lucky in life, blessed with many things, including his family, but there’s something else that might explain why he’s so keen to help other people and causes. When he was living and working on Stewart Island he and an-

he was out hunting, saw what was going on and acted quickly. “He just happened to be there and pulled me out. It was a miracle. I got 46 years of extra life.” Years he hasn’t wasted. George is extremely grateful for all those who have supported his latest fundraising effort, including his friends at the Hampstead Bowling Club. When he was at the club last Sunday afternoon, the club and bowlers chipped in with more than $350. “It was a great gift,” he said. “I got pretty emotional and couldn’t speak. Someone else had to thank them for me. “I came home and cried like a bloody big kid because of the goodness of people.” Given he’s jumped with Skydiving Kiwis before, George has a pretty good idea of what to expect when he goes up today. “I’m looking forward to it. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the dinghy became swamped, and both men ended up in the water. George said his swimming ability was restricted to little more than dog paddle, and he and his friend used a plastic container they had brought along to put their catch in, to stay afloat. But they soon lost hold of the container and staying afloat proved to be too much for the other man, who drowned. George thought the same fate awaited him and, just when he thought it was all over, the local policeman, who was off duty at the time and only in the area because

worried at all.” Like his last jump, it will be captured on video. “The expression on your face doesn’t look very good sometimes,” he said, smiling. “I remember going down last time and then all of a sudden there was an enormous jerk and I said to (his tandem skydiving companion) ‘what was that?’ “He said it was the chute opening. ‘Christ,’ I said, ‘I thought that was up long ago’.” Although unsure just how much he has raised in his latest fundraising effort, George is sure it’s well over the target of $800. However, it’s not too late for members of the public to contribute. There’s an account at NBS in Ashburton under “G Crack – Skydive” that will be open until Tuesday.

Hearing assn celebrates 60 years The Ashburton Hearing Association celebrated its 60th anniversary yesterday with a luncheon at the Senior Centre. And after more than half a century of existence, the association is still going strong – a fact that those who established it in November of 1957 as a sub-branch of the Christchurch Centre of the NZ Hard of Hearing League would be proud of. “They set three aims for the new body,” Russell Anstiss, current president, said. “To teach lip reading, to provide a full social life for their members and to help with the proper and most effective use of hearing aids. “Lip reading and body language are still important skills for today’s hearing-impaired people, but the more rudimentary nature of hearing aids back then meant provision of proper tuition in lip reading was an essential service in helping the hearing-afflicted. “For many, it was the only way to break down the barriers to communication and involvement.” Initially two tutors travelled by train from Christchurch on Thursdays. Over the next 30 years or so the numbers of tutors and students fluctuated, peaking at 150

That’s part of the reason active membership still stands at around 140. “We are reasonably financially stable and we have supportive members” Anstiss said. “Although we face challenges – of membership and governance renewal and the plethora of other hearing service providers now available – we can, I believe, look forward to the next decade with confidence.” Yesterday’s celebration coincided with the association’s usual pre-Christmas luncheon with a good group in attendance.

Croquet club to spread its wings By Sue Newman

They might not be talking dollars, but the Waireka Croquet Club is definitely talking expansion. Come the end of January, players will be off their Ashburton Domain greens and heading to Methven and Allenton for matches while contractors undertake a major project that will see existing greens refurbished and playing surfaces extended towards Grigg Street. Publicity officer Raylene Phillips said the addition of a new playing green will see the club with six full-size playing surfaces that will allow it to hold national events. Currently it has five playing greens with three lawns that overlap. The development will leave the clubhouse untouched, but player shelters will have to be lifted and relocated. The irrigation system will also be re-laid. With the growth in popularity of golf croquet, the club’s membership was growing and extra greens were needed to ensure the

needs of both association croquet and golf croquet members could be accommodated, Phillips said. The entire playing area will be lasered to ensure perfect levels and, while the new green will need to be developed, the existing lawns will just be resurfaced. The work is likely to take less than a week, but players won’t be back on home turf until September, she said. While she’s keeping the all-up cost of the work under wraps, Phillips said this will be covered by grants and from the club’s own funds. The extension of the croquet lawns fall well within the area designated for croquet, Ashburton Council open spaces manager David Askin said. While one or two smaller trees will be moved and the nearby weather station will also need to be relocated, the overall impact on the domain itself will be minimal, he said. “They approached us and we aerial mapped the contours to see how we could extend the lawns.”

Protecting district’s biodiversity A reviewed plan that seeks to protect and enhance the district’s native plant and animal species has been adopted by the Ashburton District Council’s service delivery committee. The Biodiversity Action Plan 2017-2022 sets out the objectives that council will work towards during the next five years and provides a strategic approach to protecting the district’s biodiversity. One of the main additions to the reviewed plan, which was initially adopted by council in 2011, is a push to complete ecological surveys along the district’s roadsides, said open spaces planner Bert Hofmans. “Significant steps have been taken in the last five years to investigate and enhance Ashburton’s biodiversity elements. More than $70,000 has been awarded to 26 ap-

plicants for biodiversity-related projects since 2013, and there are now two significant restoration and protection initiatives under way at Wakanui Beach and lakes Camp and Clearwater,” he said. The revised action plan was developed in collaboration with key stakeholders and looks to consolidate and build on the achievements that have been made so far, he said. The action plan’s five objectives include protecting, maintaining and restoring significant areas of biodiversity, engaging with landowners, integrating biodiversity protection principles into council policy, and celebrating local biodiversity. The Biodiversity Action Plan closely aligns with the Canterbury Region Biodiversity Strategy and the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

