Tribute to Walker Vin Diesel has honoured his late friend and co-star Paul Walker by naming his newborn daughter Pauline. The Fast and Furious star welcomed his third child with his longtime girlfriend, model Paloma Jimenez, earlier this month, and yesterday, Diesel revealed they called the baby girl Pauline as a lasting reminder of Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013. He tells US TV Show Today, “I named her Pauline ... There’s no other person that I was thinking about as I was cutting this umbilical cord. I just thought ... I knew he was there and it felt like a way to keep his memory a part of my family and a part of my world.” The news comes a week after Diesel got choked up while honouring Walker during a Los Angeles screening of their upcoming film Furious 7.

Criticism over crime reporting By daiSy HudSon

Rural areas are not a high priority for the government when it comes to reporting crime, Labour’s police spokesman says.

Labour Party police spokesman Kelvin Davis was critical of the government yesterday after police confirmed they did not have data for the number of Mid Canterbury calls to the Crime Reporting Line (CRL).

The Guardian filed an Official Information Act request to find out the number of Mid Canterbury calls made to the CRL. Introduced in Canterbury in 2012, the CRL gives the public 24-hour access to report historical and non-emergency crime.

At the time police said the CRL would see intelligence on crime trends fed back promptly, meaning staff could be deployed to target crime more quickly and effectively.

However, police communications centre national manager Superintendent Dave Trappitt confirmed yesterday that data is not collected at a local level, therefore making it impossible to know how many calls were received from the district.

Not collecting the data makes it difficult to combat and address crime, Mr Davis said.

He said collating “big, generic lumps” of information made it hard to know where to distribute resources, particularly in

smaller, rural areas.

“You would think they would have a better breakdown so they could tell you where, when, what sort of crimes were occurring, because then they could effectively address it and put resources in the appropriate place,” he said.

He also slammed the government over a lack of resources in small police stations.

“The police have had $300 million worth of cuts in the last five years, in real terms, so there’s going to be pressure on in certain areas,” he said.

“I just think that small, rural areas are not a high priority, and that’s a real concern for those of us who live in rural areas.”

Mr Davis believed there was no real urgency when it came to investigating smaller crimes.

“What we’re hearing is that there’s a lot of crime that isn’t really being addressed, it’s not being investigated,” he said.

“There’s not a real high interest in proactive policing in some areas. There’s a lot of people that are almost throwing their hands up in despair because they don’t really know how or where to report crime.”

Police Minister Michael Woodhouse referred questions to police yesterday, saying it was an operational matter.

Canterbury police did not return requests for comment by deadline yesterday.

Cricket fans glued to the match

Cricket fans stopping on their way through Hinds at the local tavern last night might have been surprised to see a strong contingent of South Africans.

As the Black Caps versus South Africa Cricket World Cup match got under way yesterday, members of Mid Canterbury’s small South African community had started to gather at the hotel.

They included the tavern’s managers themselves, Theresa and Charles Marshall, who immigrated from their home country to New Zealand nine years ago.

“I will support New Zealand in every other game it doesn’t matter who they play, but when they play South Africa, sorry, it will always be South Africa,” Mrs Marshall said.

As the game progressed the couple were joined by two other South Africans living in Ashburton, Renier van den Berg and Jonathan Davies, and were waiting for several more of their friends and family to arrive, including their three

adult children. Mr and Mrs Marshall were pleased to see South Africa on top in the game as they were surrounded by fellow supporters wearing their team’s colours of green and gold, but expected they would be outnumbered by Black Caps fans as the night got under way.

They did not expect too much rivalry.

“We are so friendly they will just love being with us,” Mrs Marshall said.

Meanwhile, groups of Black

Caps fans gathered throughout the district, hoping the match would result in the first ever semi-final World Cup win for their team.

Among them were Ashburton College first 11 captain Kieran Hunt, 17, and friends.

The odds might well have been against the team, but the group believed the Black Caps had a good chance.

“They used to be really bad at cricket so it’s good to see them doing so well now,” Kieran said.

Ratepayer money ruled out

Mayor Angus McKay says he’s prepared to throw the weight of the Ashburton District Council behind a community effort to provide social housing, but stops short of committing ratepayer money to a housing project.

While there were good stocks of Housing New Zealand properties available in Ashburton, Mr McKay said they fell short of meeting local need because they were administered on a national priority basis.

He says Ashburton’s rapidly growing economy is a big contributor to the housing shortage with a steady inflow of new arrivals putting pressure

on available rentals. While the council filled the affordable housing gap for people aged 55 and over with more than 100 means-tested properties tenanted, it did not believe it was the best use of ratepayer money to invest in buying or building social housing for younger individuals or families.

The Government is looking to quit a number of its state houses, hoping to sell these to community-based organisations to run and administer. It was looking at the Salvation Army as the most likely buyer, but this organisation has now ruled itself out of the market.

Local ownership would, however, ensure properties were administered locally and that in

turn would ensure locals were first in line for accommodation, Mr McKay said, but that ownership, however, could not come at ratepayers’ expense.

“The debate we have to have, is do people want to pay more in rates for what taxes should be paying for. There are people struggling already in their own homes to pay their rates, how far do we want to push that?”

For him it’s a big yes for more social housing in Ashburton but not from the ratepayer purse.

The solution might be obvious, but getting to that point was not; to move the Government’s social housing stocks into community hands and perhaps build more, it would need the involvement of a phil-

anthropic organisation to take this opportunity up and for housing to be owned and run locally, he said. “As mayor, I’d be really supportive of anyone or organisation who could bring this all together, but I don’t see it as a council responsibility. I’d be happy to be part of the discussions and I’d be supportive of it happening.”

Social housing was a community issue that needed to be driven by the community and the council would assist in any way it could if there was an organisation willing to pull such a project together, he said.

Scuplture being restored to its former glory The voluptuous curves and sensual crevices of Ashburton’s once controversial Love Me Tender are being restored to their former glory this week.

Ashburton art gallery communications/exhibitions assistant Nicole Bourke (pictured) and colleague Simone Barnsdale are painting the Baring Square concrete cast work in Baring Square East.

Love Me Tender was created by prominent Christchurch-based sculptor Llew Summers in 1994 and a couple of years later was bought by the gallery and installed at the park.

It attracted a variety of comments from Mid Cantabrians at the time, some praising its artistic value, others considering it was too risqué to be in a public park.

The statue represents a male and female in a passionate embrace.

Miss Bourke said the statue had a message of love and warmth.

“Maybe it wasn’t a piece that was loved by all initially but now it’s part of Baring Square East,” she said.

The statue was being painted its original colour of dark slate green.

