Making an insurance claim will soon become a much less personal undertaking for many people in the Ashburton community.

Planning is under way to close Ashburton’s AMI store and to move the company’s business to digital and call centres and that will see 53 bricks and mortar stores close across New Zealand.

The closure announcement came as a shock to long serving AMI employee Veronica Rabbitt.

She notched up 42 years with the company, 27 of those in Ashburton. She retired as branch manager five years ago.

Closing the Ashburton store would be a blow for older people, many of whom enjoyed calling in to pay a bill and stop for a chat, she said.

“When I was there it was busy with a lot of foot traffic and it will be missed in Ashburton where people like to talk face-to-face.

This has come as quite a shock,” Rabbitt said.

In the Ashburton office a large number of claims related to weather damage and people appreciated the opportunity to talk face-to-face with insurance staff, she said.

“We had a great office and a good crowd to work with, but things change and you have to accept that. They wouldn’t be doing this unless it was the right thing to do.”

The change is one that won’t be undertaken until communities and staff have had an opportunity to have a say on the closures and what the impact on their insurance needs might be, said exec-

Cycling fundraiser gains handed over The Ashburton College student executive hand over a cheque and the food donations raised through their 24-hour cycling challenge held earlier this month. For 24 hours the 15 members of the student executive, teachers and members of the public pedalled away hoping to raise funds for the local Salvation Army as a thank you for their hard work during the lockdown. The students raised more than $2500 in donations and more than six banana boxes worth of food was donated. The students said the success of the event had eclipsed any of their expectations.

Water nitrate level concerns

Calls by Forest and Bird to reinstate a proposed lower freshwater nitrogen limit to combat what it says are alarming high levels of nitrates in drinking water in the district are “nothing more than scaremongering” says Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ president David Clark.

“The World Health Organisation have set international drinking water standards at 11.3mg/l and it is of note that this level has not been exceeded anywhere in Canterbury during 2020,” Clark said.

“The DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) level of 1mg/l called for by Forest and Bird, would be an exceptionally difficult target for our community to achieve in our lowland streams at the coast given that there is groundwater entering farms directly from Department of Conservation land along the foothills with a DIN level of 3.2mg/l.”

Environment Canterbury had taken a precautionary approach in setting its targets which required groundwater nitrate levels of 6.9mg/l, which equated to a

DIN level of about 6mg/l, he said.

A 2017 ECan report found that, to achieve a similar target to 1mg/l in the Selwyn Te Waihora catchment, land use would have to revert predominately to dryland sheep farming, many farms would face bankruptcy and economic activity would drop significantly.

“Every person in this district, whether employed or owning a business therefore needs to understand what Forest and Bird are advocating for and what effect reverting land use in this district back to dryland sheep farming would have and what employment opportunities, or lack thereof, would exist if such an unachievable goal was imposed,” Clark said.

“In the meantime, farmers will continue to strive to reduce agricultural impact with positive investment in environmental improvements and implementing good management practices.”

Forest and Bird freshwater advocate Tom Kay said high readings were the result of intensive farming upstream, “and they’re a significant concern for both human and ecosystem health”.

Last year, the release of a Danish study linked nitrate-nitrogen levels as low as 0.88 mg/l with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Forest and Bird said the water supply for the Rangitata Huts reached a recent maximum of 11.43mg/l in June last year, having since dropped back to 8.85mg/l in April.

Ashburton’s Tinwald treatment plants recorded a nitrate-nitrogen level of 7.01mg/l. Numerous other supplies across the wider Ashburton district recorded similar levels, Kay said.

Government last month delayed a proposed freshwater DIN nitrogen limit of 1mg/l for another year, saying the science advice was mixed.

ECan Ashburton zone delivery lead Janine Holland said that nitrate levels in several parts of the Ashburton district were an historical issue.

ECan’s nitrate risk map identified north-east Ashburton, parts of the lower plains, Tinwald, Lowcliffe, Riverside and Ealing-Hinds, as areas which were at high risk of having nitrate concentrations which

exceeded the MAV. New Zealand drinking water standards set a Maximum Acceptable Value (MAV) of 50 milligrams per litre (mg/l) for nitrate, equivalent to 11.3mg/l nitrate-nitrogen. If nitrate-nitrogen concentrations reach half that level (5.65mg/l) in a community supply, additional monitoring must be undertaken.

The Rangitata Huts on the north side of the river had a privately-run community water supply, with that community responsible for testing its water supply, Holland said.

Tinwald was a public drinking water supply, for which the Ashburton District Council was responsible.

Councils were responsible for maintaining public water supplies, while individuals were responsible for their own private drinking water sources. In November 2019, ECan, together with the Canterbury District Health Board and Ashburton District Council, sent letters to 4000 rural addresses in Ashburton district to remind well owners how to protect their wells, and how to test for problems.