Mid Canterbury’s Jo Luxton grew up quickly when at the age of 13 her family went through a traumatic separation due to illness. It was just one of many challenges which have made her life an ordinary one, she says, and one that has helped guide her in her new role as a Member of Parliament. The 44-year-old, who once aspired to being a hairdresser, talks to Susan Sandys.

mazing, exciting, overwhelming, a whirlwind, and a real rollercoaster of emotions. That’s how Mid Canterbury’s Jo Luxton describes the past two months. Following General Election 2017 in September, the Hinds preschool owner became a Member of Parliament. Jo is the eldest of three daughters to Jim and Margaret Thompson and mainly grew up in Gisborne. “I had a happy upbringing,” she said as part of her moving maiden speech in Parliament this month. And she did. But it was an upbringing marred by the traumatic experience of her mother becoming ill when Jo was 13. Margaret could not keep food

down and Jo had to help care for her. Doctors could not find the source of the problem and decided that Margaret’s inability to eat was psychological, and thus sent her to a mental health hospital. This meant the girls – Jo and her 10-year-old Down Syndrome sister Theresa and her seven-year-old sister Melissa – had to be cared for elsewhere, and Jo ended up with an aunt in Rotorua. Thankfully doctors soon discovered the illness was due to a closure of the oesophagus and they were able to treat it and send Margaret home. The family was reunited. Luxton dedicated her maiden speech to her mum and became teary-eyed towards the end when she acknowledged her bravery and determination.

“I knew I would get emotional when I talked about mum and my family because I got emotional when I wrote it,” Jo said. Margaret’s health issues were to continue throughout her life, and three years ago she was diagnosed with heart failure as a result of leukaemia treatment she received in the 1990s. She was given just three months to live, but is still battling on and will be 65 next month. “She’s very, very excited to be able to get the pension,” Jo said. The family is now mostly Canterbury based. Margaret, who remarried after she and Jim separated, today lives in Christchurch, while Theresa lives in Ashburton and Jo is her legal guardian. Despite the traumatic experience of her early teens and more

challenges which followed, Jo avoids any description of her life having been tough. “I just think I have had an ordinary life,” she said. “I think everything you do experience, good or bad, makes you who you are.” And her experiences did not so much feed into her political aspirations, as give her a “huge empathy” for people. “I don’t think you can judge someone because of the situation they are in, you never know the background of that situation.” After undertaking school certificate in Gisborne, Jo decided school was not for her and left Lytton High part way through Year 12. She dreamed of being a hairdresser and worked in a local salon. But she was made redun-

dant after a year and spent some time on the dole and picking kiwifruit in Te Puke. She married first husband Jason and at the age of 20 had son Levi. He is today 24 years old, big brother to Jo’s other two children of 22-year-old Kelsey and 13-year-old Matthew. Her husband, builder Matt Luxton, has two sons, 25-year-old Oliver and 22-year-old Cameron, and the couple recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary. “We were lucky the children all got on well. I don’t think there’s ever been any tiffies between any of them,” Jo said. The family’s base is at Hinds, where Matt built their home about six years ago, next door to Jo’s Headstart Early Learning Centre which she established in 2008. Opening the business,

which is today a living wage employer, and has nine staff, represented a significant milestone for a single mum who worked her way up through early childhood, after once earning $20 cleaning a playcentre three days per week. One vivid memory from her single mum days was going into Winz and asking for a small loan so she could pay off some bills. “I thought I could pay it back at maybe $5 or $10 per week. The person I dealt with just laughed at me and said ‘What do you think we are, a bank?’ I will never ever forget that, it was hard enough going in there and asking, and then to be treated like that, it was just terrible,” she said. If going from a single mum to a business owner was a big step, going from standing as a candi-

date in Rangitata to becoming a Member of Parliament was huge. Jo admits that when first anticipating the political journey she would be taking, she had not really thought this would be the outcome. Achieving a high placing on Labour’s list may have been the first inkling, but it was not until she received a congratulatory text from senior whip Kris Faafoi as her election night party was coming to a close, that she really believed it. The text resulted in an excited reception, first from Jo as she jumped up and yelled excitedly, then from her family and friends still remaining at the party, who cheered and clapped. “To be in Parliament, it’s a huge privilege, I’m really happy with the outcome,” she said.

Getting there has not been without its moments. She recalled the unpopularity of Labour’s proposed water levy resulting in personal abuse being hurled at her in the street during the campaign period. While she lost to National candidate Andrew Falloon in winning the Rangitata electorate, she is a List MP, and her goal is to “watch and listen and learn as much as I can”. She has not given any thought to further political aspirations at this stage, although is pleased party administrators have approved her request to open an electorate office. They have deemed this will be in Timaru and Jo is currently looking for office space. On election night she was pleased with having dramatically reduced National’s candidate

majority in the electorate and said she was determined to win the electorate next time around. Today she still thinks this is possible, and will be aiming to do this, but her main goal will be continuing to increase the party vote. Jo has her own office in Bowen House and flies out of Timaru Airport to Wellington each Monday night during Parliament’s sitting weeks. She was living out of a suitcase to start with but now rents a place in the capital. Parliament sits 8.30am to 10pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 8.30am to 6pm on Thursdays, and Jo returns to her Mid Canterbury home on a Thursday night. She has yet to meet Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, but has had a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Jacinda