Out of hospital The person injured during an Ashburton burglary has been released from hospital. Two Allenton streets were cordoned off and armed police were called in as the dramatic scene unfolded on Monday afternoon. The resident of the Woodham Drive property was taken to hospital via ambulance with moderate injuries.

A Canterbury police spokesperson confirmed yesterday that a scene examination has been completed, and the injured resident was released from Ashburton Hospital yesterday morning. Questions to police remained unanswered yesterday, including whether they were still seeking anyone in relation to the incident, how many offenders were involved, and whether any weapons were used during the burglary.

Aoraki extends its learning hubs Aoraki Polytechnic has extended its learning arm to Waimate with the opening of a new education hub last week.

Chief executive Alex Cabrera said the initiative was part of the polytechnic’s focus to reach the region’s smaller population centres, giving them access to quality, relevant tertiary education and training.

“Aoraki Polytechnic wants to offer more support to the smaller and more remote towns in our region, including Fairlie, Geraldine, and Twizel amongst others.

“We are working on the best ways to deliver programmes to these smaller communities, so are making changes to programme design and methods of delivery.

“This work is expected to bring about some positive changes for the rural communities this year.’’

The hub is based at the Waimate Community Centre and opens with the delivery of the first workshop – The New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management.

The opening of the Waimate hub follows on from the recent launch of the new Primary Industries and Trade learning hub in Ashburton.

The Ashburton, Hepburns Road learning hub sees two of the polytechnic’s key focus industries operate under one roof for the first time.

Chief Executive Alex Cabrera said the new location reflected the increased demand for training in primary industries and trades programmes. It was also a result of the polytechnic’s commitment to these areas in Mid-Canterbury, which were a huge component of the region’s success.

“Aoraki is committed to investing in areas of priority for the region, and where students will find jobs. We are focusing on supporting our community and meeting the needs of our region.”

Chemical dumped on roadside Fire crews donned protective equipment yesterday as they tackled a dangerous chemical spill near Dromore.

A person who allegedly dumped a large quantity of a potentially fatal chemical on the side of a road has been blasted by an Ashburton fire officer.

The Hazardous Materials Command Unit was called in from Timaru as fire crews worked for over four hours to clear a large spill on Stanley Road near Dromore yesterday afternoon.

Ashburton fire risk management officer Murray Cairns said about 20kg of a chemical used to kill grass grubs was dumped on the side of the road.

He believed the chemical was excess material from a contractor, who had then dumped it on the roadside.

A 250m exclusion zone was set up and fire crews donned chemical suits and breathing apparatus as they tackled the spill.

Mr Cairns slammed the person responsible, saying it was a “nasty” chemical.

“It’s not just carelessness, that’s just irresponsible behaviour by dumping a known dangerous chemical on the side of the road,” he said.

While it was not a busy road, he said the spill posed a serious risk.

He said the material could have been fatal if inhaled.

“It’s very dangerous stuff,” he said.

“It says not to wash it away, because it’s quite dangerous if it gets into waterways.”

Fire crews mixed the material with sand, let it dry, and then scooped it up.

Despite the significant risk the chemical posed, Mr Cairns was confident the area was now safe.

The move could be costly for the alleged dumper, in more ways than one.

Mr Cairns said the fire service did not attend hazardous substance incidents for free, so if found, the person responsible would be facing a hefty cleanup bill.

Prosecution could also be on the cards, although that would be up to the Ashburton District Council, Mr Cairns said.

He said both the council and Environment Canterbury would be notified of the incident in the next few days.

A contestant on the reality television dating show The Bachelor works for the company that screens the show. Matilda Rice, a viewer favourite, is an employee of MediaWorks that owns TV3 – the channel the show is screened on, Fairfax has reported. The show is produced

by Eyeworks, a subsidiary of USbased Warner Bros which owns the format, which is responsible for screening contestants. MediaWorks said the terms and conditions of the show excluded Eyeworks employees, not those who are employed by MediaWorks.

Medals to stay in NZ Les Munro, the last surviving Dambusters pilot, has spoken of his delight at raising more than $160,000 for a memorial dedicated to his fallen World War Two mates, while also being able to keep his historic war medals in New Zealand. Mr Munro, 95, had planned to sell his medals at auction in order to make a donation to London’s Bomber Command Memorial for its upkeep.

DOC not happy about weka release

App deals to roading problems

Weka may be on their way to a town near you, after the native flightless birds have been illegally released from the Lagmhor area.

Forest and Bird Ashburton supports the actions of the farmer and conservationist who released the birds, however the Department of Conservation is not impressed.

Media spokesperson Fiona Oliphant said yesterday that the department had no record of a proposal to translocate weka into the wild from farmer Russell Langdon. Mr Langdon held an authority under the Wildlife Act 1953 to hold eastern buff weka.

“This allows for the holding of weka but does not cover the release of weka into the wild, which requires separate authorisation,” Ms Oliphant said.

The department had no information about the release other than media reports, and would need to investigate.

“The department takes seriously any breaches of the Wildlife Act and the release of protected native wildlife without authorisation,” she added.

Weka are iconic Kiwi birds which have largely disappeared from the mainland, but they are well loved in places they still exist, despite their sometimes pesky and curious nature.

Lagmhor is only about 15 kilometres from Ashburton. Mr Langdon told the Guardian last week he had released up to 30 of the birds within the last couple of years. Neighbours had reported seeing them, and he believed they were beginning to establish themselves.

Forest and Bird Ashburton branch chairperson Edith Smith said Mr Langdon was a remarkable conservationist who deserved Ashburton’s support for his bird breeding efforts. He had established the Riverbridge wetland complex and native bird breeding programme “with a vision seldom seen in the Ashburton District”.

“That he has been so successful with the weka is testament to his skills. Weka moving into the wider community will help introduce neighbours to this native species that once were plentiful in Canterbury,” Mrs Smith said.

The Guardian was unable to reach Mr Langdon yesterday for comment.

A phone app that is being developed

by Ashburton College students could change the way roading problems are dealt with by the Ashburton District Council.

The project, driven by Business Mid Canterbury (BMC) will see an app developed that will allow people to take a photo, tag the location, leave a description of the problem and send the information to the council.

It’s a project that will be a winner for students and will result in the council receiving a roading tool that will provide it with up-to-date information on the state of the district’s roads at no cost to ratepayers, says BMC executive member Rene Artz.

Essentially it would see the community become the council’s eyes on the ground in terms of roading issues and

it would be designed so information was fed into the council’s system, with a reply generated to the person filing the information, he said.

The project has been applauded by college principal Grant McMillan who said it was a good example of a way that the college and the community could work together.

“We’re trying to do more and more of this. I’m thrilled with this and I’m sure there are a lot more collective projects we could be involved in,” he said.