“We know in some areas older customers will just pop in for a chat or to pay their bill, but the numbers coming into stores are now quite small.”

With that in mind the company was exploring other customer service options and these could include using technology to enable customers to book a virtual face-to-face meeting.

For events, such as widespread damage from wind or hail, that often occurred in the Ashburton District, IAG would establish popup mobile stores, Mygind said.

While Covid-19 had accelerated the use of digital contact with clients it was not the reason for the proposed store closures. This was something the company had been looking at for some time, she said.

“But nothing’s yet set in concrete. It’s all about community engagement at this stage.”

People could have input into the proposed store closures by contacting AMI online or by calling in to the Ashburton store, she said.

The plan is to move the more than 350 staff, who are currently working in customer service roles, into digital or call centre teams, and that would create opportunities to work from home, Mygind said.

Sixty-five store management roles will be disestablished and IAG is working with those affected regarding future employment options.

Donation a welcome boost post lockdown Vehicle

The Ashburton Cancer Society has received a welcome boost to their funds thanks to a donation from the Methven Lions Club.

The Methven Lions Club have donated $10,000 to the Ashburton Cancer Society from funds raised through the club’s annual Mt Hutt Open Day which is held in conjunction with the Mt Hutt Skifield.

The event was held on March 1, just weeks before the country went into lockdown after being postponed from February 29 due to the weather.

Club president Gary Rackham and event co-ordinator Peter Garde said crowd numbers had been good for the event, which had experienced a boom in recent years after members of the Christchurch mountain biking scene started flocking to the event following the Canterbury earthquakes.

“A donation like this goes a long way to supporting what we do,” she said.

“A lot of what we do is helping people out with fuel vouchers and grocery vouchers and with our driving service not operating recently there has been extra demand for fuel vouchers.”

Bonifant said with Ashburton situated where it is, the reality is everyone will have travel at some point on their cancer journey for treatment.

The service, which receives no government funding, also provides many other services for people battling cancer, including helping with firewood, childcare for young families, power bills and counselling.

They also host a group lunch once a month.

Police appeal for in-car assault witnesses

Police are appealing to witnesses of an incident in downtown Ashburton last week where a man forcibly entered a woman’s vehicle and assaulted her.

In a media release yesterday, detective Craig Clare of the Ashburton CIB said police were investigating an incident in Ashburton township on June 18 and are looking for assistance from members of the public.

At about 3.30pm a woman was parked directly outside the post office on East Street when a man she did not know got into her vehicle.

The man demanded a ride to Allenton before assaulting her.

The woman was able to force the man out of the vehicle.

While the incident left her shaken, she was not physically hurt.

Immediately prior to the incident, the woman had noticed the man speaking with the occupants of a vehicle parked directly behind her.

“We would now like to speak to the occupants of that vehicle, anyone who may have witnessed this incident or anyone who recognised the man in the area at that time,” Clare said.

He is described as Maori, in his

20s and of a solid build and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.

The hood was pulled up over his head at the time.

Local police say they are taking a string of vehicle break-ins in Methven very seriously and have bought in expert forensics technicians to assist with their enquiries.

Ashburton sub area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins confirmed on Tuesday morning that at that time they had received reports of two vehicles being broken into, and were awaiting reports to be made on the incidents, and those reports would determine the extent of the issue.

A number of posts on the Methven Noticeboard Facebook page had been posted by people who had had their vehicles broken into, with one man reporting a large quantity of expensive hunting gear being stolen.

One post also said that the local police phone line message said that Methven’s two police constables were on days’ off, but Jenkins confirmed this was not the case, and said that, if there was ever a situation where there is no Methven staff working, any offending would be covered by Ashburton staff.

Jenkins said the process of following up these enquiries began on Tuesday, with an expert fingerprint technician arriving in the town yesterday to carry out testing, with formal statements and enquiries following after that.

“The Mid South Canterbury Police Focus at present is burglary and volume crime, so this offending is treated very seriously,” he said.

“I oversee all burglary complaints at present with a stated direction that all burglary scenes are visited within 48 hours.”

Jenkins warned that thieves search vehicles for cash, credit cards, sunglasses, satellite navigation systems, mobile phones, computers, tools – anything of value that is left in vehicles.

Once upon a time library fun

Once upon a time in the Ashburton Library a children’s librarian called Jonathan Nixon set in motion a July school holiday programme for five to twelve-yearolds.

The magic begins on July 6 with a fairy-tale puppet theatre and finishes with a Mad Hatter’s tea party flourish on July 17.

Nixon said the library had planned to run a holiday programme in the last school holidays, but the dastardly Covid-19 virus swept in and carried all his plans off to a distant land.