Adern. One of the aims of the meeting was to gain an understanding of select committee interests. Jo has since been put on the Education and Workforce Select Committee, chaired by National’s Sarah Dowie, and the Primary Production Select Committee, of which she is deputy chairwoman. The Primary Production Select Committee is chaired by National’s David Bennett. Of all the Parliamentary duties Jo has now, she is most looking forward to her select committee work. After all, politics is about making a difference and this will be where politicians from parties across Parliament put their mind to many of the country’s pressing issues. “It’s working collegially, it’s the real nuts and bolts of stuff,” she

Dementia is one of New Zealand’s most significant healthcare challenges, touching the lives of two out of three people in the country and so prevalent the number of people living with the illness is projected to triple by 2050. Yet it remains a little understood condition, more than 30 decades after the region’s leading support body was established. Dementia Canterbury rebranded last November from Alzheimers Canterbury, a move designed in part to reflect the diversity of illnesses that fall under the dementia umbrella. Alzheimer’s accounts for 50-80 per cent of dementia cases but is only one of more than 70 different illnesses covered by the term. Common to them are difficulties with memory, reasoning, communication, perception and judgement. While there is no cure for dementia, there is much that can be done to help people with the condition live enjoyable, fulfilling lives within the community, and it is this focus on

Spectacular Israel – I will be back Flight Centre Ashburton’s Lucy Sewell has recently returned from the trip of a lifetime to Israel. She packed a lot into her trip from the bustling cities to the desert, from the Dead Sea to the Masada and everything in between. Lucy was amazed at how many significant sites were packed in to such a small country. Here is what she had to say about her time in Israel: Travelling from Tel Aviv the capital city, I jumped on an Intrepid trip with seven other like-minded travellers to head up to Jerusalem, the religious mecca of the world. Jerusalem has so many historical and religious sites so the easiest way to get around is to take a walking tour with a guide. On our walking tour we visited places like The Mount of Olives, Via Dolorosa where Jesus carried his cross, Church of Holy

Sepulchre, the Western Wall, Tower of David and also the Church of All Nations. Of course, as incredible of a destination as this city is, there’s more to Israel than Jerusalem. Once we ventured out into the country, we found ourselves heading up to an ancient, fortified Masada by gondola. Built by Herod the Great it is high above the Judean desert, situated on a mountain. later we were as low as you can possibly go, floating in the Dead Sea. Just bobbing around without any effort, covering ourselves with its salty therapeutic mud and enjoying the views of the mountains all around us was something I will never forget! After Jerusalem, we travelled to Nazareth via the Sea of Galilee to try some local fish before heading back to the beach city of Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv, I believe, is the Israeli version of Hawaii but has a totally different culture

attached. Highlights for me were shopping at a huge local market and heading down to the beach to have early morning swims in the Mediterranean Sea. This trip was particularly good because it was an Intrepid tour with a local driver and very knowledgeable guide. We would tell them we are hungry so they would make some calls and off we would go down back alleys away from the tourist traps to eat authentic Israeli food. I truly

believe a tour is the right way to go if you want to make the most of your time in this amazing country. Unlike what is shown on the TV I felt very safe. I found the people extremely friendly, the culture and history unlike any other, and obviously a special mention has to go to the food, especially the hummus – that was outstanding! ander (or parsley/basil) To serve Hummus Pita breads, wraps or flatbreads Fresh salad (eg tomatoes, lettuce, red onion etc) ■■ Meatballs: Place all the meatball ingredients in a large bowl with some cracked pepper. Using clean hands, mix until well combined. Roll into walnutsized balls.

■■ Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the meatballs, cook for a couple of minutes then turn gently using tongs, being careful not to break them up. Cook for another 7-10 minutes, turning to brown all over until cooked through. Transfer to a warmed plate, cover with foil and repeat with the remaining meatballs. ■■ Yoghurt sauce: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix to combine. Taste and season as required. ■■ To serve: Spread some hummus on a pre-warmed wrap, pita or flatbread. Top with meatballs, salad, the yoghurt sauce and the feta and olive crush if using. Manus refugees threatened Papua New Guinea police appear to have used long metal batons to beat refugees and asylum seekers in the Manus Island detention centre, as authorities seek to clear the camp. Video footage has been released showing local police hitting and threatening refugees. It is understood police and immigration officials arrived early morning as part of an ongoing operation to move the remaining men at the nowclosed facility. Witnesses said more than 100 men out of the 300 remaining left on buses yesterday morning. PNG police chief Gari Baki has told the ABC the relocations were being done “peacefully and without the use of force”. “We are doing the best we can and the refugees cannot continue to be stubborn and defiant.”

closed on October 31 but the men say the new facilities are unsafe and lack proper health services. Police have seized food, water and personal items as they seek to pressure the men to leave. The UN High Commission for Refugees has received reports of force being used to remove the refugees and asylum seekers, and called for calm. “We urge both governments to engage in constructive dialogue, to de-escalate the tensions and work on urgent lasting solutions to their plight,” the UNHCR said in a statement, noting it lacked full access to the centre. Austrlaian immigration inister Peter Dutton said it was important the men left the centre and entered the “much better accommodation” as quickly as possible. – AAP

Carrey beats depression Jim Carrey has overcome depression, after years of struggling with the mental disorder. The 55-year-old actor previously revealed that he was battling depression at the height of his fame, when he starred in movies such as The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. But in a new interview with Britain’s i newspaper, Jim has revealed that he has now largely beaten the dark cloud that once consumed him. “At this point, I don’t have depression. There is not an experience of depression,” he explained. “I had that for years, but now, when the rain comes, it rains, but it doesn’t stay.”

