Silver Fern Farms has been found to have acted unlawfully during a staff restructure at its Fairton Meatworks plant.

The Meatworkers’ Union complained to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) following concerns that the restructure in 2015 was not genuine and that the meat processing co-operative used it as a rationale for reducing wages.

The complaint was the subject of an ERA hearing in March this year.

In its ruling the ERA said there were 14 staff working in the animal assembly department at the plant, who rotated

through various roles prior to the restructure.

The assembly department unloaded, washed and tallied stock before driving them into pens for processing.

The ERA found Silver Fern Farms had acted on concerns about the operating costs within the department and proposed the restructure on this basis.

The change meant the lower-paid labourers in the department were able to be rostered on more frequently than higher paid shepherds.

the actual job and the skills required remained the same.

The ERA accepted the union’s submission and concluded that the restructure was flawed and Silver Fern Farms had acted unlawfully.

Van Keulen said that the company failed to meet its obligations to adequately consult with the union.

“I am satisfied that Silver Fern Farms’ actions do amount to a breach of the duty of good faith,” Van Keulen said.

Fonterra lifts farmgate forecast

News that Fonterra has lifted its farmgate forecast for the current year to $6.15 per kilogram of milksolids is welcome news to Mid Canterbury dairy farmers.

It is also good news for the district’s economy which is set to benefit by millions of dollars.

The dairy co-operative also confirmed its forecast earnings per share range of 45 to 55 cents for the year ending May 30 and continues to target a full year dividend of 40 cents per share. This means fully shared-up farmers will receive $6.55kg this year.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson, Nathan Currie, hopes the milk price will settle around the $6.50 mark to discourage European dairy farmers from ramping up production, flooding the market and setting the scene for further price volatility.

“We don’t want to see those extreme highs back again otherwise Europe will turn on the tap again.

We need to get a few consistent years under our belts where the price is not over-inflated,” he said.

About 90 per cent of shareholders will only receive $6kgMS because of loan repayments to the co-operative, taken out to weather the past three seasons, kick in when the price hits $6, Currie said.

While most farmers should be able to knock-off around half the debt owed to Fonterra, a larger amount was borrowed from banks to get through the downturn, and repaying the principal on those loans would take time, he said.

Currie said the average farmgate milk price over the past three years, including this season, sat around $4.70kg.

Based on Fonterra’s forecast

and current production cycles, around $280 million dollars is expected to flow through the New Zealand dairy sector and wider provincial communities this season.

“If you take on board the amount of milk we are producing at present this means the average dairy farm in the country will be around $23,000 dollars better off,” Federated Farmers national dairy industry chairman Andrew Hoggard said.

Applying this figure to the 405 herds in Mid Canterbury equates to an extra $9.3 million (before debt servicing, tax and on farm expenses).

Farmers should be able to invest in their businesses, which had not been priority for the majority over in the past two years, Hoggard said.

Stronger production in March and April had partially offset lower peak milk production and collections are now expected to be down 3 per cent for the season, compared to an earlier forecast of 7 per cent, Fonterra chairman John Wilson said.

Fonterra’s revenue of $13.9 billion for the first nine months of 2016/17 is up 8 per cent on the same period last year, as a result of higher milk prices.

“Margins in most of our businesses are similar to last year and we have moved an additional 350 million liquid milk equivalent (LME) into higher value products in the year to date,” chief executive Theo Spierings said.

Consumer and Foodservice volumes in Greater China grew by 40 per cent in the period.

Fonterra was on track to exceed its target of moving an additional 400 million LME into higher value products by year-end, Spierings said.

“It’s a real concern when companies behave like this and there are no consequences,” Watt said.

However, the decision set a precedent in other areas.

“We don’t want companies believing restructuring can change terms (of employment) unilaterally,” he said.

Silver Fern Farms has appealed the decision and the matter will be heard in the Employment Court later this year.

Ashburton town centre hotel a giant step closer

In less than two years, a new hotel will be open and ready for business in central Ashburton.

Last year Eastfield Investments released details of its plan to build a 75-room, four-star hotel on land bounded by Cass, Burnett and Tancred streets. Yesterday it confirmed that the new hotel, to be run by Scenic Hotel Group, was expected to open in early May, 2019.

The new hotel will be constructed as part of the new $40 million, 10,548m2 development in the centre of Ashburton and a Heads of Agreement (HOA) between Scenic Hotel Group and Eastfield Investments Ltd has now been executed.

When completed it will front Burnett Street, sitting alongside Braided Rivers Restaurant and Bar. It will include 75 rooms with larger top floor apartments and will have a café and bar opening out to the central grassed area of the Eastfield precinct.

The company’s chairman Brian Davidson said the agreement meant Eastfield could move to the next stage of the project with confidence.

The agreement also underscored the confidence directors were seeing in the Eastfields project and it could well bring forward the development of the central destination area within the

“It will bring more tourists to the area and will create wideranging benefits for the region. It will also cater to a part of the market not currently served by the hotel sector.”

The hotel complex would also create a number of new jobs, he said.

The agreement allowed six months for the design and tender process and a further three months for consents to be secured before construction began early next year. May 1, 2019 has been tagged as opening day.

Ashburton is predicted to hit a crisis in classroom space for Year 1 to 8 students within the next two years.

Figures released in the Education Network annual assessment report put Ashburton at the top of the student number blowout list for Canterbury.

Currently primary and intermediate classroom space is at 97 per cent capacity and this is set to climb each year, peaking in 2021.

Ashburton is the only territorial authority in Canterbury that will be running at over capacity through to 2031; the remainder

are predicted to remain below 95 per cent utilisation.

Ashburton College is listed as being currently at 100 per cent capacity now and is set to peak at 104 per cent.

Eight other schools are close to capacity – St Josephs, 99 per cent, Allenton, 97 per cent, Hampstead, 97 per cent, Hinds, 96 per cent, Borough, 91 per cent, Intermediate, 91 per cent, Netherby, 89 per cent, Dorie, 87 per cent.

The report recommends that an enrolment scheme is required for Hinds, Borough, Intermediate and Netherby.

Hampstead might be sitting at 97 per cent capacity, but with a new classroom coming on board last year, it was in a comfortable situation in terms of student numbers, principal Peter Melrose said.

While the report suggests it should implement an enrolment zone, Melrose said one was already in place.

“It’s active in the sense that if our numbers are very high then we put it in place, but with 420

students we’re comfortable now.”

Until its new classroom opened last year the school was forced to convert its library into a classroom.

“We’re sweet at the moment, we’re happy with what we’ve got, it fits our student numbers.”

If Hampstead was comfortable, then Ashburton College was at absolute capacity, principal Ross Preece said.

“We’re full. We’ve had a meeting with the ministry and they’ve agreed to four new classrooms next year and four in the following years,” he said.

Currently it was impossible to find spare classroom space, Preece said.

“They’ve promised us that the business case for the grand plan of what they are going to do has to be ready by the end of June.”

The report suggested the college implement an enrolment zone, but the natural boundaries it had with the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers provided that to the north and south and there was a logical delineation in terms of feeder schools between the college and Mount Hutt College, he said.