After a staff brainstorming session Nixon said the ‘once upon a time’ theme was settled on.

“It is an exciting theme as there are all levels of storytelling styles within it.”

Fairy-tales may be set in a time when dashing princes on white horses saved princesses from dark and spooky towers, but this holiday programme has its feet set firmly in the twenty-first century.

With a wave of Nixon’s wand and some help from a green screen and the odd app or two, children will be able to transport themselves into their own fairytale world, bring their favourite

“Graphic novels or magazines are all reading material. The language in graphic novels is fantastic, they are all about dialogue and how to converse with each other.”

Pattons Road A suggestion made at Monday’s Ashburton District Council’s speed limit review hearings that the entrance to Pattons Road in Mt Somers should be closed was made by mayor Neil Brown, not Mt Somers Citizens Association member Sarah Stanaway. She spoke on the community’s desire to reduce speed limits in the village to 50km/h and also asked that the speed limit on the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road be reduced to 70km/h at Mt Somers. Brown suggested the closure of Pattons Road would reduce access options to the village and could be a good safety improvement.

Community feeling and commonsense were the two guiding principles when decisions were made on a raft of speed limit changes on Ashburton District roads, says councillor Stuart Wilson.

The Infrastructure Services Committee chairman led a team of councillors this week who listened to people from around the district make their case in support or opposition of the large number of speed limit changes the council proposed.

More than 250 submissions were made on changes pro-

posed in the council’s speed limit review with more than a dozen people taking the opportunity to put their case to councillors at a submissions hearing on Monday.

Decisions had been made on all proposed changes and while those decisions wouldn’t be made public until after the next infrastructure services committee meeting, Wilson hinted the changes would be well supported by the community because the opinions of submitters had been listened to by councillors.

“We worked through everything and we’ve made our decisions. We disagreed on some, worked with the manage-

ment team on others. We took notice of the submissions and while we won’t please everyone, we’ve tried to be logical in those decisions,” he said.

Wilson hinted that the outcome in many cases would be lowered speed limits because decisions had erred on the conservative side, although, in the odd case, there had been increases made.

A key factor in deliberations had been changes the NZ Transport Agency had made to the speed limit options available.

Choices are now 100, 80, 60, 50 or 30km/h.

Limits of 90 or 70km/h are off

the table. However, areas where 70km/h limits are already in place, such as Hinds and Rakaia, will not change.

One of the hottest topics at the submissions hearing was a plea for all schools to have a speed limit of 40km/h outside their boundaries. While giving nothing away, Wilson said the decision made on this was “pretty logical for both rural and urban schools”.

This speed limit review is the most wide reaching the council has undertaken for several years but the changes were ones that the community should largely be happy with, he said.

The Ministry of Health has finally revealed how many of the 55 people who left managed isolation early on compassionate leave were not tested for Covid. The answer was 51. Of the 55, 39 have now tested negative, seven won’t be tested for medical reasons or because they are children and one was wrongly counted because their leave application was withdrawn.

Of the remaining eight, four are awaiting test results and four still haven’t been tested.

Cash rate The Reserve Bank has kept its official cash rate on hold at 0.25 per cent, in line with market expectations. The central bank, in an emergency response to the Covid-19 pandemic, cut its rate by three quarters of a percentage point to 0.25 per cent on March 16 its lowest ever level.

Hospice manager Debbie’s dream job

If she had to describe her perfect job, general manger of Hospice Mid Canterbury would have to be it, Debbie Mackle says.

She’s just a few days into her new role, taking over from the organisation’s Mid Canterbury founder, Jane Wright, and said she’s exactly where she wants to be in life, facing new challenges and working to make life better for others.

The hospice philosophy sold Mackle on the job from the moment she saw it advertised.

“I had previous experience with hospice through family and a very dear friend. It’s an amazing organisation. It’s now my job to build on the fantastic work that’s already been done. It’s fabulous what this team is doing,” she said.

Mackle comes to the job after 20 years in dairying. She’s now doing double duty as a regional hub manager for VetLife and hospice manager. The option of retirement didn’t sit comfortably with her.

“When we sold our cows and bought our lifestyle block, I thought, great, I’m retired, but after a couple of weeks I was wondering what I was going to do with my time.”

She’s an ex-dairy farmer, now living on a lifestyle block on Ash-

burton’s outskirts and said she’s always had a keen interest in natural therapies, using these on her children and on her dairy cows.

That meant happy cows and happy kids, she said.

Some of those cows came to town with Mackle and her family and were joined by cats, dogs, ducks, chickens and horses on the lifestyle property “I loved everything about dairy farming and everything it did for our family but it was time for a change. Now If I need a cuddle I just go out and hug my old girls.”