Argentinian navy Human trafficking confirms ‘all dead’

victims freed Nearly 500 victims of human trafficking have been freed and 40 suspects arrested in an Interpol operation involving raids across Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal. Two hundred and thirtysix children were among those rescued, a statement released by the international policing body said. The 40 suspected traffickers will now face prosecution for offences including human trafficking, forced labour and child exploitation, the statement added. The raids were part of Operation Epervier, which was

carried out under the aegis of a project targeting human trafficking gangs across Africa’s Sahel region. The initiative is funded by the German Foreign Office. The Interpol statement named one example of a 16-year-old girl who was promised work in Mali but then forced into prostitution to pay for her travel costs. The UN-affiliated International Office for Migration and several non-governmental organisations assisted the operation and provided counselling to those who had been rescued. – DPA

Families of crew lost in the San Juan submarine have been told their loved ones “are all dead” after an explosion on the day the vessel disappeared, according to reports. Family members claimed they had already received phone calls from Navy officials telling them the entire crew had perished in a blast, believed to have taken place between 180m and 900m below the surface. Officially, Argentina’s Navy is refusing to speculate on the fate of the sub’s 44 crew members and have vowed to continue the search for the stricken vessel, according to sources. And they have angrily accused the Argentinian Navy of a cover-up after it was yes-

terday forced to confirm there had been a violent explosion where the vessel would have been just hours after its last transmission. The noise “consistent with an explosion” was recorded by two international agencies last week. Luiz Tagliapietro, father one of the men who was on the submarine, claimed a navy official phoned him to break the news that his son was dead. Asked if the 43 men and one woman on board had died, he said: “Yes, yes, yes, yes. One hundred per cent. My son’s boss confirmed that they are all dead. “There’s no human being who survives that.” – NZME

Lorde wins best album Lorde’s Melodrama has been named the best album of 2017 by music magazine NME. The long-running British mag said it was a “regret-drenched break-up album that waves a magic wand at pain and transforms it into pure pop magic. he world needs more people like George Crack. Generous to a fault and not afraid to put himself out there to earn a dollar or two in the name of charity. In short, he’s genuine, top, quintessential Kiwi type of bloke. If you haven’t caught up with George’s latest fundraising drive, you’ll find out all about it, and everything else he’s achieved in his 88 years, on page 3 in today’s Guardian. A few years after becoming the eldest person to jump out of an aeroplane with the local Skydiving Kiwis, George is heading back up again this morning to raise funds as part of the Cancer Society’s Jump for Cancer. This comes after a lifetime of giving back from a man who has certainly packed a fair amount into his life – including the small matter of biking from one end of the country to the other in 1971. That would have been no mean feat back then. There was no cycle trail to aid the process and as the first person to bike across the Auckland Harbour Bridge, our George holds a little slice of national history. There are special people like George littered throughout society, but they really are a scarcity. To want to be so giving and charitable takes a huge heart and for them to be willing to put others’ needs before their own. It’s a little easier when you’re younger, but at 88 George really should have other people looking out for and helping him as opposed to being the one doing such good things. It can be easy to sit back and praise someone for doing something so generous, but the real proof is in the pudding when one’s actions can inspire someone else to do something good. I know, having now read George’s tale, I’ll be popping along to NBS before Tuesday and making a donation and I’d urge anyone who can do, to do the same. George’s story is quite incredible. And moving. If you haven’t had the chance to read it yet, make sure you do. You’ll feel pretty good about life after you have.

Appealing female MPs

t is the dawn of the age of the young, the articulate and the telegenically-appealing female MP. Yes folks; I bring you good news. Described above is the new political scene we can now sit back and appreciate, courtesy of trailblazer and – remarkably – instant prime minister, Jacinda herself. Single-handedly, effortlessly and, above all, gracefully, she has brought us a new and exciting brand of politics where the undoubted power and presence of the female voice will be heard and appreciated in the Beehive – and well beyond – in a modern manner, rarely, if ever, heard or seen before. She has, in those immortal words, broken the mould. She has, too, opened the way for others of her ilk, intelligence and looks to be admired and listened to as never before. It is a flowering of the parliamentary woman in all her glory and appeal which will become the revelation and inspiration for the politics of the future. No longer the fusty old men of governments past – or even young ones on their way up – it is to the appealing young woman to whom we shall now turn for common sense and clarity. She was expressing, with rare conviction and feeling, her abhorrence of the endless carnage on our roads and what she was going to do – from that moment on – to put an end to it. Her eloquence was impressive and, in addition, from the glint in her eye, I was left in no doubt that she meant every word she said as well as business overall. Though she is hardly the first minister of transport – associate or full-blown – to address this distressing issue, I detected an urgency in what she said frequently lacking in her male predecessors. I retired for the night feeling we might all be a bit safer on the roads now Genter is in charge. But that is not all. Both the new, tenuouslyconnected government and the major parliamentary block that was done in by the vagaries of MMP – National – have their own potential and budding leading women, some of whom have already made an impression; National’s Amy Adams and Nikki Kaye, for example.

Do you always love God with all of your being and do you always love your neighbour as yourself? Note the always. You don’t have to have great intelligence for this exam. You don’t need to have great fitness or good health. Special skills or technology are not a requirement. The bad news is that you are graded from the moment of birth. So, even if you decided at some point to be perfect from this point on until the day you die, you still have the problem of the past. Perfection is the required standard.