A Methven Community Board member’s idea to extend the Methven Railway Reserve was not favourably received by council staff at a board meeting this week.

Member Ron Smith asked about extending the reserve out into an adjoining small block of Chorus-owned land on Main Street, formerly planned for a town skatepark under a council lease.

Smith’s comment followed a presentation from open spaces manager David Askin about the growing workload of his department.

Vandalism was a “big issue” in Ashburton, despite security cameras and patrols, and there had been 22 incidents at the district’s parks and reserves in February this year alone, Askin said.

Vandalism was mainly along State Highway One in Rakaia and Ashburton, and he showed photos of the Rakaia public toilet urinals smashed for the second time, which had happened within the last year.

Home detention for mother A mother who secretly dosed her daughter with schizophrenia medication causing her to hallucinate and lose muscle control has been sentenced to home detention.

The 37-year-old woman, who has name suppression to protect the identity of the victim, took the medication, Risperidone, from a hospital where she worked as a registered nurse, and slipped the drugs into her daughter’s yoghurt.

She continued to administer the drug to her 7-year-old daughter despite the child’s worsening health.

The mother, who appeared in the Wellington District Court yesterday, pleaded guilty to four counts of illtreating a child.

He sentenced her to 6 months home detention and 150 hours of community work.

One of two children diagnosed with typhoid in Palmerston North has family links to the recent outbreak in Auckland. A teenager is in Palmerston North Hospital being treated for the infectious disease. A preschooler, who is being treated with antibiotics, has a family link to the Auckland outbreak. Medical Officer of Health Dr Patrick O’Connor said the strain isolated from the younger child was identical to the Auckland cases, strongly suggesting this was the source of the infection. The health board contacted the centre, parents and caregivers before taking samples from the children and staff yesterday.

Police presence Central North Island residents have been warned to expect a high police presence as the search continues for a man wanted in relation to a range of serious offences. Senior sergeant Tony Jeurissen, of Taupo, said the Armed Offenders Squad, dog units and the Eagle helicopter have and will continue to be involved in the search for a man involved in a petrol station drive-off using a stolen vehicle in Tokoroa at 9am yesterday. The man is wanted on a range of serious offences, he said.

Police were also considering the possibility the man is no longer in the immediate area, but this would not be confirmed until a thorough search had been done.

“We urge the community to remain vigilant at this time and do not approach the man if you see him.

Do not give strangers lifts, and report any suspicious activity to police.”

Huge career break for Kennedy-Clark

Liam Kennedy-Clark will take a massive leap forward in his career this weekend when he joins the band of country music icon, Lee Kernaghan.

The opportunity is a game-changer for the Ashburton-raised artist, meaning he will be performing to packed crowds every weekend as part of the singer-songwriter’s 25th Anniversary Tour.

Now based in Queensland, Liam will be playing guitar and piano as part of the headlining band, but learning the songs won’t be a problem as he’s been a long-time fan.

“I was absolutely stoked,” he said.

“I found out the other day, I was down teaching and got a message from Tom Wolfe (of The Wolfe Brothers) who is currently on tour with Lee. “As well as being lucky enough to tour with such a big name, I know quite a few of the songs.”

Liam estimates he could be performing to about 1500 fans for each show and has already been in contact with the Australian star.

“He’s been supportive and said he’s had a look at some of my stuff,” he said.

“Lee’s really iconic; he’s a household name and everybody knows most of his songs (in Australia).”

Liam first saw Lee Kernaghan play at the Tamworth Country Music Festival five years ago, saying the whole expe-

rience opened his eyes to country as a genre.

As well as gearing up to the series of shows, Liam is also about to launch his EP, Travelling Lines on June 23.

He has funded the project himself and brought in a talented bunch of musicians who support him on the release.

While the multi-instrumentalist has been influenced by the likes of, Vince Gill, Albert Lee, Joe Walsh, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban, his own style has morphed into a unique sound all of his own.

“I grew up on classic country like Merle Haggard, The Highwaymen … so there’ll be a little bit of that and I’ve also found my own style,” he said.

“I’ve listened to a lot of Pink Floyd to REM, with country being my main love, so it’s a new style of country that caters to a wider audience.”

Liam is now looking forward to a trip home next month where he will hold the Hometown Show at The Ashburton Trust Event Centre on June 24.

The show will feature some of New Zealand’s best young artists, including Kayla Marshall, and Campbell & Alyssa Landrebe, along with a house band made up of musicians from Christchurch and Timaru.

“We have made it a whole lot bigger,” he said.

“We’ll have a lot of original music in the show, a lot of music I grew up on, and a few curveballs.”

Gymnasts see hard work pay off The Ashburton Gymnastics Club scooped six medals at the annual Best of the West competition held in Rolleston at the weekend.

Fourteen local gymnasts competed in the West Melton Gymnastics Club’s event at Rolleston Community Centre.

Highlights included Isla, Sophie and Annabel competing at Iron level, Nicole being named a gold medallist in the Bronze Grade and Esme receiving a silver medal in the Silver Grade.

A spokesperson said the students produced some great results and that the club is “mighty proud of” their hard work.

Variety Theatre struggling to Victims share the pain break even on Addams Family

of forced adoption When Sue Atkinson gave birth to her baby girl in 1962 her life was changed forever, but not in the way life does for most first time mothers.

Instead of being allowed to hold the little girl in her arms, to take her home and raise her with her boyfriend as she planned, the tiny baby was whisked from the room to be adopted without her consent and with heartbreaking effects.

Atkinson’s experience is one shared by women across New Zealand including Maggie Wilkinson whose petition for a broad and full inquiry into the practice of forced adoption from the 1950s to 1980s returned to Parliament yesterday.

“The whole thing is totally and utterly wrong, it’s criminal,” Atkinson said, sharing her story with NZ Newswire.

Across the country there are women who she says were told would never cope with having a child, subjected to cruelty and abuse until they agreed to relinquish their rights or were drugged and had the child taken from the hospital.

For two weeks after the birth of the daughter she wanted named Soraya, Atkinson was able to hold out, refusing to sign the adoption papers.

But without the support of her mother and with even a lawyer telling her the adoption was final regardless of her signature she gave in, believing she’d been beaten.

Her arms ached for her baby and she even took to carrying the family cat around in her arms as if it were a child.

“I couldn’t accept the fact that my child was gone and I went back to the lawyer and asked him to help me get her back,” she said.

“He told me that the adoptive parents had already returned one child and that there was no way they would be returning mine.”

It would be years before Atkinson would see her daughter again and she would finally get to tell that baby girl – who now has three children and four grandchildren of her own – how desperately she was wanted.

“I tried and tried to get my daughter back every which way I could and that’s lived with me forever,” she told NZ Newswire.

“I don’t make a big show of being upset about it all but I think my [subsequent] children have suffered because of it, and I think that’s wrong.”

The first calls for an inquiry were to former National MP Trevor Rogers in 1992.

As well as wanting recognition that what they were forced to go through was wrong and assurances it will never happen again, the women and children affected by forced adoption have other issues they want resolved like easier access to their birth records.