For Mackle, the next few weeks will be spent gaining an understanding of the services the organisation offers and learning from volunteers. And it’s those volunteers who are at the heart of hospice, she said.

“They’re all so willing to give their time and they have so many different skill sets.”

Winning the hospice manager’s job brought an opportunity for work that was close to her heart, Mackle said.

“This is a dream job bringing all of this together and working with like-minded people. When people with like minds get together with all their skill sets, what they can achieve is amazing. this is so much more than a service.

Spca snip’n’chip service back again

Staff at the SPCA’s Ashburton Centre are expecting a big demand for their snip’n’chip service when vouchers go on sale next week.

The service, which the organisation has been running for around three years now allows people to access heavily subsidised de-sexing and microchipping of cats and dogs.

“We have de-sexed and microchipped around 300 animals since we started doing this a couple of years ago,” centre manager Rebecca Dobson said.

“It is something we will continue to do as it is very popular.”

Dobson said there are limited spaces available for dogs, with more available for cats, with a big demand expected once again.

The programme, which is subsidised by the SPCA and supported by a number of local vets means it costs only $30 to get a dog de-sexed and microchipped, or $20 for a cat.

“We like to do it at this time of year to prevent unwanted litters in the next kitten season,” she said.

“It is also a bit of a quieter time for the vets as they do tend to be busier in the summer months.”

The SPCA will be running their snip’n’chip campaign again, from the end of the month, in an effort to help lower the number of unwanted cats and dogs in the community.

“It shows it really does work and if we can keep doing it consistently it will help to reduce

unwanted litters,” she said.

They are also launching the programme in Timaru, and Dobson said they will be doing a big promotion campaign which

has been receiving positive feedback already.

snip’n’chip voucher and secure a spot.

The centre’s opening hours are from 10am to 1pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Lifting the arable sector profile Federated Farmers Arable Industry Group’s new chair, South Canterbury farmer Colin Hurst, is keen to lift the profile of the arable sector among consumers and fellow farmers.

Hurst, the 2019 Arable Farmer of the Year, replaces Karen Williams, who is now Federated Farmers’ vice-president.

As well as following his interest in science and innovation driving improved production and a lighter environmental footprint, Hurst wanted to highlight the sector’s importance to consumers and the economy. Sales of arable production and spending generated by the industry contributed $863 million to GDP in 2018.

“Most people know we produce cereal grains used in bread and a host of other staples, and all the malting barley needed by our brewers, but we also grow the pasture seeds essential to our livestock farmers, not to mention brassicas and other feed crops, and seed production for domestic and international markets,” Hurst said.

The arable industry’s export receipts were forecast to hit $260 million in the financial year just ended, a 10.2 per cent increase.

In her last annual report, Williams said it had been an enormous disappointment to many arable farmers that demand for arable feed had not increased in parallel with the feed demands of livestock farmers suffering under drought conditions.

Despite “brilliant rain” over the past week many farmers were still running short of stock feed, Federated Farmers Hawke’s Bay president Jim Galloway said.

“Most farmers are well down on the stock they would normally carry. They are very short of feed and every day they’re looking at what they have to do or what they can do to get through.”

“It’s just been a slog,” Galloway said.

As well as serving Federated Farmers at national, regional and branch level, Hurst has put in countless hours for the South Canterbury Rural Support Trust, the Arable Industry Group’s Herbage Seedgrowers Subsection, United Wheatgrowers and the Foundation for Arable Research.

He has been an advocate for farmers around the Seed Quality Management Authority table, on the Fertiliser Quality Council driving the development of a physical standard for fertiliser, and at local authority planning and hearing processes.

The region will have 30 per cent fewer lambs this season because farmers have had to sell off stock, he said.

That will not only affect farmers but meat works and potentially the whole community.

“Everyone’s been working really hard since February. Most farmers have been feeding out every day. It’s just been a slog and your head down.

“You’re looking at your stock and what you can do to feed them better tomorrow or the next day or next month.

“It does take a mental toll as much as a physical toll.”

There has been good access to feed from the South Island and other parts of the North Island. Getting out of lockdown and having saleyards operating again has been a big help to farmers, he said.

“The prices have been pretty shocking but at least they’ve been able to move them and they know it’s a market price.”

Galloway said the slightly warmer than average weather has kept up soil temperatures, which would help grass growth.

OUR VIEW

Police riots I am writing in relation to the article in the Guardian on Saturday, June 6 in which I was quoted about the Springbok tour verse the riots in the USA. I was disappointed to see the interview has been taken totally out of context and turned into a comment about prejudice in the NZ Police.