Korea, too secret to be discussed publicly. No doubt though, back home his lawyers are busy on the case of “Who leaked the details of Winston’s overblown pension”. That case is likely to become as legendary as Winston’s Wine Box of many years ago. I also note the colossal expense of flying Auckland City councillors to far-flung junkets in every corner of the world by business – or better – class as well as the $126,000,000 proposed extension to one of the Auckland wharves to accommodate the sailing boats of very rich men who wish to race them under the guise of the America’s Cup in 2020. I wonder what the homeless, real or fake, think about that. Not only in avoiding doing what you shouldn’t, but also in doing all that should. It’s a tough exam. Only one person in the history of the whole human race has ever passed this exam. The good news is that God has also provided a guaranteed way of getting not just a pass but a top grade – an excellent! The one man who got a perfect grade (Jesus) came as a representative for all who believe in Him. That’s right – if you have faith in Jesus Christ, his good marks get credited to your account. Not because you deserve it, but because God is gracious. No room for complaining then about how hard the marking is, when a top mark is available for those who want it. You do however; need to be serious about committing yourself to Jesus as your representative. That is a lifestyle change. It involves serving Him – not yourself. Think about the ultimate exam,

the exam of life. How will you be graded? What will be the consequences? Remember the good news – you don’t have to rely on your own failing efforts, you can apply to have Jesus Christ’s perfect score allocated to your account. It isn’t a complicated application, just a serious one. Turn away from sin and yourself and put your trust in Jesus - and Him alone. Then, as your representative, all His achievements are credited to you. His promise is that He came so that all who believed in Him would have abundant life. This in turn sparks off the debate about assessment. Important as they may be at the time, many exams and their results have a limited shelf life. Survival of the most savvy retailers Only the fittest and most savvy retailers will survive the digital era and Warehouse Group is accelerating its transformation plan, chairwoman Joan Withers and chief executive Nick Grayston said in notes for the annual meeting in Auckland yesterday. Warehouse’s share price has fallen around 30 per cent since the annual meeting a year ago, a serious concern, Withers said. The stock last traded at $2.04 versus around $3 at the prior AGM. “Globally, retailers are besieged and only those who are the fittest and who have made the changes needed to compete for today’s customers are successful,” she said. Against a backdrop where over $2 billion was wiped off the value of ASX listed retailers in the month following the announcement of Amazon’s arrival in Australia, both the board and management team recognised that business as usual or incremental change is not an option, she said. Kiwi households spending $4.1b more than they earn Kiwi households spent $4.1 billion more than they earned last financial year, despite employees taking home bigger pay packets. It was the third financial year in a row that New Zealand households racked up billions of dollars in debt, Stats NZ said yesterday. A year earlier in March 2016,

total savings in Kiwi households – the difference between household income and spending – was also minus $1.8b. The last time New Zealand households saved more than they spent was in 2013, with household savings reaching a peak of $3b in 2012.

The hit to savings comes on the back of Kiwi households spending $152.1b in the March 2017 financial year, or $8.5b more than a year earlier. This was despite total employee salaries in New Zealand growing by $5b to $114b last financial year. - NZME

Inland Revenue has struggled to make its direct debit terms and conditions a less taxing read, earning it the people’s choice worst ‘brainstrain’ award at the annual Plain English Awards. The people’s choice is awarded to the best and worst plain English communicators as nominated by members of the public and IRD was said to be the only one that truly qualified as a ‘Brainstrain’, the judges say. “IRD says they have improved their website and made it easier to do business. But when you choose to pay by direct debit and two days later this nonsense is emailed to you ... they could do better,” the nominator said. The Plain English awards were developed to address the frustrations of wading through legal speak or dissecting business jargon in business or government

The not-for-profit company Utilities Dispute took the top prize for best organisation supreme award. All eyes will be on Methven this weekend as they look to wrap up the first round of the senior interclub tennis competition undefeated. The side has conquered in all its matchups so far, and Hampstead will have the task of stopping them reaching that mark. Methven have been driven forward by the impressive performances of Koji Kawamata, who extended his unbeaten streak last week, and will surely have a personal goal to finish this round without a loss. Hampstead themselves will not be short of any confidence, having swept Fairton 6-0 last week. Jade Brosnahan has been a rock for the team in singles matches, winning all of her games. Aidan Mitchell and Pete Kirwan look to be quite the doubles pairing, winning 6-0 and 6-0. Probably to the surprise of some, Allenton have struggled so far this season and had that compounded by losing to previously winless Tinwald. It is likely they will be up against the wall this weekend again when they take on Southern, who gave Methven a very good run for their money last week. Jason Feutz and Luke Glendining nearly overturned the impressive Kawamata and Sam Bubb in the doubles. With Feutz able to defeat Bubb in the singles, he will be a valuable part of Southern lineup. In the third and final match of the day, Fairton will play Tinwald. Fairton will likely be stinging after the previous roundâ€™s result, and with the likes of Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard gunning to get their team back in the winning column. The changing faces of the All Blacks Anyone peeking into the future in the week of the first test against the British & Irish Lions, couldn’t have imagined the All Blacks starting lineup would be looking the way it is for the last game of the year. For the record, there are only three forwards starting in Cardiff – Codie Taylor, Sam Whitelock and Sam Cane – who played at Eden Park on June 24 and five backs – Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Sonny Bill Williams, Ryan Crotty and Rieko Ioane. But as significant as the statistic of more than half the team being different is, it doesn’t alone portray how much the team this week has strayed from all expectations. Neither Kane Hames nor Nepo Laulala were even in the squad to play the Lions and the former in particular barely had any kind of public recognition. Patrick Tuipulotu, who starts at lock in Cardiff, hadn’t been able to make the Blues team for much of Super Rugby and had in fact been dropped out of the squad to play the Lions because he failed to notify anyone he was running late for training. In June Tuipulotu felt a long, long way from being anywhere near the All Blacks in 2017. His confidence was low, his form patchy and he was heading entirely in the wrong direction. Luke Whitelock, who will win his second cap this weekend, wasn’t nose-diving like Tuipulotu, but he was probably just as far away from a test call up. He’s been a quiet achiever with the Highlanders in the last two years and one of the game’s big improvers, but it has taken a long list of injuries and defections to bring him the No 8 jersey. The miraculous recovery of Rieko Ioane has denied Seta Tamanivalu his first appearance on the wing and that, if it had happened, would have been another almost unimaginable scenario back in June. And the final surprise that would have been difficult to foresee is the captaincy being held by Sam Whitelock. He is a deserving and capable candidate, but he is in the job because Read has been ruled out,