Atkinson is hopeful that now, after Australia pursued in inquiry, it might be New Zealand’s turn.

Variety Theatre Ashburton will struggle to break even on its latest show, The Addams Family, due to lower than expected ticket sales.

It generally costs the organisation from $100,000 to $120,000 each year to stage its annual production, the main costs being in technical management, lighting, sound, venue hire and paying the directing team.

President Kim Vessey said the cost of The Addams Family, staging through to Saturday at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, was about $120,000, and it would be “touch and go” as to whether it broke even or not.

“It does put pressure on the future shows for us, because it means we do have to work just that extra bit harder to make sure that people do go to them,” Vessey said.

However, she expected next year’s Variety production of Mamma Mia!, celebrating 10 years of the event centre, to be easy to sell in comparison.

Vessey said while some potential audience members believed ticket prices were high, Variety had not changed these for about five years.

The Addams Family was not as well known as some of the other more traditional productions staged by Variety in the past, however, other theatrical societies had had good success with the show in New Zealand.

Audiences which had attended had loved it and she urged Mid Cantabrians to see the

Addams Family on now at Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

show, staging at 7.30pm each night, with bookings and door sales available.

Centre manager Roger Farr said ticket sales for The Addams Family were sitting around the 50 per cent mark, whereas with previous Variety shows they had been more so around the 80 to 90 per cent mark.

As well as Addams Family sales being relatively low, ticket sales at the event centre had generally struggled this year.

This was in contrast to the last half of last year, in which shows had sold well.

Even shows that Farr had thought would sell like hot cakes this year had not. These included Kiwi star Tiki Taane bringing the stage production Tiki Taane Mahuta on June 9, and inter-

national comedy success Rhys Darby on July 27.

“We have been very well supported since we opened, promoters do like coming here, but when trying to attract new promoters, such as for Tiki Taane and Rhys Darby, you only get one shot at it and if it doesn’t work it’s very hard to convince them to come back again,” Farr said.

One of the factors leading to lower ticket sales could be competition from shows outside the district, such as the big name concerts of Adele and Ed Sheeran, and Showbiz productions in Christchurch. The man who stole young lives Salman Abedi carried out a deadly suicide bombing at a Manchester pop concert just days after returning from Libya, according to reports.

The 22-year-old’s visit to his family’s native country fuelled concerns he was preparing for Tuesday’s assault in Britain under the guidance of hardened jihadists.

The Times reported the Manchesterborn bomber spent three weeks in the war-torn north African nation before the attack on Manchester Arena, in which he was killed.

A friend told the paper: “He went to Libya three weeks ago and came back recently, like days ago.”

Islamic State, who claimed responsibility for the attack, and al-Qaeda have a presence in Libya, but Abedi might have travelled to their heartland in Syria for training.

Prime Minister Theresa May said it was possible he had planned his attack, which killed 22 people and injured 59, with a “wider group of individuals”.

Born and raised in Manchester, Abedi grew up in a Muslim household but matured into a university dropout with an appetite for bloodshed.

He was registered as recently as 2016 as living at Elsmore Road, where police raided a downstairs semi-detached property on Tuesday.

Neighbours recalled an abrasive, tall, skinny young man who was little known in the neighbourhood, and often seen in traditional Islamic clothing.

Roger Moore, the man who was Bond, dies Daniel Craig has joined Pierce Brosnan in paying tribute to their James Bond predecessor Sir Roger Moore after his death aged 89.

The longest-reigning 007 died in Switzerland after a “short but brave battle with cancer”, his family said.

An image of Moore with his arm around Craig as they both wore tuxedos was posted to official Bond social media accounts.

In an apparent reference to the theme of Moore’s The Spy Who Loved Me, Craig wrote: “Nobody Does It Better - love Daniel.”

as Bond four times, described Moore as “magnificent” as he shared a photograph on Instagram of the pair together.

Grande has now returned to the United States to be with her family and was greeted by her relatives when she touched down in Boca Raton, Florida. A source said “It’s so, so sad. She loves her fans and is absolutely crushed and devastated as you can imagine. She can’t believe this happened.”

Surfboard Alcoholic Anonymous CPR saves life demands manuscript return

Alcoholics Anonymous is demanding the return of its 1939 original manuscript describing the 12-step programme of recovery from alcoholism.

In New York state court last week, Alcoholics Anonymous World Services sued an Alabama man, Ken Roberts, who owns the manuscript, a New York art gallery and a California auction house.

Auction house Profiles in History will put the manuscript under the hammer on June 8, when it is expected to sell for between $US2 million and $US3 million.

The lawsuit said the manuscript was gifted to a man who left instructions for it to be given to Alcoholics Anonymous upon his death, but it never was.

The lawsuit says the original draft

copy of the manuscript “indisputably belongs” to Alcoholics Anonymous after Barry Leach, who received it from Wilson’s widow, signed a 1979 letter saying it would belong to the organisation upon his death.

The lawsuit blamed “either extreme negligence or potentially wrongful actions” about the time of Leach’s death in 1985 for it never reaching Alcoholics Anonymous.

As a result, the manuscript was sold at auction in June 2004 at Sotheby’s to William A Shenk for $US1.57 million.

The lawsuit said Roberts bought it at a Sotheby’s auction in 2007 for $US850,000 at a time when Alcoholics Anonymous was not aware of Leach’s notarised letter.

An “inventive” surfer is being praised for giving CPR to a fellow wave-catcher on his board after finding the man floating face down in waters off the Gold Coast.

Paramedic Clint Peters said the 58-yearold was “unconscious and unresponsive” when he was hauled from the waves yesterday morning.

After a few compressions, he said the man vomited up a “significant” amount of water before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The man had no memory of what had happened when he regained consciousness, Peters said.

“I think it was quite inventive and obviously quite important,” he said of the other surfer’s actions.

“But to actually ... attempt CPR while still out on the surf is very advantageous and a brave thing to do.”

Cruise confirms Top Gun 2 Tom Cruise says the long-awaited sequel to his 1986 hit Top Gun is “definitely happening” and will probably move into production “in the next year”. Top Gun 2 was announced some years ago, then put on hold in 2012 following the suicide of original filmmaker Tony Scott. Cruise is in Australia to promote his latest film, The Mummy, where he told Channel Seven’s Sunrise the sequel is once more ready to take flight. “It’s true. Yeah, it’s true ... I’m going to start filming it, probably in the next year,” Cruise said with his trademark big grin. “It’s happening, it is definitely happening.”

passionate group of Girl Guides got in early last night to lead the charge in a protest against bullying.

Waving placards and chanting on the chessboard, the empowered group began a call to arms that will be heard loud and clear across the country over the next few days.

Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day, a movement that urges all New Zealanders to speak up and stand together to stamp out bullying.

Celebrated annually across the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new Year 10 student was harassed and threatened for wearing pink.

It has turned into a global phenomenon that celebrates diversity and creates a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or cultural background.

Leading the charge is the Mental Health Foundation, with support from The Peace Foundation, RainbowYOUTH, InsideOUT, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association, Youthline and Family Works.

Locally, we’ve already heard about wonderful initiatives you’re planning to support the cause.

