Support for $45m build

Early indications are that public opinion is hanging heavily in favour of a $45 million investment in building Ashburton’s new library and civic centre.

The Ashburton District Council plans to build the new complex on Baring Square east and has come up with three proposals, ranging from $39m to $53m. Its preferred option is for a $45m build, option one. In each of the four options the library area increases in size and services as the cost rises.

Public consultation on the project opened with two community meetings last week. Submissions are now open until April 14.

By Friday afternoon eight had been received and support was overwhelmingly for option one at $45m, but some submitters wanted elements of option two, the $53m version included.

While the $53m option was too expensive and included things the community could do without, the enhanced energy efficiency features that were only part of this option

should be included in whichever final option was changed.

“Ignoring climate change reality and the inevitable consequential increases in energy costs is very poor long-term planning,” the submitter wrote.

Another submitter supported option one, but wanted the council to cut out any features that might over lap with facilities that could be available at Ashburton College when it was rebuilt.

The submitter supported an investment in providing facilities and activities for

teenagers in the new library.

The council needed to make sure it did the job correctly from the outset rather than half compelte the project only to add to it further down the track. He used the EA Networks Centre as an example. This submitter favoured a mix of options one and two.

Terror from Behind the Lens TV1 news reporter and Ashburton Guardian columnist, Donna Marie Lever, has been at the epicentre of the events surrounding the March 15 terror attack in Christchurch. She shares, in a Guardian exclusive, her thoughts of the past 10 days.

L

ike many of you, I was also some 90 kilometres away from Christchurch as New Zealand and the world changed forever.

But probably unlike many of you, I was then called in to help in the daunting and overwhelming task of trying to report it, trusted to tell the compelling stories of those involved.

To be honest, you would have seen a lot more of the coverage of this than me.

I was somewhat in a bubble.

My task was to head to court and eyeball the alleged gunman. He eyeballed me back.

While it’s vital the court process is transparent and open in New Zealand, I’m glad no-one saw his face, that no-one saw his eyes, and I hope you never do.

The world’s media had descended on Christchurch.

Some 45 foreign and local journalists and their crews jammed into the closed courtroom that day – led there under tight security in groups of six after being body scanned and searched at the door.

The BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, all of the Australian networks, a guy from Poland – they are the ones I remember as I scanned the room, but there were so many more.

In the minutes, hours and days that followed I spent long days with first responders – hearing their stories – from police to paramedics and members of the public all immediately on the scene, all trying to help prevent further loss of life – and they really did. It was strangely uplifting, as tears flowed, both theirs and mine.

I’ve never embraced, hugged or sobbed with as many people as I did in the days that followed.

They made a difference and they saved lives, they are phenomenal heroes – and here I was – given the utter privilege of helping them tell their stories.

And let me be clear . . . these were all people who wanted to talk, who wanted to tell their stories, and who wanted you to know just what they did.

They didn’t want recognition, they didn’t want glory, but they simply wanted to talk. There were so many stories and I was the tiniest piece of a huge network. The scenes in Christchurch were simply surreal. The grass verge next to the hospital was coned off and lined with live crews and reporters

crossing in to the various bulletins from across the globe.

I’ve never seen anything like it in 20-odd years as a journalist.

I’ve covered disasters before, like severe weather events, earthquakes, the Boxing Day tsunami, unrest and civil war in countries – but this is so very different and it felt different.

1News threw every possible resource at this, as did many other media networks – there was a cast and crew of hundreds both in front and behind the lens as rolling coverage began.

I just asked a few questions, but spare a thought for the cameramen and women rolling on these pictures, the teams sitting in studios cutting pictures together, the producers and subeditors looking over every word.

I am in awe of all of them, it was not easy, but such a vital part of letting this country know what happened. And I’m ok . . . I’m very ok, because I have support from my amazing team, and because I get to go home and hug my family, cuddle my kids, when many have been robbed of that chance.

TVNZ has offered all staff support if needed, and if or when I do I will talk to someone.

You should too – you didn’t need to be in Christchurch that day, or spend hours at a cordon, or know a family involved to feel the anger, the hurt and despair many are going through right now.

So here we are, 2019, when a week ago the biggest story in Canterbury was the measles outbreak and now we are forced to face the unthinkable.

That a gunman stormed our streets, our places of sanctuary, taking with him part of our community that wasn’t his to take and attempting to incite hate.

What I’ve seen in Christchurch is quite the opposite, so much love, unity and hope has risen from the ashes of this act of terror, and this is just the beginning. Kia kaha.

“I think the exterior design of the building should be of high importance as often this is the only part of the building some people experience. It needs to be more than a concrete or glass box with small embellishments. I think environmental impact should be a

major consideration in a modern public building.”

While the site has already been decided, another submitter who wanted $45m option one, wanted this to be built in the centre of town.

Only one submitter was keen on

the cheapest build, option four.

This would see a new civic centre built in Baring Square east, but the current library retained and strengthened. The reasons were that libraries were now used less and building a new one would be a waste of ratepayers’ money.

Further tragedy for man’s family

The Tinwald Reserve Board has celebrated the opening of its new lodge in the Tinwald Domain by gifting a weekend’s accommodation to families of Christchurch’s Muslim community.

As he declared the lodge officially open on Friday night, board chairman Alistair Wing said the gesture of friendship and support was something the board wanted to do to support that community as its members struggled to come to terms with the mass shootings in two Christchurch mosques on March 15.

Opening day had been a long time coming for the accommodation complex, Wing said, but the project had come in, if not on time, then at least it was under budget.

And he credited its project managers John Howe and Gary Thorne with keeping within the $1million build cost.

“This hasn’t been five minutes in the making. It was first envisaged in 2010 when we went through a series of development plans for the domain. The initial idea came from the board and we credit Andrew Dalziel (previous chief executive of the Ashburton District Council), he was the catalyst that enabled this to happen,” Wing said.

fully for events such as family reunions or even weddings, he said.

The complex contains eight self contained units and a se-

ries of bunk rooms. There is also a large communal kitchen and lounge.

It is sited in the new camping area in the Tinwald Domain.

This is to the south of the domain proper and has seen all camping activity move out of the domain and into the new dedicated camping area.

Kelvin Davis surrenders rifle to police Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and Tourism Minister, Kelvin Davis has surrendered a semi-automatic rifle to the police.

He told The Herald he handed the gun over to police earlier in the week, before Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced details of the ban on assault rifles

and military-style semi-automatics (MSSAs).

“Leadership and responsibility should start at the top,” Davis said. “My gun was handed into police early in the week. I owned a .22 semi-automatic rifle, with a 15-round magazine.”

Under the new law – which is

being rushed through Parliament under urgency – that type of gun would be made illegal.

Cabinet agreed to overhaul New Zealand’s gun laws when it met on Monday. On Thursday, Ardern announced a ban on all military-style semi-automatics (MSSA) and assault rifles in New

Zealand, as well as a ban on related parts used to convert these guns into MSSAs, along with all high-capacity magazines.

Davis’ weapon would have been made illegal, as it was a semi-automatic firearm capable of being used with a detachable magazine.