Ben Smith isn’t here and Sam Cane has been overlooked on the basis he may not play the full 80 minutes. It has been a tumultuous five months for the All Blacks in respect of injury and unavailability. At no time in the last five or six years have they ended a season with a team deemed to be their strongest that is so different to the one with which they started. As a comparison, in 2016 nine of the team that started the first test against Wales, started the last

test against France. There were, though, 14 of the match day 23 involved in both games, with Aaron Smith and Aaron Cruden starting in June before swapping with TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett who were on the bench in June and started in November. The only things that would have been hard to foresee looking ahead from June last year were the sudden emergence of Anton Lienert-Brown, who was nowhere near the All Blacks in the series

against Wales but started against France, and the fast-tracking of Ioane who won his second cap off the bench in Paris having begun the year as a unknown 19-yearold at the Blues. It may well have been an unprecedented year of change for the All Blacks and even the coaches may feel they have been taken into selection territory for this last game that has surprised them. But coach Steve Hansen was adamant that all he and the man-

agement team can do is play the hand they have been dealt and have faith it is good enough. “There is not much we can do about it,” said Hansen. “We have just got to look at the positives of it and they are that a lot of people who wouldn’t normally be getting opportunities are getting them and in the long run that will be good for us. “And you know this is a team that we have a lot of faith in him so they have just got to go out and do the job.”

ABs missing fear factor, says Gatland Warren Gatland has put his miserable record against the All Blacks to one side and declared the world champions have lost their fear factor in Wales. Welsh coach Gatland believes his players are ignoring their disastrous record against New Zealand heading into Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. Boosted by the drawn series result achieved by his British and Irish Lions in New Zealand this year, Gatland reckons his players believe they can topple the tourists and end their 64-year drought.

“We have got a group of players in the squad, some of them have had success, obviously in a different (Lions) jersey,” he said. “I think in the past, and rightly so, the All Blacks, having been the best team in the world consistently, you kind of have almost that fear factor about playing them. “The fact that some of these players have played them on a regular basis, it is not that sort of trepidation, I suppose, in terms of familiarity.” Wales have gone 29 Tests since 1953 without beating the All

Blacks. The last 10 have come during Gatland’s decade in charge. Not only that, Wales under their Kiwi mentor side have lost 33 of 36 combined Tests against southern hemisphere giants New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Despite being weakened by numerous injuries and unavailabilities, the All Blacks will be as tough as ever to topple, Gatland predicts. He revealed he had chatted with All Blacks counterpart Steve Hansen at a function on Wednesday night and it became apparent how

heavy the tourists’ injury toll had become. “They are still the best team in the world. They could put out a fourth, fifth, sixth-strength team and still beat most teams because of the quality of players that they have,” Gatland said. “They are obviously probably missing seven or eight of their regular starters from 12 months ago, but in saying that, it is an opportunity they get to develop some depth, and we are going through the same process.” - NZN

Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has been named in the New Zealand team to compete at next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. 39-year-old Hubbard, who will compete in the 90-kilogram class, will be the first transgender athlete to represent New Zealand at a Commonwealth Games. She became the first transgender athlete to win an international weightlifting title for New Zealand at the Australian Open this year, lifting 123 kilos in the snatch and 145 kilos in the clean and jerk. Her win was contentious among rivals who said an athlete who had previously competed as a man had an unfair advantage. As Gavin Hubbard, she was a New Zealand junior recordholder in the 105-kilo class and has had to meet strict criteria around testosterone levels to compete as a woman. – NZME

Last week saw three teams hit 200 runs, with both teams who opened the batting able to defend their totals. Lauriston were the most impressive team in victory last week, restricting the Methven side to only 70 runs after

posting 225 runs themselves. The Lauriston bowlers seem to have hit their stride, and have been very economical so far this season, only 121 runs in two games. This will be tested this weekend, however, when Allenton make the short trip up the road to play in Lauriston. With only two games played, Allenton sit top of the runs scored

Wallabies to unleash Tongan Thor Michael Cheika will unleash Tongan Thor Taniela Tupou on Scotland, just a week after the powerhouse prop completed his three-year Wallabies qualification period. The 130kg 21-year-old Queensland Reds bookend was named on the bench by Cheika for the Murrayfield clash after jetting in to the UK last week. Three years ago Tonga-born Tupou hit the headlines when videos emerged of him scoring long-range tries for Auckland’s Sacred Heart College. However, he opted to pursue a career in Australia and signed for the Reds rather than a New Zealand Super Rugby franchise. Tupou admitted he broke down in tears after learning of his selection yesterday and said wearing the Wallabies jersey was a dream come true. “I’m lost for words, I actually don’t know what to say,” Tupou said. “I was in tears actually. The first thing that came to my mind was my family.