While I said that prejudice did exist in the NZ Police I also said that the police are very professional and deal with everyone equally. The police have addressed equality issues over the years and now would lead most organisations and individuals in New Zealand with their treatment of all citizens.

The police do not act on the colour of skin when they deal with crime, they are concerned with catching people who break the law and hurt victims.

If the offenders of such crime are a disproportionate part of the overall population this is not a matter for the police, it is a matter for the wider community. Police deal with law created by Government. Criminals are punished by justice, not police.

I was disappointed to see the tone of this article was about me commenting on the state of the prejudice that may or may not exist in the NZ Police when I am no longer in a position to comment.

I believe that the NZ Police are very professional in how they treat all citizens. Any statistics that are skewed towards minority groups are a sociatle question to be addressed, not just the police.

Contactless business equals empty shops

A

nd so, we’re about to lose yet another shop front in Ashburton.

AMI is slated for closure, well not exactly closure, but it’s set to go off the physical radar and into cyberspace.

Its owner IAG has decided there’s insufficient foot traffic coming in to any of its stores around New Zealand and it’s opting to take its business into the digital world and the tangled web of call centres.

And we all know how call centres work – canned music, canned message, canned music ... until you run out of patience and decide whatever you were calling about wasn’t that important anyway and disconnect.

But, when it comes to insurance, yes we can pay our bill online (most of us probably do that anyway) but making a claim, doing that online or through a call centre doesn’t really cut it.

And if you’re old and a technophobe, how’s that going to work?

Yes, you can understand a corporate wanting to ditch the costs that come with bricks and mortar businesses – rent, power, etc, but at what cost to customers?

Imagine the call centre nightmare, hours on hold and when you finally get a human voice you might not both be speaking the same version of English.

When we have one of our regular weather events and your claim is urgent, how will that work with the call centre model? At a guess, hours of canned music madness and a claim that may simply be too much trouble.

It’s clearly something AMI, and probably other insurance company, customers will just have to suck up.

Disappointing as the AMI story is for Ashburton, it won’t be the last company to opt for cheaper, contactless ways of doing business. That not only means changes for customers or clients, it also means, sadly, the number of empty shop fronts in our town centre will grow.

As the virulence rampages, seemingly unchecked, across countries large and small, until very recently we seemed to have the key to its resistance.

Weeks without cases, designated hospital beds empty, official danger levels sinking, complete freedom gathering momentum. Social distancing fading into history.

But suddenly ... the viper awakes from its slumbers, raises its angry head once more, hisses furiously at us and begins to make up for lost time. The hitherto impenetrable “ring of steel” by which we had been protected and surrounded – led by Warriors Jacinda and Ashley – breached, incoming visitors and returning-homers somehow allowed in without being properly tested; one or two even self-divert-

ed from the straight and narrow to attend, illegally, weddings and funerals, and before you could say “Ashley Bloomfield” cases of the deadly disease start to appear, after weeks of welcome “zero” returns.

Had Mistress Complacency inveigled us, in that beguilingly seductive way she has, into believing the battle had been won?

Was now really the time to eat, drink and be as merry as we liked after the bravely-borne privations of lockdown?

This had to be our reward for our stoicism in the face of lockdown fatigue. Well, yes but,

mostly, no.

Understandably, the long Covid-free period had lulled some into that dreaded complacency, which can strike, with devastating consequence, at a moment’s notice.

Incomers mixed with those already well into quarantine; the same building, with unavoidably joint facilities, shared by recent arrivals from every nation and all genders.

Something was likely to give and, spurred on by the National Party outriders and media people of every stripe, it soon became a cause celebre, the stuff of media feed wherever it is found.

However, order seems now to have been restored and lessons learned. Don’t take the coronavirus for granted, would be the most significant.

After all, elsewhere the pandemic continues to wreak proverbial havoc, with the deranged Trump having now presided over the unwanted deaths of one hun-

You ”mark my words”, the National Party will soon – if they are not already – be asking themselves why on earth they did not choose the uniquely qualified Nikki Kaye to be their leader rather than the stodgy Todd.

QUICK RECIPE

NZ pork marsala with mushrooms and shallots 4-6 NZ pork chops, boneless 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, chopped 300g mushrooms, sliced 1/2 C Marsala or sweet white wine 1/2 C chicken stock 2T olive oil 2T butter 1/3 C flour 1t garlic powder 1/2 t salt and pepper Fresh thyme 1t Dijon mustard ■■ On a plate or shallow bowl, combine flour, garlic powder and salt and pepper. Toss the pork through the mixture, coating all sides. Tap off any excess.

■■ In a fry pan over medium-high heat, add the butter and oil.

Once the butter has melted, add the pork.

■■ Cook each side of the pork until golden brown then lower the

heat and add the mushrooms, shallots and garlic – tossing with tongs to cook evenly.