The mother of a Palestinian man killed in the Christchurch massacre has died of a heart attack after she came to attend his funeral.

Kamel Darwish, 38, a dairy farm worker from Ashburton and the married father of three young children, was killed in the Al Noor mosque. He came to New Zealand from Jordan last year to join his older brother. His wife and children had applied for a visa to join him.

His mother, Saud Abdelfattah Mhaisen Adwan, 65, died of a heart attack on Saturday, said an official from the Sydney-based Jordanian Embassy.

A family friend, Yaser Mohammad, said Darwish’s mother arrived from Jordan at the weekend.

“She came to attend the funeral. Apparently this morning she passed away because she couldn’t put up with the sorrow and sadness of losing her son.”

He said she had another son who lived here too.

Adwan is one of several relatives of those shot in the massacre to suffer a heart attack in the following days.

Mohsin Al-Harbi, 61, originally from Saudi Arabia, survived the initial attack, only to die in hospital.

His wife Manal was so distressed as she searched for him that she collapsed with a heart attack and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Sazada Akhter was seriously injured after being shot twice at Al Noor and her mother in Bangladesh was hospitalised after having a heart attack when she found out what had happened to her daughter.

Further tragedy struck the South Otago Muslim community on Wednesday when one of its members died in a crash while returning from helping relatives affected by the Christchurch terror attacks.

Mohamed Elmi, 49, was killed in a crash near Palmerston.

Water main project on hold

Rather than bankroll the project for several years, Ashburton’s district councillors have opted to call a halt to a project that would make the town’s water supply available to sections on a proposed subdivision on rural Beach Road.

The council has carried out design work on the project that has already cost ratepayers $280,000 but with just two property owners committed to connecting to the scheme, council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said it was

not a viable proposition.

Last year the council received a request from a developer seeking a water supply for his subdivision. The property was divided into three lots, with one lot including an original dwelling. He wanted water connections for the two new lots.

Because it would not be feasible to extend a water main for just one development, Guthrie said he had asked the developer to talk to neighbours and see if they were interested in connecting to the town supply.

The council surveyed 16 prop-

erties and 11 responded saying they would support the extension. Out of those only two said they would connect immediately and that, Guthrie said, meant the council would need to bankroll the project until others decided to join the scheme.

He told councillors at Thursday’s service delivery meeting that while he would like to support the extension because the council was committed to providing potable water to all residents, the council could be required to carry the costs for the non-connecting properties for

well into the future. The project was different to Buckley’s Terrace where there were many existing properties. Only two of those had not yet connected and that left the council with only a small debt to carry. In Taits Road shallow bores that were going dry was the driver for requesting a water main extension, he said.

Councillors were divided on the issue with six voting to proceed and six voting to put the project on hold. Stuart Wilson was forced to use his chairman’s casting vote and the project will not proceed.

Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre

In brief Business booming Business is booming at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre with both the pool area and stadium under pressure.

Stadium books are high with very limited spaces available in the venenings from early March into the winter season, facilities manager Steve Prescott said. Pool bookings are also high with the Aoraki Swim championships in April. Swim school is at capacity.

A membership promotion run in February generated 98 new members for the centre.

More boards?

The Ashburton District has been well served by the Methven Community Board for many years, and mayor Donna Favel has signalled she could be keen to see more boards established around the district. At a hearing on Thursday over the council’s decision to reduce the number of elected members at next year’s election from 12 to 9, Favel said community boards were the voice for their community. “We’re still trying to work out how we can better engage with them as a council. A community board drills down and makes decisions at a community level but I’d like to see greater participation in council decisions,” Favel said. There was no desire to change the structure of the Methven board, but in the future the council could investigate other community boards for other towns in the district, she said.

Stadium fees set for second 15% rise

Fees in Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre stadium will rise by 15 per cent in July, to $41 for a single indoor court during peak times.

The Ashburton District Council went through a very public debate last year over stadium fees and faced a wall of opposition

when it proposed to hike fees by around 40 per cent, from $32 to $44 in one hit for single court hire.

The major fee rise was proposed as part of the council’s plan to increase user contributions to the cost of running the stadium from 40 per cent to 50 per cent.

More than 200 people lodged formal objections to the fee rise

and the council came back with a compromise – a staged increase over three years – 15 per cent, 15 per cent and then 10 per cent.

Fees for single court use this year are $35 at peak time and next year will rise to $41.

The following year’s scheduled 10 per cent increase will push the cost of hiring a single court up to $45 for the 2020/2021 year.

There are significantly lower charges for court use between 6am and 3pm weekdays, but they are subject to the same rate of increase.

Next year off-peak court charges will rise to $28.

Most charges to use the swimming pool complex and for complex membership will be unchanged from July 1.

Two experienced flight instructors have died following a light aircraft crash in the Kaimanawa Ranges, police have confirmed.

The plane’s wreckage was found yesterday in steep terrain after being reported missing on Saurday night.

The bodies of two men have now been recovered, police said.

Earlier, the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) said it had opened an investigation into what it calls an “aviation accident” in the Kaimanawa Ranges in the Central North Island.

The Diamond DA42 Twin Star aeroplane was last seen on radar about 22 nautical miles south-southeast of Taupo.

A search team found the small plane, which was carrying two experienced flying instructors, yesterday.

The Commission has appointed a team of three investigators. They are expected to arrive at the site today.

The audit of recycling wheelie bins continues around the Ashburton District with a significant improvement in the quality of recycling material being collected.

In December contamination levels stat at 22 per cent with most of this glass. By January this had dropped to 6 per cent and last month sat at 4.7 per cent.

Remembrance service Two weeks after the terror attacks in Christchurch, a National Remembrance Service will be held in Hagley Park to pay tribute to the 50 people who lost their lives.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the service will be held at 10am on Friday. It is expected to be attended by thousands, including foreign dignitaries and at least one member of the royal family in the UK. Ardern said considerations are being given to simultaneously broadcasting the service to events in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, and providing links for events in other towns and cities.

Since the attack on two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, tens of thousands of Kiwis have participated in vigils across the country, and overseas. The Al Noor mosque, where 42 people were killed by the gunman, is opposite Hagley Park. It was reopened yesterday.

A career on the land Environment Canterbury’s new land management advisor for Ashburton has covered plenty of ground in a diverse career on the land.

Lachie Ashton has been a musterer, a truck driver and sold real estate and now he is on the ground in Canterbury to work with farmers in the Ashburton District, the Kaituna Valley and the area areound Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.

The flexibility of the job also means Ashton has time to pursue his other love – multisport.

He recently competed in the Motatapu Marathon, achieving 44th position out of 450 competitors.

Ashton grew up on a 30000ha family farm at Waitahuna, a farming area between Milton and Lawrence in South Otago, and had dreams of one day owning a high country station.

After school, he worked as a musterer then real estate agent, selling everything from farms, holiday homes and businesses, such as Coronet Peak Station.

“That gave me enough money to buy 2300 hectares in Australia. The goal there was to build enough equity to come back and buy a high-country property,” he said.

However, one of Australia’s worst droughts occurred during the time Ashton and his family

lived there, causing him to have to destock and get other work outside farming.