“Growing up in Tonga as a young kid, all I wanted to do was to play for Australia one day and now I can do that this weekend. “I just wish my family was here. I know my team will have my back, so can’t wait.” New Zealand were keen to have Tupou in their national schoolboys team side. Canterbury batsman Ken McClure will take time out from representative cricket after pleading guilty to a charge of injuring with reckless disregard. McClure, 23, pleaded guilty to assaulting a man in Hanmer Springs on September 10 and has been remanded for sentencing until January 19. The charge of injuring with reckless disregard carries a maximum penalty of five years’ jail. McClure has made himself temporarily unavailable for representative cricket, requesting that he be allowed to take time out of the game to reflect on his circumstances and to undergo counselling. – NZME

Fittler Origin coach Brad Fittler has been appointed NSW coach, with the former captain taking the reins after a three-month search for Laurie Daley’s successor. Starc wounded briefly Mitchell Starc has avoided serious damage after a fielding mishap on day two of the Ashes opener, with the spearhead returning to the Gabba shortly after cutting his leg. Starc and Shaun Marsh were both hunting down a ball in the deep on yesterday, when the sliding spearhead managed to cut his left leg with the spikes on his right boot. The left-armer trudged off the oval and dashed into the rooms for treatment but emerged two overs later to field. – AAP

As the weather warms up around the country, so does the grass track harness racing action and if today’s Geraldine Trotting Club meeting at Orari is anything to go by, then it’s going to be an intriguing summer. With more than 200 nominations for the first of their two race days in the season, the Geraldine club was never going to struggle for quality fields. But above all else, their flagship event, the $25,000 Geraldine Cup, is a mouth-watering contest. Featuring so many of the rising stars of the Canterbury pacing ranks, the 2850-metre event will set the tone for the coming weeks with a plethora of grass track action ahead. Headed up by Seel The Deal, who tackled the New Zealand Trotting Cup and New Zealand Free-For-All last week, the field is littered with potential winners from the top of the book to the bottom. The most notable entrant, however, is Cran Dalgety’s Raukapuka Ruler. Last season’s Northern Derby winner will begin his four-yearold season in the event, looking to pick up where he left off at the end of last term. And Dalgety is sure he’s better than ever. “He’s come back in fantastic nick, he has really broadened out in the shoulders and looks like a bull. “He’s pretty ready for this week, I wouldn’t expect him to be too far off the mark.” Other serious contenders who are in good-nick include Mickey Gee, James Dean and Mongolian Hero. A win for Mickey Gee would mark a special result for driver, Sam Ottley who hails from just over the fence of the racecourse. Her mother, Denise Ottleyn has a runner in the race as well in Tuapeka Cup winner, Rocki Warrior.

New addition Hastings trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen will unleash another string to their bow at Awapuni today. Lowry and Cullen have already made it a season to remember with the win of Wait A Sec in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2400m) on their home track and they have produced some promising younger horses working through the grades, while coming up nicely is their dual Group One placegetter Savvy Dreams. Adding to their string is a newcomer to the stable, Saint Kitt, who will resume in the Wai Pine Limited/ John Turkington Forestry Bulls Country Cup (1500m) today. Formerly owned and trained by Kelly Burne, Saint Kitt has been leased by Cullen and his partner, Nikki Lourie, and goes into this weekend’s assignment fresh-up, having not raced since finishing unplaced last May.

The free-wheeling pacer will be driven today by Gerard O’Reilly. Former top three-year-old filly of last season, Seaswift Joy will also contest the race with Johnny Morrison handling the driving duties on the Malcolm Shinntrained mare. He was in the bike at Addington last week where they ran a fast-finishing seventh behind Bonnie Joan. “The draw didn’t help us at all, we got too far back and never really got into it. “She found the line great though and I’m sure if she had been closer she wouldn’t have been right up there at the finish. “The grass track should suit her, she’s raced well on them in the past.”

Simogramor to keep winning roll going If promising filly Simogramor follows the family pattern she will win the Wentwood Grange Juvenile (1000m) at Te Rapa tomorrow. The Fastnet Rock two-year-old is a daughter of the top racemare Katie Lee and she has already shown some of her mother’s ability, being a trials winner before finishing a solid second in her debut behind the smart Espumoso at Te Rapa earlier this month. Katie Lee was also runner-up in her debut and went on to notch her first win in her second start and that was also on the Te Rapa course. And for good measure, Katie Lee’s second foal, Legramor, also found Te Rapa a happy hunting ground in her second start and, like both Katie Lee and Simogramor, she had been runner-up

on debut. Simogramor is also eligible for the Karaka Million, but won’t be rushed to be on hand for the $1 million feature at Ellerslie on January 27. “I’m not going to push her. I’ll let her tell me what she wants to do,” co-trainer Debbie Rogerson said. “I’d like to see her get out of maidens then freshen her. She’s a nice two-year-old.” Rogerson says Simogramor has some of her mother’s traits, particularly her dislike for wet ground. “She likes good ground, just like Katie Lee did,” she said. “She got wet tracks for her first two trials and didn’t like it. But when she struck a good track in her next trial, she won well.”