From school discos to mufti days, we’re looking forward to seeing the district awash with a sea of pink power.

Here at the Ashburton Guardian, we’re always keen to do our bit and will be dressing up for a pink-themed morning tea.

We must use this as an opportunity to speak up, stand up and fight every form of bullying in our communities.

YOUR VIEW Swimmable rivers I refer to the Government’s plan to make our rivers ‘swimmable’ by 2040.

As I recall, the Government’s target is to double agricultural production by 2025.

If 90 per cent of our rivers are to be swimmable by 2040, the Government needs to confirm this is possible while at the same time allowing the continuing expansion of the dairy industry which is the major cause of our polluted rivers.

Whilst the farmers are gradually fencing off streams and planting riparian strips to counter the effects of nitrates entering our waterways, this will never be enough to stop the pollution which can only increase along with increased production encouraged by large-scale irrigation schemes made viable by government subsidies.

These schemes have been proven to be uneconomic without government assistance and to make matters worse, the Government doesn’t include the inevitable cost of repairing environmental damage in the years ahead.

It has been shown by reducing the number of cows, some farm-

ers have actually increased their profitability while at the same time reducing their nitrate levels.

Is ECan encouraging this?

To claim they can make our rivers ‘swimmable’ (using their definition of ‘swimmable’) by 2040, is too far in the future, we want to see signs that the Government is serious about tackling this very serious problem by taking bold steps now.

Until they can prove increasing agricultural production and improving the quality of our rivers at the same time using their recently published ‘range of measures is possible’, their measures are purely hypothetical.

terests of the district and not to promote personal agendas.

There is an expectation that as part of being an elected representative, councillors will come to meetings fully informed and aware of all sides of any discussion.

The MAR project is at the very front of developing technology for better use of our precious resources. It is already indicating unexpected benefits above those that the scientists who brought the concept to the district envisaged.

The background to MAR stems from the ECan-led Hinds zone process, which involved all parts of the community in meetings over a two-year period.

There was very significant input from all sections of the community, much of it on a voluntary basis, with all involved very much focused on an outcome which benefited not only the Hinds zone but wider Ashburton, Canterbury and New Zealand.

To have this outcome put at the mercy of councillors very early in the term of this council, who are not interested in the facts, should be a concern for all residents.

I fully support the points raised in the letter from David Clarke (Guardian, May 22) and would

urge our councillors to think carefully about the issues and to prepare fully for debate on the issues they face at each meeting.

Mixed blessings from low southern hydro lakes

By Pattrick Smellie Low inflows of water into the South Island’s hydro-electricity storage lakes are expected to knock Contact Energy’s earnings in the second half of the current financial year but should boost prices for electricity to residential, commercial and industrial users next year, says analysis from investment firm First New Zealand Capital.

“South Island hydrology has shifted gear from flood to trickle,” wrote analyst Nevill Gluyas in a research note dated May 23. “Storage in southern lakes has fallen to now reach the 1 per cent risk level, ie, one previously observed extreme hydro sequence could result in future shortfall.”

New Zealand has experienced periodic winter electricity savings campaigns in the 1990s and 2000s, caused by so-called ‘dry winters’ in the eastern South Island catchments, which account for around 80 per cent of the country’s relatively limited hydro storage capacity in an electricity

In recent years inflows have been normal or above average while the combination of falling electricity demand and major investments in new wind and geothermal power stations have

seen wholesale electricity prices sag and kept pressure off prices to consumers.

While Gluyas notes that inflows “could bounce back at any time”, the current low inflow sequence “has restored tension in 2018 financial year forward prices, lifting our FY18 earnings before interest,

tax, depreciation, amortisation and movements in the value of financial instruments (ebitdaf) by 1.5 per cent to $533 million”.

“Price tension and reversion to mean inflows mean our FY18 outlook improves ... benefiting not only Contact’s merchant outlook, but also bringing favourable pressure on retail and commercial/industrial sales and pricing.”

FNZC’s detailed forecasts show Contact earning an average $49.40 per Megwatt hour for wholesale electricity in the current financial year, down on last year’s actual average of $59.60 per MWh. In the next financial year, it forecasts a jump to an average of $75.30 per MWh, before rising to above $80 per MWh in FY2021.

In the current financial year, however, higher wholesale electricity input costs, along with a $4 million cost to switch from the FlyBuys to the AA Smartfuel scheme and an expected increase in the price Contact pays for LPG is estimated to knock 2 per cent off ebitdaf, which FNZC now estimates at $518 million.

It continues to rate Contact stock at ‘outperform’, raising its target price per share by 2 cents to $5.90, compared with $5.05 in trading on the NZX yesterday morning.

The shares last traded above $6 apiece in June 2015, were at $5.46 a year ago and fell as low as $4.35 in November before recovering to current levels.

Gluyas noted that the electricity system operator, managed by national grid owner Transpower, is currently doing daily monitoring of the generation mix, with more use of gas and coal-fired power stations in the North Island and increased water conservation in the southern catchments controlled by Contact and fellow generator-retailers Meridian Energy and Genesis Energy.

The Transpower website yesterday morning shows that while South Island hydro generation capacity of 3749 Megawatts is available, only about half of that is in use, with southern hydro generation running at 1947MW.

Sallies want social need addressed The Salvation Army has outlined five initiatives it would like to see in today’s Government Budget.

The Budget must reduce the level of social need in New Zealand, says Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Hutson, director of the army’s social policy and parliamentary unit.

It was concerning that the number of people seeking help for housing, budgeting, drug addiction treatment and other services was increasing, he said.

“Changing the level of social

need requires government assistance and we are keenly looking for budget initiatives that ensure this happens,” Lt Col Hutson said.

Five initiatives he said were crucial in the budget were: ■■ An annual allocation of at least $500 million over the next 10 years to increase social and affordable housing ■■ $500m towards the restoration of the Working for Families programme back to 2009 levels ■■ An increased commitment to

funding prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration, with the agreement that much of this work happens outside the prison gate ■■ Abandoning the plan to spend $1 billion on 1200 more prison beds ■■ A 10 per cent increase in alcohol taxes each year for the next three years, which will raise the prices of cheap liquor and therefore reduce harmful drinking.

Winterfeed judges will have a discerning eye for the best fodderbeet, swedes and kale when they tour Mid Canterbury farms today.

They will be visiting the properties of the grand finalists, chosen from the district’s Methven, Mayfield and Ashburton A&P associations’ winterfeed competitions.

First on their 2017 Mid Canterbury Winterfeed Competition Grand Final itinerary will be the Waimarama Road property of Warwick Bell (swedes).

Other properties to follow are Bob Brown on Blackford Road (fodderbeet), James Anderson on Lyndhurst Road (fodderbeet), Karl Henderson on Franks Road (kale), Chris Curd on Dromore Methven Road (kale), Milton Hulme on Winchmore School Road (fodderbeet), Ross Duncan on Rules Road (swedes), Sparks Brothers on Haylors Road (fodderbeet), Barry Daly on Boltons Road (kale), Paul Ross on Or-

The finalists will be rewarded for their top growing efforts with a grand final dinner hosted by the Methven A&P Association at Brinkley Resort in Methven in the evening, to also be attended by sponsors and invited guests.