The app development has an additional benefit as it will become a project for several students as part of a national technology competition. “The students are getting some good learning and they’re doing something they can enter in a competition too,” Mr McMillan said.

Council contracts manager Brian Fauth said he would watch with interest the development of the app.

A convoy of 19 tractors and their drivers make their way out of Methven yesterday, travelling at a maximum speed of about 28 kilometres per hour. It’s the same way the group, called the Southern Tractor Trekkers, has travelled throughout the lower South Island since leaving Invercargill on March 12. They travelled up the West Coast and over to Hanmer Springs and North Canterbury, coming through to Methven yesterday on their way to Geraldine. The group will now make their way south to finish where they began on March 28.

Tourist to pay $15,000 Buddy Holly will A German tourist who ran a stop sign and caused a crash that killed a Canterbury motherof-two has today been ordered to pay $15,000 in compensation to the grieving children.

Daniel Muller, 26, went through a stop sign at 60km/h before crashing into the driver’s side door of Stephanie Anne Ellis’ car on Goulds Road, near Springston, 25km south of Christchurch, on February 23.

Jeremy Ellis, Ms Ellis’ 28-year-old son, read a victim impact statement at Christchurch District Court yesterday when Muller was sentenced.

Mr Ellis spoke of being “still quite angry” at his mother’s death and was now nervous to

get behind the wheel. Although he felt anger towards Muller, he also felt some sympathy for him.

His mother had lived a “challenging life” but he felt she had recently been moving towards “the light at the end of the tunnel”.

Her daughter Rachel, 19, also felt sympathy for Muller who “has to live with this for the rest of his life”.

Muller, a master cabinet maker, earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving causing death. The court heard that Muller “unreservedly apologises” for the accident which had such tragic consequences for the Ellis family.

Easter cheer for those in need Families in need will be treated to a little Easter cheer in the coming weeks, thanks to Ashburton County Lions Club. Lions club service project members Helen Allan and Trish Campbell dropped off 40 colourful and creative Easter parcels to Presbyterian Support Ashburton manager Jackie Girvan yesterday. The parcels will be distributed to families in need in the lead-up to Easter. Mrs Allan said the parcels included homemade biscuits and fudge, Easter eggs, Playdough, balloons, face flannels, and a homemade iced Easter egg.

“It’s a nice gift to give out just before Easter,” she said.

never fade away Buddy The Buddy Holly Story Ashburton Trust Event Centre Autumn may well have been tickling us with her fingertips on Sunday, but inside the filled-tocapacity Ashburton Trust Event Centre the temperature increased significantly over two hours, as the life story of Buddy Holly unravelled.

Twenty-six years after the show was first staged in London, some 23 million people worldwide have been thrilled by the appeal of the story, that of a young man who believed in himself and had a strong vision of where he was headed with his music.

Time and again, the Texanborn lad stamped his own mark upon what was to become a unique presentation. Buddy wore thick-rimmed glasses on stage, was recognised by a signature vocal “hiccup” technique and used an instrument known as the celesta ... different to say the least, at that time.

Buddy Holly attempted success as a solo artist but this eluded him. However, the formation of The Crickets helped propel him to the top of the charts with singles such as That’ll Be The Day, Everyday, Peggy Sue and Not Fade Away.

1959 brought about Buddy’s split from the Crickets and he toured with Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). A performance on February 2 of that year was to be the last.

Transport at the conclusion of the performance venue in Iowa was to be a choice of airplane or unheated tour bus. The group drew straws.

and J.P. Richardson won the straws, but lost their lives when the plane crashed soon after takeoff, in a blinding snowstorm.

At the tender age of just 23 a young man with a huge personality and determination to succeed, left behind a massive impression on many musicians and to this day an annual Buddy Holly tribute still features at The Surf Ballroom in Iowa.

On Sunday evening a cast of 16 played out the story of Buddy Holly, with energy and enthusiasm.

Glen Joseph from Newcastle upon Tyne in England first played the role of Buddy Holly in 2009 and has since staged the same character worldwide. Glen’s portrayal of Buddy was passionate, energised and precise. Such a performance after completing a 48-week tour prior to beginning the New Zealand 21-venue trip can only be described as spectacular.

Supporting artists from various parts of New Zealand were perfectly matched to their characters, resulting in a show that became warmer and warmer as the evening progressed.

Rock and roll enthusiasts were well rewarded and displayed their appreciation of both music and visual action by exercising a few of their own body parts.

Dresses worn by the Jingle Singers were full skirted, satinlike and accompanied by the bouffant hair dos popular in those times.

Eyes closed … head back … ears open. Yes, Buddy Holly was in Ashburton. I could Rave On about the show, but those present know how good it was so I Guess It Doesn’t Matter Anymore. reviewed by Moyra Whiting

Housing becoming crisis As the cost of renting a house continues to rise, a growing number of individuals and families are finding they can no longer afford a place to live. And that is prompting a growing call for Ashburton to develop a social housing project. Reporter Sue Newman talks to people at the coal face of the accommodation crisis.

ith rents rising 15 per cent over the past two years, a growing number of Ashburton people are finding they can no longer afford to rent a home.

On line rental agency Trade Me puts the average rent in the Ashburton District at $350 a week, up from $300 two years ago.

For people on a benefit or those on low incomes, the gap between what was af-

fordable and what was available was growing.

And for some that meant the stark choice of paying rent or paying for food, Ashburton budget advisor Jeannette Molloy says.

While beneficiaries could apply for an accommodation allowance, even at its maximum, the gap between that and the cost of rental accommodation could still be too wide, she said.

“Quite often that forces them into something that’s old and cold and that brings its own issues.

There needs to be accommodation that’s affordable for low income families, for people on benefits and for single people on benefits.

This is where I’m seeing the real hardship.”

The Government was talking about finding solutions to the affordable housing shortage, but talk needed to translate into action, Mrs Molloy said.

“The need is now, not in three, four or five years, it’s an immediate need. So many people are really hurting.”

Traditionally the budget service’s clients had been individuals or families who needed help getting their finances back on track; now many of its clients needed a wide range of support.

“We’re here to help people learn to budget but now that’s the least of their problems.

point for some families Their problem is getting enough food on the table, let alone a day to day budget. WINZ send us people so we can help them balance their budgets but so many fall way short of balancing and we can’t pull money out of nowhere for them.”

With very few rentals available under $300 a week, low income families or beneficiaries had virtually nothing left at the end of the week for power and food.

“If your benefit covers your power, rent and food you’re lucky but it still falls well short of meeting all other needs. I try to encourage people to put aside $5 each week for unforeseen costs but for some that $5 is needed for food.”