In her debut at Te Rapa, Simogramor showed speed to lead and fought back well when headed by Espumoso, who had also won his debut, at Te Aroha. “He was over-used and the other horse (Espumoso) was hard and fit and ready,” Rogerson said. “When you look at the time and sectionals he ran it was a very good run. And the winner is a pretty smart horse.” It’s no surprise that Rogerson is taking extra interest in Simogramor and her older half-sister Legramor. “Katie Lee was special to me,” she said. “She had some tough races and never stopped trying.” Katie Lee won eight races and seven of them were black-type with the obvious highlight being

Change of headgear Royal Success will have a change of headgear when he attempts to regain winning form at Te Rapa next start. The Savabeel five-yearold was tried in blinkers for the first time when he won narrowly at Rotorua last month and again wore the headgear when going down a head to Natuzzi at Tauranga last Saturday. “He got to the front at Tauranga then the winner ran past him and he came back and had another crack. He didn’t see the other horse until he was headed by him,” co-trainer Stephen Autridge said. “We’re taking the blinkers off and putting a vizor on. “Apart from that, he’s going well. He’ll start next in the Listed Swap (Contractors) Sprint at Te Rapa on Waikato Cup day.”

Tomic must battle open wildcard playoff Bernard Tomic will have to fight for an Australian Open wildcard, with Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt saying he needs to see more from the tennis bad boy. Injury-plagued Thanasi Kokkinakis was this week awarded a discretionary wildcard but Tomic won’t be given the same guaranteed start. Plummeting to 143 from a career high world No.17 in 2016, Tomic has been invited to compete in a 16-man field in the wildcard playoff in Melbourne in December, although is yet to accept the invitation. Hewitt said Tomic was unsure of his plans for the summer when he spoke to him a few weeks ago, although his management said would enter into qualifying for Brisbane and the Open. “He’s had a tough year and he needs matches and he’s got to put himself out there on the line to have a crack at making the Open,” said Hewitt,speaking at the launch of Smash MND, which is a pre-Open Jimmy Barnes concert to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease. “We all know the kind of tennis he can play but he has to get back to that level and he also needs to commit to the sport as well and we won’t be making any more wildcard decisions until we see what happens in the playoffs.” Hewitt said Tomic playing a Challenger event, which was a second-round loss in Slovakia, in his last tournament of the year was a step in the right direction for the 25-year-old. Tomic has progressed to the fourth round three times at Melbourne Park and suffered a third-round loss this year.

Hewitt said the Australian Open men’s title was wide open, with some of the regular contenders such as veterans Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray sidelined for much of the year through injury. Hewitt said he’d been impressed by Australia’s No.1 Nick Kyrgios through the Davis Cup campaign and felt he’d matured. “Coming in a lot of the top guys from the previous years are going to be seeded a lot lower because they haven’t played really for the last six months so there’s going to be a question mark on how they come in and how their bodies are holding up,” Hewitt said. “(Roger) Federer is going to go in as favourite as age 36 but there’s going to some opportunities for some young guys to stand up and maybe win a grand slam.” – AAP

Parker accused of degrading title Boxing superstar Anthony Joshua has accused the camp of Kiwi counterpart Joseph Parker of degrading the WBO heavyweight title, as they attempt to engineer a 2018 fight with the British heavyweight. Parker and promoter David Higgins laid out their final negotiating position on Wednesday in Auckland, asking for 35 per cent of the bout’s net profits. If their demands are not met, they’ll give up on claiming Joshua’s scalp and pursue a trans-Tasman bout with Australian Lucas Browne in the new year. Parker’s camp also suggested the 28-year-old Joshua – the unbeaten IBF and WBA champion – has a glass jaw, in stark

contrast to their own fighter. On vacation in Dubai, Joshua hit back, saying he’d have no trouble knocking out Parker, who has underwhelmed in his two WBO defences. The 25-year-old Parker has required points to down both Romanian Razvan Cojanu and Briton Hughie Fury, having won the WBO belt in December 2016. Joshua felt the Aucklander was degrading his belt with his antics. “Does he want publicity? Is it a PR stunt?” Joshua told British media. “What’s so difficult about fighting this little kid who’s doing press conferences? It’s very unprofessional of them – the heavyweight

championship is such a respected title to have, but stuff like that takes away from the creme-de-la -creme of the title. “They need to put their egos aside and stop doing silly things.” Hearn, meanwhile, told Sky Sports UK he’d watched Higgins’ slightly disorganised press conference, but still wouldn’t agree to a 35 per cent cut. But he agreed Parker deserved more than 25 per cent. Higgins considered that progress, having been initially offered a lowball 20 per cent by Joshua’s camp, but wouldn’t accept less than 35 per cent. Peru’s world cup spot in doubt Peru’s spot at the Fifa World Cup could be in jeopardy following reports of the Peruvian government planning to take control of the football association. The South American country booked the final place in the 2018 Fifa World Cup after beating the All Whites 2-0 in a playoff series last week. However, there is a slim chance the likes of New Zealand, Italy or Chile could replace Peru at the tournament. According to Libero, Congresswoman Paloma Noceda wants the Institute of Sport to control the Peru football association. FIFA has a very strong stance

on governments taking control of football associations and could go as far as the extreme approach and exclude Peru from the World Cup in Russia. It would then be up to Fifa to decide on which country they invite to the tournament. “If any association withdraws or is excluded from the competition, the FIFA Organising Committee shall decide on the matter at its sole discretion and take whatever action is deemed necessary,” read the Fifa regulations. “The FIFA Organising Committee may in particular decide to replace the association in question with another association.”

If Fifa went on rankings then Chile would get the nod, currently ranked 10th in the latest World rankings. Chile finished sixth in South American qualifying, behind Peru on goal difference. Italy, ranked 14th in the latest, were knocked out in the UEFA qualifying playoffs by Sweden, however Fifa regulations state only 13 European teams can play at a World Cup. USA could also be in the mix if it was a financial decision by Fifa. The All Whites could claim they would be the fairest decision since they were knocked out by Peru. -NZME