After five years, and eroding equity, he sold up and returned to New Zealand.

“Even though it was a real struggle, we still enjoyed the experience. We bordered a national park and wildlife in the area was quite significant. It was just tough financially and tough trying to build equity which was the purpose of going there. Instead it was just like going on an expensive holiday.”

Back in New Zealand, he studied part-time towards a Bachelor of Information Technology degree while looking after his children.

He and his wife moved to Canterbury four years ago, Ashton still hoping to get a manager’s position on a high-country station.

“But I found that at my age, it’s not that easy to get,” he said.

But working with farmers as a land management advisor for Environment Canterbury in the Selwyn and Ashburton zones is the next best thing, he said.

“I said in my interview, I don’t want to spend my time having disputes with farmers, I want to help them, and that’s the appeal of the role, that it’s about helping farmers to take action and do what they need to do to comply with the rules.”

Methven dog park inching closer

Since the idea of a dog park in Methven was first suggested, a whole generation of local dogs have come and gone and the park is still on the drawing board.

However, last week, a place for Methven’s dogs to call their own took a hefty step forward with Ashburton district councillors agreeing to proceed with an application for a notice of requirement (NOR) for a dog park on

council-owned land in Dolma Street.

The Methven Community Board asked for a park to be established in 2009 and an application for a resource consent was lodged in 2010.

That consent was granted but with a raft of conditions that were so onerous it did not proceed.

The council decided in july last year to proceed with a NOR and consulted neighbours of the park. One was concerned about their

privacy and safety and potential noise.

A landscape plan has now been prepared and appropriate fencing is in place to keep the area secure.

For the council, environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said, the dog park was just part of providing amenities and services for the community’.

The NOR will be considered by an independent commissioner who will then make a recommendation to council.

■ RAIL SAFETY WORK

Temporary closure for SH79 at Rangitata If you’re planning to travel to Geraldine or inland points south next weekend, motorists need to avoid taking a route that includes the railway crossing on State Highway 79 at Rangitata.

The crossing will be temporarily closed, with detours in place, over the last weekend of March 30 and April 1 for safety improvements.

The NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail will be replacing the railway tracks on the crossing and renewing the road surface to make it smoother and safer to drive across. Signs and markings around this crossing will also be upgraded.

These improvements are part of the Government’s $1.4 billion three-year Safe Network Programme, delivering safety improvements on high-risk routes across New Zealand. The Safe Network programme focuses on safe roads and roadsides, safe and appropriate speeds, and safe railway level crossings.

The crossing will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians for this weekend work.

There will be detours in place from 7am, Saturday March 30 until 6am, Monday April 1, while the work is underway.

People who plan to travel on SH79 between SH1 in Rangitata and the intersection at Geraldine Arundel Road will be affected.

This is a main route to Aoraki/ Mount Cook.

Drivers heading south will be diverted at Hinds onto Hinds Arundel Road to connect with SH72. Northbound drivers will be diverted at Orari onto Orari Station Road to connect with SH79 at Geraldine. The alternative routes around the closure will be clearly signposted.

Cruise ship evacuated

Rescue workers off Norway’s western coast are evacuating 1300 passengers and crew from a disabled cruise ship by helicopter, winching them one-byone to safety as heaving waves tossed the ship from side to side and high winds battered the operation.

The Viking Sky issued a mayday call as bad weather hit and engine problems caused it to start drifting toward the rocky shore, the Norwegian newspaper VG reported at the weekend.

Police in the western county of Moere og Romsdal said the crew, fearing the ship would run aground, managed to anchor in Hustadvika Bay, between the Norwegian cities of Alesund and Trondheim, so the evacuations could take place.

Rescue teams with helicopters and boats were sent to evacuate the cruise ship under extremely difficult circumstances, including gusts up to 38 knots and waves over eight metres. The area is known for its rough, frigid waters.

Norwegian public broadcaster NRK said the Viking Sky’s evacuation was a slow and dangerous process, as passengers needed to be hoisted one-byone from the cruise ship to the five available helicopters.

“I was afraid. I’ve never experienced anything so scary,” Janet Jacob, among the first group of passengers evacuated to the nearby town of Molde, said.

She said her helicopter ride to safety came amid strong winds “like a tornado,” prompting her to pray “for the safety of all

aboard.” The majority of the cruise ship passengers were reportedly British and American tourists. About 180 have been evacuated so far, according to rescue officials.

Per Fjeld of the Joint Rescue Center Southern Norway said there is no danger to the remaining passengers and the airlift can accommodate all of them.

He said the rescue will speed up when there is better light and the weather improves.

Video and photos from people on the ship showed it heaving, with chairs and other furniture dangerously rolling from side to side. Passengers were suited up in orange life vests but the waves broke some ship windows and cold water flowed over the feet of some passengers.

American passenger John Curry said that he was having lunch as the cruise ship started to shake.

“It was just chaos. The helicopter ride from the ship to shore I would rather not think about. It wasn’t nice,” Curry said.

Reports emerged that a cargo ship with nine crew members was in trouble nearby, and the local Norwegian rescue service diverted two of the five helicopters working on the cruise ship to that rescue.

Authorities told NRK that a strong storm with high waves was preventing rescue workers from using life boats or tug boats to take passengers ashore.

A red alert has been issued for residents along the Pilbara coast to find shelter and brace for Cyclone Veronica’s destructive winds of up to 155km/h and wind gusts to 220km/h.

It hit the coastline of the Pilbara region between Dampier and Port Hedland yesterday morning.

The slow-moving system was downgraded to category three as it continued to move southeast at 8km/h, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said the rain and winds dramatically intensified within a short period of time.

“The rain has petered off a bit but it was belting down,” he said.

Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the strong southerly winds reached 120km/h and caused vegetation damage and destroyed a shed.

The Departments of Fire and Emergency Services’ urges residents in red alert zones to seek shelter in the strongest, safest parts of their homes and to stay clear of doors or windows.

Rescuers in eastern China have pulled a survivor from rubble, days after a massive explosion at a pesticide plant killed at least 64 people, flattening nearby buildings and shattering windows more than two kilometres away.

Officials said more than two dozen people were still missing and hundreds had been injured in Thursday’s blast at the Chenjiagang Industrial Park in the city of Yancheng, in Jiangsu province on China’s east coast.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation, but an editorial in the China Daily newspaper said it was likely to be identified as “a serious accident caused by human negligence”.

The company, Tianjiayi Chemical Co – which produces more than 30 organic chemical compounds, some highly flammable – had a history of safety violations and had been punished repeatedly, state news agency Xinhua said.

A team from China’s cabinet, the State Council, “pledged to leave no stones unturned” during the investigation and said those found responsible would be held to account.

It called for tougher supervision over the production and storage of hazardous chemical substances and strengthened enforcement of safety regulations, Xin-

hua said, ordering a “comprehensive” check of safety hazards in diverse industrial sectors, it said.

At the Xiangshui People’s Hospital, one of more than a dozen in the area tending to survivors, the ward corridors were filled with temporary beds for the wounded.