■■ Add the Marsala wine and chicken stock, scraping up any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan.

■■ Add in a few sprigs of fresh thyme and cover with a lid. Cook

for about 7-8 minutes on low.

■■ Add Dijon mustard and cook uncovered for a further 3-4 minutes, or until the sauce is thick like gravy.

Phoenix players re-group

Mt Somers kept the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup in their clubrooms with a win in the opening round of the Senior B competition at the weekend.

Senior Bs up and running Mt Somers first defence of the newly minted Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup proved to be a successful one as they saw off the challenge of Celtic during the opening round of the Mid Canterbury Senior B rugby competition.

Playing at home in front of their faithful crowd, the Mt Somers lads produced a gritty performance to claim the victory, eventually walking away win-

ners with a 13-5 scoreline.

The trophy, which was last week announced as being a Challenge Trophy played for each week instead of its usual spot for a one-off game at the end of the season, will also take pride of place in the Mt Somers clubrooms for an extra week at least with the bye falling their way for round two this weekend.

Rakaia, who missed out on a game last week with the bye,

and were a late inclusion into the draw after appearing as though they wouldn’t be able to field a team, will kickstart their campaign this weekend with a tough match at home against Collegiate who put together an impressive performance last week.

Playing against Southern at home, the Collegiate side won 35-26 in a high scoring thriller.

Southern will turn around this

week and look to change their fortunes when they take on Allenton who were on the wrong side of a strong Methven effort last weekend.

Methven produced the performance of the round in their 38-17 victory over the Allenton side and will head into their clash this week with Celtic with their tails up as they look to lay an early claim on the competition.

Silver Fern captain backs scoring change Star Silver Ferns’ shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio says the move to a two-goal ‘Super Shot’ in the Australian netball league is exciting.

When the Suncorp Super Netball season starts in August, a two-goal shot will be introduced for the last five minutes of each quarter.

The change, announced on Tuesday by the boss of the Australian competition, gives shooters the chance to score two goals with one shot from a 1.9 metre designated zone in the goal circle.

It’s drawn a lot of criticism from the netball fraternity across the Tasman, with players saying they weren’t consulted.

Fans have expressed their shock that the league would impose the change despite the overwhelming opposition to the move.

“Players not being consulted over the biggest rule change net-

ball has seen is terrible,” former Australian and Melbourne Vixens shooter Caitlin Thwaites posted on Twitter.

Ekenasio, who’s arguably the best goal attack in the world right now, said she understood why it was so controversial.

“I heard that the players and the clubs were not consulted in the decision in the end so that throws enough as it is but ultimately I actually find it quite exciting,” Ekenasio said.

“I think it takes away from the fact that they’ve [the Australian league] just got a lot of really really tall shooters, which is hard to combat sometimes.

“I know a lot of people aren’t very happy about it but for me I think that if we continue to keep evolving our game then that’s a good place to be. I think it’s a step in the right direction. Who knows how it will actually turn out in the end. I guess everyone will just have to get to the post and start

practising some long shots.”

Ekenasio, who was born in and grew up playing netball in Australia, said only being told five weeks out from the start of their competition was surprising.

“It’s actually quite a short time ... it’s definitely going to change the last five minutes of every single quarter.

“I’d probably be a bit nervous, I know the defenders are definitely more anxious about it I guess because it completely changes what they’ve got to do within a quarter.

But ultimately I’d be quite excited I think as a shooter, so it just opens up a huge amount of possibility.”

She said given how much had gone on this year it was a lot to take in for the Australian players.

“It’s potentially just another blow for some people but if everything hadn’t have happened the way it did this year it could have been a really cool aspect to look to, we’ll just see how

it plays out.”

Ekenasio has excelled at Fast Five in the past.

She said she loved playing the official modified version of netball, which is played sporadically at tournaments.

She said it was clear Super Netball organisers in Australia wanted to push on with change.

“They’ve got their rolling subs already, and they’ve got tactical time-outs I think that they’re advancing, they are definitely advancing regardless or not of how the public see it, whether they enjoy it or not.

“I think they’re very commercially driven ... the fact that players and clubs were not consulted just begs the question, they’re changing regardless.

“It’s definitely making changes, and kind of making waves in the netball scene, which potentially we haven’t seen netball change for a long long long time so I think it’s cool.”

Boys will be boys. But that has been difficult for the Wellington Phoenix players over the last three months as the A-League went into hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the boys are back and the banter is flying.

The Phoenix returned to Australia last weekend to go into quarantine with their first game in the resumption scheduled for July 17 against Sydney FC. Midfielder Cameron Devlin stayed with his family in Sydney during lockdown and says it was a great feeling to get back together again after so long apart.

