Wastebusters scores contract BY LINDA CLARKE

Wastebusters Ashburton has won an important contract to collect recyclable soft plastics from South Island supermarkets. Manager Sharon Breakwell said details were under wraps until the new supermarket-based recycling scheme was launched next month but Wastebusters Trust would be responsible for collecting plastic bags and soft plastics from initially 35 supermarkets around Canterbury. Staff at the Ashburton depot would sort the plastic, bale it and ship it to Melbourne for further processing. The scheme has been set up by Government’s Packaging Forum with the support of supermarkets. Shoppers will be able to take their unwanted plastic shopping bags and
other soft plastic, like frozen food bags, plastic wrap, muesli bar wrappers and other soft plastics, and drop them off at specially provided bins at participating supermarkets. Mrs Breakwell said Wastebusters was chosen for the work because of its community-based work educating people about recycling and reducing waste. The soft plastic will initially come from 35 supermarkets, but grow to 50. Wastebusters would sort the material at its McNally Street site using existing staff, but there was potential for more jobs to be created as the number of participating supermarkets and volume of soft plastics being recycled grew. “The soft plastics will open doors for us.” She said the contract was also important for Wastebusters if it wanted to be considered a viable partner for the Ash-
burton District Council. The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park contract is about to be renewed and Wastebusters is encouraging council to split the work into three parts; rubbish pickup, recycling and education. Mrs Breakwell told councillors considering submissions to the annual plan yesterday that Wastebusters had reinvented itself since losing the council contract six years ago. Splitting the contract would give Wastebusters a chance at pitching its specialised skills to help the community on its journey to zero waste. She said losing the contract had actually done the organisation a huge favour, and it had refocused on what was important and learned to run a lean business. “We are committed to giving back to our community and have a vested interest in reduce, re-use and recycling.”