“I was just going to collect my wages when it blew up,” said a worker who identified himself as Zuo, whose home close to the plant was destroyed by the blast.

“I don’t even have a home to go to now,” he said, his head covered in bloody gauze.

The hospital was relying on dozens of unpaid volunteers.

“No one is thinking about how people will pay their medical bills at the moment – the priority is rescuing them and worrying about fees later,” said one volunteer identifying himself by his surname Jiang, who was sent to help out at the hospital by his employers.

After the blast in Yancheng, police sealed off roads to what was left of the devastated, smouldering plant.

Windows were smashed in the village of Wangshang two kilometres away, where stunned residents likened it to an earthquake.

Charles in choc factory Prince Charles has visited a chocolate factory. The prince and Camilla were given a colossal hamper full of goodies to mark their visit to House of Chocolate in Grenada’s capital St George’s, the fifth stop of their tour of the Caribbean Charles eyed up the chocolate liqueurs joking: “I might have to try some of that on the way back!” Chocolate educator Magdalena Field told the couple the story of how chocolate is made. The couple were then given some cocoa tea to try, but seemed surprised at the bitter taste.

They were then given a whole selection of chocolate samples to try, which they enjoyed.

High odds for a girl The world is waiting patiently for the arrival of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby in late April. To be expected, Baby Sussex’s gender is not yet known to the world. But according to a popular betting site, it has been deemed much more likely that the Duke and Duchess will be welcoming a baby girl rather than a boy. The Daily Mail reported that online gambling company Betfair, revealed the odds for the unborn child to be a girl are officially at 1/2. That means, in booking terms, it’s twice as likely the baby will be a girl than a boy.

Tears guaranteed Kaley Cuoco is certain she’s going to cry when she films the final episode of The Big Bang Theory. The 33-year-old actress has played Penny since 2007 and she has admitted the last shoot on the Season 12 will be very emotional for everyone involved, and the team is going to do things slightly differently as tears in front of the studio audience are more than likely. Speaking to the ‘Daily Pop’ on E!, she said: “We’re actually going to pre-shoot the whole thing, so we’ll have shot it, and then we will have an audience taping. Places spark emotional connection

Pendarves, Eiffelton, Anama, Hakatere, Dorie, Rokeby, Chertsey, Waterton.

They are among Mid Canterbury place-names that roll off the tongue for some. However, most in New Zealand would never have heard of them.

But little corners of the district

such as these are being given new prominence through artwork created by Ashburton resident Julia Crosson.

Crosson has established Maps of Mid Canterbury, a fundraising enterprise selling framed collages.

The collages are of maps, with pictures relating to rural scenes, such as tractors and gumboots.

Crosson said after just one month of operation, she had sold many pictures, and they had generated a lot of interest.

People interested in buying them would study the various areas represented, and tell her about the times in their life they had been there.

“You never forget where you are from,” Crosson said.

“Everyone has their place of origin, it’s an emotional connection.”

Crosson is among a wide range of Mid Canterbury supporters of the Northern Christian Training Centre in Fiji. The school teaches important life skills, helping to lift its students out of poverty. Funds from the sale of her maps are going to the cause.

■ VAN GOGH PAINTING

It’s a real van Gogh A painting at a Connecticut museum that has long been thought to be by Vincent Van Gogh has been authenticated as such by Dutch researchers.

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford has announced that the oil painting Vase with Poppies has been verified by researchers at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as having been painted by the Dutch artist in 1886, just after he moved to Paris.

It has been in the museum’s collection since 1957.

Its authenticity was called into question in 1990 by art historian and Van Gogh expert Walter Feilchenfeldt, who raised concerns about many purported Van Goghs around the world, the Hartford Courant reported. The artwork was taken out of museum displays and shelved.

Years later, with advances in technology and knowledge of Van Gogh, the museum decided to revisit the question.

It was examined initially at the Atheneum, where a digital X-ray revealed an underpainting that looked like a self-portrait, which added to confidence about its authenticity.

The museum in Amsterdam analyzed the artwork’s paint, materials and style to conclude it was indeed done by Van Gogh.

“One can say that slowly but surely, real progress is being made in Van Gogh studies. Some of these floaters even turned out to be firmly anchored in Van Gogh’s oeuvre, and Vase with Poppies, I am happy to say, is one of them,” said Louis van Tilborgh, a senior researcher at the Van Gogh Museum.

The artwork fits stylistically with other floral paintings he made shortly after arriving in Paris.

The Atheneum now officially has two Van Goghs in its collection. The other is a self-portrait painted in 1887.

Vase with Poppies will go back on display in April.

Ardern rises to the challenge O

ften through turmoil, true leaders are born.

One only has to think back to post earthquake Christchurch to remember that almost calming image of then Christchurch mayor, Bob Parker in his high-vis orange jacket, assuring his city and the wider region that at some point in time everything would be alright.

It’s how those people react in a situation where the pressure is mounting and the majority are looking toward them for guidance that a leader can really make their mark.

Come what may over the coming weeks and irrelevant of political bias or favouritism, it’s hard to find too much fault in the

way our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has handled herself in the wake of the Christchurch tragedy.

She’s been at the forefront of everything – setting the example and showing the direction and New Zealand, as a whole, has largely followed her lead.

When she first came to the role of Prime Minister, there were

questions raised about her mettle and ability to deal with the tricky and delicate situations, but Ardern has risen to the demanding challenge of the past 10 days and done so with a manner which has endeared her to many corners of the world.

I must admit that it’s not something I have paid close attention to over the years, but I would imagine that not many other world leaders have had their image portrayed on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa and that show of recommendation is real indication of the power in which the world is currently feeling and seeing our country’s leader.

Not everyone will agree with what Ardern has said, decided

and pledged over the past 10 days – but no one is ever going to fully agree with a political leader no matter what they might achieve in their time in office.

But it’s more how someone reacts, how they portray themselves and how the endear themselves to others that will form most opinions and Ardern has hit the nail on the head, it would seem.

Images of her hugging, crying and showing remorse beyond comprehension have been beamed across the globe and it’s those images from which many who know little about our great country will draw their own opinions.

Anything that puts New Zealand in a good light, is a good

thing at the moment.

But Ardern’s work is only just beginning.

She will continue to be marked and scored on her efforts and words over the coming weeks, months and years in relation to what happened in Christchurch.

Already we have seen, both rightly or wrongly, a fierce determination not to sit on hands.

Decisions are to be made and they need to made quickly and Ardern seems intent on ensuring that’s the exact manner in which things happen.

Her only caution – don’t be too hasty.

Decisions for the sake of decisions can sometimes cause more harm than they do good.

A nation united I

’m sure like many of you, in recent days I’ve experienced countless conflicting emotions. Love and anger. Despair and hope.

Last week I heard a comment that summed it up well: “Everything has changed, but nothing has changed.”

It sounds counterintuitive.

Everything did change on March 15. The illusion of our isolation, that we were somehow protected from harm, has been shattered.

But our response hasn’t. It’s been uniquely kiwi. Outpourings of love and kindness, not just for our Muslims brothers and sisters, but across the community.