Devlin says that’s the thing that they’ve missed the most.

“We’ve gone three months without each other so there’s plenty of banter flying, especially the English boys who think they’re comedians,” Devlin said.

“The boys have a lot to catch up on and so honestly I’m loving being back with them, on the pitch and in the gym it’s hard work but as soon as we get off everyone’s having a good time and enjoying each other’s company again.”

However there’s not a lot they can do.

“We’re in a designated area with a football pitch, a gym and a pool ... we’ve got a couple of rooms with table tennis and a pool table, so there’s a bit of competition there and plenty of the boys have their PlayStations so FIFA is getting a bit of a hammering.”

Devlin says all the players have come back in good shape. He had no problems working out in lockdown with his family in Sydney.

“My dad is a personal trainer so there was a gym set-up at home and we were also able to go to the park occasionally to work on my fitness.”

“To be honest my dad had high expectations for me, probably higher than they should have been, but it was good.”

“My little brother also got involved, but generally it was up to me and it worked out well.”

Twenty-two-year-old Devlin says he looked forward to the Zoom catch-ups with the rest of the team and they’re still doing it for two of their team-mates who remain in self-isolation.

Forward Gary Hooper returned from England and midfielder Ulises Davila from Mexico and both are in a separate hotel and are confined to their rooms for two weeks before they can join up with their team-mates.

The lockdown ended an impressive run of form for the Phoenix, who had won their last four games and were third on the table.

Devlin admits he did have some doubts about the League returning.

“It was pretty scary and sad at the same time, we were doing so well and the whole squad was believing that we could do something special and our results were showing that.”

Not another rebuild to navigate

B

ack to square one we go.

Another coach gone, another rebuild to navigate through.

It’s a well worn narrative for the Warriors, however the axing of head coach Stephen Kearney felt strangely peculiar and awfully abrupt compared to previous coaching downfalls at the Penrose club.

The reports began to materalise less than 24 hours after the side were overturned by South Sydney 40-12 that Kearney was bounced from his post.

There are several factors pervading an overarching reaction of sympathy from the public and pundits.

One was the timing of Kearney’s dismissal, a mere four rounds since the NRL’s post-Covid resumption where the Warriors record read 2-2 – although it is probably best described as a football team resembling Dr Jekyll and Mr Hogwash.

Another significant point is the Covid-related sacrifices the club has made, Kearney included, to move basecamp across the ditch indefinitely to keep the rebooted competition going. Clearly this element was barely a consideration for Warriors owners and in likelihood Kearney’s fate was probably sealed when Autex secured outright control of the club last September, just over six months after Kearney signed a contract extension through until the end of 2022.

Kearney is set for a payout from the club of of about $1.6 million for his troubles.

gospel or pretense is irrelevant.

So where does that leave the Warriors?

As messy and savage as the manner of which the matter was handled, the Warriors were not making the playoffs in 2020, with or without Kearney.

They’ve already endured a dreadful hand with injuries and their thin roster is lacking match-winners in most of the key positions.

The players are probably in a fairly precarious space with another assistant coach forced to take the wheel.

There have been numerous candidates bandied around, none of which instill any confidence.

Former Manly coach Geoff Toovey wasted no time in publicly lobbying for the gig.

Although he led the Sea Eagles to the Grand Final in 2013, his results were largely underwhelming during his four-year tenure and he has been without a coaching role of note ever since.

The early mail is that former Newcastle coach Nathan Brown who was brought on as a consultant with the Warriors is a frontrunner.

‘Noose’ in Nascar driver’s garage was door opener – FBI The noose found in Nascar driver Bubba Wallace’s garage was actually a handle on a garage door and had been there since last year, an FBI investigation has concluded.

Wallace, the sole full-time black driver in Nascar, successfully pushed to ban the Confederate flag from races.

Nascar said it was “thankful to learn that this was not an intentional, racist act against Bubba”.

Wallace, 26, had received messages of solidarity from fellow Nascar drivers and sports stars around the world after the discovery at the Geico 500 at Talladega, Alabama, with Nascar chief Steve Phelps vowing to “use every effort to find who has done this”.

In a joint statement, US attorney Jay E Town and FBI special agent in charge Johnnie Sharp Jr said: “The FBI learned that garage number 4, where the noose

was found, was assigned to Bubba Wallace last week.

“The investigation also revealed evidence, including authentic video confirmed by Nascar, that the noose found in garage number 4 was in that garage as early as October 2019.

“Although the noose is now known to have been in garage number 4 in 2019, nobody could have known Mr Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week.”

Wood Brothers Racing were the last team to occupy the garage and they released a statement saying an employee had remembered seeing a “tied handle” on the garage door last October.