For many there was also an ongoing paper war that could become quite soul destroying, she said.

“They have to verify everything and they’re sent from agency to agency. They can’t cope, it’s so demoralising and I’m seeing this more and more often.”

Late last year the budget advice service moved under the umbrella of Presbyterian Support on the back of security fears in the wake of the September shootings in Ashburton’s WINZ office. The organisation is now run by that agency’s manager Jackie Girvan.

The struggle to find affordable

rentals was common to clients of both organisations, Mrs Girvan said.

“We can be an advocate for our clients when they try to find rentals but it’s not an easy task.

There’s not enough housing, particularly if someone has blotted their copy book along the way.”

For people who qualified for Housing New Zealand properties, securing a home could mean moving out of Ashburton. Others outside this criteria were battling to find homes on the open market, she said.

And the housing shortage did not affect just younger people and families, there were many older people who could not afford to buy a home who were also struggling to find affordable rentals, Mrs Girvan said.

The Ashburton District Council had good stocks of elderly person’s housing but the turnover of tenants was less than five a year, she said.

“We need more accommodation, more social housing and we’re going to need more and more in the future. We need more houses and we need them now, but where does the money come from?”

One man’s housing battle

athie Withington knows first hand how tough it is for people on low incomes or benefits to find rental accommodation.

The Presbyterian Support senior social worker fights a daily battle on behalf of her clients, many of whom are forced to sleep in caravans, garages and, on occasions, cars while they do the rounds of supermarket noticeboards, newspaper advertisements and rental agencies.

On just one day recently she had three people in her office desperately looking for affordable accommodation.

It’s often a humiliating experience for many, she said, and for those who have to overcome prejudice because of a past brush with the law, a failed tenancy or, on occasion, their race.

She knows of 16 people are living in a three-bedroom house and others where a family with children endured a long stint of couch surfing.

“I had a family living in a caravan for months, now they’re in a bach. It’s probably draughty and cold, but at least it’s not a caravan.”

Fifty per cent of the people on her caseload have housing issues to some degree. And many of those cases tug at your heartstrings, many are in situations not of their own making and most are simply trying to get on with life, Ms Withington said.

Much as people in Ashburton might not like to admit it, there is often an element of prejudice when it came to letting houses.

One client who admits he has a chequered past and whose appearance reflects his rough years, is about to be homeless come Easter.

“He moved to Ashburton to be closer to his daughter, struggled to find accommodation that was suitable for his daughter to visit and struggled to find work. He kept at it, found the right job, something he was good at and then found accommodation – a studio unit in the country.”

The man thought his life was sorted until his wife died and overnight he became his daughter’s fulltime caregiver.

His studio was too small, his job unsuitable and he was back searching for another place to

live and another job, Ms Withington said.

He wants to stay in Ashburton, that’s where his daughter’s support network lives, but he’s running out of time to find a new home.

He answers advertisements, rings landlords, but the answers are always the same – “the house has been let; I’ll call you.” They never do.

“He reckons it’s because he’s brown, has got missing teeth and tats, but he’s got good references and they weren’t asked for,” she said.

Housing New Zealand is aware of his plight, Ms Withington said, but they don’t have any two-bedroom places available in Ashburton.

“He’s tired of the nightmare he’s living, but we can’t create a house to live in, a job or a fair go from prospective landlords,” she said.

And the man is just one among many who are beating a path to Presbyterian Support and other social agencies’ doors in their search for accommodation.

“I’d like to see a facility available to put people up in, emergency accommodation; but who will pay for such a facility and who would manage and take responsibility for it?”

Because Housing New Zealand stocks are administered by Work and Income on a national basis, Ashburton homes were often let to out-of-towners who were higher on the priority list than locals.

With the Government looking at selling off some of its properties, that would create an opportunity for those houses to be bought by a local organisation and administered locally and that could go some way towards easing the housing crisis, Ms Withington said.

shburton, in common with the rest of New Zealand, has a housing problem.

It comes in the disconnect between the rapidly rising cost of renting a home and the failure of incomes to rise as quickly.

Renting a house consumes a large slice out of any income; it’s prohibitive if your income is fixed or low.

Housing New Zealand provides thousands of properties across the country that are available at a lower rental, but unless you’re desperate, your chances of securing one of those are limited.

Because houses are allocated on a national-need scale, local properties are often let to out-of-towners whose need is judged more urgent and locals miss out.

In an effort to even the playing field the Government wants to sell off some of its state houses to community organisations, potentially a good outcome, providing waiting lists are administered locally too.

The deal comes unstuck, however, when it comes to finding an organisation able to come up with the cash.

The Salvation Army was tipped as the most likely buyer, but it has indicated it’s now out of the race.

In Ashburton there are more than 180 state houses dotted around town. Moving those into community hands would carry a clearly unaffordable, multimillion dollar price tag.

There’s a clear gap between the ideal and the unrealistic, but there is another way.

Rather than a wholesale sell off, let ownership of the properties remain in Government hands, but move the maintenance and the management of waiting lists and letting into the hands of the community through a publicly-elected board or management committee.

An annual maintenance grant from the Government to that board would ensure the properties were kept up to scratch and with the letting in local hands, local accommodation would meet local need.

I

f I was to ask you what services and facilities does council provide, what would spring to mind?

For some people the key local government services people are most familiar with are roads, water, parks and rubbish and recycling. But what’s often not as well-known in the community is the breadth of other activities and services provided by council.

Environmental health, economic development, cemeteries, public swimming pools, street lighting, weed control, tourism, information services, social housing, playgrounds, libraries community grants, town planning and building assessments, halls, sports fields and food safety inspections are just some of the many functions council is committed to delivering.

Sometimes the services provided by council can be taken for granted – or rather, we don’t actually stop and think “which organisations takes care of that?”

burton has a rates requirement of about $1800, roughly $5 a day. When you factor in all the council-provided services you can, and do use, in any given day all year round, it’s excellent value for a huge range of amenities.

Take for example, having a shower, filling the jug, flushing the toilet, heading to the pool for a swim, driving or cycling along the roads, having lunch in the domain, borrowing a book from the library, taking the kids to the playground, dropping your rubbish and recycling at the recovery park and much, much more.

We rely on these services and facilities to be available in order to maintain a certain standard of living for our com-

munity and I believe council is a prudent manager of your resources.

Elected members recently attended a Local Government New Zealand workshop on the importance of explaining what we do and why.

The focus of the workshop was how the country views local government.

What I took from the workshop was that the Ashburton District Council is making the right moves in the right direction. There are some things we can do better and we’re working hard on improving performance, particularly with communication and engagement.