Spokesperson James Anderson said it had been a kind growing season for the winterfeed crops and management practices had been of a high standard.

“I think the standard overall has been exceptional,” Anderson said.

Awards to be presented at the evening included a tray for overall champion crop and a cup for the target crop, which this year was swedes.

Additionally there would be about $4000 in sponsorship prizes awarded.

Makes 15-20 15-20 bamboo wide, flat bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 1 hour 2-3 chillis, deseeded 3 cloves garlic, peeled 2t turmeric 1 onion, roughly chopped Thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, chopped 1t salt 1t peanut or sesame oil 1T grated palm sugar, 400g Tegel Fresh Chicken Mince ■■ Put chilli, garlic, turmeric, onion, ginger, salt, oil and palm sugar into a food processor or blender and process to form a paste.

■■ In a bowl mix the prepared paste and Tegel Fresh Chicken Mince together.

■■ Take 2T of the mixture and wrap this around one third of the

■■ Cook the sate over a preheated barbecue or under a hot grill, turning often.

Ashburton Guardian

Ashburton Indoor Bowls The Ashburton bowlers have been busy lately with the annual Ashburton vs South Canterbury rep match. Spilt into two sections, 16 players played for the Hight Trophy and the next 16 players played for the Calder Shield!

The contest couldn’t have been any closer by the end of the day’s play! The Hight Trophy ended up tied on 56pts each, which meant the holder South Canterbury retained the Trophy!

In the Calder Shield Ashburton narrowly defeated South Canterbury 57pts to 55pts! Best performers were Martin Nordqvist and Gaylene Smith with 5.5 wins from 6!

The Ashburton Rep team also had their annual fixture against Ellesmere. 24 players took part with a game of fours, pairs and singles being played. Best bowlers on the night were Maurice Sunbeam, Jim Stewart, Charlie Cleghorn, Adrienne Richards, Mark Sheard, Graeme Chapman, Cecil Tubb, Helen Rennie, Martin Nordqvist, Neil Atkinson all with 3 wins from 3!

Special mention to Jackie Gilbert who was representing Ashburton for the first time! The Ashburton team winning 29 – 13.

Interclub is up and running and after two rounds played, Willowby 1 has taken an early lead in division one on 26pts, second is Rakaia on 19pts. In division two Carew leads on 21pts, second on 16pts is MSA 3.

The International between NZ and AUS has recently been played with our very own local player Simon Thomas being part of the Mat Blacks team! Simon was able to gain a Medal skipping the men’s triples team which won 3-0. Overall the Mat Blacks came out on top over their counterparts winning 41pts – 25.

Also the selectors have named the following players to represent Ashburton in the Paterson Trophy in Nelson on 14th-16th July. Simon Thomas, Grant Wilson, Mat Bassett, Graeme Chapman, Michael Lawson, Matt Markham, Russell Ellis, Ken Mackenzie.

First VP Lion Joe Butchard announced that the 2017 Charity Market would be held March 3-4. Lion Meredith thanked all had assisted with the Wheels Week activities which had not been without its frustrations. Discussions with another Lions Club re a combined centennial project is under way.

Lion Ron Paterson introduced the speaker for the evening, John Driscoll, Chairman of Community House. John went through the history of the organisation from its small beginnings fulfilling a need in the community to the much larger operation it has now become.

Originally it was established as a resource centre administered by volunteers.

Following the earthquake their building did not meet standard requirements and a new location was sought. Temporary premises were rented until a decision was made to purchase the present location. The name has changed to Community House is a fully equipped modern building housing many local and servicing agencies.

Operating as a Charitable Trust it is debt free due to generous donations from many sources. A community bus, also donated, is available for local use.

Next ladies craft day June 16 at Val Cartney’s home followed by lunch in Rakaia. Following Tail Twister Lion Ron the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Ashburton Rose Group The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Rose Group was held at Kathy Collie’s home on Wednesday May 10 at 6pm.

Kathy welcomed 11 members and we had apologies from 5 members.

Before starting our meeting we all enjoyed a fish and chip tea.

A discussion was held on Rose care for this time of year. Now is a good time to grow Rose cuttings but be sure you have clean secateurs when cutting the roses.

To grow cuttings split the end of the stem dip in honey or rooting hormone and plant in potting mix.

Our general meeting then finished and the Annual General Meeting followed: Election of Officers: Patron Audrey McKay, President Kathy Collie, Vice President: Penny Rowe, Secretary Annette Emmerson, Treasurer Maureen Small, Programme Merill Dudley.

Our mid-winter meal will be held June 11 at 12 noon at The Stables.

The winner of the cup with most points in our Rose Shows for the season was Audrey McKay with 58 points, Pauline O’Leary and Merill Dudley 23 points 2 =, Kathy Collie 9 points 3rd, and Catherin Heffernan 8 points 4th.

Another exciting week for our club members with success at both the Ashley and North Canterbury Championships for our junior team. Lanelle McArthur, Shania Harrison-Lee and Emma Smith winning the junior teams at Ashley and Shania, Emma and Morgan Smith clinching the same at North Canterbury.

While the qualifying rounds are only just under way Steve McArthur has a pretty firm grip on a place in the South Island open team, Sandy Bennett, Michaela Smith and Nina McKenzie have made good starts for the women’s team while Lanelle, Shania and Emma are looking good for the Junior (and maybe women’s) teams.

On the home front Steve McArthur continued his good form with a pair of possible and a good group of chasers to keep him honest. Keith Bonnington and Colin Taylor are both showing big promise and young Tyler Tuki managed two P.B.s. on the trot.

Topics include “having an Income live as long as you do”, “avoiding Phone Scams”.

The treasurer reported subs coming in well and the bank balance is looking good. The film for June is” Pecking Order” starring our own local identity Brian Glassey. Pat Weir and Jenny Proctor entertained us with glimpses into their lives by answering a series of questions put to them by Vera. The raffles were won by Lorraine Kerr and Pam Love.

The main speaker for the day was the Mayor Donna Favel who gave us some interesting insights into her job. The Mayor’s role is wide and varied ie she had just spoken to the Hearing Association and as a result of this she was able to use sign language to introduce herself and all councillors will have their hearing tested ( if you can’t hear you can’t listen). She also brought with her information for seniors available from ADC about Recycling Waste Management and Super Gold Card Discounts available in Ashburton. She was able to give us an over view of the results of the Residents Survey 2017 which has recently been carried out by the ADC. The Mayor was thanked by Val Dellow and presented with a fruit tray.

Over 80 members were welcomed to our Tuesday meeting by President Roger Lake, who also welcomed 2 visitors and acknowledged member Cam Ellis’ 92nd birthday.

Our mini speaker was Bob Jones. Born in Yorkshire in 1942, he went into basic training as a boy soldier with the Coldstream Guards in 1958. His army career included postings to Kenya, Bahrain, Suez, Zanzibar and Aden, as well as guard and ceremonial duties in England.

In 1969 he joined the English police force and a few years later migrated with his wife to work in the NZ Police force. In 1982 he was transferred to Ashburton where he retired in 2007.