I’m not sure that would happen elsewhere. History shows us it doesn’t.

Terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom and United States have created widespread fear, suspicion and hate.

Politicians often don’t help.

The US has become increasingly polarised in the past twenty years, not helped by an electoral system that rewards ideologues and drives out moderates.

Where a disagreement between a President and Congress leads to the Government being literally shut down for five weeks

and hundreds of thousands of employees working without pay.

Where the mere hint of gun reform leads to a blitz of advertising and lobbying, and depending on your position, a drying up of campaign contributions.

For a member of the lower House of Congress up for election every two years, and needing to raise more than $10,000 a week while they’re in office just to get re-elected, it’s a daunting prospect.

Even Britain, from where we imported our Westminster system, politics is gridlocked.

In 2016 the UK voted to leave the European Union and nearly two years ago formally triggered negotiations, and still they’re no closer to knowing the terms of their departure.

Both Labour and the Conservatives are hopelessly divided, incapable of even considering a

bipartisan solution that would put the country first.

Here we don’t have that. Yes, we disagree on much. Drug reform, a Capital Gains Tax, the need for investment in infrastructure; all issues we have debated in recent months. But the politics of those pale into insignificance when events like Christchurch occur.

Within hours of the attack, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges had put aside partisan interest and stood united, shoulder to shoulder in Christchurch to comfort those affected.

Within days, changes to gun laws were announced, backed in a bipartisan way by both National and Labour.

I accept that not everyone will agree with the changes. Within 24 hours of the announcement I had received more than 400 emails on this issue alone.

But changes need to happen. Nearly everyone agrees, for example, that Military Style Semi-Automatic (MSSA) firearms should go.

There are legitimate uses for some semi-automatic firearms.

Narrow exemptions will be made

for professional pest control, police, and the Defence Force.

Similarly, some semi-automatic firearms will remain more widely available, for example 0.22 calibre rifles and shotguns commonly used by duck shooters.

These aren’t the only changes we need to make. Simply restricting access to firearms won’t stop troubled people from becoming radicalised and turning to violence. There are worrying questions over what our security and intelligence services did or didn’t know.

As our world has become more connected through uptake of the internet and smartphones, so too do those agencies need the ability to keep tabs on those who wish to do us harm.

Without changes to the way potential extremists are monitored, we risk our country changing even more.

Pineapple upside down cake

440g can pineapple slices in juice 1/3 C firmly packed soft brown sugar 90g butter, softened ½ C caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1¼ C self-raising flour, sifted ■ Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease a 6cm-deep, 20cm (base) round pan. Line base with baking paper.

■ Drain pineapple, reserving 2 tablespoons juice. Cut pineapple in half.

■ Sprinkle brown sugar over base of baking upside-down prepared pan.

■ Arrange pineapple, just touching, over sugar.

■ Using an electric mixer, beat butter and caster sugar for 3 minutes or until light and fluffy.

Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition.

Brisbane, you little ripper

P

erhaps it goes with the territory, of being the little brother. While Sydney and Melbourne bicker about everything from who’s got the bigger population, better coffee or best football code, Brisbane is getting on with life and with living.

Queensland’s capital buzzes.

Look up and it’s in the tower cranes; look around and it’s on the street, in the lanes and along the riverbanks. Apart from Christchurch, you won’t find a Pacific city that is transforming itself as dramatically, or as rapidly.

Rewind six years and Brisbane’s prime real estate – the riverbank beneath the famed Story Bridge – was a rubbish dump of rusting, dilapidated warehouses and wharves at the end (or start) of the riverside boardwalk. No more: welcome the state’s hottest new dining and lifestyle precinct, Howard Smith Wharves.

The 3.5ha, $200m-plus redevelopment is about much more than bars and restaurants. Sure, there are plenty of those: Mr Percival’s, an octagonal bar and deck sits over the water underneath the bridge. The DJ and often musicians perform, literally, on the top shelf.

Felons craft brewery mashes and pours inside an 800-seat gastropub; Greca is a contemporary taverna; Toko a casual Japanese diner and Stanley a Cantonese restaurant.

Incorporated are a dozen “cutting-edge event spaces” from heritage buildings to outdoor spaces nestled under cliffs and green landscapes for pop-ups, weekend markets and concerts. Event venues and a boutique hotel, too.

CEO Luke Fraser emphasises that 80 per cent of the area is allocated to public space and designed to reacquaint locals with their waterfront – to walk, ride, scoot or sit and chill in the grounds. It extends beyond the riverfront, he says.

The most extensive is Fish Lane, running five blocks from the Southbank artery of Grey St deep into original suburbs.

Cafes, bars, artisans, street art line the cobblestones; don’t miss Wandering Cooks, a kitchen and outdoor dining-room for food entrepreneurs and wandering musicians.

Hidden near Queen St Mall is Burnett Lane, where you can kick-start the day with coffee in deep, dark Brew or brighter, breezier Felix, shop yourself silly, and come back for a late-night bar hop at the same places.

Brisbane is exciting already, but they’ve only just begun. The mega-project is the $3.6b, 27ha Queens Wharf redevelopment in the city’s heart, on the riverbank.

Now, promising to “change the face of downtown Brisbane forever”, are rising a casino, hotels, restaurants, bars, outdoor public spaces and foreshore, and a new pedestrian bridge to South Bank.

Scheduled for completion in 2022, the project is taking shape on the site of former government buildings between the city’s CBD and riverbank, reframing many heritage buildings.

The “little brother” can often surprise everyone.

Lions clip Eagles’ wings As statements go, Brisbane have made a massive one for the 2019 AFL season with a significant 44point win over West Coast. The Lions overhauled a 27-point quarter-time deficit to comprehensively outplay the reigning premiers for the last three terms and claim a 15.12 (102) to 8.10 (58) win at the Gabba on Saturday. It’s the first time the Lions, tipped to be big improvers this year, have beaten the previous season’s premiers since round 12, 2009. Tinwald finished the Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade season on a high, beating Fairton in Saturday’s final round.

They headed into the final day with the post-Christmas competition title already wrapped up, so the 4-2 win over Fairton was the icing on the cake, but they didn’t have it all their own way, with three matches going to three sets.

Led by the man who the weekend before had wrapped up his first Gala Cup men’s singles title, Cameron McCracken, Tinwald won both of the doubles matches and two of the four singles matches.

McCracken teamed up with Pe-

ter Leonard to win an entertaining top doubles match, beating Fairton’s Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard 6-2 6-4 1-0 (10-5), while Tim Groves and Dianna Leonard beat Phil Crozier and John Leslie 6-3 6-4 in the bottom doubles.

McCracken then took on Cromie in the top singles and finished the season with bragging rights in hand, winning 7-5 6-3.

It was the third time the two had met on the singles court this season, and prior to that they’d shared the wins.

The number two singles pitted father and son against each other and it was Tyler Leonard who came out on top in another epic battle with his dad Peter Leonard, winning 3-6 6-2 1-0 (10-8).

Fairton’s second singles win came via Harry Dargue at three, who beat Groves 4-6 6-4 1-0 (103), while Tinwald wrapped up the tie with Dianna Leonard’s 6-3 6-0 win over John Leslie at four.