Our performance in this area was commented on by the workshop presenters who were impressed with how we’re displaying our benchmarking performance to the community and staff through posters around the building.

Meteorite site found The largest impact zone from a meteorite ever discovered on Earth has been found in central Australia.

But the exact ecological impact of the meteorite - which broke in two before slamming into the planet over 300 million years ago - remains a mystery. A team of geophysicists found the “twin scars” during drilling for geothermal research in the Warburton Basin, near the borders of Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. While the crater from the impact has long since disappeared, evidence of the 400 kilometrewide impact zone was hidden deep within the earth’s crust. The two asteroids would have been more than 10km wide.

Gunmen kill 13 Gunmen have killed 13 passengers on a bus in southern Afghanistan, the latest attack hitting civilians in the country’s still-bloody conflict.

The killings in Wardak province, close to the capital Kabul, underline Afghanistan’s fragile security situation as President Ashraf Ghani holds talks in Washington. With the spring fighting season about to begin, Ghani has asked the US for “flexibility” as it pulls out its remaining 10,000 troops by the end of 2016. Officials said the motive for the attack was still under investigation.

Massacre museum to re-open Tunisia is aiming to restore faith in its tourism sector by reopening the National Bardo Museum less than a week after a jihadist attack there that killed 20 foreigners.

Museum officials said today’s reopening, which will be marked with a ceremony, was “a message” to the gunmen who killed the tourists and a police officer there last Wednesday.

“It’s a challenge but also a message ... we want to show that they haven’t achieved their goal,” museum curator Moncef Ben Moussa said.

The museum is due to reopen with a ceremony organised by the culture ministry, including a concert by the Tunis symphony orchestra.

Tunisia fears that last week’s carnage claimed by the Islamic State group - the deadliest assault on foreigners in the North African country since 2002 - will hit its vital tourism sector.

In a move aimed at restoring confidence, Prime Minister Habib Essid sacked the heads of police for Tunis and the area around the museum, after finding “several deficiencies” in security.

Essid, himself a former interior minister, “decided to fire a number of officials including the Tunis police chief and the police chief for the Bardo”.

A policeman in charge of security at the museum has been arrested, judiciary spokesman Sofiene Sliti said, without disclosing the charges.

The Bardo attack was the first claimed by IS in Tunisia after the militant group’s apparent expansion to strifetorn Libya from its Syria and Iraq strongholds.

US off-roaders seeking to rev up the four-wheel drive of a Jeep might soon find out that their American icon is made in Italy.

In a sign of what comes with the takeover of Chrysler by Italian giant Fiat, US auto dealers have begun selling the Italian-made Jeep Renegade.

The new Renegade, a small 4x4 SUV, was shipped to dealers last week, according to Todd Goyer, US spokesman of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The Renegade will hit showrooms nationwide in volume next month, with prices starting at around $US20,000 ($NZ25,340).

Jeep traces its roots back to 1940 when the US Army asked car makers to design a utility vehicle that could be used for scouting and which could move quickly.

Willys came up with the best design and the jeep - possibly a made-up word for G.P. (general purpose) - became the workhorse of the US forces in World War Two. It remained in production until 1982 and was used by armies all over the world until it was finally replaced.

For the motoring public, the jeep morphed into off road capable commercial cars like the CJ-5 and pioneering sports utility vehicles like the Wagoneer and Cherokee.

It is now a key element of Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s plans to expand globally, and the Renegade is tapping one of the hottest market segments, small SUVs. It shares a platform with other Fiat cars like the 500X and 500L and the Alfa Romeo MiTo. It will also be built in Brazil with components from Italy and the US, for local and export markets.

Netflix targets piracy

By Drew CratChley Forget bringing down Foxtel, Nine and Seven, Netflix’s main aim is to end online piracy in Australia.

The US streaming service says its entrance to the Australian market yesterday will not disrupt the traditional television industry, or even pay TV operator Foxtel.

Founder and chief executive Reed Hastings instead has his eye on ending the illegal downloading of movies and TV programs not screened by traditional broadcasters.

“We’re really focused on heading off piracy,” he said.

“There’s big piracy in Australia, and part of that is because there is not an easy, affordable service.

“What we have seen in Canada is as we grew, the amount of piracy declined, so that would be the hope here.”

He believes most people would prefer to watch TV and films legally, as long as the content is available immediately and at an affordable price.

‘Killer newt’ found A killer newt the size of a small car terrorised lakes and rivers during the rise of the dinosaurs, scientists have discovered.

The ferocious amphibian, a distant relative of salamanders living today, took the place of crocodiles as one of the Earth’s top predators more than 200 million years ago. Fossil remains of Metoposaurus algarvensis were found buried at the site of an ancient lake in southern Portugal, which may have been home to several hundred of the creatures.

“This new amphibian looks like something out of a bad monster movie,” said Dr Steve Brusatte, from the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences .- PA

Growth in the streaming industry has prompted Foxtel to

restructure its pricing policies and prompted all players to aggressively bid for broadcast rights for popular programmes including Game Of Thrones, Mad Men and Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

But Mr Hastings does not expect Netflix’s arrival to trigger Foxtel’s demise, even if the US giant achieves its long-term goal of reaching up to three million Australian homes.

“It’s not a substitute, people are not cancelling cable to watch Netflix,” he said. “Cable is 10 times more expensive, and we don’t have sports. We’re a supplementary channel.”

He also said the service works well at Australia’s slower internet speeds, and is confident internet data caps, a potential barrier to heavy users of streaming services, will continue to grow.

Captain’s camera nearly causes disaster Dozens of military personnel were injured when an RAF transport plane on its way to Afghanistan nose-dived 4400ft after the captain’s camera became lodged alongside the aircraft’s joystick.

The Voyager jet was around five hours into its journey from Brize Norton to Camp Bastion when the Nikon camera, used by the captain to take photographs on board, got stuck between the arm rest and the side-stick controller when his seat moved forward.

In 27 seconds of chaos the plane lost 4400ft in altitude, throwing passengers and crew without seatbelts towards the ceiling, injuring 33 of those on board, according to the report into the incident while one traumatised passenger was hospitalised with stress.

The aircraft, a militarised version of the Airbus A330200 passenger jet, was diverted to an airbase in Turkey after the incident on February 9 last year, and the state-of-the-art fleet was grounded for 11 days while the cause of the dive was

investigated by the Military Aviation Authority.

The final report into the incident, released last week, has now revealed that RAF captain had been alone in the cockpit and was taking pictures of the flight deck from his seat with the digital SLR camera in the three minutes before the plane dramatically plummeted.

The camera had been between his arm rest and the sidestick unit which controls the aircraft’s altitude, and became wedged in when his seat moved forward.