Our main speaker was Ashburton Mayor, Donna Favell, supported by Councillors Lovett and Urquhart. After describing her family history and working life, Mayor Favell gave a rundown on the main issues being addressed by today’s council, especially the location of the proposed new council and library buildings but also touching on wheelie bins, council contracts and water useage. This was followed by questions from the audience. Roger Tasker thanked our speakers, which drew the meeting to a close.

Ashburton’s The Plainsmen had a steady result in the double header second round of the National District Championship, gaining thirteen points for a clean sweep against Taranaki, and three for Junior win v Manawatu for total sixteen points.

Nigel McGrath was more than happy to ever so slightly to slip under the radar with Dizzy Miss Lizzy in the PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales Series Final at Addington last week.

And he’s hopeful of being able to do the same when the Harness Jewels roll into Ashburton next week.

Charged with the knowledge that he had his two-year-old filly right where he wanted her to be for the major assignment, the Weedons trainer knew it was just a case of the cards falling his way last Friday night and he’d be in with a shot.

Tom Dumoulin’s overall lead in the Giro d’Italia was drastically reduced in the race’s toughest stage yesterday after the Dutchman stopped to answer the call of nature at the foot of the last of three major climbs.

Defending champion Vincenzo Nibali of the Bahrain-Merida team won the 16th leg, which crossed the Mortirolo and Stelvio passes.

Just before the unprecedented ascent to the Umbrail pass in Switzerland, Dumoulin stopped at the side of the road, stripped off his pink jersey and hopped down into a ditch to take care of business.

By the time Dumoulin got back on his bike, the Team Sunweb rider had already dropped far behind his rivals.

“I just had some problems,” Dumoulin said. “I started to feel it in the downhill of the Stelvio and I had to stop. Back on the bike I decided to fight and draw conclusions after the finish. I’m still in the maglia rosa (leader’s pink jersey) but I’m above all very disappointed.”

Threatening Australian players ‘a risky mistake’

‘Biggest mis-match ever’

The brinkmanship that is Cricket Australia’s pay dispute with the players’ union continues to bubble, with the latter warning the governing body they risk making a “dangerous” and unnecessary mistake.

The current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expires on June 30 and there has been little progress in protracted talks regarding a new deal.

The stumbling block is the revenue-sharing model that governs players’ wages. CA want it scrapped, while the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) are adamant that can’t and won’t happen.

Even if the deadline passes, both parties could sign a stopgap agreement that ensures this summer’s Ashes and Australia’s mooted tour of Bangladesh in August is not affected.

However, Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive James Sutherland recently indicated his organisation were not contemplating such arrangements in a stern email to players.

Vice-captain David Warner fired back at his boss, declaring players could sign up with Twenty20 franchises around the world if they were unemployed on July 1.

Nicholson agrees with Australia’s opening batsman, whose stocks rose even further in the just-completed IPL. “To threaten Australia’s cricketers shows an apparent lack of appreciation of international circumstances,” Nicholson said.

“CA forcing them into unemployment is an open invitation to the international cricket world. It’s a dangerous mistake and one that is completely unnecessary.

Nicholson added that players were “in high demand for more money all over the world” but desperate to play for Australia plus their state and Big Bash League sides.

Sugar Ray Leonard believes Floyd Mayweather against UFC star Conor McGregor is the biggest mis-match in boxing history – a fight not for the purists – but conceded yesterday that, fuelled by social media and hype, it is a contest that the world’s sports fans want to see.

Mayweather said it was the only fight which interested him, having retired 20 months ago with an unblemished 49-0 record, with the Dubliner, who has brought a new wave of fans to his sport, having been calling for this “billion dollar fight” for almost two years.

“It will be successful, financially,” said Leonard. “It is intriguing. It reminds me of when Muhammad Ali fought Inoki. I saw it just the other day. Back then I loved it but ... if they decide upon boxing with McGregor, Mayweather wins hands down. But if McGregor was able to kick ...”

The fight will only go ahead as a boxing match, according to Mayweather.

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has resisted making sweeping changes but his under-performing players are running low on brownie points going into Saturday’s NRL clash against Brisbane.

A number of players are lucky to have retained their spots after the Warriors conceded at least 30 points in two awful defeats to Penrith and St George Illawarra over the past fortnight.

Kearney is conscious of the fragile state of his side and held off on swinging the axe in the hope they will repay his loyalty and turn things around against the Broncos at Mt Smart Stadium.

He remains confident they can reproduce the resilience and determination that saw their form climb over a five week period prior to the representative round, and earned wins over Parramatta, Gold Coast and the Sydney Roosters.

“I take myself back to two performances ago and the five weeks previous to that, the guys had done a pretty good job,” said Kearney.

“We’ve made a couple of subtle adjustments. We get Simon (Mannering) back this week and made a couple of changes, but the last thing I want to do is send panic through the organisation.”

From front-row to fullback, almost the entire side has been below par, but major concerns hang over the forwards ability to assert themselves physically and their edge defence on both sides of the ruck.

Halves Shaun Johnson and Kieran Foran are under pressure to improve the side’s struggling attack and last tackle kicking options and more is needed from centres Blake Ayshford and David Fusitu’a.

With patience wearing thin, Kearney admitted a third straight loss would leave him with little alternative but to consider other options in the weeks ahead.

“I’ll look at that certainly after this weekend,” he said.

“Am I happy with some of them - no, I’m not. But I’ve got to trust in them and the same players were doing a good job three games ago, so you can’t lose that, their ability, in the space of two weeks.

“But it’s making sure that I give them every opportunity to get that back.”

The side is buoyed by the return of former captain Mannering with the veteran lock overcoming a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the last two games.

Young front-rower Albert Vete is likely to start off the bench in his first outing since the round three loss to Canterbury, with senior prop Jacob Lillyman away on State of Origin duty for Queensland.

Mannering’s leadership and defence around the middle of the park has been sorely missed, but Kearney does not expect the former Kiwis captain to turn the side’s fortunes by himself.

With the Michael Duff Memorial locked away for safe-keeping, Southern will look to start their Centennial Mug campaign this weekend in much the same fashion.

They rounded out the first competition of the season in senior B rugby with a bonus point win over Celtic last Saturday to finish clear leaders on the points table at the end of the Michael Duff Memorial with eight competition points separating them and their nearest rivals.

Aside from a mid-competition hiccup when they took on

Hampstead on Anzac Day, the Pirates have been untouchable and that form makes them an ominous prospect for their rivals heading into the second half of the season.

They kick off their Centennial Mug bid against Allenton at Allenton on Saturday afternoon in what promises to be an exciting match.

Both sides have shown a real affinity to attacking rugby and Allenton will be smarting after they were demolished by a rampant Hampstead last Saturday afternoon on their home ground, losing 12-48.

That loss was enough to bump

them out of second on the table after a really encouraging start to proceedings.

Hampstead, on the other hand, might be the team to push Southern, as they’ve already registered a win against them.

They will head just around the corner to have a tussle with Collegiate, who finished tied with them on 23 competition points in the Michael Duff Memorial.