Earlier in June, Nascar banned the Confederate flag from all races. It came amid global protests against the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.

any credentials apart from meek success at the Dragons and then Newcastle to suggest he would change anything.

Wayne Bennett is also linked to both the Warriors and the Bulldogs despite being locked into a deal with the Rabbitohs until the end of next season.

However, Bennett shut down any talk of this possibility yesterday.

The only candidate that I believe is capable of overhauling

the standards at the Warriors is someone who they have previously made a play for, Craig Bellamy.

It would of course mean the Warriors splashing some serious bank for someone of that calibredemeanour.But he would be worth every penny.

He too also has another year on his contract at Melbourne in which he has indicated that he is unlikely to resign with the club of which he has been involved with

for nearly 20 years.

The most successful NRL coach of the modern era, if you’ve seen Bellamy’s postmatch press conferences and his demeanour in the coaching box, plus have a glance at his record with the Storm, he is a manager who clearly demands very high standards of his players.

I would like to think he would be given license to consult on some of the operational elements of the organisation.

Whether he is up for the challenge, or still has the drive at NRL level following years of success and occasional turbulence at the Storm – maybe he saw enough when Eric Watson and co last attempted to entice him across the ditch.

With the lack of success the Warriors have enjoyed over 25 years and another coaching windup, raises the same old fundamental questions which go beyond who the coach is.

The issues with the Warriors and New Zealand Rugby League in general are more intricate than the casual punters give it credit for.

Coaching is only a part of the equation and the biggest hurdles exist around New Zealand rugby league pathways and the lack of incentive to play in New Zealand compared to playing in Australia, alongside the saturation of union within schools.

These are problems which have no easy fix.

Kearney’s exit certainly is not the fix-all remedy.

Either way, the owners certainly have some thinking to do and some calls to make.

World Cup win could transform game in Oceania New Zealand’s joint bid to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup with Australia could be a template for cross FIFA confederation co-operation and could transform the game in Oceania.

NZF Chief Executive Andrew Pragnell said the timing was right to launch a bid to host the World Cup, which has been expanded to 32 teams from 24 after the 2019 tournament in France drew massive television audiences and commercial interest.

The joint bid received the highest rating in a FIFA evaluation report earlier this month and was given another boost on Monday when Japan withdrew from contention, leaving Colombia as the only rival bidder.

“If you follow the growth of the event, it’s only going one way,” Pragnell said ahead of Thursday’s vote.

“It is growing exponentially.

“Certainly for New Zealand the timing was right ... to partner with Australia. It was for them also.”

Pragnell added that the bid process had strengthened the relationship between the close neighbours, who play in different FIFA confederations – New Zealand in Oceania and Australia in the Asia zone.

“We are a perfect example of where Asia and Oceania as two separate confederations should be working hand-inhand on so many issues,” he said, adding that one of FIFA’s key goals was closer co-operation across confederations.

“When you look across the Asian federation, they really are a diverse and eclectic mix of nations, both small and big.

Both countries have said a successful bid for the tournament would be a catalyst for the growth of the women’s game.

NZF have 35,000 female players out of a total player pool of some 150,000 and Pragnell said they were targeting a 50-50 split by the end of 2027.

The legacy of hosting the tournament would also filter through to the smaller nations within Oceania, said Pragnell, with NZF planning programmes to increase the number of women coaches, officials and administrators throughout the region.

“There is a massive opportunity here ... for all of the 10 other Oceania members, to be able to fully participate in the event,” he said.

“It has got the potential to be ... transformative.”

Strong start for seniors

Goalie Caitlin Muir produced an impressive effort in Women’s Division Two hockey on the weekend recording a clean sheet as her Tinwald side notched up a 5-0 victory.

Mid Canterbury has sides playing in both the Division One men’s and women’s competitions as well as two sides in the wom-

en’s division two competition and two teams competing in the Division Three boys’ grade.

At the weekend five of those teams began their seasons and registered strong victories – announcing themselves as teams to watch throughout the season.

In the Division One men’s action, Wakanui took a long trip to

Oamaru to play Tainui but their effort in the travel department was rewarded with a strong 5-3 victory to mark themselves as a team to beat this season.

In women’s action, the Wakanui side headed to Timaru to take on Geraldine.

They managed to put the ball behind the goal keeper and into

the goal on five occasions while only conceding two goals down the other end to also pick up a strong victory.

In the Division Two women’s matches, Tinwald produced perhaps the best performance of the weekend downing Temuka with a comprehensive 5-0 scoreline while Wakanui had a slight-

Early next week both the Wakanui and Allenton sides who are set to compete in the Division Three boys’ grade will be in action in Timaru for grading matches for their grade which will kick off the following week.