“The aircraft was cruising at FL 330 when the captain’s personal D-SLR camera was placed between his seat-arm rest and his side stick controller,’ the report states.

“Shortly afterwards, when he adjusted the position of his seat, the side-stick was deflected fully forward which resulted in the aircraft rapidly entering a steep descent. The captain who was alone on the flight deck while the co-pilot took a break, was unaware that his camera had caused the pitch down.”

The report states that the captain’s seat was moved forward around two minutes before the plane lost altitude, “creating a slight physical jam of the camera between the front of the armrest and the rear base of the side-stick”.

His seat then moved forward again, forcing the side-stick fully forward “and initiating the pitch-down command.”

The report author describes the incident as a “near-miss” and said there was a “realistic potential for the loss of the air-

craft and 198 of our people”.

There were nine crew members and 189 servicemen and women on board the flight, who had been served their meal and were enjoying the in-flight entertainment when when the plane suddenly lost altitude while cruising at 33,000ft on its way to the main British base in Afghanistan.

At its fastest, it dropped at a rate of 15,800 feet per minute with the resulting g force enough to lift passengers out of their seats, as their belongings and other items were hurled across the cabin.

“A large number of passengers and crew had been thrown towards the ceiling,” the report states.

“A significant volume of loose articles, including bags, personal effects, teapots, paper cups and bins were flying around the cabin while some passengers were shouting.”

Builders have uncovered a huge unexploded German World War Two bomb in London, prompting the evacuation of two schools and hundreds of homes. The 455kg bomb, which is 1.5m long, lay undisturbed below a pensioners’ centre for seven decades in the riverside southwest borough of Southwark. The bomb was buried two to three metres underground and still had its tail fin intact. “It’s a World War Two-era German bomb,” the Ministry of Defence said, adding that bomb disposal experts were expected to continue working into the following day to make the area safe again.

Assange wants files WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will agree to be questioned by Swedish prosecutors in London over rape allegations, but only if he is given access to the investigation files. “We need to be provided access to the entirety of the proceedings, which for four and half years has been in the hands of the Swedish prosecution and not in the hands of the defence,” said Baltasar Garzon, a former Spanish judge who is the Australian’s lawyer. Government seeks judicial review The Government is seeking a judicial review into the failure of New Zealand’s professional engineering body to complete an investigation into the civil engineer responsible for the doomed CTV building.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith yesterday announced the application for a review into the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) May 2014 decision to drop its investigation into engineer Alan Reay had been lodged in the High Court.

Dr Reay’s company designed the CTV building which col-

lapsed during the February 22, 2011 earthquake, killing 115 people.

IPENZ said it had dropped its investigation into Dr Reay because he resigned from the organisation and it did not have jurisdiction to investigate a former member.

Dr Smith believed the decision had been flawed.

“We want the decision overturned and IPENZ to complete the investigation into the professional conduct of Dr Reay’s role in the design of the CTV building,” he said.

He had been scheduled for two IPENZ disciplinary hearings later that month.

Yesterday’s High Court application sought to set aside the decision by IPENZ to dismiss the original complaint made in 2012 which sparked the organisation’s investigation into Dr Reay.

It was separate to another complaint, currently being heard by IPENZ, that Dr Reay had failed to disclose his involve-

ment in the CTV building when he tried to renew his registration as chartered professional engineer in 2012.

“It is important that we clarify the law as to whether a professional can avoid disciplinary proceedings by simply resigning,” Dr Smith said.

“Completing the IPENZ investigation will also be important in clarifying the professional standards expected of a senior engineer supervising the work of a more junior engineer,” he said.

Mighty River to shut down power station at end of year

BY GRANT BRADLEY Mighty River Power will shut down its gas-fired Southdown power station in Auckland at the year’s end and sell the plant on the international market.

The company said the 140MW Southdown station had played a very small role in MRP’s portfolio in the past two years, representing just 5 per cent of its generation and meeting less than 1 per cent of New Zealand’s total electricity demand.

The closure means the company will generate from its renewable hydro stations in the Waikato and geothermal plants around Taupo.

Gas generation is costly compared with renewable electricity plants.

Chief executive Fraser Whineray said the Southdown station was to close on December 31 and would then be dismantled for sale overseas.

The company has been working closely with Southdown’s 17 staff to explore opportunities with them.

Genesis has taken part of its coal and gas-fired Huntly plant out of operation and Contact Energy is also reviewing its gas stations’ future.

ment in renewable electricity generation in New Zealand over the past decade had “squeezed out large volumes of gas- and coal-fired generation out of New Zealand’s electricity mix, because they’re less economic to run”.

In total there had been a reduction of more than 4000GWh of thermal fuel commitments since 2013, representing more than 10 per cent of the total generation in New Zealand.

Mighty River owns the land and would decide on its future after the station had been sold.

The Southdown station (excluding land) had a historic cost book value of about $50 million and Mighty River will confirm any accounting impacts in its normal financial reporting process. It would not release any

further financial details yesterday.

The company had gas contracts locked in to the end of the year.

Mighty River Power said it had invested more than $1.4 billion in base-load geothermal, including the completion of three major geothermal power plants since 2008.

Geothermal now makes up over 40 per cent of the firm’s portfolio.

Whineray said MRP had been able to cope with prolonged periods of very dry conditions over the past two financial years, when hydro inflows have been at record low levels, by having complementary renewable fuels to draw from and the improved availability of electricity in the wholesale market.

So many ways to cook chicken

O

nce roast chicken was a treat, a meal served when families gathered for a Sunday roast.

And when it was served, the bird was generally served whole, roasted and with vegetables and gravy. And there’s nothing wrong with a traditional roast chook, but there are so many other ways to cook a chook that roasting it whole is often bypassed in favour of pieces.

Moroccan chicken 1/4 t saffron threads 2C reduced salt chicken stock 2T olive oil 1kg chicken portions 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1t ground coriander 1t ground cumin 1t paprika 1t ground ginger 1/2 t ground cinnamon 1/2 C dried apricots Fresh coriander or Italian parsley to garnish

Lemon roast chicken 2 large lemons 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2T olive oil 1kg chicken pieces 600g potatoes, scrubbed, cut into wedges 3 sprigs rosemary, leaves removed 400g steamed green beans, to serve ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Juice 1 lemon. Cut remaining lemon into wedges.

■ Combine 1/4 C lemon juice, garlic, oil, chicken, potatoes and salt and pepper in a large bowl.

■ Toss to combine. Arrange in a roasting pan.

■ Place lemon wedges over chicken and potatoes. Sprinkle with rosemary.

■ Roast for 45 minutes or until chicken is golden and lemons slightly charred.