With a greater points differential, Hampstead can claim bragging rights, but they’ll need to carry that form over to this weekend as Collegiate have proven, on more than one occasion this season, they are more than capa-

ble of beating anyone.

Mt Somers, who picked up a morale-boosting victory against Rakaia last weekend, where they won 31-7, will host Celtic on Saturday and be looking to start the Centennial Mug in a strong fashion to push their case for the second half of the season.

The cellar-dwellers from the Michael Duff Memorial, Methven and Rakaia, will go headto-head in the weekend’s final match.

Methven were comprehensive winners the last time the two sides met two weeks ago, but will this time head to Rakaia to take on their country neighbours.

Schoolboys suspended after haka incident Three Otago Boys’ High School First XV players have been suspended for foul play.

The suspensions were issued at an Otago Rugby Football Union judiciary hearing on Monday night and relate to separate incidents during a haka and an interschool rugby match against King’s High School at Littlebourne on Tuesday last week.

When approached for comment, OBHS rector Richard Hall issued a brief statement.

“The players have also been disciplined by the school and, in addition, have offered to provide voluntary services to show their remorse,’’ Hall said.

Boys record a win while girls go down Basketball fans at the Oxford Street Stadium on Tuesday left smiling, despite Ashburton College losing one of the two games played there.

The senior girls lost a close encounter to competition favourites Rangi Ruru 67-59, while the senior boys were on fire from the three-point line in a good battle to beat Rangiora High School 95-63.

The boys had faced the top seeds in their two Thompson Trophy games, losing both narrowly, and headed to Oxford Street determined to win. They were ahead 38-33 at halftime, but then let loose a superb shooting display that Rangiora couldn’t match.

Coach Pip Johnston said the boys started slowly and took a bit of time to get into the game.

“When they started to pick up the defensive effort, we got turnovers and turned them into points – a great team effort with everybody looking for the open player.

“It was a way better shooting night for us as well. Quinn (Ritchie) and Nick (Fechney) lit it up from the outside knocking down some nice three-pointers.

“I knew it was only a matter of time for us to get a win in this competition and we’ll look to keep building on it.”

Leading points scorers were Fletcher Arnold (22), Ritchie (16) and Fechney (13).

Arnold heads to Auckland for the national under-19 tourna-

ment over Queen’s Birthday weekend, as a member of one of the two Canterbury Combined teams. Johnston is also going, as associate coach.

Round three of the Whelan Trophy competition saw the Ashburton College senior girls host unbeaten number one seed Rangi Ruru. Having not been challenged in their first two games so far this season the college girls knew a tough encounter was on the cards.

College started strongly on defence, intent on making Rangi’s Year 13 Junior Tall Fern, Esra McGoldrick, earn her points.

This, along with some solid work in the offensive paint from forwards Sophie Adams and Ashlee Strawbridge gave the college girls a 17-10 lead at the quarter.

College continued to put the pressure on early in the second quarter, at one point holding a 12-point buffer. With some of its key players in foul trouble, Rangi Ruru was forced to switch its defensive tack. The result paid dividends, with college only ahead by three at the half, 29-26.

With some adjustments at the half, college came out strongly in the third quarter scoring regularly through Strawbridge and guard, Liberty Ross. On the wings Grace Adams and Dani McArthur pressured the ball well, forcing Rangi into some tough shots, allowing college to hold a 49-42 lead into the final quarter.

Ngatai still out The Chiefs are taking a precautionary approach with Charlie Ngatai. The All Blacks and Chiefs midfielder missed last week’s loss to the Crusaders with a headache, and isn’t in the 23 to play the Blues on Friday. Chiefs assistant coach Neil Barnes says with Ngatai’s history, they just want to be sure. Meanwhile the Chiefs have dropped Japanese captain Michael Leitch for Friday’s game, with Liam Messam taking his spot. Barnes says Messam has earned a start and has been training well, while Leitch’s recent performances have opened the door. In the other changes to the side, Johnny Faauli’s will start at second five, forcing Anton Lienert-Brown to centre.

College Coach Andrew Shepherd was extremely proud of his girls’ effort, but disappointed they couldn’t keep up the intensity in the final stanza.

“Last season Rangi beat us twice by 20-plus points, we’ve made some huge improvements in the off-season and are right there with these top teams.”

Meeting a no-go The Australian Rugby Union’s proposed ‘informal’ meeting to outline plans to cut a Super Rugby team won’t happen. And it paves the way for a possible board challenge in the middle of the June Test window. The governing body was willing to meet with anxious players and state unions this week to shed light on how it intends to shut down either the Western Force or Melbourne Rebels, amid a drawn-out process and legal battles involving both franchises.

It’s understood that meeting will not go ahead, largely because of scheduling issues.

Tougher competition sparks conundrum

An exposure to a tougher competition of netball has provided a catch-22 situation for Mid Canterbury’s netball selectors.

Senior coach Ange Leadley named her first trial squad for the season this week and said the process this year was different to others due to a lot more players being introduced to a much stronger level of netball than what they might have normally been used to.

But while that might make things a little trickier for the selection panel, it’s also providing a positive because they are now able to see who is capable of taking the step up.

“It’s always an exciting time of year when it comes to naming the first group of players,” Leadley said.

Warren Whiteley has been confirmed as the new captain of the Springboks. The Lions loose forward takes over from hooker Adriaan Strauss, who retired from international rugby at the end of last season, and will be the 58th player to lead the Springboks in tests. Utility back Francois Steyn returns to the squad for the test series against France next month for the first time in five years, while Toulon number eight Duane Vermeulen also returns. There are eight uncapped players in the 31-strong squad.

The inaugural competition has seen Mid Canterburybased sides tackling teams from around the Canterbury region on a weekly basis, often against sides who have been premiership-winning teams in their own regions.

“There’s no doubt that the level of netball we have been playing during the week has been of a higher level than we have before, so it’s been a really good opportunity to see how some players handle that.

“We’ve been able to watch a fair bit of their games and I’m really happy with those we have selected.”

Leadley named a squad of 23 initially and they will meet to trial on June 20, with a final squad of 10 to be found to compete for the representative season.

Robbery ‘shocking, bizzare’ The whole plan had been to celebrate Scott Dixon’s pole-winning run for the Indianapolis 500 at a downtown Italian restaurant.

But the restaurant was closed by the time Dixon had completed his media obligations Sunday night.

“Really only the next choice was to get fast food,” Dixon said yesterday.

So Dixon and friend Dario Franchitti headed to Taco Bell, where Dixon planned to order his usual Cheesy Gordita Crunch, subbing beans for the meat. Just down the road from hallowed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the two were robbed at gunpoint while waiting in the drive-thru lane.

“It was definitely shocking, disbelief for the most part,” said Dixon, who acknowledged the “bizarre contrast” of being robbed a few hours after the high of winning the pole for the fabled race coming up this Sunday.

“It will make you feel really small again,” Dixon said.

“They held a gun at Dixon’s head and asked him for his wallet and his phone,” Kanaan said.