In the final day’s only other A grade match, Hampstead beat Allenton 6-0.

Connor Brosnahan and Rodney Pangilinan beat Bryn Looij and Ryan Watt 6-3 6-0 in the top doubles, and Neil Molina and David Bishop beat Matt Bubb and Jess Aldridge 6-1 6-0.

Brosnahan then beat Looij 6-1 6-3 at one, Pangilinan beat Jake Parsons 6-0 6-1 at two, Gareth Evans beat Watt 6-1 6-1 at three, and Molina beat Aldridge 6-2 6-1 at four.

The day’s other A grade match didn’t go ahead, with Southern taking the points after Methven was unable to field a team.

In the final day of A reserve, the Allenton Wekas needed a countback to get past the Methven Diamonds.

The Wekas eventually took it out seven sets to six, while the day’s other match between the Allenton Kakapos and Hampstead didn’t go ahead.

Earlier in the day, the junior interclub competition wrapped up for the season and a prizegiving was held at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, with a bouncy castle also on site to add to the fun and festive final day atmosphere.

French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe justified his tag as race favourite as he timed his sprint to perfection to claim his first Monument victory at Milan-San Remo.

With the field whittled down to a lead group of 11 riders after the Cipressa and Poggio ascents, Alaphilippe burst to the front with 100 metres to go and held on for victory. Vincenzo Nibali, threetimes world champion Peter Sagan and reigning world champion Alejandro Valverde were also in the small lead group that broke clear off the Poggio, but when a game of cat and mouse developed on Via Roma it was Alaphilippe who made the decisive move.

Big scalp for Thompson Australian Jordan Thompson has upset Russian prodigy Karen Khachanov in straight sets to reach the third round of the Miami Open.

Thompson proved too consistent for world No.12 Khachanov, dominating the Russian’s second-serve points to win 6-2 6-3. The 24-yearold Sydneysider, currently ranked 77th, will face Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, with a possible fourth-round clash against Kevin Anderson.

Barty trounces Stosur; Osaka, Williams out Ashleigh Barty has thrashed fellow Australian Samantha Stosur to reach the fourth round of the Miami Open as the glamour WTA tournament lost major drawcards Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.

In the second career meeting between world No.11 Barty and former US Open champion Stosur, the younger player showed

her dominance with a 6-0 6-3 win in 58 minutes.

“When I play against Sam, it’s all about trying to work my way into her service games.

“I was able to do that early and she gave me a couple of cheapies and I got on a bit of a roll,” said 22-year-old Barty, who next meets Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens.

The way toward the Miami title

became less daunting for Barty when eight-times champion Williams withdrew with a previously undisclosed knee injury.

It is the second consecutive WTA event in which the American has been unable to continue after her retirement from last week’s Indian Wells event with illness.

Former world No.1 Williams showed no signs of injury while

winning her opener against Swede Rebecca Peterson 6-3 1-6 6-1.

Current world No.1 Osaka followed her out of the tournament, beaten 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3 by unorthodox Taiwanese 27th seed Hsieh Su-wei.

It was another setback for Osaka who won the last two grand slam titles, the US Open and Australian Open.

“I feel like I’ve dealt with the stress of people asking me (if) I have pressure because I have the No.1 next to my name,” the 21-year-old Osaka said.

“I thought I was doing fine with that, but I guess I’m not.”

Australian world No.40 Ajla Tomljanovic was also eliminated, going down to Estonian Anett Kontaveit.

In brief Tactix back in form The Tactix notched up their second win of the season yesterday, over the winless Northern Mystics in Nelson. After going up 1-0 in the opening minute, the Mystics conceded seven straight and only got within five goals at the end, losing 52-48 after a final-quarter comeback fell just short. The Tactix’ win moved them level with the fourthplaced Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic. Tactix goal shoot Ellie Bird was a dominant force, finishing with 44 goals on 52 attempts, including six of the seven they scored in just over four minutes early in the opening quarter.

Cantabs take bowls title Canterbury have won the New Zealand men’s inter-centre bowls title for a 12th time, in Auckland yesterday, defeating Nelson 2-1.

The clash was decided in a singles battle which went the way of Canterbury’s Andrew Kelly 25-24 over current world singles titleholder, Shannon McIlroy. With the final locked at one match apiece, it all came down to the singles game.

McIlroy led the singles 13-9 before Kelly turned the screws, drawing better and taking the advantage 22-14. Kelly, with his last bowl, got enough movement out of another one of his bowls to claim the second shot and the encounter after an umpire’s measure. - NZME

More woes for Wolves

Lachlan has eyes on the prize Lachlan Leadley had his eyes firmly set on the road ahead during the EA Networks Centre’s kids’ duathlon/triathlon yesterday morning. Leadley was one of around 200 kids who took part in the events which were based in and around the EA Networks Centre yesterday. The duathlon for five to six year olds was a 250m run, 1km bike and 250m run, while the youngest triathletes (seven and eight-year-olds) tackled a 25m swim, a 2.5km bike and a 1km run, and the oldest triathletes (11 to 13-year-olds) completed a 75m swim, a 2.5km bike and a 1.5km run.

The Lions have heaped more misery on the Sunwolves with a comfortable 37-24 victory in Singapore, a day after it was announced the Japanese side would be cut from Super Rugby after the 2020 season. Hooker Malcolm Marx scored a first-half brace as the Lions led 12-7 at the break, while Nic Groom, Elton Jantjies, Lionel Mapoe and Hacjivah Dayimani all crossed in the second half. Barnes opens up on ‘that’ game Rugby referee Wayne Barnes has broken his silence about his performance in the 2007 quarter-final admitting missing a French forward pass in their shock win over the All Blacks was the ‘most high-profile mistake’ of his career.

Barnes became the focal point for a nation’s wrath and resentment following his controversial refereeing performance in the 2007 quarter-final.

The Englishman sinbinned All Blacks centre Luke McAlister at a crucial moment of the game and

also missed a forward pass in the move that brought France the matchwinning try in their 20-18 triumph.

“I think, perhaps the most high-profile mistake was in 2007 when there was a forward pass in the lead up to a French try against New Zealand, the fallout from that was pretty huge,” he told BT Sport while reflecting on his career which will end at the World Cup this year.

“I think I was voted the third most-hated man in New Zealand

that year so it was pretty impressive!

“As a referee you never want to be in the headlines and whenever you are, whether you’re right or wrong, that’s not what you’re there for.”

Barnes reportedly received personal abuse and even online death threats following the All Blacks’ exit.

That was the first time the All Blacks had bowed out at such an early point in the tournament.

Since the incident New Zealand

have won the last two World Cup titles while Barnes has been rated one of the top referees in the world.

“I don’t blame Barnes, but I do blame the people who appointed the most inexperienced referee on the roster to a RWC quarter-final between the hosts and the favourites. I thought both teams deserved a referee with experience,” former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw said of the 2007 quarter in his book Open Side published in 2012.

Barnes said one of his career highlights was another All Blacks’ defeat - last year’s clash with Ireland.