■ Serve with steamed beans.

Thai baked chicken

1/3 C liquid honey 2T brown sugar 3-4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 T grated ginger 3T fish sauce 3T soy sauce 1t dark soy sauce 3T sherry or cooking sherry 1T lime juice Pinch cayenne 1/2 t ground white pepper ■ Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl, stirring well to dissolve the honey and sugar.

■ Place chicken pieces in a flat baking dish and pour over 2/3 of the marinade/sauce over and reserve remainder.

■ Turn chicken “face-side” down in the marinade and set in the refrigerator up to 24 hours ■ Preheat oven to 180°C.

■ Turn chicken pieces right-side up in the sauce.

■ Pour 1/2 C chicken stock in and around the chicken to blend with the marinade.

■ Cover tightly with foil. Bake 30 minutes.

■ Remove from oven and baste pieces with some of the sauce from the bottom of the baking dish. Replace foil and return to oven for another 30 minutes ■ While chicken is baking, place reserved marinade/sauce in a small sauce pan over high heat.

■ Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium-low.

■ Simmer 10 minutes.

1/2 t chilli flakes 2T fresh thyme leaves 2T lemon zest 2T extra virgin olive oil 6-8 chicken thighs, trimmed 1/2 C plain Greek yoghurt 2T lemon juice Sea salt 1T Italian parsley, chopped ■ Combine the first six ingredients in a large bowl.

■ Add the chicken thighs and toss to coat. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan bake.

■ Place the chicken in a baking dish lined with baking paper and roast uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes.

■ Season and set aside.

■ Combine yoghurt, lemon juice, sea salt and parsley. Stir well.

Place mixture in a serving bowl.

■ Arrange chicken thighs on a serv-

■ Turn off the heat and set aside for the saffron to infuse into the stock.

■ Heat the oil in a large frying pan or saucepan.

■ Add the chicken pieces in batches and cook over high heat until they are golden brown.

■ Remove from the pan and place into a large casserole dish.

■ Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes over medium heat or until golden ■ Add the coriander, cumin, paprika, ginger, and cinnamon and cook, stirring, for a further minute.

■ Add the stock with saffron and bring to the boil.

■ Place the onion and stock mixture into the casserole dish along with the dried apricots.

■ Cover and bake in the oven for 1 hour or until the chicken is tender.

■ Garnish with the coriander and serve with couscous flavoured with lemon and coriander.

Mount Hutt College’s upcoming play will present a “whole theatre experience”, says its producer Lisa Ponweiser.

The head of faculty art is working alongside head of department music Hugo Zanker as director and music tutor Wayne Pannett as musical director. About 40 students are

acting in the play, called Law and Order Nursery Rhyme Unit (NRU). It is a comedy set in nursery rhyme land, where a murder is committed and the NRU is put on the case.

Hogg picks up a medal rainbow A

shburton’s Mitch Woolf and Katelyn Hogg produced strong performances at the Division Two National Swimming Championships in Dunedin.

The Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team members combined for 11 top 10 placings with Hogg bringing home a medal rainbow.

Hogg had seven top 10 finishes and collected three medals - one of every colour.

Hogg won gold in the 200m butterfly, silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 50m butterfly and a number of new personal best times.

Woolf had four top 10 finishes, with his best effort coming in the 1500m freestyle where he was fifth, taking 11.59 seconds off his previous personal best to clock 19:01:11.

The Division I National Age Group Championships will take place from May 5-9 in Wellington.

Broncos ‘must keep Thaiday’

By Laine CLark Skipper Justin Hodges has launched a passionate plea for Brisbane to re-sign Sam Thaiday amid speculation the benched back-rower is playing for his future at the NRL club.

NSW forward Beau Scott has been linked to the Broncos after a report claiming ex-skipper Thaiday has until the end of April to show he is worthy of a contract extension.

Thaiday, 29, has been relegated to the bench by coach Wayne Bennett after showing up to pre-season training overweight and an underwhelming roundone display.

Contract talks have reportedly been put on hold until the end of next month so the Broncos can gauge Thaiday’s form.

Brisbane great Gorden Tallis added to the intrigue surrounding 12-year Broncos veteran Thaiday, saying he wouldn’t be surprised to see Bennett favourite Scott arrive at the club next year.

But Tallis also slammed the Broncos on Triple M radio on Monday, saying it was embarrassing that they had aired Thaiday’s “dirty laundry” by leaking the news that the 200-

Hodges stood up for his besieged team-mate yesterday, saying he would pick Thaiday over Scott “every day of the week”.

Hodges did not know what to make of the Scott speculation.

“He’s a great player; he gets under everyone’s skin; he does that quite well,” he said.

“He’s a quality player you’d love to have in your side.

“But if I had a choice over him or Sam, I would pick Sam every day of the week.”

Asked how much longer he could play, Thaiday said: “Another four years, easy.

“None of this talk is coming from us. I think it is a bit of a beat up. I don’t read the paper; I stay away from watching the news - I just continue doing my job.”

When told of Tallis’ passionate defence of him, Thaiday said: “That’s what mates do they stick up for mates.”

Thaiday claimed he had not wondered how his Broncos bench role would affect his Queensland State of Origin and Test prospects.

“It (bench) is the role I have to play for the team,” he said.

“In the end, footy is what is going to get me a deal so I am not too worried about it at all.”

Meanwhile, Ben Barba will miss two NRL matches after taking the early guilty plea on two charges stemming from Cronulla’s round three NRL loss to Melbourne.

The former Dally M Medallist will be free to play again in the round six clash with Newcastle at Remondis Stadium.

Roosters prop Sam Moa is facing a one-match suspension after being cited following Monday’s 20-12 NRL win over Penrith.

Moa has been charged with making dangerous contact to the head or neck of Brent Kite and carryover points from a previous offence mean he’ll be banned for the Roosters’ match against Canberra unless he successfully contests the matter.

Blues to take tougher line

By Patrick Mckendry Jerome Kaino is back from his concussion problem and ready to lead a Blues team willing to take a physical approach against the defending champion Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday.

Kaino’s head injury, suffered in the Lions defeat at North Harbour, caused him to miss the next week’s loss to the Hurricanes in Palmerston North, but after the recent bye weekend, he and the rest of his team showed their intent with a tough training session in front of All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster yesterday morning.

The brutal nature of the Waratahs’ victory over the Brumbies at the weekend may have helped prompt some of that intent.

“We had a look at how the Waratahs fronted up and for us that’s a non-negotiable.

“We have to front up physically,” Kaino said.

“We’ve had a good rest, we’ve come off a bye, we’re feeling fresh.

some physical work in. It was a good session.”