Dixon, who is nicknamed “The Iceman” because nothing seems to rattle him, said he felt he and Franchitti remained calm

throughout the incident. Both he and Franchitti are avid watch collectors; Dixon said the vintage Rolex he was wearing and “a Daytona edition that Dario had been wearing as his lucky watch” were the two most valuable things in the car. Neither watch was taken.

Dixon, by the way, won the pole using a white-knuckle setup from engineer Chris Simmons.

His four-lap average was 232.164 mph, the best qualifying run in 21 years at Indy . When he saw his speed, Dixon thought the speedometer was broken.

It’s the third pole at Indy for Dixon, the 2008 race winner and a four-time series champion, and he understands the significance of the achievement.

“Winning the pole really means a lot for the drivers,” he said. “You are trying to keep the car on its limits, so there’s kind of respect amongst yourselves, in this community. Although the race is the important part, there’s a great sense of pride in what we did Sunday.”

Several days removed from the rollercoaster of emotions, Dixon seemed intent on putting the robbery behind him and focusing on winning his second Indianapolis 500 as he made the annual off-day media tour, this time to Toronto.

The New Zealander did have some reflection about his experience at Taco Bell – the choice only because McDonald’s, a Ganassi team sponsor that had a location next door was closed for renovations.

“I think the biggest thing is you are just hoping that everything is OK, grateful that nothing silly happened,” Dixon said. “That’s the world of difference. That aside, personally, it maybe brings you to think about choices you make.”

Andretti hoping six-pack leads to victory lane Michael Andretti’s busiest month could turn into his best Indianapolis show.

He has four cars in the front three rows of Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.

Two of those drivers — the defending race champion, Alexander Rossi, and this year’s highestprofile rookie, Fernando Alonso — avoided getting sidetracked by sideshows.

Andretti’s own son, Marco, thrived despite taking on extra coaching duties this May. Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indy 500 champion, posted the fastest qualifying average outside the nine-car pole shootout, and Japan’s Takuma Sato proved he could be a contender. On Monday, rookie Jack Harvey moved up the speed chart, too.

If these guys produce all the right numbers this weekend, Andretti Autosport will have the best six-pack of racers in 500 history.

“It’s been good because of the data we’ve been able to share and pass on, not only for someone like Marco or Ryan, but it’s been good for all the guys,” Michael Andretti said.

The six Andretti cars in the 33car starting grid are the most by one team since Andy Evans started seven in 1996 with Team Scandia. Even for a team that regularly starts four cars, embarking on such an enormous challenge carries all sorts of potential pitfalls.

Finding sponsors and cars are the most glaring concerns, and

Andretti said he never would have considered such a daunting feat if both hadn’t already been resolved. Finding crew members, spotters and strategists for all of the drivers isn’t easy, either.

“People are a huge problem because everyone in Indianapolis has a job right now,” said Michael Shank, co-owner of Harvey’s No. 50 car. “I have 22 to 25 guys in my shop, so it was only natural we could do it.”

Andretti needed the help to

make it work. But it was only a start.

Chip Ganassi Racing managing director Mike Hull believes that to be successful running so many cars, a team must find the right blend of selfless personalities to mesh in Gasoline Alley.

Andretti, with an assist from Shank and Bryan Herta, the coowner of Alexander Rossi’s No. 98 car, didn’t have to be too patient: From the moment the cars rolled onto the oval, they were already

fast. Marco Andretti finished the first day atop the speed chart.

He’ll start eighth Sunday, the middle of Row 3.

Hunter-Reay produced topfive laps in practice each of the first four days he turned laps and qualified 10th, the inside of Row 4.

Rossi and Sato, both former Formula One drivers, helped the two-time F1 champ make a quick transition from the familiar high-tech, road-course cars to

the even faster cars on unfamiliar ovals. Rossi is starting from the third spot on the front row. Sato and Alonso qualified in the second row and will start fourth and fifth.

“From all the comments that arrived to me, the comments from them are very, very useful because they know how one car behaves and how the other car behaves and what they needed when they came here,” said Alonso, the Spaniard whose 500 debut has attracted wide attention. “I probably experienced more or less the same journey as them.”

The only real glitch over the past two weeks has been Harvey, a rookie from England.

He crashed early in practice because of a steering problem, later blew an engine and wound up qualifying 27th. While he appreciates getting the opportunity to race again – and is thrilled to give Shank his 500 entry – he acknowledges it’s hard not to think some of the problems were preventable. So does Andretti.

“I think with the sixth car, there were some things we could have improved on,” Andretti said.

For now, though, Andretti and his six drivers are focused on one goal: Topping Sunday afternoon with a drive through victory lane.

“It is a big challenge for our team,” Andretti said. “There’s a lot, a lot of hours that go into organising something like this and making it all happen and we’ve got to get it right.”

Sport Read re-signs until 2019 All Blacks captain Kieran Read has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby until 2019 and will have a new provincial team. Read has revealed he is returning to the province where he was born and raised, and has signed with Counties Manukau through to 2019. Though bad news for Blues fans, he will remain with the Crusaders until the end of the deal. The 97-test number eight will play up until the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan where he will aim to become the first player, along with teammate Sam Whitelock, to win the tournament three times.

Netball show-down The final week of the inter-centre premier netball competition will see most Ashburton teams hosting home games as the inaugural competition draws to a close.

The competition has run for six weeks as a pilot to provide a variety of strong games across Christchurch, Ashburton and North Canterbury-based teams.

As it draws to a close, Mid Canterbury Netball administrator Aimee Cosgrove said it had been a real pleasure hosting the teams for the inaugural competition.

“The teams have enjoyed the hour-long games and the level of competition they’ve had, despite some of the scores not reflecting how the games were played.

“This competition has given our players further opportunity to broaden their skills and we hope to see it continue for 2018.”

It has also been of benefit for

bench officials and umpires who have had the opportunity to officiate the next level of competition, she said.

The final week will see a local derby between Southern and Hampstead, who have both had a mixed bag of results.

Ashburton College are coming off the back of a win last week against Greenpark but will be expecting a tougher challenge in Technical, who last week beat Celtic – who are no doubt favourites to take out the local competition this year.

The Ashburton College and Technical match will see a square-off between sisters, Nicole and Meg Witterick.

Nicole, who was a former member of the Ashburton College side, now plays her netball out of the Technical Club in Christchurch. Younger sister Meg

has been a solid performer for the College side all season.

Methven will round out their competition against Greenpark, who will no doubt still be hurting from the loss against College and will be looking for a strong performance.

United host the last of the home games against Halswell, who are sitting third equal on the table. United is coming off the back of a win against Methven last week and will be hoping to continue strengthening their combinations.

Celtic will travel for a final time to take on Saints at the Bishopdale YMCA. While they’ve had some big wins against Christchurch teams, their form has dipped in the past couple of weeks, something coach Ange Leadley is keen to rectify.

“We haven’t been quite on the

top of our game recently,” she said. “But if there is a time for this to happen, then it’s definitely now as opposed to later in the season.

“We had a really good get together on Monday night and talked about a few things so hopefully we are back on track.”

Celtic currently sit in a tie for third on the points ladder for the competition, with four wins from five matches record, they share their position with tonight’s opposition Saints.