“I was lucky enough to take charge of New Zealand v Ireland over in the Aviva Stadium back in November.

“There was a special atmosphere that day, there was something very special before the match and obviously during the match.

“There was a real sense of occasion to that game.”

In brief No support from Gallen Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has warned the NRL relocating a Sydney team to Brisbane is doomed to fail.

The NRL is due to deliver a report into the viability of adding a 17th or 18th franchise at the end of the year, with a second Brisbane team in the mix. NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg has said the competition is seeking greater power to move troubled clubs away from Sydney. Gallen said that, if the NRL wants a second Brisbane team, it must be a locally grown product and not a relocated club.

Yeo’s return defended Penrith have defended the decision to allow co-captain Isaah Yeo to return to the field despite picking up a second concussion in as many weeks on Saturday. Yeo appeared gone for the game when he copped a stray elbow from team-mate Sione Katoa just three minutes into their win over Newcastle. Fox Sports later reported Yeo was ruled out for the rest of the match, only to re-enter at the 29-minute mark. His re-insertion raised eyebrows given it came after the required 15-minute period to undergo a head injury assessment. However, it is understood there was a communication breakdown between the ground official and television producers, which led to the confusion. - AAP

Rose fires in another sizzler Sending a pitch through the air during the Mid Canterbury Softball senior mixed final on Saturday was Demon Renegades’ Rose Cockburn. Demon Renegades took on Fairfield in the final and won 18/3, to cap off a big day of finals at Argyle Park. Finals were held for the seniors mixed grade, the under-15 junior league and the under-12 little league. The under-9 t-ball players also had their final day of the season, but a damp start to the day meant that the youngest players didn’t take to the park, with early drizzle resulting in the under-7 t-ball being called off.

Hasler sees the positives The Sea Eagles may have fallen to their second defeat in as many games this season, but there could be light at the end of the tunnel with coach Des Hasler suggesting star fullback Tom Trbojevic is a “strong chance of playing next week”.

His inclusion for the game against the Warriors in Christchurch would be a huge boost after they looked lifeless in attack before they clicked into gear to score three late tries during Saturday’s 2618 loss at home to the Roosters.

The halves pairing of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kale Elgey failed to fire for 60 minutes, although the former combined well with Manase Fainu and Reuben Garrick in the final quarter of the contest.

Trbojevic’s impending return would provide the spark they’ve been missing in the opening fortnight, but even his inclusion won’t be enough if the Sea Eagles continue to waste their chances.

While the Roosters were clinical in the first half, Manly produced errors and repeatedly kicked the ball dead in atrocious conditions on the northern beaches.

While it’s too early to put a line through their finals prospects, they must address their issues ahead of clashes with the Warriors and Rabbitohs if they want to keep in touch with the top eight.

“There’s a few areas in our game that we need to work on and that’s our time and possession in field position.

“I thought we were a little careless in that regard

and that’s what they [Roosters] did well,” Hasler said. “They built pressure and it lasted and they were able to build points off that.

“We have to stay at the other end longer and execute better with the ball in field position.

“We know that if we can address those areas of possession and building pressure and aspects of our kicking game we’re a competitive outfit and it will happen.

“I’d like for it to happen a little bit quicker. There were plenty of good signs and with that we’ve got to turn it into points and start winning.”

Meanwhile Roosters coach Trent Robinson says the NRL must adopt AFL guidelines for playing surfaces after new recruit Brett Morris was helped off the field with a suspected MCL injury during his side’s win over the Sea Eagles.

Morris will have scans on his left knee after he landed awkwardly in a tackle as he backed up James Tedesco’s break in the shadows of halftime at Lottoland.

The winger’s knee got caught in the sodden turf as a large divot flew into the air.

It’s not the first time Morris has fallen victim to the Brookvale surface, with the veteran injuring himself when his foot sunk into the turf while playing for Canterbury there in 2015.

Morris’ injury was the only sour note as Luke Keary’s four first-half try assists killed off the contest before the Sea Eagles’ late comeback.

The Knights went toe-to-toe with Penrith for most of the contest but were outdone in a handful of key moments to lose by just two points. “Were they that much better than us?

Arrow heroics to no avail If Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan had the technology, he would make 16 clones of Jai Arrow. But since he doesn’t, he has urged his troops to draw on the herculean effort of his tireless lock during their 20-6 NRL defeat at the hands of Cronulla on Saturday. Arrow’s 299m effort in a losing side beggared belief as he time and time again attempted to inspire his side. To put his performance in context, since records started being kept in 1999, only three forwards have run for 300m in a game – Jason Taumalolo against North Queensland and Steve Price twice in 2007.

At the end of 2015, the New Zealand native was faced with a choice – keep plugging away on the Gold Coast or pack up his bags.

After trying out at Canberra, he made his way to Shark Park where he trialled in front of John Morris and landed a two-year deal. “It was a dream that I was chasing and I finally got a chance. It was pretty ballsy but it worked out.”

Earlier, Folau soared into another stratosphere to reel in another Foley high kick before sending Waratahs winger Cam Clark sprinting over in the left corner.

“He’s pretty good in the air,” Robertson said in awe after the Waratahs cast sentiment aside to shatter the Crusaders’ hopes winning a 20th straight match just eight days after their home city of Christchurch was rocked by the shocking terror attacks.

“It’s been a tough week but, look, we’re Crusaders; we don’t make excuses,” Robertson said.

“We were really desperate to play well and represent our peo-

ple and show just how much we care.

“And you could see how hard we worked, but I think we dropped enough ball for the whole season.”

The Crusaders hadn’t lost for more than a year, since a 25-17 round-five defeat to the Highlanders last season in Dunedin.

But after an unconvincing two-from-four start to their campaign, the Waratahs had a new game plan to use Folau’s aerial skills more in a bid to break down the best defensive team in the competition.

The tactics worked a treat, leaving coach Daryl Gibson and captain Michael Hooper with renewed belief that the Tahs could

mount another title challenge in 2019.

“It gives our team a lot of confidence to know we can compete with the best,” Gibson said.

In a poignant start to the night, the Waratahs and Crusaders entered the playing arena side by side before huddling together, coaches included, for a minute’s silence before kick-off to remember the 50 victims killed in Christchurch.

“It’s really neat,” said Gibson, a former Crusaders stalwart and assistant coach before linking with the Waratahs.

“I think that just transcends sport, to put that (rivalry) aside to think of others in far worse situations.”

The Waikato Chiefs ended their miserable start to the Super Rugby season with an emphatic 56-20 away victory over the Bulls as Damian McKenzie proved the inspiration and captain Brodie Retallick scored two tries. McKenzie’s line breaks and relentless probing of a sluggish home defence set up the New Zealand side for a first success of the season on Saturday, having lost their opening four games before drawing last week.

Robinson team celebrating Trainer Lance Robinson had plenty to celebrate at the completion of the racing action at Riccarton on Saturday after producing a perfect three-from-three result during the day.

Promising three-year-old Khimar War started the day off well when he stormed home late to snatch victory against his age group rivals over 1400m before two-year-old debutant Live Drama launched her career in style with an eye-catching run to win over 1000m.