Kaino said he was fine physically after suffering from a delayed reaction to his concussion.

He passed a test during the disappointing 13-10 loss to the Lions and returned to the pitch, only for the symptoms to appear later in the week.

“I felt fine during the game, apart from the knock.

“It was a couple of days later that I started to feel the symptoms come on.

“It’s scary when you think

about the guys who have longer lay-offs and what they go through.

“I’m feeling fine now, thank goodness.

“I have faith in my medical team to put me back out there.

“I was pretty confident myself that I could go out there and perform at the time. I have no problems with the protocols or tests they have.”

The mental state of the Blues skipper and his team is also crucial after a start to the season which has consisted of

five defeats from five matches.

“The boys have been trying hard, we’re improving every week but we just haven’t managed to get that win.

“The boys know that what we’ve been doing works if we put an 80-minute performance together.

“The key is our leaders leading ... we have a lot of young guys in our squad who in these tough times look for direction and it’s important we keep performing and setting that example, they’ll follow and the results won’t be too far away.

“I try to shut it [criticism] out, but living in Auckland it’s everywhere.

“The harsh reality is we’re in a results-based industry and we have to perform and if we don’t we’re open to that criticism.”

Lock Culum Retallick is in line to play his first match of the season as Josh Bekhuis takes another week off after a concussion against the Hurricanes.

Pocock’s on-field complaints to the referee led to NSW Waratahs forward Jacques Potgieter being fined $20,000 for using homophobic slurs during his side’s Super Rugby win over the Brumbies on Sunday. Respected rugby commentator Martin says Pocock did the right thing in speaking out but his action will split opinion in the game. “He’ll pay for it. Good numbers for ‘Tahs The Waratahs’ third win of the season was their most valuable.

Their 28-13 victory over the Brumbies on Sunday showed they’re not also-rans in 2015 and the defending champions are topping a number of attacking statistics.

They’re a dangerous side when Israel Folau is in full flight and the team lead Super Rugby in carries (123.4), metres (554.2), clean breaks (12) and defenders beaten (25.6) per game. They also throw a competition-leading 165.4 passes per contest. To illustrate how outrageous those numbers are, the Reds are at the bottom of some of those categories and they produce only 77.2 carries per game, cover 281.2 metres each week and beat a lowly 4.4 defenders.

Today marks 500 days to go before Rio de Janiero stages South America’s first ever Olympic Games, and the city is straining at the leash to be ready. In having to overhaul crumbling infrastructure, polluted waters and protests notably over the choice of a nature reserve to host the return of golf to the Games, organisers could almost be forgiven for seeing the undertaking as one mammoth discipline - a giant obstacle course. O’Sullivan back in Japan Hong Kong-based Kiwi trainer Paul O’Sullivan has no false illusions about the enormity of the task ahead of his star New Zealand-bred sprinter Aerovelocity in Sunday’s Gr.1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in Japan.

Though if anyone had reason for brazenness ahead of such a significant international assignment, it would be the champion trainer.

Not only is O’Sullivan enjoying a resurgence in the cauldron of international racing that Hong Kong has become, but he has history with Japanese racing.

O’Sullivan and his father and then training partner Dave produced the great mare Horlicks to win the Gr.1 Japan Cup in 1989, ridden by champion jockey Lance O’Sullivan to score in world record time.

Lolohea grabs fullback berth Tuimoala Lolohea moves to fullback and Matt Allwood comes into the centres for the Warriors’ 20th anniversary match against the Brisbane Broncos at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday (2.00pm kick-off).

With first-choice fullback Sam Tomkins sidelined for four to six weeks with a knee injury, the versatile Lolohea will have his second start in the position in four games this season.

The 20-year-old filled the role in round one against Newcastle when Tomkins was out with a hamstring injury and also played the final 29 minutes against the Eels at fullback last Saturday after Tomkins left the field.

Allwood will become Warrior No. 199 and the seventh player to make his debut for the club this season after Solomone Kata, Ryan Hoffman, Bodene Thompson, Sam Lisone, Albert Vete and Jonathan Wright.

The 22-year-old Allwood signed with the Warriors after making 11 NRL appearances for the Canberra Raiders last season.

So far this year he has played twice for the club’s New South Wales Cup side - at centre and fullback - as well as being the NRL team’s 18th man twice.

Ashburton District Council is looking for five new members to join the Youth Council for 2015.

The Youth Council provides an important link between Council and younger members of the community.

Their opinions are sought on a range of Council decisions, not just youth related issues.

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that for the purpose of allowing Mayfield Lions to hold the Mount Somers Bike Race the following roads will be closed to ordinary vehicular traffic (with the exception of emergency vehicles) for the period indicated hereunder.

NZ win Eden Park thriller Eight hours of cricket is always sure to produce several twists and turns but yesterday’s match featured more drama than any reality show can manufacture.

The fortunes of both the Black Caps and the Proteas swung as readily as Trent Boult with a new ball, with the two teams taking turns at experiencing ascendancy, doubt and despair.

As a result, the supporters squeezing into every stand spent more time on the edge of their seats than on their feet.

More than 40,000 packed into Eden Park as the city hosted its biggest sporting event since the Rugby World Cup final and, for much of the match, the atmosphere resem-

bled that tense night in 2011.

Perhaps the stakes were to blame, with the Black Caps chasing a spot in their first global final, or it could have been a combination of the variable weather and the weekday afternoon start.

Whatever the reason, the crowd spent large parts of South Africa’s innings in a subdued state.

The Proteas’ cleverly-constructed innings would have also done some of the damage and, with the enemy well-placed when the long-threatened rain finally came, the opening of the heavens was almost a blessing.

“It’s an awesome crowd,” said former New Zealand all-rounder Dion Nash. “But I think we’re

just a little bit apprehensive at this point as to whether we should have had another wicket or two.”

That apprehension disappeared, however, over the course of the delay. While the break itself was far from significant, with the concourses packed to capacity but the assembled masses all on best behaviour, the 14 overs lost to rain somehow enhanced rather than dampened spirits.

Almost two hours after the players left the field, a rainbow appeared over the East Stand and the fans found their feet as the Black Caps continued to chase their pot of gold.

The first big cheer arrived

when the covers were removed and soon the bowlers’ run-ups were being clapped in unison on every ball.

But that noise was nothing compared to what was to follow after the change of innings, when Brendon McCullum began dispatching the South African attack to all corners of the ground.

Boundaries created a cacophony of noise and sixes were treated as life-changing moments, leaving McCullum to ride the wave of noise to his half-century.

The ‘BREN-DON’ chants were in full effect as early as the fifth over - from which McCullum took 25 runs - but the

skipper was soon gone and the nerves soon returned.