Class performer Boots ‘N’ All made it a day to remember for Robinson when he took advantage of a superb ride from apprentice Corey Campbell to land his tenth career victory in one of the day’s feature events, the Seaton Family Memorial Hororata Gold Cup (1800m).

Robinson was quick to heap praise on both Campbell and the six-year-old Perfectly Ready gelding after the event.

“That was just an absolutely perfect ride by Corey,” he said.

“I told him before the race to be patient and not get to the leaders to early and he just judged it to perfection.

“He (Boots ‘N’ All) is just a little fella and he has been struggling a bit with the big weights.

“The 2kg claim made a big difference to him and once again he showed just how tough he is.

“He actually went a pretty good race at Otaki last time on a really patchy track, although on paper the result doesn’t look that good.

“He finished less than a length off Consensus, who went out and won at Moonee Valley on Friday night (Gr.2 Sunline Stakes, 1600m), so that gave me a lot of confidence he could win as his

“I think she will be right up there with the best three-yearolds around her next season.

“We will probably give her one more run this time in, then tip her out and get her ready for a race like the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in the spring.”

Winx crushes George Ryder rivals; retirement looms Chris Waller insists Winx will retire at the absolute peak of her powers – claiming he would never forgive himself if she were to be beaten next season – as the marketer’s dream clash with The Autumn Sun looks dead in the water.

The world’s equal best racehorse demolished her George Ryder Stakes rivals to record a stunning 32nd straight win and 24th group 1 success, Australian Turf Club officials now preparing for a heaving Randwick in her farewell at Randwick next month.

But a clash with star stablemate The Autumn Sun appears next to no chance after the colt scraped home in the Rosehill Guineas just 40 minutes earlier on Golden Slipper day, perhaps the last time he is seen on a racetrack.

Racegoers had hoped Australia’s best three-year-old colt would progress to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and a clash with Winx, but Waller hosed down that possibility on a red letter day for the country’s leading group 1 trainer.

“The best two teams can’t always meet in the grand final,” Waller said.

“You can see the difference between

the two of them when you see them on the same day. She’s fully mature and he is not.”

Waller remains in no doubt The Autumn Sun’s best days are still ahead of him despite chalking up a fifth group 1 win, but a decision on his immediate future is set to be made in coming days. And the possibility he will retire before Winx is one item to be discussed.

Such is her dominance, there remains a huge question mark over who will actually turn up to take on Winx in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes after she buried a field of George Ryder hopefuls, starting at the shortest price of her career.

So arrogant has Winx been in trampling opposition in her final campaign it has begged the question why connections wouldn’t forge on to tackle a fifth Cox Plate?

But when asked if he would forgive himself if Winx’s four-year winning sequence was to be broken during the spring, Waller said: “Never. As you know in racing it can happen.

“She’s at her best and she’s going to retire at her best.

“I think it’s the best way to go out.

“I’m sure she’s know what’s going on.

“Just a marvellous horse to work with and we owe it to her to be in this position.”

Hugh Bowman sat so, so arrogantly abreast of the George Ryder field he could have won by a far greater margin than the three-and-a-half lengths she had to spare from Brutal, one of seven horses which took on Winx for the first time.

“Although it’s a beautiful afternoon, the ground is significantly testing, and it was quite similar to how it was two years ago when she annihilated Le Romain,” Bowman said. “Because she works on the track she is very comfortable and has a lot of confidence on it. I think that helps her to perform.

“I would never have imagined in those days growing up that I would be riding one of the greatest horses that has ever lived.”

The TAB reported its biggest ever bet on Winx with one punter placing $345,000 on the mare at $1.05 just seconds before the barriers opened for the George Ryder to turn a profit of $17,250. It followed an earlier bet of $230,000 at $1.06.

Volpe Veloce keeps perfect record Class mare Volpe Veloce maintained her unbeaten record at Tauranga when she cruised to victory in the Gr.2 Windsor Park Stud Japan NZ International Trophy (1600m) on Saturday.

The five-year-old Foxwedge mare looked all at sea in her most recent start when finishing well back in the Gr.1 Haunui Farm WFA Group One Classic (1600m) at Otaki on a Slow8 track but back to the Dead4 surface at Tauranga she showed just what she is capable of in stunning fashion.

by The Mitigator, rider Michael McNab had plenty of horseflesh in front of him with 600m to run. McNab didn’t panic as he eased Volpe Veloce to the outside and sent his mount forward.

“He (McNab) didn’t panic and to be honest, that’s half the battle as well with her. It was a good effort and I’m just chuffed for her and all the owners.”

Richardson also confirmed that Volpe Veloce would now have another tilt at Group One level in the Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Te Aroha on April 6.

“She will be at Te Aroha in two weeks’ time,” he said.

“She’s been unlucky hence why we got over a mile (lately) as she just lacks that early speed, but what a run today.”

Volpe Veloce has now won all three of her Tauranga runs and takes her career record to twelve wins from 24 starts and $639,000 in stakes earnings.

Turning for home Australian visitor Endless Drama had shot to the front and looked hard to catch before Volpe Veloce hit top gear at the 300m mark.

She gobbled up Endless Drama in the space of two or three huge bounds before easing to the line to score comfortably from Watch This Space who dashed home late along the rail after being held up approaching the home turn.

Co-trainer Graham Richardson, who prepares the mare along with Gavin Parker, was relieved to see his stable star bounce back to winning form after some frustrations in her last two starts at Group One level.

“She’s a great chaser and everything panned out this time,” Richardson said.

Nowitzki on fire Dirk Nowitzki added one more memorable game in his final visit to Oracle Arena, scoring a season-high 21 points and insisting he couldn’t remember whether it was a chair or a trash can that he threw into a wall opposite the visitors’ locker room at one of his favorite arenas.

Luka Doncic had a triple-double and the Dallas Mavericks capitalised on Stephen Curry’s absence to beat the Golden State Warriors 12691 yesterday.

Nowitzki, 40, who is in his 21st and perhaps final season with the Mavericks, got a rare start and a rousing ovation from the Oracle crowd.

He came out and torched the Warriors with 10 points in the game’s first four minutes, and the Mavs jumped out to a 22-7 lead.

They never trailed in the game.

“The last few games I didn’t have a good shooting rhythm,” Nowitzki said. “Today, I had it early and often.”

Golden State dropped out of the top seed in the Western Conference to a half-game behind Denver.

With Curry resting, Kevin Durant had 25 points and DeMarcus Cousins scored 19. But the Warriors were 4 for 30 from 3-point range, while the Mavs went 21 of 49 from behind the arc.

“We just couldn’t pull together after that slow start and we never could get any traction in the game,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

“So we just kind of flush this one down the toilet and move on to tomorrow, not much else to do.”

Doncic had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists and Dallas ended a 12-game losing streak in Oakland, where it last won in April 2012. The Mavs built their lead to 43 early in the final quarter.

Nowitzki scored his first NBA basket at Oracle Arena, which is closing after this season, and some of his Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki (41) shoots as career highs and lows also came in Golden State Warriors forward Jonas Jerebko Oakland.
